MUSICIAN RYAN HITS THE HIGH NOTE A teenage accordionist from Milngavie has made history twice over with his podium place at a prestigious international music contest. Ryan Corbett, 19, became the youngest person – and the first Scot – to make it on to the podium at the Harbin Summer International Accordion Art Week in China.

wonderful because the Russians have done so much for the development of the accordion, so we spent hours talking about the instrument and our different cultures.

Ryan was also the highest placed European participant after coming third in the Performer category.

“We were sharing stories about how we play and perform. I felt so at home with them and I’d like to meet them again.

He was competing against a line up of many high achieving accordionists, including undergraduate and postgraduate students. Ryan has been a student at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland’s Junior Conservatoire for four years. He also attended Douglas Academy and Craigdhu Primary School. He said: “There were accordion players from all over the world, including China, Russia, Serbia and there was me from Scotland. “The hotel where I stayed was full of Russian musicians. It was

It was a much bigger festival than I thought. The result is the latest milestone for Ryan, who started playing the accordion by teaching himself at the age of 11. At 14, he started lessons with Junior Conservatoire staff member, Djordje Gajic.

Djordje, who supported Ryan during his trip to China, said: “This is a fantastic achievement for Ryan and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Ryan is a very talented, hard-working and highly motivated student who never fails to impress me with his ability. Ryan is now studying for a Bachelor of Music degree at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. ‘WE RAN OUT OF PLACES’ people would want to join the Couch to 10k beginner sessions.

A local JogScotland group has been surprised and delighted by the high level of interest for a new “Couch to 10k” running programme.

“I’m guessing that we have pitched this at a good time of the year, at the end of summer, when a new school term starts or in the run up to Christmas. “Perhaps, it is also a result of the legacy of the European Championships, which may well have inspired people to get fitter or enjoy a new sport. Who knows?

An amazing 70 people applied for places in the JogScotland Milngavie beginner group – and in the end 55 were accepted. One of the coaches, Alison Paterson, said: “We would love to have places for all the applicants but we realised we needed to cap numbers because of the number of coaches and helpers we have available at the club. “We want to be able to help as many people as possible to achieve their goal of running 10k but we also want to give people a high quality experience.” Three core leaders and two additional helpers will run the new running group, which will meet every Thursday evening for 12 weeks. The group was launched in early September.

Alison Paterson, jog leader, jumps for joy!

Alison is not sure why there has been such a big uptake for this programme. She said: “I really didn’t anticipate that so many

JAN’S JOY AT DEBUT NOVEL A Milngavie writer who has long dreamed of seeing her books in print will finally become a published author this month. Jan McPeake’s novel Transference will launch at a special event at Waterstones book store on Byres Road in Glasgow on October 20 at 7.30pm.

my husband is watching the football. I carry around a notepad and a Dictaphone because my ideas come to me at the most random of times.

The story, which is based in Glasgow, tells of a governmentcreated terminal disease, PODD, which is formed to manipulate the population in a monetary driven attempt at social cleansing. Lauren and Sonya, best friends and neighbours, are plunged into the most brutal and unjustified conspiracy the world has ever witnessed.

“I am overjoyed to have been finally offered a publishing contract with FCM Publishing. After many rejections, someone has seen a potential in my writing.

Jan, who was born and raised in Drumchapel before moving to Milngavie, said: “Writing has always been my escape and I started writing poems when I was aged 11. “Since leaving school I’ve worked full time and I write whenever I have spare time, such as in lunch breaks, when my young son is in bed or when

Jan is now working on her second novel, Separation, and has written eight children's picture books that are so far unpublished. She said: “Writing is and always will be who I am and I’m excited

to see where this next chapter in my life will take me. Transference is available for preorder via Waterstones. To find out more about Jan and her book see www.janmcpeake.co.uk.

INVITE TO GIVE CURLING A TRY Iain Reekie, from BSCC, said: “Curling is a great sport for people of all abilities and fitness levels. It is challenging but also rewarding. We are a friendly club and we are keen to attract new members with our free taster sessions.”

