Local News | August 2019

VOTE FOR OUR FAVOURITE PARK Everybody knows Dumbarton’s Levengrove Park is among the very best, but next month we’ll find whether it’s actually the top park in the whole UK. In such a crowded field that might seem an unattainable ambition, but the local organisation which works hard to make the park special is determined to do more – and Dumbarton Community Advertiser readers can help. The Friends of Levengrove Park are asking readers to cast their vote in a contest which rewards the country’s leading public space environments. The “best park” accolade is guaranteed to focus new attention on an amenity used by practically

everybody in Dumbarton, one which over the last year or two has been treated to some extra care and attention. Back in 2017 the Friends were delighted to announce a whole host of initiatives at the park made possible by a £2.8million lottery grant, and important changes have taken place since then. The Friends’ ambition for the park included restoration at St Serf’s Church, restoration of Kilmahew Fountain, the new pavilion, a revamp of the layout of the park’s

arboretum and a clean-up of the iconic war memorial. The masterplan for the site aimed to ensure sufficient area would be provided to continue Levengrove Parks longstanding history of hosting successful events servicing the local and wider community. The Friends of Levengrove Park are all volunteers who are interested in assisting in returning the park to its former glory, and have arguably achieved a great deal already – but the additional lustre of a major national award for the park would be the icing on the cake. Bounded by the River Leven, the River Clyde and overlooked by Dumbarton Castle, Levengrove Park is a beautiful greenspace which has something for everyone to enjoy. The park provides recreational, historical, horticultural and

educational opportunities, among others, and as we’ve seen over recent months benefits from active involvement of the community in the park. However despite what has been achieved so far the effort continues to turn this sometimes underplayed Burgh treasure into a showpiece leisure facility. Friends of Levengrove Park have nominated the park for the award of UK’s Best Park 2019, which is held annually by the Fields In Trust organisation, and are hoping many Community Advertiser readers will help their campaign to win an award which will put Dumbarton well and truly on the map. A public vote opened last month to determine the winner, and voting will remain open until noon on Monday, August 19 – you’ll find details at fieldsintrust.org/bestpark/scotland/levengrove.

More on how the scheme will work will be explained at a meeting in Dumbarton Library on Wednesday, August 28, from 6.30pm to 7.30pm. Time is of the essence, as plans have to be formed and applications submitted by the end of next month – however with significant funds available many will find the process worth the effort. To apply for a grant residents need

to complete an official Year of Young People Legacy Fund grant application form. All funded projects will have to adhere to funding guidelines and submit a post project evaluation form on completion. Interested groups must apply by the deadline of: Monday, September 30, as applications received after this date will not be considered. The funding panel will review all applications in early October and further grant applications will be

LOCH IS BACK INTO THE SWIM Next month’s big local event is Go Swim, an ambitious first-time effort to run a major league swimming event in one of Britain’s most sensational open water locations. There was disappointment when one big event disappeared from local shores, but that could prove to be a very temporary setback, as the event on Saturday, September 7, has all the makings of a broad-based experience virtually everyone can enjoy at some level – whether as a competitor or a spectator cheering on some plucky have-a-go family member. Go Swim offers a packed programme of open water swimming events for all ages and experience levels, held on the beautiful banks of Loch Lomond. There will be open water swimming events for all ages and standards of swimmers, including

the family friendly 250 metre option for those aged 8-plus (when accompanied by an adult) and 750 metre and 1500 metre options for those just starting out in open water swimming. By its very nature this sort of event is obviously different from the sort of contest that centres on swimming pool endeavours, offering a completely new challenge which – for the more ambitious contests – can test the skills of even the most experienced contestants.

For the more experienced swimmer 3,000 metre, 5,000 metre and 10,000 metre options will also be available, that includes generous cut offs to allow for those who want to take it a bit easier. Meanwhile if you are looking to try your first open water swim and haven't invested in a wetsuit yet, @LomoWatersports are offering pre booked wetsuit hire (Fri-Mon) for £15 per person – just email admin@lomo.co.uk with your requirements. HALDANE HOMES APPROVED For some residents it may be a lurch to see their former school subsumed within the shiny fabric of the latest newbuild homes estate to arrive in the area – but there’s a plus. The 58 new homes approved on the grounds of the former Haldane Primary School are to be affordable council homes, and that being the case they are helping to fulfil a clearly identified social need in West Dunbartonshire. The plan will transform the 2.4 hectare site on Miller Road, Haldane, with one and two-bed flats, three-bed bungalows, as well as three and four bed semidetached and detached houses, including a number which are wheelchair accessible. Planning Committee members were told a generous area of open space will be located to the south west of the site adjacent to the Carrochan Burn.

