FUNDS FOR ‘OUR WORLD’
The calendar features a breathtaking photo from around the world for each month. Alun’s photos appear on six of the months, as well as the front cover.
A Bearsden hairstylist has created a stunning calendar with his photographs from around the world to raise funds for two charities. Alun Thomson, who founded Headway on the Switchback more than 40 years ago, has partnered with a photographer friend Jordan Russell for the project called Our World 2019. The charities that will benefit from the sale of the calendar are Mercy Centre Bangkok and City Mission, Glasgow.
Alun said: “For many years I’ve been passionate about photography and with this enthusiasm I’ve been lucky enough to travel and capture some beautiful places in the world. “On one of several visits to Thailand, I discovered the children’s orphanage in Bangkok.
Upon learning more about the Mercy Centre, I was determined to assist the children they care for. “I also decided I wanted to aid the impoverished people of my hometown, Glasgow. “Combining my keen interest for photography and dedication to helping these two charities, I have been inspired to create this calendar with Jordan.
They include camels in the Sahara desert, Northern Lights and Skogafoss Waterfall, both in Iceland; Benjakitti Park in Bangkok city centre, Thailand; and a woman from a small village, Khon Kean, in the north of Thailand. Alun, who still works at Headway, sold it to the current owner Gregor McAlpine in 2003. To purchase the charity calendar for ÂŁ15 call in at Headway or go to Bearsden Beauty, also on the Switchback.

GOLDEN GALA FOR CHOIR An historic local choir is looking forward to presenting a special golden jubilee season with two exciting gala concerts. Bearsden Choir was founded in 1968 as a community choir under the sponsorship of Provost Fisher, the then provost of Bearsden and Milngavie Burgh Council. The choir gave its first performance, Handel’s Messiah, as the Bearsden Burgh Choir on December 18 in its first year in the former Rio Cinema in Bearsden. Next month, on December 16, the same work has been chosen for a gala concert at Glasgow City Halls. A further concert,
performing Bach B Minor Mass, will take place in May 2019. Carol Young, Vice Chair of Bearsden Choir, said: “That very first performance of Handel’s Messiah was intended as a oneoff but enthused by the success of the performance, the members of the choir resolved to establish the Bearsden Burgh Choir as a permanent feature on the classical choral circuit. “It is hard to believe that we are 50 years old and the choir

has enjoyed many performances since. We are very much looking forward to celebrating the small beginning with two golden gala concerts, showcasing two of the greatest works in the classical choral repertoire.” The Messiah at 4pm on December 16 will include soloists, soprano Monica McGhee, mezzo-soprano Penelope Cousland, tenor Jamie MacDougall and bass-baritone Tristan Hambleton. Tickets are priced £20/£17.50/£5 from City Halls Box Office. See www.glasgowconcerthalls.com or email enquires to enquiries@bearsdenchoir.co.uk.

CALLUM WINS ACADEMY SLOT work so I cut myself some slack.
A high-achieving teenage athlete from Bearsden is thrilled to have qualified for a new Triathlon Scotland Scottish Academy.
“I was absolutely ecstatic when I found out I had got a place on the squad. It has always been one of my goals to be a part of Triathlon Scotland and to have achieved that on my first trial, I was over the moon. In fact, I still am. I am so excited to go on camps with the squad and meet and learn from other dedicated athletes.”
Callum Miller, 14, is the first in his Glasgow Triathlon Club to make the academy following a trial day at the University of Stirling. The young athletes had to complete time trials in running and swimming. These times were then calculated by a points’ matrix on British Triathlon’s website to see if the youngsters had the minimum requirement of points for being in the academy squad. Callum says: “The minimum for qualification was 320 points and on the day I achieved a score of 337, which I was pleased with. “I exceeded my own expectations in the swim, really being pushed by hard competition, and
The academy will give Callum access to high-level coaches for support, guidance and teaching.
achieved a time of 02:17 for 200m freestyle. “In the run, I was a few seconds off of PB pace, which was frustrating. It was, however, the very last activity after a hard day’s
As well as being a member of GTC, Callum is also grateful for the support he receives being part of Milngavie & Bearsden Swimming Club and Garscube Harriers. He has also recently been offered sponsorship from Foot Medic at Bearsden Cross. They are offering Callum consultations, treatments and kit.

