BOYS FUND-RAISE FOR ORPHAN PROJECT ÂŁ10. (Email botswanajuly2019@ gmail.com.) Also this month, the boys will be leaflet dropping for DS Interiors in return for sponsorship money. They are available for local paidfor jobs such as fence painting and cutting grass.

The seven young rugby players travelling to Mwandi, Zambia are (from left to right): Callum Morrans, Daniel McGarrie, Elliot Duff, Ronan McLaren, Mathew Crabbe, Tiaan Wright and Sean Burns

Seven young rugby players and four dads, all from Bearsden, are embarking on an ambitious volunteering project to support African orphans. The teenagers, who are friends from the West of Scotland Rugby Club and sixth year pupils at Bearsden Academy, are aiming towards a month-long trip to Botswana and Zambia next July. At the heart of the journey is a week’s stay with Home For AIDS Orphans located in the remote Zambian village of Mwandi. The not-for-profit organisation works with the community to improve the living conditions of vulnerable people, especially

children who have been orphaned by AIDS. More than 11 million African children are orphaned as a result of AIDS and over the last decade the orphan figures have risen from 3.2% to 32%. In Zambia alone there are 1.4 million orphans. Home for AIDS Orphans builds mud huts for families who are raising orphaned children. The sons-and-dads group in Bearsden include three

generations of the Wright family, granddad Roger, dad Jimmy, and son Tiaan Wright. Jimmy, who was born in Zambia and lived with his parents in Botswana, will act as lead for the trip. As part of this, the boys will volunteer with Home for AIDS Orphans, helping to build new huts, supporting the organisation and coaching the children in rugby. In order to fund the trip, the boys and their families are organising a series of fundraising events. On September 14, from 7pm to 10pm, a cinema night at Mugdock Theatre will present The Greatest Showman. Tickets are

Jimmy said: “This is a big project for all of us but we think it is worthwhile in many different ways. It will teach the boys about the plight of children in other countries, in this instance Botswana and Zambia, and will give them the chance to support people less fortunate than themselves. “The boys will be able to utilise their skills to work as a team, developed through rugby among other things, to fund-raise towards a common goal. “The trip will also be a oncein-a-lifetime opportunity to experience this amazing part of the world in a truly grassroots and non-commercial way. For further information, to request the boys for fundraising jobs, or to donate email botswanajuly2019@ gmail.com. Milngavie residents are invited to witness a “truly magnificent show” this month thanks to a special display of flowers. Milngavie in Bloom is organising the outdoor exhibition of bright yellow sunflowers on Friday and Saturday September 7 and 8. The sunflowers have been grown from 150 small plants taken home by local people and the group’s volunteers in May. Douglas Cameron, chair of Milngavie in Bloom, said: “With all the lovely sunshine we have had this summer we are hoping that everyone has successfully grown some beautiful sunflowers.

“The sunflowers will be on show throughout the precinct for everyone to enjoy.” The sunflowers can be left outside the Fraser Centre on Douglas Street and if anyone needs any help to carry the plants they can give Jenny a call on 0141 956 2616.

Milngavie's Douglas Academy is celebrating having the region's best SQA exam results

Milngavie’s secondary school, Douglas Academy, went to the top of the class last month with the region’s best SQA exam results. The results were also the best the school had achieved with 87 per cent of S5 pupils attaining at least one Higher (up eight per cent on 2017); 74 per cent of S5 pupils gaining three-plus Highers (up 15 per cent); and 52 per cent of S5 pupils attaining five-plus Highers (up 19 per cent) Across East Dunbartonshire’s eight secondary schools the exam results were described as a “continued good performance”. The results show sustained achievement with the numbers of pupils gaining National 5, Highers

and Advanced Highers holding steady or increasing from 2017. Some highlight statistics showed that the percentage of S4 pupils achieving five-plus SQA National 5 exams was up 69.4 per cent up from 66.8 per cent in 2017. S5 pupils achieving at least one Higher exams was up 78.9 per cent from 77.9 per cent. And S6 pupils attaining at least one Advanced Higher remained the same at 35.8 per cent. Education Convener, Councillor Jim Goodall, welcomed the results.

He said: “The overall picture in East Dunbartonshire is very positive with hundreds of students achieving excellent results. I’d like to congratulate them on their success, following months of hard work. My thanks to the staff in our schools and also to parents, carers and families for their continued support of students.” Despite the area’s overall encouraging statistics Councillor Goodall added: “I am aware, however, that not everyone will have received the news they wanted today. School staff are on hand to work with young people to plan their next steps and the Skills Development Scotland Exam Helpline will also be open.”

The Dunbartonshire Family History Society will host an event on September 13 at 7.30pm Milngavie CE Centre & library.

such as to The Map Library in Edinburgh. This month, a workshop on September 27 will focus on creative writing in family history.

