Six thatched buildings have appeared near Mugdock Castle, which will be part of a new original Netfl ix movie 'Robert The Bruce' starring Chris Pine
Walkers at Mugdock Country Park have been surprised recently to find themselves wandering into a realistic village of medieval huts. The six thatched buildings, near Mugdock Castle, are part of a film set for the new Netflix Robert the Bruce movie, Outlaw King.

the English Army. Pine’s co-star is Aaron Taylor-Johnson, famed for his Avengers role.
Loudon Productions even hired a master thatcher to help with the authenticity of the huts for the film, which is based on the tale of Robert the Bruce.
Oscar-nominated Scottish fi lm director David Mackenzie, known for directing Hell or High Water, is writing and directing the film. It is his sixth feature film shot in Scotland.
The big-budget movie will feature Chris Pine, of Star Trek fame, as 14th century Robert the Bruce in the original Netflix movie, which is due for release next year. It will focus on Robert's clashes with
One walker at Mugdock said: “The huts look very realistic and I did wonder what was going on. On closer inspection you can see they are made of basic materials and not, in fact, stone
A planning application submitted to Stirling Council in the summer for the temporary village also includes a temporary stable for 50 horses used during a battlefield film sequence. Filming will last around 10 weeks and well into November. A full-time security presence is in place at Mugdock Park to protect the film set. Filming has also taken place across Scotland, including on an estate in Linlithgow, West Lothian, and at Dunfermline Abbey.

Milngavie Tennis Club, which has enjoyed its most successful sporting year yet, has more to celebrate after a fund-raising cash boost. The tennis club, in Auchenhowie Road, has seen all six of its adult teams – four male teams and two female teams – win promotion into their respective leagues this season. As well as reaching the singles and doubles premier divisions for the first time in the club’s history, the First Team also won the Calcutta Cup title for the second year in a row. And now the club, originally founded as a cricket club in 1904, has even more to cheer about following a £2000 award from the Tesco community funding scheme.
Club members are currently fundraising for artificial clay courts to replace the old surfaces that sadly flood regularly. More than two thirds of the required sum of ÂŁ50,000 has been raised so far through a variety of activities, as well as contributions from local businesses. Tesco teamed up with Groundwork to launch its Bags of Help funding initiative, which sees grants raised from the sale of carrier bags being awarded to local community projects. Voting ran in stores throughout July and August with customers

Club member, Mark Wilson, who has been spearheading the fundraising said: “We’ve been raising funds through a variety of methods from bag-packing to running raf es at the club. The Bags of Help donation from Tesco is a brilliant boost to the fund and we can’t thank Tesco enough – not to mention the people who voted for us with their tokens.â€? Head coach Shaun Tulloch, who also plays for the club’s first team, is delighted by the club’s growth and success in recent years. He said: “The club is experiencing a real resurgence, attracting kids and adults alike into playing tennis. We have 145 members ranging in age from four to 84. We have also had our most successful competition year to date. “We are always happy to see new faces at the club and we are looking forward to having the new courts in place.â€?

Bearsden residents can look forward to an exciting festive build-up starting with a Christmas Tree lighting up event. On December 1, from 5pm to 6.30pm, the local Christmas lights will be switched on, with the accompaniment of carol singing. Bearsden Primary will then host a Christmas Fayre, from 6.30pm to 9pm, including product stalls, food and more. Another festive highlight this year will be the creation of a star field. Roddy Hamilton, one of the organisers of the Bearsden festive events, said: The idea is for local people to join together in creating a star field leading up to Christmas. “There will be workshops in November where people can make their own stars, such as

from wood, pottery, decoupage, beads and felt. “The stars will be used to decorate Bearsden Cross in shops, trees, churches and house windows.” Other festive treats include a line up of December family films on each Saturday, storytelling, competitions and star trails, many of which will include the involvement of traders, churches and other local organisations. Roddy, who is also the minister at Bearsden’s New Kilpatrick Church, added: “We welcome everyone to get together to follow the star as we journey into Christmas.” Look out for local notices and posters for workshops.

Three young athletes from Bearsden each took first place in their age categories in a summer series of Junior Triathlons. Brother and sister Fraser and Lucy Donaldson took the top position for the 9 to 10 boys and 11 to 12 girls respectively, while Jamie Glen was first in the 11 to 12 boys section. The youngsters, who train with Glasgow Triathlon Club, competed in three separate triathlons in Galashiels, Selkirk and Peebles at part of the Live Borders triathlon series.
“Points are awarded at each of the races with the winner getting the least. The overall winner is the one who accrues the lowest points.”
They scored the least points overall to be awarded with their top places. Fraser and Lucy’s mum Michelle said: “This was a great series for

the kids. There are not many full triathlons that children aged under 11 can do but this Borders series gave them a good introduction and an opportunity to compete in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.

