FAMILY’S WINNING HOCKEY TEAM Hockey players from three generations of one family were delighted to play in the same team for the first time – and win a match. Stuart Dick, 72, his son Simon Hamilton Dick, 40, and Simon’s 12-year-old son Fraser played for Milngavie-based Western Wildcats in a league match against Helensburgh. Stuart and Simon have been members of the Wildcats for around 26 years, while Fraser, who attends Boclair Academy, is new to the 4th Team. Stuart said: “It felt very good to have all of us playing for the same team and to be part of the same club. “We won our match 4-2 against Helensburgh in the Division 3 North League. “Simon scored one of our goals and Fraser assisted with another goal. “It’s the first time we have been able to play for the same team and it happened because Fraser is now old enough to play with the seniors.” It was the early 1990s when Stuart moved with his children,

including Simon, to Milngavie. Previously Simon had played football for an English team but when he arrived in Scotland he decided to take up hockey. While Stuart was spectating at a Western Wildcats match, he was encouraged to join the club, too, and they have both been members since. Stuart said: “I learned to play hockey in my 40s so I don’t have all the skills that the youngsters learn but I enjoy playing. Simon went on to do really well and he played to a high standard in the 2nd team.

Simon, Fraser and Stuart Dick all played together for Western Wildcats against Helensburgh

“Simon is now in the 4th team while I am in the 5th team and more recently Fraser was invited to join the 4th team alongside his dad. It’s a great sport because it allows players of all ages to be in the same team.”

Stuart, who now lives in Drymen, said: “It’s not unusual for there to be a few swaps between teams to make up numbers.

But the match against Helensburgh was the first time that the three generations had played together.

“On this occasion, some of the 4th team players mixed into our team and that was how I came to be playing with my son and

grandson. It was great that we could all play together.” The Western Wildcats is one of the oldest and most successful clubs in Scottish hockey. They are always keen to have new players whether juniors, men or women. To find out more see westernwildcats.co.uk.

Bearsden Baptist Church, which already has close connections to an Antonine Wall project, is the poignant location for the event on Saturday November 2. The book, Romans and The Antonine Wall of Scotland, is written by John Richardson. The author has long had an interest in Scottish history and he is also the founder of a Roman history society, the Antonine Guard. Bearsden Baptist Church, which was originally Maxholme House, is part of the Antonine Wall, now a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. The church has Roman ramparts in its grounds and is situated opposite the site of preserved Roman Baths. More recently, the church has received funding from the

The Festive Training Run will include a Half Marathon and 10k, as well as a 5k and 2k. The half marathon route follows a traffic-free cycle path between Dumbarton and Lock 27 at Anniesland. The 10k is from Dalmuir to Anniesland, while the shorter runs will be out-and-back courses from Anniesland. Scottish former distance runner, Lachie Stewart, will once again start the half marathon runners. Maurice Donohue, one of the organisers, said: “We encourage volunteers and participants to wear something festive or

The runs are not timed, which means they are classed as training runs, however the route will be supported with marshals and signage.” To take part in any of the runs, entrants are asked to make an “honesty” donation of whatever they can afford atuk. virginmoneygiving.com/Team/20 19festiverunfundingneurosportin gmemories. Two local women have raised thousands of pounds for their chosen charities after pledging to take on the toughest race of their lives. Hilary Glen, of Bearsden, and Maggie Darroch, of Milngavie, completed a challenging Ironman event in September. They were part of a 30-strong group of athletes from Glasgow Triathlon Club who all completed Ironman Wales. The race in Tenby comprises a 2.4-mile sea swim, a 112-mile hilly bike ride and then a 26.2-mile (marathon) run. Hilary, a consultant at the Beatson West Of Scotland Cancer Centre, raised ÂŁ5000 for the Beatson Cancer Charity. She adds this

money to the ÂŁ20,000 she has raised for the charity – and Cancer Research UK – since 2014 by taking part in numerous sporting events. Hilary’s husband Paul also took part in Ironman Wales. She said: “I was thrilled with my achievement in the Ironman. It is great that I have been able to raise more money for Beatson Cancer Charity and it’s thanks to everyone for their kind donations. As a consultant I see the benefits to patients from the charities.â€? Meanwhile, Maggie has raised ÂŁ1800 for Reverse Rett, a charity

NEED IT DONE RIGHT?

that is dedicated to supporting people with Rett Syndrome, a genetic brain disorder that typically affects females. Maggie said: “One of my friend’s daughters has Rett Syndrome and until then I had not heard of the condition but I have since seen its impact. Rett has been reversed in the lab and there is hope that one day they can reverse it in people. However, the charity is little known and they need support. Maggie revealed that the fundraising helped with her motivation in the Ironman. She said: “Knowing that I was raising funds for a good cause helped to get me over that finish line. I also had the most fun I’ve had in a day. It was a superb event.