Founding member Jenny Oswald said: “I can’t quite believe the society has been going for 20 years. The celebratory event is the opening meeting of the season and it will offer a chance for members to reflect on times past and to look towards the future, too.

Jenny said: “The society is a great place to learn about how to trace family history and members are happy to offer tips and advice to newcomers. We do occasional beginner sessions as well to help people with the tracing of family history. “Another part of the meetings is regular ‘brick wall’ sessions, where members help others who have come to a dead-end with their research.

“We hope that former, prospective and current members will come along to the evening.”

“We are always happy to have new people to join us and perhaps the 20th anniversary event would be a good place to start because you will find out a lot about the society then.”

The society, which was once known as Milngavie Family History Society, meets twice each month. One session is a workshop, while the other is usually a guest talk. The society also enjoys regular outings,

Whether you’re uncertain about the choices available or if you are just looking for a better rate, it may make sense to take advice from a qualified mortgage advisor who understands the local market. Approaching your current lender or bank may not result in you obtaining the best mortgage deal because they generally only consider their own products. REVAMP FOR CARE CENTRE their families and carers throughout East Dunbartonshire for years. “With more people and families living with dementia, we are as determined as ever to support our mission that nobody should face dementia alone.

Alzheimer Scotland is looking forward to the re-opening of the Dementia Resource Centre in Bearsden after an exciting refurbishment. The centre, which provides invaluable support for people and their families living with dementia, is set to open this autumn and will boast a dementia-friendly Dementia Café area, comprising a lounge and working kitchen that will also support the day care function. Overall the new centre on Milngavie Road will provide a stimulating and dementiafriendly environment, where

people will be supported by skilled and knowledgeable staff to participate in a range of therapeutic activities. Alastair Black, Service Manager from Alzheimer Scotland’s Dementia Resource Centre in Bearsden, said: “Our resource centre has been a successful local hub for Alzheimer Scotland providing high-quality support, information, advice and activities for people living with dementia,

“This is a very exciting time for us as the new-look centre will allow us to host a dementia café, in addition to providing our dementia day care service onsite, offering dementiatailored, therapeutic support in a welcoming and comfortable setting.” Alastair added that the charity wants to ensure local families are aware of the support of Alzheimer Scotland, which can be secured through Self-Directed Support (SDS). A Glasgow theatre group is hoping to attract new audiences after securing a new venue for its productions. Giffnock Theatre Players will present Martin McDonagh’s dark comedy The Cripple of Inishmaan at the end of October at Webster's Theatre on Great Western Road. GTP chair Glynis Poole said: “We will be performing at the 180-seater theatre for the first time and we hope to be able to reach out to people beyond the core southside audience. “Perhaps we will see people from Bearsden and Milngavie making the trip to the west end for our latest play.” The Cripple of Inishmaan is set in Ireland in 1934, where a Hollywood film crew arrives to

GOLDEN CELEBRATION AT MUGDOCK

What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn

This month: GETTING STEAMED UP... Richard and Kate Graham (centre couple) visited Mugdock Country Park to mark their 50th Wedding Anniversary

Mugdock Country Park was the setting for a special golden celebration this summer for a couple from America. Richard Graham, the Chieftain of The Clan Graham Society of North America, and his wife Kate came to Scotland to mark their 50th wedding anniversary.

said: “I am delighted to welcome Richard and Kate Graham back to Mugdock Country Park, which must feel like a second home for them by now.”

Mugdock Castle is the historic seat of the Clan Graham.

Every five years, The Clan Graham Society of North America comes to Scotland and visits key sites associated with the clan, including Mugdock.

Richard and Kate were greeted by a host of dignitaries including the 8th Duke of Montrose, James Graham (Clan Chief); East Dunbartonshire Provost Alan Brown; Stirling Provost Christine Simpson; and Cllr Jim Gibbons, Chair of Mugdock Country Park Joint Management Committee.

The Clan holds a Mugdock Auction at its AGM and raises funds for the improvement and development of Mugdock Castle, which includes the Graham room, itself funded by the clan.

NICE, the National Institute for Clinical Excellence, has approved a new steam treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia. This condition is very common, affecting many men beyond the age of 50. The prostate gland is only found in men, and sits at the base of the bladder. It normally tends to grow with age, and in older men can cause restricted flow of urine from the bladder. This can result in increased visits to the toilet, which can affect sleep if during the night, slowed emptying of the bladder and increased risk of urine infections. At its most severe it can cause complete blockage, and as

the bladder continues to fill, this can become very painful, relieved only by passing a tube (catheter) into the bladder. The steam treatment being pioneered is not widely available, but involves passing a tube into the prostate and puffing steam to remove some of the excess tissue and widen the passage, and may have fewer complications than surgery. Men with even early prostate symptoms should speak to their doctor, who can arrange tests to rule out prostate cancer and may suggest medication which can help relieve symptoms. But don’t expect steam treatment just yet!