Haldane homes plan illustration

A woodland path will also be formed through the space with natural play equipment and features, and another footpath is planned. Access will be from Miller Road and a new road formed through the centre of the site. The development is part of the local authority’s new Strategic Housing Investment Plan (SHIP), which aims to build 1000 new social rented homes in West Dunbartonshire by 2021. The former Haldane Primary School was demolished earlier this year after it closed its doors in 2018 and

merged with Jamestown Primary to form Balloch Primary. The school is now within the Balloch Campus with St Kessog’s Primary. Councillor Diane Docherty, who chaired the planning committee which approved the scheme, said: “A site with 58 new affordable homes for rent will make a big difference to the community of Haldane. “The application has been well thought-out and I’m pleased to see it has taken consideration of the residents’ viewpoints and their desire for the new homes to have clear links with the park.”

GAMES 2019 VOTED ‘BEST’ The enduring strength of the area’s classic Highland Games events was dramatically underlined this year by a record-breaking summer spectacular to remember in Moss O’Balloch Park. As a colourful emblem of traditional Scottish games culture the Loch Lomond Highland Games has long been established as one of the very best – but this year was particularly special.

looking forward to our visit. The Highland Dancing competition is very well organised and the girls are very honoured to be dancing in Scotland.”

More than 9,000 visitors are reckoned to have attended the event, drawn by a heady mix of full-on game competitions including heavy weights and hammer throwing, and immaculate Highland Dancing and pipe band performances.

The Chieftain of the Loch Lomond Highland Games, Major James Macrae said: “Over the years, the games have attracted contestants and spectators from home and abroad every year and I would like to thank everyone who played their part in making this year’s games a huge success.

The popular games welcomed people from as far afield as Germany and Canada, and was broadcast to millions of viewers in China watching Chinese travel programme ‘Zhu’s life in Britain’.

“On behalf of the committee, I would like to thank our contestants and sponsors, in particular West Dunbartonshire Council and West Dunbartonshire Leisure Trust, for their continued support.” Council Leader Jonathan McColl, congratulating all those involved, said: “I am proud of our Scottish heritage and the Games are a great way for tourists and visitors to get a true taste of Scotland”. DAVE’S COACHING SESSIONS

WERE YOU IN THE CLASS OF 69?

Alexandria soccer coach David Smith is offering a no-stress approach to community fitness, which centres on fun activities designed to “get people off the couch and having fun in a group environment”. The idea is to allow individuals to work at their own pace within a group session, steadily building on skills and confidence. Called West Dunbartonshire Soccer Size, the sessions naturally revolve around football – but there are side benefits for everyone involved, whether they are fully fledged soccer fans or perhaps only just developing an interest based on informal games with friends. David has been a volunteer football coach for over 10 years, and has coached at professional clubs besides working with Coerver Coaching, and has a

great deal of acquired expertise to pass on. His goal is to “provide some fun physical activity in the community, for the community”, and he’s looking to hear from over-16’s interested in finding out more. It sounds a good way of putting an otherwise probably dull Monday evening to good use, as well as being a great way to learn about team spirit while also making new friends. The sessions are on Monday evenings in Renton’s John Connolly Centre, from 7pm to 8pm, and cost £10 for four sessions.

It’s half a century since Dumbarton’s Notre Dame High School opened – the year of the Moon landing – and a special reunion is being planned this month to mark the event. The session will be in Balloch’s St Kessog’s Church Hall on Friday, August 23, where the organisers hope old photographs and memorabilia will remind former pupils of those possibly half-forgotten schooldays of long ago. There’s to be a disco and buffet too, so if you are interested in taking a fun trip down memory lane get in touch with the organiser at thecarolinewalls@ hotmail.com.