Bearsden Ski Club Curling are hosting free curling sessions at intu Braehead Ice Rink

A local curling club hopes to attract new players to the sport with an open invitation to two free taster sessions this month. Bearsden Ski Club Curling (BSCC), which was founded 35 years ago, is hosting the events at intu Braehead Ice Rink, Glasgow, on Saturday October 27 at 10am or 12.10pm. The one-hour sessions will provide a coached introduction to the sport with a chance to learn the basic skills of sweeping and delivering the stones, as well as the rules.

All equipment is supplied, including brushes and sliders. Delivery sticks that allow stones to be delivered from a standing position or a wheelchair are available for people with mobility issues. Participants are advised to wear warm, loose fitting clothing and clean, flat, rubber-soled shoes – trainers are ideal – to change into for the curling.

The club was started by four members of Bearsden Ski Club after winning the 1983 Highland Pentathlon in Aviemore. Within the competition, there were several disciplines including running, skiing and “target curling” at which the team excelled. Iain said: “Bearsden Ski Club Curling section grew both in numbers and reputation. Over the years, we’ve won many inter-club challenges and Dunbartonshire competitions and we also have our own club leagues, which are keenly fought each year. “Recently, we’ve formed an association with the Bearsden Curling Club and added an interclub competition, The Bearsden Challenge, to our calendar. It would be great to see more people on the ice and part of our club.” Booking is essential. Email iain. reekie1@ntlworld.com or call 07961 310974 by October 13.

A group of carers from East Dunbartonshire are looking forward to setting sail with the Ocean Youth Trust Scotland this month. The trip around the west coast of Scotland takes place in the October school holidays and is organised by Carers Link, a Milngavie based charity that supports unpaid carers.

offers respite for people in caring roles – and gives them time to have fun. It is the first time we have brought different generations together to work and play.

The group will be a mix of five young carers, aged 16 to 25, and five adult carers, supported by two staff members from Carers Link.

“All of the sailors are carers who provide care or support to a family member or friend who might be struggling with disability, chronic illness, mental health problem, or substance misuse.”

A spokesperson said: “The sailing trip, which is the fourth voyage we have organised,

Ocean Youth Trust voyages inspire young people through the challenge of adventure under sail and provide a uniquely powerful and extremely effective environment for their personal development regardless of their backgrounds. The Trust’s crew and volunteers will be on hand to support the novice sailors with the aim of building self-confidence, encouraging leadership skills, developing problem solving skills, working as part of a team, gaining awareness of the environment and, most importantly, making friends. The idea of providing sailing opportunities for young carers originally came from one of the Carers Link’s trustees. The charity is always looking for new people to join the board and contribute ideas and skills. ‘THRILLING’ QUARTET OPENER Music fans are being encouraged to go along to “an exciting season opening concert” with “stunning young musicians” this month. Milngavie Music Club’s International Concert Series gets under way once again on Friday October 12 at Cairns Church with a performance by the acclaimed Vision String Quartet. The quartet from Germany has been taking the chamber music world by storm and has been described by one leading Frankfurt newspaper as “thrilling and electrifying”. Club president Hugh Macdonald said: “We are delighted to have the Vision String Quartet coming to perform this month at our opening concert of the season.

“Unusually, the quartet – with the obvious exception of the cellist – play standing and even more amazingly, they play everything from memory.

JIM’S BOOK OF RUN TRAILS A local runner has published a book of trail routes in a bid to encourage more people to explore the countryside around Milngavie. Jim McLarnon’s book, “Milngavie Trail Runs”, features 107km of running routes that all start and finish at the obelisk at the beginning of the West Highland Way. The book is for runners of all abilities, from those who are new to trail running to people who are already keen runners but want to discover new trails in the area. Jim, of Milngavie, said: “There are so many great routes to run locally that take you through a surprising range of landscapes, including forests, farmland, a country park, and past castles and alongside lochs and rivers. “Yet I am always surprised by the people who don’t know about

these trails, even those that have been in the area all their lives. I want to show runners of all abilities the great places to run so close to the popular West Highland Way.”

