sTonegaTe buys The Tullie inn is their difference from bland, lookalike high street outlets which don’t have much character.

Maclay’s 15-strong portfolio of outlets, but was dragged into administration when an armslength cash deal designed to boost the company’s strength went sour.

STILL GOING: Successful pub, The Tullie Inn, was up for closure even though it was very popular.

Back in March we assured readers the Tullie Inn in Balloch would find new owners fairly quickly – and we weren't wrong. To be fair, it was a bit of a nobrainer, as a solidly-performing inn close to the heart of a major outdoor attraction, it was always going to be of interest to enterprising trade operators.

anecdotal chatter about which pub owner might finally clinch the deal, it’s major bars firm Stonegate which has stepped in to buy the former Maclay outlets for just short of £12million.

But while there’s been plenty of

The Tullie was a mainstay of

In practical terms anyone who knows the Inn, or its sister former Maclay outlet the Dog House, won’t have noticed any change during the months it spent under administration.

The last few months have also seen the launch of the Queen of the Loch in Balloch by Marston’s, another significant UK operator – one which has ploughed vast sums into finding exactly what “works” for people looking for a quality experience at a reasonable price.

Along with other pubs which include famous Glasgow cask ale bar The Three Judges, and student-friendly Dram!, the Tullie Inn kept going much as before while a quiet frenzy of wheeling and dealing decided who would be the new owner.

Along with other free trade local outlets across the area generally these bar-restaurants are arguably excellent assets for tourism and the local community alike – and, moreover, in very safe hands under their larger corporate owners.

Stonegate owns about 600 outlets across the UK, and one fear among some quality bar fans is that some of the individuality fostered by Maclay could disappear within a more uniform “chain” format.

Stonegate runs chain outlets including Yates’s and Slug and Lettuce, so inevitably there will be concerns that the Tullie may lose some of its charm during the changeover.

However, hoping we are right again, that’s arguably unlikely. The strength of quality bars like the Tullie (or the “3J”, as the Three Judges is known locally)

But on the other hand this firm has also spent serious money outbidding its opponents to gain pubs whose success depends on being a bit different, and above-average.

nursery boosT Planned Better hours and extra places are two main improvements planned for local nurseries, in a new council scheme designed to help working parents - and create jobs. The council proposes making more than 100 new places available across its early learning centres, and estimates this could create over 70 new jobs in the next five years. It’s arguably an ambitious plan that aims to use existing buildings and organization while offering something new and - it’s promised - more user-friendly. A key aim is to provide more flexible provision for parents and carers, while creating Local Learning Communities linked to each of the area’s five high schools. A centre in each area would be open from 8am to 6pm and the council would also create nursery classes in a number of existing and new primary schools. Three specialist hubs for children aged birth to three are planned at Lennox, Ladyton and Ferryfield Early Learning and

Childcare Centres. Executive director of educational services Terry Lanagan said: “There have been a number of changes in early years education including the increase in provision for three and four year olds.

This review is about ensuring our service can cope with all demands in the future...

“They have told us they want early learning and childcare centres to offer greater flexibility to better fit with their commitments including work and further education.” This aims to bolster the existing hub at Meadowview Dumbarton, claimed to have been “a huge success ” since opening last year. The review proposals were considered at a key meeting last month, and it now remains to be seen whether the hoped-for improvement - in an area linked to parents' work potential and family wellbeing will deliver the goods.

“This review is about ensuring our service can cope with all demands in the future, and also responds to feedback from parents and carers.

