neW ‘spirit’ at games A new role has been announced for TV soap star celebrity Chris Chittell at this summer’s Bearsden and Milngavie Highland Games. The popular family event, which this year launches Milngavie Week, has created Chittell as “High Protector of the Spirit of the Games”. The Emmerdale actor, who has been chieftan of the Games previously, has agreed to the annual ambassadorship with the aim of promoting the Highland Games to more people throughout the UK.

TV soap star celebrity Chris Chittel is the new High Protector of the Spirit of the Games for this year's Milngavie Highland Games, which kicks-off this month's Milngavie Week. Chris is pictured trying out a couple of events from last year's games

Alan also believes the Games on Saturday June 10 at the West of Scotland FC, Glasgow Road, Milngavie, will be one of the biggest and most exciting yet.

He said: “We’ve all the Chittell, who plays Eric Pollard in traditional events that everyone the soap, has the task of finding has come to know and love, such as wrestling, heavy events, a new chieftan although the the Haggis Hurling World name has yet to be announced. Championship, tug o’ war, pipe Organiser Alan Oliver said: “We bands, and Scottish dancing. don’t know the exact details yet but Chris has confi rmed that at “The Jellympic Games, the least one major Emmerdale cast Great Highland Bake Off, Water member will be our Chieftain in Wars, fairground rides, the 2017.” 10k run and many other family

Hoover of carpets, dusting, bed making and changing bed linen and emptying of bins Laundry: Washing and drying launtry items including personal items and bed linen in client’s own machine or if not available, at a laundrette Befriending: A walk round the block, a chat, out for coffee and companionship

attractions are also back by popular demand. There will also be all the usual food and drink stalls.” New for this year is a covered Family Football Fan Zone, which will be open after the traditional end of the Games at 5pm. The area will have a big screen showing the FIFA World Cup Qualifier Scotland versus England match as well as an area for kids to play. Alan said: “By coincidence a popular football match takes

place on the same day as the Highland Games and we thought it would be a great idea to let people stay on to watch the match together.” The Highland Games is free to enter and it is organised by volunteers. Donations on the day are welcomed and profits are given to the charity partner Funding Neuro. www.bearsdenmilngavie highlandgames.com and Facebook.

If you are wondering what to do with the kids over the summer holidays, how about helping them to join a fun reading challenge? The annual Tesco Bank Summer Reading Challenge 2017 takes place from June 24, just as the schools break up in Scotland, to August 19. This year the theme is Animal Agents, with a collection of more than 70 reads for children aged four to 11. Many books in the collection are new titles that will be published this summer. There are two lists, one for younger kids and another for older children, and they include

fiction, fact, puzzles, poetry, picture and graphic books. In Scotland, the Summer Reading Challenge is a partnership between The Reading Agency and Scottish Libraries. This year, the UK’s best-selling children’s illustrator Tony Ross will be helping to inspire kids to read more. Children can sign up to the challenge to read at least six library books over the school holidays and collect incentives along the way.

They can use the Summer Reading Challenge website to keep track of the books they have read, write book reviews, enter competitions, chat to other readers and much more. A spokesperson said: “The Summer Reading Challenge is a great way to keep children busy in the summer holidays and this year they can expect some peculiar things to be happening in EDLC libraries thanks to the help of the Animal Agents and their friends.” Look out for more information at your local library in Bearsden or Milngavie as the summer holidays approach. The UK's largest dry-slope freeski and snowboard competition takes place at Bearsden Ski and Board Club this month. Go Big or Go Home will be held on Saturday June 24, from 9pm to 7.30pm and is expected to attract more than 80 entrants. The event challenges skiers and snowboarders of all abilities to compete to “go bigger and better”, whether it is bigger jumps, bigger tricks or bigger spins. There are three age groups, 12 and under, 13 to 16 and 17 and over, as well as both male and female categories. Prizes are awarded for first, second and third places. Matt McCormick, from the club, says: “This event keeps on

merchandise before buying. Products range from snowboards to apparel.

“The contest attracts some of the best dry slope skiers and snowboarders in the country, who will push themselves to the limit to secure a top spot. There will be a chance to see huge tricks, dramatic bails and some crowd-pleasing backflips.