IS PUBLISHED BY: Community Advertiser Ltd 24-28 James Street, Helensburgh G84 8UH T: 0141 433 1526 E: info@thecommunitymagazine.co.uk

The book has a foreword written by Susie Allison, author of a popular book called Scottish Trail Running, and includes inspirational words from Dr Andrew Murray, the Scottish doctor, runner and author.

Jim, who is a member of Jog Scotland Milngavie, is keen to point out that the book is not about running hard training sessions but focused on enjoying the outdoors.

Milngavie Trail Runs is priced at £6.50 (extra for P&P) and can be purchased directly from Jim by email: jaymez007@hotmail. co.uk or through the Facebook page www.facebook.com/ Milngavietrails.

He said: “There are no times attached to any of the runs, just distances, because it’s not meant to be a race, but more an appreciation of what’s available without going too far from an urban environment.”

Mortgage Matters:

Is Now A Good Time to Assess Your Mortgage Needs?

Artificial Lawns

With the recent increase to the Base Rate and with the excellent mortgage deals currently on offer, now maybe a good time to reassess your mortgage needs Next to purchasing your home, choosing the right mortgage or remortgage is probably one of the most important decisions you will make.

Whether you’re uncertain about the choices available or if you are just looking for a better rate, it may make sense to take advice from a qualified mortgage advisor who understands the local market. Approaching your current lender or bank may not result in you obtaining the best mortgage deal because they generally only consider their own products. Making the wrong choice about your mortgage can result in you having to pay hundreds if not thousands of pounds more than you need to pay. This month: HEALTHIER HABITS Allander perfrom at Euro Championships

EURO FAME FOR LOCAL GYMNASTS Gymnasts from a local club were thrilled to perform in a Gymnastics Showcase during the European Championships – and make it on to a TV show. The 18 Allander Gymnastics Club members were selected by Scottish Gymnastics for the special event prior to the Gymnastics Men’s Finals earlier this summer. The 16 girls and two boys, aged from six years to 14 years, performed their display in front of 1,000 spectators. The display also featured on the STV evening news as part of a round-up of the European Championships events. Jane Mclaughlin, head coach at Allander Gymnastics Club, said: “It was a very special and magical experience for everyone involved.

“The gymnasts worked very hard on their routine throughout the summer holidays. “The families and coaches were very proud of them performing at such a big arena. “The gymnasts also had exclusive behind-the-scenes access at the championships. “It was a bonus that our display featured on the STV evening news, too.” Allander Gymnastics is a private club for children aged five to 16. It has been running very successfully since 1977. To find out more contact janemclaughlin95@ gmail.com

This October “Go Sober for October” and “Stoptober” are being promoted to encourage people to think about alcohol and smoking. Habits can be good as well as bad, and I have heard it said that a habit can be learned within 60 days or less! These campaigns help people take the first steps to changing habits around alcohol or smoking by asking them to commit to no more than 28 days – which can be a manageable timescale to imagine.

Westerton Tennis Club player Cameron Laird won a clutch of trophies after triumphing in no less than three championship matches. In fact, he won every category that he entered at the club’s annual tournament this year, including the men’s singles, men’s doubles and mixed doubles. Before receiving the trio of trophies at the annual prizegiving last month, Cameron said: “I am delighted to have won the men's singles for the first time. “It was also great to win the men's doubles with Ewan MacLeod and the mixed doubles with my sister Holly."