GOLF-TIME: Clydeway Golf Professional Graham Fox (right) has won the West Dunbartonshire Council Pro Am Tournament

The summer weather has been fickle for golfers, but Clydeway Golf Professional Graham Fox proved every cloud has a silver lining by winning a prestigious Pro Am Tournament. He set a new course record of 8-under-par to win the 2015 West Dunbartonshire Council Pro Am tournament at Dalmuir Golf Course. Fox won with a score of 60 which included an inward five-under 27. This run included four birdie 2s over a span of five holes, from the 11th to the 15th, and helped

the 37-year-old win by four shots from joint runners-up Jonathan Sharp (Carrick on Loch Lomond) and Greig Hutcheon (Paul Lawrie Golf Centre). He also won the team event with the Alger Electronics amateur trio of Michael Devoy (handicap 18), Brian O'Neill (7) and Gordon Lynn (18). They had a net score

In third place were the Anton Rogan Memorial Team featuring Robert White, William Cochrane and James Walker. They each won Titleist golf bags for their efforts. The nearest the pin competition was won by Lenny Oliver, nearest the line was John Gallagher and the longest drive contest was won by Colin Leitch. Provost Douglas McAllister, who competed on the day along with more than 150 other players, said: “Not only was the weather fantastic but the quality of the golf was exceptionally high too. “To see anyone go round Dalmuir eight-under-par is pretty special and my congratulations go to Graham on his well-deserved victory.” “Next year is the 30th year of this brilliant competition and I’m looking forward to welcoming as many golfers to take part as possible.”

PRESSURE WASHING

Dumbarton Rock is our most iconic landmark, steeped in history and commanding majestic views of the Clydeside but are we really making the most of this local asset? Visitor figures for Dumbarton Castle and Rock have been disappointing, and at a time when tourism traffic is vital to the area’s economy this is being seen as an opportunity going to waste. The recent “charette” of local opinion on how the Rock should figure in town life didn’t just take tourism into account, because of course it’s first and foremost a local landmark. But the Dumbarton Castle Society certainly has ambitious plans to boost the profile of this so far shy and retiring edifice and give it a slice of the visitor action enjoyed by tourism honeypot Edinburgh Castle and super-popular Stirling Castle.

The Rock of Ages weekend in June was an ambitious bid to bring the sort of pageant enjoyed by crowds in places like Edinburgh and Stirling to

on Celtic Britain left out the fact that Strathclyde – with its capital in Dumbarton – was the last of the old British kingdoms. Yet the once independent realm centred on the Clyde Valley kept its independence for a surprisingly long time – and at its height controlled territory in Cumbria.

the great Dumbarton landmark. We were treated to everything from Vikings to medieval soldiers, Renaissance nobles and Covenanters - and also the events of the dark days of the Second World War. It was an educative but fun snapshot of the last 1,000 years of the Rock, and possibly just the start of a rolling programme of similar initiatives. A recent tv history series

Dumbarton (and of course Old Kilpatrick) also has a strong claim on St Patrick, whose historic importance can hardly be exaggerated – and that’s just the start of the massive heritage surrounding the town’s iconic Rock.

proves history still rocks

From the Roman wall at Old Kilpatrick to the monuments left by the Vikings, West Dunbartonshire has played a pivotal role in Scottish history – not least when “The Lennox” was an untamed country where fugitive kings or outlaws could seek refuge. With visionary missionaries, Jacobite intrigue and civil war, the town’s history – even before it acquired its shipbuilding reputation – is a story worth telling. Historic Scotland have developed the art of convincing history

storytelling to something of a fine art, with a quality of presentation that goes far beyond merely looking the part. In displays across Scotland (often featuring medieval life) landmark historic sites are brought alive with the sights and sounds of yesteryear. Historic Scotland arguably excels in showing that real history is more interesting than fantasy, and is bringing a taste of authenticity to bear on a past that’s too fascinating to get wrong. Rosie Wylie, national tourism

and community manager for Historic Scotland, told Community Advertiser: “The 2015 charrette has demonstrated great passion and opportunity for further partnership work with Society, the council and other local groups towards the achievement of a shared vision. “It’s one that will maximise opportunities for local, national and international interest in Dumbarton Castle and Rock. “This is an exciting time for the Dumbarton Castle Society to be growing in numbers and we look forward to developing our partnership further."

