BE MORE CARING IN 2018

Fiona Hamilton (centre), Family Support Coordinator at Home-Start Glasgow North is looking for new volunteers to help support their familites.

A Scottish carers’ organisation is asking people to start the New Year with good intentions to help local families experiencing difficulties. Home-Start Glasgow North is keen to find new volunteers, who can sign up to a special training course that starts this month, or join a course later in the year. The charity was set up 40 years ago to increase the confidence and independence of families with at least one child under the age of five. Fiona Hamilton, a Home Start Family Support Coordinator, said: “We are looking for volunteers who would like to support our families. The training course usually takes place one day per week for six weeks.

“After training, volunteers are matched with a family and they spend around two to three hours each week with them. Volunteers from Bearsden and Milngavie can support families in Drumchapel and Maryhill, as well as other areas across north Glasgow, so families are usually just a short bus ride or car journey away.” In fact, three of the current members of staff live in Bearsden or Milngavie and all first started with Home Start as volunteers. The families they support can be experiencing post-natal depression

or other mental illnesses, physical illness or disability, bereavement, relationship break-up, loneliness or a range of other issues, all of which make parenting challenging. Volunteers provide a range of support, depending on the needs of each family by visiting families in their homes to provide friendship, practical assistance and emotional support. Fiona said: “Other volunteer work could be assisting families to widen their network of relationships and helping them to make use of support available within the community.” Many families report that they greatly appreciate the assistance of Home Start. Fiona added that the volunteers benefit too. She said: “Our volunteers enjoy learning new skills and they say how much they grow in confi dence themselves. Some volunteers use the invaluable experience to enable them to go on to study or work in social care.” A programme of ongoing training and support is also offered for Home Start volunteers, covering

specific subjects that are relevant to family support. There are also group sessions for volunteers to enable peer support, share ideas and allow for input towards the development of the valuable service. Fiona added: “Volunteers are at the heart of our work and we couldn’t do what we do without the time, care and commitment of these fabulous people.” For further information see www. homestartglasgownorth.org.uk or phone 0141 948 0441.

The West of Scotland Rugby Club have been asked to represent Scotland in a Primary 7 aged, six-nations themed tournament in Dublin later this year

The junior section of the West of Scotland Rugby Club is thrilled to have been asked to represent Scotland at the tournament in Malahide, a suburb of Dublin in Ireland in March.

A squad of 21 11-year-olds are making the trip over the Irish Sea for the special tournament – and plans are now underway for fundraising efforts to support the trip.

The tournament for Primary 7 teams includes top clubs from each of the six nations, England (Worcester Warriors), France (Clermont Auvergne), Ireland (Malahide), Wales and Italy, as well as Scotland.

Alan Louden, one of the coaches, said: “We are all very excited about the invitation to play at this tournament but it will require fi nancial support. Our aim is to raise £5,000 and we are busy making

Alan said: “The club has a thriving junior section with around 150 children playing every week, assisted by a large number of coaches and volunteers but we are always keen to encourage new members and volunteers to come along and join in.” The club’s Rugby Development Manager Millan Browne added: “As well as being great for fi tness and health, rugby teaches children team work, communication and offers a lot of enjoyment.” Contact Millan on 07917 793575, millanbrowne@hotmail.com or at www.westofscotlandfc.co.uk

WALK TO A STAR FOR CHARITY A team from a Bearsden hotel has walked a wall to reach a star to raise muchneeded funds for the Cure Crohn’s Colitis charity. The Boclair House Hotel walkers followed a route of around 30 miles along the Antonine Wall, starting in Bearsden and finishing at their sister venue, the Star & Garter, Linlithgow. Their fundraising efforts have so far raised ÂŁ762 for the Glasgowbased charity. Inspiration for the challenge came from the hotel’s general manager, Craig Haddow. Earlier this year, Craig walked a section of the Great Wall of China for HIT Scotland (Hospitality Industry Trust). He walked around 30 miles each day for 10 days in a row. Craig said: “We might not have a Great Wall that would rival China, but we do have the Antonine Wall in central Scotland and that is found close to our hotel.

