Who’s that Guy again? It’s fireworks time again, and this year Dumbarton’s big two-hour performance takes place on the actual day we’re supposed to be celebrating – November 5. It will be worth attending, on previous form, and we’re promised a range of stunning pyrotechnics including comets, mines, spinners, hummers, whistles, strobes – and “dragon’s eggs”. But does anyone know what it’s all about? It could be the real answer is that it’s become the starting gun for the build-up to Christmas, because very few people alive today are terribly concerned with the events of more than 400 years ago.

basement, has become the only name we remember from the affair, and until fairly recently he was burned in effigy on the traditional bonfire that went with the celebration. It being the early 17th century, Guido, or Guy, was put to death in the most barbaric fashion that could possibly be devised, and the Stuart dynasty was preserved – only for Oliver Cromwell to behead Charles I after a bloody civil war a few decades later.

That’s when a conspiracy to assassinate James VI and I (“Slabbering Jamie”, as he was unkindly called by his enemies) and everyone in the House of Commons was well and truly rumbled.

As a public relations exercise for the monarchy of the time an annual fireworks display was a great success, however, and the tradition is continued to this day, even if hardly anyone has the foggiest what it’s supposed to be about.

This year’s big event is in Levengrove Park from 7pm to 9pm, with the fireworks starting around 7.30pm. If you are going, you’re advised to go in plenty of time and walk or take public transport. The venue does not offer on-site parking and many of the streets around the park will have parking restrictions in place. People are being urged not to bring their own fireworks or sparklers as these can present a safety issue, and you are strongly advised to leave pets at home and looked after - with curtains drawn.

Where do you turn to if you find you have cancer – or if someone close to you is diagnosed? Cancer, and the battle to beat it, is a fact of life for many families across Scotland, and they need all the help they can get to give them the best chance of beating the disease. Now cancer charity Macmillan is running special information and support services locally, which promise to make a substantial difference to the daily lives of many people involved with their personal fight with cancer.

CLEANFAST

Being able to easily access approachable people who are full of hard-gained knowledge and able to help can be literally life-changing for some, at a time when they are facing the trauma of medical treatment or its after-effects. MacMillan services coordinator Helen Shearer is developing a series of local initiatives, and there are already three drop-in services in Alexandria, Dumbarton

She is hoping to raise awareness of these services, as her day to day experience has shown her and her colleagues that so many local people could benefit from what Macmillan has to offer. - sometimes most of all from being able to talk to someone who understands the difficulties and can provide real assistance. People are literally invited for a brew and a blether, at Alexandria Library on Mondays from 10.30am till noon; and Dumbarton Library on Wednesday from 11am till 1pm. Macmillan’s advisers can help with everything from therapeutic massage to careers information – but most importantly are there to listen, and to help where they can. STATUE TO A FALLEN SON Everyone has heard of Sir Harry Lauder – but it could be only now that the memory of his tragic son John is guaranteed to be kept alive, 100 years after his death.

Harry Lauder and his family moved to Dunoon in 1908, buying Gerhallow House and changing the name to Laudervale four years later. John regarded it as a peaceful refuge from city life.

John Lauder had close associations with the area, and it’s thought only fitting that in this centenary year of the terrible Somme offensive of the First World War the path to his statue, and the statue itself, should be upgraded.

James Fraser, chairman of Friends of Loch Lomond and The Trossachs, said: "We are delighted to be co-ordinating this project to recognise the Lauder connection with Cowal and Glenbranter in particular, especially with such a milestone occasion coming up at the end of this year.

Friends of Loch Lomond and The Trossachs, the independent conservation and heritage charity for the park, is leading the project in Glenbranter, beginning with the replacement of rotting timber steps with a stone path.

“We are pleased we have been able to raise the funds to support it through the Friends of our park visitor giving scheme, which continues to go from strength to strength with the support of local businesses.