When it comes to wedding planning there’s no right or wrong way to do it. Our simple step by step planning guide consists of the 12 main tasks that every couple should have on their to-do-list. 1

Plan Budget

Have an open discussion about your finances. How much you can afford and how much you will be able to save. If your parents are helping, inlcude them early in your discussions. Not planning can lead to a lot of financial stress later on.

2

Venue

Your venue will determine your date, location and your maximum guest numbers, so make choosing your venue one of the first things on your to-do list. Do you need accommodation? Does the venue offer its own catering?

3

Bridal Party

Think carefully about who will be the best people to support you on your special day. Extra costs may include outfits, bouquets, buttonholes and thank you gifts, so the more people you have, the more this could impact your budget.

4

Guest List

Decide who to invite to the day versus the evening taking into account your guests' plus ones. Based on your budget your guest list may need to be determined by how much you want to spend per head on catering.

To advertise, call Martin or Debbie now on 0141 433 1526

5

Suppliers

Your venue may have a list of recommended suppliers, but you might want something a little bit different so gather all the options before booking your suppliers and paying your deposits. Don't be afraid to shop around!

Legal Matters with Gill Bowman BA LLB

ASSISTANCE This month: LEGAL AT A POLICE STATION The right to legal advice from a solicitor, if you are being held by the police on suspicion of committing a crime, was introduced by statute in Scotland following the UK Supreme Court case of Cadder v HM Advocate. You now have the right to speak to a solicitor at any time while in police custody. This could be by way of advice given over the telephone or directly in person. You are entitled to speak to your solicitor in private before the start of an interview. If you do not have your own legal advisor you can ask to speak to the duty solicitor.

It is important to be aware that even if you initially turn down the right to seek advice you are perfectly entitled to change your mind at any time. Consulting with a solicitor is an essential part of the justice process and their role is to protect your rights and give you advice about the law. They can also be in the room with you while you are being questioned. In the event you specifically request this then the police are required to wait for them to arrive before they question you, unless there are exceptional circumstances, such us the prevention of harm to others or a further crime being committed.

Local Heroes from Bearsden & Milngavie have been recognised for the positive impact they have made on their communities. Each hero was awarded a certificate at a special afternoon tea event, hosted by Provost Alan Brown alongside a number of local councillors, at Lairdsland Primary School in Kirkintilloch last month. exceptional voluntary work, charity work or an outstanding career. In total, 27 people were recognised across East Dunbartonshire.

Provost Brown said: “It was a privilege to host this special afternoon tea to recognise the residents who contribute so much to our local towns and villages.

In Bearsden and Milngavie, those recognised include Hugh Livingston and Frances Livingston for their “services to making Milngavie a better place to live in”.

“Between them they have put in thousands of hours of voluntary work, raised lots of money for charity and provided vital services and support for people in need.”

A fascinating workshop aims to reveal who lived in your house in the past. The event on Monday September 10, from 2pm to 3.30pm, at Bearsden Library in Bearsden Community Hub will also offer the opportunity to find out the age of your house and even track down the original building plans. The practical workshop is led by an expert archivist and shows participants how to research the history of any building. The event is free but booking is essential as numbers are limited. To book your place call the EDLC booking system on 0141 777 3143 or book online at www.booking. edlc.co.uk/horizons/culture.

PUPILS ENROL AT NEW SCHOOL Senior Savvy with Suhail Rehman

This month: DEPRESSION IN THE ELDERLY One of the hardest questions I get from families is:

‘how can I get help for my loved one when they don’t want it?’ My advice:

Some 450 pupils have moved into a new £10 million primary school in Bearsden. St Nicholas’ Primary has enabled the co-location of two former schools, which were in need of modernisation. The school has been built on the site of what was St Andrew’s Primary and allows pupils from the former St Joseph’s Primary, Milngavie, to be taught on the same site. The project was delivered by Morgan Sindall, on behalf of East Dunbartonshire Council. It is the fifth school to be built through the Council’s Primary School Improvement Programme (PSIP). St Nicholas’ Primary features a 32,000 square foot building with 17 flexible and open classrooms, designed without doors to encourage collaboration.

It also has landscaped outdoor learning areas, play areas and a 3G synthetic pitch. There are dedicated spaces for art, science and display throughout the school, all benefitting from the latest technology. The project supported eight local apprentices and students from nearby Bearsden Academy were given careers talks and work placements, with a view to encouraging them to consider construction as a career path. East Dunbartonshire Council Joint Leader, Vaughan Moody, said: “The children at St Nicholas’ will be educated in a building with all modern facilities, designed specifically to deliver Curriculum for Excellence.”

