CALL OUT TO JOIN JUNIOR DUKE

A Bearsden mum and teacher is hoping to roll out an innovative children’s challenge programme to local schools and groups. Dawn Waugh launched her Junior Duke for youngsters in Primary 4 to Primary 7 in 2007 and Mini Duke for children aged P2 and P3 in 2011. The concept sees children completing seven of 10 challenges each academic year across a variety of themes, including cooking, craft, domestic and outdoors. As they become older, the challenges become more complex. Mini Duke is the build up programme to Junior Duke. Task outcomes are monitored by trained adults and the children

are awarded a badge and certificate on completion. Started in the school where Dawn teaches, Hutchesons’ Grammar, it has now been adopted by nine more schools and it’s hoped that other primaries and groups will be keen to be part of the challenge programme. Dawn said: “It all came about because I was thinking of ways to give children of all abilities a challenge to work towards. I liked the idea of the Duke of Edinburgh scheme for older children and also the badges

system at the Brownies, Cubs, Guides and Scouts. “The challenges are meant to promote a child’s life skills, independence, responsibility and confidence, such as learning how to repair a punctured bike tyre, making meals, cooking cakes, sewing on buttons, climbing a hill and creating a first aid kit. “The challenges progress each year and we have found that children really enjoy working towards their annual awards. Many do go on to enrol with Duke of Edinburgh. “Having started Junior Duke and Mini Duke at the school where I teach I am keen now to offer it to other primary schools and perhaps to organised children’s groups.”

The Junior Duke and Mini Duke programme is based on a booklet of challenges. Children either produce a photograph as evidence of a task being completed or they perform the task in front of an “assessor” adult. The kids are then required to write a self-assessment of the task. Dawn said: “The assessors do need to have followed a training programme run by Junior Duke so that monitoring and award giving are consistent but it doesn’t take up too much time and the benefits to children are fantastic. “We have had so many positive results from both children and their parents or carers.” To find out more see www.juniorduke.com

WHW DOUBLE FOR SAMH

The eight jubilant runners at the completion of their 192 mile run on the West Highland Way

A group of eight runners took on a challenging winter run and raised more than four times their cash target for a mental health charity. The project, dubbed Pyllon Endeavour, was led by the three-times winner of the West Highland Way Race, Paul Giblin, who is better known as Pyllon.

Incredibly, they finished in 24 hours and six minutes. It takes many people a week to walk the West Highland Way, from Milngavie to Fort William, one way.

The aim was to run 192 miles out-and-back on the famous West Highland Way as a continuous relay. The athletes ran four sections totalling 24 miles each.

In doing so, the team have so far raised more than £10,500 for the Scottish Association of Mental Health (SAMH).

They needed to average seven minutes and 30 seconds per mile and run non-stop with almost 30,000ft of ascent over rough ground and with 16 hours of darkness.

“Pyllon Endeavour was about raising awareness of the benefits of

“As well as helping people to train hard for what can be a very solo endeavour, Pyllon connects people in powerful ways and by taking on the challenge of running ‘out and back’ as a team, we hope to inspire others to start their own ultra journey.” The other runners were Rob Turner, Marco Consani, Chris Crowley, Eoin Lennon, Graham Connolly, James Stewart and John Connolly You can still donate at www.justgiving.com/fundraising/ pyllon-endeavour

TEAM’S BRIDGE TO SUCCESS enough players for six tables, with members playing in a competitive scenario. Peter says: “Players are able to come along without a partner, which is unusual in the local area, and I think this has been key for many people being able to progress competitively with Bridge.

A new competitive league team at a local bridge club is showing promising success with four wins out of four games played so far. The “Bimps”, formed from members of the “Class of 2018” Bearsden Bridge Academy, is playing in the Scottish Bridge Union (SBU) West District League Division 5.

It is a major achievement for our eight players and reflects deservedly on their dedication to the study of the game and to becoming more proficient with experience and the odd tutorial.”

