on brAw bonny bAnks sort of fine produce you expect to find in a part of the country famous for fish, seafood, game and top quality beef. There is soaring interest generally in home cooking with best ingredients, and for home chefs the Braw Weekend’s masterclass demos were both fascinating and useful. In roughly the sort of area you find at a typical village summer gala the Inn packed an extraordinary level of activity into the weekend’s programme.

Balmaha’s Braw Weekend attracted at least 5,000 people and instantly won for the area a whole new reputation for excellent food and drink. The dining side of things was only one ingredient of a multi-faceted weekend of entertainment which matched quality cuisine with family activities and late night live music. Staff at the Oak Tree Inn, the focus of the event, refuse to admit they were overwhelmed by public enthusiasm for this very exciting new lochside happening, but in fact the success

KITCHENS

was largely down to smooth and efficient organisation and staff work – having to plan ahead for unknown numbers is one of the toughest challenges for any licensed trade concern. It was important for this first event to work well, because it was planned to coincide with Scotland’s Year of Food and Drink 2015. This celebrates exactly the

Luxury

Melding all of these elements into one action-packed format was arguably a bold step to take, particularly for a new venture, but everything – even the weather – seemed to conspire in the event’s favour. Meanwhile the food and drink element has the potential to become ever more important as a visitor attraction in years to come, capable of drawing people from all over the country. Scotland’s National Park is now being flagged up as one of the country’s top foodie destinations, one able to attract

Luxury

Michelin-starred chefs, and this event has the makings of something as vibrant and also authentic as the Tarbert Sea Food Festival (a July event). The “theatre” of seeing chefs creating brilliant dishes and the profusion of wonderful produce lends an extra lustre to goods you’d otherwise see only in a shop. The area already has its niche producers and gourmet kitchens, but in future it could be that events like Braw Weekend will help to earn Lomondside the reputation of being in a special regional class of its own. We’ll have more on the area’s top food producers and the part they play in lochside tourism in future issues.

SWITCH ON: Christmas Lights are set to be turned on across the local area

Christmas is well and truly upon us this month, with two of the area’s most popular winter crowd-pullers happening on the weekend of November 28 and 29. The festive lights will be switched on in Alexandria’s Main Street at 5.30pm, and before that the Your Radio team will be hosting a live radio roadshow from noon until 5.30pm – and we’re promised the event will be packed with great music and a host of live performances. It’s a family-orientated

happening, obviously, and there will also be some children’s rides and other entertainment to enjoy. Then on Sunday the yuletide action moves to High Street, Dumbarton, where the festive lights will be officially switched on at 5.30pm. The Your Radio team will also provide the musical backdrop for

It includes special attractions including ice skating, a snow globe, 100 market and craft stalls and real reindeer – and performances by local groups. Before any of that happens there’s also the switching on of the festive lights at Loch Lomond Shores on November 15, from 10am to 6pm, with a Christmas food market, music and other attractions. All of these events focus on shopping, and aim to give local people a range of interesting gifts to choose from in a lively and friendly festive setting – which on past form will be busy but not the “pandemonium you get at the big out of town malls.

SOVEREIGN BLINDS

rAil chArm from Aisling

RAIL PEOPLE: Dumbarton Girl, Aisling Naughton, with Scotrail Chief Phil Vester (left) and Transport Minister, Derek Mackay (right)

Dumbarton girl Aisling Naughton has been congratulated by a government Minister and a Scotrail chief after graduating from a pioneering railways initiative. The 18-month-long scheme - a UK rail industry first - saw 15 apprentices aged between 16 and 23 work towards achieving a Level 2 Scottish Vocational Qualification in Customer Service as well as a Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.

It’s a signal to aspiring young professionals that there’s a clear career route available for anyone entering this vital public service industry that can open paths to a variety of different job options in the future. During the programme, they

were trained, paid and given placements in four key frontline customer service roles - station booking office, gateline, ticket examiner and on-train hospitality host. The scheme is part of a wider bid to get young adults involved in potentially rewarding careers in Scotland’s busy railroad industry. Aisling said: “My brother was one of the first apprentices to take part in this programme and when I saw how much it improved his confidence, I was inspired to apply. I thoroughly enjoyed it and have learned so much over the past 18 months.” Phil Verster, Managing Director of the ScotRail Alliance, pictured left, said: “We are extremely proud of our apprentices. “They have put in a great deal of work over the last year-and-ahalf and overcome a number of challenges, as well as getting the most out of the experience.” Transport minister Derek Mackay, right, added: “May I offer my congratulations to everyone graduating from ScotRail’s Modern Apprenticeships programme."

