Local News - JANUARY 2016
2015 brougHt cHANges AND progress Over the past 12 issues of the Community Advertiser we’ve published almost 200 articles. Glancing back over them gives something of an insight into the varied tapestry that is our vibrant community. From the visionaries who plan to transform our seafront, to the efforts reported in this edition to establish a centre of excellence for digital arts and showcase Helensburgh’s past Heroes to the current local heroes who through hell and high water put on festivals, improve our playgrounds and parks, put up Christmas lights, put on markets and fi rework displays - we’ve got a lot to be thankful for. A few other random highlights from 2015 include plans for the £2 million restoration of Hermitage Park pushing ahead, meanwhile the efforts of volunteers to clear rampant overgrowth continue. At Cove local people managed to raise over £100,000 to restore Craigrownie Park in less than a year. In Kilcreggan the Youth Cafe started by Susie Will was boosted
by a £30,000 grant to turn a disused tennis court into a skate park. The Cove and KIlcreggan Youth Cafe was one of three local organisations to receive awards from the Armed Forces Community Covenant Grant Scheme. A tourism boost came when the marketing group Love Loch Lomond relaunched the Clyde Sea Lochs Trail. The nine interpretation panels sited at points of interest or viewpoints were completely rewritten and designed, and now include a geocaching trail making the Clyde Sea Lochs an even more appealing area to visitors. Construction of the new Artist Centre at Cove is on schedule and due for completion by April. The £1.4 million capital project is funded by Creative Scotland and a number of trusts and individuals, including major awards from the Robertson and the Monument Trusts. at St Peter’s Seminary in Cardross will take place early this year. Public Art specialists NVA who are leading the ambitious £7 million scheme to reclaim the future for St Peter's seminary are staging a light and music event to mark the launch of Scotland’s Festival of Architecture. Finally It might not have shaken the foundations of the world of publishing, but for us 2015 was a special year. July marked the tenth anniversary of the Community Advertiser. The fi rst edition covered just 16 pages, but nevertheless was an instant hit. Now the current glossy 36 page magazine has different editions across three circulation areas. We aim to keep up the good work and wish all our readers and advertisers a happy and prosperous 2016.

De-clutter to help charities Helensburgh was once criticised as being a Charity Shop capital, but that does have advantages. Councillors and the Chamber of Commerce have said that they understand why many local residents are concerned about prime sites in the town opening as charity shops. On a more positive angle through, charity shops fill shop spaces that might otherwise sit empty - which would be even less appealing. In addition, they support charitable causes and the recycling/reuse of items which might otherwise go to landfill. It would after all be unreasonable to expect landlords to refuse to take on a charity shop if they know the alternative is an empty shop.

Particularly welcome donations include men’s, women’s and children’s warm winter clothing, as well as accessories, including shoes, belts, handbags and jewellery, records and books. Charity shops in the town support among other things, Cancer Research, The Salvation Army, Shelter , the British Heart Foundation , DEBRA and Oxfam.
With that in mind the charity shops are suggesting that it might be a good idea to have a postChristmas clear out to help fund what is often life saving work. Volunteers have told us : “We’re sure lots of people are thinking it would be great to clear

Local News - JANUARY 2016
A NiNe miLe New yeAr toNic He adds: “ Just before entering the conifer plantations, it's worth looking out for a boulder to the right which has a hollow on top, thought to possibly form the socket for a stone cross. This might have related to use of the Stoneymollan as a coffi n road, or perhaps to serve as a pilgrimage route for those heading for Iona.”
WALK IT OFF: Going for a long walk is a great way to boost your mood
The best way of shaking off those post holiday blues - and a few pounds is a good long walk. But where to go and what to see. One answer might be to click on the Three Lochs Way Facebook page. Their Helensburgh and District Access Trust trustee, Alistair McIntyre gives some useful tips in what will be a continuing journal about his exploration of the route. On the fi rst leg of the route from Balloch over to Helensburgh, a
nine mile stretch on the ancient Stoneymollan trackway, Alistair says that it's well worth looking back from time to time to savour the ever-changing perspective offered by Loch Lomond and the surrounding hills, including the intriguingly named Mount Misery on the opposite side of the loch, which, despite the name, is reckoned to be one of the fi nest viewpoints at this southern end.
The top of Ben Bouie, is, he says, a great place for lunch. “ On the mid slopes of this hill, archaeologists Tam Ward and Sandra Kelly have recently been uncovering abundant evidence of prehistoric activity, including structures such as burnt mounds and charcoal lenses, and artefacts of fl int, chert, pitchstone and cannel coal.” Alistair adds : “ Dropping down towards Helensburgh through the former farmlands of Camis Eskan, now planted with trees, there is ample opportunity to enjoy Helensburgh’s stupendous setting by the Clyde.” See his great photos and further episodes on Facebook Three Lochs Way. The guidebook is on www.threelochsway.com

they’ve got themselves the best possible deal. We continue to disprove that theory time and time again. We would invite anyone who is looking for insurance, be it car, van, travel, home, life or business cover, to put us to the test”.
We were born out of our love for animals and horror of seeing our own pets left alone and scared in kennels whenever we had to go away and leave them. At Doggy Carers, we understand how difficult it is to leave our furry family members behind and how important it is to ensure they are well-loved, cared for and happy. We offer home boarding at competitive prices in our warm, clean and loving home, where your dog will be treated with love and affection; or, if you prefer, we can help you out with our professional dog walking service or pet home visit service,

