MIA WINS EURO TRI PLACE BETH CLAIMS

GOLD

Mia Padmanabhan, a pupil at Bearsden Academy qualified to compete in a prestigious European event

A teenage triathlete from Bearsden has triumphed in her first qualifying race to compete in a prestigious European event. Mia Padmanabhan, a fourth year pupil at Bearsden Academy, took part in the European Triathlon Union (ETU) age group qualifying race at the Eton Sprints Weekend in Berkshire, England, in May. It was only the second time that the 15-year-old, who trains with Glasgow Triathlon Club, had stepped up from youth distance racing to compete in the junior (under-20 age group) sprint distance triathlon. The sprint distance race is twice the length of a youth race with a

750m open water swim, a 20km bike ride and a 5km run. Mia was first female in her age group at the Eton Sprints in a time of 1:12:25, just a second ahead of runner up Orli Cranston. She will now race as part of Team GB in the 2020 Malmo ETU Sprint Distance Triathlon European Championships in Sweden. Mia said: “It was a good race and I enjoyed racing further than I have as a youth. I like the challenge of the longer distances. I was the first out of the water in the swim section in my age group

“I had to work hard in the run to stay ahead of others but it was an out-and-back run and when we turned I knew I had 2.5km to get to the finish line and I gave it all I had. I was very pleased to win, although it was by only one second on Orli.” Mia is looking forward to racing as part of Team GB. She said: “It will be exciting to take part in the European Champs and to race in official Team GB kit. In the future, I would like to see how far I can take triathlon although I know it is very competitive.” To find out more about Glasgow Triathlon Club see www. glasgowtriathlonclub.co.uk.

The solution to a growing problem!

In the same race, Yorkshire triathlon star Alistair Brownlee picked up his fourth European Championship title. Beth said: “That was pretty much the perfect race for me, which is something you can rarely say.”

ALL TO PLAY FOR AT CAMP A hockey camp for children of all experiences is back for the summer holidays – with the promise that it will be better than ever. The Western Wildcats Hockey Club Summer Camp, from July 29 to August 2, is offering more fun, games and skills for a wider range of kids in 2019.

Rebecca O’Toole, who is one of the camp organisers, said: “The camp week is filled with skills, drills and games, which are all related specifically to hockey.

The camp is aimed at children aged from primary one upwards and from beginner to advanced level. These sessions will be coached by the club’s talented Wildcats 1st team.

“The camps are also a great place to meet up with friends and make some new ones, too.

There will also be a performance group for older children, which will be coached by U21 Scotland players. This is for players who are already excelling in the sport.

“In the evening there will be the now-famous Wildcats BBQ, when family and friends are invited to

“And on the Friday, the children can look forward to a slightly different schedule with a big waterslide and hockey competitions throughout the day.

watch their children put on a small show that they will have been working on with their coach and group throughout the week. It has never yet disappointed!” The camps are usually very popular and the club is urging parents to sign up their kids as soon as possible. This year the registration process is electronic and therefore doing away with the need for paper. Rebecca said: “We hope the camp will be better than ever before and we look forward to another successful week coaching kids old and new.” The camps are daily from 9am to 5pm. 07977 787099 Gordon John Baillie Milngavie Manor Care Home will open its cinema to the public for people living with dementia

A new dementia-friendly cinema event has been launched in Milngavie – and adds to the offering in the local community. Milngavie Manor Care Home, on Craigton Road, will open its cinema to the public for people living with dementia every fortnight. The Dementia-Friendly Cinema Club on Tuesdays at 4pm will show films suitable for the audience. Family and carers are welcome, too. In addition, there is The Picture House, which is already organised by Alzheimer Scotland on the first Friday of each month at 2.30pm at the Milngavie United Free Church.