“The club has an educational bent, but with competition at its centre, and involves members gaining in confidence with the bidding and playing of a hand, scoring efficiently and an appreciation of the ethics and etiquette of the game. “The aim for many is to go on to play in the bigger Glasgow clubs or at one of many bridge congresses being run by our parent body, the SBU, to which we are affiliated.” Anyone with limited experience is welcome to join the bridge club any Monday evening. The academy also runs Bridge Classes on Monday afternoons, although a new intake will not take place until September. For more information contact Peter at: pfe263@gmail.com.

An exciting project has transformed the first stage of Scotland’s famous long-distance trail, the West Highland Way. A large “Welcome to the West Highland Way” panel followed by 11 further artworks relating the story of this internationally renowned walk now lead you from Milngavie town centre to the start of the walk. Through Milngavie BID, many local businesses identified a need to revamp the “disappointing first 100 metres of the West Highland Way”. This entailed walking from the obelisk in the pedestrian area by way of a ramp, through an ill-defined service yard also used for informal parking and overshadowed by the backs of the shops.

The project has cost around £60,000, which was raised from a number of community sources. Three young architects, David Wylie, Mark Johnston and Fraser Maitland, supported and mentored by Page/Park Architects further developed the concept. The final design, which was installed last month, is a series of panels, more than two metres high, connected by varying numbers of vertical timbers each representing a mile and totalling 96 miles, which is the distance to Fort William.

A group of almost 30 women in Milngavie set themselves the target of raising £2000 for charity by running 5k every day in December. The ladies joined the popular annual fitness campaign called the Marcothon. The brainchild of two Glasgow runners, Debbie and Marco Consani, Marcothon encourages people to run three miles, or for 25 minutes, (whichever comes first) each day from December 1 to 31, including Christmas Day.

Bloodwise, which funds research to improve treatment and care for people living with blood cancer.

The Milngavie Mums’ Marcothon group decided to join the annual event and raise money for two good causes at the same time.

The private sports centre, Nuffield Milngavie, also offered support to the Milngavie Mums’ Marcothon by allowing all participants to use their facilities for the month of December.

The money will go to The Everest Centre, which is a specialist project within the Brain Tumour Charity researching slow growing brain tumours in children, and

Both of these charities are poignant to the Marcothon Mums because they have helped children and families connected to the group.

The event in Milngavie on Saturday January 9 at 10am is organised by the Clean Sweep branch of Milngavie in Bloom. The group will meet outside the Fraser Centre on Douglas Street. A spokesperson said: “All equipment and a warm welcome will be provided. We want to keep our town tidy as we embark on 2019.” For more details call 0141 956 6147 or email ronamacleod@ hotmail.co.uk. A former pupil at Bearsden Academy has described winning a prestigious bridal designer award as “the cherry on the cake”. Megan Pankay, née Cuthbertson, owns bespoke bridal wear label, NutMeg Couture, which was awarded the Scottish VOWS Bridal Designer of the Year 2018. She said: “I got married myself in October last year, so this award has just been the cherry on top of the best year of my life.” Megan, 29, left the local secondary school in 2006 and

went on to complete a course in Fashion Business at Caledonian University. In 2010, she founded her own business, initially making special occasion gowns, before launching NutMeg Bridal five years ago. HELP POINT FOR DEMENTIA

parts. The results of that can be astonishing. Playlist for Life have announced a new 'Help Point' in New Kilpatrick Parish Church

An innovative UK music and dementia charity project has announced the launch of a new 'help point' in a Bearsden church halls. Playlist for Life uses the music of a person’s life to keep them connected to themselves and their loved ones while they live with dementia. The charity was founded in 2013 by broadcaster Sally Magnusson, the daughter of the late Magnus Magnusson, after she and her family witnessed the effect of music on her mother’s dementia. Mamie, who lived in Balmore, died in 2012. Morven White, who volunteers with Playlist with Life, said:

“Research shows that personally meaningful music can evoke memories in people affected by dementia. “It can improve mood, manage symptoms of memory loss, prompt conversation and most importantly strengthen relationships and reconnect families. “Some people describe it lighting up the brain like a fireworks display. If parts of your brain are damaged, the music can still reach those other

“A number of local Help Points are being set up to assist people to access appropriate music, by becoming ‘music detectives’ and by helping them to find the most appropriate listening device for them and how to use the Playlist to best help their friend or relative.” The new Bearsden Help Point is located in New Kilpatrick Parish Church, New Halls and is being manned every Friday morning from 10am to 11.30am by Morven and her colleague Trish Robertson.

