Tracy Brittan has raised thousands of pounds for CHAS and its Balloch hospice Robin House, volunteering tirelessly and taking part in a myriad of fundraising events in the community and beyond. She was first inspired to help CHAS after the charity launched its appeal to build Robin House at Loch Lomond in 2002.

Tracy has combined her volunteering with working fulltime, and being a mum and now a gran. Over the years, she has given her time to support fundraising events across the country, staffed CHAS information stalls and arranged bucket collections.

“I lost a baby 15 years ago after miscarrying at 20 weeks. When I saw that CHAS were looking for volunteers, I wanted to help. I really admired the work of CHAS and thought I might understand a little bit of what the families were going through.”

Peace campaigner Margaret Harrison was the subject of a fascinating and inspiring talk given to Lennox Heritage Society recently by guest speaker Mary Irvine. The colourful life and career of this redoubtable local activist included a look at her involvement with Dumbarton People’s Theatre, a lifelong association which continued even after she was no longer able to continue performing.

With her cat, Sooty

Margaret was a longstanding member of the Leven Litts winter group in Alexandria and won many national competitions for her poetry as well as having them published. But it was Margaret and her husband Bobby’s work for the Peace Movement that many remember most, particularly as it led to them both being awarded Freeman of Dumbarton – an honour very seldom bestowed. After Margaret’s passing in 2015, aged 96, the Leven Litts decided to honour the memory of this outstanding woman, poet and campaigner, by dedicating a shelf to her in the Glasgow Women’s Library in the poets section.

way – and Margaret’s story is one which will bear telling in detail. It seems certain that at a time when new interest is being shown in the lives of remarkable local women her place in West Dunbartonshire history is very secure. Hers was such an action-packed life that even Mary was unable to do much more than trace the main highlights, and it’s inevitable people will remember her most from particular contexts – whether with the theatre, her literary interest or her commitment to the cause of peace.

The Heritage Society members say the talk was a very thoughtprovoking evening, dealing as it did with a larger than life The Lennox Heritage Society personality who – implausibly – members note it would have been much better to have a local museum insisted on describing herself as “just a wee housewife”. record her career in a conspicuous

DIXIE’S NOSE fOR TROUBLE Tobacco smuggling is a mug’s game when Dixie the Spaniel is on the prowl – as we saw in a recent swoop on shops selling illicit merchandise.

They advise that consumers should purchase from trusted sources and ensure they know who they are buying from. Graham Pollock, the council’s manager of regulatory services, said: “In recent times, the increasing price of cigarettes may have tempted some smokers to buy illicit tobacco. We always encourage our local residents to choose legitimate goods and services which can be bought from our vast majority of honest local traders in West Dunbartonshire.”

Dixie – a highly trained sniffer dog – and her handler Bobbie Cranie were joined by officers from Police Scotland and Trading Standards officers when a number of premises across West Dunbartonshire were searched.

Trading Standards point out that far from being a victimless crime, cheap tobacco makes it easier for young people to start smoking, takes advantage of people on low incomes and can help fund organised crime.

The exercise netted a haul of illegal goods from one shop, and followed a number of tip-offs. Trading Standards team leader Tony Cairns said: “Traders who sell illicit tobacco will often conceal it from view and, on this occasion the seized products were hidden in a storeroom. “They were not labelled in accordance with health warning and tax duty laws and further checks will now be carried out to establish what additional harmful substances they might contain.”

Trading Standards say this operation again highlights the potentially illicit and unsafe products that are entering the UK market.

The aim is road safety, and they’re likely to have a significant effect on local life.

Council leader Martin Rooney said: “Research shows that speed significantly increases the chance of pedestrians and drivers being injured in a collision, so this was a move that we were very keen to make.

This means streets like Shandon Crescent and Brown Street in Haldane, and Dalvait Road in Balloch, will get road calming measures their residents are said to have wanted.

“The mandatory 20mph limit will improve road safety for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians and will also encourage more people, including children and the elderly, to walk and cycle.”

According to the Scottish Government’s Safer Scotland initiative, drivers are seven times as likely to kill a pedestrian if they hit them at 30mph as opposed to 20mph. While 20mph limits are already in place near schools across West Dunbartonshire, the new zones will begin to be introduced across residential areas during 2017/18. Some argue that slower traffic on residential roads has a knock-on effect on traffic congestion, but

WELL HELLO TO ‘PC’ DOLLY

Monday 3rd April, 12-2pm Concord CE Centre, Dumbarton

“I am absolutely delighted to sell these dolls. It’s such a materialistic and image-led society these days.