The summer of 2015 is shaping up to be a seismic time for the way we manage countryside and wildlife – and we won’t get a second chance. That’s how groups including the John Muir Trust are seeing the arguments over which strategy to adopt when it comes to fostering wildlife, including species – such as beaver, lynx, even wolves – which once teemed in our forests. Next door to West Dunbartonshire in a scenic corner of Argyll the Beaver Trials in Knapdale are now over, and are being assessed by the Scottish

Government over the holiday period. Despite conflicting opinions the famous dam-builders we tend to associate with North America more than Scotland have proven to be “Panda material” when it comes to wooing tourists. There’s also the glaring evidence that beavers are completely at home in the West of Scotland. beavering away.

Some pundits suggest beavers are definitely going to spread to Lomondside through natural migration , unless actively discouraged – while at the same time a major discussion continues about how best to protect local wildlife from weekend campers. We won’t see brown bears roaming the national park – but looking after wildlife habitat is already an important part of the park ranger’s job, and in future we could see areas of the park treated increasingly like nature reserves. Luss Estates has already publicly bemoaned the end of Loch Lomond’s capercaillie stock, but finding the balance between people’s right to enjoy the countryside and sustaining wildlife is never going to be easy. More on wildlife issues in future magazines.

Local News - JULY 2015

a WaTersCaPe Winner This stunning picture of the Clyde shore at Dumbarton was the deserving winner of the Picture This 2015 student photography competition run by West Dunbartonshire Council and West College Scotland.

HND photography student Barry McIlloney’s picture impressed judges with its vibrant colour and striking framing of the river looking upstream towards Clydebank.

In second place was Colin Poultney, an HNC Photography student, for his creative shot of the Titan Crane and a local statue The Kromer Hat which celebrates the skill of Clyde shipbuilders.

It's the second time Barry (pictured) has won the annual competition in three years after previously sharing the award jointly with his wife Jilly in 2013.

The shortlisted photos, featured recently in Dumbarton Community Advertiser, were viewed on the council's Flickr site nearly 10,000 times, and the public vote persuaded the judges to give Barry the winner's title.

He has been studying photography for three years and - perhaps unsurprisingly - now intends to embark on a professional career. His prize includes £300 worth of camera equipment.

Barry, 35, said: "I am absolutely delighted to have taken part in this competition, it was a joy to take photographs around West Dunbartonshire as there are so

many great places. I’m over the moon about the win, the quality of work is great and I’m glad I could be a part of it." He added: “I plan to use my experience and qualifications from WCS and move into work as a photographer. “My advice would be if you are considering photography as a career not to put it off, there is a great network of lecturers who are amazing photographers with years of experience and it is great to learn from them and also to work with like-minded people.”

LATE NEWS

Friday 10Th

aspect becoming steadily more important to lochside tourism in years to come. Meanwhile if you've enjoyed seeing the Tom Weir statue you'll probably also appreciate the "Action Man" version in the Oak Tree Inn - whose team put so much work into bringing the full size project to fruition.

TOM STATUE: The briliant statue of Tom Weir can be seen at Oak Tree Inn

The late Tom Weir already has a statue in his honour - and now it looks as if he'll be remembered by a regular annual festival too. The inaugural Weirfest event was an extraordinary success, with so many of the elements that were so important to the famous outdoor man built into a memorable day-long celebration of the countryside. But chances are it will just be the first of bigger and still more ambitious events in years to

come, as the Tom Weir story continues to fascinate people from all over Britain and, increasingly, abroad. The Balmaha festival also introduced many people to the joys of the waterbus, a great way of seeing Lomond scenery from an atmospheric vantage point - and it's easy to see this

Many different groups were involved in the project, and this year- in the face of often very nasty weather – droves of people from all over the country have come to admire what they have created. Beyond that, the statue and now the festival are clearly going to be an inspiration for many more people keen to explore the still unspoiled countryside on their doorstep – a “sustainable tourism” phenomenon worthy of Tom Weir himself.

Dr Nick Dunn

Robin House in Balloch is one of the area’s most cherished causes, and now everyone can help in keeping up its continued success.