January 2019 | What's Up Doc?

HAVE YOUR SAY ON LOCAL PLAN What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn

This month: HERE’S TO YOUR HEALTH…

Local people have the chance to consult on the new Local Development Plan this month. The Local Development Plan 2 (LDP), being drawn up by East Dunbartonshire Council, will set the future use and protection of land in the region. The plan will establish where new development should be and it will cover issues of housing, transport, town centres and the environment. The public engagement period is from December to February and there will be an information drop-in session at Bearsden Community Hub on January 21 from 3pm to 7pm. A questionnaire is available to allow local people to comment on land use change and planning issues in local communities. A separate “call-for-sites” form is also available for anyone to

identify site-specific suggestions for development. Councillor Billy Hendry, Convenor of the Place, Neighbourhood and Corporate Assets Committee, said: “The Local Development Plan is an essential document that guides all aspects of planning and development, from the location of new housing to the layout of town centres. “I would encourage as many people as possible to make their views known and help shape the future development of our communities.” For information and details of other drop-in sessions in the region see www.eastdunbarton. gov.uk/council/consultations.

The World Health Organisation defines Health as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, not just the absence of illness”. While many people probably woke up on New Year’s Day in a state, I am not sure it would have been one of “complete well-being”! That said, the start of a New Year gives us a chance to wipe the slate clean and make a fresh start with life. Although health can be subject to factors outside our control, getting the most out of life depends upon the balance of what we do physically, mentally and socially.

That will mean different things to different people. Some may need to reconnect with friends or family, or simply ask for support. Others may want to improve their psychological outlook, either by getting professional help, dealing with alcohol or drug problems or using methods such as mindfulness to reduce stress. Or it may simply be a commitment to getting more regular exercise, losing weight or stopping smoking. Whatever it means to you, try not to get derailed by short term distractions, but stick to a longer term plan for 2019!

STAY SAFE DRIVE recognise abuse through the Speak Out Stay Safe programme. “This vital service is helping to educate children to recognise the signs of abuse and that it’s ok for them to speak to a trusted adult about it – and I believe this is hugely important. “Children need to know that someone will listen to them.”

Scottish hockey player Rob Harwood visited Castlehill Primary School to give a Speak Out Stay Safe assembly

A Scottish hockey player from Milngavie has joined forces with the NSPCC Scotland to help to deliver a ground-breaking campaign. Rob Harwood, 21, was part of a group of volunteers from the children’s charity who attended Castlehill Primary School in Bearsden to give a Speak Out Stay Safe assembly. The NSPCC runs the assemblies in primary schools to help children to recognise different types of abuse and to feel confident about speaking out to a trusted adult.

The 21-year-old hockey star, who scored against Australia in last year’s Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, said: “The NSPCC is a very important charity for protecting children and helping them to

NSPCC Scotland began the assemblies in Scotland in 2012 and since then its staff and team of dedicated volunteers have spoken to tens of thousands of schoolchildren, including many schools in East Dunbartonshire. Following the assembly in November, headteacher of Castlehill Primary, Ms Kenney, said: “I’m very grateful to the NSPCC for coming to the school to talk to the children to educate them about issues that can, sadly, affect their lives. “It is so important that they learn, in an age-appropriate way, about the dangers they face in the real world and online and that they know they can tell if they are worried about something.” See learning.nspcc.org.uk/ services/speak-out-stay-safe.

I suppose I should be upfront about this, I’m writing about something I’ve never done and I’ll be keeping up that tradition in 2019, (writes Nick Cowie).

