Local News | August 2018

FESTIVAL TIME AT BALLOCH Balloch is rapidly becoming the liveliest spot in West Dunbartonshire, with a plethora of high profile Games and major competitive events now reliably drawing thousands of people every summer. The free family festival aims to bring together local artists, community groups and international performers

But this month promises to be particularly special, with the launch of Festival 2018 to support the European Championships – specifically, the Open Water Swimming event - coming to the area. The free family festival aims to bring together local artists, community groups and international performers who will entertain local residents during the course of one very busy day on Saturday, August 11. Scottish Opera will be showcasing a new piece of work at the event called Be a Sport, Spike! for 4 -7 year olds and their families (see article on page 10) and the street theatre company Mischief La

Bas will be on hand to provide hilarious sponge wrestling and a Great Selfie Hop Challenge.

parade through Balloch in the morning to set the tone for what should be a memorable day.

encouraging spectators to spend more time in Balloch and boost the local economy”.

Pop up orchestra Nevis Ensemble will be making an appearance at the festival playing a mix of memorable music, and interactive theatre company Oceanallover will be performing a new piece of promenade drama.

National Park chief executive Gordon Watson said: “We’re excited that Loch Lomond has been chosen to host the open water swimming competition at the inaugural European Championships in August.

There will also be food and drink stalls from West Dunbartonshire producers, and a bar serving local beers.

However there will be plenty of local talent on display too.

“The competition will bring a worldwide audience to Loch Lomond attracting thousands of visitors to the area.

The programme includes performances from Urbaniks, an award winning urban dance group from Balloch, Singer Station from Alexandria, and local singer Christy Hawkins. Meanwhile 150 participants will take part in a colourful carnival

Plumbing & Gas Services

“Festival 2018: Balloch Loch Lomond has been created with businesses and the local community to combine sport and culture and provide a fun, festival atmosphere for everyone,

The action starts at 10am, with performances taking place throughout the day in various locations until the early evening followed by entertainment and special offers in local bars and restaurants. Meanwhile the swimming championships (August 8 to 12) will feature some of Europe’s top aquatics stars in a free spectacle on Loch Lomond that is guaranteed to attract thousands.

James Cosmo

The Queen’s annual honours awards are an opportunity to recognise people from all walks of life who have made a special, individual contribution to their country – and some would say James Cosmo’s MBE is long overdue. It could even be argued that this remarkable West Dunbartonshire man – who has strong links to Dumbarton – should really have been made a knight (after all, he has surely played plenty of knightly roles). If Scotland ever fashioned a Caledonian equivalent of Mount Rushmore at least two of the

giant heads carved from the rock would have to be Sir Sean Connery and James Cosmo. Between them they have had an enormous impact on the world of film, producing a dazzling array of characters in some of the best movies ever made. Where James is concerned everyone has their favourite – the

As the years have rolled by James’ cinematographic successes have continued to increase his already sky-high profile as an actor of consummate skill and versatility – he may be instantly recognisable, but every role has its own inimitable Cosmo quotient. However inevitably this larger than life 70-year-old will remain known largely through films where he plays craggy, indomitable, heroic Scots of the sort legends are made of. Welcoming the honour, he said he supposed the MBE would be “a sort of footnote” to his career – but nobody should doubt that with this very special actor there is surely much more still to come.

DECADES OF HELP FOR KIDS

CLYDESIDE DOMESTICS HOMEHELP DOMESTIC SERVICES

Volunteers who for years have helped vulnerable local children have been honoured by Provost William Hendrie for their unswerving commitment. Six long serving members of the area’s Children’s Panel and one member of the Area Support Team (AST), which oversees the crucial work of the Panel locally, were praised at a special civil event to thank them for their efforts. They included Yvonne Currie from Dumbarton, who has 20 years’ service, and Iain Martin, from Helensburgh, who has served on the panel for 25 years. Appreciation was also shown for 10 years of service to the Panel by

members, and the AST members who support them, volunteer to improve the lives of some of the most vulnerable people in our community.

A decade of service from AST member Isobel Stuart was also marked.

“It is great to see people dedicate so much of their time to the welfare of others. Children in West Dunbartonshire have benefited greatly from their contribution and commitment.”

