the Benefit of payBacK tiMe and polytunnels are used at Levengrove Park, in Dumbarton, to propagate a variety of produce including tomatoes, beans, onions, shallots, turnips and sprouts.

ROOTS: Offenders who are serving Community Payback Orders are now contributing back into society by growing veg for some of the poorest families in the area.

Offenders from across West Dunbartonshire who are serving Community Payback Orders are growing tasty and healthy vegetables for some of the poorest families in the area. West Dunbartonshire Community Foodshare supports people experiencing financial crisis by providing bags of food each week to those who are struggling to feed themselves. Clients on the distribution list collect food packs which consist of essential foodstuffs such as tinned food and pasta which are provided by Asda, Morrisons and Sainburys as well as contributions

by members of the public. In addition to this they receive soup packs which are the produce grown by Community Payback and contain basic commodities such as potatoes, cabbage, leeks, beetroot and onions. The vegetables are grown in two plots within Dalmuir Allotments, made up of five raised beds and an area with two greenhouses. In addition, a heated greenhouse

Some produce is grown in the polytunnels at Levengrove but the majority of produce is planted out in the allotments in Dalmuir. Bill Freeland, Community Payback placement co-ordinator, said: “The produce grown at the allotments is delivered to West Dunbartonshire Foodshare every Wednesday before being distributed on Fridays from three locations across the area. “In order to increase the amount of food we can produce we have now taken on an additional large sized allotment at Dalmuir. “This has allowed us to plant out winter growing vegetables and one crop of late potatoes which should provide fresh vegetables until the end of the

year. “The additional space will allow us to grow fresh vegetables earlier in the year and provide two crops of late potatoes and winter cropping vegetables as well as increasing our growing capacity of winter cropping vegetables at Levengrove. This is an extremely worthwhile project and all of the people who have been involved really take to it.” Councillor Gail Casey, chairwoman of the West Dunbartonshire Health and Social Care Partnership, added: “This successful project just goes to show the benefit that Community Payback Orders can offer to our residents. “By engaging offenders in activities which help to provide food for some of the most vulnerable people in our society they are giving back to the community whilst also learning new skills. I look forward to seeing this project continue to go from strength to strength.”

A local charity has asked Community Advertiser to tell readers of important new rights when it comes to shopping just in time for Christmas. West Dunbartonshire Citizens Advice Bureau, along with local Trading Standards Officers, is promoting the new Consumer Rights Act which recently came into force – and which is obviously important during the busiest shopping period of the year. Manager Joe McCormack said: “For the first time, digital purchases are covered by one coherent law. That means you are entitled to a replacement for a faulty online game, song WE ALSO OFFER

Perhaps most significantly, there are now clear timelines for

“Make sure you have a note of when you make a purchase. And remember, shops still don’t have to give you a refund just because you decide you don’t like something you’ve bought. But when things do go wrong through no fault of your own, come to the CAB, call our consumer line or speak to local Trading Standards.” Local outlets wishing to order copies of the campaign poster for display should contact the CAB. Also available are ‘Rights Cards’, which have reminders of key details - such as the Citizens Advice consumer service (tel: 03454 04 05 06). THE

BowlS with the veteranS In the bad old days of ageism anyone over 60 was plain “old”, but these days nothing could be farther from the truth.

You don't need to purchase bowls or special clothing, as all that's required is a pair of flat shoes.

Even if you don't fancy throwing a bowl you’re welcome to pay a visit for a chat and a laugh.

One well-established local club hugely prefers its “veterans” tab, because of course it stresses hard-won experience over mere chronology.

There are outings and social evenings throughout the year and for those who wish to take part there are indoor and outdoor competitions within the club and also league games between all four clubs.

But members of Bonhill Veterans Bowling Club know how to have fun, too, and this month are asking our more mature readers – even those who have never previously lifted a bowl – to give the great game a shot in the new year. The club, in George Street, Bonhill, is one of four veterans bowling clubs in West Dunbartonshire, and anyone who is over 60 is eligible to join and will be made very welcome. For a fee of £10 a year and 50p each day you play at the club, you can play bowls all year round (outdoors in the summer and carpet bowls in

Bowls provides you with gentle exercise, reckoned extremely beneficial health wise, within a very friendly relaxed environment, so why not go along and give it a try? the winter) and also have a tea or coffee and a biscuit or two. All abilities are welcome even if you have never played before and those who can play are very helpful towards novices.

