BID TO RAISE £25K FOR AUTISTIC THERAPY A locally based social enterprise that supports people on the autistic spectrum is hoping to raise £25,000 for an exciting new project.

Creatovators, which uses Lego-based therapy as part of its work, are raising funds for a VW campervan and Lego, allowing for more mobile sessions

Creatovators, which was founded in 2011 in Bearsden and Milngavie, uses innovative “Lego-based Therapy” as part of its work. This therapy has proven to be a fun way of helping children to play together, which is something that people on the autistic spectrum find very hard to do. Play is a vital part of children's development, bringing joy and teaching skills necessary for life. Now the not -for-profit enterprise is raising funds for a campervan that will be filled with Lego. This will allow for more mobile sessions. June Grindley (pictured), the founder of Creatovators said: “We really need the help of people to raise the £25,000 for the VW campervan and Lego. We want to make our therapy sessions more mobile so we can offer them to more people.

“We are asking for people to make donations, if they can, on our Go Fund Me site.”

Dunbartonshire Business Awards, works with people on the autistic spectrum and their families.

June set up Creatovators after retraining and completing an MSc in Autism.

The main services include running a monthly play scheme, doing oneto-one play sessions, running Legobased Therapy Sessions, organising Lego-based Therapy Trainings, organising bespoke trainings and offering consultations.

She says: “I am the founder, director and the autism practitioner in the organisation. “I started the enterprise after my son was diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome when he was aged four and I then discovered there wasn’t much for families in our position at the time. “I was one of the first to bring Lego-based Therapy to Scotland after researching it as part of my MSc.” June’s brother is also on the autistic spectrum. The small social enterprise, which was a finalist in the East

Creatovators has completed local training with Tesco Milngavie and Clyde Arrows. You can donate for the campervan and Lego cause at www.gofundme.com/f/help-usto-help-kids-with-autism. To find out more about Creatovators see www. creatovators.com, emailinfo@ creatovators.com or call: 07981 656184.

A local youth orchestra has bid a fond farewell to a much-loved conductor – and is excited to welcome a new conductor to the team. Bearsden & Milngavie Youth Orchestra said goodbye to Marj Partridge, who had been with the group for more than 20 years.  Violin teacher Yvonne Bryson now takes up the baton. Tamara Kennedy, of BMYO, said: “Yvonne is a former BMYO player and a well-known and much respected teacher.” Yvonne will be supported by Jenny McEwan, who is a student at Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (RCS) and who has been a member of the BMYO family since a young age.

Another new member of the team is Lucy Reid, another violin teacher with experience of playing professionally. Lucy will help the young players to explore and experience small group playing, such as quartets. Tamara Kennedy, of BMYO, said: “The small group playing is not widely available to children of this age so we are delighted to be able to offer this thanks to Lucy.” The thriving youth orchestra is aimed at children aged eight to 18 years. There are now five  sections. The String Orchestra is for children from Primary 4 age, who have

A wind band is for beginners up to Grade 5 and Chamber Strings is for children who have achieved grade 3 to grade 5. The Symphony Orchestra is for musicians above grade 5. A new Percussion Ensemble, formed last year by BMYO member Scott Vassie, who was only in S5, will continue now he is at RCS studying full-time.   Tamara said: “Each group caters for different abilities so that our players can experience the fun of playing their instruments in a group from an early stage.” BMYO meet at Douglas Academy on Thursdays from 7pm to 8.30pm during term time. CALL TO GIVE TO BEAUTY BANK Amina’s voluntary work includes personal self-care and skin care as well as a range of holistic treatments. She said: “Unfortunately, I know from personal experience what it is like to have nothing in life, not even the basics required for personal care, because I have been a victim of domestic abuse in the past.

The owner of a local beauty clinic is calling for people to donate unwanted and unused toiletries to support women in need. Amina Hart, who owns Chic Clinique in Milngavie, has set up a “Beauty Bank” to help women who do not have the ability to finance or access personal care products, as well as beauty treatments. She is asking for donations of toiletries, such as toothpaste, soap, shampoo and moisturisers, as well as more luxury items, such

as shower gels, make-up and unwanted toiletry gift sets. Another part of the voluntary service offered by the Beauty Bank sees Amina giving free treatments to women who are the victims of domestic abuse. She works with Women’s Aid Charity, who identify those in need of a range of wellbeing treatments.

