NEW MEMORIAL FOR WHW FOUNDER

Provost Alan Brown and supporters at the memorial of Tom Hunter, the founder of the West Highland Way

A sculpture that pays tribute to the founder of the now world-famous walking trail, the West Highland Way, has been erected in Milngavie. Located on Southgate, the memorial is a metalwork figure of the late Tom Hunter (1926 to 2016) who proposed the idea for the WHW, which officially opened on October 6, 1980. The figure was fabricated by Scott Associates Sculpture & Design Ltd on a concrete base constructed by MacColl Landscaping Ltd. The memorial was the idea of the local charity, Milngavie in Bloom. Last month, the chairman, Douglas Cameron, addressed a small group

of notable people at an event to unveil the accompanying plaque. He related the story of how keen walker Tom, from Glasgow, conceived the idea of the West Highland Way more than 50 years ago.

attracts tens of thousands of visitors from across the world. Douglas expressed his thanks to all who contributed to the statue, including Alice Bell, who created the initial design, and Scott Associates Sculpture & Design for fabricating the statue.

Tom recognised the potential of long-distance walking paths as a way to protect the environment and to stop over-development of the countryside.

Further support came from Allander Aggregates for the membrane; Tarmac Quarries for the gravel and boulders; DCF Design Consultants for structural engineering advice; and MacColl Landscaping for the concrete base and planting.

His idea was to create a route for walkers from Milngavie to Fort William. Today, the route annually

Douglas added: “We are also very grateful to the Yorkshire & Clydesdale Bank Foundation for

their generous grant, together with munificent donations from anonymous donors.” A small group of project supporters attended the unveiling including Provost Alan Brown and councillors Jim Gibbons and Jim Goodall, as well as Wilson and Ruth Blakey of Milngavie Community Development Trust, Iain Macallister of Milngavie Community Council, Lynne Gibbons of Milngavie Youth Centre and volunteers from Bearsden & Milngavie Ramblers and Milngavie in Bloom. The event was another opportunity to thank all the volunteers who have worked hard over the past five years to restore the beds at the start of the West Highland Way.

This year's Hidden Gardens event in Bearsden was a huge success raising more than £1700 for charity

A summer event that saw hundreds of people visiting local gardens has raised more than £1700 for two mental health charities. Eleven gardens were opened up to “It was so lovely to see individuals, couples and groups wandering visitors in Bearsden as the second Hidden Gardens event took place. round the roads of Bearsden with their programme and map in their Two couples, Fiona and Ian hand, trying to find their way to McMillan and Eileen and Stewart the next garden on their list.” Young, founded the Hidden Gardens event last year. They are now planning to run the event again in 2020. Stewart said: “We were very fortunate with the weather for the Hidden Gardens 2019 event and all the gardens looked amazing. There were so many different shapes, sizes, colours and they were immaculate.

The money raised has been donated to Place2Be and COPE (Drumchapel), following in the spirit of the Bearsden Festival of May 2019, which had mental health as its theme. The organisers also want to extend their thanks for the local support. Stewart said: “Thanks to all the gardeners who volunteered

These made a large contribution to the sum raised. “Also, we are grateful to those who coordinated the homebaking and the running of the tearoom, as well as those who looked after ticket sales.” A date, late in May 2020, has been proposed for the next Hidden Gardens. Mortgage Matters:

Could You Save Money Each Month By Re-mortgaging? Reducing your bills by hundreds or even thousands of pounds each year seems like a pretty smart idea to me. If you currently have a mortgage, you may be paying out more each month than you need to. When should you apply for a re-mortgage? Many people tend to think that they need to wait until their current deal ends before they can apply to remortgage, but this is not the case. You don’t need to wait until your existing loan ends before making a new application, as lenders will allow you to lock in a new deal up to 6 months before your current fixed term ends.

CUT WASTE, SAVE MONEY The Resource Efficient Scotland programme includes fully funded one-to-one support from technical specialists on how they can make practical savings. There are also 15% cashback deals on interest-free and unsecured loans from £1,000 to £100,000 for any energy, water and waste projects that deliver carbon savings.

Local businesses are invited to attend an event that will offer important lessons in saving money by being more resource efficient. In preparation for Scotland’s Climate Week 2019, two hourlong awareness sessions will be held at F-Loft, Stewart Street, in Milngavie, on Wednesday October 2, one at 8am for an 8.30am start and another at noon for a 12.30pm start. They are free to attend and run by Business Gateway East Dunbartonshire, in conjunction with EDC and Zero Waste Scotland’s Resource Efficient

Scotland programme. There will be information about the practical and financial support available to cut energy and water use and reduce waste. The events are also in support of the council's Sustainability and Climate Change Framework, which sets out how the local authority is working with others to promote resource-efficient, equitable and financially sustainable practices.