Even if you don't fancy throwing a bowl you’re welcome to pay a visit for a chat and a laugh. For further information contact President Jim McCarroll on 01389 298663 or (clubhouse) 01389 750449.

SKapade’s epic year Steven Galloni of Dumbarton’s SKapade music studios reckons 2015 has been “awesome” for the venture – and it’s not over yet. The definite highlight (apart from the studio’s opening in Castlegreen Street earlier this year) was the presentation of an award to him and founder Steven Kirkwood from the Princes Trust, in recognition of the work they’ve done for young people – while running a “professional studio solution” for dance music DJs and producers all over Scotland. Looking at what has already been achieved it’s arguably fair recognition for an endeavour that goes far beyond any conventional approach to the music business – which in the past has sometimes been seen as exploitative and greedy, rather than publicspirited. SKapade, by contrast, is setting out to inspire young people, both about music and about the world of ideas. Now the studios are set to commence winter workshops on Monday, December 14 (start at 6pm) in addition to current

Steven Galloni tells us: “These are where we are working with young people to help them learn about music production, life in the music industry and inspiring them to chase down their dreams and define their goals. “At the end of the course the young people will have their very own track that they worked on, with producers and DJs who are travelling the world doing what they love.”

The council is piloting the internships over the next two years and, if successful, the scheme could be extended further.

• Depression • Addiction • Anxiety • Trauma • Phobias • Anger • Sleep problems • Relationship Difficulties • Obsessions • and more

Corporate services convener councillor Kath Ryall said: “As a council we’re committed to improving economic growth and enhancing the employment prospects of residents.

It’s hard enough to gain qualifications without being exploited from the moment you start the job-seeking process – as many graduates know. So a new internship scheme in West Dunbartonshire could set the pace for a better deal for qualified people looking for a decent start to the world of professional work. Run by the council, the fulltime, paid work experience placements, which are available for up to 11 months, aim to provide graduates with practical experience in their chosen career and enhance their future

employability and skills. The £14,000 they will receive is hardly a king’s ransom, and it’s just a pilot test, but it arguably still amounts to a meaningful start for people who would rather spend time learning and training than working odd or difficult hours to make ends meet. Each placement will focus on a specific project or programme of work which will aim to boost the graduate's CV and future career

“We know it can be difficult for people to get the first step on the career ladder in an area relevant to their degree. “Our internships will offer graduates the opportunity to work within a large, public sector organisation, develop transferable business skills and gain valuable work experience. “There are also clear benefits for the council in bringing new talents, skills and perspective to the workplace.” The initial run of applications has closed, but for anyone aiming to take advantage of similar opportunities in future regular visits to www.myjobscotland.gov. uk are advised.

For anyone aiming to start the New Year on an energetic note the January 2nd walk, jog or run in Balloch Country Park is a must. Now celebrating its 5th year, the event is a great opportunity to shrug off the festive slough and lose a few calories into the bargain. West Dunbartonshire Athletics Club invites residents along with walkers, joggers and runners to go along and lace up their trainers for a fun day out in the

National Park. The two mile course starts at the main gates of the park, then proceeds past scenic Balloch Castle, the Walled Garden and of course the beautiful backdrop of the hills, before returning back to the start. The route will be marked out

Children need to be accompanied by an appropriate grown-up, of course, but it’s up to those taking part whether to saunter or sprint – and nobody will be recording “official times” as in an actual contest, because it’s all about saying hello to 2016 in a fun way. This is a free event, with no registration required, and just so it doesn’t seem too Spartan a start to the year there’s some complimentary shortbread for all contestants at the end. The course map for the twomile walk, jog or run can be found at www.mapmyrun.com/ routes/fullscreen/915619291, and there are more details at http:// runnpark.leaguerepublic.com/ There is also a hotline number you can call to find if the run has been cancelled due to severe weather: it’s 07534365271.

That ring of light water perspectives of local topography. It’s a display that’s a must-see for the area’s many talented photographers, but everyone – as was intended – can enjoy viewing this spectacular art.