NEW TEST FOR HEART DISEASE? What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn

This month: ALL BEING WELL…?

Barely a week goes by without some news about heart attacks and strokes or “good” and “bad” cholesterol. We worry about high cholesterol or ‘bad’ cholesterol because of the impact it has on cardiovascular risk. In other words, how much it affects the chances of having problems like a heart attack or stroke. Unfortunately, we in the West of Scotland top the leader board for these problems.

Park at Maryhill, taking part in a worldwide study to help assess the importance of Lp(a). A higher level of Lp(a) may be genetic but it may also be higher in people who have had a heart attack or a stroke or are at risk of one. 45,000 people will take part in this project by simply having a simple blood test. Anyone who has had a heart attack or a stroke within the last 10 years can participate.

Although cholesterol is important, it is not the whole story. Lp(a) is a cholesterol-related protein that may be important in increasing the risk of heart attacks Locally this study is being and strokes. conducted by CPS Research who can be contacted by telephone CPS Research is a local research at 0141 946 7888. company, based in the Science

What is the difference between Health and Well-being? As doctors we are concerned with keeping people as healthy as possible, but clearly this is not the whole story. Health in its simplest sense, is just about not being ill. Well-being is described as “feeling good and functioning well”. The New Economics Foundation, describes a more positive approach by encouraging people to live their best life by doing these five things: Connect – with family, friends, colleagues or neighbours – building connections provides stability in a fast-changing world; Take Notice – Use all your senses to appreciate what’s around you and take stock from time to

time to reflect on who or what is important to you; Keep learning – find new challenges and experiences – this keeps you young and builds confidence ; Be Active – Regular exercise lifts mood and reduces anxiety as well as staying fit – walking, running cycling, swimming or dancing, it doesn’t matter what; Give – Do something for others when you can, even something small – it will make you feel better, as well as those around you. As people, including GPs, are living busier lives, we could all benefit from paying attention to our well-being!

Jen, a physiotherapist from Bearsden will be running the London Marathon 2020, hoping to raise money for charity

Jen said: “As part of my work as a newly qualified physiotherapist, I had the opportunity to spend time with the EB team at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust in London. “This is only one of two specialist centres in England for adults with EB due to the rarity of the condition. “Before working with the team, I’d never heard of Epidermolysis Bullosa and DEBRA. I decided that I wanted to support the charity that helps people with EB and one that also does research to find a cure for the genetic condition.”

Training is going well for Jen, who attended Castlehill Primary School and Bearsden Academy, before going to Glasgow Caledonian University. She has taken part in a half marathon event and also plans to climb Ben Nevis as part of her bid to raise £3000 for DEBRA UK. Jen who now lives in London, said: “I can’t quite believe that I have decided to run a marathon and I still have a long way to go with my training but I hope the hard work will pay off and I’ll raise my target amount for the charity DEBRA”. But even although we all know how frenetic it can become even the most experienced organisers of the perfect family Christmas can find themselves overwhelmed by what can seem a hugely complex and demanding task – and that at a time of year when the weather outside can be frightful (to coin a phrase). It’s all very well to talk about “planning, but that rather takes the spontaneity out of things, relegating what should be a happy annual occasion to just another irksome chore. Possibly the best approach is to plan the absolutely unavoidable

basics first, leaving time for shopping and other preparations that could even be – dare to mention it – fun. Inevitably most of us will go online for a fair bit of the annual spend, but a look at what’s available on the doorstep (and at the advertisements in The Community Magazine) can yield interesting ideas at often value-for-money prices, and often of the sort of individual gifts that aren’t necessarily available at the click of a mouse.

Dereaming oif Christmas Feature | November 2019 Then there is the minor but still important detail – the visitor who doesn’t drink much, but is very partial to a nice Fino sherry, or the cousin who is strictly vegetarian or, increasingly more likely these days, the guests who are fully committed to a Vegan diet. For festive food fare, for example, you might want to check out the deals at your quality local butcher or poulterer, baker, confectioner, etc – and maybe award yourself some time for a leisurely trawl through one or more of the excellent markets that pop up within easy reach of home at this time of year.

You can, of course, if hard pressed, let your fingers do the walking and just order everything online, but that tends to lend a certain dull predictability to a season which should be about individuality and surprises.

From a practical point of view you can set yourself a budget in advance, so you don’t get too carried away – but with this type of shopping you will invariably see items that suddenly “click” as brilliant gift choices for this uncle or that niece.

Not everybody fancies the idea of a Christmas Day excursion to some favourite local restaurant, but it can be a welcome relief – and a treat – for those who will be doing all the cookery on December 25 to be able to enjoy at least one special evening where they

While pondering how to spend your hard-earned cash - and on what – you might also like to consider how much cooking and washing up you intend to do over the Christmas season.

don’t have to do anything but relax and enjoy themselves.

