A JOB WELL WORTH DOING
Battle of the Somme: Cadets from 1777 Squadron undertake a unique project to remember our brave soldiers
Dumbarton’s squadron of the Air Training Corps have taken on board a unique project which chimes with this year’s sombre commemoration of the Battle of the Somme. It was in that terrible military catastrophe that 20,000 British soldiers died and 40,000 were wounded on the first day alone. However rather than this bleak centenary the main inspiration
for a bid to identify all of the Commonwealth War Graves in Dumbarton Cemetery is the 75th anniversary of the Air Training Corps. The cadets from 1777

BALLOCH CAMPUS BEGINS
WORK BEGINS: Balloch Pupils join Councillor Michelle McGinty as work on newbuild education facilities gets underway
Balloch pupils are ending the year on a high note, after helping to mark the official start of building work on their new schools. It won’t be up and running for a year, but throughout 2017, as with other newbuild education facilities across Scotland, local youngsters will be able to see the brand new facility steadily taking shape.
The £16million development will incorporate a new St Kessog’s Primary and an amalgamated Jamestown and Haldane primary school, additional support needs base and early learning and childcare centre.
As a major new development that many argue was long overdue it’s a welcome arrival on the local scene at a time when cutbacks are being imposed in so many other areas of life.
The building, which is being constructed in the grounds of the former St Kessog’s Primary, promises to provide excellent modern facilities in a prime site at the heart of the community.

Councillor McGinty said: “It’s fantastic to see work underway on this development which will deliver a first class education campus for pupils in Balloch. “This project will move pupils from ageing buildings into brand new schools, purpose-built for modern day learning in which they will be supported to attain and achieve.” Councillor Mooney added: “The Balloch campus marks the latest phase in our school regeneration programme which has developed new schools right across West Dunbartonshire. “This development is going to enhance the education experience of generations of young people in Balloch.” The new campus is set to open next winter and is being constructed by Morgan Sindall.

Pupils at a Dumbarton primary school have become the first in Scotland to benefit from a learning hub created by Glasgow Science Centre. St Patrick’s Primary School in Dumbarton was selected as the location for the bespoke space for Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) thanks to a partnership between West Dunbartonshire Council and Glasgow Science Centre. The design is based on the Inspire and Challenge learning approach developed by Glasgow Science Centre. This project is part of a drive to provide children with engaging
and motivating learning experiences through bringing Science Centre expertise to West Dunbartonshire. The Hub, which was previously an open space between classrooms at St Patrick’s, now boasts interactive areas with a science lab, gathering space in the shape of a tree, a so-called ‘cave’ area for smaller group working, and a section with a digital screen linked to tablets for pupils to work on.
The STEM Hub at the school is used by all classes and as part of the project, staff benefi t from professional learning sessions including model lessons and experiments for delivery in the STEM Hub, and ideas on how to best utilise technology in the space. Across the area, primary schools are developing STEM hubs and this is supported through the council’s strategy to raise attainment, but the St Patrick’s project is a fi rst for the Science Centre and the council. Dr Stephen Breslin, chief executive of Glasgow Science Centre said: “We wanted to take our learning from the Science Centre and create an environment where young people and teachers could collaborate. “We want to help build scientific thinkers, and increase accessibility to science. This space very much encourages that. It’s not a traditional classroom, it’s a space where children are challenged, engaged and ultimately inspired by the wonder that is science.

GREEN DREAM SCHEME At the same time decrepit street furniture and wornout paving, along with some gnarled and unloved trees, will be replaced with items a little more empathetic.
The planners who built ancient Babylon created social spaces and green areas in their metropolis – but somehow the idea went out of fashion. We’ve the Victorians to thank for public parks, but it’s only in fairly recent years that the penny has finally dropped when it comes to intelligent town planning. In the 60’s we saw the spread of amorphous schemes in which the social forum was singularly lacking – think of Craiglang in “Still Game”, where the decrepit old Clansman Bar is the only local “amenity”. Now, in an interesting move that could be replicated in
Bonhill, Renton and elsewhere, a greenspace improvement plan is taking its first tentative step to fruition in Dalmuir. The aim is to do something about the frankly hideous stretch of concrete between the station and the multi-storey towers nearby. The local authority and the Environment Trust aim to take existing green spaces and turn them ito “pocket parks” where people can meet, socialise and play.
Crucially, local tenants groups and the community council have been fully involved. Environment Trust chairman Murdoch Cameron MBE said: “This demonstrates the benefits of partnership working between community groups and public agencies to share and develop ideas and I look forward to progressing the environmental improvements which will create new green spaces and facilities for residents in Dalmuir”. Councillor David McBride, convener of housing and communities, said: “This funding will transform the open spaces surrounding these flats in Dalmuir and have a positive impact on the community there. Project works are due to commence in the next few weeks and should be completed by the end of February 2017.

