A keen Munro bagger took a group of walkers on an exciting ridge hike this summer as part of a University of Glasgow charity fund-raiser. Romy set for Miss Worlds The Milngavie-born Miss Scotland winner, Romy McCahill, says she is looking forward to taking part in the Miss World competition next month. Romy, 23, was crowned Miss Scotland in August at a Glasgow event after beating 14 other competition to the title. She was awarded her accolade by last year’s winner Lucy Kerr at a ceremony also attended by guests, X Factor star Emily Middlemass and TV presenter Jennifer Reoch. Romy was also crowned Miss Earth Scotland three years ago and travelled to the world final, where she took a place in the top eight. Now Romy is preparing to represent Scotland at the Miss

Alzheimer’s is poignant for Romy because her gran, Iris, suffered for many years before she passed away last year. She said: “For over half of my life, my gran suffered from Alzheimer’s. To watch someone you love slowly deteriorating into a small frail woman who doesn't know who you are, and doesn’t know where she is, is extremely tough. This is a major reason why I am a committed fundraiser for Alzheimer Scotland.” Romy also teaches piano at 'Art at The Grange' in Milngavie and plays piano professionally. hilaRy’s loCh Relay sWim A local mum-of-two has completed a relay swim of the largest area of freshwater in Britain to raise funds for a cancer charity. Hilary Glen, of Bearsden, was part of the team of swimmers – some not even wearing wetsuits – who swam the length of Loch Lomond for Beatson Cancer Charity. The 12 brave swimmers set off at 6am from Ardlui with the overall aim of swimming 39km to the Maid of the Loch beach at the south end of the loch. They were supported in RIB boats by Robert Hamilton of Vigour Events. Hilary, a consultant medical oncologist at the Beatson, said: “The weather conditions were dreadful with torrential rain most of the day. Everything in the two boats ended up soaked through and most of us were drenched before we even got in the water. “We were all on the boats for somewhere between fi ve to

Our fi nal swimmer set off into the dusk and it was very atmospheric. We could all hear the shouts and whoops of encouragement of our familes and friends who had gathered at the beach to cheer us home. We fi nally arrived 14.5 hours after setting off.

The team has raised more than ÂŁ6,000 for Beatson Cancer Charity. This is the second annual swimming event. Last year, an idea devised by Derek Grose, consultant clinical oncologist at the Beatson, saw a team do a sponsored swim of 22km. Hilary said: “Last year’s swim was the start of what now seems to be an annual event. Finsbay manager Brendan Quinn said: “As a team, we are all immensely proud of the achievement, especially up against the calibre of venues that were shortlisted.

“As a fl edgling business, it can be tough to keep a regular trade and hope to grow. We have managed to achieve growth and have kept a regular crowd coming at weekends with live music offerings.

Cathy is baCk in ‘steps’ A teacher has returned to the locale where she set up her first fun and original musical classes for youngsters – and is once again teaching. Cathy McCallum, pictured above centre, launched Musical Steps in Milngavie in 2002 after having her first child. As a music graduate and primary teacher, she wanted to create classes with a blend of music, education and fun. The result was Musical Steps, for children aged from four months, which include a blend of back-tobasics songs, percussion playing, musical games, movement and listening to give youngsters and their parents or carers the ideas and confidence to make music together.

The classes have since been rolled out across the UK and into Europe with some 20 teachers licensed to lead Musical Steps. After her second son was born, Cathy moved with her family to Fife and left another teacher in charge of Musical Steps in Milngavie. Now she has moved back to the area and she has taken up the helm again.

all started. It has been wonderful to see the Musical Steps concept growing and developing across the UK and overseas. “Music has been shown to be one of the most powerful ways of helping children develop emotionally, socially and neurologically – and the earlier you start the better. “Musical Steps also gives youngsters an excellent preparation for going on to learn a musical instrument.”

To find out more about Musical Cathy says: “I'm delighted to have Steps and to book a place, see returned to the Milngavie classes www.musicalsteps.co.uk, call 07787 988860 or email after a break of more than 10 cathy@musicalsteps.co.uk. years – and to be back where it

Milngavie Music Club celebrates its 75th anniversary this season with an exciting opening concert performed by an acclaimed violinist.

Over 20 years experience so call today for FREE advice and quotation

On Friday October 13, the club welcomes one of Britain’s bestloved classical musicians, Tasmin Little, to Cairns Church, Milngavie. The violinist has played in all the great concert halls of the world and is a highly successful recording artist.

AF PLUMBING AND TILING

Tasmin’s evening of violin playing is intriguingly entitled “The Naked Violin. Milngavie Music Club president Hugh Macdonald says: “We are delighted to have Tasmin at our special opening concert and we are looking forward to her showcasing her amazing virtuosity on the violin, with no accompaniment.