This month:

“Everything in moderation” is what we were advised at Medical School, making the point that the body does not handle extremes well. A man in China recently demonstrated this after years of eating too much Tofu (rich in calcium) and not enough water, he had over 200 kidney stones removed. Whilst this is highly unusual, kidney stones themselves unfortunately affect about one in ten people in their lifetime. They are essentially crystals formed in the kidneys due to a build-up of minerals or salts such as calcium, uric acid (which also causes gout) and oxalate. Most people may have one or two small stones, a few

Run by the Child Hospice Association Scotland , it’s a vital resource which has brought light into darkness for countless children and their loving families. Most would agree it is irreplaceable, and will give accordingly. But it needs continual support, and the sort of effort carried out by the selfless children of Levenvale Primary – who have just raised a fantastic £123 from a toy sale staged at the school. They now know what an important contribution they’ve made to a place whose hardworking, caring staff appreciate all the help they can get. In previous issues we’ve highlighted major support from ex-Celtic star John Hartson, but local youngsters are playing their

part too. Debbie Mooney, head of fundraising developments and projects at CHAS, told Dumbarton Community Advertiser: “The children at Levenvale Primary did an amazing job holding a toy sale and raising over £120 for CHAS top marks to them all! “We are very grateful for this money to help CHAS provide children’s hospice services at Robin House which is a lifeline for children with a life-shortening condition, and their families.”

millimetres in diameter, but despite this they can be responsible for severe pain if trapped in the tube between the kidney and bladder, causing renal colic. Most stones are eventually passed in the urine. Occasionally they can cause a blockage to the kidney draining, requiring removal by a surgeon, or if trapped in the kidney, using high frequency ultrasound to shatter the crystals, allowing the resulting “gravel” to drain away. Mostly there is no clear underlying cause found for them, but maintaining a healthy balanced diet and good water intake is a good way to reduce your risk!

activities children can actually participate in. If it is raining have a movie day with popcorn - homemade of course, or get cooking. Pick a recipe with the children, go shopping for ingredients and cook something together that you can enjoy eating afterwards. Create a scrapbook together using photos from your family album, or torn from magazines. Build a den with the kids - if the weather is ok, you could even risk doing this outside. All you need is some boxes or sofa cushions, a few blankets, and a bit of imagination.

In the evenings get the children to design a game that you can make the next day - give them ideas to keep it simple such as a paper boat race in the paddling pool or homemade skittles using a tennis ball and empty toilet rolls. Finally a favourite and great for our windy shores, kites, they can be bought from bargain shops very cheaply and provide loads of fun.

Sunny days are great for simple activities like picnics and ball games. This can be done as close

DIFFERENT: In a year's time Alexandria might be a very different place to what it is now.

This time next year Alexandria’s town centre could be shaping up to be very a different place from what we have now. A major redevelopment site in Alexandria town centre is being primed for sale as West Dunbartonshire council continues with plans to regenerate the area.

01436 679994 www.nightanddaycleaning.co.uk

It amounts to a “take two” bid to relaunch an earlier scheme which fell through when a lynchpin supermarket development pulled out. Now the site is set to be put back on the market, but this time

with the aim of opening a more modest-sized store, just half the scale of the 35,000 sq ft outlet originally planned. If successful it will underpin the creation of new housing in the area, along with shops, bringing new life to the heart of town. Meanwhile partial demolition work is being carried out, with the aim of improving the appearance of the site while

preparing the area for future development. The council also recently invested over £700,000 in improvement works at the south end of Mitchell Way, which is not included in the development site. The project removed old canopies from the shop units, installed new shopfronts, signage and lighting and created public art in conjunction with pupils from nearby St Mary's Primary School. At stake is the chance for the area to gain a deal capable of transforming Alexandria’s centre. Regeneration chief Richard Cairns said: "We are confident that we can and will attract developers interested in taking this project forward. “Development is already underway in Alexandria with a local housing association beginning work on a new residential development and the council set to begin demolition at Mitchell Way. He said if the scheme got the go-ahead work would start immediately on marketing the site “with the aim of selecting a developer early next year."