Tombola Home Baking Face Painting Craft Stalls Raffle Lucky Dip Tea/Coffee Sweet Cones

They’re history, because the award-winning dolls now sold by RSPB at Loch Lomond Shores are exemplars for modern concepts of what a child’s role model should be – called Lottie, this doll is not a Barbie girl, and is age-appropriate (3 to 9) without make-up, high heels or jewellery, and has a normal child-shaped body. Contrast that wholesome image with the classic boy’s toys – used

to be a battle-scarred commando, armed to the teeth, but is more likely now to be an eco-warrior trying to save the planet – and it’s obvious things are changing. Gayle Haddow, RSPB Retail Manager, said: “Since launching, the dolls have won numerous awards and global recognition. “The dolls are just part of a range of children’s products available at the RSPB shop, with items

By making them available in the community and training volunteers to administer lifesaving care in the minutes before an ambulance arrives, the chances of survival from a heart attack can be doubled. It’s an emergency that can strike without warning in the most awkward places, as happened to one Glasgow man who collapsed while refereeing a hockey match.

A short training session demonstrated the procedure to be followed in the event of an individual suffering a heart attack, initially summoning help, the simple use of the defibrillator and then administering CPR until help arrives.

The crucial initial minutes are the most important, and defibrillators have proved their worth time and again.

While there’s work to be done rolling out the equipment the training side of things is obviously just as important.

Balloch Library offers a newly refurbished setting providing a modern setting to relax, read and research.

Balloch Library has reopened with the claim that it’s the first centre outside Glasgow to offer residents free use of 12 computers to access online services. It’s a sign that the estimated £111,000 makeover was about more than comfort and modern upgrading – although that’s certainly a factor too – with much of the effort going into making the library a useful resource for the digital age. Library staff will use the computers to deliver Quest IT courses for residents who are keen to update their skills and offer help and advice to people

COUNCIL ELECTIONS

ANDREW MUIR INDEPENDENT CANDIDATE

th

Andrew Muir is standing as an independent candidate in the Dumbarton ward. He is doing this as a matter of conscience due to the underlying culture of dishonesty in local politics. In the last five years several councillors have banned him from their surgeries and blocked his emails whilst in the 2016 Holyrood election campaign his article on the NHS was censored by the press. The NHS is his main issue. The health board is unelected and has closed many bits of the Vale of Leven Hospital. There are no effective safeguards against ill treatment in hospital or care homes and this area has one of the worst life expectancies in the UK. He is on the board of Voices of Experience (a Scottish mental health charity), on the committee of Carers Scotland, and has spoken at the Carers Parliament and at Cross-Party Working Groups on Mental Health, Carers and Human Rights at Holyrood. He has

corresponded with the United Nations on the incompatibility of forced treatment with human rights law. Since coming to Dumbarton in 1982 he has been a regular member of St Patrick’s Church and campaigns against abortion as he feels strongly that it is not right for many innocent babies to be killed each year. He has been a member of Silverton & Overtoun Community Council for several years and has been involved in many planning issues including the “Save Posties Park” campaign. As a former school teacher he takes a keen interest in education standards and attends the Parent Council meetings at his daughter’s secondary school.

unfamiliar with computers, and there’s free access to Wi-Fi. In addition to the digital improvements the front entrance of the library has been redesigned for improved access, and a public toilet has been installed for the first time. Education convener Councillor Michelle McGinty, said: “The newly refurbished library now provides a fantastic, modern As a contract pensions actuary he is concerned about the very generous pension and salary packages paid to high ranking council officers whilst the area has large unemployment, a lack of affordable homes and food banks. Local democracy is in a poor state and needs to be overhauled. The results of consultations are routinely ignored (e.g. the site of Bellsmyre for OLSP was chosen by only 15% of those who voted). Decisions made are not democratic as instead of 22 councillors making a decision, it can be decided by 2 or 3 councillors who will then use the party whip to engineer a block vote. The banning & censuring of councillors under their Code of Conduct is biased and arbitrary. Independent councillors have been banned simply for criticising a council officer whilst the ruling party councillors will escape punishment for political reasons. If elected he will aim to remove these practices. Dumbarton Sheriff Court is an expensive and imposing building but it does not give justice