NO JOB TOO SMALL

“She will also be talking about the music and her career. Tasmin will introduce great violin classics by Bach and Ysaye and she will play brilliantly colourful pieces by Albeniz, Panufnik and others. It will be a real treat.

In celebration of this month’s International Older Adults Day, a Bearsden initiative is inviting more people to discover a new Wow Factor. Pasna Sallis, a Bearsden occupational therapist, has created a social enterprise community called the Weekday Wow Factor. The meet-up group encourages people in their later years to “rediscover their inner child and meet new people”. Participants have so far enjoyed a variety of weekly outings including canoeing, zip slides, cycling and a speedboat trip. Pasna says: “Many seniors in our communities are revolutionising what it means to grow older and

you just have to look around you to see so many active seniors. This is what I like to call the ‘generation of agelessness’. “Yet while there are many older people who want to try exciting adventures and activities, a lot of what is on offer in organised leisure facilities seems oldfashioned. “That is why I have set up the Weekday Wow Factor to give opportunities for senior adults to engage in exciting, fun and adventurous leisure pursuits.”

Pasna reveals there are many benefits to enjoying an active life as you grow older. She says: “Sustaining our health holistically in the domains of physical, mental, cognitive, social and spiritual realm should be a priority. “As we mark International Older Adults Day on October 1 I would like to call out for more people to come along and give the Weekday Wow Factor a try. So far we have had a lot of fun including grandparents hanging out with their grandchildren at the hottest nightclub, a zip slide through a forest at Aberfoyle, canoeing on the canal at Glasgow and a speedboat outing on the River Clyde.” See www.facebook.com/ weekdaywowfactor/

ChurCh WalkS aRt sale foR suZy fund fOr all friends Tony Erskine and John. They played on and off over the years and in 2000 they were asked to support a charity concert for The Suzy Fund. The concert was recorded and they made a CD.

The Art for Life sale takes place this month in aid of The Suzy Fund

A long-standing charity fund, with poignant connections to the community, is hosting an art and crafts sale in Milngavie this month.

The New Kilpatrick Church Ramblers group will be enjoying the autumnal countryside this month with four planned walks. The first walk on Tuesday October 3 is a moderately easy walk of Knock Hill in Largs, Ayrhsire. On Saturday October 14, the group will take a more strenuous hike to the 655m summit of Beinn Reithe in the Arrochar Alps, which is part of the Argyll Forest Park. Two more moderate graded walks are on Tuesday walk the 24th to Cathkin Braes and Carmunnock Heritage Trail and on Saturday 28th to Loch of the Lowes, Dunkeld. The Art for Life sale of “affordable art and crafts” is in aid of The Suzy Fund and takes place at St Joseph’s Church Hall on Saturday October 28. The Suzy Fund was founded in 1975 by Brian Hazell in response to an article in a newspaper about a famine in Ethiopia. An image showed a young girl dying on a rubbish dump while searching for food. Brian named the girl Suzy and vowed that he would do what he could to make sure other children like her did not go hungry.

Some four decades on, The Suzy Fund has raised £900,000 to support a feeding station in Addis Ababa that provides daily meals for those in need.

“After that, every year, The Healys and their families played and sold CDs in different places in aid of the charity. Then, in 2008, they launched the fi rst Art for Life exhibition.

The Milngavie sale is being organised by Dorothy Parkin, whose late husband Erne – known as Mr Milngavie for his enthusiastic community events organisation – was a supporter of The Suzy Fund.

“Erne died in 2009 but the families have continued to raise funds through Art for Life and it is Tony’s eclectic range of paintings, screen prints, pen and ink drawings, driftwood and cards that form the main part of the exhibition.”

Dorothy says: “Erne was part of the Healys folk band, which formed in the 1960s with two

MISTED DOUBLE GLAZED UNITS REPLACED

This month: Organ Donation There are a number of ways a person can express their wishes in relation to organ donation following death. There is an NHS Organ Donor Register, which can be accessed online, and some people carry an organ donation card making their views explicitly clear. Simply telling someone what you would want to happen to your body following death is also sufficient. The law surrounding organ donation has been developed in such a way so as to ensure a person’s wishes are carried out. Therefore, a clear expression of your wishes to be an organ donor is taken as

authorisation for the hospital to be able to use your organs. Hospitals have a member of staff called a transplant co-ordinator and if there are no clear wishes expressed about organ donation then that individual will be required to speak to the deceased’s family as soon as practicably possible. It is the nearest relative to the deceased who will be asked to make a decision about organ donation and their instructions should be based on what they think their relatives views were. If you have a clear view, take the time to discuss it with family or put your name on the donor register.

October 2017 | What's Up Doc?

DOuGIe MaCleaN What's Up Doc? plaYS MIlNGaVIe with Dr Nick Dunn This month: a HiDDen PrOBleM...