Island Drift is “an immersive photographic installation” that’s now the subject of a fascinating new Glasgow gallery exhibition – and Loch Lomond is the star. In a dramatic series of images capturing the haunting majesty of Scotland’s most famous loch the evocative digital images are reckoned a breakthrough in art circles, and were created in partnership with Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park and backed by public art charity NVA. The charity’s projects usually centre on physical public art you can visit and experience on site, but for this exercise the pictures

Designer James Johnson and photographer Alan McAteer worked with creative director Angus Farquhar and park rangers to manipulate moving and static light sources on land and water. This Street Level Photoworks exhibition allows a series of stunning light box images to form linked series of four images that together create multiple

Earlier in the year, Street Level Photoworks were commissioned by NVA to deliver the Island Drift engagement programme, involving primary schools from the Loch Lomond and The Trossachs area in some of the creative photography techniques. Pupils took part in sessions that explored manual camera techniques, panoramas and painting with light with an exhibition of the pupils’ works taking place at Cashel N ative Forest Centre in May. They created stunning photography of their local area resulting in a diverse collection of images, from considered studies of nature, to sweeping, swirling and imagined landscapes and abstract reconstructions of reality. The exhibition is at Trongate 102, Glasgow G1 5HD; and there’s more at www. streetlevelphotoworks.org

heating upgrades to follow soon. “The roll-out supports our mission to transform Scotland’s railways by delivering better, bigger and greener trains for our customers.” The refurbished trains will be released at a rate of about two a month with the aim of ensuring that the improvement programme does not affect the scheduled services. Transport minister Derek Mackay says the improvement plan is “great news” for people travelling on busy commuting routes, and that they are the latest upgrade to keep pace with passengers’ expectations.

“We’ve listened to feedback when planning these changes. That’s why we are fitting more than 90 power sockets to each of these trains, with wifi and

Straight from the heart…

Many think of Christmas as a time of giving. This year remember there is a gift which costs us nothing, but may be a life-saver for someone who we’ll never meet. Blood cannot be manufactured and transfusions are dependent upon people who give blood. It is the vital life source which carries oxygen and food to our organs, and contains immune cells which protect against infection. However only 4% of people well enough to do so actually give blood. Our bodies contain 5 litres of blood, and we have around 25 trillion red cells inside

us, usually leaving a few to spare! Two million units of blood are used every year in the UK, requiring 6,000 donations daily. It is used to replace blood lost during major operations, serious accidents or major bowel hemorrhage. Babies can benefit from transfusions in the womb before they are born, and it can help people with serious blood disorders such as leukaemia. It can only be stored for 35 days, so stocks need continually topped up. Consider giving a special gift this winter. road and look out for pedestrians, particularly the most vulnerable such as children and the elderly.

Be Safe ,Be Seen is a simple message... A series of adverts have been placed on buses asking drivers ‘Look can you see me?’ to remind motorists to be aware of vulnerable road users.

A main focus is on children, but the same message applies to drivers, cyclists and grown-up pedestrians, and it’s a bid to avoid more fatal accidents in West Dunbartonshire. Inspector Adam McKenzie, of Police Scotland said: “Sadly three children have been knocked down and two local residents have tragically died on West Dunbartonshire’s roads over the last year.

BRIGHT KIDS: Although the Be Safe, Be Seen campaign is aimed towards kids it reminds adults to be vigilant in the winter conditions.

“This is a stark reminder to us all of how vigilant we must be. “Be Safe Be Seen is a simple message that wearing or carrying something bright lets drivers see us whilst reminding drivers to look out for pedestrians especially at night.”

FURTHER FATHER PRRs Following on from last month’s topic of Parental Rights and Responsibilities, I have been asked to further explain how a father can obtain these PRRs. The first recommendation would be to approach the other parent and request that they enter into an agreement which will convey the rights and responsibilities on you which you would have enjoyed had you been registered on the child’s birth certificate or married to the mother. Such an agreement is provided for under S.4 of the Children (Scotland) Act 1995. The agreement must be registered in the Books of

However, when this is not possible the courts can be asked to adjudicate and a court action can be raised against the other parent. Section 11 of the ’95 Act allows a person to seek an order granting PRRs on them. It is often the case that this type of court action will also include a request to the court to regulate a specific aspect of parental rights, such as contact or residence issues.

iconic hotel GoeS on Sale fledged relaunch in a couple of years time. But this latest development, which hasn’t attracted massive publicity, heralds more investment and more tourism interest at the upper end of the market, which in turn is good news for the many local businesses who derive benefit from the visitor market. FOR SALE: The famous Lodge on Loch Lomond in Luss which has served the public for years is now for sale.