Provost Hendrie also presented certificates to nine new Panel members to recognise their successful completion of pre-service training. He said: “Children’s Panel

The Children’s Panel is made up of volunteers from a variety of backgrounds who either live or work in the area, and make key decisions about the welfare of vulnerable children – and sadly their expertise is always in demand. Applications for new members are held every year, and the 2018 intake will be advertised in the near future.

Back row: Yvonne Currie, Isobel Stuart, Ethel Bunniss, Margaret Ferris Front row: Barbara Oattes, Maureen McGlinchey, Provost Hendrie, Peter Hessett

In the meantime anyone interested in becoming a Children’s Panel member, or who would like to find out more, should visit www. childrenspanelscotland.org or contact Scott Kelly at the council on 01389 737220.

“It was lovely to be in the company of the royal family, but speaking to the great people who had been invited and hearing why they were there and the good they had done was truly inspiring. “After winning my award, this was just the icing on the cake.” Tracy has raised thousands of pounds for CHAS since the charity launched an appeal to build Robin House hospice in Loch Lomond in 2002.

Tracy Brittan was joined by other residents including Patrick Muir, who won a Provost Civic Award in 2017 for creating impressive wood carvings from tree stumps in Balloch Park. Council employees who had previously been praised through the Employee Recognition Awards were also there to meet the royals.

Tracy was able to take her 90-year-old father Derrick Robinson along with her to the event, and later said: “It was an absolutely fabulous day, and such an honour to have been invited along. “We saw the Queen, Duke of York and Earl of Wessex – it is definitely a story to tell the grandchildren.

Patrick Muir, who attended with his partner Julie Doyle, added: “We had a fantastic time – it was a beautiful day and the gardens were magnificent. “We didn’t expect to be so close to the Royal family – Prince Andrew was standing right beside me chatting. “I was a bit terrified he would talk to me to be honest. “It’s a day we’ll always remember and I’m glad we got to go.”

GATEWAY’S JOBS SUCCESS

Need a Joiner? Phone Jimmy the Joiner

Hundreds of local people are reckoned to have found new jobs through a scheme to improve employment among young people.

This sort of individual result, multiplied by hundreds of similar successes, is hugely important in an area where finding work can be a major struggle for many.

SOVEREIGN BLINDS

The Youth Gateway, part of Glasgow Region City Deal, significantly exceeded targets set at the start of the three-year project. There was particular success in West Dunbartonshire, with 1,326 young people involved although the original target set was only 780. One successful candidate who benefited from the programme was Paul Geddes, 24. He became involved in 2015 and was supported to secure a job as a Greenspace mechanic with West Dunbartonshire Council. Now he works four days a week maintaining equipment in Argyle Park in Alexandria and spends a day at Glasgow Kelvin College working towards a Level 3 SVQ qualification.

A total of 715 young people went into employment because of the scheme – almost 500 more than expected. It means the council helped just over half of those who engaged with the project move into employment, which is said to be the highest percentage for all eight local authorities who ran the scheme. Regeneration convener Councillor Iain McLaren said: “I am delighted with the results of the Youth Gateway project. “Seeing more than 700 young people are now in employment as a direct result of being

involved in this programme is wonderful and shows how worthwhile our involvement in City Deal has already been. “Our results are a testament to the hard work being undertaken in West Dunbartonshire.” The council’s cost of engaging young people is said to have been £1,238 per person compared to a City Region average of £1,705. The programme aimed to engage with 15,000 unemployed young people aged 16 to 29 and to support 5,000 to progress to employment for a total investment of £15 million.

RNLI’S ‘ROADSHOW’ BOOST If you enjoy programmes like Antiques Roadshow and Bargain Hunt you’ll probably be interested in a special visit by McTear’s, the Glasgow auctioneers, to Dumbarton next month. It’s no ordinary event, as the main aim is to raise funds for one of the nation’s most deserving charities – the RNLI – and the organisers are hoping for a big local response. McTear’s are carrying out a freeto-attend valuation session in Dumbarton’s St Patrick’s Church Hall on September 8, from 1.30pm to 4.30pm, with a nominal charge of £3 per item to be valued, or three items for £5 and £10 for more than three items.