Some 90,000 people live with dementia in Scotland, yet many are missing out on social opportunities. Research conducted by the Alzheimer Scotland has revealed that more than three-quarters of people with dementia state that the main reason they stop socialising is due to a lack of confidence. The cinema screenings are a way of helping people to come together to do something enjoyable in a setting that feels friendly and inclusive. The films

NEW GIFT CARDS FOR TOWN A agship project to introduce an economy boosting gift card scheme to Milngavie is calling out for businesses to sign up. Milngavie BID hopes that as many local and national businesses in the town will be keen to be part of The Milngavie Gift Card initiative. Tony L’Anson, from the BID, said: “The gift card scheme is a method for local people to support the economy as well as businesses in Milngavie. “The way it works is that people buy a gift card for a range of monetary values. They give the gift card to a friend or relative, for a birthday, Christmas, a wedding present or just as a thank you for something. The recipient can then use it to buy products and services from Milngavie businesses. “This means that money stays in the local economy and is of benefit to residents and businesses alike.â€?

Susan from Reids of Milngavie

Now Milngavie BID is encouraging as many levy payers as possible to participate in the project. There is no cost to a business to sign up because expenses are covered by the Milngavie BID as part of their levy fee. To participate, a business needs to be able to accept card payments from a VISA machine. The next step takes place early this month when a 10-minute visit from the card partner, Miconex, will allow

Kayleigh, Manager of TOFS

business VISA machines to be set up to accept the gift cards. Tony said: “The gift card schemes have been introduced to towns and cities nationwide with great success. For example, Glasgow already has gift cards in place. “The more local businesses that sign up to the Milngavie Gift Card scheme the better it will be for customers and the local economy. To find out more contact www.milngaviebid.com.

The West Highland Way is the focus of a family’s charity walk in memory of a much loved husband and dad. Karen Corrie and her children, Calum, 18, James, 15, and nineyear-old Euan, plan to start the 96mile trail in Milngavie this month. They hope to finish the walk in Fort William on July 28, which will be the first anniversary of the death of Douglas Corrie, who lost his battle to Motor Neurone Disease. The handyman passed away aged 57. Karen said: “It has been devastating to lose my husband, my soul mate, and for my sons to lose their dad to such a cruel disease as MND. “He had promised our sons that he would walk the West Highland Way with them when they were all old enough. Then, when he

Mortgage Matters:

Could You Save Money Each Month By Re-mortgaging? Reducing your bills by hundreds or even thousands of pounds each year seems like a pretty smart idea to me. If you currently have a mortgage, you may be paying out more each month than you need to. When should you apply for a re-mortgage? Many people tend to think that they need to wait until their current deal ends before they can apply to remortgage, but this is not the case. You don’t need to wait until your existing loan ends before making a new application, as lenders will allow you to lock in a new deal up to 6 months before your current fixed term ends.

CALL OUT FOR CAR BOOT BOOST to UK charities, such as Cancer Research. “We have been able to raise so much money over the years and that is a great thing. Now I am keen to see the car boot sale attract even more sellers so that we can continue to raise funds for good causes.” If you have thinking of having a clear out, sell your unwanted items at the Milngavie Car Boot Sale

The organiser of a car boot sale wants to raise even more money for charity by encouraging people to book a car or van space. Ralph Halley, who launched the Milngavie Car Boot Sale almost 25 years ago has been delighted to be able to support many charities and good causes both locally and nationwide over the decades. All money taken from car and van bookings at the Sunday morning sale, now located at Tesco Milngavie car park, is donated to charity. Most recently, Ralph handed a cheque for £2000 to the

Milngavie and Bearsden Men’s Shed and another £1000 is to be presented to a children’s charity supported by Tesco. Ralph said: “I set up the car boot sale after my wife died from bowel cancer in 1995. She had been ill for three years. I decided I wanted to be able to support a range of charities and the aim of the car boot sale was to donate all money raised to local good causes and charities and also

A pitch for a car or light van at the sale, which takes place every Sunday from 7am to noon, costs £10. A maximum of 40 vehicles can be accommodated. Ralph says: “People can sell all sorts of things from the back of their vehicle, such as plants, unwanted household items, clothing, antiques, jewellery etc. It would be great to see more sellers and buyers at the car boot sales.” Simply turn up – the earlier the better –to secure a spot. Also see “Milngavie Car Boot Sale” on Facebook.