Are you a good listener who enjoys helping people? If so you could be just the person the local Citizens Advice service needs for its team of volunteers. Full training and support is given so no formal qualifi cations or experience are required, and the staff at each of the three CAB offi ces in West Dunbartonshire (Alexandria, Dumbarton and Clydebank) offer new trainees daily support within a very friendly environment. At a time when startling changes are being made to entitlements and the economy is precarious the need for advisors able to
help people through sometimes challenging circumstances has seldom been greater. Capable people who can make themselves available for the equivalent of one normal work day will be making a real contribution. What does it take to be an advisor? All sorts of people volunteer as CAB advisors and provide free, confidential, independent and impartial advice
There are some things Bureau Advisors have in common though. Besides being able to empathise with others CAB advisors work well in teams, are open minded and don’t judge people or their circumstances, and have skills to offer – including IT skills. They’re also people who are happy to commit to an average of around six hours per week. West Dunbartonshire CAB manager Joe McCormack said: “It’s stimulating, interesting and friendly work – and very worthwhile. “Volunteering with your CAB might just be one of the most rewarding things you ever do. “Trained volunteers have always been the lifeblood of our service, ordinary people who devote just a few hours of their time each week to help others in their local community.” WDCAB will be running a Basic Training Programme in January 2017 and are interviewing now. If you would like to find out more about volunteering with West Dunbartonshire CAB contact Natalie Roger at Natalie.roger@ wdcab.co.uk

“Sadly, many arrive in our care after their owners become bored with them, which could be the rea-=son we have such a high number at the moment.
“We have so many fantastic small animals in need of good homes and we would encourage anyone thinking of taking on a pet to come along to our centre and offer one of them a chance of a loving new home.” It’s maybe ironic that at a time of year when some people make ill-advised decisions about buying pets the SSPCA is striving to cope with the consequences of what amounts to cruelty. Different, of course, if an owner becomes unable to cope – but simply treating an animal as a toy to be discarded is beneath contempt. But there are also countless thousands of people who are able to give a pet a proper loving home. They’re the people the SSPCA needs to get in touch, because they are the people who won’t turn against a pet when it grows up, and will make a proper commitment. Anyone who can offer a small animal a new home – forever, not just for Christmas - is being asked to contact the SSPCA’s Dumbarton centre on 03000 999 999.

AN APPEAL FROM ESTHER Dame Esther Rantzen is calling for local people to volunteer for Childline after visiting the Scottish Parliament to mark the 30th anniversary of the vital service.
A total of 640,799 counselling sessions have been handled at the Glasgow Childline base since it opened in 1990. In 2015/16, it carried out 33,753 counselling sessions with children and young people calling from across the UK. Low self-esteem, family relationships and self-harm were the concerns most frequently raised with volunteers. Dame Esther said: “It is wonderful to see Childline thrive. “The charity saves so many lives and protects so many children from pain but we could not do it without the warmth and compassion of our Glasgow-based volunteers who are so skilled and committed.
JGS
“I have seen the difference Childline makes after speaking to many young adults who have used the service when they were children.
Childline provides a safe, confidential place for children with no one else to turn to, whatever their worry, whenever they need help. Children can contact ChildLine 24 hours a day, 365 days a year on 0800 1111 or by visiting www.childline.org.uk
“The ways children contact us has changed dramatically since 1986 but the help our counsellors provide has not. It gives children hope and literally transforms lives.” Minister for Childcare and Early Years Mark McDonald said: “The service they provide is as vital today as it was in 1986.