Children from Bearsden, Milngavie and across Glasgow were invited to sign up to the weekly outdoor classes at Carbeth Guthrie Estate forest school, Blanefield. HELP! WE’RE A BIT STUMPED!

The Old Talbotians Cricket Club, based in Milngavie are looking for new local talent to join their successful team as well as an area to practice.

The Old Talbotians Cricket Club, which was formed by a group of like-minded people 12 years ago, is thought to be the only cricket club in East Dunbartonshire. However, despite being increasingly successful as a team, the club has recently started to lose members.

Richard McKinlay explained: “As we go into the 13th season, the club faces some challenges. Several of the younger players have moved away for study or work and some of the older stalwarts are starting to creak a bit. This means we need to recruit new players.”

The club joined the West Stirling Development League in 2010 and has risen to a respectable mid-table standard. Richard said: “The club started as a group of friends who decided they would like to play recreational cricket and we have enjoyed many seasons together. We would like to continue to do so.” Call Richard McKinlay on 0141 563 7871 if you can help or want to join.

Her Scottish Trail Running book includes 70 of the best routes and was first published in November 2012.

A Bearsden social group for people who suffer with memory loss are hoping to attract new members, volunteers and drivers. Daybreak meets in the hall at New Kilpatrick Church on Thursdays from 1.30pm to 3.30pm. Currently the group has a few new places for new members.

Daybreak was founded almost 14 years ago after it was recognised that there were few support groups for people with memory loss or dementia. While people with all kinds of memory loss are welcome at Daybreak, anyone who would like to attend requires to be assessed by a liaison nurse to ensure it is right for them.

The group also needs new volunteers to assist one-toone with members and drivers for transport to and from the meetings.

Morven said: “The nurse will come to their home and have a chat with the person who might attend Daybreak. This is just to make sure the group will suit them and that our volunteers can Morven describes the group as friendly. STATION BRIDGE-FOR-ALL OPENS A local community council was instrumental in the installation of an access-for-all bridge that recently opened to pedestrians in Westerton.

The bridge came about thanks to a proposal by Bearsden West Community Council and with support from former local councillor Keith Small. In 2014, one of the committee members fell twice in a week while walking over the railway bridge. BWCC believed the bridge needed to be replaced due to a “dire state of repair”. Kim Kilgour, BWCC treasurer, said: “After a lot of back and forward communication with NetworkRail they confi rmed an access-for-all bridge would be installed in 2019. As much as this was good news,

CALL TO DIG IN AND PLANT de-Clutter to help loCal Charities will be available for the whole community and we hope to have a monthly activity in Lennox Park for all ages.”

MCDT, which was set up in 2015 and is run by volunteers, delivers projects that are detailed in a Community Action Plan (CAP). Recently, the trust gained charitable status.

Decluttering is not only a great way to tidy - it can be positively therapeutic. There are a surprising number of websites dedicated to the art. Obvious beneficiaries are our local charity shops. They support good causes and the recycling/reuse of items which might otherwise go to landfill. With that in mind the charity shops are suggesting that it might be a good idea to have a post-Christmas clear out to help fund what is often life saving work. Volunteers have told us : “Taking time to de-clutter is a sure way to feel fabulous at the start of any season, especially if you know that you’re making a donation to a worthwhile cause.“

Milngavie Community Development Trust volunteers celebrate a successful Apple Day. The Trust are looking forward to a busy 2018

Milngavie residents of all ages are being called on to help with the planting of a community orchard in Lennox Park this month. Milngavie Community Development Trust is delighted to have secured funding for the orchard, which will be home to native species of fruit trees including apple, pears and plums. Now the trust is looking for volunteers of all ages to help plant the orchard on Saturday January 27 at 10.30am. Helpers should meet on the blaes pitch behind Tesco and wear