McTear’s are of course promoting the session now, in order to give people time to have a good rummage through their attics and The rest is down to local residents, garages. people the opportunity to find out, once and for all, whether that unusual piece of furniture or antique mirror is truly valuable. Unsurprisingly the day will also be supported by the Burgh’s own branch of the RNLI, who will be laying on teas, coffees and home baking for sale while the McTear’s experts survey the miscellany of objects likely to appear for their consideration. Meanwhile “Be a Sport, Spike!” is a fun production for children aged four to seven, telling the story of “The Spike” McTavish – the greatest sportsman the world has ever seen.

If you thought opera was all about posh people in expensive gear listening to interminable epics by Wagner, a visit by Scottish Opera to Moss o'Balloch Park on August 11 should come as a welcome surprise. The cast are determined to prove that great opera is for everyone, and are staging a tour (including Balloch) in which carefully edited masterpieces – like Gilbert and Sullivan’s much-loved HMS Pinafore – will help to banish these pre-conceptions by proving this very special kind of production can be a huge amount of fun.

Overturning social order and parental wishes, the couple plans to elope, but a surprise confession soon leaves everything in doubt.

Performed in Scottish Opera’s fully accessible travelling opera house – a specially adapted trailer designed to look like a miniature Theatre Royal Glasgow – the 25-minute shows are brought to life by a storyteller, singers, instrumentalists and a series of colourful illustrations. Filming gets underway at BBC Scotland’s Dumbarton studios this month, so don’t be surprised if you see Jack and Victor, Naveed and Isa on the High Street in weeks to come. Comedy partners Ford Kiernan and Greg Hemphill feel the time is right to retire Still Game from TV, after a monumental run of success – even Only Fools and Horses had to come to an end – and the series will become retro comedy gold which will continue to be enjoyed, via DVD, for decades to come. Greg Hemphill, who plays Victor McDade, says: “Still Game is a story 21 years in the making. We’ve had an amazing run but one of our hopes when we

brought the show back was that we would get the opportunity to finish Jack, Victor and the gang’s journey. “We feel that time is upon us. We hope you will join us later in the year to see how the story ends!” Ford Kiernan, who plays Jack Jarvis, adds: “I can’t believe 21 years have passed in what, for us, has been an outstanding experience of collaboration, storytelling and performing.

“But, above all, being fortunate to entertain people and make them smile. "So when the last episode airs we hope your memories of our little gang will be fond ones.” Since making its TV debut in 2002, Still Game has become a comedy phenomenon. When it returned in 2016 after a nine year hiatus, it became the most-watched TV programme in over a decade in Scotland attracting more than half of the viewing audience.

NEW CHAPTER FOR LIBRARY

What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn

This month: A DRINK TO YOUR HEALTH...?

The Mobile Library service is introducing a new route and timetable to make the service more accessible to residents in remote areas and places of high deprivation. The new service will include additional stops at Castlehill, Brucehill and Haldane, and several more stops in other parts of West Dunbartonshire. It offers a quality service to all residents, but is particularly aimed at those who are elderly and travel long distances. The van can carry over 2,000 items for loan and is stocked with a wide range of adult and children's fiction, non-fiction books, large print books and talking books. It is fitted with disabled access, and customers can request any item held in West Dunbartonshire Libraries free of charge.

To book the Mobile Library Service to attend local gala days and visit any community groups please call, 01389 608037 or email mobile.library@west-dunbarton. gov.uk Anyone with a West Dunbartonshire library card can use the mobile library to borrow books and audio visual materials. If you are not already a library member but would like to join the library you can do so just bring along proof of name and address to the mobile library or any branch library. To view the new timetable visit www.west-dunbarton.gov.uk/ mobilelibrary

We all know that alcohol has health risks, but I was recently interested to read that every time we drink alcohol, it causes gut and liver damage and increases body fat! When we take a drink, the alcohol first causes damage to the gut lining, allowing toxins to more easily enter the bloodstream. It first gets broken down into acetaldehyde, a chemical toxin that causes nausea and replaces healthy liver with scar tissue. Acetate is then formed, and each time it’s created, small parts of the liver degenerate and die. The body then

Do you need an uplift...? We uplift ALLSORTS of... Junk

converts acetate to fatty acids which leave fat deposits on the liver, preventing it from working efficiently. So, every time we drink we increase our liver’s scar tissue, inflammation, fat deposits, cell death, as well as increasing the toxins in our blood. And we wonder why we don’t perform so well the morning after? On the other hand, the less alcohol we drink the better our sleep, mood, weight and energy levels, as well as clearer skin condition. Perhaps the next time you “drink to your health”, it might be a non-alcoholic one?

