MARK TAKES ON ULTIMATE CHALLENGE Bearsden runner Mark Keddie completed a challenge that is acclaimed as the “toughest foot race on earth” earlier this summer. Mark, 46, took part in the legendary six-day, 250km (156-mile) Marathon des Sables in April. Participants run the equivalent of 5.5 marathons through tough terrain, including endless dunes, rocky jebels (hills) and across white-hot salt plains. The sun is a constant enemy with temperatures regularly reaching 50C. The Data Compliance Officer, said: “It was a great experience and something I wanted to do to push myself after many years of running ultra races in Scotland. “Every day was a unique adventure. I was so focused on running I had to remind myself of where I was and to look around and take in the amazing scenery.”

However there were times when it was tough. He said: “I found the running demanding when the temperature started to push 50C and there was still a good few hours of jebels (hills) to be climbed.”

“When you are living with another seven people in basic conditions, a sense of humour is vital, especially when a sandstorm rips through the camp and takes your tent down in the middle of the night. Luckily I had great tent mates who I am still in touch with.”

Camp life is a big part of the experience of the race. Mark explained: “All competitors stay in Berber tents, which are

The successful projects, including sports, song, dance, story telling, arts, crafts, film, art, well-being, play, food, flowers, music and reading, were chosen after an on-line vote.

The Optimal team, (left to right): Dr Claire McGoldrick, Clinical Psychologist; Lucia Longfield, Clinical Associate in Applied Psychology; Dr Rosie Begbie, Clinical Psychologist; Dr Joanne Robertson, Principal Clinical Psychologist and Team Lead

A new mental health initiative is aiming to raise awareness of support for the “older people population” of East Dunbartonshire. The NHS-funded OPTIMAL team comprises Clinical Psychologists whose aim is to increase access to psychological therapies for older people. Depression, anxiety and dementia are the three most common mental health issues that older people may face. While studies have shown that a quarter of people over the age of 65 suffer from depression, more than 85 per cent do not seek any support.

Research has also shown that older people believe that depression and anxiety are part of the ageing process and therefore do not think to get support. Some also fear that treatment will require a hospital stay. Dr Claire McGoldrick, a Clinical Psychologist with the Older People's Psychology Service, said: “The fact is that very few people will require

“There is a positive evidence base for psychological therapies for common mental health difficulties with older people, including cognitive behaviour therapy.” If you, or anyone you know, is suffering with mental health issues, the OPTIMAL team would like to urge they contact their GP, who can refer them on to the appropriate service. These include Primary Care Mental Health Teams that offer support for those with mild to moderate mental health difficulties and specialist Older People’s Community Mental Health Teams for those with more severe or complex mental health difficulties.

The winning team, all in P4 at Bearsden Primary School are Lucy Langland, Autumn & Rory Hunter and Haris Good

Pupils from Bearsden Primary School have won a West Region Primary Schools County Finals tennis tournament for the first time. The children, from primaries two and four, clinched the West of Scotland Primary Schools tennis tournament title last month. The team was formed by Gordon Wilson, the head coach at Bearsden Lawn Tennis club, who coaches all but one of the primary school team members. It is the ninth year of the tournament and there was a rise in the number of local authorities and schools taking part. Each local authority organised a tournament before the regional finals at Scotstoun Leisure Centre on June 4. More than 130 Schools

and 520 children took part in the competition. The finals saw 36 children from nine schools competing and it was the first time that Bearsden PS has won the competition. The winning team at the East Dunbartonshire heat on May 20 at the Nuffield Gym in Milngavie comprised P2 pupils Oran McBride and Xander Hunter and P4 pupils Autumn Hunter and Rory Hunter. The winning team at the finals were P4 pupils Autumn and Rory Hunter, as well as Haris Good and Lucy Langlands (who is a member of Thorn tennis club).

Budding young actors and actresses are invited to join a Mad Hatter Summer School this month. UPBEAT Theatre has joined forces with Creative Spark to offer their second summer school in Bearsden! MEANDERS AND GARSCUBE WIN TOP TROPHY BOAT TRIPS FOR NTS GROUP

that’s a huge representation for a championship event.