What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn

This month: MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS

If you are self-employed or run your own small business it can be a challenge to keep up with all the latest digital technology. This month, Business Gateway East Dunbartonshire is running a series of local and free events that could offer you a helping hand. On July 23, a session entitled Social Media - What you need to Know for Business will reveal the useful and effective tools for driving engagement and sales. The event is at Kilmardinny House Art Centre in Bearsden from 5pm to 8pm. On July 30, from 9.30am to 12.30pm, also at Kilmardinny House, there is a workshop, Smart I.T. Solutions for your Business. This useful session aims to give you the knowledge to recognise where

information technology can help you operate more effectively. A little further afield but well worth the trip to McGregor House, Donaldson Crescent in Kirkintilloch, is a workshop that will show you the art of Creating Killer Graphics in Canva 2.0. This session takes place on July 10 from 5pm to 8pm. You’ll learn how to make stunning graphic images with the free online tool for use in presentations and email newsletters, on a website, blog or social media channels. JANIS BLAZES NEW TRAILS Janis Mcarthur founder of Wild Stag Trail Adventures with one of her Jack Russell dogs

She believes that there is a growing demand for guided trail running. She said: “I did some market research and discovered that most folk prefer to have someone guide them when running in new places. Guided runs encourage people to go to new places, run more hills and also allow people to make new friends.” Wild Stag runs average about 10km in distance and the pace is described as “social”.

An enthusiastic trail runner has launched a new series of guided outings for people of all experiences and fitness levels. Janis Mcarthur launched Wild Stag Trail Adventures earlier this year with regular runs in the Bearsden and Milngavie area. She also guides runs to popular local hills and viewpoints.

Really there’s so much going on that it is impossible to pick, just a quick glance at our advertisers on these pages will give you some great ideas about how to entertain yourself and the kids in the long summer holidays & here are a few other thoughts. Culture: The Botanic Gardens Glasgow host a Shakespeare season called Bard in the Botanics. As You Like It, Shakespeare’s most romantic comedy makes a welcome return. Henry V, a brand new production of Shakespeare’s brilliant meditation on war, and leadership, Hamlet, Shakespeare's most human and heartfelt tragedy and Richard III a new production of the tale of Shakespeare’s gloriously terrifying malcontent all feature too.

Music: Why not book your tickets for this year's 25th anniversary of Millport Country Music Festival running from 30th Aug to 1st Sep with four live stages and fifty artists including Sydney Devine.

Outdoor bathing in Scotland! Yes if you take a dip in the salt waters of the Gourock Outdoor Pool. There’s a kids’ pool, diving boards and the water is always heated to a comfortable 29˚C. Tradition: Head to Loch Lomond Highland Games, Luss or Rosneath Highland Gathering this month for pipers, sports and dance. Let the children pick somewhere on the map (say within 3040 miles) like Briarlands farm offering a fun family day out for all the family in the fresh air,

ENJOY HISTORY NEW FUNDING FROM THIRD BIRTHDAY AND BIRDS Members of Bearsden & Milngavie Ramblers can look forward to a trip to an historic castle this month. As well as the busy programme of walks, the group organises regular social visits and on July 15 they are heading to Doune Castle. The self-guided tour will take in the Historic Scotland attraction before a rangerled outing to a hide to spot beautiful Argaty red kites. The cost of the outing depends on whether you have Historic Scotland membership. If not, it’s £7.20 for concession and £9 full price. The cost for the red kites session is £5 conc/£6 full. See www.bearsdenand milngavieramblers.org.uk for booking information.