The club’s joint chairperson Jacqueline Gourlay also won two finals, ladies’ singles and ladies doubles with Yvonne Sondh. Jacqueline, who shares the chair post with another club member Suzanne Laird, also the mum of Cameron and Holly, said: “The club championships 2018 saw 40 members competing and it was a great success, despite some last minute tense matches. “We had some excellent matches on finals day and some well-

deserved winners. This was our second annual prize giving, which is a great opportunity to celebrate our champions' success." The club championships take place between June and August with finals day on August 25. Other prizes were awarded to Sandy Hyslop for ladies’ consolation and John Moore for men's consolation. The prize giving evening took place in September at Westerton Bowling Club. The tennis club has 112 members and they are always happy to welcome new players. There will be coached sessions over the winter. See clubspark.lta.org.uk/WestertonTC

PLAYERS MARK 20 YEARS OF DRAMA

Legal Matters with Gill Bowman BA LLB

This month: JUDICIAL REVIEW Judicial review is the mechanism used to ask the court to review decisions, acts or a failure to act by a public body, such as a local authority, or other official decision making bodies.

The Kilmardinny Players are preparing for their panto 'Aladdin'

A local amateur dramatics group is celebrating its 20th anniversary with a performance of the panto, Aladdin. Kilmardinny Players are inviting audiences to see the festive show at Kilmardinny House Arts Centre in Bearsden from Wednesday November 14 to Friday November 16 at 7.30pm and then on Saturday November 17 at 2pm.

James Barry’s version of Aladdin, including all the usual traditions of a good pantomime.

In the story, Aladdin falls for Princess Jasmine, but needs to find a fortune to convince her father of the match. He strikes lucky with a lamp and a Genie, but he has to contend with the wicked Abanazer.

In its current form, the group dates back to April 1998 when Ken Findell and Brian Hayward created the Kilmardinny Players. The first production, in January 1999, was Willy Russel's Stags and Hens.

It can only be used where all other effective remedies have been investigated and there is no other remedy available. The process is fundamentally concerned with the actual legality of official decision making and the process of how a decision was reached, as opposed to the substance of the decision itself. It is also concerned with the failings of a body to act within their obligations or duties.

t

Essentially, this means it is an entirely different remedy to that of an appeal, which is an application to examine the merits of a decision. An application for judicial review must be made within three months of the date on which the grounds giving rise to the application first become apparent. The court does have the power to extend this to a longer period of time if it considers it appropriate to do so. Unfortunately, even following a successful action for judicial review, the decision maker may be able to make the same decision again, so long as it does so in a lawful way and following the correct process.

Total Swimming Academies – with lessons available at Boclair Academy, Bearsden – was formed over 10 years ago by Olympic medallist and Chair of Swim Safe, Steve Parry. With around 1 in 2 children leaving primary school unable to swim in the UK, Steve’s mission was to create swimming opportunities for all children aged 3-11, resulting in happier, healthier and safer communities. Total Swimming prides itself on creating engaging lessons in a safe environment, so children can enjoy themselves while learning an essential life skill. Small class sizes, fully qualified teachers and online progression monitoring are just some of the ways in which Total Swimming make the Learn to Swim journey the best it can possibly be – ensuring the process is convenient for parents and fun for children.

Discussing the programme, Parry says: “Giving every child in the community the opportunity to Learn to Swim is something I am passionate about. Swimming is such a vital skill and should be made available to everyone, which is exactly what Total Swimming is achieving and continues to deliver. With the help of a fantastic team of truly talented teachers, we give a first class Learn to Swim journey that I’m proud to offer to our swimmers and their parents. The recent introduction of direct debit has made swimming lessons even more accessible, making payment easier and hassle free.” Book your free lesson today at Boclair Academy, Bearsden by emailing boclair@totalswimming.co.uk and quoting ‘TSA1018’ before 31st October.

MILNGAVIE TRIO BECOME MODERN APPRENTICES Three young people from Milngavie have won places on the latest Modern Apprentice scheme run by East Dunbartonshire Council. Holly Anderson and Joshua Brown will work and train in the area of Early Years, while Christopher Donnelly has gained a position with the Streetscene services team. The three join eight other Modern Apprenticeship Scheme recruits from Bishopbriggs, Lennoxtown and Twechar. They were chosen from a pool of more than 100 candidates to take up roles in Early Years, Streetscene Environmental and Roads & Civils. Holly, 17, said: “I feel extremely proud of myself and have a real sense of self-accomplishment for getting an apprenticeship with East Dunbartonshire Council. I have already been working at my nursery placement and have been enjoying every day there. I look forward to starting college and working on getting my qualifications.”