Classical guitarist Sean Shibe, from Edinburgh, will play Milngavie Music Club for their next concert on Friday 16th November at 7.30pm at Cairns Church. Sean has been compared to the great classical guitarist Julian Bream by the Sunday Times and his recordings have received rave reviews. A Bearsden restaurant is one of 27 new “Bib Gourmands” awarded by Michelin for 2019.
A community event is set to create a sparkling festive display – and raise funds for a variety of good causes.
Monadh Kitchen is delighted to have received the prestigious accolade, which is awarded to highlighted restaurants offering "exceptionally good food at moderate prices".
The Christmas Tree Festival is organised by an ecumenical group from a number of churches and will be hosted by St Paul's Parish Church in Milngavie from Saturday December 1 to 7.
The New Kirk Road restaurant prides itself on serving “traditional Scottish food with a contemporary twist” and offers a market menu of three courses for £22.95. Sharlene Thliveros, Restaurant Manager, said: “The award was totally unexpected, just 15 months after opening. To get a Bib Gourmand is a total honour and something we could only dream of. We are over the moon.”

The concept is that different groups come forward to offer to decorate a Christmas tree. In previous years, some 35 trees have been decorated, each with a different theme and with lots of imagination. Decorators and visitors can look forward to an eclectic programme of musical entertainment that also takes place throughout the week of the festival.
It is a free event but donations are welcomed and these will be distributed to a number of local charities. This year the festival will be supporting Milngavie Youth Café on Mugdock Road; Glasgow Street Pastors, a volunteer initiative demonstraing compassionate care in the heart of the city; and East Dunbartonshire Woman's Aid, Scotland’s domestic abuse and forced marriage helpline. Jim and Maureen Rennie showing off their competition winning sunower head
An annual street horticultural competition saw green-fingered neighbours vying to win a friendly sunower growing competition. Thanks to a warm and sunny summer, the contest in Russell Drive, Bearsden, led to a fabulous array of the tall, yellow flowers.
Maureen Rennie to be the winners. Their sunflower head had a diameter of 25.5cm.
But rather than measuring the tallest sunflower, on judging day it was the largest sunflower head that triumphed.
There was a tie for second place with two sunflowers measuring 25cm. They were grown by Frances and Ewan Smith and the Douglas family. In third place was the Mcfarlans with 23.5cm.
The results of a dozen entered sunflowers revealed Jim and

KIDS ENJOY DANCE FESTIVAL A Scottish dance festival celebrated its sixth birthday as the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society reached a milestone 95th anniversary.
With a live band taking the lead, the children enjoyed a number of popular communal dances, including the Virginia Reel, the Dashing White Sergeant and the Flying Scotsman. Each school also gave a performance of two specialist dances. Margaret Sanders, of Bearsden, who is the chairman of the Glasgow branch of the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society, said: “The society is obviously keen on encouraging young dancers and this type of event epitomises their efforts.”
The 6th Bearsden and Milngavie Primary Schools Scottish Dance Festival saw more than 400 children from nine local schools enjoying the event at Milngavie Town Hall on Friday October 5. The festival is organised in conjunction with the New Kilpatrick Scottish Country Dance Club and supported by the Glasgow branch of the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society whose members help out on the day and in advance to teach the dances. Depute Provost Gary Pews opened the proceedings saying that he hadn’t done much dancing himself in the past, but he was hoping to be inspired by the children taking part in the proceedings.

PUPILS HELP TO OPEN NEW SCHOOL What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn
This month: HOT AND BOTHERED...?
Tess and Ewan were on hand to help officially open St Nicholas' Primary school
Two pupils were on hand to help the provost of East Dunbartonshire officially open their new school. Youngsters Tessa and Ewan assisted Provost Alan Brown to unveil a plaque at St Nicholas’ Primary last month.
school and it is clear that the children are enjoying learning and playing in their bright and modern new surroundings.
The new £10 million school on Duntocher Road has been home to 370 pupils from the former St Joseph’s and St Andrew’s primaries since August.
“With its exible indoor and outdoor learning spaces there is plenty to inspire their young minds.
St Nicholas is the fifth new school to be built through the council’s Primary School Improvement Programme. The event was attend by other pupils, teachers, parents, councillors and invited guests. Provost Brown said: “There is already a great feeling of warmth and community spirit within this
“It was my great pleasure to officially open St Nicholas’ Primary and I wish the head teacher, her staff and pupils every success in their new school. The final word at the opening event went to pupils Ewan and Tessa, who agreed: “Our new school is fantastic and making new friends has been really good.
Last month saw “Menopause Day draw attention to problems which affect 8 out of 10 women around the age of 50. It refers to a group of symptoms caused when women’s ovaries stop producing a hormone called Oestrogen.
women can be experiencing symptoms without realising they can get help with this.
These include hot flushes, night sweats, sleep problems, reduced libido, headaches, mood changes or anxiety, palpitations, joint stiffness, recurrent urine infections or pelvic discomfort, and longer term can increase risk of fractures due to osteoporosis.
Your GP can discuss this with you, and help includes Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT), Antidepressants, Clonidine (a drug which helps with flushes). Certain foods which are high in phytooestrogens can help and important lifestyle changes such as reducing alcohol intake, increasing exercise and stopping smoking can also go a long way in reducing symptoms.
The average age of onset is 51, and sometimes