between all the organisations. “Currently in Helensburgh and Lomond Carers we have nearly 60 volunteers providing us with much needed support and assisting us with delivering the services that carers need. The move to Lomond House has made us and our partner organisations realise that additional volunteers would be a great asset for us and our carers and clients.
In March 2016 Helensburgh and Lomond Carers SCIO, Children 1st and NHS Highland’s Children & Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) will all be moving from their current locations in the town and will be co-locating their services from Lomond House, Lomond Street, Helensburgh. This move to larger premises will help build on the joint working of the three organisations and at the same time will greatly assist them in providing much needed services for the local community. As part of the move to Lomond House the organisations are keen to recruit a team of volunteers to help assist with a range of reception and administration duties Eileen McCrory, Manager of Helensburgh and Lomond Carers, said:“The increase in staff, volunteers and the carers
accessing our services made us realise that we really needed larger premises to allow us to continue our work in the Helensburgh and Lomond area.
Our aim is to recruit a team of 10 volunteers to help provide reception and administration duties on a rota-basis. All volunteers will be fully trained and will be provided with ongoing support.
“This relocation to bigger premises with Children 1st and NHS Highland’s Children & Adolescent Mental Health Services will greatly assist in building on the joint working

JANUARY 2016 - Local News
New Hall on show The new hall for Helensburgh Parish Church is now complete. It will be dedicated this month. The hall, in fact two substantial halls, one big enough for a full badminton court, theatrical productions, dances and more will be formally opened to the community on 6th February. The other is for smaller events and there are four meeting rooms and a kitchen. As well as these rooms there is a mingling area which links the traditional majesty of the church with the contemporary feel of the new facilities and administration office.
The plan is to encourage as many of the local community as possible to come in and take a look on the 6th when as many as 41 different church activities will be showcased in an exhibition so the town can see what the parish gets up to and, if they are interested, get involved. This will be supported with a guided tour of the church and the new facilities with a background of music and singing. We will be giving more details in our February edition.
What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn
This month: MORE THAN SKIN DEEP... Here we are again. January. Christmas is over and it’s time to lose weight. For most people it’s about appearance, avoiding moving up a clothes size. However there is a more serious issue. Overweight and obesity are recognised as the biggest health challenges facing the country, and it’s a growing problem...if you’ll pardon the pun! In 2014 63% of Scots were overweight or obese. Worldwide obesity has more than doubled since 1980, with 600 million obese people worldwide. Shockingly, it is linked to more deaths worldwide than starvation. Linked with diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure

Local News - JANUARY 2016
Get ready for the winter winds We’re advised to take time now to prepare for winter before predicted severe weather strikes. That’s the view of several organisations and charities under the umbrella of Ready Scotland. They says that after one of the warmest winters on record last year we are generally reluctant to prepare for winter, or feel we are already prepared. Their research, however, suggests that we are not ready with only 41% for instance even having an ice scraper and de-icer in their car. While extreme weather can happen at any time of year, winter remains the time of greatest risk. Ready Scotland says : “ The big danger this year is complacence. The unpredictability of weather patterns means we cannot simply hope that we will miss the worst of it. While we can’t stop the weather causing disruption, we can be well prepared to cope with it. By taking some time now, we can make sure we are
ready in our homes, workplaces, communities and when we travel this winter.” In previous years severe weather left some people vulnerable. Helping each other a little can make a big difference, and planning now can save a lot of trouble later. • Identify family or neighbours who may need an extra helping hand in severe weather • Have their phone numbers to hand
• Think about what your Neighbourhood Watch group can do to help others during bad weather. Communities across Scotland have already made plans to cope when severe weather strikes. If you want to play a part in making Helensburgh and Lomond more prepared, more info on help and support is available at www. readyscotland.org Also consider downloading the Ready Scotland App to your smartphone.

If you’re looking for new and relaxing activities, a hobby group could be the perfect solution. Why not take up a new craft or arts class or even attempt to learn a new musical instrument Weight loss will be one of the big goals for so many people this year and there is plenty of help at local slimming classes in the area. Thing is it doesn’t have to be hard. A vigorous 20 minute walk every day works wonders, and you can do that by getting off one stop early on the way to work.

This month: KEEPING IT CIVIL... Deciding to end a relationship can be an extremely difficult decision and the subsequent raising of a divorce can be overwhelming. In Scotland, we benefit from the simplified Divorce Procedure, also referred to as a DIY Divorce. The simplified/do it yourself procedure is a useful tool but can only be used in certain circumstances. The grounds for divorce can be based on the fact that you have been separated for one year and your spouse consents to the divorce, two years separation or that either your or your spouse have been issued an interim gender recognition certificate. There must be no children
of the marriage under the age of 16 and there can be no outstanding financial matters. Any financial arrangements can separately be agreed by way of a Minute of Agreement. You will also have to confirm on the application that you and your spouse are able to manage your own affairs and are not suffering from a mental illness or learning disability. The benefits of using this procedure are that parties do not require to attend court and it is cost effective. The fee for lodging an application with the court is currently £111 and there is a fee exemption for those on certain benefits.