John died, aged 25, on December 28, 1916, while serving in France as 2nd Lieutenant in the 8th Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.

loch's flamingo future glamping pods as well as lodges, a hotel, hostel, restaurants and possibly shops. It amounts to a new “community in an area some argue is already attracting too many people at peak season, with easy links to Glasgow opening up a limitless seam of potential custom. SPLIT OPINION: The plans for Flamingo Land have been met with mixed responses

It’s not a theme park – honest – and local people will come to love once it has been bedded in and had a chance to prove its worth. That’s the argument advanced by the people behind a bold scheme to open a major leisure complex in Balloch which some fear will tip an already precarious balance too far towards mass volume tourism.

Critics of the side-effects of a clampdown on litter louting and wild camping say many perfectly responsible people who value their freedom to roam are being deprived of a basic right – and with more visits could come still more rigorous rules. Theme park operator Flamingo Land Ltd’s plans are ambitious, with facilities planned to include

When you consider more than a million people already visit the lochside shopping and leisure attraction every year it’s easy to imagine a new leisure park will drive more overnight stays. But Flamingo’s plan has attracted major initial opposition, despite claims from the firm that it understands the special environmental context of Loch Lomond and has planned accordingly. The argument has a long way to run. on Fre -s e ite in qu sta ot nt es

Next year more rigorous controls on many aspects of National Park usage will come into play, framing a steadily-evolving strategy which aims to encourage maximum use of the area but within clearly set-

out rules.

Seemingly it was always envisaged that Lomond Shores would form a key element of an archipelago of retail and visitor-tourism amenities, and the Flamingo plan would “join Shores to Balloch, probably with economic benefits for both.

Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park has greatly evolved over the last three years – and there’s even more to come. With 29 projects completed and 23 more under-way the Park authorities say few realise the scale of transformation which has taken place. To prove it they have drawn up a roster of what’s been achieved so far, as part of the effort to frame future development plans. The outdoor recreation scheme for 2013-2018 set out 69 actions and 88 aspirations, and these are said to have given the authority and its part-ners “focus and directionâ€? for ambitious further improvements.Since 2013 ÂŁ5

million has been invested, and more than 450 miles of routes have been opened up.The very long list of new routes, and new route connections, spreads right across the Park area. At the same time next year will see the start of noticeably tighter management of public access, some of which will continue to infuriate regular visitors who insist on exercising responsible right of way. However Gordon Watson, Park chief executive, thinks the real effect has been to open up access. He said:“Each one

of these projects in itself is making an important im-provement to how people can enjoy the National Park, but taken together the scale of change is significant. “When we published the National Park’s Outdoor Recreation Plan in 2013 our aim was to transform access across the Park and get more people active in the outdoors, and it is fantastic to see that happening. “This year has been significant in the delivery of these goals, as we see the work of the first few years of the Outdoor Recreation Plan bearing fruit on the ground.“It has also been significant in helping improve the health and wellbeing of both residents and visitors.

Blitz on nuisance calls Everybody gets pesky ‘spam’ calls – from fraud merchants, “survey” firms, PPI tricksters and all the rest. But despite all the sophisticated technology available to the phone authorities, are we any closer to getting rid of cold callers and infuriating pre-recorded messages? West Dunbartonshire MP Martin Docherty-Hughes thinks we’re making progress, and has commended a UK parliamentary Bill on the issue introduced by his colleague Patricia Gibson MP. It’s one of those rare subjects where there’s no obvious politics involved, and therefore the possibility that MPs of all parties will back the move to take decisive action. Mr Docherty-Hughes said: “This is an issue that is having an adverse impact on West Dunbartonshire residents and communities across Scotland. “Nuisance calls plague millions of people every year and it is wrong that rogue companies are able to avoid paying the penalty for their unlawful actions. “At best

nuisance calls can be an irritant; at worst they can be a blight on the lives of some of the most vulnerable in society, and my constituents should not have to suffer.” He added: “If passed the SNP Bill would hold company bosses personally liable for fines imposed for unsolicited marketing calls, elevating the issue of nuisance calls to the boardroom and ensuring that these companies cannot escape responsibility by going into liquidation. “If the UK government is serious about tackling the practice of coldcalling it should back the Bill and give the ICO the powers needed to pursue unpaid fines. “This would benefit the taxpayer and act as a strong deterrent to firms engaging in this practice.”