Joint Leader Councillor Andrew Polson said: “The scheme will open up excellent learning opportunities for the apprentices over the next two years. “Offering training, work experience and a wage, the programme is always very popular.” Local employers that are interested in starting a Modern Apprenticeship Programme can contact the council’s Skills for Learning, Life & Work Team on 0300 123 4510.

This month: STAY NOURISHED Statistics show that 50% of over 75s eat less food than they used to. Almost one-in-five over 75s haven’t eaten a meal with anyone for three months or longer, saying they have less desire to eat or don’t feel hungry when they are eating alone. Additionally, one fifth of over 75s (20%) are struggling to cook their own food and over a third (34%) admit regularly skipping meals (at least once a week), with nearly one-in ten doing so on a daily basis. Good nutrition is essential to help older people live well and the guidance we will be providing as part of the Stay Nourished campaign looks at all aspects of healthy eating, malnutrition, food hygiene, food preparation and cooking methods. As people age they experience changes to their sense of smell,

taste and vision, this combined with health issues and often living alone can all impact on their desire to eat. In light of this research, we have recently launched a ‘Stay Nourished’ campaign to help educate our local community about the importance of nutrition, how to spot malnutrition and dispel misconceptions around diet and appetite for our older generations. This knowledge will hopefully give families the confidence to talk openly to their elderly relatives about food and nutrition. We are also keen to deliver ‘Stay Nourished’ workshops to local businesses, groups and organisations and encourage people to get in touch with us to book a free session.

MAKEOVER FOR MEMORIALS Two local war memorials have been returned to their former glory in time for a special 100th anniversary Remembrance Day.

Campsie, Twechar, Baldernock, Auchinairn and Bishopbriggs. The council contributed another £39,010. Frances Moreton, director of the War Memorials Trust, said: “War memorials are a tangible connection to our shared past creating a link between the fallen and today.

The war memorials in Bearsden and Milngavie were the first in East Dunbartonshire to be treated to an overhaul thanks to a partnership between the War Memorials Trust and the council. The bronze statues have been cleaned, waxed and buffed, while the stone plinths have been cleaned and re-pointed. Following the restoration work, the memorials – one located at the corner of Roman Road and Drymen Road in Bearsden and the other in the Milngavie precinct near the Fraser Centre – will once again be the focus for local Remembrance Day events on November 11, which this year marks the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I.

“It is vital we ensure all our war memorials are in the best possible condition for their age and the charity is delighted to support this project.”

Other memorials in the region to benefit from grants totalling £117,030 from the Centenary Memorials Restoration Fund supported by Historic Environment Scotland and the Scottish Government include those in Kirkintilloch,

Councillor Susan Murray, Vice Convener of the Place, Neighbourhood & Corporate Assets Committee for EDC, said: “The work has dramatically improved the war memorials, ensuring they are fitting tributes to the residents of East Dunbartonshire who made the ultimate sacrifice when fighting for their country. These works were essential to ensure the war memorials are in the best possible condition for years to come.”

PLANS FOR NEW MFC GROWS TO 600 PLAYERS WAREHOUSE Milngavie Football Club is delighted by the continued popularity of football for all ages as it reports membership of almost 600. The former Homebase outlet in Milngavie, which closed last year, is set to be redeveloped. The warehouse is being refurbished by Town Centre Securities (TCS) and is likely to become two units. One unit will house an Aldi supermarket and the other a Home Bargains outlet. The property investment and development company are responsible for bringing Waitrose to the area. The plans, submitted to East Dunbartonshire Council, also include new pedestrian access to the site from Milngavie’s Main Street, as well as parking for bikes and charging spaces for electric cars. It’s claimed the plans will create up to 80 jobs.
