who's your local hero?

Councillor David McBride, centre, with Provost’s Civic Award winners and other public-spirited local people who were guests of the Provost at the Queen’s Garden Party in 2016.

Some people never get the recognition they deserve for thankless work they do on behalf of others – but the 2017 Provost’s Civic Awards aim to change all that. The annual awards celebrate residents who make a significant contribution to improving the area and the lives of people across West Dunbartonshire.

He said: “Every year the judging gets more difficult as we have so many worthy residents who deserve recognition for the great work they do.

From the shortlist Provost Douglas McAllister will select one overall winner who will be named West Dunbartonshire’s Citizen of the Year.

“I would urge residents to come forward and nominate the people who make a difference every day to residents in West Dunbartonshire.

Family-run business with over 15 years experience

Many have inspirational stories to tell that are worth hearing. Winners at an awards dinner this year will have their names added to the boards at Clydebank Town Hall, and be guests of the Provost at the Queen's annual garden party at Holyrood. Local heroes can be nominated across five categories – Arts and Culture, Sports, Community/ Voluntary (Individual), Community/ Voluntary (team) and Youth. The arts and sports awards speak for themselves – the winner will have excelled in their special field, or perhaps helped to organise a group or team.

Community/Voluntary (individual) – this will be won by a special person who has made a positive contribution to the local community. He or she may have launched new or additional activities or initiatives, or given outstanding service of the sort that benefits everyone. Community/Voluntary Champions (team) – examples could be launching new activities or clubs in the area, or otherwise using the combined talents of the group to the best possible effect. Youth Champion (sponsored by West College Scotland) – nominations are sought for young individuals who have excelled in any field or have made a significant contribution to their local community. The nominee must be local and under 18 at the time of nomination. Nominations can be made online at www.provostawards.com or complete the form available from libraries, GP surgeries, leisure centres and one stop shops.

It’s a bit like a local version of X-Factor – it’s the people who ultimately decide the outcome – except that the winners have to do a lot more than sing or dance to impress their audience. Past award winners have demonstrated sometimes humbling dedication to other people, some while battling great personal difficulties brought on by daunting health or other challenges.

ENJOY A RESOLUTION RUN in the first big public event of the year in the National Park. The two-mile route follows the pathways around the park which starts at the main gates of the park, before you take in the stunning images of Balloch Castle, the Walled Garden and of course the beautiful backdrop of the hills, before returning back to the main gates of the park at Balloch Road.

As a concession to the fact that it will have been Hogmanay the night before last this year’s annual Shortbread Run (or walk, jog) doesn’t kick off in Balloch Country Park until 10.30am. It’s the sixth to be staged annually, and is being tipped as the ideal way to start the new year on a healthy footing – even if you prefer to stroll instead of run round the course. A quick gargle of the other national drink, perhaps, and all but the most enthusiastic revellers

will be ready for a bit of exercise in the (probably very) fresh air. Event organiser West Dunbartonshire Athletics Club, invites residents from the local community along with walkers, joggers and runners to go along and lace up their trainers on the second day of 2017 to take part

The event starts just inside the main gates of the Park, on Balloch Road (opposite the bus terminus which is next to the Co-operative supermarket). If you want to have a closer look at the course you can see it at the link www.mapmyrun.com/ routes/fullscreen/1368607543 The course will be marked out with direction signs and stewards, but the organisers stress that participants will run at their own risk. Children under 11 must be accompanied by an adult, but there’s no fee or registration (or score keeping involved). Best of all, perhaps, all participants will enjoy a complimentary piece of shortbread, sponsored by Walkers.

NEW RACE SERIES SET TO RUN IN 2017 The Dunbartonshire 10k Series will replace the Polaroid Series after thirty three years, with the introduction of a brand new race. Race Director of the Helensburgh 10k, Kevin Johnson paid tribute to the loyalty and professionalism of Polaroid and in particular Paul Sheerin, the longtime Chair of the organising committee. The Polaroid Series was one of the longest and most successful sponsorships in grassroots sport in the UK and one in which the three local athletics clubs Helensburgh, Dumbarton and Clydesdale are rightly proud. The new organising team shortly hope to announce the title sponsor but have already secured significant support from running retailer, Start Fitness and footwear and apparel brand More Mile. It is expected that AG Barr's Strathmore Water will be keeping the runners hydrated and refreshed once again. Two existing races remain and one new event will be announced shortly. The dates are:

Andy collects top gong to access range of goods that some collectors would otherwise struggle to find.