“I am lucky to be in a better position now and I have greatly valued the support of Women’s Aid. Now I want to give back something to support others. I have seen Beauty Banks in operation in London but I do not know of any in our local area. I want to change that.” Amina is asking for people to donate items (they must be unopened and unused) at Chic Clinique on Stewart Street. She added: “Beauty treatments and care can be so important for mental health and wellbeing and I hope that local people will support my Beauty Bank.” See www.facebook.com/ ChicCliniqueMilngavie and www.chicclinique.com.

LAUNCH OF NEW JOG GROUP A Bearsden mum and personal trainer has launched a new jogscotland session for beginners or returners to exercise in the area.

The new jogscotland Bearsden course will include running techniques, fun drills to improve posture, speed, agility and interval training to help participants to achieve personal goals. Fiona said: “I wanted to start a Jogscotland group as I strongly believe that being outdoors and active improves mental health and wellbeing.

Jogscotland Bearsden takes place on Mondays at 7pm at Garscube Sports Complex. The demand for places on the 10-week progressive plan, which is aimed at enabling participants to comfortably jog between 5km and 10km, has been huge.

“I meet personal training clients all the time who benefit mentally and physically from my one-to-one sessions and I wanted to reach a wider audience.

Fiona Maurer, who is the founder of Fit + Fabulous, said: “I had an amazing response to a call out for interest in a new jogscotland group. Places filled up very quickly for the first course but I hope to be able to establish a Friday session in the near future.”

“Running has always helped me cope with stressful situations. I believe that when I’m happy and healthy, I can process things better and make rational and positive decisions. “Jogscotland participants will be part of a successful social running network and they are sure to make new friends along the way.”

Jogscotland is Scotland’s recreational running network, and is part of scottish athletics.

Keep an eye on www. facebook.com/groups/ jogscotlandbearsden to find out more. A block of 10 weeks of sessions costs £30.

It is made up of hundreds of jogging groups across Scotland, including a successful group already established in Milngavie.

The book tells the story of Lara McDonald, who returns to her Scottish hometown after a Maltese love affair turns sour. Instead of looking for another PR position, she decides to follow her dream of baking. She impulsively takes the first job offered and finds herself working for local dragon, Kitty Walker, in her tearoom, True Brew. Lara's life is full of surprises, however, not the least being an

unlikely friendship forged with one of Kitty's elderly customers, the Laird Hugo Carmichael. Julie says: “It’s a story of love, family, hope and trust.” Julie’s first two novels, Rock My World and Hero or Zero, were published by a London-based digital publishers. She says: “I always had a burning ambition to write rom-com.” Buy the book for £12.99 from atlantic-books.co.uk/book/aroom-at-the-manor/ and other retailers. Also see: julieshackman. wordpress.com

The East Dunbartonshire Community Grants Scheme has £45,000 available to be distributed among organisations. The Esmé Quartet, from South Korea, will be performing in a new concert series organised by Milngavie Music Club

Milngavie Music Club launches the new concert series this month in international style with a young Berlin-based string quartet. The Esmé Quartet, who hail originally from South Korea, comprises of four young women who won the prestigious Wigmore Hall International Competition for string quartets in London last year. They got together as a quartet while studying in Cologne but had been friends for much

longer and say that their shared passion for music, the arts and life is what makes their performances so powerful. The Esmé Quartet is now in demand all over the world with residencies at several leading music festivals, including the Aix-en-Provence Festival in France.

The concert will be on October 11 at 7.30pm at Cairns Church. The winter series will include monthly Friday night concerts in the church until May. Following the closure of The Iron Chef in Milngavie, tickets will now be available from The Honeybee Bakery in Station Road or on the door on the night. They are priced £14; students £5; school pupils, free. Further details (including on season tickets) can be found at www.milngaviemusic.org.

£4K WALK FOR GAVIN’S MILL Photo © Josephine MacLeod

“The continuing growth and success of this social enterprise means that we are confident of the support of local people and this has been reflected in the generous sponsorship we have received for our walk. “We have also enjoyed ourselves enormously. We have met interesting people along the way and we are much fitter than we were a year ago.”