Home from Home, a pre-owned furniture store based in Broadmeadow Estate, are keen to hear from anyone with suitable donations

Dunbartonshire Chamber of Commerce is staging a special networking session at The Carrick, Alexandria, on August 14, with a breakfast roll to start at 8.30am followed by a nine-hole round of golf. It’s arguably not a bad way to break up the weekly grind, allowing business folk to make some time to chew over current concerns – and share ideas – with like-minded souls. Chamber has a busy and interesting programme, operating as a hub for ideas, and a focus for connected endeavour – and has recently been seeking to recruit new members. You’ll find full details of the Chamber and its activities on their Facebook site.

“Second hand” has a down-at-heel sound about it, and “pre-loved” is just silly – but how about “recycled”? Local politicians lent their support to the recent opening in Dumbarton’s Broadmeadow Estate of pre-owned furniture store Home from Home, with the comment that it’s sad there’s no let-up in demand for this kind of service – but some would argue that’s a perspective that’s a little out of date.

BALLET

The first ballet school, the Académie Royale de Danse, was established in France in 1661. Today there are three main forms of ballet: classical, neoclassical and contemporary. Ballet's conventional steps, grace and fluidity of movement are a great foundation for dance in general.

BALLROOM

CONTEMPORARY

Ballroom dancing has made a comeback in recent years. There are many styles of ballroom dancing from around the world, such as the waltz, tango and foxtrot, and each has specific step patterns. It is essential for both partners to know the steps so they can dance together.

Unlike dances such as ballet, contemporary dance is not associated with specific techniques. In contemporary dance, people attempt to explore the natural energy and emotions of their bodies to produce dances that are often deeply personal.

DANCE STUDIO • DISCO FREESTYLE • SLOW

HIGHLAND

Highland dancing is a style of competitive solo dancing developed in the Scottish Highlands in the 19th and 20th centuries in the context of competitions at public events such as the Highland games. It is often performed to the accompaniment of bagpipes.

MODERN JIVE

Modern jive has evolved from jive and swing into one of the simplest of all partner dances. There's no footwork to learn so within half an hour your local club will have you turning and spinning to the biggest chart hits of today and yesterday, with lots of different partners.

STREET

Street dance describes urban dance styles that evolved in the street, school yards and nightclubs, including hip hop, popping, locking, krumping and breaking. These dances are practised competitively, as well as being an art form and a great workout.

LINE DANCING

Line dances are choreographed dances performed in unison by a group of people in rows. Anybody can do it and the steps are easy to learn. Beginners can enjoy dancing to a whole range of routines to all genres of music. You don't need a partner so it's great for meeting people.

SALSA

Salsa dancing is a fun and flirtatious form of partner dancing, fusing steamy Afro-Caribbean and Latin styles into simple and lively movements. The basic steps are easy to learn, and you'll salsa your way across the dance floor before you know it.

TAP

Tap dance uses shoes with small metal plates on the soles to make the dance itself part of the music. Tap evolved in America and had its roots in African dance, Irish dance and clog dancing. Tap is as popular today as it was in the heyday of the great Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly musicals.

MODERN JAZZ

Jazz dancing is energetic and fun, consisting of unique moves, fancy footwork, big leaps and quick turns. Jazz dance was popularised in the US by the big bands of the swing era. It offers a full body workout, developing dance ability, flexibility, strength and rhythm.

SCOTTISH

Scottish Country is a social dance involving groups of couples dacing to set routines. These dances are set to musical forms (Jigs, Reels and Strathspey Reels) which come from the Gaelic tradition of Highland Scotland, as do the steps used in performing the dances.