Dip clean, dry pinecones in gold or silver paint (either partially or all the way) or use a mixture of water, glue and glitter for a sparkling effect. Once dry, place on a side table or use to fill baskets and bowls for a fabulous low cost festive decoration.

A series of new local play areas have already been created at a cost of £1million and now plans for a further £2.2million of projects have been passed for no less than 23 different sites. These include new play areas in New Bonhill, Haldane, Christie Park, Tullichewan, Dumbarton Common, Overburn, St Helena Crescent, Goldenhill Park and Linnvale. This will be followed by a further

phase including a new play area in Balloch, a skate park in Bonhill and a new all-weather games area in Goldenhill Park. Councillor Patrick McGlinchey, said: “The play areas and sports pitches help foster a sense of pride and of place. We've already invested significant funding in these types of projects, we know how popular these developments are with our families, and that's why we're determined to create even more.” Councillor David McBride added: "We're working with our residents to improve communities and enhance opportunities for play and sport. “We fully appreciate the benefit of sport and play for our young people and these new developments will provide even more challenging, safe and stimulating outdoor areas for them. By the time these latest projects are complete every community in West Dunbartonshire will have access to enhanced play facilities.” Work will begin on the projects once the procurement process is complete.

making it thistle's year

It’s a bold new venture and, less than two months old, is now pitching for new members to boost the team. United Thistle Football Club is for adults with a disability aged 18 and over who live in West Dunbartonshire and the Lomond end of Argyll and Bute, and is run by a voluntary committee who meet once a month. The club operates on a not for profit basis, and the cash it needs to run its activities is raised through grant funding and fees

raised through regular football sessions. These sessions, which include practice and a short football match, are every Sunday, from 2pm to 3pm at Dumbarton’s Meadow Sports Centre, and cost just £2 – and that money goes directly into club funds. The aim of the club is to help promote mental and physical

health wellbeing and social inclusion in the community and, long-term, to be able to take part in disabled football competitions and matches. This month is important, because it sees the start of regular matches, kicking off with a five-aside format – and also because it’s the club’s first anniversary. The next year will be even more important, and the members have set challenging but realistic objectives they hope existing and new members will help them realise. Much hard work and commitment has gone into getting things to this stage, and now everyone involved is keen to build on the success and take things to the next level. The club is always looking for new members, and the committee members will be more than happy to explain to newcomers how the set-up works and how they can get involved. You can get in touch by emailing harrymccormack.unitedthistlefc@ gmail.com , and can also find out more by checking out the United Thistle Facebook page

Adding to its collection the popular shop also sells a wide range of toys and collectables, including Pokémon, stickers, board games and trading cards. The NFRN Awards nomination comes just a few months after Loch Lomond News scooped the Collectables Retailer of the Year from the grocers’ awards, and – even if it doesn’t get first prize – this shows how it is managing to excel in a niche market where attention to detail and being able to have “the latest thing” is all part of the process.

It’s not quite like any other newsagent most of us are aware of, and that’s why Loch Lomond News – specialist in collectables – is in with a shout to win a top trade award in London later this month. Federation of Retail Newsagents (NFRN).

The ever-busy lochside business won a key title in the Scottish Grocery Awards earlier this year, because of the outstanding service it gives its customers. But on November 23 we’ll find whether the shop has won the Collectable Product Retailer of the Year award from the National

It’s a title which aims to highlight the very best of the best in the business across the UK, and as a way of drawing attention to the business could hardly be bettered. More than ‘just a newsagent’,

Andy Howell, Loch Lomond News owner, said: “It is a great honour to have been selected to be a finalist in this prestigious award, and we are proud to represent Loch Lomond Shores and indeed Scotland.

November 2016 | What Up Doc?

Geese flock to the loch

What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn

This month: SHOOTING FROM THE HIP?

The sight of geese arcing across autumn skies in mysteriously perfect “V” formation is one thing – but there’s more to come. This month RSPB Scotland Loch Lomond is hosting a special opportunity to see some of the thousands of geese which spend the winter months feeding and roosting around the Loch Lomond area. You’re invited to join the team on Saturday, November 12, for an early morning woodland walk along to one of their favourite roosting spots. We’re talking “early”, because the walk starts at 6.30am and goes on till 9am – it’s the best time to see the geese.