Sue Milne and Eve Gilmore, volunteers at Gavin's Mill Community Project, get piped through Milngavie as the end of their fund-raising walk of the West Highland Way

Two volunteers at the Gavin’s Mill Community Project have raised a total of £4000 on a sponsored walk of the West Highland Way. Sue Milne and Eve Gilmore hiked the 96-mile trail from Fort William to Milngavie last month as part of a bid to buy Gavin’s Mill for Milngavie. The West Highland Way Fundraising Walk is the latest in a series of cash generating activities as part of a bid to fully refurbish the historic mill. Sue and Eve arrived at Gavin’s Mill on September 7. They were accompanied by a group of supporters on the last leg from near Killearn to Milngavie and then piped by Norman MacLeod

on the final section through the village. Sue said: “Eve and I decided to embark on our West Highland Way adventure to give a boost to our fundraising activities. We cannot overstate the importance of purchasing Gavin’s Mill for the local community and transforming it into a centre that can be used by local people and community groups.

NEED IT DONE RIGHT?

The B-listed mill building dates back to the 17th century. It was a working mill until the 1950s, after which it fell into disrepair. Currently, the mill operates as a Fair Trade shop and café. Now the aim is to further develop the building to offer flexible space for use by local people and organisations. However, to do this the mill needs to be brought into the ownership of the trust. See www. totalgiving.co.uk/ mypage/gavinsmillwesthighlandwaywalk to donate.

KATE IS STARWOMAN

Late News

Photograph © Ed Smith

Thursday 10th A View from the Fridge

Kate Pearson, a Personal Trainer based in Milngavie, was the first female home in the STARMAN Night Triathlon

Milngavie personal trainer Kate Pearson was thrilled to be the winner in an adventurous night-time triathlon this summer. Kate, a Glasgow Triathlon Club member, was the first female home in the STARMAN Night Triathlon – and 13th overall. She completed the 1.2-mile loch swim, 56-mile road ride and 13.1-mile mountain run in seven hours, 45 minutes and 23 seconds. Her time placed her more than half an hour ahead of the second placed female. Another Scottish athlete, Chris Watson, from Crieff, was the overall winner, breaking his own record to win the STARMAN in 6:19:55.

STARMAN Night Triathlon, which is organised by True Grit Events, takes place in the Cairngorms after dark.

Kate, 38, who runs her own business Kate Pearson Personal Trainer, described the STARMAN 2019 as “absolutely epic”. She said: “Swimming under the bright moon and stars was magical despite the chop of the loch water. The Scottish weather that followed us around the pitch-black bike and run course was strangely comforting. “And we were treated to a rainbow over Loch Morlich, which I witnessed from the summit of Meall a Bhuachaille. That more than made up for the pain of the relentless hills.”

The swim is in Loch Morlich, while the bike course heads through Speyside. The run starts at Cairngorm Ski Centre and takes in the summits of Cairn Gorm and Meall a Bhuachaille. Now in its third year, the STARMAN sold out the 100 entries. One of the founders of True Grit Events, Caroline MacKechnie, said: “We’re delighted that this year’s event was another huge success. STARMAN is fast developing a cult status among adventure triathletes.” See starmannighttri.com and www.katepearsonpt.co.uk.

LEARN TO MARKET YOUR BUSINESS

What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn

This month: MAN-FLU IS REAL!

An event that focuses on how to market your business takes place this month. The East Dunbartonshire Women in Business session is at F-Loft, 16 Stewart Street in Milngavie on Tuesday October 29, from 6pm to 8.30pm. It is organised by Business Gateway East Dunbartonshire and aimed at women who already run their own business or are considering the idea of setting up a business in the area. As well as participating in a practical workshop on how marketing can help your business, attendees will benefit from the opportunity to network with each other. A “spotlight on” part of the session will focus on RLM Copywriting, which offers a professional copywriting service for individuals and businesses who do not have the time to

produce content themselves for their website, newsletter or other forms of written communication. RLM owner Rhonda Morris will give an insight into her company, as well as sharing some of her own experiences of running her own business. The Women in Business session is free to attend but you should register at www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/ east-dunbartonshire-women-inbusiness-tickets-72058313355. Business Gateway is a publicly funded service contributing to the economic well-being of Scotland by providing access to free business support services. See www.bgateway.com/localoffices/east-dunbartonshire/localsupport.

I sometimes worry that people under-estimate the effects of flu – even though we men are very brave about it! Seriously though, the influenza virus can sometimes do serious damage. Complications include pneumonia, worsening of heart or lung problems or diabetes, and even meningitis. Pregnant women can be at risk of premature labour or early miscarriage. We can all play a part in reducing its spread, and this includes vaccinations for all at-risk people, including those over 65, and with long term conditions. This month all Practices across the country will start vaccinating this large group

of people, please contact your doctors surgery to find out when their Flu Clinic is running, they will be expecting a big turnout! Find out if you need the vaccine from your Practice. Remember that doing simple things can also stop flu spreading. The virus can survive for 24 hrs outside the body, so regular handwashing, keeping surfaces such as door handles, tables and computer keyboards clean, and disposable tissues going straight in the bin are important. And remember, even simple flu leaves people feeling pretty rotten for a few days, so be sympathetic…even to the men!