Nor do you have to restrict these choices to the no doubt excellent traditional Christmas offerings, as a diversion into (for example) Asian, Chinese or Mediterranean cuisine can be a welcome break from delightful but very familiar Scottish fare.

Of course a lot of preChristmas preparation is always going to be strictly practical – you must catch the last posting date for Uncle Archie in New Zealand, and you must place that special order with the family butcher by a certain date… so best to get the “must-do’s” out of the way as quickly as possible, giving yourself plenty of time to fine tune your own “perfect Christmas” at something like a leisurely pace.

Above all, be sure to have yourself a merry little Christmas – it needn’t be a frenetic last-gasp dash to the shops if you get the basics right, and at the end of it you can congratulate yourself, perhaps with a glass of mulled wine and a mince pie, on a “job” that has been not only jolly, but jolly well done.

CHURCH REVAMP

Legal Matters

A Milngavie church is delighted to annouce interior improvements for the benefit of the congregation and wider community. Allander Evangelical Church is in the process of enhancing the building with better lighting, extended carpeting, more comfortable chairs and the replacement of old-style bench seats. The funds for the latest work have come from members’ contributions, including legacies. The refurbishment is due to be completed this month.

According to recent research, more than half of all adults in Scotland do not have a will. Considering one’s own mortality can be difficult, and younger adults often believe that will-making is something to be attended to later in life.

The church has a busy programme of activities. See www.allanderchurch.org.uk.

Are you a parent? If so, you may wish to consider appointing guardians for your children, if you die before they reach 18. The only way to do so, is to make a will. Do you live with a partner? Unmarried partners do not automatically inherit from each other’s estates unless set out in their wills. Some people are put off by the potential cost of instructing

During November, solicitors up and down the country will be providing will writing services for free, and encouraging their clients to make a donation in lieu of fees, to Will Aid. Will Aid is a British charity, founded in 1988, and is a special partnership between the legal profession and nine of the UK’s best loved charities. If you have been putting off making a will, why not consider doing so, this November?

PRAISE FOR DANCE FESTIVAL LET’S TALK

ABOUT: TRIDENT

Pupils from across the area took part in the Primary Schools Scottish Country Dance recently

Youngsters from across Bearsden and Milngavie came together to take part in an annual Scottish country dance festival. Primary seven pupils from Mosshead, Baljaffray, Craigdhu, Castlehill, Baldernock, Bearsden, Killermont, Milngavie and Clober schools enjoyed the event last month at Milngavie Town Hall. The Bearsden & Milngavie Primary Schools Scottish Country Dance was opened by Councillor Andrew Polson, Joint Leader of East Dunbartonshire Council, before local piper Iain Smith led representatives with banners from each school into the hall.

The children took part in five core dances together and two nominated dances individually, with music provided by John Carmichael and his Scottish dance band. Experienced dancers from the local area helped pupils to prepare for the festival in advance. Event organiser Walter Proven was delighted with another successful festival. He said: “It was a fabulous event, promoting social skills and cultural awareness, as well as encouraging young people to get active.

YOGAJO’S Yoga can benefit anyone, regardless of age, inflexibility or even disability

“If you can breathe, you can do yoga” Chair Yoga is a great way to practice yoga for those who can’t get on the floor for a traditional mat-based class. It’s ideal for older people who might struggle with mobility issues, those with injury, disability, Parkinsons, MS, fibromyalgia, chronic back pain or chronic fatigue syndrome to name but a few.

"I want to pay tribute to everyone who helped to make this year's festival such a success. I hope all the participants enjoyed the day as much as I did and we hope to be back to do it all again next year.” The event is linked to the Bearsden Festival, which connected community, arts and mental health with a packed programme in May. Cllr Polson said: “Congratulations to all the children involved this year and well done to everyone behind the scenes who helped to organise the festival, which combines music, dance and healthy exercise. “It's an excellent event and I am sure it will continue to go from strength to strength.”

Local people are invited to an event that will focus on Britain’s nuclear submarines. We Need to Talk... About Trident takes place on November 14 in St Andrew’s Upper Hall, Bearsden, from 7.30pm to 9pm. (Arrive at 7.15pm.) You will hear from MSP Ross Greer (Green), MP Stewart McDonald (SNP), MSP Maurice Corry (Conservative), Cllr Murray (Lib Dem) and a Labour representative, as well as Father John Gannon and The Very Reverend Dr Alan D McDonald. It has been organised by St Andrew’s Bearsden, St Joseph’s Milngavie and New Kilpatrick, Bearsden. Contact: John Desmond at jondes2015@gmail.com or on 0141 942 2252 for further details about the event.

