There’s no programme information just at the moment, but details are imminent at www.facebook. com/LomondFolkFest.
This month, as pupils prepare to return to school, many or most have possibly been helped out – but if you can lend a hand it will surely be appreciated.
Donations will help to support all children in West Dunbartonshire return to school this month with everything they need in order to feel confident and equipped to learn.
While food is obviously the main area of endeavour for foodshare anything that gives parents some leeway in their efforts to survive the crippling effects of austerity has to be welcome, and every little really does make a difference.
The drop off points are the three West Dunbartonshire Citizens Advice Bureaus – Bank St, Alexandria, High Street, Dumbarton, and Kilbowie Rd, Clydebank.
Venues will include the Balloch House Hotel. The Lomond Park Hotel/Glenroy, The Doghouse, the Tullie Hotel and the Woodbank Inn, and there will also be a ceilidh on the Friday evening in St Kessog’s Hall.
Meanwhile the regular business of Foodshare continues, assisted by donations large and small by local people of all ages – check out latest appeals at West Dunbartonshire Community Foodshare’s FB page.
In previous years the festival attracted crowds of around 7,000, and became a major feat of organisation for enthusiasts. – and it could all happen again.
Foodshare is looking for donations of new and nearly new uniform items, including bags, jackets and shoes, but of course any nearly new items have to be in excellent condition.
0141 573 4162
Its been gone for four years, not counting last year’s very successful mini-festival, but Loch Lomond Folk Festival is well and truly back from July 28 to 30.

Gordon, who lives in Cardross has been a member of The Rotary Club of Dumbarton since April 1996 and has served on all the Club's Committees. Due to work commitments this is the fi rst time he has been able to dedicate the time to take on this role, having recently retired, and now he is aiming to continue the good work undertaken by the club.
This year the incoming president for the Rotary Club of Dumbarton is Gordon Craig, who takes over from the outgoing President David Watson. The offi cial handover was conducted after lunch at the Abbotsford Hotel, when fellow Rotarians congratulated Gordon in his new offi ce and offered their full support to all the club’s projects over the coming year. As a very busy local organisation that appears set to be quite a challenge – but one where he’ll have plenty of support from an enthusiastic membership which has proved it can go the extra
distance when there’s a good cause to support. Regular readers will be aware of the many worthwhile projects carried out to successful conclusion over the years, and we can look forward to much more of the same under the new stewardship. Gordon, for his part, congratulated outgoing President David Watson for an outstanding year in

The new building is set to bring savings in the region of £400,000 per year compared to maintaining the current offi ce estate. Earlier this year, nearly 300 council staff moved from Garshake to the refurbished Bridge Street offi ces in Dumbarton. In addition to that, the renovated Municipal Buildings in Station Road are set to accommodate the Elected Members from Garshake, with the move planned for November. Flamingo Land and Scottish Enterprise are in discussions to develop a 50-acre site in Balloch
What is Flamingo Land – and could it be a valuable addition to Balloch’s increasingly popular array of visitor tourism attractions? That’s a question local residents will have ample opportunity to explore in a public consultation on a scheme which surfaced a few years ago, then seemed to disappear from view – but which is now back in earnest.
01436 402 010 07545 594 129 scratch2shine.co.uk
By the time this issue appears it’s understood that proposals for exactly what the Yorkshire leisure park will be know. Needless to say it will win both supporters
and opponents from the outset – there’s already a petition, supported by thousands. Flamingo Land was chosen by Scottish Enterprise as preferred developer for a 50-acre site in Balloch, and registered its interest in September last year, but until now we haven’t seen exactly what is proposed and whether or not the scheme will chime with the special
The fi rm itself says it is well aware of the sensitivity of the west riverside site, and has committed to full engagement with local people, and has accurately made the point that it hasn’t yet had the chance to explain its proposals in detail. Such a development would bring new jobs to the area, but how it would work in terms of sustainability is the big issue many will want to explore more fully. It’s understood the public consultation will be launched next month, and while some or even many people may already have a view on the matter the actual detail of the scheme will surely underpin a more useful debate. We’ll have more on this possibly highly signifi cant new plan for Balloch in future editions.

