stuart’s aMaZInG sIX-year run Extraordinary local runner Stuart Macfarlane has run every day for six years – and has now completed an incredible 17,600 miles.

Stuart enjoys running early morning or late evening when it's quiet. He said: “I often head to local hills after 10pm. Then it’s just me running, the bats, a few deer and the odd owl for company. “I try to plan in races as well but on the weeks that I do not have a race I have a long running day usually covering 30 miles or more. I like to run out and back to a café or hotel.

The retired business analyst and publisher at www.tattiebogle.com started his daily running spree, nicknamed Runstreak, on July 30, 2011, and has never missed a day since. Stuart, 64, of Bearsden, said: “The daily running wasn’t planned to start with. I’d run a few days in a row, then I did the Tour of Clydeside, which is fi ve races on consecutive days. It grew from there.

Stuart MacFarlane has run every day for the past six years.

“There was no target at the start. I just kept going to see what happened. And I am still running every day.”

He said: “I would say to myself it’s too wet, hot, early, late, or al kinds of excuses. As a result there would be days I did not run and I would regret that.

Stuart, who is also an author of some 20 books, reveals that before “Runstreak” he found it too easy to make excuses for not running.

“Now that I’ve no choice but to get out and run I fi nd I do not need the usual motivators. I just know that I will run each day because of Runstreak.”

daily run. I have also achieved personal best times at many race distances.” His personal bests include 5k, 10k, half marathon and ultra marathons. In some cases, he has beat times that he set 10 years ago. Poignantly, Stuart’s latest book is called A Marathon of Running Jokes and is available on Amazon or as an e-book.

“I also add in harder intensity runs such as hill running or speed work. I think this has helped to improve my times.”

He said: “I’ve a lot of time to think about my books while I am running. I do fi nd that when I am running I relax and have time to think with a clear head.”

Stuart, who is slim, is convinced that running is keeping him healthy. He said: “During the six years I have been running I have had nothing happen that would stop me doing my

Stuart hopes to keep up his Runstreak at least until the 10-year mark and he would like to complete a “virtual” loop of the Earth. “That might take another three years,” he said.

Have your say on care Ian Fraser, Chair of the HSCP, said that this presents a great opportunity for the community to shape services. He said: “Community participation is vital to the planning, design and delivery of health and social care in East Dunbartonshire – and who better to tell us how these services should be tailored than the people who use them?

Bearsden and Milngavie residents are being given the chance to have their say about local health and social care services. These views, alongside other opinions from people across East Dunbartonshire, will help to shape the region’s Health and Social Care Partnership’s (HSCP) Strategic Plan. This plan sets out how the organisation aims to help people and communities to live in good health for longer, as well as helping them to improve their own wellbeing.

Priorities for the plan will be identified by listening to what the local community – including service users, carers and their families – believe is important to them. The local public consultation will be held on Friday September 1, from 12.30pm to 4.30pm in Bearsden Burgh Hall. The event is open to the public and includes tea, coffee and a sandwich lunch for all participants.

“It is really important that the people who access these services help us to get it right. They can suggest changes or improvements that we may not have thought about. This is a fantastic opportunity for everyone to air their views.” Susan Manion, HSCP Chief Officer, added: “Health and social care are vital services and with budgets becoming increasingly challenging our goal is to make sure that service users and communities continue to receive high quality care that is tailored to meet needs.” If you are interested in attending the event email: anthony.craig@ggc.scot.nhs.uk

Shinty is an exciting game played in teams with a stick, called a caman, and a ball. While often compared to hockey, the two games have several important differences. In shinty, a player is allowed to play the ball in the air and is allowed to use both sides of the stick. The Milngavie & Bearsden Shinty Club has development squads for children in Primary 1 to Primary 3, P4 to P5 and P6 to P7. There is also a under-14 training session for older children in conjunction with other local shinty teams. The club meets at Auchenhowie Sports Club each Friday from 6:30pm until the end of October. It then moves to Douglas Academy for indoors training. Rob Murdoch, from the club, says: “We are a friendly and welcoming club and we are

The youngsters also compete in a Central Scotland league. The sport is played year-round and matches are held outdoors in the spring and summer and indoors in the winter.