SUMMER SCHOOL: Our Lady & St Patrick's School in Dumbarton has a range activitie taking place throughout summer.

It sounds like torment to those of us well past school years - but many local youngsters are going back to the classroom during the holidays. To help P7 pupils adapt to the move to secondary school at the start of the new term, a summer school is being held in each of the area’s five high schools at the beginning of August. Every P7 pupil in West Dunbartonshire will be invited to the Space Academy themed event which will focus on literacy, numeracy, science, technology,

engineering and mathematics. Education chiefs say local pupils are better prepared than ever for this year’s exams after hundreds took up opportunities for extra study outside school hours. This has included a Saturday morning study session in the area’s high schools, and revision sessions the day before exams.

These are in addition to master classes, and a revision programme organised to support students in the run up to their SQA exams.

Alcoholics Anonymous

Back at Easter time hundreds of S5 and S6 pupils attended master classes in 13 different subjects including English, Maths, History, Biology and French over the holidays to prepare for their Higher exams. In addition to Saturday morning sessions, study days have been held the day before exams at Our Lady and St Patrick's.

Understanding, strength and hope for anyone whose life is or has been affected by someone else’s drinking. Local meetings available. 24hr helpline: 020 7403 0888

Education convener Councillor Michelle McGinty said: “We believe improving education in West Dunbartonshire is the best way to ensure our children can achieve bright futures. "That’s why we have put so much emphasis on raising attainment and I’m really pleased to see that is now paying dividends for our pupils." Last year West Dunbartonshire ranked in the top three councils in Scotland for the number of its pupils from areas of multiple deprivation gaining five or more SQA awards at Higher level.

iT’s highland heaVen It’s worth checking out if only to pencil in mentally that the massed parade of pipe bands through Balloch that acts as a grand finale to the day’s competitions takes place at 5pm.

HIGHLAND TIMES: Last year's Loch Lomond Highland Games were a brilliant success.

Two of the area’s best-loved annual Highland Games spectaculars were in the final stages of preparation as this issue went to press. And we can’t yet know whether the weather was set to be kind to the Loch Lomond Highland Gathering on July 4 – or the Balloch showpiece Games on Saturday July 18. But on past form we know that’s only a minor consideration in a day which features crowd-pullers such as classic pipe band contests, serious heavyweight contests, races and more.

Staged in Balloch Castle Country Park, the Balloch (Loch Lomond) Highland Games is a must-visit celebration of everything that’s great about traditional Scottish culture – a fusion of major sports happening and exuberant local gala. If you’ve still time to attend you can find everything you need to know about the programme at www.llhgb.com.

THIS MONTH

Registered as a charity this year, the event launched back in 1967 is now fairly rated as one of the country’s top three Highland Games, underscored by the fact that it includes the Scottish Highland Games Association World Heavyweight Championship – and the 80 metre Scottish Sprint Championship. The organisers say that quite apart from these major contests no less than 350 competitors will be competing in other events throughout the day, covering everything from athletics and wrestling to cycling and dancing. Several thousand will probably turn up to enjoy the show.

01436 676921

With the action starting at 10am, this is the classic “day out for all the family”, with plenty of stalls and other diversions to keep youngsters amused while the grown-ups watch the contestants test their mettle.

SPARKLING DISHES White vinegar is an inexpensive way to keep your dishes sparkling. Just pour white vinegar in the compartment of your dishwasher instead of a liquid rinse product.

GRANITE TOPS If you get stains on your lovely granite worktops then grab a lemon. Chop it in half and sprinkle it with table salt and rub gently. For more stubborn stains leave the salt and lemon on the stain to soak and then rinse with clean water and pat dry.

A claim could be for any number of complaints, including misrepresentation, faulty goods or breach of contract. This consumer friendly rule applies to all individual items over £100. Notably, it can even be applied in circumstances where you have only paid the deposit by credit card, so long as that deposit exceeds £100. It is important to remember that an individual item differs from one transaction. Two concert tickets at £50 each would not be covered, for example. Happy Shopping!