Many people experiencing hip pain look for help and advice. It can be caused by osteoarthritis (wear and tear in the ball and socket joint itself), worn discs in the lower spine, or a condition called trochanteric bursitis.

Warm clothing, sensible footwear torches and binoculars are all essential for this fascinating wildlife foray – a hot drink in a small Thermos might not be a bad idea either.

People often suffer with trochanteric bursitis without realising it can be treated with a steroid injection. The symptoms include very localised pain and tenderness over the side of the hip, which can usually be pin-pointed. It is often made worse by lying on the same side, getting in and out of the car or walking down stairs.

Booking is essential – tel: 01389 830670 – and the venue will be confirmed when booking you can also email loch.lomond@rspb. org.uk The cost is £6 for adult and £3 for children, with a 20 per cent discount for members.

As the sun comes up, you can watch as the visitors move on from their overnight dwelling, and scan the loch to see what other winter wildlife this beautiful area has to offer.

Hip osteoarthritis however

can cause pain throughout the hip which can spread into the groin or knee. It is associated with being overweight or high impact exercise such as professional football. Managing the pain with medication is often necessary, weight loss can help and maintaining physical activity is also important. If the pain is affecting sleep or limiting activities then your doctor could alter your medication to control the pain better. Beyond that you may need to see an orthopaedic surgeon to discuss possible hip replacement. So if you have pain shooting from the hip – don’t suffer in silence - speak to your doctor!

RECOGNISED BY ROYALTY

ROYAL RECOGNITION: dedicated Autism and Asperger’s group honoured by the Queen

A group of dedicated West Dunbartonshire volunteers have been honoured by the Queen for their services to young people. The Vale of Leven Autism and Asperger’s Forum (VoLAAF) was recently one of just 20 organisations in Scotland named as a recipient of the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service.

VoLAAF was established five years ago by families affected by Autism and Asperger’s and since then has grown from a support group to a registered charity with its own centre.

Lord Lieutenant for Dunbartonshire, Michael Gregory OBE, presented VoLAAF with the prestigious award at a special ceremony, followed by a civic reception hosted by Provost Douglas McAllister .

It runs youth clubs and outings for children living with the conditions as well as offering training and respite for parents and carers. Nina Chapman, VoLAAF president, said: “We were over the moon to be nominated.

We now have around 100 people using VoLAAF and we’re completely volunteer-led with no paid members of staff, so it is great to be recognised for what we do. “Receiving the award has made it all feel real as we were all still stunned at the nomination. It was an emotional night hearing such kind things said about the difference VoLAAF makes.” Provost Douglas McAllister said: “It was an honour to welcome VoLAAF volunteers, their families and some of the West Dunbartonshire residents who benefit from the organisation’s vital work to receive this impressive award. “I must congratulate the group for all their hard work, and hope we can continue working together to improve opportunities for young people affected by Autism and Asperger’s in the future.” There are less than 200 recipients from the whole of the UK each year, demonstrating just how great an achievement it is to be named among the worthy winners.

In fact some rese arch suggests that ev ery single pound you spen d gets recycled so well by local communities that it ends up being worth £3 to the wider community .

The Importance of Legal Tyres

We are coming into the time of year when we should be increasingly aware of the importance of tyre safety. However, we are not all necessarily aware of the specific legal requirements placed on us. All cars and lightweight commercial vehicles are required to have a minimum tread depth of 1.6mm across the central three quarters of the tyre. This needs to be in a complete and continuous band around the entire circumference area. Each tyre must also be free from cuts of 25mm or more, or 10% of the width, whichever is the greater. Any cut which is deep

enough to result in exposure of the cords, no matter the length, will also render the tyre illegal. It should be noted that, under statute, both the driver and the registered owner of the car, if different, are responsible for ensuring the tyres are of a legal standard. Failing to do so could result in a fine of up to £2,500 and three penalty points, which is applicable for each individual tyre and could therefore have serious consequences in the event your car has more than one illegal tyre. This is easily avoided if you regularly check and maintain your vehicle.

the cycling revolution to tackle. Visitors were invited to use this opportunity to clear out old bikes from their garage or shed and have them recycled for good causes by donating to The Bike Station team.