Olympic athlete Callum Hawkins presents the Lindsays Trophy to Jill O’Neil, club president of Garscube Harriers

The National Trust for Scotland Bearsden and Milngavie Members' Centre has a busy month planned. On Tuesday July 3, the group will head off for a Mugdock Mystery Meander, before an outing further afield on Friday July 6. Members are heading to South Queensferry for a boat trip to see the three historic bridges that span the Firth of Forth. They will follow this with an outing to NTS Culross in Fife. The NTS group has more than 300 members, who come together for social activities and fundraising to support the Trust. Find out more at www.ntscentres. org.uk/Bearsden/index.html

Garscube ended the season with a total of 230 runners and 16 athletes ahead of runner-up Giffnock, which won the trophy in 2016 and 2017. This year, the race series was attended by 103 clubs from across Scotland, each of which had at least one finisher at one of the events. This compares to 75 clubs last season.

Olympian athlete Callum Hawkins gave high praise to the achievements of a local running club while presenting a special trophy. Scottish runner Callum, who competed in the 2016 Summer Olympics, was assisting Scottish Athletics in awarding Garscube Harriers with the Lindsays Trophy. The club won the competition for cross-country participation at three national championship events over the winter. Garscube rose from fifth place last year in the Lindsays National XC to top of the table.

with Dr Nick Dunn

This month: PLANNING AHEAD…

Adelaide comments: “At Westerton Care Home, we are delighted to be an established part of the local community, and very much look forward to being able to welcome a number of new residents to the Westerton family. We would be delighted to arrange a tour for any individuals and families. The team look forward to welcoming you soon!” For more information, or to arrange a visit, please contact Westerton Care Home on 0141 942 5834 or visit www.westertoncarehome.com

A few weeks ago the Scottish government produced a report on health priorities for the next decade. It encourages innovative and new ideas to bring about a healthier Scotland, and rightly says that “wellbeing cannot be created by the NHS alone”. The key areas for action include creating healthy communities, child health, mental well-being, harmful substances (such as smoking, drugs and alcohol), poverty and obesity. It says that foundations for good health are laid down at home and at school, but currently Scottish people are generally less healthy than most other people across

Europe. It suggests that modern technologies may play a part in making a difference in the future, possible using social media and artificial intelligence to support traditional approaches. It is hoped that greater wellness will result from improved education, activity levels, access to sports facilities and better alternatives to junk food. Whilst some cynics may say that this could be a way to divert attention away from financial pressures in the NHS, it is certainly true that good habits start early! Perhaps the future will see Scotland lose its reputation of heavy drinking and over-eating, and instead be renowned for its athletes and healthy living!

Due to great demand, Westerton have now opened a new 19-bed wing for residents. In addition to their existing care facilities and specialist dementia wing, this will allow the home to meet the needs of the local community for years to come.

Douglas Academy welcomed the first intake of the region’s probationer teachers at an induction event last month. In August, at the start of the new school term, 121 probationer teachers will start their teaching careers at schools across East Dunbartonshire. Education Vice Convener, Councillor Graeme McGinnigle, said: “Our region has some of the highest performing and achieving schools in the country and we’re proud of them and the people who work and learn in them. “It is great for us to welcome the probationer teachers who have chosen to start their journey with us. “We wish them a successful and rewarding probationary year.”

BEARSDEN NURSERY REACH FINAL A local nursery is celebrating after becoming a finalist for several awards. Bearsden South Church Nursery is the only UK nursery to be on the short list for three National Day Nurseries Association’s accolades, for Nursery of the Year, Healthy Nursery of the Year and Manager of the Year.

NDNA Chief Executive Purnima Tanuku OBE said: “This is a fantastic achievement for Bearsden South Church Nursery.”

The nursery, based at Bearsden Cross Church, is now awaiting news of whether they have won the awards.

The National Day Nurseries Association Nursery Awards are the only early years awards voted for by parents and also judged on excellence. A rigorous shortlisting process involves visits and interviews.

Parents wrote praising testimonies to help the nursery become a finalist in the 15th annual awards.

The winners will be announced on June 22 (after we go to press) at a special awards ceremony in Coventry.

Nursery Manager Lynsey Beaton said: “We’re delighted to be shortlisted and we feel extremely proud that the parents have supported us with valuable votes.”

Legal Matters with Gill Bowman BA LLB

This month: CONTEMPT OF COURT Contempt of court is the term used for an interference with the administration of justice. It can take many forms and under the Contempt of Court Act 1981 is punishable by a maximum sentence of three months’ imprisonment, a fine or possibly both.