Callum Christie of MCDT said: “This is an exciting part of trying to make Lennox Park a more interactive landscape for the community. “We’ve listened to the opinions of local people and have worked hard to make their ideas a reality. As well as the orchard plans, a project in partnership with EDC, Milngavie in Bloom and the BID (Business Improvement District) will launch a project to improve the start of the West Highland Way route. The trust is also investigating the possibility of harnessing the power of the River Allander to provide renewable energy, while this summer will also see another popular Milngavie week taking place. Callum said: “This year is set to be a busy one with many projects progressing well and others being started.” If you want to become a member of MCDT and stay up to date with volunteer opportunities, sign up free at www.milngaviedt.co.uk.

The Magic of Mull series was originally inspired by Joan’s late husband’s connection with the Scottish island. Perhaps looking back to the Christmas season should also be included. The spirit of goodwill which sees us behave more like a community and lending a helping hand to those in need could be extended all the year round. Keep safe Hogmanay tips With the New Year parties both public and private comes some good advice from the Neighbourhood Watch team in our area. First of all they say when you are out try and keep within a group. Keeping with a number of people won’t leave you vulnerable to the types of crimes that are aimed towards individuals and will mean that other people can also keep an eye on you and vice versa.

you go to prevent the chances of it being spiked and keep an eye on anybody offering you a drink to ensure it is not tampered with. Book a taxi or a lift, organising a lift home or booking a taxi before going out will ensure that you get home safely and are not putting yourself in a position where you do not recognise the hire company, driver or area especially if you are out-of-town.

Always try and share transport with others. Keep in the spotlight – If you cannot stay in a group for whatever reason for the whole night or day always try to stick Safety in numbers is an old saying to public areas so that people that means always stick together are aware of you and don’t walk down unlit areas that can leave and don’t leave any members of you susceptible to danger. your group behind at anytime. Drink in moderation – It is easier said than done however when you drink more alcohol than usual you can lose your inhibitions and act out of character which in itself could present a dangerous situation. Always take your drink wherever

And while you are out, don't leave car keys, ID cards or valuables near windows, doors or letterboxes, where burglars can reach through to steal them. Lock your garden gates and side entrances. Don't leave tools lying around in the garden which could be used to break in.

Some of the classes in this area run in Killearn and The Western Baths Club, Glasgow. With friendly and supportive guidance to overcome any nerves, these 90 minute classes are initially led by a professionally trained music leader with songs drawn from a variety of genres. There is no need to be able to read music – you just need to sing in a group and enjoy yourself.

A professionally trained dancer guides the second half of the class where a variety of steps from different disciplines work the whole body, and includes cardio fitness elements, work on balance, strength and flexibility. The steps are simply broken down into achievable parts and build up over each term. With mental barriers down and laughter free flowing, friendships soon results and the classes tend to be very sociable. Several young athletes from Bearsden and Milngavie were delighted to bring home an inaugural nationwide triathlon trophy. The members of Glasgow Triathlon Club Youth Section won the Best Small Club in the Triathlon Scotland Legends Ranking Series 2017. The Legends Ranking Series rewards consistent participation in a series of events. In the new youth Legends Series there were seven triathlons and 11 aquathlons for juniors that took place across Scotland and throughout the season. Participants gain points for every event they compete in and depending on where they come in each race. As well as individual rankings, the total scores from

club members give an overall club placing. Glasgow Triathlon Club (GTC) youth section was launched in August 2013 and now has 70 members, including youngsters from Bearsden and Milngavie. Fraser Donaldson, of Bearsden, took first place in both the aquathlon rankings and the

I’m so happy to be in the best club and hope that it continues to keep on succeeding.” Mia Padmanabhan, also of Bearsden, was second overall in the triathlon rankings in the age group 13 to 14. The Bearsden Academy pupil said: “I'm really pleased with my place as I worked hard all year for that. I'm really proud that GTC juniors won the club rankings. It was a real team effort.” Youth head coach Wendy Gorman is delighted by the success. She said: “It’s great to see how the GTC youths are progressing and it is good to see their results recognised.” See www.glasgowtriathlonclub.co.uk