This is my fi rst trophy and I am very pleased with it.”
Glasgow Triathlon Club runs a busy and popular youth section that currently has a long waiting list. Youth coach Wendy Gorman said: “It is great to see so many of our Fraser enjoyed competing in all three races. An anti-fraud campaign in East Dunbartonshire is claimed to have saved the public purse £3.6million and freed up more than 40 homes. The region’s Corporate Fraud Team received 248 reports of alleged fraud in 2016/17 – up 27% on the previous year – which led to officers uncovering 42 cases of housing tenancy fraud or error. Each case of tenancy fraud costs local authorities an estimated £93,000 and has a direct impact on people on the waiting list for social housing. After investigations, 39 housing waiting list applications were identified as fraudulent or containing errors. Three properties were also identified as not being occupied and successfully reclaimed. In addition, six homelessness applications
were found to have been made fraudulently or in error. In 2016/17, the fraud team also uncovered Council Tax irregularities of £202,412, business rates evasion of £54,363 and employmentrelated fraud of £1,139. A total of £89,337 was also saved through the National Fraud Initiative. Councillor Gordan Low, Leader of the Council, said: “We’ve a zerotolerance approach to fraud and corruption, and are committed to safeguarding public funds.” If you have any information regarding fraud being committed against the council call 0300 124 4510 or see www.eastdunbarton. gov.uk/reportfraud

November 2017 | What's Up Doc?
Thinking is very much Allowed
What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn
This month: DEADLY FUMES...
The Thinking Allowed series of talks and lectures gets underway for another busy winter programme this month. The series is held jointly between Cairns Church in Milngavie and Orchardhill Parish Church in Giffnock. The first event for Milngavie is a weekend – from November 17 to 19 – of thought-provoking talks in partnership with the Progressive Christianity Network (PCN). On the Friday, 7.30pm for 8pm speaker Adrian Alker, the Chair of PCN Britain, will give a lecture entitled, Partners and Protagonists. Adrian will examine three “border areas”, which might be seen as offering positive insights into how a progressive Christian faith can partner with others.
On the Saturday, from 10 am to 4.30pm, there will be an opportunity for people, in groups, to discuss the subjects of the lecture in more detail. On the Sunday, at 10.45 am, everyone will be welcome at the Morning Service at Cairns led by Rev Andrew Frater. The address will be given by Adrian Alker, entitled: The Church We Never Knew. The ticket price for the weekend is £20, including lunch on the Saturday. The Friday and Saturday events can be attended, and paid for, separately. For more dates for this series and information about the weekend see www.cairnschurch.org.uk
COPD is a long term illness affecting the breathing, usually caused by the cumulative effects of smoking. The lungs are made up of tiny pockets called "alveoli" where the work of taking oxygen from the air for use within the body takes place. Smoking does two things. It destroys the walls between these pockets resulting in less alveoli, leaving people less able to get oxygen into their bodies, and also causes narrowing and blockage of tubes in the lungs due to swelling and thick mucus. With COPD normal activity feels like hard
However the best plan is to try to avoid the problem, so if you're thinking about smoking - don't ! If you already smoke make a plan to stop. If you need help consider speaking to your Practice Nurse or GP soon!
Is this your problem?

work and people are more likely to get chest infections. Stopping smoking makes a big difference, stops it worsening, and your doctor can prescribe inhalers and medication which make a difference. More recently advances with "lung reduction surgery" and insertion of "endo-bronchial valves" have been used by chest surgeons for some to show benefit.

The Scottish National NDP Championships took place in Perth on September 30. Head coach Jane McGaughlin said: “Rachael and her coach Susan had worked very hard to prepare for the tumbling competition, while also training as a women's artistic gymnast and taking part in the competitions involved in her main discipline.
Eleven-year-old Rachael Auld was triumphant in the tumbling discipline of the Scottish National NDP Championships at level 3 (11 to 12 years). The win for the Westerton Primary School pupil is another in a series of successes.
“We are delighted with Rachael’s success and the additional training she and her parents have committed to so as to ensure she has been able to confi dently compete at this level nationally.”
Rachel has previously won Junior Club Champion and has enjoyed a win at the NDP British Team Championships for Scotland. She also took an individual silver medal at the British NDP Championships and won gold for a qualifier for Scottish Championships. The club as a whole has enjoyed many great successes in recent years in the tumbling discipline, with gymnasts