Judo girls to help clubs Local judo clubs are soon going to benefit from newly-trained female helpers, thanks to a pioneering venture.

of barriers which prevent young girls from getting involved in sport and physical activity, so this girls-only programme will certainly help to encourage more of our pupils to get active.

A girls-only judo club has been set up in Clydebank High as part of a JudoScotland project, but its impact is expected likely to be felt in Dumbarton and beyond.

“It will help to engage with pupils of all ages and abilities, and most importantly will be fun. I’m sure it will be a great success.”

This is because the 20-week course is set to create a host of local talent, while getting more young females to grips with the principles of judo from an early age. A year on from Glasgow 2014, JudoScotland is aiming to capitalise on the sport’s success at the Games – when the team secured 14 medals – to encourage more girls to get active. The lunch time classes, which will be run with the support of the school’s Active Schools coordinators, will focus on physical movement similar to dance, introducing judo gradually to maximize buy in.

JUDO: Now women in the local area can take advantage of the Judo classes 10 mins down the road in Clydebank.

Workshops will also be incorporated into the sessions to encourage participants to enjoy a healthy lifestyle. Education convener Councillor Michelle McGinty said: “Sometimes there are a number

Learning the basics of a legendary self-defence technique is one thing, but the project is also about encouraging healthy exercise – given that under half of girls aged 13 to 15 currently reach the target of an hour’s physical activity per day, Education services depute convener John Mooney said: “Since the Commonwealth Games last year, awareness of a number of the lower profile sports has grown, so I’m delighted to see these judo sessions introduced at Clydebank High.”

club’s sAlute to Andrew

This month sees one of the area's oldest and most distinguished clubs celebrating a sometimes undervalued Scottish occasion in suitable style.

The Alexandria Burns Club was founded in 1884 - the year the British army tried, and failed, to rescue General Gordon in Khartoum - and has been going strong ever since. It has a busy social programme, but obviously two particular events tend to take precedence, and these are Burns Night on January 25 and St Andrews Night, which is on November 30 but

will be celebrated by the club this year on the more convenient November 27. The November date is still a Cinderella celebration which for many of us is hardly observed, if even remembered, while most of us have at least been to the odd Burns Supper over the years. Possibly it's because the timing isn't great, sandwiched between Hallowe'en and Christmas, but

when you consider what our near neighbours the Irish and English manage for their patron saints' days it's arguably a shame more of us don't follow the Alexandria Burns Club's example. Last year 80 members and guests gathered at Vale of Leven Bowling Club to enjoy the occasion, which was reputedly one of the best of recent years. New club president Bryan Weir was delighted to welcome among top table guests the 1960 Commonwealth Games gold medallist Lachie Stewart - whose appearance chimed perfectly with last year's Glasgow Games extravaganza. Highlights of the evening included a memorable portrayal of the legendary I M Jolly by real-life Reverend Ian Miller ... and there were many other performances, musical and whimsical, besides. getting fit for christmAs

FIT CHRISTMAS: Dumbarton Athletic Club is encouraging people to come along to get fi t for Christmas.

One of the area’s best known running clubs is extending an open invite to anyone with an interest in the sport to go along. We’re all familiar with the post-Christmas health regime syndrome, where drastic action is taken to counterbalance the excesses of the festive season. But wouldn’t it be great if it were possible to maintain a good level of fitness right through the Christmas break by getting into trim this month and next?

Dumbarton Athletic Club is happy to welcome newcomers whether they seriously aim to take up running, or merely want to get fitter, with the message “come along and try us out”. This month’s traditional big event for the club is the Lochaber Half Marathon, but there’s a busy running and social calendar

running right through the year – and there’s a very popular Christmas night in Dumbarton in December. Just what can be achieved from the running side of things can be gleaned from testimonials provided to the club by people who definitely gained from experienced help and advice. One runner who thought he had reached optimum fitness through self-training found that he can now run faster and longer over a greater number of days. That’s obviously an example of someone who wants to push their frontiers, but many with a simple desire to get healthy exercise and feel fit are also likely to benefit. There’s the opportunity to get involved in demanding events including cross-country and relay races, but also a regular programme of runs designed to appeal to a broad cross section of members. If you haven’t run for some time, there’s also a beginners’ group designed to allow you to find your own level of ability at the right pace. For full details visit www.dumbartonaac.com