Andy is pictured receiving his trophy from Steve Conner from Topps, who sponsored the award, and radio presenter Nick Ferrari, who hosted the glittering presentation evening

A newsagent from Balloch has been voted top of the shops when it comes to “collectables”, making him officially the best in the country when it comes to finding anything from trading cards to football stickers. Andrew Howell of Loch Lomond News was crowned the Topps Collectable Product Retailer of the Year at the prestigious 2016 National Federation of Retail Newsagents (NFRN) Awards at the Millennium Gloucester Hotel in London, and the success has raised the profile of his already hugely-popular shop to Britain-wide level.

Now he’s increasingly seen as a regional specialist who is “fastest with the most” in a constantly-evolving market in which there’s always some new, must-have collectable waiting to be sourced. More than just a stockist – and far more than any average newsagent – he’s pro-actively sourcing and retailing a diverse and sometimes hard

The judges said: "Over the past four years Lomond News has built up an enviable but much deserved reputation for its range of collectables. Not only does owner Andrew ensure that he has all the current ranges in stock, they are available in all formats from mega tins to boxes and multipacks and are on sale right up to the recall date. "You won't just find football stickers on Andrew's shelves as he stocks Pokemon, yu-gi-oh, magic and vanguard trading cards too. All forms of social media are used to publicise new and best selling lines while posters promoting the ranges are displayed prominently in-store. You could say that when it comes to collectables Andrew is the Topps!" The awards are presented annually for excellence in news and convenience retailing, rewarding those who have made an outstanding contribution to the sector, and for a trade professional are the highest honour.

A young Cardross fiddler has soared to national recognition by winning the Up and Coming Artist of the Year title at this year’s traditional music awards.

Possibly his most prestigious achievement to date has been winning the Celtic Connections Danny Kyle Award, and last year he recorded his first album. His talent extends to several different styles of music, but the traditional fiddle music best known through performers like Aly Bain and Phil Cunningham is still his particular favourite – and the Dundee award proves he has the ability to take his remarkable talent to still greater heights in years to come.

Ryan Young, who entered a category sponsored by the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, received the prestigious honour at an Oscars-style ceremony in Dundee after winning the event’s public vote. He has thanked the many local people who backed him from the start, particularly as their votes were critical in helping him to secure the title. He is no stranger to the limelight, having performed alongside Phil Cunningham and Paolo Nutini at T in the Park, and also reached a massive audience by playing on the BBC Hogmanay show. Success has followed on from a first class honours degree in Scottish music from the Royal

attitudes in a way that keeps people safe."

Any time now we’ll know whether all the police advice about the dangers of taking a chance on drink driving during the festive season has made a difference. Last year – 12 months after the lower drink drive limit was introduced – one in 35 drivers stopped during the festive season were over the legal limit compared with one in 50 motorists drink driving over the same period in the previous year. The new campaign reinforces the message that ‘the best approach is none’, reminding motorists

that even if you’re slightly over the limit, in the eyes of the law you are a drunk driver and a criminal. So why do some people still risk it? Justice Secretary Michael Matheson, fronting the 2016 campaign last month, said: “We led the way in the UK by reducing the legal alcohol limit and are having an effect on changing

SALMON IS ON THE MENU Association member David Blair recently caught this whopping great pike, reckoned up to 35lb in weight

Late News

we received word back that things were looking positive but the matter had still to be referred back to the Scottish Parliament for consideration “The final decision was not just welcomed, but also we believe, well deserved.

Members of the Loch Lomond Angling Improvement Association are looking forward to 2017 more than most – thanks to a pivotal decision on salmon. After a fairly complex process the Lomond system has been re-categorised as a category 2 water for the 2017 season, meaning salmon fishing is back.

concession to the group, at a time when outside angling all sorts of restrictions are being applied to the National Park in the name of conservation.