Alzheimer’s Scotland

A thriving local Knit for Peace group is keen to encourage more people to come along to weekly meetings and join their worthy cause. The group meets weekly on Tuesdays or Wednesdays from 9.30am to 11.30am in the Community Room at Waitrose, Milngavie. Since July when it was launched, the group has flourished and donations of wool have been flooding in. Anne Gilmour, of Knit for Peace, says: “We are a group of happy knitters and crocheters that has been steadily growing. Some ladies come along each week while others, who have prior commitments, pop in to drop

off completed knitted items. Others call in to collect wool and patterns so that they can get on with knitting projects at home. “It's a very relaxed group and knitters knit what they are comfortable with. You do not need to be at any level as there is always a requirement for simple knitted squares, which are then sewn into blankets.” So far, the group has produced blankets, scarves, hats, socks, children's garments, cot blankets, baby clothing and twiddle muffs to donate to various charities.

The items are then distributed to outlets including hospitals, women’s refuges, refugee dropin centres, prisons, community groups, hospices, developing and war-torn countries. To find out more you can pop along to the meetings this month on Wednesdays October 2 and 9 and on Tuesdays October 15, 22 and 29. You can also email kfpbandm@ gmail.com to find out more.

GETTING SET FOR A FUN Wild weather, plunging temperatures and long, dark nights… autumn in Scotland is as different from the best days of the fickle summer as night from day. That is the “glass half empty” way of looking at a season which can be too readily assumed to be useful only for indoors activities based on evening studies, and risks missing some great opportunities for outdoor entertainment. You may have to wrap up warm, and not every day is going to be ideal for healthy walks or team sports, but in some ways – so long as you choose your times

and places carefully – the third quarter of the year can be every bit as interesting as the halcyon days of summer. While it’s true that during the summer holidays some agencies do their best to provide a variety of opportunities the plain fact is that most clubs, schools, etc, are either completely shut down or are operating on a limitedservice basis, while in autumn virtually every school, college and local club organisation

in the land has an active programme of indoor and often outdoor activities to offer. It is the season of “autumn gold”, when at its best, when attractions that are mobbed in the summer are suddenly largely free from tourists – the National Park, for example, still sees its fair share of visitor interest, but is much easier to enjoy during the less hectic days of autumn than in mid-summer, the season of mass participation festivals and crowds. By carefully selecting from the bewildering array of possibilities open to us in autumn it’s relatively easy to construct

an active and rewarding programme that allows you to socialise, study indoors or get out into the countryside – perhaps all in the same week. The trick is to organise your time in such a way that you always have a Plan B if the weather makes outdoor activities seem more trouble than they are worth. That way you can shelve one idea and switch seamlessly to an indoors alternative, rather than just “see what’s on the telly” and lose what could have been an interesting spell doing something truly entertaining or productive.

An autumn spent almost exclusively indoors is going to be pretty dull, and it’s worth taking the trouble to plan at least some events that will get you out and about on “the good days” – which are usually more plentiful than perhaps often supposed. If that means a game of floodlit five a side football, or a simple walk through a beautiful landscape close to home, it has to be better than seemingly endless months of waiting for supposedly ideal weather to arrive. If you hit the archetypal wet and windy night there are plenty of resources for swimmers, sports

fans, runners and the rest to release pent up energy that might otherwise be dissipated by dreary nights in front of the box. The advertisements on these pages are a great place to start for inspiration – if one idea does not appeal, another will possibly intrigue. Towards Christmas it’s a different scene altogether, with most people increasingly preoccupied with preparations for the festive break, while by contrast autumn is perhaps the most active season for club activities – indoors or outdoors.

A Bearden-based cat rescue charity is hosting an annual photographic show. The Catflap event will take place across the city at Giffnock United Reformed Church, on Fenwick Road, on Saturday November 9, from 11am to 3pm.

The cat rehoming charity Catflap was founded 22 years ago and operates from a small rescue shelter in Bearsden, as well as having foster homes across Glasgow. Find out more at Catflap on Facebook.