The club was set up 20 years ago by parents and is still run by a parents’ committee. Glasgow Mid Argyll Shinty Club senior players give up their free time every week to provide training for M&B Shinty Club, alongside the club’s own development coaches.

Rob says: “Shinty is a massively fun sport for kids and it’s great for fi tness, hand-eye coordination and team work. We would really like to see more kids coming along to the club to give it a try.”

The Doors Open Day is on Saturday 9th September and it marks the 19th year that East Dunbartonshire has taken part in the popular Scottish-wide event. In 2017, the focus is on the Year of History, Heritage and Archaeology. Establishments that will open their doors to give free of charge access include The Glasgow Academy, which was formerly Atholl Preparatory School, and Douglas Academy, which opened in 2009.

A Railway Walk will examine how Milngavie Station developed from a smaller building, which still survives at its core, to the larger facility that many local people use today.

In Bearsden, St Andrew’s RC Church will be welcoming people through the doors as it celebrates its 50th anniversary year. Another church, New Kilpatrick Parish, will also take part in Open Doors Day. A favourite moorland path of local walkers has been treated to a much-need upgrade thanks to the Scottish Landfill Communities Fund. Several sections of the 2.4km path at the Scottish Wildlife Trust’s Loch Ardinning Reserve near Strathblane have been repaired after being affected by increased use and wet weather. A boardwalk, which has been built from recycled plastic, has also been installed to protect fragile habitats that can become boggy after heavy use. Earlier in 2017, a helicopter was called in to transport large amounts of stone and aggregate on to remote areas of the reserve. Sven Rasmussen, reserves manager at Scottish Wildlife

Trust said: “The moorland path at Loch Ardinning Wildlife Reserve takes visitors to the top of the reserve where they can enjoy stunning views of the Campsie Fells, Ben Lomond and Glasgow. “Around 15,000 people visit the reserve every year and thanks to this funding we’ve been able to improve the paths to allow increasing numbers of people to enjoy this special wild place.” The path upgrade has been funded through SLCF by a £49,595 grant from WREN’s FCC Community Action Fund,

£10,000 from Avondale Environmental and a generous donation from Dr Robert Ker, who gifted the reserve to SWT in the late1980s. Sophie Cade, grant manager at WREN, said: "We are always pleased to support projects delivering access to nature. I hope the local community and visitors alike will enjoy the improved paths on the reserve." See scottishwildlifetrust.org.uk/ reserve/loch-ardinning/

SconeBox includes a range of different flavoured scones, jams and tea or coffee for four people, as well as a baking utensil, recipes, napkins, entertainment tips and a surprise sweet treat.

The sibling owners of a Bearsden cafĂŠ have been overwhelmed by the success of an innovative scone delivery business enterprise.

The idea for Sconebox was sparked after the Boyle sisters Jennifer, Geraldine and Michelle, of CafĂŠ CrĂŠme in Bearsden A quick and easy way noticed that some of their older to keep your ice-cream nice and soft. Store the ice cream customers were unable to visit the shop due to poor health.

in a sealed freezer bag and the ice cream will remain nice and soft. No need to bend your spoon!

Earlier this summer, the trio launched the service to deliver scone tea party boxes. They had anticipated it having local demand but they have been surprised by the many requests

from further afield and from younger people.

The price for one box is ÂŁ15.95 per month, although customers can also take a longer subscription and receive personalised gift options.

Geraldine said: “Within months, Sconebox has caught on and the cafĂŠ is sending boxes as far away as America, Germany and Ireland. We also did a pop-up event at Princes Square in Glasgow and people were buying four or fi ve boxes at a time, which was lovely.

Geraldine said: “The feedback has been great and customers have been suggesting other things they would love to be included in the boxes. We plan to develop the service and offer different Sconebox products and not just subscription items."

“We are really taken aback by how popular it has become so

September 2017 | What's Up Doc?

with Dr Nick Dunn

This month: a BliSTerinG raSH!