Entry is £5 for members of Bearsden Ski Club and £20 for non-members. This includes rental equipment if required and a full day’s skiing/snowboarding. The event is free for spectators.

“Yet the competition is also for people who are new to the sport. We want to see everyone taking part. The main aim of the contest is to welcome and encourage skiers and snowboarders into a fun competition environment.”

See Bearsden Ski Club on Facebook for further details.

There will also be volunteers to create the festival area before the weekend and dismantle it afterwards.

Organisers of MugStock, the popular local festival, rely on a large and trusted group of volunteers and are keen to hear from people over 18 who can help.

The popular local festival of music, craft and merriment, MugStock, is on the look out for a range of enthusiastic volunteers. The not-for-profi t organisation relies on a large and trusted group of volunteers to make it a success and this year is no different. Organisers are keen to hear from people aged over 18 who can help on the weekend of the festival, from Friday July 28 to Monday July 31, as well as a “bit before and a bit after”.

MugStock founder Alan Govan says: “MugStock is powered by the love and hard work of our dream team of volunteers. “It would not happen, nor be such a success, without them and we really hope we can enlist as many great volunteers as in previous years.”

Alan says: “Another important area is SmugStock, which is where visitors can enjoy being pampered and have waiter bar service. In previous years we’ve had massage and manicures from medieval maidens and merry men. What could make it even better this year?” There are various packages of incentives for people who volunteer, such as festival tickets, meals and the chance to be part of a friendly team of people working together.

“Almost every day we read in the newspaper and on-line about advances in knowledge, science and technology and our group offers a monthly talk and then some lively discussion on a chosen topic. We also organise occasional visits to places of scientifi c interest.

The monthly science talks, organised by Bearsden and Milngavie U3A, are aimed at members who want to know more about a wide range of current scientific topics.

At the inaugural meeting, Billy gave a talk on “Medicines from Plants”. Since then, other topics have included “Comets”, “Measurement” and “Land Features from the Ice Age”.

The group coordinator is Billy Martin, a retired professor of pharmacology, and the monthly meet-ups are usually led by a U3A member on a specialist topic.

On June 13, the talk will be by Emeritus Professor David Watt, a B&M U3A member, on “Computer Chess: a Step Towards Artifi cial Intelligence?”.

This summer’s Milngavie Week has been extended by a day to accommodate a “bigger and better” programme of fun and activities. The festival returned to the community to great acclaim last summer. Now organisers have revealed there will be eight days instead of seven days with the festival – and more than 30 events – running from June 10 to 18. Most of the events from last year will be back, including the classic car show, dog show,

children’s cat show, car treasure hunt, Garden in a Container Competition, duck races, quiz, raffle, and craft drop-ins. As well as all this there will be a host of new events, organised by local groups and individuals, such as guided walks, readings by local writers, Hickory Golf Competition, bee trail for kids, an art exhibition, a Stop Motion Film Competition and children’s gardening. On Sunday June 18, there will be a new Fun Day. Callum Christie, chair of Milngavie Community Development Trust, the host of Milngavie Week, says: “We are creating an extra day of entertainment in Lennox Park. Families will enjoy all the many

displays, competitions and exhibitions that we are putting on.” To close Milngavie Week this year, there will be an extra day of fun events on Sunday June 18. The Lennox Park Fun Day is from 10am to 4pm and includes apple pressing, willow weaving, a skate park demonstration, a treasure hunt, face painting, outdoor fitness and a pétanque competition. Dr Bike will be at the event, too, so you can have a free MOT for your bike, plus there will be led guided bike rides on off road routes. There will be food and refreshments on the day, or you can bring a picnic. Disabled parking is by the Scout Hall.

Wilson Blakey, one of Milngavie Week’s coordinators, is also delighted that groups in the local area have come forward to link their existing events with Milngavie Week.Â

Text: 07851

The 3rd Annual Classic Car Show takes place on June 17 as part of the extended Milngavie week.

He says: “Many events have been timed to tie in with Milngavie Week, such as the Flower Festival, a classical guitar concert, a debating competition and the Football Festival organised by Milngavie FC. With so much happening we’ve made it an eight-day festival.

Organised by Milngavie Town Centre BID, the free community event, offers visitors the chance to get a close look at more than 80 classic, vintage and sports cars.