ZUMBA

Zumba is a popular fitness programme inspired by Latin dance. The word "Zumba" comes from a Colombian word that means to move fast and have fun. Using upbeat Latin music together with cardiovascular exercise, Zumba is aerobic dancing that's great fun and easy to learn.

This month: WORKING CONDITIONS The whole of the UK has recently been enjoying unprecedented warm weather. Although this is generally welcome, it has also created some uncomfortably hot indoor working environments and complaints about working conditions. Guidance for employers and employees can be found in the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992, which provides that during working hours the temperature in all indoor workplaces must be reasonable. There is no legal minimum or maximum working temperatures to determine what reasonable is or precisely when it would be considered too cold or too hot to work.

However, it does suggest that the temperature should be a minimum of 16ºC or 13ºC if employees are doing physical work. Unfortunately, there is no guidance for a maximum temperature limit provided for. There is a requirement that employers must adhere to health and safety at work law that includes; keeping the temperature at a comfortable level and providing clean and fresh air. In the event you feel your workplace is too hot to work comfortably then you should raise this directly with your employer initially who should take appropriate and reasonable steps to address this with you and any other employees affected.

GIANT ROWS BATHTUB UP LOCH came to his rescue stating he could make it reality, he would buy a bathtub and row it up Loch Lomond! One year on and Malcolm is ready to make his epic journey, squeezing his statuesque frame into his bath with lobster floats as outriggers, in honour of the man he thought of as his own grandfather. He has already created a prototype ‘boattub’ in the US and he’ll make a Scottish ‘boattub update’ when he returns home in July.

Malcom Burns is raising money for Alzheimer's Scotland by rowning a bathtub the full length of Loch Lomond

Malcolm Burns, a 39 year old, 6’3” local lad who currently lives in New Mexico, America, is on a mission to raise money for Alzheimer’s Scotland in a novel way, writes Liz Grant. Malcolm plans to row up the 22.6 miles length of Loch Lomond on his own in a bathtub which he’s made seaworthy with the help of close friends and family. He sets sail at 4am on Saturday the 11th of August from Balloch. It’s an estimated 15-18 hours journey. What possessed him to do this? Last year he visited his wife, Ruth’s grandfather. Papa Robin

Hickey was in the later stages of dementia. Robin happily told a story of two young men he had heard about that had rowed the length of Loch Ness in a bathtub. Sadly Robin began to doubt the truth in his memory of what was surely too far-fetched a story. Malcolm

We love that Malcolm is doing this. So many of us have been touched by the dark side of dementia. Isn’t it wonderful to know that there are heroes out there doing something silly with such beautiful thought behind it? Malcolm would like to raise £2,000. You can help him smash that target via his fundraising page: www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/papas-bathtub-row

UKRAINIAN MUSIC MAGIC WE’RE BACK IN BUSINESS! Work Connect, a valuable local group which offers support for adults with learning disabilities, lost thousands of pounds worth of equipment in a fire at Havoc Pavilion earlier this year – but are getting back to normal now. The group had been using the Pavilion on a temporary basis while work was carried out at their usual home in Levengrove Park.

These efforts minimised disruption to the group’s members. Councillor Marie McNair, chairwoman of West Dunbartonshire Health and Social Care Partnership, said: “It is humbling to see the community work together in the face of adversity. “This fire was a callous act, but it hasn’t stopped Work Connect doing what they do best.”

If this sounds like the job for you please send your CV to:

After the blaze disaster the council donated £20,000, which has allowed them to replace tools, computers, stationery, books and games.

Since the fire, Work Connect have been using the Bruce Centre at Dumbarton Joint Hospital as an office base, as well as a space to provide breakfast club, photography group, arts and crafts and quiet Fridays for users with Autism.

Job Vacancy

Residents donated hundreds of useful materials including bikes, gardening tools, craft materials and sports equipment.

Work Connect also operates a nursery at Levengrove Park in Dumbarton and a café at Balloch slipway.