“With more vital services going online, lack of access and understanding of technology can create huge divides. The library’s position at the heart of the community means more opportunities for local people to engage with computers and technology, regardless of their age, ability or resources. We look forward to seeing it fl ourish.” Plans are now progressing to offer a Macmillan Cancer drop-in service in Balloch Library from around now, where trained volunteers will be available to provide information and emotional support to anyone affected by cancer. when an individual complains about the state. A local family did not get justice as a result of the actions of a bin lorry driver in Glasgow. Our legal system is antiquated and unfair. We need to scrutinise the decisions made and fight other injustices too. Andrew remembers the days when the High Street used to contain a quality butcher, greengrocer and stationer. Now we have many empty shops and an unhealthy look with venues promoting smoking, gambling, borrowing, drinking etc. In order to encourage entrepreneurship and employment this area needs to be open and presentable. Whilst not campaigning Andrew’s main hobby is chess – he won a Gold Medal at the 1998 Chess Olympiad in Russia and currently runs the Glasgow Schools Chess League.

PARK IS SET TO GET BETTER Exciting changes will be taking place in Levengrove Park as a result of West Dunbartonshire Council securing £2.8 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund’s Park for People Programme. The Friends of Levengrove Park recently held a Walk in the Park where members of the community went along to find out what improvements are going to be made. Friends chairwoman Linda Adam said “Despite the extremely cold weather and major sporting fi xtures taking place, almost 40 people attended. However, the Friends group is very keen to let the wider community know what developments are going to take place”. The Friends group has created plant beds using a Volunteering Matters Action Earth grant, and

Do you need an electrician? Call us now on 07702 536 877

Here are just some of planned improvements: • There will be new park gates and a notice board to help people find their way about • There will be restoration work at St Serf’s Church to bring its landscaping up to scratch • The Kilmahew Fountain, also to be restored and will become a new focal point

• The wellhead and cistern of Shier’s Holy Well will be restored • A new contemporary pavilion, with café, and play area within easy reach • The Arboretum and the war memorial will be brought back to good condition • A gazebo will be created on the site of the former band stand

are also planting a community orchard, using council funds. Despite all this work there will still be plenty of space for big and popular events Levengrove manages to accommodate so well. Linda said: “The ideas for the war memorial plant beds and community orchard came

from consultations and surveys undertaken with users of Levengrove Park over recent years.” Anyone interested in becoming a Friend should email friendsoflevengrovesecretary@ gmail.com or telephone 07803172951.

A new base for Advice

What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn

This month: TUNING YOUR BODY...

West Dunbartonshire Citizens Advice Bureau has relaunched its Outreach Service at the Vale Centre for Health and Care in Alexandria. The new service is based in the Oakview Medical Practice every Monday from 9am until noon, and will now also include specialist advice workers who can assist on issues such as benefit entitlement and debt problems. Manager Joe McCormack said: “We are making every effort to be as accessible as possible and we are already looking at the potential for further outreach points. We are grateful to Oakview Practice for enabling this to happen by giving us access to their waiting area. As well as general advice covering topics such as employment

problems, housing issues, consumer disputes, homelessness, relationship issues, etc, staff can negotiate, either by telephone or in writing and when required can represent clients at tribunals. The service is not limited to Oakview patients, and the CAB can ensure all clients get privacy too. The CAB service is provided by a pool of 50 volunteers assisted by a team of support workers. All volunteers must participate in a Basic Training programme, which consists of 32 two-hourly sessions covering the whole range of social welfare issues dealt with by the Bureau.

Modern car technology is becoming increasingly clever. But when I take my car for a drive, I don’t expect it to become more efficient, repair itself or become faster. Amazingly however, that’s exactly what the human body does in response to regular use, especially when it is pushed beyond its limits. Exercise: we all know it’s supposed to be good for us, but do we stop and wonder how it is that the body can adapt so well? In people of all ages, regular exercise trains the body to get more out of the

heart and lungs by increasing lung capacity, strengthening the heart and improving blood flow. It strengthens muscles and bones, fine-tunes our hormone levels, boosts immunity to infection and possibly some cancers, and gives us greater stamina and reduces tiredness. As the days get longer and brighter over the next few weeks, consider improving your body’s performance by giving it some exercise. It’s just a pity that cars haven’t quite got to our advanced level yet!

They had achieved a Quality in Befriending Excellence Award for their efforts helping isolated elderly residents in West Dunbartonshire. The award demonstrates good practice throughout their volunteer befriending service, and implicitly recognises special commitment. Liz Watson, chief executive of Befriending Networks, said: “Congratulations to the befrienders and everyone

involved at WDCVS on achieving their Quality in Befriending Excellence Award. “This is no mean feat, as the service becomes just one of 12 in the UK to have received the award at excellence level. “Achieving QiB Excellence means that the service has procedures in place to ensure that its work provides the best experience for everyone involved and verifies that standards of good practice have been met and upheld.”