Another co-ordinator, Ruth Blakey, says: “We are so pleased that we will be able to fulfill our ambition to make this year bigger than before.

Visitors will also have the chance to chat to the exhibitors about the cars and their passion for the classics.

See www.milngaviedt.co.uk and Milngavie Week on Facebook.

You can expect to see names such as Pontiac, Austin, MGT, Mustang, Porsche and Ferrari.

As well as the cars, other attractions on the day include face painting and balloon twisting for

the kids, local trader stalls, safety demonstrations by the British Transport Police and free bike marking by local police officers.

niCola is fling Winner A Bearsden runner was the first woman to finish the gruelling 53-mile Highland Fling race 2017, which follows the West Highland Way. Nicola Adams-Hendry (pictured), 40, who trains with local club Garscube Harriers, crossed the line at Tyndrum in 8 hours 16 minutes and seven seconds. It was her personal best time for the race, which she has completed four times, and this year she was 10th overall. She was followed by Morgan Windram (Fife AC) in 8:37:59 and Rachel Newstead (Carnethy) in 8:55:35. Nicola said: “I wasn’t even sure I would make it to the start line this year due to a niggling Achilles injury but I did feel

be the winner in the women’s race felt like pure magic.” In the men’s race, winner Rob Sinclair smashed the course record by 10 minutes to come home in 6:41:15. He was also 36 minutes faster than his nearest rival. Rob, of Insch Trail Running Club, Aberdeenshire, was followed by Andrew Tuckey (Bridgend AC) in second place in 7:17:06, then Michael Jones (Apex Running) in 7:29:35.

June 2017 | What's Up Doc?

Disco raises ÂŁ500 for charity

What's Up Doc?

A fancy dress disco, themed around the Eighties and Nineties, has raised more than ÂŁ500 for a local charity.

This month: DR GOOGLE...

with Dr Nick Dunn

The fundraiser was organised by friends of Yogability, including Jane Paterson, Peter and Sharon Cawston, Isobel Lightbody and Lauren Mulheron.

“It also has a serious side because it helped to raise much-needed funds for the continued success of Yogability.

Peter is also the chair and Jane is a teacher and trustee of the charity, which provides free yoga classes for children with special needs, as well as their carers.

“We could not keep going without the help of donations and fund-raisers such as this and so myself and the other founder, Debbie MacNab, are very grateful.

The disco was held at Westerton Bowling Club in April and everyone enjoyed dancing the night away.

Yogability, based in Glasgow, is a community of carers, mainstream yogis, kids and adults with special needs, volunteers, supporters, friends and family. They also offer mainstream classes on a donation basis.

One of the Yogability founders, Helen McGinn, of Bearsden, said: “The disco was a huge success and so much fun for everyone that attended.

I know I shouldn't doctor, but..." is often what I hear prior to patients admitting they have looked online about their condition or medications. Often "Dr Google" is blamed for causing people unnecessary worry or giving misleading information about health. There may be a mixed message though, as doctors are keen for people to take responsibility for their health and "own" their conditions. Our job is to diagnose, inform and enable patients to make the decision which is right for them, where possible allowing them to weigh up their options. I like to think that the days of the

finger-wagging doctor telling the patient what they must do have moved to more "adult" conversations! The internet can be a valuable help with this, and I will often print off downloaded information sheets for patients or suggest they look at a website to help them better understand what is happening with their bodies. However, in these days of "fake news" selective use of reliable websites is key. Use www.nhsinform.scot as your first port of call and when you have real concerns remember you can discuss these with your doctor!

This month: STOP AND SEARCH

PRESSURE WASHING

Folk bands fans can look forward to three great evenings of entertainment this month. Milngavie Folk Club, based in the Fraser Centre, plays host to the wonderfully entertaining singermusician pair, Charlie Dore and Julian Littman (pictured), on June 3. Charlie’s songs are known for their bittersweet, subversive and original lyrics.

Acclaimed guitar master Martin Simpson plays on June 11 and on June 17 you can hear the Jill Jackson Band. Jill is a successful singer-song writer, producer and guitarist, originally from Paisley. Tickets are priced between £10 and £20 for different events.