Why? Well making big promises to yourself at the start of the year is exactly what you shouldn’t do to reach some of the popular destinations in our panel. The Romans started the whole fandango. They made vows to the god Janus in the hope of reward. I’d only comment that Janus was a two faced god and so unsurprisingly didn’t come up with the goods. Neither will a Big Resolution in the month named after him. A study from the University of Bristol which involved 3,000 people, showed that 88% of those who set New Year resolutions failed. Those who did achieve their goal made it by NOT making a big resolution to start with.

If you resolve say to lose a stone, drink less, take up running and save £10 a week, by January 31 chances are you’ll have run once, strained a ligament, put on a couple of pounds by comforting yourself with biscuits and saved nothing. You’ve joined the 88%. Instead, in January, aim to lose two pounds, don’t run, walk one bus or train stop, drink one less glass of wine a week, buy one less coffee. Repeat and slightly escalate in February, again in

POPULAR NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS

March and April, e.g. two fewer coffees and wines, another 400 yards walking. By May you’ll have lost 10 pounds, become a regular walker and be saving a heck of a lot more than a tenner a week from cutting back the alcohol and caffeine. The principle works whatever the goal. By December you could be a different person and what’s more you’ll have hardly noticed it happening.

QUARTET TO PLAY AT CAIRNS

Legal Matters with Gill Bowman BA LLB

This month: CHILD CAR SEAT SAFETY This is a subject I have previously discussed. However, it’s a good time of the year to remind everyone of the rules surrounding car seat safety. Although it is clearly not a legal requirement, it is important that children do not wear their thick, cosy jackets or snow suits while strapped into their car seats as the belts are unable to be tightened enough to secure them appropriately. Children can be vulnerable passengers in motor vehicles and therefore the law does provide that any child under 135cm in height or 12 years of age must use an appropriate restraint, with certain exceptions of

unexpected journeys, taxis and buses. Car seats must be EU approved and should have the required (E) label. All children under three years old must use a car seat, whether they are traveling in the front or back. In the event there is no seatbelt to allow the appropriate seat to be fitted then the child should not travel. It is also important to be aware that you must not use a rearfacing child seats where a front airbag is activated. It is the driver’s legal responsibility to ensure that children are using the correct restraint. Failure to do so is a criminal offence and you could receive a fine of £500.

NEW PITCHES NEW FUNDING BID AT POND FOR SCHOOLS

The Trust has visited other ponds around Glasgow and seen what can be done in similar situations. MCDT has also asked specialist aquatic ecology company, Water Gems, to make a plan for the Milngavie pond. Fiona said: “The dream would be to transform the pond, creating colour, visual focus, improving water quality biodiversity and creating an even more improved community asset.

The opening of Castlehill Primary pitch

Seven Bearsden and Milngavie primary schools are part of a sports pitch replacement programme.

MCDT have launched a fund-raising initiative to improve Milngavie pond

Baljaffray, Colquhoun Park, Clober, Craigdhu, Milngavie and Mosshead schools are set to benefit from the £1.45 million project, which is part of the council’s 10-year Capital Investment Plan.

A fund-raising initiative has been launched by Milngavie Community Development Trust (MCDT) to further improve a Milngavie pond.

A new multi-use games area pitch at Castlehill Primary has already opened. Councillor Billy Hendry, Convener of the Place, Neighbourhood & Corporate

The project aims to naturalise the pond edge at Milngavie CE Centre, which will help in efforts to improve water quality, and to install another larger island.

Fiona Crosbie, one of MCDT’s directors, said: “The new pump and fountain, financed by East Dunbartonshire Council, has already made a significant difference to the water.

The past year has seen great progress at the pond, including the installation of a new nesting island for swans, the planting of 350 native species, a new pump and fountain system and a children’s activity bench on the bank of the pond.

“We want to do more now to naturalise sections of the concrete edge, planting native species in a back-filled area. The plants will not only have a cleaning effect on the water but will also provide habitat and refuge for small aquatic animals and resident birds.”

Assets Committee, said, "I am pleased to hear about the strides that have been made towards replacement pitches at schools in Bearsden and Milngavie. “The new facilities will greatly enhance outdoor physical education for our young people.”

