BeaVers Learn HoW To saVe a Life

SAFA volunteer, Annemarie Pattison gratefully accepts the donation from the Beavers after they held a sponsored silence. Annemarie then taught the beavers some basic fi rst aid skills and CPR techniques

A group of fund-raising Beavers from Bearsden have been learning how to save a life at a special “thank youâ€? ďŹ rst aid session. The boys from the 24th Glasgow (Bearsden) Field Maple Colony were rewarded with the instruction course after a fundraising event for St Andrew’s First Aid, Scotland’s only dedicated first aid charity.

OUR SERVICES

Around 20 boys, aged six to eight, held a Sponsored Silence in their local hall in November and raised more than ÂŁ350 for the charity.

Led by Beaver Scout leaders Gregor Warren and Graeme Little, the Beavers participated in the silence, with four boys managing to last the full 40 minutes. The funds will go towards helping SAFA buy equipment and to continue making a long lasting, positive difference to communities across Scotland.

As a thank you, long-time SAFA volunteer, Annemarie Pattison, visited the group in January to accept the donation and to teach the Beavers basic first aid skills. They learned about CPR, burns, cuts and how to use a defibrillator. This will help them to achieve their Beavers first aid badge.

charity is a core principle of the Scouting Family and we are proud of our boys for doing so well. I didn’t know they were capable of silence. “We were delighted to welcome Annmarie to our group and the scouts were really excited about the opportunity to learn lifesaving skills. We hope we can continue to build the relationship between the 24th Glasgow Scouts and St Andrew’s First Aid. One eight-year-old Beaver, Christopher Jardine, said: “It was really hard for me to keep quiet for the whole time but it was fun doing it all together. I also really enjoyed learning how to do CPR on the dummies. Stuart Callison, Chief Executive of St Andrew’s First Aid, said: “We very much appreciate all donations we receive and it’s fantastic to get young people on board. These funds will be used to purchase essential equipment, allowing us to continue supporting the people of Scotland and helping to save lives. The Beavers group meet at Bearsden Academy on Tuesday evenings. more for aLL aT WaYpoinT An 18-month development project in Milngavie has finally reached fruition with a range of enhanced facilities available to the community. Milngavie Youth Centre (MYC) trustees have been working hard to progress the revamp and installation project while faced with a series of planning and construction obstacles. However, MYC chairperson Gordon McCorkindale is convinced it has been worth it. He said: “It has all taken much longer than we anticipated, but Milngavie residents now have

the benefi t of new facilities, including attractive public toilets, a much-needed offi ce and meeting space for a number of local community organisations, as well as dedicated space for Milngavie in Bloom. “We are grateful, too, for the support of East Dunbartonshire Council and a number of professional and contracting organisations for their assistance.” In addition to reconfiguring and refurbishing the former youth centre toilets, a cabin building, to be called the Waypoint, has been installed to the side of the

existing centre. This will house bookable office and meeting space and will be useful for organisations that require rooms for confidential meetings with clients. Milngavie in Bloom also have a dedicated store behind the youth centre and a local and tourist information point has been created. With a formal celebratory launch planned for later in the year, the new toilets and the Waypoint will be available for use from the end of this month.

PledgeMusic provides an on-line platform where fans and artists can work together to make new records and raise money. LYLO will be offering incentives to fans, such as merchandise bundles for people to buy.

Post Era was released in January on vinyl on the Glasgow record label El Rancho. Praise has come from independent arts and entertainments magazine, The Skinny, which awarded the album a maximum rating of five stars.

Justin Allan, LYLO’s drummer, said: “PledgeMusic will hopefully be useful for us as we look for future fi nancial support.”

The reviewer wrote: “The shimmering intro track Everything’s Cool sets the tone for the album with a mournful

Are you interested in growing your own fruit and veg? If so, you should head to a Local Food Growing Strategy meeting this month. The event takes place on March 1 at the Fraser centre in Milngavie at 7pm and offers the opportunity to find out more about growing food and flowers in local allotments. The Local Food Growing Strategy (LFGS), with the support of East Dunbartonshire Council and Milngavie Community Development Trust, will reveal information about the scheme. This project is part of the council’s Community Empowerment Act commitments, while national charity Greenspace Scotland are giving on-going support. MCDT will be delivering a short talk at the meeting about the

planning efforts for a community growing scheme in Lennox Park. A Community Food Growing Space is described as “a place for intergenerational activities related to learning how to grow fruit and vegetables”. A range of people can make use of the growing areas including schools, the disabled, their carers and local residents. Callum Christie, from MCDT, said: “We would encourage interested local residents to attend the Local Good Growing Strategy meeting to fi nd out how they can get involved and what the latest news is on places for allotments. We are