Makeover at the Shores

with

Dr Nick Dunn

This month:

Firms competing for the honour of refurbishing the visitors centre at Loch Lomond shores will soon find out who has won the contract. It’s an important revamp project which has been authorised with little publicity, but which will mark the next step forward for a development launched almost 15 years ago. The team charged with giving it a whole new look will be designing a complex which is also planned to include a bar-restaurant feature, for which there’s already an unnamed preferred tenant. Meanwhile the idea is not only to create a centre which justifies the word “iconic” but which can also serve a range of potential uses. The original glass and steel centre

cost around £1.5m, and features exhibition space and a 350-ft timber colonnade. As a venue which relies on a “wow” factor to differentiate it from standard malls, it maybe goes without saying the design will have to be a bit special if it’s to match expectations. It will also be trying to reinforce the centre’s bid to appeal to visitors on a year-round basis, with festive shopping and special themed events in the build-up to Christmas and regular attractions during spring to autumn.

multi trade installation service. They really do tick all the boxes – and judging from the number of recommendations from their customers, it’s a winning combination.

Owners Tom and Helen have been so inspired by the stunning new ranges from their long time German kitchen manufacturer Pronorm, they have just added a further two complete room sets to their beautiful showroom.

With a very busy schedule ahead of him Tom puts Affordable Luxuries growing success down to their blend of detailed personal service and their long term partnership with Pronorm. “Even though the industry has seen some challenging times in recent years, Pronorm continues to buck the trend by investing heavily in new state of the art designs with superior finishes and a beautiful range of styles and colours. The most recent array of new products was unveiled by Pronorm in September this year and the next few months will see some fantastic additions to our already vast product offering”.

The very essence of what’s on offer from Tom and Helen is the ability to find exactly the right kitchen for you. After almost 15 years in business in the Inverclyde area, they bring a wealth of experience from the showroom to every home they work in. Affordable Luxuries philosophy is simple - they create a perfectly designed kitchen every time which is tailored to the customer’s exact requirements. They plan the most efficient use of space, the most suitable appliances mixed with their beautiful furniture, a host of worktop options and accessories with a big emphasis on value for money combined with a fully project managed

One of the main details that set Affordable Luxuries apart according to Tom is his team. “David manages the showroom and he is responsible for all design aspects of the business. He is a fantastic kitchen designer with a wealth of experience. Add in a team of great tradesman carrying out the

installation work and with me project managing the full installation we have a formula here that works exceptionally well and we have many happy customers and a business thriving on recommendations to prove it. Another big part is the fact that all our kitchens are built to order and are hand finished. Our customers dream kitchens are manufactured in Germany in a factory with £20 million pounds worth of the latest state of the art engineering with expertly trained staff to make their individual kitchens perfect. When you look at the quality of our kitchens compared to our competitors our customers can easily see the quality, depth of service and value we provide as we are also very competitive when it comes to the cost”. While their website is full of praise from satisfied customers, little will substitute for seeing the quality with your own eyes. A visit to the enhanced showroom will fire your imagination and inspire your plans. Without a doubt a new kitchen from Affordable Lux-uries will definitely add style and value to your home.

As this issue goes to print tens of thousands of people are bracing themselves for the onset of winter, far from homes they may never see again. For months now we’ve watched as hundreds of thousands have fled the horrors of war, often leaving almost everything of value behind in a bid to reach freedom and safety. In Scotland West Dunbartonshire has been to the fore in the effort to stem the disaster from the outset, putting in place practical steps aimed at ensuring the response is workable and effective. Now collection points have been

set up in Dumbarton, Bonhill and Clydebank to allow people to make donations to the Syrian refugee crisis, and they’ve been taking donations of warm clothes and sleeping bags for men, women and children. These vital donations are then distributed by international aid agencies which are already involved in providing aid to refugees throughout Europe. The collection points can’t accept food, toys, toiletries,

bedding, furniture or summer clothes. – it’s all about the sort of gear people of all ages need to get through the winter. Backed by the council, and opposition councillors, the effort is part of West Dunbartonshire’s overtly proactive response to the crisis, and local people – many of whom have taken the initiative by themselves – are being urged to donate what they can. They’ve got the assurance that everything they give will be put to good use, and that it will make a difference. The collection points and opening times are as follows: Concord CE Centre, College Way, Dumbarton. Monday to Friday 9am - 9pm, Saturday 9am to 12noon. Bonhill CE Centre, Ladyton: Monday to Friday 9am - 4pm, Tuesday 6pm – 9pm. The council is undertaking a range of actions to bring aid to Syrian refugees, and to read more about this go to www. west-dunbarton.gov.uk/council/ newsroom/news-and-pressreleases/2015/september/councilagrees-to-support-syrian-refugeecrisis/.