Local children are being encouraged to take part in a heritage photographic competition. The Scottish Civic Trust's My Place Photography Competition 2018 is a Scotland-wide project for schools. It motivates school age youngsters to look at the heritage in the places where they live and, through the medium of photography, to develop an understanding of the things around them.

All entries to the My Place Photography Competition 2018 must be submitted by a teacher or group leader on behalf of young people. The winning photos will be displayed for the public to view. The Scottish Civic Trust project is supported by Historic Environment Scotland.

The My Place Photography Competition forms part of Scotland's contribution to the International Heritage Photographic Experience supported by the Council of Europe as part of Our Common “It is a great way to get to know Heritage initiative. See www.scottishcivictrust.org. your local heritage better and uk/about/my-place-photographyto have the chance to enter a competition Scottish competition.” A spokesperson for the project said: “We want to get more young people to explore their built environments in a creative way using photography as a means of investigation and creative expression.

Every year about 7,000 people in Scotland get shingles. It’s caused by a virus called Varicella Zoster, which causes chickenpox, but after recovery some virus survives and lies inactive in your body’s nervous system. If it later re-activates to cause shingles, it passes down a nerve to cause painful blisters on the skin, so the rash is contained within a “band” on one side of the body. GPs prescribe antiviral drugs, if caught within 3 days or sometimes a week of the rash appearing. These limit the spread of the rash and reduces the risk of “post-herpetic neuralgia” – pain after the rash which can last up to a year. This pain

affects about 1000 people per year and about 600 require hospital admission with complications of shingles. If your immune system has been weakened by age, stress, illness or certain medicines you are at more risk of developing shingles. The shingles vaccine protects by boosting immunity and is available to those most at risk, people aged 70 or more. It reduces the risk of shingles by about a third and it will be less severe even if you are affected. A good place to look for more information about vaccines is immunisationscotland.org.uk/ vaccines – well worth a look!

Have you ever wondered how to start your own business and what it would be like to run one?

Bearsden runner Nicola AdamsHendry triumphed in her second ultra race on the West Highland Way this year. Nicola (pictured left), from Garscube Harriers, came home first lady in the 42-mile Devil o’ the Highlands Footrace last month in a new personal best time of 6:28:16. It is her third win in this race. In April, she also won the 53-mile Highland Fling ultra race, which starts in Milngavie. The men’s winner of the Devil o’ the Highlands Footrace was Rob Sinclair (pictured right), of Aberdeenshire, who also won two other west Highland Way races this year, the Highland Fling and the 95-mile West Highland Way Race. A morning session run by Business Gateway East Dunbartonshire for women who want to start a business takes place at Boclair House in Bearsden on September 6. “Self-employment as a Career Option for Women” will offer advice and tips on how to start and run your own business. The session, from 9.30am to 12.30pm, also aims to build confidence and give motivation to succeed, as well as finding out what support is available locally. A spokesperson said: “Running your own business can seem like a challenging route to take, but

12:55:14

many women – including the facilitator who is running this workshop – have chosen it as a successful route to a career. “It can be a way to balance family priorities, as well as bringing the best of a woman’s skills and talents to their working life in a fulfilling way. “It can even be done on a parttime basis, with the right type of planning and support.” The session will be interactive and informal and offer an opportunity to meet other likeminded women. should not later be used in any future court action. Mediation can be utilised in any number of circumstances, including contract disputes, neighbour disputes or family matters. It is a voluntary process and will only take place if both parties agree to participate. (Although, there is such a thing as court appointed mediation). The reason for this is that it is recognised that mediation will only be successful if the parties come together willingly and with an open mind. If you are experiencing conflict with someone you may wish to speak to your solicitor for further information and investigate whether mediation would be appropriate for your situation.