This is due in no small measure to what’s described as the “old fashioned grit and determination of the committee – and the strength of the argument.

Winning approval means their arguments are based on sound evidence, and that their responsible approach has finally paid off.

The government decision to make the critical change is a welcome

A spokesman for the Association commented: “Early in November

“The committee also avoided jeopardising any change to our categorisation through reporting prematurely the initial feedback we received as this could have done untold damage to our cause. “Trust in such situations like in other walks of life is vital, you either have it or you don’t, and when you lose it you can so easily lose the lot! “What does this mean for anglers on the Lomond system in 2017? Simply put we will once again be able to harvest limited numbers of salmon. Members will receive three tags with their permit allocation which they will be able to use between May 1 and September 30. But members are asked to keep conservation to the fore when deciding whether to harvest a fish.

January 2017 | What's Up Doc

ARTISTIC START TO THE YEAR

What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn

At this time of year it’s traditional to urge people to get in trim at the gym, but the other great seasonal theme is learning – and there’s plenty of local choice. If you’re one of the area’s legion of talented amateur photographers you’ll probably be interested in a photography session in Clydebank Town Hall on Saturday, January 14, from 1pm to 4pm. It’s an informal workshop full of “tricks of the trade” that can in some cases turn a good photograph into a great one. The session will cover, for example, cropping and straightening, brightness, contrast, highlights and shadows, sharpness and clarity – and very much more besides, for example using textures to create

“painting” style effects. You don’t need any photographic experience but you will need a fiver as admission, after which – if you bring a device loaded with some of your images – you’ll get a list of apps to download. Then on Friday, January 27, from 10am till 12.30pm, there’s a similar session which concentrates on a completely different creative genre – painting! This one is free, and will involve a demonstration of different techniques using water-mixable oils. For further details email arts.development@west-dunbarton.gov.uk.

This month: THE TIME IS NOW… How many times last year did you make a plan, only to find that you didn’t even make a start? Often for good reason in the busy lives we lead, things are put off for another day, as something else seems more urgent. As a doctor I believe that health is our first priority, and try to encourage people to take immediate action to improve their health, or wellness. It can be impressive to see people making positive changes as a result. Last year I was inspired by Andy Murray’s determination, his coach urging him that “the time is now!” throughout his

matches. If we could capture some of that grit and apply it to our physical and mental well-being, think of the changes we could make. Most of us have challenges that we set ourselves, whether it’s running a marathon, stopping smoking, losing weight, gaining weight, stopping drinking, getting help with depression or simply getting time to unwind with friends. We can’t put our lives on pause, but we can start the year without making resolutions… instead taking immediate action. What will you do differently today?

CAPTAIN TAKES THE HELM

Must be 13+

a former Scottish diplomat to the USA as its new chairman. Robin Naysmith has no doubts about how the project will pan out, predicting the steamer will be a huge visitor attraction for Loch Lomond and the wider area.

Built on the Clyde in 1953 then disassembled and taken by railway for re-assembly at Balloch, the 'Maid of the Loch' is the last major paddle steamer to be built in Britain

There have been many landmark moments in the story of how the Maid of the Loch – rescued from a rusting hulk – has been set on a steady course towards the day when she’ll sail again. But despite everything that has been achieved you still hear the odd doubt being expressed about whether all that time, money and voluntary effort has been worthwhile – and some have even described the ultimate objective, a fully operational Maid, as “a pipe dream. Of course the present gleaming (if non functional) vessel is still lacking its loch-going essential

apparatus, and even the progress made so far has been fraught with challenges. However as we head into 2017 there’s one piece of good news for the Maid’s many supporters that should go a long way towards clearing up any doubts about eventual success. The Loch Lomond Steamship Company charity has appointed

He estimates the vessel will create 25 full time jobs while attracting close to 100,000 visitors a year to Loch Lomond. John Beveridge, who founded the charity, has described this influx of new talent at the top as “fantastic news" – following on from a ÂŁ3.8million provisional Heritage Lottery grant, which needs to be topped up by a further ÂŁ1.7million to be approved. It has been argued that people prefer more modern vessels these days, and that times have moved on. But if anything the people keeping the project alive may have under-estimated the likely appeal – and meantime that gleaming keel is a constant reminder to Lomond Shores visitors that the best is yet to come.