FIRE SAFETY CHECKS FOR OVER-60S Local senior citizens are being urged to take up the offer of free Home Fire Safety Visits this winter. New statistics released by The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) show that more than half of accidental house fire fatalities involved people over the age of 60. Some 61 per cent of all the home fire fatalities in the last five years involved people over 60, while more than a third of accidental dwelling fire casualties (34 per cent) were also people in this age group.

they are more likely to be affected by limited mobility or long-term medical conditions. “Limited sight or hearing can mean an individual is less likely to be aware of fire when it breaks out. “We want to make sure that every older person is offered support to reduce the risk of fire in the home.”

A SFRS spokesperson said: “There are many reasons why older people could be affected by fire.

If you are aged over 60 or have a friend, relative or neighbour who is in this age group, you can request a free home fire safety visit, which takes around 20 minutes.

“They may spend more time at home or live alone and

3: PREVENTING AND TREATING UTI INFECTIONS IN THE ELDERLY

If a Urinary tract infection is suspected, a doctor will take a urine sample and sometimes a blood test. The infection may be treated with a simple round of antibiotics. Infection prevention with some simple tips and rules: 1 Make sure the elderly stay hydrated – this can be a difficult struggle if they are embarrassed about incontinence – always provide their favourite drink in an accessible area – encourage water as cranberry juice may irritate some infections that are already present in some people. 2 Make access to the bathroom as easy and as frequently as possible.

Offer incontinence aids or bed pans to reassure them. Encourage good hygiene by providing wet wipes to make cleaning easier. 3 Avoid perfumed soaps, toilet papers. 4 All linens, towels, underwear or bed pans that come in contact with even a small amount of urine should be sanitised frequently to kill bacteria. 5 Consult your doctor – advice is better than treating yourself with home remedies. I hope the advice I have offered in the last 3 sessions have helped build an insight into a very common and distressing condition. Keep safe!

The newly refurbished East Dunbartonshire Dementia Resource Centre in Bearsden has been re-opened by Alzheimer Scotland. The centre, located on Milngavie Road, will continue to serve as a community hub to support and connect people living with dementia and their carers and families across the region. The opening celebration at the end of November was led by Provost Alan Brown from East Dunbartonshire Council along with Alzheimer Scotland Chief Executive Henry Simmons,

centre staff, local volunteers and supporters The new-look Alzheimer Scotland Dementia Resource Centre, which originally opened in 2011, brings dementia to the high street by providing a stimulating and sociable environment for people living with dementia, their families and carers to access information, advice and support locally.

One of the main features of the Resource Centre is the small specialist day service – available Tuesday to Friday – which can be accessed by people with dementia using Self-Directed Support. It also provides the base for Alzheimer Scotland’s dedicated Community Activities Organiser, who works to provide a range of groups and activities including, Football Memories, Mind That Song and Come Dine with Us. Provost Brown said: “The new facility offers a lively and relaxed environment to provide support and advice, as well as a range of stimulating activities for everyone to enjoy. “Knowing the work that Alzheimer Scotland undertake, I trust the centre will continue to help people living with dementia to adjust and cope with their new challenges, as well as helping them to feel included in their community.” To find out more about the support available from Alzheimer Scotland locally call 0141 946 0966 or email alastairblack@alzscot.org.

MAKE TRACKS FOR FUN DAY

fun RECYCLE YOUR CALENDARS There are only 14 possible calendars. In 2019, you can re-use calendars from these years: 1918, 1929, 1935, 1946, 1957, 1963, 1974, 1985, 1991, 2002 and keep your 2019 calendars for 2030, 2041, 2047, 2058.

Children and adults are invited to join a mountain biking family fun day this month – and to get involved in launching a new club.

hacks SCHEDULE YOUR RESOLUTIONS A time-frame is a good motivator for achieving your resolution. The way you assess your short-term progress towards the ultimate longterm goal. Buy a calendar or diary so you can plan your actions for the coming weeks or months, and decide when and how often to evaluate.