Copper & Cole Salon is a premium fashion forward hair and beauty salon based in Milngavie, Glasgow. With focus on creative cutting and contemporary colour techniques, an appointment with us is a truly unique personal experience. To book now please call the Salon on 07565 874 976 or check out our Facebook page facebook.com/copperandcolehair 38 Stewart St | Milngavie | Glasgow | G62 6BW Instagram @copperandcole www.facebook.com/copperandcolehair www.copperandcole.com

The court process itself demands a certain level of behaviour or conduct in order to be able to function effectively. An individual cannot enter a court room and interrupt proceedings; a newspaper must be careful about publishing details that may be prejudicial to a trial, jurors must not discuss details of a case they are sitting on. A wilful and deliberate disregard for a civil court order could be considered contempt.

C‍ ה‏r s

A common example of this would be where one parent has an order from the court providing them with contact with their child and the parent with residence refuses to make the child available. Courts have historically been reluctant to impose a prison sentence for this type of contemp. However, parties are becoming increasingly proactive in pursuing contempt proceedings in family actions and the courts are showing a firmer stance against parents who are deliberately being obstructive. You should contact your solicitor for advice if you require assistance with raising or responding to contempt proceedings.

NIC’S BIG FLING FOR CHARITY A Milngavie mum set out to achieve her biggest sporting challenge yet – and raised almost £2000 for charity at the same time.

House & Garage Rubbish Removal Garden Clearance & Rubbish Removal Full & Part Clearance

Nicola Dawson, 38, decided at the start of the year that she wanted to complete the Highland Fling ultra running race on the West Highland Way. In just four months, she increased her mileage from 8 miles to 53 miles. She was also hit by an injury just 10 days before the race in April and ran with her sore and swollen ankle strapped up.

“I asked Matt Hunter of Hunter Fit in Bearsden to help with my Highland Fling goal. The training was very hard because I had to build up in a short time.

delighted to hand over a cheque for £1727.50 last month.”

She said: “It was a hard race and while running it I told my husband I never wanted to do it again. However, I have since changed my mind and my favourite part was running on the red carpet to the finish line with my two girls.”

Nicola had previously competed marathons, but a serious foot injury stopped her running. Three operations and three years later, she was able to run up to 8 miles at a time.

As added motivation, Nicola chose to raise money for Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity, formerly Yorkhill Children’s Charity. She said: “It’s such an amazing hospital and I was

She said: “I was finally getting back to running and I was inspired by the runners I’d seen running races on the West Highland Way so decided I wanted to do a long race myself.

“Another motivation was to show other mums they can do anything they want. The girls loved seeing the race and I want to be a role model to them." This month, Nicola will undertake her jog leader course. She said: “I want to be able to help other people to go running, so they can find out how great it can be.”

LITTER FILLS 20 BIG BIN BAGS

Senior Savvy with Suhail Rehman

This month: LIVE IN CARE

Milngavie in Bloom’s Clean Sweep group filled more than 20 green bags with rubbish collected from around the community at just one short session. Despite the date, May 19, coinciding with the Royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, 14 volunteers turned out on a warm and sunny morning. Seven were staff from Tesco. Staff from McDonald’s and Nuffield also cleared litter from the roadsides close to their own premises.

Rona MacLeod, who is very active with the local Clean Sweep group, said: “We would prefer it if people didn’t drop litter in the first place and they could take it home with them but we still want the local area to look better so we carry on with our regular litter sweeps. “This time at least 20 green bags were filled, leaving the streets in Milngavie a little cleaner once again. “I want to say many thanks to all the volunteers and I hope more people will turn out this month on July 4 and 21 from 10am to noon.” Another note for the diary is August 18, which is the group’s Summer Clean Up. We share a journey with many of our clients as they pass through various stages of home care. Many clients first come to us for domestic help, shopping, companionship and preparing healthy meals. As time passes our services progress to providing assistance with medications and at the latter stage as frailty progresses we help with transportation needs to medical appointments and personal care ensuring our clients can stay safely at home. For many this journey ends when they are unable to live on their own and our hourly visits are not enough. The only alternative seems to be a care home. This is often a decision taken reluctantly by families but seems the only available choice.

However there is now another option available. Live in Care is now becoming more widespread and allows people to remain at home for even longer. CareGivers live at home with clients and provide all necessary care on a one-to-one basis ensuring all personal needs are met. And since you are providing board and lodging for the Live in CareGiver the costs are often comparable to good care homes. At Home Instead we have created a Guide to Live in Care and can direct you to providers and sources of funding.