keen to spread the word about developments in Lennox Park, too.” An orchard planting has already taken place at the park. In January 20 volunteers helped to put young trees in the ground. Become a mini professor A new pre-school group is hoping to encourage young children to foster a love of learning about science and related subjects. The three weekly science classes, Mini Professors, are for youngsters aged two to five and take place in Bearsden and Milngavie. Alison Tough, who runs Mini Professors Glasgow North, said: “My main aim is to encourage a love of learning and a love of science from an early age. “I want to harness children's curiosity and enthusiasm to try new things by introducing them to loads of new activities and experiments.” Each week the class covers a different science topic, including bubbles, electricity, flight, evolution, maths, dinosaurs, the brain, fossils and butterflies, to name a few. The children take part in two experiments or activities to investigate the topic. There is also singing, storytelling and a short video to

watch to reinforce the topic which has been specially made for the Mini Professors programme. Alison said: “As well as the science, our classes encourage and help to develop lots of other skills such as sharing, turn taking, social skills and language skills. It is also a great way for parents to meet and socialise.” The Mini Professor classes take place at Bearsden Guide Hall on Pendicle Road on Mondays, 1.45pm to

concerns oVer fLiGHT paTHs An East Dunbartonshire councillor has urged residents in the Bearsden South area to engage with a Glasgow Airport consultation.

Future Airspace Strategy involves the removal of groundbased navigation aids across the UK to be replaced by satellite navigation systems.

SNP Councillor Denis Johnston has stated that he believes that proposals for new flight paths have the potential to impact on the ward, including Westerton, Canniesburn and Kessington areas.

The ground navigation aid, which Glasgow Airport has been using to guide aircraft to and from the airfield since the 1980s, will be decommissioned.

Locals can attend a consultation session organised by the airport at Bearsden Community Hub, 69 Drymen Road on Friday March 16, from 10am to 7pm. Airport representatives will be available to answer queries and residents can share any concerns.

The airport has pledged to engage in a “full and open consultation” and the Bearsden Hub session is part of the process. Glasgow Airport is in the process at looking at ways to modernise the airspace infrastructure. A key element of the Civil Aviation Authority’s

At the same time the airport is also consulting residents on aircraft noise concerns. This is part of a Noise Action Plan (NAP) that is required to be updated every five years. To find out more see www. glasgowairport.com/airspace or attend the Hub session.

Cllr Johnstone urged: “It’s important that as many people in the local area as possible know about the consultation and the Bearsden Hub session.”

The consultation will close for submissions on Friday April 13.

Late News Thursday 15th The Concept of Deity in 21st Century Christianity Cairns Church 7.30 pm. A lecture given by Rev. Dr. Harriet Harris, Chaplain to Edinburgh University.

Saturday 17th

The Kilmardinny Players will be performing the play "Separate Tables" on their return to the historic Kilmardinny House in Bearsden.

The Kilmardinny Players are delighted to be performing their ďŹ rst spring production at Kilmardinny House for some three years. The amateur dramatic group will bring the play, Separate Tables, to life for audiences from March 22 to 24 at the historic Bearsden house, which reopened last year after a multi-million pound refurbishment. Paul Cockcroft, a member of the group, said: “We are delighted to be back in our original home for this spring production and we are looking forward to putting on a performance of Terence Rattigan’s acclaimed play.â€? Separate Tables is a bittersweet reflection on life, love

and loneliness and is set in a Bournemouth Hotel. The familiar faces of various veterans of the Players are joined by a few newcomers in the 13-strong cast. Paul said: “This production is really two plays in one. In the fi rst, John Malcolm, a disgraced politician, is joined by ex-wife, Anne, who shares a traumatic past. “In the second, Major Pollock has invented a fi ctional past that unravels when he is arrested for sexual offences. Sybil, inhibited daughter of the stuffy Mrs

Railton-Bell, is drawn to the Major as a kindred spirit. “Spanning both plays is Miss Cooper, the manageress and moral centre of this optimistic piece. Disappointed in love, she believes, despite all evidence to the contrary, in the possibility of life beyond the separate tables. Tickets from www. kilmardinnyplayers.org/ separatetables.php or call: 0781 332 6318. All performances start at 7.30pm. Present Laughter, the first official performance for the Players back at Kilmardinny House last November, was deemed a great success by the actors and audiences.

March 2018 | What's Up Doc?

Join in mini arts festival A three-day festival will be held this month to celebrate the artistic achievements of people with autism, learning disability and mental health issues and the organisations that support them.

What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn

This month: Holiday Souvenirs... Having survived the winter, many of you will be looking ahead to your summer holidays and possibly booking trips to exotic places such as Blackpool or Devon! The more adventurous may even be going abroad!