PIANIST CLARE PLAYS CAIRNS AGAIN Senior Savvy An exciting awardwinning pianist is set to return for a second performance in Milngavie this month.

with Suhail Rehman

This month: FAQS: BEING A CAREGIVER Misconceptions may get in the way when applying for a job in care. Here are some frequently asked questions by people who may be verging on a decision to make a career change.

Milngavie Music Club welcomes Clare Hammond again to Cairns Church for the club’s next concert on Friday November 8. Clare is a winner of the prestigious Royal Philharmonic Society Young Artist of the Year Award. She played to great acclaim as part of the MMC programme two years ago. Her programme will include music by Bach, Rachmaninov, Debussy and Schumann, as well as a rarity by Mozart’s almostforgotten Czech contemporary Myslivicek and a new piece by British composer Hywel Davies. Hugh Macdonald, from MMC, said: “Clare is increasingly in demand in the UK and abroad, with recordings and regular broadcasts spreading her reputation far and wide.” The music club’s audience now averages more than 200 people, who enjoy the informal

ambience and fine acoustics of Cairns Church. Hugh said: “We expect tickets for Clare’s concert to be popular so we encourage people to book early.” Tickets are on sale at The Honeybee Bakery, Station Road, Milngavie, and at the church on the night (cash or cheque only). They are priced £14 (students £5, school pupils free). For further details see the MMC website at www.milngaviemusic.org. Phone enquiries on 07708 471776 (or text).

“I know I’d be great at the companionship side of care and chat to clients all day. But I don’t know if I would want to wash and bathe clients.”

“I’d love to be a CAREGiver as it sounds like something, I’d be great at, but I’ve never worked in care nor received any training! Is there any point in applying?”

“I’ve spent too long stuck inside an office, so I’m looking for a job that will get me outdoors and on my feet. Would being a CAREGiver will achieve this?”

“What happens if I encounter some difficulty or struggle? Would I manage with a client?”

If you’re looking for the answers to these questions or are thinking of becoming a caregiver and are looking for more information call us today or visit: www.homeinstead.co.uk. It’s important to care about the well-being of CAREGivers.

The contest has taken place for around 18 years with a wide range of different vegetables being produced. Trish has been narrowly beaten to first place on a number of occasions. She said: “I didn’t do anything special this year. I followed the

instructions we were given. However, I am a farmer's daughter so maybe that helped!” Trish previously organised the fun vegetable growing competition before handing it on to Alison and Gordon McFarlan some 10 years ago. Alison said: “I am so pleased that Trish has finally won. It has been so close on many occasions and it’s great that she is this year’s winner. “Most people managed to produce a crop of potatoes this season and that was good to see. For those who didn't, don't despair because there is always next year!”

WE’RE GETTING GREENER BOWIE Local residents have been praised for an increase in recycling rates in the campaign to combat climate change. Recycling has risen to 54.6 per cent across East Dunbartonshire according to the latest 2018 statistics produced by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA). The figure is higher than the national average and an increase of more than six per cent from the previous year. It means that the region is one of only six council areas in Scotland where more than half of the household waste is recycled and diverted from landfill.

more as we aim to live more sustainably. “The significant drop in the environmental impact of our waste is a great reminder of the vital importance of recycling. “By recycling more and reducing our waste we are affecting climate change. Every person can do their bit and local residents

can help by putting things in their bins appropriately and recycling where possible.

TRIBUTE NIGHT

“We still have a way to go to meet the Scottish Government’s target of recycling 70 per cent of our waste by 2025, but we are on the right track.” For local support and advice about recycling call 0300 123 4510. Other information can be found through national programmes such as Love Food, Hate Waste and the National Reuse Helpline.

In addition, the amount of waste generated in East Dunbartonshire decreased by almost 5,000 tonnes, further reducing a carbon impact of waste by almost 15 per cent yearon-year.

A night of music celebrating the legendary singer and musician David Bowie comes to Milngavie this month. Spiders on Mars is the UK's leading Bowie tribute band and they will be at F Pizza, on Stewart Street, on November 9 from 7.30pm to 1am. The audience will enjoy a full band with a set list of Bowie’s classics songs. A DJ will play music associated with the eras before and after the tribute band. Tickets priced at £15 (plus service charge) are likely to sell out fast.

Councillor Susan Murray, Vice Convener of the Place, Neighbourhood & Corporate Assets Committee, said: “This is tremendous news and it is great to see our residents’ commitment to reducing waste and recycling

TRANSFORMATIONS

Here’s what some of our customers had to say about our work: “We had our shower room completely refurbished and are delighted with the finished product. It was very clear from start to finish that Stephen is passionate about his job, the quality of workmanship is first class and we have no hesitation in recommending this company. We would definitely use them again.” Mr and Mrs Q (Helensburgh)