Milngavie Town Hall plays host to the international singer songwriter Dougie MacLean, this month. The date is part of his 2017 tour in the UK and America and has been rescheduled after cancellation in August. Dougie, who is famed for the song Caledonia, is presented by Milngavie Folk Club and plays on Friday October 20. Doors open at 7.30pm. Dougie has built an international reputation as a songwriter, composer and performer. This talent has taken his performance to concerts and festivals all over the world and to the stages of Carnegie Hall in New York, London’s Festival Theatre and the Sydney Opera House.

Other appearances of note include sharing the stage with Lou Reed and Eddi Reader in the grounds of Culzean Castle at the Burns and A’ That festival, featuring on the BBC Hogmanay programme from Edinburgh Castle with James Taylor and sharing the bill with the legendary Mavis Staples at the Royal Concert Hall in Glasgow. Tickets for the Milngavie performance are £20 from tickets. jmsconcerts.co.uk The support on the night is The Friel Sisters, a traditional Irish and music song group from Glasgow-based sisters Anna, Sheila and Clare Friel.

Head and neck cancer is on the increase. It is half as common as lung cancer, but twice that of cervical cancer. It refers to tumours in the head or neck region, except the eyes, brain, ears or gullet. There are more than 30 areas within the head and neck where it can start. There were more than 150,000 new patients diagnosed in Europe in 2012, which is the equivalent to the Olympic stadium in London being filled with people almost twice over. Despite this, people often wait too long to see the doctor, limiting the benefit of treatments. However patients diagnosed early have an 80-90% survival rate.

It is most common in people over 40, and affects men more than women. Smoking increases the risk by 15 times and drinking more than 3 units of alcohol daily also significantly increases the risk. Recently it has been found that exposure to human papilloma virus increases risk in younger people. If people have just one of these symptoms for three weeks then they they should see their GP: Mouth ulcers, throat pain, swallowing problems, neck lump, persistent bleeding from one side of the nose or hoarseness. Check the website “makesensecampaign.eu for more information and make an appointment with your GP if you have concerns!

Arnold Clark's Milngavie car park plays host to the weekly car-boot sale, which has raised £3000 for the White Lily Fund

A weekly car boot sale in Milngavie is celebrating a very successful year so far. In less than six months, proceeds from the sale, which takes place every Sunday morning at Arnold Clark’s Milngavie car park, has seen a donation of £3000 to local charity, the White Lily Fund. Ralph Halley set up the sale more than 20 years ago after his wife Fiona died from cancer. He is still a keen promoter of the regular sale, which is now run by Chris and Mary Pringle.

“Over the 20 years we have raised a lot of money for cancer charities and many local good causes. “Since March we have been able to donate several thousand pounds to the While Lily Fund, which raises money to fi ght cancer in the west of Scotland.”

The Milngavie Car Boot Sale takes place on Sundays from 7am to 11.45am. The cost for a selling Ralph says: “It is great to see how pitch is: Car £10, small van £12 popular the sale has been this year and large van £15. and we have enjoyed some fi ne weather, which has been good for See www.facebook.com/ encouraging more people to come Milngaviecharitycarbootsale2016 along to sell goods. for further details.

We only tend to buy care once in our lives. But, when it comes to funding this care it can be difficult to navigate the options that are available. In 2013 legislation was passed in Scotland allowing care recipients to directly choose from whom their care could be provided. This means that once a person has been assessed to receive free personal care at home by their local Council then they have a number of options available to them. Under this legislation there are 4 options: Option 1 – The council pays you the money directly and you can spend this money with a private provider, such as Home Instead, to deliver a personalised care package.

Option 2 – You choose the support and care provider and the Council will pay on your behalf Option 3 – The traditional form of care delivery whereby the Council will provide the support directly Option 4 – a combination of the above. Increasingly people are taking control of their own care packages and choosing to go down the personalised route. This puts clients in the driving seat allowing them to have care delivered to them at a time that suits them and by carers who are matched to them. At Home Instead Senior Care we have produced a Home Care Funding Fact Sheet. If you’d like a copy or would like to discuss your options for funding care please call us on 0141 249 0574.

The group behind Mugdock Makkers Art and Craft Gallery are celebrating their 10th anniversary with a charity sale this month. On the weekend of October 6 to 8, the gallery located in Mugdock Country Park courtyard will donate 50% of sales of clearly marked arts and crafts works to a local charity, Playlist for Life, which helps people with dementia connect with their loved ones and families through personal music.