DON’T DISMISS SYMPTOMS If your parent is not eating regularly or loses interest in activities that used to give them pleasure, it could be depression. TALK ABOUT HOW THEY FEEL CareGivers can help by recognising the significance of talking – Asking how they feel. It is important to hear them out and honour their emotions. Listening offers direct comfort and support. LOOK FOR SUBTLE SIGNS ‘I am not sad or lonely…’ parents don’t want to burden

the family. Instead they show signs of distress by wringing their hands excessively, getting agitated or having difficulty sitting still. RECOGNISE DEPRESSION AS AN ILLNESS People can be so sick with depression that they can’t get out of bed. Avoid making them feel guilty by telling them to get out more or pull themselves together. WE CAN HELP Ask for support, be it advice on how to make subtle yet significant changes at home or assistance with care at home.

CALL OUT FOR BOWLS PLAYERS JOIN A FESTIVAL

OF OYSTERS & FIZZ A new Milngavie Oyster and Fizz Fest takes place this month in Finsbay Lane. The event is on September 29, from noon until 6pm, and is organised by Finsbay café, bar and restaurant.

A group that meets in Bearsden to play carpet bowls hopes to encourage new members to come along to join regular get-togethers. St Andrew’s Carpet Bowls Club has seen membership fall in recent times and they would like to boost numbers again. The group meets on Thursdays from 1pm to 4pm in St Andrew's Church on Roman Road. Dorothy MacLean, secretary of the group, said: “No experience is needed to play carpet bowls and any tuition that is required will be given. “Carpet bowls is a very enjoyable activity and is open to people of all ages. We have two members

celebrating their 90th birthdays this year. “Playing carpet bowls is also a great way to socialise with people and to make new friends.” The club mainly comprises retired people with members coming from Scotstoun and Knightswood, as well as Bearsden and Milngavie. Each weekly session includes three games – six ends – and refreshments of tea, coffee and biscuits are served at around 3pm.

The annual subscription to St Andrew’s Carpet Bowls is £2 and entrance fee each Thursday is £3. There are regular competitions in a number of categories, including Ladies Singles, Gents Singles and Mixed Doubles. The presentations of cups are given at a prize-giving party at the end of June before a summer outing. Dorothy said: “It is a wonderful group to be a part of and we have a lovely time playing bowls and also enjoying outings and social events. We hope new people will join us.”

The oysters are supplied by family-run Cumbrae Oysters, based on Scotland’s west coast. The charge for each oyster is £1 and there will be different flavours including soya, lemon, ginger and chilli and even gin and tonic. The event, also in association with Piper Heidsieck, is free to attend although you are advised to book. Call 0141 956 6016 or email info@finsbay.com.

£30K PITCH STONE CARVINGS PERFECT PLAN AT MUGDOCK A Milngavie football pitch is set to benefit from a £30,500 upgrade. The work, which it is hoped will reduce waterlogging on the pitch at Oakburn Park, was identified as one of the Milngavie Open Space priority projects in the Council’s Open Space Strategy. The Council, on behalf of EDLC Trust, have appointed contractors Allstone Glasgow to carry out drainage improvement works. Previously, bookings and matches have had to be cancelled due to waterlogging. Councillor Billy Hendry, Convener of the Council’s Place, Neighbourhood & Corporate Assets Committee, said: “The improvements will allow for more people to play on the pitch for longer.”

If you walk or run in Mugdock Country Park the chances are you will have seen – or stepped on – a series of stone carvings and entrances.

At the woodland entrance, the words include “Wildly, wetly, woven” and “Steeply sloping, flushes flowing”. One of the documents of interpretation at the time of planning states: “The intention here [at woodland entrance] is through the creation of rhythmic momentum, to reflect the exhilarating rhythm of walking and, by extension, many people’s passionate response to the environment.”

But do you know their origins? The sandstone installations in Mugdock Wood were funded by Millennium Forest for Scotland Trust in the year 2000, as part of a larger project to celebrate the ancient woodland and to improve the conservation management.

At Drumclog entrance, the contrast between the mature woodland of Mugdock Wood and the “recent regeneration” of birch on Drumclog Moor is highlighted. A double threshold is inscribed with “Mugdock Wood – many year’s turning” and “Drumclog Moor – New leaves unfurling”.

The series of sandstone carvings, many inscribed, are located at entrances to Mugdock Castle, Craigallian Woods and Drumclog Moor, as well as where a Woodman’s Cottage was once located. They have been inlaid into paths and at entrance ways.