learn about wooDlanD The Woodland Trust is staging a special “meet the volunteers event at Overtoun House and Lang Craigs Wood this month – and asking people to consider joining. At this free session on August 26 you will meet staff and volunteers, hear more about the work of the Woodland Trust in general and about volunteering opportunities. This is much more than a nature ramble, as in many ways the Trust can fairly be claimed to be acting as a fi rst line of defence for woodlands across the country, and that involves the understanding of a great deal of practical knowledge. The event is reckoned a great chance for existing volunteers to meet each other and to share ideas and local support as well as for interested people to fi nd out more. If you’re not familiar with the work of this organisation (which relies heavily on green-minded volunteers) suffi ce to say it sees West Dunbartonshire as one of Scotland’s prime natural assets – and is committed to doing everything possible to protect and enhance native woodland. It’s not all about grown-ups, either, as getting children involved with the natural world from an early age is
seen as vitally important on two counts – kids are the tree protectors of the future, while during their formative years the development of a close relationship with the world beyond computers and electronic gadgets is surely a must. August 2017 | What's Up Doc?
Open water swim What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn This month:
This August Loch Lomond Shores is playing host to Scottish Swimming’s Open Water Come and Try Swimming sessions. Swimmers are encouraged to take the plunge for an event that provides expert coaching for all participants. If you would like to try open water swimming for the first time, or if you want to improve your technique, then this event is aimed at you. Open water swimming is obviously notably different from swimming in a pool, and these sessions aim to provide invaluable advice on just how to manage that transformation. The sessions will have expert coaches working with you on specific techniques to build confidence, drafting sighting and
learning skills for use on the open water. The sessions will also aid in building swimmers’ ability as well as their stamina. Participants will be guided on everything from wetsuit hire to acclimatization and safety. Open to everyone over the age of 10 years. Sessions must be booked in advance by visiting www. scottishswimming.com Audrey Reid, Centre Manager of Loch Lomond Shores says. “It is brilliant to be able to host this brand new event right here at Loch Lomond Shores, we hope that this will be the first of many.
DON’T IGNORE WARNING SIGNS!
Most people know that chest pain can be a warning sign for heart attacks. However there are many people out there who still delay acting upon it when it happens to them. Classical signs of a heart attack include central crushing chest pain, sometimes going to the left arm, with associated sweating, nausea and dizziness. When this happens it is obvious that something is very seriously wrong and they usually end up in the right place – hospital. However it can commonly be the case that symptoms can be mild, and people ignore the pains, putting it down to indigestion or muscle aches.

There is usually a nagging doubt that there may be a heart problem which leads people to look for advice further down the line. Unfortunately, the delay involved can result in more serious heart damage and can even be life threatening. Don’t make that mistake, or allow others around you to do the same. If you have worrying chest pains call your doctor immediately, or dial 111 for advice. If necessary call 999. Ambulance crews are trained to take a heart tracing and if necessary deliver you straight to the Golden Jubilee Hospital for early treatment!

come Kit out pOSH NOSH your best frienD BY the loch The Dogs Trust is holding an event for dog owners in Balloch that will offer free microchipping and health checks for your pooches.
After the summer’s hectic programme of traditional Highland Games and serried ranks of massed bagpipes the only marginally quieter month of September kicks off with the Loch Lomond Food and Drink Festival.
With microchipping now a legal requirement for dog owners, the Dogs Trust is offering the service free at Moss O’ Balloch Park in Balloch on Tuesday, August 8, from 11am to 3pm. Other services also available free on the day include a basic health check, training advice and information for dog lovers. Today Dogs Trust (formerly the NCDL) is the UK’s largest dog welfare charity and cares for over 17,000 dogs each year through its network of 20 rehoming centres in the UK – and one in Dublin. It has been involved in every piece of legislation affecting dogs over the past 125 years. The charity continues to advise government
ministers at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and has been heavily involved in all the major animal welfare legislation over the last 30 years. It has also been crucially involved in legislation on the animal welfare act, breeding, dangerous dogs, greyhounds and currently microchipping. To fi nd out more about the Dogs Trust, visit www.dogstrust.org.uk and to attend on the day simply head for the car park at Moss O’ Balloch Park.