The people helped are often referred by a hospital discharge team, GP or concerned family members, and the service supports those at the highest risk of social isolation. “We are very pleased to have achieved this award’ said Befriending Coordinator Frank Gow. “For many befriendees a visit from their befriender is the only time they can interact with someone who is not paid to see them. “This vital service enhances their quality of the life, offering the opportunity to form a trusting relationship. “This can prevent unnecessary GP referrals, hospitalisation or calls to out of hours social work services.” Befriending is a free service for those aged over 60 who are at high risk of isolation. The service is delivered entirely by volunteers with coordination supported by WDCVS and has now been running for over ten years.

CELEBRATING THE GUIDES

Local Girl Guides and Girl Scouts celebrate World Thinking Day at the Titan Crane, joined by Provost Douglas McAllister and Joyce White, Chief Executive of West Dunbartonshire Council.

World Thinking Day, a global celebration of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts around the world saw Girlguiding Scotland members snapping and sharing “promise selfies” to share their message of friendship around the world. And local Girlguiding members in West Dunbartonshire found a truly memorable backdrop for their photoshoot of this red letter event – the iconic Titan Crane, which was spectacularly lit up in blue and pink especially for the occasion. The girls were joined for the celebration of their movement by Joyce White, the council’s chief

executive and Provost Douglas McAllister. Eve, 10, of the 6th Brownies, said: “It was great to take a promise selfie in front of the Titan Crane for World Thinking Day and to be part of this special celebration.”

Alcoholics Anonymous

Amy, 17, who is a Leader in Training with the Rainbows, said: “World Thinking Day is a chance to remember that we’re part of a world-wide guiding family.

Al-Anon

“I loved making my promise as a new Leader outside the Titan Crane – it was a really memorable way to celebrate this special day.”

Alzheimers Scotland

As the leading organisation for girls and young women in the country, Girlguiding Scotland offers girls age 5 to 25 “a safe space to try new experiences, grow in confidence, have fun and be a force for good.”

Citizen's Advice Dumbarton

Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and the Senior Section offer girls an action-packed programme encompassing everything from camping and outdoor adventure to campaigning and social actions.

Easter holiday fun If you’re feeling short of inspiration or drawing a blank when asked, “What are you up to for Easter?”, we’ve had a few ideas that will help make an answer easier to come by – without having to queue at the airport. Take a look at our advertisers on these feature pages for some great ideas.

Bike enthusiasts & promotors of all things cycling We sell a range of quality bikes to suit all ages and interests:

BMX, E-bikes, Mountain, Road and Hybrid bikes, etc Excellent customer care by knowledgeable friendly staff Quick turnaround on service and repairs Sales of bicycles, parts, accessories and tools

Within the Lomond and Trossachs area a quick look at the National Park web site will offer you everything from outdoor adventure to a look round a historic castle. Loch Lomond Shores has a variety of Easter events - but one that caught our eye was the daily segway safaris. Enjoy a one-hour

guided segway safari along the many routes and tracks around Loch Lomond and experience the real joy of the Segway. The organisers say you can combine that with other activities like falconry or a guided canoe trip to make a great day out. How about a city break? People come from all over the world to

sample Glasgow’s attractions, yet how often do you catch the train to Glasgow for pleasure rather than work? Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum is one of Scotland's most popular free attractions and features 22 themed, stateof-the-art galleries displaying an astonishing 8000 objects. The collections at Kelvingrove are extensive, wide-ranging and internationally significant. They include natural history, arms and armour, art from many art movements and periods of history and much more.

is close to home... The most famous painting on display at Kelvingrove is the Salvador Dali masterpiece ‘Christ of St John of the Cross’. Sir Roger the Asian elephant is another big museum attraction. There is even a Spitfire plane hanging from the ceiling of the west court. Kelvingrove welcomes families, its displays having been designed with children in mind. Besides all the exhibits, Kelvingrove has a restaurant, a café and a gift shop. Riverside is home to some of the world’s finest cars, trains, trams and bicycles and won the European Museum of the Year award and like Kelvingrove, it is free to enter.

A visit to the Riverside provides the ultimate day out, with over 3000 objects on display from Glasgow’s rich past. You will find an incredible array of objects from skateboards and vintage cars to prams and powerful locomotives. You can even walk down an old cobbled Glasgow street with shops dating from 1895 to the 1980s. Berthed outside you will find the Tall Ship, Glenlee, the UK's only floating Clyde-built sailing ship and also free to enter. Step onboard this impressive ship where you will find all sorts to entertain the kids including an under fives play area in the cargo hold and a mouse hunt.