St Augustine’s Church in Dumbarton is playing host to the incredible Kyiv Classic Accordion Duo on Friday, August 3, at 7.30pm – featuring maestros Igor and Oleks in a hugely entertaining medley of music ranging from “string quartet” to huge church organ and even a whole orchestra… all managed with two accordions, and a great deal of skill. The duo, who can promise an unusual and fascinating evening, give their time and skills to support young people still affected by the great Chernobyl nuclear disaster, and although entry is free donations for this very worthy cause are welcome.

He said: “Our instructors are experienced, fun to work with, completely professional and offer their services without any payment.

An exciting new martial arts club has started in Dumbarton, teaching the Japanese sword art of Iaido – an ancient discipline offering both mental and physical benefits. And the students do use real swords – although naturally not against an opponent – in the same sort of training routines as the Japanese Samurai warriors of times gone by. The group meets in the Masonic Hall in Church Street, Dumbarton on Saturday mornings (9am to 11am), and welcomes female and male students, including people returning to martial arts. The group is a member of the British Kendo Association (BKA), and through this is linked into

Europe and Japan – the home of its Japanese teachers, Iaido (pronounced ee-eye-do), is a Japanese Samurai sword art, whose central aim is instant drawing and cutting using a sword (Katana). It's not expensive to start, as the club can provide initial training equipment, and Donnie (4th dan black belt in Iaido and 3rd dan in Kendo, who leads the club, is a member of the BKA National Committee and is also the BKA Safety Officer.

“The benefits of Iaido are both mental and physical. People often have the impression that it is purely a physical challenge but you have to be able to train your mind as well as your body. “It sharpens your mind and it really helps when you're under pressure at work - this is because it's a discipline that enables you to keep calm and gives you a feeling of satisfaction and that you're progressing. In grading and competition the judges look for perfection in the physical and mental aspects of how you carry out manoeuvres – it's an ongoing process." If you would like to start training just go along, or contact Donnie on 07712 825143. There’s also further information at www.facebook. com/groups/132100800847879 and www.britishkendoassociation.com

TURNING DOWN THE RACKET Commercial & Domestic Cleaners

LOCH LOMOND LIVE Details are now starting to be firmed up for an unusual post-summer music festival on Loch Lomond – timed nicely for just after the main holiday season but before the summer inevitably fades to chilly autumn. To be staged over the weekend of September 22-23 Loch Lomond Live, at the Drymen Show Park, is billed as a brand new family-friendly festival with live music, street food and drink (with local produce), stalls and attractions, a funfair, water and land based games, and licensed facilities. As many as 50 bands may perform, including acts such as Have Mercy Las Vegas, Rollin Drones, the ever-popular plaidswathed Clann An Drumma and The Hur – with more set to follow. Up to date information on this event is at www.facebook.com/ lochlomondlive/

d ... We’ve all been there – blaring muzak, booming announcements we don’t want to hear, and all the other din of a large and busy superstore. Now Morrisons in Dumbarton is bringing in a quiet hour on a Saturday, to allow folk who don’t mind shopping early (9am to 10am) an interval of calm in which to collect their messages... before the usual cacophony resumes. The quieter hour at the Glasgow Road store comes with the support of the National Autistic Society, which reckons it will particularly benefit autistic people – including children –who find noisy supermarkets a harrowing experience. A survey found a surprisingly high number of people were seriously concerned by noise

issues in stores – it isn’t just a niggle, but something which for many people turns what should be a routine shopping trip into an ordeal. So Morrisons carried out a trial earlier in the year in three of its stores to find out what improvements can be made and to find a convenient time each week for the Quieter Hour to take place. Russell McCaw at Morrisons Dumbarton said: “Our initial trials showed there is a need for a quieter shopping experience. We hope that these changes make a real difference for some of our customers at our store”.

OPPOSITION TO GOOD REPORT FOR ST PAT’S FLAMINGOLAND

The summer months have reportedly seen a wave of objections to the proposed plan to develop a new holiday park at Balloch, bringing with them the certainty of one of the area’s most bitterly-contested planning applications later this year. Objections range from the scale of the development and the impact the scheme might have on the surrounding area to traffic problems. Many of the objections, for example from Community Councils, have come ahead of the detailed plan of the Flamingoland scheme, and more appear likely once the full scope of what is intended is made clear.