This year has seen major changes to the leisure fabric of Lomondside, and that’s a pattern that’s clearly set to continue as the appeal of the National Park gathers pace. The latest major development in the quietly busy hotel scene is the marketing for sale of the landmark Lodge on the Loch Hotel, the sort of offer which poses a “who” rather than “when” sale – because hotel operators both national and independent will be forming an orderly queue to place their bids for this exceptional blue chip

visitor tourism resource. Throughout the year we’ve seen some significant new arrivals on the lochside scene, not least the launch of Marston’s Queen of the Loch venture, and – as a foretaste of things still to come – there has been major achievement for the still shore-bound Maid of the Loch steamer, which is now on a steady course towards fully-

The four-star Luss hotel has 47 bedrooms as well as conference facilities for around 250, and is accurately described by the selling agent as “an exceptional opportunity to acquire a successful luxury hotel in one of Scotland’s most impressive and sought-after locations.” The firm says bluntly – and correctly – that hotels on the banks of Loch Lomond “simply don’t come to market”, and predicts future business growth for whoever takes the helm. Over the next few years it seems possible Loch Lomond could become “the” Scottish wedding venue, with this hotel (which has a wedding licence for outdoor ceremonies) playing a leading role.

Don’t worry if you missed the Channel 5 series on lochside wildlife (finished this month), because on that sort of form it’s surely going to inspire more of the same. Of course West Dunbartonshire has featured on nature programmes before, but the film footage of native species – done “Attenborough style” – was arguably in a league of its own. It underlined dramatically the huge importance of species as varied as deer and (pictured) black grouse, but at the same time implicitly posed questions about how best to sustain

such a rich and complex slice of the authentic natural world on the doorstep of Scotland’s biggest conurbation. Loch Lomond: a Year in the Wild used both local knowledge and specialist expertise to get an “inside track” picture of National Park native wildlife, all set against what Simon Jones, director of conservation and visitor operations at the Park

It isn’t hard to imagine the development of a form of niche tourism designed to allow outdoor enthusiasts the chance to see some of this fascinating hidden world up close – but Luss Estates has already spoken feelingly about the havoc human beings cause to native species just by being there. Getting the balance between the public’s right to enjoy open spaces and protecting the animal environment is always going to be a challenge. Channel 5’s series underlined why Lomondside is a unique area, in which the Park authorities have the awesome responsibility of finding that balance and keeping it. We’ll have much more on Lomondside wildlife issues in future editions.

Local News | DECEMBER 2015

we can all help Santa In last month’s edition we flagged up the urgent need for donations to local Foodshare bases in the run-up to Christmas – and for December that appeal now extends to toys. The people responsible for Foodshare realise that at a time when many people struggle to find adequate food for their family’s daily needs a luxury like Christmas presents is out of the question –and that’s bad news for children. So a toy bank scheme has been set up with the aim of ensuring every child in the area gets something by which to remember a happy Christmas full of surprises and fun, and the process of collecting and organising donations is well advanced. But as this issue was preparing to go to press there were still some valuable weeks to go for West Dunbartonshire Christmas Toy Bank, and both donations and possibly volunteers may still be needed. The Toy Bank scheme is a grass roots effort inspired by a Bonhill mum who hated the idea of any child being “locked out” from Christmas – or of desperate

parents using scant resources to try and buy presents themselves.

worry that anything they give to a help project like this won’t help local families, but in this case that’s exactly what is intended –and even the smallest gesture of support is valuable. For further details visit there Facebook on: Alexandria Toybank.

Its volunteers are screened before they can be accepted, as obviously there are children’s issues involved, and the scheme’s mission statement is all about helping families in the most effective, responsible and accountable way. Meanwhile it almost goes saying that anyone able to donate food items at one of the area’s regular Foodshare dropoff points will be helping some family to make the winter just a little less bleak.