The act of being stopped and searched by a police constable is a significant intrusion of anyone's personal liberty and privacy. Accordingly, a new code of conduct regulating the practice was published in January 2017. Essentially, it removes the ability for a stop and search to be carried out unless there is a statutory reason for it, even if the individual gives their consent to be searched. It also clearly sets out the guidelines for Police Scotland and makes them more accessible to the general public. They can be found online or in your local police station. Statutory powers allow a stop and

search to be carried out on a person, not already in police custody, when a constable has a reasonable suspicion they are committing, have committed or are about to commit a particular crime or are in possession of a prohibited item. The legal test, and therefore the important part, is the reasonable suspicion. The suspicion must firstly be genuine and secondly reasonable, i.e. would another reasonable person consider that there was a crime or prohibited item? In the event you are ever stopped and searched you should be provided with a receipt detailing your right to a copy of the record of the search.

Time to get in the saddle Scots of all ages and fitness levels are being encouraged to get on their bikes this month as the annual Bike Week campaign takes place.

A man can build a house but it takes a woman to make a home

Bike Week, from June 10 to 18, is the opportunity to promote cycling – and to show how cycling can easily be part of everyday life by calling for “everyday cycling for everyone”.

Wallpapering

In our area, Mugdock Country Cycles will lead group family rides and host Bike Doctor sessions in Lennox Park, Milngavie, on June 18. This is also part of the final – and extra – day of fun and entertainment as part of Milngavie Week.

Refurbishments Rendering

Mugdock Country Cycles owner, Keith McLellan, said: “The rides will be beginner friendly but will take place on tracks and some easy off-road so they are fun and inspiring. “The Bike Doctor session will allow our bike mechanic experts to do a bicycle check-up and fix on-the-spot repairs. We will

also advise on any additional work that might be needed. There will be a charge for these repairs.” This year’s Bike Week has a special focus to get people to use their bikes to cycle to work.

A Bike Week spokesperson said: “The aim of Bike Week is to demonstrate the social, health and environmental benefits of cycling. We want to get many more people cycling, whether it’s for fun, to get to work or school or to the shops.”

Bearsden and Milngavie residents can take part in Bike Whether you aim to cycle all the Week simply by pledging to ride way to work each day or a few times a week, or you use your car their bikes more. If you are a keen cyclist already you could and your bike in combination to get to work, you’ll find there are organise a led ride to encourage benefits to your fitness, as well as others to cycle as well. National Carers Week 2017 takes place from June 12th to 18th. Carers Week is an annual campaign to raise awareness of caring, highlight the challenges carers face and recognise the contribution they make to families and communities throughout the UK. Looking after each other is something that we humans are good at. It’s in our nature to care for and nurture those who need it. There are currently around 6.5 million people throughout the UK who provide unpaid care for frail, ill, or disabled family members or friends. Many of these carers may not know that they are classed as carers, perhaps thinking that they’re just being a good family

member, friend, or neighbour, when in fact they are much more than that. Carers Week aims to increase awareness of the valuable job that all carers perform each day, whilst also finding ways to make the life of a carer a little easier. When the whole community is involved, carers can feel confident that they have somewhere to turn for help and respite when they need it the most. If you are an informal carer, Carers Link, based in Milngavie, who provide carer support can be contacted on 0141 955 2131. And if you would like to find out more about part-time CareGiving with Home Instead please contact us on 0141 942 8684.

hotel’s surprise visit in London and then had a long career with the tourist board. Margaret and her husband John now live in Cornwall and Harry lives in Edinburgh.

Craig Haddow, General Manager of Boclair House Hotel with Margaret Hutchison and Harry Steven. Inset: Harry and Margaret at the top of the staircase at Buchanan Retreat circa 1947

Two special visitors were welcomed back to Boclair House Hotel in Bearsden – and revealed a fascinating story of their childhood. As children, Harry Steven and his sister Margaret Hutchison lived at Boclair when it was Buchanan Retreat. Their mum was the matron at the home, which offered a home for elderly gentlemen with the name Buchanan. Their dad worked in the office, maintaining the management side of the operation. The couple ensured the smooth running of the 14-bedroom house.