Dumbarton & bearsden link Over in East Dunbartonshire Bearsden would be lost and the rest would become a new Milngavie and Kirkintilloch constituency.

What with Brexit and assorted other political hullabaloos during 2016 readers could be forgiven for not noticing a startling new development taking shape on our doorsteps. At Dumbarton Community Advertiser we don’t dabble in politics, but the issue in question – a plan to redraw constituency boundaries – goes beyond the usual inter-party squabbles. It’s a scheme which would see Bearsden North tacked on to

West Dunbartonshire, linking Bearsden with Dumbarton and Alexandria. If you look at the map of what is proposed you’ll see there’s a big red line dividing (currently united) Bearsden from its immediate next door neighbour, Milngavie. There are numerous other plans for areas across Scotland, and they are all designed to reduce the number of Scottish MP’s. Suffice to say both the local MP (SNP) and MSP (Labour) are none too pleased at the prospect – as polar political opposites they seem to be in complete accord on the issue.

Are you worried about debts? Are you under pressure from your creditors? Are you frightened to answer your phone or open your mail? Are you feeling stressed and unable to sleep? If you have answered ‘yes’ to any of these questions then Debt Advisory Services (Scotland) can help. If you have debts that are becoming unmanageable or you are struggling to meet your monthly payments did you know that there are solutions available to reduce your monthly outgoings or even write off a high portion of your debts. Debt Advisory Services (Scotland) Ltd isn’t just another debt management company. We work hard to find a solution that can reduce the burden of your debt.

Readers with long memories (it wasn’t that long ago really) may recall that Clydebank and Milngavie were a single constituency, represented for many years by Tony Worthington MP, so while local politicians may cavil at the lack of an apparent natural fit in the proposed new arrangement the concept is hardly a new one. Just to add a little confusion the constituency boundaries won’t correlate to the local authority boundaries, and it could be argued that unless they pay close attention some local residents won’t really know where they are. The public consultation on the scheme has been lost in the general deluge of Christmas cards and tinsel – but it’s not over yet, and runs until January 11. If you like you can add your view at www.bcs2018.org.uk.

New Year | New You | January 2017

TRYING SOMETHING NEW

Hobbies can provide a creative outlet and offer a sense of self-efficacy that may not exist in everyday life. They allow you to focus on yourself, forget about daily problems and unwind after a hard day while providing you with pleasure and enjoyment. If you can find like-minded people in your area, an outside pursuit can also be a great way to meet new people. Recent studies have shown taking up a new hobby can boost brain power in later life.

EXCERCISE

Losing weight through exercise requires more than a brisk walk or jog. Each 1lb of fat is equal to 3500 calories. On average, a 30 minute run will burn 300 calories - or a bar of chocolate. Therefore using exercise alone, to burn a mere 1lb of fat, would require almost 5 hours worth of running. Something completely unrealistic for most people. You can't out exercise a bad diet. Therefore using a combined approach, reducing your BOOST calorie intake, whilst using exercise to aid BRAIN the deficit is vital. Not only will you find POWER yourself in better physical condition, you will also reap the benefits exercise brings including increased strength and fitness. Not to mention improved sleep, increased energy levels and a happier, healthier more rewarding lifestyle. Pick a goal this year and fully commit yourself to it. Look for progression and enjoy the journey.

It is now illegal in Scotland for any adult to smoke in a private motor vehicle whilst there is a child also in the car. For this purpose, a child is considered to be any person under the age of 18.