Here’s what some of our customers had to say about our work: “We had our shower room completely refurbished and are delighted with the finished product. It was very clear from start to finish that Stephen is passionate about his job, the quality of workmanship is first class and we have no hesitation in recommending this company. We would definitely use them again.” Mr and Mrs Quibell (Shandon) “Delighted with our new bathroom.Excellent job throughout from start to finish by a great hard working team.” Scott and Fiona Holt (Bearsden) “Stevie has done two bathrooms for me, a small en suite shower room and a guest bathroom. They presented different challenges but both were completed on time, on budget and beautifully finished. It was important to

me to have someone I could trust in my home when I was at work. The guys just got on with things, dealt with the unexpected when it arose and always left my house tidy and clean for me to come home to. What more could you want?” Dr . Jennifer Brown (Craigton) “Stevie and his team did a wonderful job of transforming our old, tired bathroom into a beautiful new space. Stevie and his team worked extremely hard to get the majority of the upheaval done while we were on holiday, minimising disruption to us. Stevie takes great pride in his work and that is evident in the end result. He was quick to respond to any snags and we are very happy with the final result. Thankyou!” Mr and Mrs Timar (Killearn)

A new advanced course to help people to trace their family history launches this month. The advanced family history course, organised by the Archives and Local Studies team at East Dunbartonshire Leisure and Culture Trust, follows on from the successful beginners’ course. It will run on Tuesdays from 7pm to 8.30pm for six weeks, starting on January 30 at the William Patrick Library in Kirkintilloch. The cost is £45. The course will be led by an archivist who will provide advice on tracing ancestors and teaching how archives can help with their family history research. The New Year is now upon us and one resolution we can all make is to stay safe at home. Your home is where you should feel most secure and now is the perfect time to carry out some quick home safety checks. Prevent falls: Make sure hallways, stairs and paths are well lit and clear of objects. Secure all rugs to the floor so they do not move when you walk on them, and try not to place area rugs at the bottom or top of stairs. Bathroom hazards: Have grab bars installed in the shower and near the toilet to make getting around easier and safer and put rubber mats in the bathtub to prevent slipping. Fire safety: Many fire departments offer free home

fire safety checks, so be sure to contact them to schedule a home safety check. Key safe code: With cleaners, care staff, doctors and delivery men all potentially having the code to get into your home – change the code every January, it reduces the risk of unauthorised people accessing your keys. emergency numbers: Keep a list of emergency numbers by each phone. Be sure to list numbers for: local emergency services, fire department, police department, family member or friend to call in case of emergency, and the doctor’s office I hope you had a wonderful Christmas and the Team from Home Instead wish you all the best for 2018.

A recently launched campaign to raise money for a new boiler and installation on the iconic Maid of the Loch steamship is already more than halfway towards its £125,000 target after only fi ve weeks. Our main picture shows the Maid of the Loch on its maiden voyage in 1953

A crowdfunding campaign to help get the Maid of the Loch sailing on Loch Lomond again has inspired an impressive international response. Within five weeks more than half of the target of £125,000 required for a new boiler and installation had been donated. By the closing date of the boiler crowdfunding appeal of December 8 the figure was at £82,957. The largest donation of £25,000 came in late November from Graeme Varley from Manchester. He was born in Greenock and

happy memories of being a teenager in the early sixties sailing on the Maid inspired his support of the campaign. He said: “The Maid of the Loch is an important part of our Scottish heritage and I would encourage everyone who cares about this to make a donation, however small, so that once again, she can grace the waters of Loch Lomond.”