CHARITY'S ARDLUI BASE “I want to thank West Dunbartonshire Council, in particular Councillor Martin Rooney, and also the community for their support, which has been phenomenal.”
Ardlui Transformation: £2 million transformation set to open in 2017 into a new cutting edge factilty
The lease of the loss-making Ardlui outdoor centre is being transferred to cancer charity Rainbow Valley. The decision follows opposition from some who wanted to retain the outdoor centre, but will allow the group to develop the building at McGregor’s Landing into a residential centre of excellence for holistic therapies to support people affected by cancer.
Rainbow Valley founder Angela MacVicar set up the charity after the death of her daughter Johanna from cancer with a dream of providing the kind of facility she would have wished for.
Angela said: “We’re delighted with this decision which brings us another step closer to opening Rainbow Valley aims to spend over £2million to transform Ardlui our centre. Now the hard work begins with the launch of the into a therapy facility providing campaign to raise the £2.6million information and education, we need to create the centre and alongside complementary therapies, delivered via residential the funds we will need to support the ongoing costs. and day courses.
The centre, which is set to open in 2017, will adopt an open door policy to reach out to the local community.
Thursday 1st December
The council is supporting the venture by offering the centre rent free for the first 18 months. Regeneration convener Councillor Patrick McGlinchey said: “This is the right decision for West Dunbartonshire Council and also for Rainbow Valley. “It will bring a vacant building back into use, save Council tax payers over £1.4million over the duration of the lease, and also create a facility which is desperately needed in the West of Scotland. “We’re pleased to support this charity and I look forward to seeing the centre developed over the coming months and to hearing about the people it has helped.”

WEB-FRIENDLY TRAIN BONUS It’s probably not top of the list of must-haves for Dumbarton rail commuters, but some travellers may find the latest addition to services – wi-fi – a useful plus. After the long drawn-out saga of the Queen Street tunnel operation, which caused major commuter misery during the summer, it’s at least technically a piece of good news. The Helensburgh-Edinburgh route is the latest to receive free on-board wi-fi, as part of a rolling programme that will eventually (by 2018) see 90 per cent of ScotRail trains fully equipped. WiFi equipment has already been fitted to all trains serving Scotland’s main intercity routes, and the focus is now turning to ensure that other routes can keep connected on the move.
Travellers will soon be able to use free connections provided by supply partner Icomera. All ScotRail’s new Class 385 and High Speed Train fleets will enter service with live WiFi connections from autumn 2017. Scottish Council for Development and Industry chief executive Ross Martin said: "We need to create the conditions for productivity growth to flourish, whether in the office or at the point of production, and these improvements to WiFi connectivity being rolled out across the railway network form an important part of that.”
This month: EVERY BREATH YOU TAKE... Last month I had the pleasure of attending a fantastic performance in Cove by the singer Eleanor McEvoy, raising funds for a new defibrillator and the training of First Responders, volunteers who provide emergency care whilst awaiting an ambulance in rural areas. During the show, she applauded the efforts of volunteers and medical staff, suggesting that this was a much more important job than playing music. On reflection I wondered if this underestimated the healing powers of music and its ability to touch peoples' hearts and influence their minds.
Many important themes are addressed in music and some believe it promotes healing and well-being in many different illnesses. In our own Practice music and medicine have collided with the formation of a COPD Choir by one of our Practice Nurses. Applying the evidence that singing improves lung function she has persuaded almost 20 people to join the choir. The theory is that singing improves lung capacity and helps open airways which reduces the work of breathing and gets more oxygen into the body. The added benefits of doing this to music will surely lift their spirits - hopefully in time for some Christmas carols!

The run-up to Christmas is a crucial time for traders, and there are loads of very good reasons why customers should think of Dumbarton’s locally-run shops when looking for presents this year. Firstly with so many boutique shops that special gift is easy to find it is simply a nice place to be. Second, there’s lots of cosy coffee shops to drop in for a snack or a meal and turn the shopping trip into more than a chore.