If winter isn’t much fun for us it’s a major challenge for local birdlife. The local wing of the RSPB aim to make a difference by recruiting bird lovers to make bird cakes and hang feeders while getting some tips on garden bird identification. The Big Garden Birdwatch event at RSPB Scotland Loch Lomond is on Saturday, January 28, and is aimed at families (price £5 adult, £2.50 child; 20 per cent off for RSPB members). It’s a drop-in session running from 11am to 2.30pm, and you’re advised to wear warm outdoor clothing. For further details email loch.lomond@rspb.org.uk

The Smoking Prohibition (Children in Motor Vehicles) (Scotland) Bill was unanimously voted in by MSPs in the Scottish Parliament with a view to protecting children from harmful effects of second hand smoke. This legislation only recently came in to force on 5th December 2016. Notwithstanding that it may

not yet be widely known by the general public, you can now be given a £100 on the spot penalty fine or up to £1000 court fine, in the event you are found smoking with children in a private car. Similar laws have already been in force in England and Wales for over a year, although the stipulated fine is significantly less. Speculation suggests that it may be difficult to enforce these new laws and figures released show that there was in fact just one fine imposed in the first year in England and Wales. Only time will tell if this new ban will have any significant impact in Scotland

let's make more of rab Robert Burns had plenty of connections to West Dunbartonshire and Lomondside, but if it weren’t for stalwart long-established local clubs you’d never guess it. It’s a minor disappointment to find that on a tourism website of Burns Night events across Scotland there’s nothing listed for this area, even if those local clubs keep the flag flying in their accustomed style – and that’s surely a shame.

opportunity to revisit and salute all that’s great about Scottish literary culture while saying farewell to the year’s bleakest and most unforgiving month – “Januar’s cauld blast”, as Burns memorably described it. This year’s Dumbarton Burns Club and Alexandria Burns Club events (January 27, 28) are likely to more than live up to expectation, and other events – although not terribly accessible to the general public – may take place too. But at least at the younger end of the age scale it’s likely local

schools will make the most of the opportunity, as in the past, to flag up the importance of Burns and his poetic compatriots in a way pupils will find interesting. It’s perhaps a little unfortunate that the most “Scottish” events you can think of – St Andrew’s Day, Hogmanay and Burns Night – take place in the dark, dismal months (unlike the lucky Irish with their spring-time St Patrick’s Day) – but Burns Night is at least a “farewell to winter” and the dreichness of January. Meanwhile there’s another sidebenefit to the local celebration of the bard, with charity beneficiaries set to gain from others’ Burnsian generosity. At last year’s Dumbarton Burns Club AGM, for example, charities to receive a grant included Children’s Hospice Association Scotland, the Robert Burns Memorial Homes, and Erskine veterans’ charity – as good a way to celebrate the bard as any. A FREE SHOVEL FOR WINTER You might think the worst of winter should be over by now, but the bad news is that we could be hit by snow as late as March. So it is prudence rather than paranoia on the council’s part when it lines up no less than nine gritting vehicles (and some tractors to clear paths and footways) to deal with anything the fickle weather may bring.

A secondary effort is made to grit pavements around schools, shopping areas, clinics, sheltered housing complexes, day centres and public buildings. Residential streets are then treated “where resources allow”.

In total 4,500 tonnes of rock salt were stockpiled for the start of winter and are being used to treat priority roads and pavements – and to ensure the 380 grit bins across the community are filled.

The local council claims to be “the most pro-active in the country”, but wants local residents to “do their bit” in their own streets – and, surely, help out anybody elderly or infirm who obviously cannot manage.

Residents are being encouraged to help themselves from these bins – 300 metres from every home – to keep pathways in their neighbourhood clear. Small quantities of grit are also available from the council’s depots in Dumbarton and Clydebank. When temperatures plummet, the winter maintenance team prioritises gritting major roads.

Local News | January 2017

Debt can be the worst hangover Post-Christmas debt is pushing people in the direction of payday loans. A YouGov survey predicted a spend of well over £800 per household during the Christmas period alone. Unfortunately, much of the spending is made with credit and debit cards, and even worse with extremely expensive payday loans which may lead some families into debt well into the new year. If you do find you’ve overspent at Christmas, Citizens Advice have this advice: • Don’t panic and don’t bury your head in the sand.

and other everyday expenses. Once you’ve done all of that, you can start to work out what you can afford to pay each month to non-priority creditors like credit cards, store cards etc.

• Avoid borrowing further to try and pay off existing debt

If what you have left doesn’t cover what your non-priority creditors are asking for each month, speak to them and come to an arrangement.

• Talk to your creditors - don’t just stop payments without explaining why. They can sometimes be more understanding than you’d expect.