The Simple Procedure was introduced in November 2016 and replaces the previous Small Claims actions and Summary Cause actions for payment, recovery of moveable property and orders to make someone do something specific. It covers claims with a value of less than £5,000 and was specifically designed to allow the claimant to process an action themselves. It is meant to be a less formal, cheaper and faster process than the ones it replaces; with all forms available on line and court lodging fee of only £18 for claims under £200 and £100 for anything above
that. However, this does not mean that it is necessarily ‘simple’ and it can be difficult to navigate without legal assistance. Should you require to raise an action, to recover money owed to you for example, you will firstly have to consider jurisdiction and identify the court where the action should be raised. This is usually the court nearest to where the respondent, the person owing you the money, resides. The Respondent is given the opportunity to admit liability for the claim, admit it in part, make a time to pay application or defends the action. Like any court action, the case may ultimately only be resolved by an evidential hearing.

PLAYERS TAKE TO THE STAGE
Kilmardinny Players have returned to the newly refubished Kilmardinny Arts Centre and are putting the fi nishing touches to their production of Noel Coward's 'Present Laughter'
Local amateur dramatics group Kilmardinny Players return to their home this month with their latest production, Present Laughter. The Players will perform at the refurbished Kilmardinny Arts Centre on November 2, 3 and 4 at 7.30pm each night. Present Laughter is a comic production by Noel Coward. The period piece was first performed in 1942 and tells the story of a few days in the life of a successful and self-obsessed light comedy actor Garry Essendine. He is preparing to travel for a tour in Africa amid a series of events that border on farce. The director of Kilmardinny Players is Colin Price, who is a

long-standing member of the group. Moira Crawford, another member, said: “As well as being a busy teacher, Colin fi nds time for his theatre passion through our amateur drama group.” Craig Dowers is technical director. Moira added: “Craig is a genius at manufacturing something out of nothing and creating scenery and sound and lighting effects. “His skills are needed more than ever for this production because, although Kilmardinny House has been beautifully restored, the

He will also operate it and build set and staging for our play. “However, despite the diffi culties, we are all really looking forward to being back performing in Kilmardinny Arts Centre.” For tickets [£12/£10 concessions] phone 07813 326318. Kilmardinny Players would also like to welcome members and non-members to auditions for the next production, Separate Tables, on November 20 and 23 at 7.30pm in Westerton Lesser Hall. 30th tea party for café
What are my Home Care options? This month: My article last month regarding funding options for home care drew a huge response from readers.
If you happen to be passing through Balmaha some weekend consider making a small donation via the wishing well outside The Oaktree Inn – which has steadily been amassing funds for a charity that cares for children suffering from a brain tumour. In just one week the fund collected £445 in denominations ranging from one pence to £2, all dropped in the well. The effort was inspired by one particular child the folk at the Inn encountered, and who sadly lost his fight after a hard battle. His family set up the charity “Sam” – “send a message” – which provides children like their son with Christmas presents and surprises.
Many questions came from readers who were already receiving a homecare package from their local council but it wasn’t meeting their needs due to short and irregular visit times and lack of continuity with carers. This is a common query that arises when potential clients who are already in receipt of homecare from the Council call us. Well, the good news is that if you are currently a recipient of a council homecare package you can request that you are assessed for an SDS package instead. Under SDS (Self Directed Support) Legislation you are entitled to take a Direct
Payment in lieu of the homecare package that a local council provides for you and spend that budget with a private home care provider. The advantage this will offer is that it puts you in control of the care you receive. With this payment you will have the right to choose your provider and have a tailored homecare package that meets your specific needs. Private providers such as Home Instead Senior Care will deliver minimum one hour visits with the same CarerGivers meaning you will have continuity and consistency of service. In case you missed our article last month and would like a free copy of our Home Care Funding Fact Sheet or would like to chat about your options please call us on 0141 249 0574.

Bearsden’s Café Crème is celebrating 30 years of business by throwing a tea party for customers past and present. The party will take place at Bearsden Community Hub on November 25, from 2pm to 4pm. Geraldine Dillion, one of the three sisters who own the café, said: “We are currently communicating with the local care homes to see if any former customers are able to join the celebrations. “Some customers from local churches have also kindly offered to volunteer their help with serving the food on the day.” The charge for the tea party is £3 with profits being donated to two charities, Macmillan Cancer and Help the Aged.