This month: CRIMINAL INJURIES COMPENSATION
FOR DOMESTIC & SMALL BUSINESS CCTV SYSTEMS
Legal Matters The Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme is provided by the government to financially compensate innocent victims of violent crimes. The Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority, referred to as CICA, are the body who process the claims and make decisions regarding any award to be made. The regulations of the Scheme and the value of the payments awarded are set by Parliament and are calculated with use of a set tariff system. Although it is recognized that a financial payment will not fully compensate someone for their suffering or loss, the scheme is in place to recognise suffering of blameless victims.
The size of the award varies to reflect the seriousness of the injury, whether physical, sexual or mental, and also take into account any financial losses you may have had. This could be loss of earnings or where you have incurred expenses such as requiring specialist equipment to assist your recovery. It should be noted that not all applicants will qualify and there is a discount system applied in circumstances where the applicant has a criminal record. Your solicitor will be able to talk you through the regulations and assist with making a claim on your behalf.

grave of King robert i We’re indebted to veteran Dumbarton journalist Martin Hannan, who wonders if one of Dumbarton’s oldest mysteries may finally be solved – by a football stadium plan. Writing in a Scottish national newspaper, Martin has revealed that the secret of just where King Robert I (“the Bruce”) was buried may fi nally be unearthed. Dumbarton FC’s plan to build a new stadium brings with it the prospect of a full archaeological survey of the site at Young’s Farm on the edge of town.
Ardmore by Cardross is another folklore favourite for a manor site – where the king could keep in touch by sea, via the Clyde, with politics and allies in the wild Lordship of the Isles.

Everyone knows that elderly people are prime targets for fraudsters, but they’re far from being the only people who can fall victim to scams. In recent weeks West Dunbartonshire Citizens Advice Bureau and West Dunbartonshire Council Trading Standards have been focusing on the threat to people under 30, following figures which show young people are more vulnerable to crime involving subscription traps, identity fraud, job scams, ticketing scams and general online fraud. Ticket fraud can be particularly hurtful – and expensive – if you

“So we want to stress to young people locally that they are all potential scam victims, and that they need to protect themselves against those who would steal their money. Our website has all the information you need to become more savvy and beat the scammers, and you can follow our social media feed for more details.” CAB tips include:

Children’s Hearings Scotland has a number of vacancies in West Dunbartonshire, where it is seeking an area convener and three Panel Practice Advisers. This is not an undertaking just anyone will want to consider, but the system depends on its voluntary supporters to operate efficiently, and can be said to play a vital role in helping to steer young lives towards positive ways forward.
CLEANING & POLISHING
The positions are all voluntary, supporting Scotland's unique care and justice system for children and young people in need of care, protection and support. The Area Convener provides leadership and direction to the Area Support Team, ensuring that the AST supports panel members and carries out its key responsibilities. Panel Practice Advisors (PPAs) play a critical role within Area Support Teams (those responsible for the delivery and administration of the Children's Hearings System at a local level across Scotland).

Copies of the book have been sent to countries across Europe as well as the USA, and presentations of the work and research behind the books are being given outwith Dumbarton itself. They are clearly doing their bit to get Dumbarton on the map, supported by grass roots supporters. Meanwhile, if you are aware of any persistent strange or unexplained experiences relating to local tradition Mary – researching this largely unexplored aspect of local culture – would love to hear about them. Your stories can be given to Anne in the Hub, Dumbarton or sent to Mary via email: maryannepubs@gmail.com

'Seems like
we're in
GOOD
COMPANY... At The Kitchen Depot, we have always prided ourselves in our family values, on always being prepared to do whatever it takes to ensure that our customers are treated exactly as we would like to be treated ourselves - with courtesy, consideration and professionalism.
But lest we ever become complacent, we actively encourage ongoing feedback - here's what Mr Lee Sanderson has to say:
"The most incredible thing about The Kitchen Depot has been your sky-high levels of customer service. Too often a company will promote customer service as a core value, only to reveal a hollow promise when they don't live up to it." Mr Sanderson continues: "My favourite retailer is John Lewis because I know that they will do whatever they can to put something right if it goes wrong. The Kitchen Depot has performed to the same high standard."
"To favourably compare a small family business to Britain's most respected retailer is not something that I do lightly but you are well worthy of the comparison." Well, thanks for that, Mr Sanderson - please excuse us while we blush with pride. When it comes to looking after our customers, The Kitchen Depot is never knowingly undersold.