Getting Ready
Between a new party dress, accessories and a fresh haircut, a recent survey found that most British women splash £370 on the office bash. That's before you've even bought a drink! Housekeeping magazine says that updating an old dress with fresh accessories is often the best way to go. That said, if you want to look great for party season, our high street has plenty to offer without hitting sky-high price tags.

We’ve hit the festive season once again, we should all think about maybe using our local butchers, bakers and greengrocers (seeing as there’s no candlestick makers) gift shops, toy shops and more.

Out & About
Learn to Relax
Take time to enjoy the carols, church services and pantos that are on in the area. But you can also use the time to explore some of the country walks – the excellent threelochsway.co.uk web site will give you lots of ideas. December affords some of the most impressive scenes in the wildlife calendar. Check out the the Lomond and Trossachs National Park site. So much to see right on our doorsteps.
Remember though to take time to chill, enjoy family time, going back to work comes around all too soon. Oh and a final thought, aimed at the females here. He may, and probably will, buy you something that is the wrong size, wrong colour or just plain wrong, but it is not really his fault. I mean, really: “surprise me“ is not much of a brief – so my seasonal message is ”Give a chap a chance at Christmas.”

DUMBARTON YESTERDAYS local life that would otherwise risk disappearing from the collective memory forever, and that would surely be a tragedy. That’s all the more so because, as the audience at their talk in Dumbarton Library discovered, history is never dull if it’s properly presented and seen in its proper context – as the experience of people very similar to their ancestors today.

BOOK LAUNCH: Together Anne Marshall & Mary Irvine piece together Dumbarton's colourful history
What do you get when you combine the talents of a fine writer and illustrator with the depth that comes with experienced research? For the audience at a recent book launch the answer was in no doubt – a fascinating literary but accessible guide to Dumbarton’s colourful history and folk tales. Anne Marshall was responsible for the illustrations in Anne and Mary’s Local Tales, while Mary Irvine brought her passion for history and descriptive writing skills to the project.
These two local women are steeped in the area’s rich traditions, and can easily answer questions about that recurring elephant motif in the town’s past – but can also shed light on little-known aspects of the past that deserve to be understood and remembered. In a planned series of booklets they are bringing to life a slice of

The booklet is advertised as number one in a series, so eventually we can look forward to a collection that will make a whole mass of information available to the broadest possible audience in an entertaining and interesting way. With Christmas in the offi ng a copy would arguably make a nice stocking-filler for anyone with more than a passing interest in how Dumbarton folk lived their lives in centuries past. This is the sort of ready-to-hand detail about events long passed which gives texture and meaning to street names or half-forgotten events, showing the burgh to be a place whose history is well worth exploring.

ROCK ON: Drymen's Dave Arcari (pictured) returns from his fi fth USA tour and will discuss the ups and downs of being an independent musician
How do rock, folk and blues musicians actually make a living, in a highly competitive market seething with red hot competition? One man who knows some of the answers is Drymen alt. blues troubadour Dave Arcari, who’s just given some of his own insights to an appreciative audience at a special event in Glasgow’s Hard Rock Cafe.

He has toured in several countries, but is a veteran of the US circuit, where he now has an impressive fan base – and of course that doesn’t happen by

accident, and can’t be achieved overnight. The Glasgow talk was the fi rst in a series of “Creative Conversations” organised and hosted by the Scottish Music Industry Association (SMIA) and featured Arcari in conversation with SMIA chairman Dougal Perman, discussing the ins and outs of live as a full time, independent touring musician
and songwriter in today’s music business. It was also a chance to meet some of his many home-based fans and bring them up to speed with some of the more interesting music developments stateside. Arcari recently returned from his fifth USA tour, which involved a five week trip and more than 20 gigs, taking him from the East Coast to the mid-West and back to promote his latest EP Hellbound Train. The USA tour followed a heavy UK and European summer tour schedule promoting Hellbound Train which debuted at number seven in the iTunes charts. Official showcases at SxSW in Austin, Texas and recording sessions for tastemaker Daytrotter have helped boost Arcari’s profile in the USA while ongoing UK and European tour dates have helped establish him as one of the UK's top solo artists on the circuit. Now Arcari is back at his Loch Lomond studio to complete work on his sixth full-length studio album Givers & Takers scheduled for release in early 2017.
