our 2ND birthDay It’s amazing to think that two years have already passed by since we launched the Bearsden & Milngavie Community Magazine. As the news writer, it has been a pleasure to report on all the many clubs and groups in the area and to bring you some great news stories. I know there are many more groups that have not been featured and I welcome you to get in touch. Likewise if you have great stories about charity events, personal challenges or awards do contact me. I know from feedback how much people value this magazine and I look forward to another year of keeping you up-to-date with all that is going on.

Santa dash FUN Decorate a charity tree Community groups are invited to take part in the 8th Milngavie Christmas Tree Festival. A local jogging group is inviting people to join their annual charity Santa Dash for a great cause. The 5k is organised by Jog Scotland Milngavie (JSM) and takes place on December 8 at 6.30pm from the Clock Tower in Milngavie pedestrian precinct. All runners are encouraged to wear Santa fancy dress and to donate a minimum of £5 to the charity cause, Brightest Star, which supports bereaved families. Al Haydock, who runs JSM, says: “Raising money for charity at Christmas time is about remembering and helping those who are struggling at this time of year. “We had 45 runners turn out last year and it was a really fun event.
96%
We would love to see even more this year.” JSM now has around 40 runners at their regular Thursday evening meet-ups. The Santa dash will also combine with the graduation of the JSM beginners’ course. Al says: “We had 20 new runners start with our group in October and the 5k Santa Dash will be their first event. “The beginners’ course, run by members Kay Hunter and Dawn Hunter, has been a great success.” See Jog Scotland Milngavie on Facebook for details.
The fund-raising event returns next month after a year off and is organised by the Association of Milngavie Churches. Groups can sponsor and decorate Christmas trees for display at St Paul's Parish Church in Milngavie. There will also be a programme of music and a café. The charities being supported are Clober Farm Spinal Injuries Unit, Carers Link in Milngavie and Prison Fellowship – Angel Tree. The festival has raised more than £20,000 in total for local and overseas charities. You can attend from December 3 to 9, 10am to 4pm (Sunday 1pm-4pm and Friday 10am-1pm).

Many people experiencing hip pain look for help and advice. It can be caused by osteoarthritis (wear and tear in the ball and socket joint itself), worn discs in the lower spine, or a condition called trochanteric bursitis. People often suffer with trochanteric bursitis without realising it can be treated with a steroid injection. The symptoms include very localised pain and tenderness over the side of the hip, which can usually be pin-pointed. It is often made worse by lying on the same side, getting in and out of the car or walking down stairs. Hip osteoarthritis however
can cause pain throughout the hip which can spread into the groin or knee. It is associated with being overweight or high impact exercise such as professional football. Managing the pain with medication is often necessary, weight loss can help and maintaining physical activity is also important. If the pain is affecting sleep or limiting activities then your doctor could alter your medication to control the pain better. Beyond that you may need to see an orthopaedic surgeon to discuss possible hip replacement. So if you have pain shooting from the hip – don’t suffer in silence - speak to your doctor!
Get the best care for your ears... Husband and wife team Greg and Val Clements of Clements Earcare Services tell us about about their fantastic business. reg Clements launched the practice in partnership with his wife, Val, in 1996. At the time he had been working for a large national hearing aid retailer and was motivated by the strong belief that he could do a better job for the clientele as an independent practitioner. Some twenty years on he is not shaken in this belief which was recently vindicated by the results of a Which report concerning hearing care provision, wherein the independent sector (often small service providers such as ourselves) outperformed both the NHS and all the large national chains. This report is readily available online or in the Which magazine and you can read more about it on our blog. al Clements has been involved in the practice since its inception in 1996 and is a now co director with Greg. Self effacingly, she is often heard to say that she is not the "technical one" and in so doing she is deferring to Greg. This is not at all a true

Shockwave is delivered to the tissue via a compressed air impulse exerted by the hand piece. Usually no more than 3-4 sessions are needed. Each treatment takes approximately 5-10 minutes to be delivered. No surgery or other therapy is required and treatment can usually start straight away It is relatively painless No injection or invasive procedures
A running screening can benefit anyone from sporadic runners to high performing athletes. We can identify areas that can be limiting your performance and make adaptation to help you reach and exceed your personal best. The screening involves an hour long appointment. During this session we will have a look at how you move and identify any areas of which lack flexibility or which are weak – the presence of these impairments often lead to injuries during running. Following the screening, we will video your running technique on the treadmill, allowing us to identify any modifications we can make to your technique, to also help minimise your risk of injury, and in some cases improve you performance.