The Supernaturals, featuring Bearsden's Derek McManus, live at MugStock

The Supernaturals guitarist Derek McManus describes playing at MugStock this summer as “quite strange but brilliant at the same time”. Derek, who grew up in Milngavie, remembers playing as a child in Mugdock Country Park, where the annual festival is now held. Two local gymnasts were delighted to win a gold and silver medal at this summer’s British Trampoline and Tumbling NDP Finals 2017. Boclair Academy pupil Lucy Kilgour, 15, and 10-year-old Milly Taylor, who attends Westerton Primary, won a silver and gold medal respectively at the finals in Telford, England. The pair, who are relative newcomers to the sport, were competing alongside five of their fellow gymnasts from Sapphire Gymnastics Club in Glasgow. In total, 22 gymnasts from seven Scottish clubs qualified for the

NDP Finals after competing in the NDP Regional Qualifiers. The Scottish gymnasts headed home with an impressive 14 medals including six golds, six silvers and two bronzes. The total is more than twice the number of medals won in 2016. All seven gymnasts from Sapphire Gymnastics Club medalled, with Milly winning gold in NDP level 4 age 9 to 10 class and Lucy winning silver medal in the NDP Level 4 13-plus age group. Other club winners were Emilly

G&G Bros.

A spokesperson for Sapphire Gymnastics Club said: “We are extremely proud of our tumble team. The club has only been tumbling for three years and we are amazed at the acceleration of our gymnasts.” Lucy’s mum Kim Kilgour said: “As a parent it is an unbelievable sense of pride to see your child’s hard work pay off. Lucy trains almost every day for long hours but she absolutely loves gymnastics and doesn’t miss training for anything.”

Increase in Higher standards

Senior Savvy with Suhail Rehman

This month: WORld Alzheimer's Month

POLISHING Pupils at East Dunbartonshire schools achieved more Highers and Advanced Highers this year. Results published by the SQA last month showed that among 5th year pupils, 77.9% obtained one or more Highers while 60.7% achieved three or more Highers. The number of S5 pupils achieving five or more Highers rose by 1.2% to 35.3%.

QUALITY KITCHEN FACELIFTS

The number of S6 pupils achieving Advanced Highers rose by almost 2% to 35.8% with 33.1% gaining three or more Highers. Across the region, 94.7% of S4 pupils achieved five or more National 4 passes while 66.8% obtained five or more passes at National 5.

September is World Alzheimer's Month. This is an international campaign to raise awareness and challenge the stigma that surrounds dementia. It’s hard to believe but 2 out of every 3 people globally believe there is little or no understanding of dementia in their countries. When a loved one starts displaying the symptoms of dementia it can be difficult to know who to turn to for help and advice. I recently went through this scenario with a close family member who had been displaying symptoms for some time. We decided it was time to get help and approached our local doctor. The first obstacle arose when our family member refused to acknowledge there was an issue and refused to seek help. We soon realised that without a Power of Attorney in place we were almost helpless. This was the first step we had to put in place. Then there was a merry go round with

social work, memory clinics, hospital tests and finally organising care and support for both our family member and his spouse. As professionals in the care sector we knew who to turn to and how to best get help. However not everybody is in this position especially busy professionals who have to juggle work and family commitments as well as ensuring the needs of their parents can be met. Luckily in East Dunbartonshire we have access to many resources that can help with dementia care. However trying to navigate these and getting various services to co-ordinate with each other can be frustrating and time consuming. At Home Instead Senior Care we have established relationships with support organisations in the local area. If you would like help or advice on any matter related to Alzheimer’s or dementia then do not hesitate to contact us on 0141 942 8684.

The band is not only a musical organisation, but it is also a first class way to introduce young people to the competitive world and to adopting social skills. “Practising together and playing in competitions can be a very levelling experience because everyone has to work together to achieve success.”

Milngavie Pipe Band is hoping to attract new pipers and drummers to play in their Grade 3 and Novice Juvenile bands. The historic band, which was officially formed in Milngavie in 1961, has enjoyed great success over the decades and they are always happy to welcome new members. There are currently openings for Juvenile players, which are youngsters up to the age of 17. The new pipers and drummers

would be tutored to the correct level for competitions. The Grade 3 level players should be of a suitable standard to allow them to compete although further tuition would be made available to those with the ability. PRESSURE WASHING

The founders of a local running group called RunSOCIAL are celebrating a successful first year of introducing people to the trails. RunSOCIAL, which launched in July 2016, aims to introduce runners to the fun of trails. The group meets every month in Mugdock Country Park and surrounding areas. Ryan Scott, who set up the group with his partner Jo Cowper, said: “We’ve been overwhelmed by the response to our RunSOCIALs in the fi rst year.”