As a civil lawyer, Parental Rights and Responsibilities (PRRs) form a large area of my daily practice. They make it a parent’s responsibility to safeguard and promote your child’s health, development and welfare and to provide direction and guidance in a manner appropriate to that child’s stage of development.

There’s a great chance to hear one of our most interesting contemporary novelists discuss his work – and read from his latest novel – in Alexandria Library this month.

In the event your child is not living with you, it is your responsibility to maintain a relationship and have direct contact with them on a regular basis. There are corresponding rights in order to allow you to fulfil these responsibilities. These include the right to regulate your child’s place of residence,

Doug Johnstone is a multitalented writer who will be entertaining the audience with guitar-accompanied songs thematically linked to his stories. He’ll also be reading from his latest book, The Jump, and if you like what you hear you could always buy a copy and ask him to sign it – in nice time for a Christmas gift for someone, perhaps. This Books Trust event is on Thursday, November 26, 7.30pm to 9.30pm.

control, direct or guide the child’s upbringing, as well as to maintain contact if they are not living with you. Who then has PRRs? Unsurprisingly, mothers automatically do. However, fathers automatically do only if married to the mother at the time of birth or they are named on the birth certificate of a child registered after May 2006, when the Family Law (Scotland) Act ’06 was introduced. Unmarried fathers registered prior to this date do not have PRRs. A father can obtain PRRs with the mother’s agreement or, if agreement is not forthcoming, he can apply for a Court Order imposing them upon him.

Public Relations officer Fay Young says: “ The Army Cadets is about fun, friendship, action and adventure. We inspire young people to challenge their limits and go further in life, no matter what they aim to do. “Many young people are missing out on the challenges and

adventures that could transform their lives. Joining the Army Cadets can change that. We give young people from all walks of life fun, friendship, action and adventure. “We inspire them to challenge their limits and go further in life, no matter what they aim to do. We challenge young people to learn more, do more and try more. “Our volunteers get to know each cadet individually and

Cadets and adults keep telling us 'It's the best thing I've ever done'. “ The Army Cadet Force is one of four cadet organisations sponsored and supported by the Ministry of Defence, the others being the Combined Cadet Force, the Sea Cadet Corps, and the Air Training Corps. timely blitZ on tobAcco As we head towards Christmas an extra effort is being made to stress the fact that sales of tobacco or alcohol to under-18’s are illegal.

Every tobacconist in the area has now been visited by trading standards to provide support and advice on how to deal with people trying to buy cigarettes for under 18s. Meanwhile very much the same message applies to alcohol, another big problem area.

For the last few weeks the local health and social care partnership along with trading standards have been getting the message over by joining forces with local retailers. The main thrust of the campaign is that buying for under-18’s can lead to a criminal record. A stark warning that ‘Smoking from a young age takes 10 years off your life’ is also part of the attempt to reinforce the dangers of tobacco. Signs carrying these warnings are being installed outside every premises in West Dunbartonshire which sells cigarettes. The campaign has also been highlighted to every secondary school pupil across the area with relevant information and advice provided. A survey of over 50 local shops

It can be difficult catching an adult in the act of buying for under-18’s, and at this time of year there’s obviously much more alcohol in general use – so posing an extra risk. Some licensed retailers feel they have to shoulder all the responsibility for ensuring nobody cheats the system, but they still support efforts to chip away at these longstanding problems.