A popular Christmas wreaths workshop is back by popular demand – with another chance to make your own festive decoration. Jane Dixon, of Bearsden, a fine arts graduate and freelance arts administrator, is the organiser of the Burnbrae Wreath Makers Workshop, which will take place this year on Sunday December 10 at New Kilpatrick Parish Church in Bearsden from 2pm to 5pm. The cost of £40 per person includes all materials to make a completed festive wreath, as well as a glass of prosecco and mince pies. Jane said: “Many people last year told me they enjoyed making their own Christmas wreath and that they liked the format, with a glass of fi zz and the chance to chat with
the other people in the group while they were busy. “The workshop is very relaxed and it’s a lovely way to make a unique festive decoration for your home.” Guided by Jane, participants will work from a ready-created straw and sisal wreath base and then embellish it with natural materials, such as nuts, seed pods and pine cones, glitter and other Christmas decorations. Places booked up quickly last year so make sure you don’t miss out. See Burnbrae Crafts on Facebook or call Jane on 07503 010614.
JAmie’s ulTrA rAce win Local runner Jamie Aarons was the first woman home in a new long-distance event. Jamie, of Carbeth, finished the 50-mile Ochil Ultra race in nine hours 37 minutes and was 11th overall. More remarkably, she triumphed just two weeks after being discharged from hospital following a collapse during another ultra, the Tor des Geants in Italy, due to a medical condition, rhabdomyolysis. The week before the Ochil Ultra her blood results showed normal again and she decided to run “but take it steady”. She said: “I raced very much in my comfort zone and really enjoyed the whole event. I was surprised and delighted to win.”

SMITHS GROW HEAVIEST VEG at s An annual Bearsden lAsTing lighT vegetable competition saw a summer of attentive growing as neighbours bid to produce the heaviest lettuce. As is the tradition with the Russell Drive contest, the prize giving took place in September with competitors bringing their newly cut vegetable for judgment. The winners of this year’s heaviest Nyman’s cos lettuce, which could be grown from seed in a pot, a grow bag or the ground, were Frances and Ewen Smith with a huge 267g lettuce In second place were the McFarlans with a 192g lettuce and in third place were the Sleights with a 153g lettuce. Frances said: “We were delighted to win this year but we have no great secret as to how we achieved this. We grew the lettuce in a large pot and kept the slugs away with nasturtiums growing around the pot.
“We hoped it might be a weighty lettuce but until judgment day we had no idea how our neighbours were doing with their veg. Alison and Gordon McFarlan have organised the Russell Drive Vegetable Competition for many years and this year proceeds were donated to the Marie Curie Cancer Care. take it too seriously. It is a great excuse to get together with the neighbours each summer. For the fi rst time ever this year we had to hold the judging indoors because the weather was so bad. “We are now looking forward to next year's challenge and we will be taking suggestions for vegetables. CHARITY CHAMBER CONCERT The annual charity concert by the Fotheringay Chamber Orchestra will be held in aid of East Dunbartonshire Association for Mental Health. The concert takes place at Bearsden Baptist Church on Saturday November 18 at 7pm and comprises three short classical works, one of which features local musician Lorna McTier (pictured) in Mozart's charming Andante for Flute and Orchestra K315. The other works are Symphony No.5
by Schubert and a short rarity by Haydn, his Symphony No.47 known as The Palindrome. Lorna was born into a musical family, but had no strong impulse to follow in the footsteps of her sister, the oboist Janice Knight, until the age of 13. Then she heard a performance of a Mozart flute concerto and instantly made her lifelong choice.
Her first instrument was an old wooden flute from the school cupboard and though her flutes have changed a great deal since then, her love of Mozart has never wavered. Lorna’s professional career has seen her appointed principal flute with the University of London Symphony Orchestra, as well as a number of Glasgow-based orchestras, including Amicus, the Glasgow Chamber Orchestra and Glasgow Orchestral Society. Lorna and her husband, double-bass player Ian, have been stalwarts of

COMPANY... At The Kitchen Depot, we have always prided ourselves in our family values, on always being prepared to do whatever it takes to ensure that our customers are treated exactly as we would like to be treated ourselves - with courtesy, consideration and professionalism.
But lest we ever become complacent, we actively encourage ongoing feedback - here's what Mr Lee Sanderson has to say:
"The most incredible thing about The Kitchen Depot has been your sky-high levels of customer service. Too often a company will promote customer service as a core value, only to reveal a hollow promise when they don't live up to it." Mr Sanderson continues: "My favourite retailer is John Lewis because I know that they will do whatever they can to put something right if it goes wrong. The Kitchen Depot has performed to the same high standard."
"To favourably compare a small family business to Britain's most respected retailer is not something that I do lightly but you are well worthy of the comparison." Well, thanks for that, Mr Sanderson - please excuse us while we blush with pride. When it comes to looking after our customers, The Kitchen Depot is never knowingly undersold.