Local children are now eligible for childcare funding from the day after their third birthday, rather than the following school term. The East Dunbartonshire Council funding is available from next month (August) and for children attending EDC Early Learning and Childcare Centres and approved, privately run childcare providers. Parents who have already applied for funded childcare during the academic year 2019/2020 will receive letters advising them of the changes. Parents of children turning three between March 1 and June 26, 2020, are now entitled to funded childcare during the 2019/2020 academic year. Applications must be received by August 30, 2019, and parents will be notified of

allocated places by September 30. Councillor Jim Goodall, the Convener of Education, said: “The council is working towards delivering 1140 hours funded Early Learning and Childcare by 2020 and in order to achieve this we have been introducing additional provision and extended hours in many of our centres. “I’m sure parents of young children in East Dunbartonshire will welcome the news that funded childcare will now be available from the day after a child’s third birthday.” To find out more and to apply see www.eastdunbarton.gov.uk

COMMUNICATION STRATEGIES FOR PEOPLE LIVING WITH DEMENTIA

Communication Is vital to our well-being. People living with Dementia slowly may lose their language skills and their ensuing quality of life. As family and as friends, understand how you can communicate better with your loved ones. • Realise your Challenge: Be prepared, your loved one will get worse over time and communication will become more difficult. • Be Patient: Communication is effectively one of the greatest challenges seniors with dementia face – tolerate delays compassionately. • Offer Reassurance: Listen attentively and empathise even if they are delusional, confused, hesitating or angry. • Minimize background noise: With dementia, this can be disturbing and confusing.

WEEDS WORKSHOP FOR KIDS

• Avoid arguing: Use simple sentences, clear warm tones, do not contradict and do not speak to them as you would to a child. • Use Nonverbal Cues: Gestures, touch and facial expressions can assist communication. • Keep it Simple: Two or three threads of conversation may be a lot to handle. • Be Sensitive: Don’t talk about them as if they are not there. • Take a break: Dealing with Dementia can be challenging, frustrating and lonely. Seek advice and support – this will only help you and your loved one.

Brought to you by Home Instead Senior Care 0141 249 0574

Younger children are invited to a series of Wonderful Weeds workshops this month. The Little Seedlings Club sessions take place on Sunday 7th July at 10am, 11.15am, 1pm and 2.45pm at Dobbies Garden Centre, Milngavie. The workshops are free to attend but children must be accompanied by an adult. Kids will find out facts about weeds during the 60-minute sessions. They will also have the chance to sow a wildflower seed, which they can take home with them. Advanced booking is essential for this club that runs on the first Sunday of every month.

A Milngavie teenager ran an impressive winning race in his first 10k. Euan Lamond, who had just turned 15, took part in the Mull of Kintyre (MOKRUN) 10k and finished in a time of 41 minutes and three seconds. He was the first under-18 runner to cross the line and 15th overall. Euan’s mum, Lesley, was taking part in the same 10k in Campbeltown and came home 20th in her female veteran age group in a time of 59:08. She said: “We hoped Euan would do well as he’s always been a good runner but we didn’t expect too much because he had never run a 10k before.

Euan Lamond, 15, from Milngavie won the U-18s MOKRUN in his first 10k

Like a typical teenager, he had done no training! “On the day we could tell he was quite nervous about the race. He always puts pressure on himself to do well so we were thrilled about his time and that he had placed so high. The trophy for top junior male was a nice bonus.” The mum and son were part of a large group of Milngavie friends who attend the MOKRUN each year. Some 22 local children took part in races from 500 metres to 2km while the adults ran in the 10k and half marathon events.

Bearsden Young Fiddlers are celebrating their 20th Anniversary and are looking to hear from potential new members

A local children’s orchestra hopes to attract new members as it celebrates a special milestone anniversary this year. Bearsden Young Fiddlers (BYF) was formed 20 years ago by the conductor and local violin teacher Angela Franchi. BYF is the junior orchestra of Bearsden Fiddlers and rehearses in Cairns Church in Milngavie on Sunday afternoons. There is an annual concert in November. Angela has run the group with secretary Barbara MacLeod since it was founded in 1999. Angela said: “I couldn’t have achieved 20 years of BYF without Barbara. Her commitment and support have been unswerving.”

orchestra is keen to hear from potential new members.