Another scheme for Enhanced Capital Allowances enables businesses to claim an 100% first-year capital allowance on purchases of certain energy and water saving equipment. In addition, businesses can benefit from guidance on implementing the Good to Go scheme for cafés and restaurants. A spokesperson said: “Over five years, the Resource Efficient Scotland programme has helped small and medium-sized businesses make an average 24% saving on energy costs.” To book a place, see bgateway.com/local-offices/ east-dunbartonshire/events.

GALA WEEK ON DISPLAY The Milngavie Heritage Centre are hosting an exhibition entitled 'Milngavie Week – A History'

A community heritage exhibition takes place this month – and coincides with the annual nationwide event, Doors Open Day. The Milngavie Heritage Centre group is hosting the display entitled, Milngavie Week – A History, from September 7 to 14. The exhibition will trace the history of the event from its origins as a Gala Week in the mid-1960s, when Milngavie was twinned with the French town of Bauge, to more recent times having been relaunched in 2016 after a gap of several years.

The Milngavie Heritage Centre group is interested in receiving any Milngavie Week memorabilia. Eric Gotts, from the heritage group, said: “We would like to hear from anyone who has items for display at the exhibition and also local people who can share their personal experiences of the Gala Week.

“We want to offer visitors a poignant trip down memory lane.” The exhibition will be located in the Former Courtroom in Milngavie Town Hall. It will be open from 10am until 4pm. There will be no access on Sunday the 8th. For further information call 0141 956 3541. Doors Open Days offers free access to hundreds of fascinating buildings and this year the event celebrates its 30th anniversary. There will be a number of buildings open to the public in the local area, including Milngavie Heritage centre, Baldernock Parish Church and Watch House, Bearsden Baptist Church, Bearsden Hub, Cadder Parish Church Douglaston Doocot, Gavin’s Mill and Westerton Library, to name a few. See www.doorsopendays.org.uk for more details.

EXTENSION TO NEW HUB TALKS What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn

This month: HERD INSTINCT…

More local people will be able to offer feedback on the development of Milngavie Community Hub following an extension to the public engagement process. Four information sessions were held in June, outlining plans to combine the facilities from the Town Hall and Lillie Art Gallery site with the Community Education Centre in a new Community Hub.

Centre, which is earmarked for closure once the new hub opens.

The information from these sessions is on display in Milngavie Library and available on the consultation section of East Dunbartonshire Council website.

“There are many groups that rely on the CE centre and it would seem better to enhance this centre rather than closing it.

Fiona said: “Although a hub can be seen as a desirable facility, I don’t feel the council is allowing proper consideration for the future of the CE Centre.

But Milngavie resident Fiona Crosbie does not believe the new extension to Friday September 27 goes far enough.

“It is good news that the council is extending the deadline for engagement but I think Christmas is a more realistic deadline to allow a full consideration of the options.”

She has voiced her concern about a perceived lack of regard given to the future of the CE

Recently the UK lost its “measles-free” status which had been given by the World Health Organisation three years ago. 231 new cases were confirmed between January and March 2019. Measles is a very infectious viral rash which can potentially infect 15 others from one person, simply through small droplets in the air. Usually causing cold symptoms and fever, in babies or the frail it can cause pneumonia or brain damage, rarely leading to death. It caused many deaths before a vaccine for it was first produced in 1968. Measles is now more common in Europe than ever before in the past 10 years, due to falling

For this to work everyone needs to support vaccination, however this was undermined a few years ago by campaigners suggesting research showed a link between autism and MMR vaccine, which was not the case. Scotland has one of the best vaccination rates in Europe, but we should keep striving for better!