Charity church concert Bearsden Baptist Church is hosting a charity concert this month to raise much-needed funds for St Margaret of Scotland Hospice. Fotheringay Chamber Orchestra, conducted by David Bruce, will entertain on November 20 from 6.30pm. The orchestra comprises professional and experienced amateur musicians, many of them from the Bearsden and Milngavie area. Spokesperson Fiona Hamilton said: “We are delighted the orchestra is returning with another programme, which includes two classical favourites and a short concerto for cello.” The audience can look forward to Mozart's Overture to The Marriage of Figaro and Mendelssohn's Italian Symphony, which will be
followed by the short concerto, Kol Nidrei, by Max Bruch. Local cellist Myra Chahin is the esteemed soloist. Written in 1880, Kol Nidrei is based on two Hebrew melodies and is the composer's most frequently performed work, even more popular than his famous violin concerto. Myra’s career is impressive. After graduating from the Royal Academy of Music in London, she spent two years working with the international soloist Maurice Gendron in Germany. Following
that, she taught at the Yehudi Menuhin and Wells Cathedral Schools and worked with most of the major London Orchestras. She became Principal Cello of the Cairo Symphony Orchestra, before joining the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. She was also an acclaimed tutor for more than 20 years at what is now the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Fiona said: “We are honoured that Myra will be performing at our church concert.” St Margaret Hospice in Clydebank is the oldest and largest hospice in Scotland. Concert tickets are £8 (£5 concessions) and available at the door. Everyone is welcome. See www.bearsdenbaptistchurch. com or phone 0141 956 5246.

We are coming into the time of year when we should be increasingly aware of the importance of tyre safety. However, we are not all necessarily aware of the specifi c legal requirements placed on us. This needs to be in a complete and continuous band around the entire circumference area. Each tyre must also be free from cuts of 25mm or more, or 10% of the width, whichever is the greater. enough to result in exposure of the cords, no matter the length, will also render the tyre illegal. It should be noted that, under statute, both the driver and the registered owner of the car, if different, are responsible for ensuring the tyres are of a legal standard. Failing to do so could result in a fi ne of up to ÂŁ2,500 and three penalty points, which is applicable for each individual tyre and could therefore have serious consequences in the event your car has more than one illegal tyre. This is easily avoided if you regularly check and maintain your vehicle.

door-to-door BUSeS Senior citizens are being reminded they can take advantage of a handy door-to-door community bus service. East Dunbartonshire Community Transport (EDCT) organises trips every week for the over-60s to local shops and beyond. The minibuses are fully accessible and can collect people from their own homes, which is ideal if you fi nd it diffi cult to use public transport. Bus services run on Tuesdays and Thursdays to local supermarkets and cost £5 for the return trip. On Fridays, there are trips to shopping centres and towns further away. For residents in Bearsden and Milngavie the bus trips this month include Sterling Mills Outlet Village in Tillicoutry on the 11th for a fare of £10 return. On the 25th, a £5 trip goes to Silverburn Shopping Centre. On December 9, another outing costing £5 will head to the Glasgow Christmas Market. In addition, EDCT provides low-

The organiser of a local ukulele group is delighted by the response after we published an article in our September magazine. Bill Davis, the founder of the group, was keen to hear from more players in the area for their fortnightly meet-ups. Bill said: “Very soon after the article was published we received six emails expressing interest in joining our group and we invited them along to our next meeting. “I would like to thank you on behalf of our ukulele group for all your support. Hopefully we might be on the verge of something bigger and better in the local area.” To find out more email wom.davis@ntlworld.com

This month: power of attorney The statistics are frightening: 1 in 3 people over 65 will develop dementia. What’s more startling is that the majority of Scottish people have no formal plan in place for dealing with incapacity in the future. Consider Robert (names changed), our otherwise healthy 60 year-old client, who suffered a stroke while shopping in the West End with his wife, Helen. Rushed to Gartnavel Hospital, Robert rapidly went downhill as a series of further strokes left him debilitated. Helen was advised to put her husband into a nursing home, but she didn’t have power of attorney – meaning social services could have taken over Robert’s medication and finances. Helen was distraught

After speaking with Robert and his family our friendly solicitors were able to advise the family and put a Power of Attorney in place quickly With the POA, Helen makes decisions on Robert’s behalf and now looks after him at home with a care package organised by Home Instead. If Robert’s condition had deteriorated any further it could’ve been a longer and more costly process to allow Helen to make Robert’s decisions. GOOD
COMPANY... At The Kitchen Depot, we have always prided ourselves in our family values, on always being prepared to do whatever it takes to ensure that our customers are treated exactly as we would like to be treated ourselves - with courtesy, consideration and professionalism.
But lest we ever become complacent, we actively encourage ongoing feedback - here's what Mr Lee Sanderson has to say:
"The most incredible thing about The Kitchen Depot has been your sky-high levels of customer service. Too often a company will promote customer service as a core value, only to reveal a hollow promise when they don't live up to it." Mr Sanderson continues: "My favourite retailer is John Lewis because I know that they will do whatever they can to put something right if it goes wrong. The Kitchen Depot has performed to the same high standard."
"To favourably compare a small family business to Britain's most respected retailer is not something that I do lightly but you are well worthy of the comparison." Well, thanks for that, Mr Sanderson - please excuse us while we blush with pride. When it comes to looking after our customers, The Kitchen Depot is never knowingly undersold.