Two of the local area’s three Foodshare outlets have “moved”, and the organisers want everyone to know all the details. At a time of year when most of us can hope for some relaxation and enjoyment not everyone is so fortunate, with some more concerned with simply having enough to eat than with festive fine fare. Meanwhile the local Foodshares are appealing to generous Community Advertiser readers to help them out any way they can – with the message that even a

little means a lot. The Alexandria Community Centre Foodshare is on Thursday mornings from 10am to 11.45am, while at Dumbarton Concord Community Centre it’s on Friday mornings from 11am, to 12.45pm. There’s a Foodshare in Clydebank, too, held at Clydebank Radnor Parish Church on Friday afternoons from 1pm to 2.45pm. Later there’s a fun, keep-fit way

of helping Foodshares when Dumbarton Amateur Athletics Club stage a run on their behalf. The five mile run is on Saturday, November 21 at 10am, starting from Dumbarton’s East End Pavilion and, unusually, the price of registration on the day (from 9am) is £10 worth of groceries. This will appeal to a lot of DAAC members, but chances are many other local people – including some that perhaps do only a little leisure running – will want to take part too. The run underlines the fact that to provide a service that allows communities to ensure everyone gets enough to eat the public have to do the job themselves. And because we are approaching Christmas the Foodshares are also appealing for new and nearly new toys, so that every child has the chance to feel special. The Foodshares are also welcoming donations of hats, scarves and winter jackets, to help local families make it through the winter with proper clothes for the weather.

• 200g dark chocolate • 50g pistachios • 40g pecans • 1 tbsp pumpkin seeds • 20g dried mango • 50g dried, ready to eat apricots

Preheat the oven to 200 Fan/220 C. Break the chocolate up and tip into a bowl set over a pan of simmering water to melt. Scatter the pistachios, pecans and pumpkin seeds in a single layer on a non-stick baking sheet and put into the oven to toast for about five minutes. They can burn very quickly, so keep a close eye on them and take them out as soon as they turn golden and start to smell deliciously toasty.

Unit 5, Ash Road, Broadmeadow Ind. Est, Dumbarton G82 2RS

Quarter the apricots and chop the mango into 1.5cm pieces then mix the fruit, nuts and seeds into the melted chocolate and pour onto a tray lined with baking paper. Chill in the fridge until set and break into chunks.

This healthier version of rocky road is packed full of dried fruit, nuts and seeds. Pecans, pistachios and pumpkins seeds, toasted to give them extra flavour and bite, contrast deliciously with sweet, chewy apricot and mango, all wrapped up in dark chocolate. These ingredients offer lots of nutrients too, making a small but useful contribution towards the amount you need in a day. The chocolate is a good source of numerous minerals, especially iron, while the fruit and nuts provide fibre, vitamins A, B-6, C and E, as well as magnesium and potassium, and more iron from the apricots. Easy recipes like this one are used in nutrition workshops at Maggie’s Glasgow, part of the programme of free practical, emotional and social support that the Centre offers to people with cancer and their family and friends. This chocolate treat, taking just minutes to make, would be the perfect pick-me-up to go with a cuppa. For more info visit: www. maggiescentres.org/our-centres/ maggies-glasgow

fAcelift for old AcAdemy

The one-time Dumbarton Academy appears to have been saved from the fate suffered by so many crumbling buildings around Scotland. A grant of £500,000 from Historic Environment Scotland will bring the formerly magnificent A-liste facade of the iconic former school back to something like its original glory – as part of the plan to move 500 council employees to new town centre offices. The building dates from 1865 – the year Dumbarton’s Provost sent a letter to the US Government bemoaning

Abraham Lincoln’s assassination. It was gutted by fire in 1976, and until now has risked becoming a mere relic of long-forgotten Victorian prosperity and civic pride. The half million pound makeover will see the roof rebuilt and original stonework repaired, as well as a refurbishment of the present main entrance doors. But rather than emerging as a

spruced-up museum piece the revamped building will also include a public area with multiuse civic space, meeting rooms and training areas – as well as a “substantial extension at the rear hosting new office space. Meanwhile in a buy now-save later move the new council offices are set to cost ÂŁ15.7million, but will mean a projected saving of ÂŁ300,000 over the present arrangement. Council leader Martin Rooney said: “This is an iconic building at the heart of Dumbarton town centre and I’m delighted that Historic Environment Scotland has recognised the importance of the work we’re carrying out. “In restoring the old Academy Building to its former glory, not only will the council bring this building back into use but it will also help provide a catalyst for further regeneration activities in the town centre.â€? The council credits itself with taking “a bold decisionâ€? to regenerate the site, while the alternative would have seen the building remain moribund and increasingly irrelevant.