JogScotland Milngavie are launching a new Couch to 10k course this month

Hazel Maclean, pictured left, with Lesley and Kirstie who all completed their first half marathon in March

A local running group hopes to encourage more people to take up jogging as they launch another programme for newcomers. JogScotland Milngavie will start a new Couch to 10k course on September 12, which will last for 12 weeks. The sessions follows a structured programme that begins with walking, then builds to gentle jogging in a fun, friendly and encouraging environment. The number of participants will be capped at 50 and Hazel Maclean will head up the programme with a team of other qualified JogScotland leaders. The JogScotland group has already run many successful

programmes. Sandy, of Milngavie, joined the Couch to 5k sessions last year. Although she initially lacked the confidence to run, she has now completed her 50th parkrun (5k). Sandy says: “I spotted an article about the Couch to 5k programme in this magazine last year and I spontaneously decided to give it a go. I had not run for a very long time and at first it was very hard. “I admit I did not enjoy it to begin with but the progress from walking to jogging was gradual and I was grateful

for the encouragement and support I got from the group. It felt very inclusive. In particular, jog leader Alison Paterson was wonderful. “I was able to progress at my own speed and while I am still not fast I feel fitter and healthier because I can now jog. I would recommend the JogScotland programme to everyone.” The new Couch to 10k is open to anyone over the age of 16 and requires no prior running experience. Participants meet at Milngavie clock tower for 6.30pm each Thursday. Contact Hazel on jogscotland milngavie@gmail.com to register interest. Also see JogScotland Milngavie on Facebook.

Big Day

So much has changed with weddings over the years. It was back in the early 70s when this reporter got wed (writes Nick Cowie.) Things were so much simpler then. Maybe it’s because there weren’t as many options as there are today. The planning of the wedding was usually left to the mother of the bride.

Themes and the overwhelming options of colour didn’t present a problem back then as a majority of weddings used white as the colour. Although in our case the bride and bridesmaids opted for the floaty fashions of the

day, which incidentally still look fantastic in the photos. After the church, it was a meal at a local hotel, then back to the bride’s parents or sometimes a village hall where there’d be sandwiches, a barrel of beer and in the tradition of the day a display of the wedding presents. As one mum commented on mumsnet: “My godmother, who married in the eighties, bought her dress the week before, from Laura Ashley and there were no hen dos or stag dos.

Wedding Feature | September 2019

Things inevitably have moved on from these days and now your average wedding is a much bigger affair. One of the most important aspects of any wedding day is selecting the right reception venue, remember it can be much simpler to start and finish locally. This area not only has some of the best venues in the country but some of the very best services to guarantee a great day, from experienced caterers and florists to beauty specialists and photographers all at hand to help your day go smoothly. If you are going for a big do one planner’s tip is to remember that the dream of a perfect summers day is far from guaranteedespecially in the West of Scotland. If you opt for a winter wedding, due to fewer bookings, there can be major savings. If a winter wedding is planned, this may swing the decision towards a venue with dramatic features such as a sweeping staircase, feature wall or elegant fireplace, these will provide a lovely backdrop for pictures.

In spring or summer, look for colourful gardens, waterfront views or an attractive gazebo and let the natural beauty of the great outdoors enhance your photographs, having great photos for social media is now a big motivator, figures show that three in ten say how their wedding looked on instagram was one of their prime wedding concerns. Whatever your budget our advertisers in the magazine represent the best of local services and can help you to a special day without breaking the bank. And maybe, a look at mum or gran’s wedding album might even be a source of inspiration rather than a giggle at the clothes!

This month: POWERS OF ATTORNEY A Power of Attorney is a written document which gives power to a chosen trusted friend, family member or professional advisor, to attend to our affairs in our steads. This may be useful if the granter is elderly, infirm or is otherwise disabled to the extent that they are unable to get out and about to deal with their affairs. To be able to grant a Power of Attorney, one must have mental capacity. If there is no Power of Attorney in place before one

loses mental capacity, an application for Guardianship requires to be made at the Sheriff Court. Due to stretched resources in the Local Authority, applications can take many months to conclude and until then, no one is able to deal with the incapacitated adult's affairs. Applications for Guardianship can also be contested by interested parties. Just like making a will, having a Power of Attorney in place, is one of life’s legal essentials.

ARE YOU BALL FOR HOCKEY?

Handyman Did you play hockey as a youngster? Are you looking for a new way to get fit? If so, a local hockey club would like to hear from you. Western Wildcats Hockey Club is looking for male and female senior players and, in particular, a goalkeeper for the men’s team. Deborah O’Toole, who is a club committee member, said: “We are keen to boost the membership of our senior teams, both men and women. And we are also hopeful of adding a goalkeeper to our men’s team. Perhaps there is someone in retirement from the sport but would like to play again. Or, perhaps there is someone who would like to learn to play this position. We can give full training and all equipment will be provided.”