Al-Anon A child’s details should be provided to the Registrar within twenty one days of birth. Either the mother or father of the child can register the birth if the parents are married. In the event the natural parents are not married, then the parents would most commonly attend the Registrar’s office together for both names to appear on the birth certificate. The mother can also register the birth alone. However, the father would require the mother’s consent in order to be able to register the child without the mother being present. If the women were in a cohabiting relationship but not a civil partnership or married, the mother and her partner are able to register the child’s birth jointly. Being registered on the birth certificate will provide both parents with full parental rights and responsibilities in relation to the child. filling in your calendar and diary with parties, school events, family gatherings, term times and anything else that comes to mind. If you have kids at school, make sure to include when they break up and any festive plays that might be taking place. Planning on ordering a turkey? Make a note of when you can order and when you can pick it up. The more organised you are now, the better it will be when the time comes .
Start Making Homemade Gifts Homemade and personalised Christmas gifts are the most memorable gifts you can give. Why? Because the recipient knows that you've invested a significant amount of your time. By brainstorming homemade ideas now, you're more likely to have the time necessary to complete the project.
Organise your Christmas Lists Many families do lists, and many do not, so if you do ask people for their lists, go ahead and contact them now. Inevitably, there is going to be one person who takes their time getting a list to you. That's less likely to be frustrating if you have an early start.
Start Watching for Sale Items Keep an eye on TV and printed adverts for shop sales, deals and vouchers. If you find an item on your list, get it while it's on sale. One personal goal is to have all our Christmas shopping done by the last day of November. That way you don't have to fight against the last-minute buying crowds on Christmas Eve.

middle of November – wouldn't that be a relief? Go ahead and set a target goal of when you'd like to finish all your cards. Then create some type of plan to be done by that date. You could either mark off a morning on your calendar or do a little bit at a time.
Fill Up the Freezer There are a lot of great meals that you can freeze ahead of time so you have food available for those busy times. Prepare double or triple portions of some of your recipes. Serve a single portion, and freeze the extra portions. Another option is to block out a full cooking day where

Royal Mail Delivery Deadlines Sending out Christmas cards and presents to your friends and family around the world can always be a bit stressful – due to how manic the post office becomes over the festive season. To dodge those nightmare queues at Christmas, buy your stamps now. The same goes with sending presents and parcels. Let friends and family know that their presents will be arriving early, and to put them away for Christmas morning. Check the Royal Mail delivery times and start preparing and get everything out before the rush.
With an early start and a bit of planning, you can survive the hectic holiday rush. When Christmas is over for another year, you will look back and have no regrets of the time you've spent preparing for Christmas while the pace of life is a little bit slower

Winter is now truly upon us and one of the biggest factors for winter hospital admissions in the elderly are Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs). This will be the first in a series of three articles on this condition. UTIs are caused when E. coli bacteria enters the urethra and travels to the bladder or kidney, it can affect all or different parts of the urinary tract. A bladder/ kidney infection can be nothing more than a brief nuisance, or it can cause major discomfort and require medicine and rest. The elderly do not exhibit the same symptoms as younger sufferers therefore the entire body can be affected before an infection is suspected and diagnosed, in some cases an emergency that requires immediate treatment. Men and women can suffer however women are more susceptible.
Risk factors that can increase the chances of a UTI: • Not urinating frequently • Diabetes • Poor hygiene habits • Kidney stones • Certain medications • Incontinence – especially people who wear incontinence aids • Immobility resulting in Inadequate bathroom breaks • Difficult clothing to remove when visiting bathroom • Simply forgetting to go • Not relaxed therefore not completely emptying the bladder • Dehydration (which will only exacerbate the issue) • Menopause (women) urinary tract lining thins and weakens • Enlarged prostate (men) obstructs urine flow. Join us next month to learn about ‘Signs and Symptoms of a UTI’