Another donation of almost £3,000 came from Calgary in Alberta, Canada. The Humble family made the cash gift in memory of author and journalist Ben Humble MBE (1903-1977), who overcame deafness to become a pioneer of Mountain Rescue in Scotland. Ben’s books and countless articles covered every aspect of the Scottish outdoors. Soon after the end of World War II he shared his life long enthusiasm for the Clyde and loch steamers with

a popular series of guidebooks which included Sailing Down the Clyde, Sailing up Loch Lomond, Through the Trossachs and The Three Lochs. Were he alive today, Ben’s family say his voice would be among the loudest in support of our campaign. The campaign also included an amnesty appeal to find parts from the UK’s last built paddle steamship that went missing after she was left derelict in 1981. Another far-distant response came from New Zealand. John Beveridge, chair of the Loch Lomond Steamship Company, the charity that looks after the Maid, said: “We got a surprise parcel

from Alastair Brown, who was the fi rst Purser to work on the Maid. He’s in his eighties now and lives in New Zealand. “Alastair heard about the appeal and has sent us the original clicker used to count the people on and off of the ship. Alastair says that if he can make the trip he wants to come back to Loch Lomond, to act as purser on the fi rst voyage after the Maid is re-launched.” The original build plate – with the name of the shipbuilders and date – was also dropped off to the ship the very day they made the amnesty appeal. The 7th Annual “Wobbly” Festive Run event raised £2000 for two charities last month. Some 100 people turned out to take part in the half-marathon, 10k and two new 5k and 2k races that started and finished at Anniesland Lock 27. The charities that will benefit from the money raised are Sporting Memories Foundation (Scotland) and Funding Neuro, which was founded by Bryn Williams, of Bearsden, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease aged just 36. To take part, participants were asked to make an “honesty” donation – or whatever they could afford.

Top Tips

Art for Trails and Tails A project to create 40 artworks as part of the Trails and Tales programme will start this month.

FRESH VACUuM

Pop a cinnamon stick into your vacuum cleaner to help add a nice scent to your house the next time you do the carpets.

The art installations, such as sculptures and heritage films, will be placed along 11 trails, which are being created in East Dunbartonshire communities, including Bearsden, Westerton and Milngavie. Examples include a tree installation at Kilmardinny House and film projections at Bearsden Community Hub and Kirkintilloch Town Hall.

rollING clothes

The heritage routes, which have been devised through consultation with communities over the last two years, will also include wayfinding and QR codes so they engage people with local stories as they walk.

Rolling your clothes in drawers makes them easy to find and you can also fit a lot more in than if you traditionally fold and stack them.

Councillor Jim Gibbons, Convener of East Dunbartonshire Council's Place, Neighbourhood & Corporate Assets Committee, said: “The Trails and Tales programme,

supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, East Dunbartonshire Council and Creative Scotland, will create a series of outdoor sculptural arts and heritage trails across East Dunbartonshire. “A huge amount of work has been carried out by the Trails and Tales team within local communities and it will be very interesting to see how the project develops as the artworks are installed.” The Trails and Tales programme explores heritage and local stories with people of all ages and works with care homes, sheltered housing, community groups, schools and early years.

Instead of collections on New Year’s Day and January 2, these collections run two days later on the Wednesday and Thursday. For everyone else, the collections resume as normal on Wednesday the 3rd. You should ensure your bins and food caddies are out on the kerbside by 7am. The council is also encouraging people to recycle during a period when many people have a lot more waste. We can dabble in distractions or therapies for some relief, although a

Better still if it could help everyone else, but that’s a tall order. Well, not really, it’s actually simple. I said simple, not easy. The big snag is we don’t want to spoil our favourite assumptions. Better solutions surround us but we resist or miss them because we think we know what’s what, and that’s why we struggle more than we should. Crucially, having the tools to find better answers in life rather than mainly following set ways can help us to relax and boost our confidence. We also become less dependent and less prone to upset – and that’s just the beginning. Deeper happiness requires deeper digging. Uncovering our hidden depths and how they shape our world is a good place to start. Our upbringing, concerns, tendencies, priorities, natural design, selective vision and creative reasoning, all