BYF play Scottish music and their membership comprises violin, guitar and accordion players. The age range is 10 to 18 and the young people should have achieved Grade 2 standard or above.

As well as the attraction of playing as part of an up-beat orchestra, members will enjoy making new friends from local primary and secondary schools. BYF also has an important charity focus. The group has previously raised money for Glasgow City Mission Winter Shelter, the Beatson and Childline.

The orchestra has two leaders, Melissa Allan and Eilidh Hughes, while Adrian Finnerty, a renowned local pianist and musician, is the accompanist.

Angela said: “Our players and their parents have given BYF so much loyalty and support over the years and we look forward to continuing this into the future.”

With a new term of orchestra sessions starting next month – and running to November – the

If your child would like to join BYF contact Barbara on 0141 569 7356 or Angela on 07505 451 922.

Children and adults are invited to a “Sew Together” workshop this month. Participants at the session on July 2 at Mugdock Country Park will learn how to hand sew a felt brooch or keyring in a range of different designs. All materials for the workshop are included and the minimum age is seven. Children must be accompanied by an adult. The cost is £9 for an adult and a child or £12.50 for an adult and two children. Sessions are 10am to 11:30am, noon to 1:30pm and 2pm to 3:30pm. Booking is essential. Tel: 07432 691914 or email: lucy@lucyjacksondesigns.co.uk

LET’S LISTEN TO MORE JAZZ A Bearsden man is keen to hear from people who would like to join a new jazz appreciation group as part of the local U3A network. David Stott is setting up the Bearsden & Milngavie Jazz Appreciation Group as part of the thriving B&M University of the Third Age (U3A) branch.

Numbers for the Jazz Appreciation Group will be restricted to 10 on a firstcome- first-served basis due to constraints of space.

U3A is a UK movement of retired and semi-retired people who come together to continue their educational, social and creative interests in a friendly and informal environment. Members do not need to have been university educated.

David said: “My wife and I both love the U3A because we enjoy learning about new subjects. I am already a member of the Science and Information Technology subgroups.

David said: “The idea for the jazz group is to meet in people’s houses – we will take it in turns – and to listen to a selection of jazz. For example, the likes of Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, John Coltrane and Duke Ellington (pictured).

JESS INVENTS A WINNER awards ceremony took place at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow last month. Jess was thrilled to be selected as one of only two winners in her year group. She said: “I was really surprised to be a winner but I was also very pleased. “I would like to be an engineer when I leave school.” Proud mum Debs revealed that her daughter enjoys being creative. She said: “Jess is artistic and inventive by nature. 11-year-old Jess O'Toole was one of two winners in her year group at a recent nationwide engineering competition

A Bearsden Primary School pupil has triumphed with her creative invention in a nationwide engineering competition. Eleven-year-old Jess O’Toole entered the Scottish Engineering Leaders Awards for pupils from P1 to S3. Almost 17,500 children from 248 schools took part in the contest to show how they would “make a difference” if they were an engineer.

Jess came up with the concept of a magnetic stair lift to allow people in wheelchairs to ascend stairs with greater ease and for better accessibility.

TRANSFORMATIONS

“Her invention for the competition, a magnetic stair lift, was entirely her own and it was a lovely surprise that her design impressed the judges.” One of the major aims of the Scottish Engineering Leaders Awards is to showcase the options of engineering career paths for young people and to allow them to meet engineers. Debs said: “Jess was certainly inspired by the idea of a future in engineering and I think she also found it inspiring to see all the other inventions on display, too. It showed that there are many different options for careers if you enjoy art and design.”