10K JOG COURSE
provides free yoga classes to children and adults with special needs and their carers is hoping to attract sponsors. Yogability, run by Helen McGinn and Debbie MacNab, in Bearsden, Milngavie, Drumchapel, Bishopbriggs and East Kilbride, relies on donations and grant funding to provide their compassionate service.
A new “couch to 10k” jogging course is being launched due to huge local demand. When Jog Scotland Milngavie announced the course in the autumn, it was over-subscribed. Now the group is organising another 12-week programme that will start on Tuesday January 15.
Yogability staff are looking to attract sponsors to support their free yoga classes
Now they are hoping that local businesses will come forward to provide sponsorship so they can continue with classes.
The group also has a waiting list for one-to-one yoga for kids and adults with special needs.
Helen said: “Having local businesses sponsor our classes is a wonderful and positive way for them to bring direct support to the community, affecting the lives of their customers who use our services in a unique way.
Helen added: “We really need some fundraising support to allow us to extend our one-toone sessions to more people. There is such a high demand and extra funds would really help us to go ahead.”
“Their support would allow us to continue with existing classes and begin new ones in the local area. We would advertise their support with the aim to mutually benefit all parties.”
To offer your support, whether as a sponsor or with fundraising, or to find out more about the yoga offered, contact: helen@yogability.org.uk
Jog leader Hazel Maclean said: “We had to disappoint people because we did not have the capacity to safely lead all the runners who applied for the course. “We’ve decided to start another couch to 10k programme and this time it will be perfectly timed to tackle those post-festive season excesses.” Email jogscotlandmilngavie@ gmail.com or see Facebook “jog scotland Milngavie”.

DIRECT ACCESS, HIGH QUALITY CARE FOR BABIES & CHILDREN Do you want the peace of mind to be able to directly access a paediatrician for advice or treatment whenever there is an issue with your baby or child? Or perhaps you just need support from a specialist children’s dietitian with your baby’s feeding issues?
MERAS Children’s Healthcare is the only private children’s clinic in Scotland that is licensed and registered to provide care for patients aged 0-16 years in the independent sector. We are a community centred service, aiming to improve the standard of health and wellbeing of babies and children in Scotland. We especially welcome those who do not have access to NHS services and, consequently, have nowhere else to turn for support. The clinical service is led by a Consultant Specialist Paediatrician and provides co-ordinated care and access
to highly specialised children’s physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, audiology, child psychology, nutrition and dietetics. To ensure we maintain a high standard of care, we only accept a limited number of patients. Whenever spare capacity becomes available (e.g. families move home, out of our catchment area), we open the service to accept new enrolments We are therefore currently accepting a limited number of new patients, on a first come first served basis.
We provide a wide range of services including (but not limited to):
Allergy service Child development Medical consultations Immunisations (including those vaccines not routinely available in the NHS) • Feeding and nutrition (including a tongue tie service, for babies who are breastfeeding) • Parental advisory helpline via video linkup to a child health professional such as a Consultant Paediatrician, from the comfort of your own home • Parental training workshops (recognition of the sick child, baby and child life support, parenting skills and training to enhance child development) • • • •
To register your child or simply to find out more, please email admin@merashealthcare.com with your name and phone number and one of the clinic administration team will be happy to contact you to help support your request or enquiry.

TEEN TRIO’S WALK FOR FUNDS Three teenagers from Bearsden completed the West Highland Way in just four days in a bid to raise funds for a World Challenge expedition.
EXPLORE YOUR ARCHIVES WEEK This month is the annual launch of the Explore Your Archives campaign in the region. Taking place from November 17 to 25, it is the ideal time to discover more about East Dunbartonshire Archives, which is a unique resource that is free for all to access and use. You can visit Bearsden and Kirkintilloch libraries to find out more or explore the huge online catalogue.
Hannah Nibbs and Luke Aitken, both 16, and Robbie Burnside, 17, who all attend Bearsden Academy, completed the 96-mile trail from Fort William to Milngavie without outside support and carrying all their own equipment. They were being sponsored by friends and family in a bid to raise funds for the expedition to Madagascar in June 2019. The trio faced a number of challenges during their long walk, including carrying heavy packs, blistered and aching feet and tough weather conditions.

expedition. As part of the trip, the teenagers will be helping with a school project. Madagascar is one of the poorest countries in the world and more than 40 per cent of the population is illiterate so schools are very important. Hannah said: “When we are in Madagascar we will spend time at a local school, teaching people about our culture and where we live. We will also be helping to paint the school and create a better learning environment for them.” The teenagers have all been busy doing a range of fund-raising activities, as well as the West Highland Way sponsored walk.” To support the fund-raising see: www.justgiving.com/ crowdfunding/westhighland wayworldchallenge

A 21st century “legion” of 300 volunteers will be trained to help codesign projects in their communities, act as tour guides, help with research and raise awareness. Councillor Billy Hendry, Convener of East Dunbartonshire Council’s Place, Neighbourhood & Corporate Assets Committee, said: “This is very welcome news, providing support for a unique project that will help to create a window on the rich history of the Antonine Wall.” The HLF award is match funded by contributions from each of the partner local authorities and other external sources, including the LEADER programme.