DEVICE THAT CAN SAVE LIVES The growing awareness of the importance of potentially life-saving defibrillators has led to the installation of two new fixtures at Dumbarton’s Bruce Street day centre, where they will be added to the Scottish Ambulance Service register – but the campaign goes on.

Life-saving defibrillators are installed at Dumbarton’s Bruce Street day centre

The council agreed to invest £50,000 to increase the number of automated external defibrillators (AED) in the area after a campaign urging businesses and local organisations to register their units. The centre received donations from service users, parents and carers, and money raised through fundraising will pay for maintenance including batteries and new pads. For anyone still unfamiliar with

the concept, the device delivers an electric shock through the chest to the heart which can literally keep someone alive until emergency help arrives. West Dunbartonshire Health and Social Care Partnership vice chairwoman Councillor Marie McNair said: “It is great to see our strong partnership continuing with Heartstart and the Scottish Ambulance Service in installing these devices locally and training people to use the units.”

Chairman Allan Macleod said: “As a partnership we are still calling on business, organisations and community groups to build an accurate register of where these life-saving machines are fitted. “The register is being compiled by the Scottish Ambulance Service’s R2R (Register to Resuscitate) and will help direct someone to their nearest machine in the event of an emergency. These machines are saving lives and I would urge people to make sure every machine in West Dunbartonshire is registered.” The location of your nearest defibrillator can be found on an app which you can add to your mobile phone to access in an emergency. Visit www.trossachsdefibrillator.co.uk. The Register to Resuscitation Scheme is backed by British Heart Foundation, which says that cardiac arrest outside of hospital is the most common, lifethreatening emergency. Registration is easy, can save lives, and can be carried out online at https://pad.scottishambulance. com.

BALLOCH MUSIC FEST IS BACK

• PUNCTUAL • RELIABLE • FAST •

A. Hamilton

This month begins in tuneful style with a late summer rerun of a previous Balloch festival involving several excellent local venues, and – important at the tail end of the holidays – most of the events are free. There is no potential shortage of people eager to see more music events of this kind, and clearly plenty of enthusiasm among bands – and venues who will enjoy a busy weekend’s trade – so anyone able to support the venture should arguably make the most of the opportunity. The Balloch Big Music Festival on the weekend of Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th August is some compensation for the loss of the folk festival a few years ago, and if it enjoys the levels of support expected will hopefully pave the way for regular repeat performances.

Brown and Jimmy Murray of Castle Studios, Dumbarton have teamed up with all the bars and hotels in Main Street, Balloch, to create a village festival. “Singer Station will be opening the festival at Kerbside (formerly the Backroom, Lomond Park Hotel) at 2pm on Saturday so bring the family down.” There will be folk jam sessions at various venues and a blues jam session at the Tullie Inn on the Sunday afternoon, where the featured act is local band, Have Mercy Las Vegas.

NEW TOILETS FOR LUSS

The National Park has announced an upgrade plan for key visitor sites on Loch Lomond, to include new toilets, parking facilities and bins at Luss. Tarbet and Inveruglus are also set to benefit from the scheme, which at these two locations will include 24-hour access to toilet facilities. While work is in progress closures or partial closures of the current facilities are unavoidable, however work will be phased to ensure that only one facility is affected at a time. There will be signage on site to make people aware of the work and updates on how the project is progressing will be available on the National Park Authority’s social media.

August 2019 | What's Up Doc?

ACOUSTIC NIGHT HIT THE SPOT What's Up Doc? There have been many talented performers at music nights staged in St Augustine’s in Dumbarton, and one recent acoustics special also raised a small fortune for a worthy local cause. It was the sort of group likely to win a generous donation or two from any sizable charity fundraiser, but even so the money raised indicates the interest in grass roots local music too. Staged at the height of the holiday season, the performance featured no less than five local acts - Robert Ryan, Westport, Dumbarton Folk Academy, Stray Potato and Half Salud & Toast. As a way of showing off local music talent in a rather special setting, while also raising important funds for a community cause, it was a complete success, and will probably help to set the stage for more of the same. Beneficiary Riverside Playgroup and Toddlers have received a £500 donation as a result of this concert, and a lot of appreciative audience members have enjoyed a great concert into the bargain. The Playgroup’s Mags McArthur

was delighted to accept the money on behalf of the playgroup on the night – it is cash that will certainly be put to good use on behalf of many local youngsters.