JOIN THE REVOLUTION: The Big Bike Revival shows of great cycling tracks in our area

Big Bike Revival is the latest attempt to persuade people to rediscover the everyday value of cycling – even just to pop to the shops – and may have won a few converts. Staged recently at Lomond Shores it was supported by independent charity, Cycling UK, and played up the advantages of using your bike to commute, or just to get out as a couple, or family … maybe even set up an informal cycling group.

was in need of some TLC. Loch Lomond Shores’ resident outdoor activity specialists, Can You Experience, were also part of the event, with free instructor-led cycle rides taking in some of the cycle paths in the area.

Free bike health checks from The Cycling Scotland’s mobile bike Bike Stations’ gurus, Dr Bike, were trail was a fun addition, with available for anyone whose bike rumble strips, hills and challenges

They have spent the past year “getting the message out” about the benefits to cycling right across the greater Glasgow area, and have arguably done a lot to make the whole business more accessible and economic than might have been the case a few years ago. Reliable bikes for everyday cycling are within everybody’s reach. Clare Gemmell, Loch Lomond Shores’ general manager, said: “I have had such fun getting this event together. I’ve been trying out some local cycle routes, and hope that we can get a local cycle group together on the back of the event.” With over 130 years’ experience, Cycling UK (formerly called CTC) is an independent charity that works to inspire people to cycle and keep them cycling. www.bigbikerevival.org.uk

adventures of a haggis It might seem a long time since the days of sunshine and ice-cream, but if you’ve a youngster of reading age in the family Jimmy’s Summer Holiday is maybe an ideal stocking-filler for a few weeks’ time. It was written by local author Gordon Ross, who tells us: “Like many children’s books it was written for my grandchildren which gave me a lot of pleasure. “I have been collecting money for the Children’s Hospice Association of Scotland (CHAS) over many years, especially when playing with my ceilidh band The Midgies, and we have collected over £11,000 over the years. “So it seemed a good idea to donate all profits from the book to CHAS.” It’s a nice gesture from a committed fundraiser which follows on neatly from the reason that inspired him to write the book in the first place. Buying a copy gives a sizable donation to CHAS – represented locally by Robin House in Balloch – and for children this is a book worth having anyway. The book costs a fiver, stars

a haggis in one of the main character roles and involves a lot of incidental detail about animals and life abroad that children will find interesting. Sales have raised a tidy sum already, but it’s a great little book and a Christmas bonus would see the charity gaining an extra boost. The story “Jimmy’s Summer Holiday” is about three friends, a mouse, a rat and a haggis, who have a big adventure in Glasgow before finding a ship that takes them to America. There, the haggis having somehow made it through import control, they meet lots of other animals before returning

Going back to the future What are your favourite sporting memories - the moments that make the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end when you think back on them?

BACK TO THE FUTURE: Great sporting memories help to build our identity

A group who use the power of memory to make people feel more alive and “connected” to the daily world around them is gaining ground in West Dunbartonshire. Sporting Memories Network (Scotland) is dedicated to the use of the sort of special times we all remember to improve the wellbeing of people through conversation and reminiscence – because it’s arguably these one-off moments which give us our identity. SPN (Scotland) is now getting established locally, and runs social groups designed to engage with the most vulnerable in our

GENERAL BUILDERS

community – people who have become socially isolated due to health conditions that impact on their daily lives. A spokesman said: “Our aim is to improve the quality of people’s lives by boosting their confidence, self-esteem and self-worth, everyone has something to offer in a group setting whether it’s talking or listening, everyone is welcome to come along and join one of our groups.”

BUILDERS

Maybe it was meeting your idol and discovering that they were everything you hoped they would be. Perhaps it was a special match, race or moment that you can still see when you close your eyes. Maybe it was something more personal, sometimes it's not about what you are watching, but who you are watching it with. SPN (Scotland) believes in the power of stories to reignite connections between generations and help save the past for the present. Whether you know someone who could benefit from attending its groups or would like to volunteer, you can find out more about its ground breaking work and how to get involved by visiting the website www. sportingmemoriesnetwork.com.