TrailCoach, a mountain bike tuition and coaching company, is organising a day at the trails developed by the Endura Lifecycle Trust near Balfron on Sunday January 6. Children will learn a host of top tips from coaches and make new friends while they ride the trails.

“Most clubs rely on volunteers, so we are attempting to create a premium club for the west central area of Scotland, potentially with a ‘roaming venue’ to make sure the travel is fair for everyone. We have an abundance of potential spots to use, so we think it’s a good idea to explore them all.

The fun day is also the opportunity to be involved in creating an MTB club. Ramsay MacFarlane, founder of TrailCoach, said: “With mountain biking booming we think the time is right to launch an all-new mountain biking club for children. It will be a club where kids can come to learn bike skills, build confidence and socialise with other biking enthusiasts.

“At the family fun day there will be a questionnaire for participants to complete to get a better idea of what will work best.”

The child “drop-off” ticket is £40 for kids who will be unsupervised by parents. It’s vital that riders bring their own fully functional bikes and kit, including a helmet and gloves. Knee and elbow pads are also recommended. Wear appropriate clothing and bring a change of clothes for afterwards. See www.trailcoach.co.uk/event/ family-fun-day or call Ramsay on 07729 900 997.

There are two ticket types for the fun day. A family ticket is £10 for any number of adults and kids, as long as the parents/guardians hang around to supervise their own kids.

DON’T NEGLECT YOUR FEET THIS YEAR 3 Simple Questions 1. Do you suffer from heel, ankle, knee or lower back pain? 2. Do you know the cause, or having difficulty getting an answer? 3. Bearsden Choir celebrated their golden anniversary last month with a special performance of Handel\s Messiah in Glasgow City Halls

MESSIAH IS GOLDEN CHOICE Bearsden Choir has celebrated its Golden anniversary year by giving a special performance of Handel’s iconic Messiah. The historic mixed-voice choir, which was founded in 1968 for a one-off performance of Messiah, was thrilled to perform the oratorio again almost to the very day in December. The choir gave its first performance as the Bearsden Burgh Choir on the December 18 in its first year in the former Rio Cinema in Bearsden. Last month, the same work was performed at Glasgow City Halls on the 16th. The performance was conducted by Andrew Nunn, a graduate of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (RCS). Included among the soloists was the choir’s Honorary President, and the voice of BBC Radio Scotland’s Classics Unwrapped, Jamie Macdougall.

Carol Young, Vice Chair of Bearsden Choir, said: “That very first performance of Messiah was intended as a one-off but enthused by the success of the performance, the members made it a permanent choir. It’s hard to believe that we are 50 years old and the choir has enjoyed many performances since.”

Bearsden Choir is acclaimed as one of the most accomplished amateur choirs in Scotland. The choir has a wide repertoire, from classical to contemporary. It is also well known for its support and encouragement of young people. Last year, they encouraged schools to sing with them. The outcome was a performance of Hayden’s Nelson Mass together with 280 pupils from 11 local schools, and The RCS Orchestra.

Crispin Best, a spokesperson for the choir, said: “There is nothing quite like making music with others. The The choir welcomes new members, whether they can read sense of achievement is huge and we love to entertain our audience.” music, or not. Bearsden Choir has also launched a 50th Anniversary Appeal in the hope of seeking continued funding through benefactors.

RAISING FUNDS FOR ROBBIE Prior to the 23rd, the school’s fundraising feat was augmented with organised games and a raffle. On “Robbie’s” day, pupils could wear blue and donate to the non-school uniform day. Robbie, also an avid fan of Rangers Football Club, is said to be a brave and positive young man. In light of his new situation, his fellow students and teachers decided to help him in a practical way and created a “wear blue for Robbie” day, which was held on 23rd November.

Guest appearances were a highlight of the day and first to arrive were Derek Johnstone and Broxy Bear, followed by Robbie’s parents. The guests were also invited to attend the football game. Handsome donations were also given by local businesses and Rangers FC. Robbie’s mum said: “We are completely overwhelmed by the support and community spirit from Douglas Academy. This will give Robbie a real boost.” The £2,000 raised will go towards the necessary alterations to the family home.