For Harry, then aged 10, and 12-year-old Margaret the grand mansion offered a home from 1947 as they grew up and attended Bearsden Academy. Margaret lived at the Buchanan Retreat for 10 years and left for a nursing career, which led her to London where she met her husband, Dr John Hutchison. Harry stayed at the Buchanan Retreat for around seven years. He left to work for Argentine Airlines

The Buchanan Retreat eventually closed due to a lack of elderly gentlemen to care for and Harry and Margaret’s parents moved to a cottage nearby. The Council acquired the property in 1960 and created the council offices that many local people will remember. With a smile Harry told current staff at Boclair, which won Boutique Hotel of the Year at the Scottish Hotel Awards, of many fond memories living there as children and how they used a huge laundry room for roller skating. The hotel was delighted to meet the pair and to show them around the now refurbished building. See www.boclairhousehotel.co.uk

Milngavie FC will be hosting a Scottish FA Community Football Day this month.

for trustees to join the executive committee. Abbeyfield House, on Grange Road, is a home-from-home for 11 residents, which provides sheltered accommodation and companionship for older people who are isolated and lonely living in their own home.

The special event takes place on June 17, from 9am to 6pm, at the West of Scotland Rugby Club.

Two home-cooked meals are served every day by housekeeping staff in the large dining room. Abbeyfield is not a care home offering nursing or personal care, however residents can have nursing and personal care brought in. As a registered charity, Abbeyfield House is run by a committee of trustees who all live locally. Abbeyfield is particularly interested in hearing from people with experience in property management to oversee the maintenance of the house and garden, as well as those with an interest in organising social activities for the elderly.

A spokesperson said: “The trustee roles are both rewarding and interesting. The most important attribute that trustees should have is an interest in elderly people and a desire to ensure they receive the highest standards of supported accommodation.” If you are interested in a volunteer trustee role contact Abbeyfi eld House chair, Paul McMahon, at pmcmahon_1@ hotmail.com to find out more or the secretary Kirsty Milne on 0141 942 2451.

Be greener on this day

15% OFF

On this day, why not try to do even just one of these things? 1

Make your morning brew with certified organic coffee or tea. The organic label means it was grown using sustainable standards.

2 Spread used coffee grounds on beds of acrid-craving plants, such as azaleas.

World Environment Day takes place this month and aims to raise awareness of how to take positive action to protect nature and our Earth. The global campaign, on June 5, is run by the United Nations Environment Programme and calls for people to be more caring by making environmentally responsible choices.

3

If you are away from your computer for more than 20 minutes, put it into sleep mode.

4

Take you own bags to the supermarket. You have to pay for plastic bags in Scotland anyway so you will be green and save money, too.

5

Take a closer look at your home recycling. Is there anything you miss out regularly or could re-use? Plastic and glass items should be a focus.

6

Save water by turning off the tap while brushing your teeth or shaving and take a shower instead of a bath.

7

Stick to the speed limit in your car. Driving over the national speed limit is both illegal and a drain on fuel.

8

Check your car tyres are pumped up to the right pressure. Driving on soft tyres uses more fuel.

9

Switch your lighting to energy efficient bulbs and install dimmer switches.

10 Use a microfibre cloth in the kitchen instead of roll after roll of kitchen paper.

Here we suggest 10 small things to do that could make a difference to your environmental impact.

If you do one of these things on World Environment Day, how about a few more over the month?

GOOD

COMPANY... At The Kitchen Depot, we have always prided ourselves in our family values, on always being prepared to do whatever it takes to ensure that our customers are treated exactly as we would like to be treated ourselves - with courtesy, consideration and professionalism.

But lest we ever become complacent, we actively encourage ongoing feedback - here's what Mr Lee Sanderson has to say:

"The most incredible thing about The Kitchen Depot has been your sky-high levels of customer service. Too often a company will promote customer service as a core value, only to reveal a hollow promise when they don't live up to it." Mr Sanderson continues: "My favourite retailer is John Lewis because I know that they will do whatever they can to put something right if it goes wrong. The Kitchen Depot has performed to the same high standard."

"To favourably compare a small family business to Britain's most respected retailer is not something that I do lightly but you are well worthy of the comparison." Well, thanks for that, Mr Sanderson - please excuse us while we blush with pride. When it comes to looking after our customers, The Kitchen Depot is never knowingly undersold.