This month: MATRIMONIAL PROPERTY A large part of the role of a family solicitor is guiding clients through the separation process and advising about financial provision upon divorce. In Scotland matrimonial assets are divided fairly between the parties so it is important that there is a clear understanding as to what matrimonial assets are. Matrimonial Property is defined in s10 of the Family Law (Scotland) Act 1985 and includes all of the property belonging to the parties, or either of them at the relevant date, being the date of separation, which was acquired by them either: Before the marriage for use by them as a family home or as furniture or plenishings for that home; or

During the marriage but before the date of separation. There are of course some exceptions to these rules. Gifts or inheritance received by one party are expressly excluded as is property acquired by either individual before the marriage, unless, as already stated, it was acquired with the intention that it be for family use. An example of this would be a home that was bought by one person before the marriage but was intended to be the family and ultimately the matrimonial home. It is not always a clear cut process and it is important to seek legal advice when considering financial division upon divorce.

For every time, there is a season… …for every season, there is an adventure.

This month: AND COMPANIONSHIP Did you know... • Today, over two million people aged 75 and over are living on their own in the UK. • Feeling lonely can have a fatal impact on your mental and physical health. • Research shows a lack of social interaction could be as bad for you as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. • A lack of social stimulation is harmful for people living with dementia. Exaggerating the impact of the condition, leading to depression and encouraging withdrawnness. • Top triggers for loneliness include – being reminded of

someone they miss, lonely on special occasions - Christmas and birthdays and housebound due to ill health/poor mobility. Today as we connect with our community, it is still sad to see that so many elderly people don’t expect the feelings of loneliness to go away and think these are out of their control. Home Instead Senior Care know that by taking small steps it is possible to reduce these feelings. Come be part of our ‘Family’ at our next Companionship Café... Contact us today for more information on how you too can join us or support our battle with loneliness.

A spokesperson for the group said: “The UK’s nuclear submarines have glided silently up and down the Clyde for 50 years. The subs, based at Faslane, each carry up to five warheads, every one of which is six times as powerful as the Hiroshima bomb. “We now think there are some good reasons to talk

about Trident, including the unravelling of treaties that have limited development of nuclear weapons, the accidents in Russia this year and the fact that Brexit has brought Trident back to centre stage as the SNP are now committed to removing the nuclear deterrent from an independent Scotland.” The two-part event will hear from – and question – prominent politicians and church representatives about their views on Trident. Contact: John Desmond at jondes2015@gmail.com or on 0141 942 2252 for further details about the event.

SUPPORT GROWS FOR LIBRARY Niki Logan, co-convener of SWeL, believes this year has been very positive for the library. She said: “Although we’re still facing closure and we must now await the results of a public consultation by EDC about the future of our library, the overall story has been one of success. The library has seen a groundswell of local support.

A local library has been delighted by the response and support from the community in the on-going campaign to keep the facility open. Westerton Library was ear-marked last year as one of three small libraries in East Dunbartonshire to be closed as part of a cost-saving programme. The library was later given a year’s stay of execution and is now the subject of a public consultation procedure. As a result of the threat, a “hugely attended public meeting to discuss saving the library led to the formation of a Supporters of Westerton Library

(SWeL) committee. It is only the second formerly constituted “friends of a library group in Scotland. Since then, a host of new events have been launched at the library including “Community Talks on Monday nights a fortnightly autumn programme, which starts this month. Furthermore, volunteers have organised a Lego club, book readings and groups for toddlers.

“There is a lot more going on including lots of library events and we hope that people will continue to visit and use this vital facility. We believe the library should stay open for the benefit of the community.â€? Niki also called for people to support a SWeL fundraiser this month. On Friday October 4, Westerton Hall will be the venue for the Great Westerton Clothes Swap. Tickets cost ÂŁ10 from the library. Niki added: “People can take further action to help to save the library by registering and withdrawing books, attending events and staying up to date with the campaign.â€? See Supporters of Westerton Library on Facebook.

HAVE YOUR SAY ON TRANSPORT Local people have another chance to give their opinion on plans for active travel, public transport, roads and parking. East Dunbartonshire Council is seeking views on the Draft Local Transport Strategy 2020-2025 until November 12. You can access the draft strategy, background and environmental report – and fill out an online survey – at www.eastdunbarton. gov.uk/draft-local-transportstrategy. Copies of the strategy and paper response forms are also available at community hubs and libraries. Initial consultation on the Transport Options Report took place during winter 18/19. The feedback helped to inform the Draft Local Transport Strategy.