Lucy Jackson, from Mugdock Makkers, says: “We wanted to give something back to the local community as they have been supporting us and buying gifts from us for a decade. Their support means we can keep our doors open.” The Makkers was started by a group of artists and crafters with

November is the group’s official anniversary month when they will be hosting their usual Christmas shopping day combined with a birthday party. Milngavie Community Development Trust is calling for residents to give voice to future projects and ideas for the local area. The Trust, which is now a registered charity, is holding its first AGM on October 26 at 7pm in the Fraser Centre and they would like residents to offer their views and opinions. Ruth Blakey, secretary of MCDT, says: “The meeting is open for everyone to come along and tell us what they think about current projects and future plans. This will help to steer the activities of the trust in the year ahead.” MCDT has created a Community Action Plan and this, along with a summary of

what the trust has achieved so far, can be seen on the website, www.milngaviedt.co.uk. Ruth says: “The most obvious achievements have been the revival of Milngavie Week, the Fair of Clubs and Societies, a new skatepark based on a design chosen by Milngavie’s young people and the consultation on improving Lennox Park with a growing space and allotments, which will soon have its own orchard. “We are now working with East Dunbartonshire Council officers,

the steering group of Milngavie Business Improvement District, Milngavie in Bloom, the Youth Centre and the Gavin’s Mill Trust on a number of projects. “At our AGM, there will be a chance for Milngavie residents to comment on progress so far and help with new ideas for what we should be planning to do next.” MCDT is also looking for people who are interested in contributing an hour or two each month in different areas of expertise, such as legal, financial, environmental, media or fundraising. Car seat check helpful

Parents who took part in an in-car safety clinic held in East Dunbartonshire found it to be useful. The council checks in Milngavie and Kirkintilloch were part of a Good Egg In Car Safety Campaign. Of the 60 child car seats inspected, only 18 (30%) were fitted correctly, and eight car seats had major faults. Some 70% of seats were incorrectly fitted or incompatible. The aim was to offer support and reassurance to parents, grandparents and carers. Mumof-two Ainsley McCrimmond, of Milngavie, said: “It was really helpful to have an expert check over the seats in my car and to get some good and advice.” See www.goodeggcarsafety.com

Double the markets

Several local crafts makers will be selling their beautiful creations at the two Milngavie Makers Markets this month. Hevvy Wool is owned by Heather Green, of Milngavie. She learned the traditional crafts of knitting, sewing and crocheting and after a long pause while she trained as a classical pianist, she re-discovered her old childhood love a few years ago. She makes and sells a range of products including bunting, bags, bowls and flowers using natural materials such as wool, silk and cotton. She will be selling her goods at the Makers Market, at Milngavie Town Hall, on October 7, from 11am to 4pm.

Sealy MacWheely, of Kirkintilloch, will be also be offering handspinning lessons, while The Beauty Apothecarist, from Blanefield, will be selling a range of pure, natural and organic beauty products. There will be many other craft makers from further afield, too. On October 28, the market takes place from 10.30am to 3.30pm, and will feature another two local crafts makers. Tiptoes is also based in Milngavie and owned by Margaret MacBain, who makes beautiful knitted products, many

of which have an animal theme. Bearsden-based Loved Up Stuff restores furniture and curiosities. Items include tables, chairs, bedroom furniture, desks and wardrobes. Another seller from the local area is Sally Walkinshaw, a ceramicist from Killearn. Milngavie Makers Market was set up by Jessica Stafford Cameron, a children’s book illustrator, last summer. She says: “We started as an indoor market for craft sellers one Saturday a month and we now have two markets in some months, such as October and December. It has been great to see the growth and demand for the markets.” See Facebook.com/ milngaviemakersmarket

Local author Julie D'Amour is delighted by the five-star reviews of her first novel, a poignant story of an Elephant @ The Party. The independently published book, which was developed in collaboration with a professional editor and designer is aimed at the Young Adult market, although it has been received by a wide age range so far. The reviews on Amazon highlight the combination of “beautiful writing”, “an imaginative story” and “gentle life lessons and wisdom”. The novel tells of 15-year-old Lucy McGregor, who doesn't like herself very much and wakes up as an elephant in a faerie world. She must learn to love herself as an elephant in order to become human again. Julie, who is originally from Milngavie and now living in

GOOD

COMPANY... At The Kitchen Depot, we have always prided ourselves in our family values, on always being prepared to do whatever it takes to ensure that our customers are treated exactly as we would like to be treated ourselves - with courtesy, consideration and professionalism.

But lest we ever become complacent, we actively encourage ongoing feedback - here's what Mr Lee Sanderson has to say:

"The most incredible thing about The Kitchen Depot has been your sky-high levels of customer service. Too often a company will promote customer service as a core value, only to reveal a hollow promise when they don't live up to it." Mr Sanderson continues: "My favourite retailer is John Lewis because I know that they will do whatever they can to put something right if it goes wrong. The Kitchen Depot has performed to the same high standard."

"To favourably compare a small family business to Britain's most respected retailer is not something that I do lightly but you are well worthy of the comparison." Well, thanks for that, Mr Sanderson - please excuse us while we blush with pride. When it comes to looking after our customers, The Kitchen Depot is never knowingly undersold.