Only offer to pay off debts at a rate you can keep up – it is easy to be panicked into offering more than you can afford.

• Sit down and work out how much you owe and how much you need to pay your priority debts, like mortgage, rent, gas, electricity bills and council tax. Don’t fall into the trap of paying whoever shouts loudest first.

Anyone who needs advice on budgeting saving, credit and borrowing, mortgages, insurance, pensions and retirement planning can get the help of a trained money adviser through CAB's money advice service.

• Make sure you pay the priority debts first every month and then work out how much you need for food, travel to work

Grab a Great mortGaGe deal Although the long term impact of Brexit and the recent elections result in the United States on future mortgate interest rates is uncertain, action can be taken now to fix your repayments.

Borrowers with fixed rate mortgages ending as far away as July 2017 could consider getting hold of a new deal now before these low rates potentially disappear.

Next to purchasing your home, choosing the right mortgage is probably one of the most important decisions you will make when you are looking for a new deal.

Since the Bank of England lowered the base rate to 0.25 per cent, there have been a number of new two year fixed deals appearing on the market at interest rates never seen before.

Making the wrong choice about your mortgage can result in you having to pay hundreds if not thousands of pounds more than you need to pay.

Although these two year deals may seem attractive and could suit some borrowers, they may not be the best choice for those people who’s fixed rate deal ends while the UK may be experiencing potentially difficult times going through the process of leaving the EU.

THANKS FROM THE LLRB Local girl Savannah Marshall showed just what can be done for a worthy cause when she set out to raise funds for the Loch Lomond Rescue Boat. She’s a first year pupil, which limits her options a little, but she still managed to raise £50 entirely through sponsored dog walking – and had the pleasure of handing over her donation to the crew in person. Hers was one of the more memorable fundraising efforts of 2016, and perhaps her example will inspire many new ones, large and small, during 2017. To see just why Loch Lomond Rescue Boat is important you only have to take a glance at the crew’s average week, which can be pretty well summed up by the expression “never a dull moment”. Here’s a typical recent example of a “standard entry” – “Crew

assembled at the boat shed to be advised that a vessel with three persons on board had run aground onto rocks on the east side of Inchmurrin Island. LLRB launched in heavy rain and high winds proceeding to the given location. “Due to the tricky conditions we were unable to get the Rescue Boat close enough to the shore, so two members of the crew entered the water and swam ashore to ensure the safety of those on board and secure a a tow line. Once the line was secured we then towed the vessel to Cameron House Marina.” Some of the crew’s exploits over the past year have been fairly hair-raising, although they never say so in their no-nonsense

Savannah Marshall presents her fund-raising cheque to a member of the Loch Lomond Rescue Boat crew

reports, and in some cases probably life-saving. As the first resort of the police when there’s a boat in trouble the crew also carry out shore

landings when, say, someone has an accident on an inaccessible stretch near the shore. You can follow LLRB’s adventures on Facebook.

Drymen and District Local History Society’s first talk of the year takes place on 26th January and will be hosted by Dr Mark Nixon

“The 1884 Franchise Agitation in Stirlingshire” may not sound like a topic guaranteed to make for a fascinating night out – but it is. Lost in the mists of time is the Britain-wide story of how ordinary people (and the leftleaning political parties of the day) finally dragged the country a few steps closer to modern democracy with a massive public show of strength that some feared could herald French-style red revolution. Those turbulent events are the

At the root of the discontent was the fact that if you lived in a rural

area you simply had to be richer than your urban equivalent to be able to vote – which of course meant that rural politics were hopelessly skewed against the interests of the working man. We do mean “man”, of course, because the next phase of the fight for modern democracy, emancipation of women, was a battle still to be fought in the future. Britain never did have a cataclysmic revolution along the lines of France or (later) Russia, but at key flashpoints throughout the 19th century it sometimes looked as if things might head that way. Dr Nixon, using artefacts and memorabilia from the period, will show how Scots were in the vanguard of the battle to bring real change to a country ruled by the overprivileged few for their own benefit, at the expense of the many. It’s a great start to 2017 for the Society, and you can find full details of its meetings and forthcoming talks at www.drymen-history.org.uk/ programme.html