Western Wildcats is a thriving hockey club based in Milngavie. Formed in 1898, it claims the title as the oldest club in Scotland and has a long history of success with 69 internationalists to date and 18 senior national trophies. Deborah, who also runs the junior section of the hockey club, added: “We are very much a community club and we offer hockey for men, women and children of all ages and all abilities. We run five men's team and three women's senior teams, as well as junior sides.

HAVE YOUR SAY AT COUNCIL

EARLY LEARNING CENTRE APPROVED

Councillor Andrew Polson

A new Early Learning & Childcare Centre (ELCC) in Milngavie has been given planning approval.

Milngavie Community Council meetings restart this month and are welcoming residents of the town to come along

Milngavie Community Council is inviting local people to come along to the the first meeting after a summer break this month. The council will meet on the first Wednesday of the month – September 4 – at 7.15pm at the Fraser Centre. Iain McAllister, the chair of Milngavie Community Council, said: “We welcome any residents in Milngavie who are willing to be proactive in helping us to solve any of the issues that we plan to address going forwards.” The voluntary organisation exists to liaise between the community and local government,

expressing residents’ views and concerns to East Dunbartonshire Council. The council also takes up matters and pursues activities that are thought to be in the best interests of Milngavie. Issues that are currently considered include the proposed Milngavie Hub; protection of the Green Belt; making the most of green spaces, particularly Lennox Park; Milngavie’s rail services; and safe cycling and walking routes.

TRANSFORMATIONS

Other focuses are the restoration of outdoor public sports facilities in Milngavie and providing a Welcome Centre for the West Highland Way. Iain added: “We hope to expand on some of the above issues and if you have any views on any issues please contact us by email at communitycouncilmilngavie@ gmail.com or drop us a note at the Fraser Centre. “Better still, why not join us in our efforts to improve life in Milngavie and come along to the first meeting after the summer break. The meetings are monthly so there are plenty of opportunities.” See milngavie.org.

The centre will be built on the St Joseph’s Primary School site and is scheduled to open in August next year. Joint Leader, Councillor Andrew Polson, said: “This is an important step forward in enabling us to deliver 1140 hours of funded and flexible childcare for all three to five year olds in East Dunbartonshire by 2020.” Another centre will be built in Kirkintilloch.

Here’s what some of our customers had to say about our work: “We had our shower room completely refurbished and are delighted with the finished product. It was very clear from start to finish that Stephen is passionate about his job, the quality of workmanship is first class and we have no hesitation in recommending this company. We would definitely use them again.” Mr and Mrs Q (Helensburgh)

• Equipment Supplied (Trade Prices)

East Dunbartonshire Council and its delivery partner Hub West Scotland lodged the planning application via architect, Holmes Miller.

It was important to me to have someone I could trust in my home when I was at work. The guys just got on with things, dealt with the unexpected when it arose and always left my house tidy and clean for me to come home to. What more could you want?” Dr. Jennifer Brown (Craigton)

CYCLE THERE, SWIM FOR FREE

A popular swim for free scheme returns this month to a local pool. Anyone who cycles to Allander Leisure Centre in Bearsden will be eligible for a free dip in the pool this month and next.

T. TOWNSLEY

The initiative was last available in February and March 2019, when a total of 618 free swims were claimed by cyclists at the Allander, as well as two other participating pools, the Leisuredrome in Bishopbriggs and Kirkintilloch Leisure Centre.

The scheme is being run by the Council and East Dunbartonshire Leisure and Culture (EDLC) Trust, and funded by the Smarter Choices, Smarter Places Programme, which is aimed at encouraging active travel. It runs from September 1 to October 31.

To secure your free swimming session, subject to admissions availability, simply cycle to one of the three centres, take a selfie on your bike outside and then show it to reception colleagues.

Councillor Billy Hendry, Convener of Place, Neighbourhood & Corporate Assets, said: “It's important to try to stay active for health and wellbeing – as well as enjoyment – and both cycling and swimming are great ways to do just that.

A RECORD FOR MOSSFEST RETURNS TO PARK THE FUTURE A Bearsden church is celebrating after completing a huge heritage project. New Kilpatrick Church, an A listed building dating back to 1649, has spent more than four years recording all of its major furnishings, including the acclaimed stained glass windows. The recording was carried out by members of the Arts Society, Bearsden and Milngavie. A special service was held to mark the completion of the project in July and to offer insight into the recordings. At the end of the service, coleaders of the project, Peter Davies and Meg Macfarlane, presented a bound copy of the record to minister Roddy Hamilton.