East Dunbartonshire Health and Social Care Partnership’s (HSCP) Local Area Co-ordinators service is organising the festival of arts to tie in with the run-up to Autism Awareness Week 2018. Most people are aware of the benefits of taking part in artistic and musical activity as part of a healthy lifestyle and the event from March 22 to 24, is an opportunity to celebrate the work of local artists, performers and musicians. The launch is on Thursday 22nd from 5pm to 7:30pm at Lillie Art Gallery, Milngavie and includes an exhibition and performances.

On Friday, from 10am to 7:30pm there is a day of creative activity, concerts, performances and an exhibition at Kirkintilloch Town Hall. On Saturday, from 10am to 5pm, also at the town hall, there will be more performances by local groups and artists. In addition, the acclaimed Sounds of the Gallery Band will be performing at two gigs during the festival. To register interest, contact George or Ashleigh on 0141 578 2142 or email george.burt@ eastdunbarton.gov.uk or ashleigh. grant-ng@eastdunbarton.gov.uk.

It’s always nice to bring back some souvenirs, but there are some which are best avoided. I am thinking about dangerous infections such as typhoid, yellow fever, hepatitis or even tuberculosis, which can be a risk in certain parts of the world. The best way to avoid these things is first to make sure your normal vaccinations are up to date. You can check this with your Practice Nurse.

These would include your diphtheria, tetanus, polio, typhoid. Depending on where you are travelling you may require to pay for specific jabs such as yellow fever, TB, rabies, meningitis or encephalitis. Your Practice may provide a travel service or you could attend a travel clinic who can advise what you need depending on where and when you are travelling, the type of holiday and your age and general state of health. It is important to plan well ahead, and allow at least 8 weeks to get things organised. That way you can hopefully bring back the nice souvenirs, and avoid the nasty ones!

One of Britain’s most celebrated classical music groups has included Milngavie Music Club’s next concert as part of its farewell tour. After 35 years at the forefront of British chamber music, the Schubert Ensemble of London has decided this will be their last season. The Milngavie concert on Friday March 9 will stir happy memories of their previous much-praised visit more than 10 years ago. The ensemble can look back on many memorable highlights, including touring major venues in cities such as Tokyo, New York, Los Angeles and Amsterdam, as well as visits to countries such as Nicaragua, Guatemala, Malaysia, Malta and Lebanon. They have recorded more than 25 CDs and In 1998 their

contribution to music in the UK was recognised with an award by the Royal Philharmonic Society. The group’s Milngavie programme, at Cairns Church, features two great piano quartets by Mozart and Fauré and a haunting new piece by one of Britain’s most talented young composers, Charlotte Bray, which was inspired by the frozen landscape of Greenland.

Making a sparkling point of difference at Bearsden and Milngavie‌ It has now been eighteen months since Wells & Co. (fine jewellers) Ltd. opened the company’s second store at New Kirk Rd. Bearsden and three months since their third at Station Rd. Milngavie, and owners, Sheila and Bruce Wells are currently busy assembling this year’s captivating collections of both fashionable and precious jewellery, due to be launched shortly. “Having now had the experience of trading in Bearsden and Milngavie â€?Sheila says, â€?We have come to understand that there has been a strong desire for people to be able to purchase fine, appealing jewellery at affordable prices. Sure, there are still these “special purchaseâ€?events in peoples’ lives which demand a greater degree of planning and obviously we are here to assist with these, but from an everyday perspective, we are finding that more and more customers are seeking more distinctive, unusual ranges of jewellery which are both eye-catching and very importantly, at the right price.â€? Husband, Bruce agrees and explains, â€?It is very important to us that we keep abreast of current trends and fashions in the jewellery trade. Gone are the days of your local jeweller

selling antique style silverware and “traditional ranges of jewellery. One only has to look at how some of the long-established jewellers in the city centre have had to modernise their layouts to suit the times. We feel that we have created shops with a certain, contemporary ambience, whilst retaining the personal service appeal that most people would expect from a professional jewellery company. Sheila adds, As well as product, we have a terrific service department in operation. Many of our customers have been able to have older pieces re-modelled or renovated, watches restored or serviced and their jewellery properly cleaned and re-finished. With collections including Ti Sento, Guess, Nomination, Hot Diamonds, Emozioni, Sif Jakobs, Fiorelli, Les Georgettes and Tianguis Jackson, as well as Wells’ own diamond set collections, Wells & Co.(fine jewellers) Ltd.is set to cater for all occasions and will offer you a suitable, fashionable alternative for your jewellery requirements. They will also undertake special commissions, in order to help you create your own particular unique piece of jewellery.

A godparent will usually have an active role in the child’s life and are specifically chosen to take over the care of a child in the event of the parent’s death; to become their guardian. In the event you wish for this role to be taken literally then it is important that this appointment is formalised in writing. This can be done by detailing your wishes in your will or, alternatively, by having a specific document drafted under S.7 of the Children (Scotland) Act 1995.