Ryan and Jo, who are also the founders of TrailFest: Scotland’s Trailrunning Festival, limit the number of places on each of the runs to ensure a great running

experience for people of all abilities. To date, Run SOCIAL has facilitated 425 trailruns adventures, many of which were people running their first 5km, 10km, or even their first ever time running off-road.

“One of the most rewarding aspects of organising the social runs is helping people to achieve new things and push their own boundaries.” The community around the social runs continues to grow and the couple has plans to expand the RunSOCIAL programme. Jo said: “We hope to introduce new runs and formats over the next few months that will appeal to beginners and seasoned runners alike. We are looking forward to supporting more people to get active outdoors and experience the joy of running off-road.”

Ryan said: “We wanted to provide a route into trail running for those new to running and for those who didn’t have the confi dence to run off-road. Starting as a 5km led run, the RunSOCIALs proved so popular Details of the RunSOCIALs that each one now encompasses a can be found at 5km and a 10km run. www.trailfestscotland.com.

Milngavie FC pulled out all the stops to put on an inaugural football festival that has been described as a phenomenal success. The club invited a former professional footballer, SFA representatives and Miss Scotland to join in the fun earlier this summer. The event, which took place at the West of Scotland Rugby Club in Milngavie, boasted a special SFA Showcase for the football teams, as well as inflatables and an outdoor disco as off-field entertainments. A VIP tent welcomed former Motherwell star and St Johnstone, Burnley and Blackburn Rovers

manager, Owen Coyle, along with local councillors and event sponsors. The festival ran for the first time last year as a schools-only event and this year the club decided to increase the size and scale to mark the return of Milngavie Week and open it up to the general public. Club secretary Caroline Diaz reported that the event was a “phenomenal success”. She said: “There were 65 teams participating and 800 medals given out by Miss Scotland. In

addition, the weather was kind to us so that was a bonus.” The teams taking part included boys and girls, an over-50s group playing walking football and a disability group. Caroline added: “After a lot of hard work it was rewarding to host such a successful event. I want to say a huge thank you to all the coaches, parents, committee and volunteers for helping with the festival.” To find out more about joining or becoming a coach with Milngavie FC, which will celebrate its 13th anniversary this coming season, see www.milngaviefootballclub. co.uk or www.facebook.com/ milngaviefootballclub

A potential saving of several hundred pounds and NO initial cost

As a first time seller I would have struggled to find the required money for the Home Report but with the package on offer I was able to market straight away and managed to sell within only one week and achieved over the Home Report valuation.

This had been our family home for decades and we had not been used to buying and selling however Property Bureau have sold most of the homes in this area over the last few years and they were recommended by another neighbour they sold for. We sold within three weeks for over our asking price.

Having sold several properties over the years we recognised this is an excellent way of helping with sales costs. We must have saved over £500 in marketing costs and Property Bureau achieved a sale price which was over our expectations.

I had seen a property I liked and the thought of being able to market the flat with no initial costs was appealing. Property Bureau got my flat on the market within 24 hours of instruction and sold within one week which meant I managed to buy the property I wanted. Excellent service and would use again.

GOOD

COMPANY... At The Kitchen Depot, we have always prided ourselves in our family values, on always being prepared to do whatever it takes to ensure that our customers are treated exactly as we would like to be treated ourselves - with courtesy, consideration and professionalism.

But lest we ever become complacent, we actively encourage ongoing feedback - here's what Mr Lee Sanderson has to say:

"The most incredible thing about The Kitchen Depot has been your sky-high levels of customer service. Too often a company will promote customer service as a core value, only to reveal a hollow promise when they don't live up to it." Mr Sanderson continues: "My favourite retailer is John Lewis because I know that they will do whatever they can to put something right if it goes wrong. The Kitchen Depot has performed to the same high standard."

"To favourably compare a small family business to Britain's most respected retailer is not something that I do lightly but you are well worthy of the comparison." Well, thanks for that, Mr Sanderson - please excuse us while we blush with pride. When it comes to looking after our customers, The Kitchen Depot is never knowingly undersold.