SUMMER KIDS WALK FOR WATERAID “performance” group for older children who are already excelling in the sport. This will be coached by star player Rob Harwood, who scored two goals at the Commonwealth Games to help Scotland Senior Men secure their highest ever finish. Another two Western Wildcats players also competed at the Gold Coast 2018 games in Australia. Rebecca O’Toole, from the club, said: “This year has been amazing for the club with three players at the Commonwealth Games and also in our 120th birthday year. “We think there is no better time for younger people to get involved in the sport. As well as the coaching the popular showtime gives children a chance to perform at the end of the camp week and they can win awards.” The cost per child is £164 with family discounts for two or more siblings attending. More information can be found on the Western Wildcats website or contact Rebecca or Iona at wildcatssummercamp2018@ gmail.com or 07974 120830.

QUALITY KITCHEN FACELIFTS

Pupils from Craigdhu Primary School showing off their backpacks which contained six litres of water, before walking six kilometres in aid of Walk for Water for WaterAid

Pupils at a Milngavie primary school have “Walked for Water” as part of a special awareness and fund-raising project. The Primary 7 children from Craigdhu, supported by Primary 6, took part in the Walk for Water for WaterAid on June 15. They were joined by representatives of Gavin's Mill Fairtrade Organisation, also MIlngavie. They walked six kilometres – 30 laps of the school grounds – carrying six litres of water in their backpacks, which is the same average distance that women and children in the developing world walk for water each day. They also carry, on average, six litres of water.

feels like each day for people in Africa.”

Julia Aitchison, a teacher at the school, said: “We wanted the children to discover the difference between our short walk to a tap to get drinking water compared to a walk for water in Africa. “Every day, women and girls spend 200 million hours walking to collect water for their families. That's 8.3 million days, which is more than 22,800 years. “These are stark numbers and by doing our Walk for Water we were able to replicate to the Primary 7s what that walk

Julia described the walk at the school as a “great achievement”. She added: “Each class in the school also walked with us at some part in the day to support us and every child carried a small bottle of water to highlight the focus of the walk.” All sponsorship raised by the Walk for Water is being donated to WaterAid, which is an international, non-profit organisation determined to help make clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene normal for everyone, everywhere. The school had not totalled the amount of funds raised as we went to press.

Kilmardinny House is on the shortlist for the UK's Civic Building of the Year Award 2018

The Grade A-listed building reopened last year after a £2.73m renovation and expansion

Historic Kilmardinny House has been shortlisted for a prestigious award to become the UK’s Civic Building of the Year 2018. The revamped landmark building in Bearsden is one of 19 projects UK-wide chosen by SPACES (the Society for Public Architecture, Construction, Engineering and Surveying) to be judged for the top accolade. The Grade A-listed building reopened last year after a £2.73m programme of works delivered by East Dunbartonshire Council in conjunction with the Leisure and Culture (EDLC) Trust and development partner hub West Scotland with Clark Contracts.

This summer, the judges from SPACES will visit Kilmardinny and the winner will be announced in October. It is the 16th Civic Building of the Year Awards. Joint Council Leader, Councillor Andrew Polson, said: “I’m delighted that Kilmardinny House has been shortlisted for such a prestigious award, taking its place alongside some of the most inspirational and ambitious projects across the UK. “I am also pleased to confirm that the council has committed

an additional £120,000 to further enhance landscaping at Kilmardinny.” Michael Scanlan, Director at Clark Contracts, said: “It is fantastic to be shortlisted for this prestigious award and we look forward to finding out if we have been successful in October.” Kilmardinny House is used as a base for a range of arts, cultural services and events, as well as being a popular venue for meetings, weddings and family occasions. CHARITY AIMS FOR

Can you sell space?

A cancer health charity is calling for local businesses to get behind a campaign to raise funds during a significant year. Milngavie-based Rainbow Valley was inspired by Johanna MacVicar, who passed away in 2005 following a lengthy battle with leukemia. She believed that diet, exercise and complementary therapies had a significant role in controlling her condition. This year she would have celebrated her 40th birthday and, in recognition, the charity has launched a “40 for 40” initiative. It calls for businesses to pledge money in support of a long-term goal to build a cancer health and educational centre. Lindsay MacCallum, project development manager at Rainbow Valley, said: “It’s a significant year for the charity and our aim is for 40 small businesses to donate £1,000 each.

“In the short term, this will help our charity to continue to provide a host of educational events, seminars, residential courses and small group meetings. “The long term aim is to build a dedicated centre, away from the hospital environment, where those living with, or affected by, cancer can explore the many treatments that are available in support of hospital care. “So far, 24 companies and organisations have signed up

and we have raised £6,500. The campaign runs until September and we are hoping that more businesses, especially local ones, will donate to the cause.”

Rainbow Valley provides practical tools for people with cancer so they can take a holistic approach to living with the condition. The programme is called “7 Steps to Health”.