An appointment of a guardian will come into effect in the event of the parent’s death and will continue until the child reaches 18. Although, between 16 and 18 the role is limited to providing guidance. A guardian is essentially a parental substitute and will have full parental rights and responsibilities in relation to the child. There should, therefore, be serious consideration given as to who should take on that role. The role of guardian can be revoked by you if you wish and, again, this should be done in writing. A solicitor will be able to assist by drafting the necessary documents.

COMPETITION FOR ARTY KIDS Arty kids might like to enter a competition being run by Mugdock Makkers Art and Craft Gallery. The three winning artworks will be displayed in the gallery at Mugdock Country Park in the Easter Holidays. Entries are accepted until March 9. I liked to see swans nesting on an island in the pond but it became obvious the island was deteriorating and two years ago its moorings gave way. The island was left to drift around the pond.” Fiona contacted Milngavie Community Development Trust to see if anything could be done. She said: “The swans were not using the island and had been

We had a good response from our column last month on the loneliness epidemic that is spreading throughout our elderly communities. And to follow on I thought this would be a good opportunity to remind everyone of National Conversation Week 2018 that falls on 5th – 11th March. This Week is all about the simple yet rewarding and pleasurable pastime of simply talking to each other. We’re very much a society that’s ‘always on’ and unfortunately the art of human conversation is getting drowned in

a sea of emojis, a flurry of snapchat messages (ask any teenager) and dwindling attention spans. We’re all guilty of hiding behind a screen and firing off a quick text to friends and family rather than taking the time to actually speak with someone. Whilst this is now commonly accepted it does however exclude many members of our elderly community who are not digitally connected. While there’s a place for digital communication, the benefit of face-to-face conversation shouldn’t be lost altogether. So, this month, we’re encouraging our community to put the smartphone aside and opt for human interaction. If you have an elderly friend or neighbour you haven’t contacted in a while call them or pop in to see them – trust me they will appreciate it more than anyone!

The Milngavie and Bearsden branch of The Men’s Shed has secured the lease of The Pagoda at King George V Park as their base. The building has been unused for 25 years and now requires upgrading work. Hamish Livingstone, secretary of Milngavie and Bearsden Men’s Shed, said: “We plan to turn the Pagoda into the ‘shed’ for our group. It will form a workshop and general purpose recreation space where members can meet and complete personal projects and also projects for the benefi ts of the community.

The Arts Society of Bearsden and Milngavie enjoyed a special 50th Anniversary celebration. Last month’s even included the iconic movie, Casablanca, and a lecture on how the film was made. Catriona Gleave is the chair of the historic arts society. She said: “The fi lm was fi tting because although it was made so long ago – in the early 1940s – it still pulls the heart strings. “We learned from the talk how cinematography played a large part in the Second World War to misinform the enemy. “We all very much enjoyed the celebratory day and had a packed lunch complete with popcorn."

A popular local running event, the Milngavie Trail Race, is set to expand its appeal with a new off-road course just for teenagers. As entries opened for the trail event on June 3, 2018, the organiser, Graeme Reid, announced the new race of 3.2 miles for runners aged 13 to 16. He said: “The Milngavie Trail Race has proved very popular since I launched it four years ago and I thought it would be great to add a race for younger runners. We will cap numbers for this race at around

Both courses will start at the HQ of the 20th Glasgow (1st Milngavie) Scout Group in Lennox Park in Milngavie. The 8.5-mile route includes 500ft of ascent and heads along the West Highland Way and through Mugdock Country Park. It is an official Scottish Athletics race. The teenager course will be challenging and includes a mixture of hard trails, single track and unmade ground. Both routes will be waymarked and marshaled.

Four riders from Glasgow Mountain Bike Club (GMBC) won podium positions in the famously tough 24-hour Strathpuffer race in January. In total 11 riders from GMBC competed in the “Puffer”, which takes place on forest trails near the town of Strathpeffer in Ross & Cromarty.

The race challenges cyclists to complete non-stop laps of a tough mountain biking course. This year, snow and temperatures as low as -12C made it even more diffi cult. Yet the GMBC riders managed to complete a total of 123 laps of the 11km course with Campbell Davidson and Steven Owens

Ian Godber and Thomas Wylie were 10th in the men’s pairs with 21 laps; Gary Clark and Angus Macsween were 40th in the same category with 14 laps and Simon Haslam was the sixth solo male on a singlespeed bike having ridden 10 laps.

Campbell pointed out that the results would not be possible without great support. He said: “I want to give a huge thanks to my wife Jacqui Davidson and friend Neil McNamara, who supported all the competitors in our pit area. None of us could have achieved the results we did without the continuous support through the wee hours.”