with Dr Nick Dunn

This month: ANAPHYLAXIS Food allergy is thought to be on the increase, and we are not sure why. Very rarely, as was in the news a few months ago, people die of the most serious form of allergy – anaphylaxis. However, there are some common misunderstandings about what food allergy actually means. It is not food intolerance, which is when certain foods can result in unpleasant symptoms such as nausea, diarrhoea or stomach pains. Also, some forms of allergy never result in anaphylaxis, but may cause a rash. Whilst anaphylaxis is potentially life-threatening, the risk of death from it is close to 1 in a

million. People who are at risk are generally identified early, and the symptoms include rash, wheezing, swelling around the face and mouth and sometimes collapse. They should always carry an “Epipen” which contains adrenaline and are encouraged to use this early if there is even a small suspicion of anaphylaxis, and get straight to hospital. If there is a delay with the ambulance, a further injection can be given after 5 minutes, to prevent worsening again. With increased awareness by everyone of this problem, including nurses and doctors, it is hoped serious reactions are spotted and treated early!

DACA Locals honoured for making a difference to their communities were special guests to the Queen’s recent Annual Garden Party, staged in the grounds of Holyrood Palace

They included Jim McLaren, who was named Citizen of the Year last year for his work to create the Golden Friendship club – a lifeline which gives people who need it most the chance to take part in a wide range of confidence-boosting activities – and Sheena Rollo, who won a Provost Civic Award in 2018 as part of the Dumbarton District MS Group for 50 years of support. These and other guests of Her Majesty were given a warm send-off to the event by Provost William Hendrie, who said: “This is a great way for us to let these

people know how much their hard work and dedication means to the communities around West Dunbartonshire. “These are the people who make our area what it is and I was delighted to have the opportunity to say thank you to them in person.” The garden party was also attended by Princess Anne, Prince Edward, and Prince Andrew, who joined the Queen in meeting guests on the lawn. Jim McLaren said: “It was an

“I took my 75-year-old mother, Agnes, with me. “She has been involved with Golden Friendships right from the start, I set it up shortly after my dad died and she has been there three days a week since then helping me. It has been a new lease of life for her. “For me, seeing how much she enjoyed it made the day even more special. Princess Anne came right up to us and said good afternoon which was lovely”.

Something New

The summer holidays already seem like a distant memory, and a distinct chill in the air heralds the onset of autumn – but that doesn’t mean we have to accept that the fun part of the year is nearly over. We understandably moan about our seemingly never-ending winter, but the “off season” – dark nights, frequent rain – is the perfect time to discover new interests, probably mainly indoors, that can deliver major benefits in terms of self-fulfilment and even career advancement. There are so many classes and courses available within an easy journey of home that we really are spoiled for choice when it comes to finding something worthwhile to add to our stock of knowledge and experience, even before you consider

diversions which are mainly about entertainment. Most of us have at one time or another briefly considered learning a language (at least proficiently enough for simple conversation) or playing a musical instrument, but somehow it often seems difficult – in a busy life full of existing commitments – to make it happen. On the cusp of those long dark nights it’s a great time to consider how best to spend those shouldbe valuable hours that might otherwise be taken up with dull nights in with the TV.

Still on eastern disciplines, the more active among us might consider learning the basics of karate, a skill which is all about self control but which its enthusiasts also find stimulating and rewarding on a variety of personal levels. The area’s colleges are an obvious first port of call when it comes to deciding just what to choose from the multitude of options on offer, with evening classes – in anything from classical guitar to ancient history – a standard feature

Not everybody fancies the idea of a fitness or dance class, but it’s a great way to stay alert during the long drawn-out winter, or you could consider the potential benefits of a yoga class as a nonstressful way of developing inner confidence and bodily health.

many of us will already have experienced. However it’s also true that “flexibility” is built into many choices now in a way that was seldom the case in the past, and by carefully studying exactly how particular courses or classes operate you should be able to find a day and time that fits in with your existing commitments – there shouldn’t be the need to add any extra stress to what many of us already find a fairly enervating time of year. Whether it’s an art class, flower arranging, drama or swimming, you’ll find a host of options at a convenient location near you, and while it may not be your

primary objective it’s also the case that autumn classes of almost any kind give you the chance to meet new friends and discover shared interests. If the main aim is simply to develop a leisure interest, the scope is virtually limitless, because the range and sophistication of the courses now available is probably at an all time high, while if it’s academic – or something specifically related to your line of work – it may be more about finding exactly the right course that fits into a pattern of learning you have already developed.