And of course there’s a direct train from Dumbarton right to the heart of Edinburgh. When did you last explore the capital? The Castle, the Museum of Scotland, the contrasting Old Town and New Town, the arty enclaves of Stockbridge and Dean Village not to mention the Shore at Leith with its trendy bars and restaurants and the Royal Yacht Britannia a short walk away.

This month: WHAT IS STALKING? Under the terms of the Criminal Justice and Licensing (Scotland) Act 2010, the offence of stalking is a course of conduct which causes fear or alarm. The conduct itself is wide ranging. Section 39 of the Act provides that it can include following someone; contacting, or attempting to contact a person; publishing a statement relating to, or purportedly originating from, someone; monitoring electronic communication, including e-mails; spying; giving unwanted gifts and generally acting in a way that may cause fear and alarm. Many people wrongly assume that the alarming conduct must have taken place over

a prolonged period of time in order for it to be viewed as stalking. However, it really only has to have taken place on two occasions. The crime is taken seriously by the Scottish courts and, if convicted, could result in the accused receiving a prison sentence of up to five years, together with a significant fine. No person has to put up with this type of behaviour and as well as criminal sanctions there are also civil remedies available to anyone who requires to be protected from a stalker. Anyone who considers they are being subjected to this type of abuse should contact the police or their solicitor for further advice.

ROTARY’S £10K SUCCESS veteran and accomplished afterdinner speaker with an amazing fund of stories from the mining and licensed trade industries. Fundraising raffles raised a fortune for good causes, including a raffle for auction prizes which raised more than £4,000 – greatly helped by Willie acting as auctioneer.

Left to right (back row) – President David Watson and David Miller; (front row) Willie Allan, Hazel Irvine and Rev Ian Miller.

The Rotary Club of Dumbarton welcomed a record attendance to their recent Annual Sports Dinner at Dumbarton – and, thanks to the ladies, no wonder. This year women were included as invitees for the very first time, a decision which proved an outstanding success with more than 200 present.

Golf Championships, and a fantastic variety of other events – and still remains honorary chairwoman of Dumbarton Football Club Supporters Association.

Special speakers this year included Hazel Irvine (from Cardross), who commentated on every summer Olympics Games since 1996, not to mention World Cups, Commonwealth Games and Winter Olympics.

During her humorous and interesting presentation she mentioned many of the funny and unusual experiences she has had over the years, and was reckoned an excellent speaker and a delight to have as speaker.

She has also been involved in presenting the Open and Masters

The second speaker was Willie Allan from Dunfermline, a

At the end of the evening, David Miller, Convenor of the Community and Vocational Committee thanked all those who had helped the success of a very memorable evening, including the Rev Ian Miller, Hazel and Willie – not forgetting caterer Robert Sloan, who produced an excellent dinner, while his committee worked hard in arranging the event. He was delighted to round off the evening by announcing that more than £10,000 was raised on the night – a club record. Rotary charities to benefit from what was clearly a superb evening will include the British Heart Foundation, CPR Defibrillator Association, Children’s Hospice Association (CHAS) and Alzheimer Scotland.

It was a quiet revolution, with only the clack and whirr of innumerable newfangled machines to let the world know that things would never be the same again. A major spin-off from the industrial revolution was the mass production of clothing, in ways which eventually affected literally everybody. Now – in a fond look back at how people dressed themselves in the age of Robert Louis Stevenson and Alexander Graham Bell – Clydebank Museum is the venue for a special talk on the glories of Victorian and Edwardian costume. It’s to be given by Dr Sally Tuckett, lecturer in History of Dress and Textiles, University of Glasgow, on Thursday, April 20, 6.30pm to 7.30pm at Clydebank Museum & Art Gallery, and is free. This talk is part of a wider programme linked to Clydebank Museum and Art Gallery's current

A Stitch in Time – the Story of the Sewing Machine tells the story of the sewing machine from its invention in the mid-19th century to its far-reaching impact throughout the remainder of that century and into the next.

Dr Tuckett's talk will focus on Victorian and Edwardian costume, including changing styles and fashions, and if you’ve an interest in the subject and can’t make that date there are two further talks on aspects of costume on April 27 and May 4, from 6.30pm to 7.30pm.

Alongside examples of sewing machines by various manufacturers are displayed some of the garments and accessories that these ingenious machines were used to