For some it may simply be about being able to exchange a few pleasantries with people in a country you aim to visit on holiday, or it could be you already do a bit of painting, writing, or something similarly creative and are hoping to take what you’ve already achieved to the next level. The advertisers in this feature offer a broad selection of the sort of choices on offer, and are a great place to look for inspiration – those otherwise dreary late-year nights really can be used to open up a wealth of fun and positive opportunities.

MAKING A LOCHSIDE DIFFERENCE Friends of Loch Lomond will be striving to prevent a return of the Loch Lomond “tree tunnel” between Balloch and Tarbet in a special Make a Difference Day volunteer session on Monday, September 23. The group has a 10 year commitment to keep some stretches of Loch Lomond beside the A82 clear of reseeding trees and shrubs so that the views of the bonnie banks can continue to be enjoyed. If you wish to take part in this effort you can register your interest at info@ lochlomondtrossachs.org.uk.

This month: WILLS I was recently surprised to learn that in the UK over 50% of the adult population do not have a will. A will is an essential legal document that details your intentions as to the disposal of your estate following death. Dying without a will, known as being intestate, means that the statutory provisions for succession will be applied and your money, property or possessions will be distributed in terms of the Succession (Scotland) Act 1964, which may not accord with your wishes. In Scotland, if there is no will, a spouse or civil partner has certain automatic prior rights in relation to the heritable home in which

they reside and also in relation to part the moveable estate. In addition to this, any children, spouse or civil partner also have legal rights to a portion of the deceased’s moveable estate. In a situation of intestacy, any property that remained thereafter would pass to the children, or next closest living relative thereafter. If there are no further relatives then it falls to the crown. It should be noted that, even where there is a will, those entitled to claim legal rights can choose to do so, whether they have been included in the will or not. The rules surrounding succession can be complex and I suggest you speak to your solicitor if you require further advice.

DRYMEN LIBRARY FUTURE PLAN CLUB’S EPIC ROWING ATTEMPT Volunteers at Loch Lomond Rowing Club aim to stage an ambitious feat of endurance in a bid to raise funds for two new all-abilities toilets for the clubhouse and are taking entries for teams.

Drymen Library has been chosen as the launch pad for a new approach to Stirling council’s libraries and archives service.

local community, helped by its dedicated members of staff.

Outlined at a recent meeting in Drymen it aims to ensure libraries in all areas can continue to play an important role for local people.

Following her retirement in 1998, she handed the reins to Marie, who continued the communityled approach at the hub for another 15 years, with assistants Wendi Bates, Fiona Dewar and Christina Hamilton.

It seeks to bring that about by focusing on key areas including reading, literacy and learning as well as digital inclusion, and both economic and social wellbeing. Since opening its doors in 1979, Drymen Library is said to have been a crucial facility for the

Sir Hugh Fraser cut the ribbon there on June 5, 1979, with Alison Brown the first librarian in charge. She took to the role with great enthusiasm accompanied by her assistant, Marie Elder.

After that, Christina became the Community Library Officer. Along with Beth Crossan and Pamela Ross, Christina has “maintained the welcoming atmosphere at the facility, ensuring it remains at the heart of life in Drymen”.

The effort is being staged on Sunday, September 15 for a whole 12 hours, from 8am to 8pm, during which the rowers will slog away on indoor training machines placed outdoors, on the roof top terrace of the Sea Life Centre in Balloch. The organiser promises every penny raised from the event will help the club afford the much-needed new facilities, and meanwhile those already signed up to take part are getting in some regular practice ahead of the big event. Two-person teams will take it in turns to try and “row” the furthest in the 12-hour span – with the lure of some attractive prizes for winning teams. The event is also being flagged as an opportunity for people to find out more about what

rowing and the club are all about. Anyone with an interest will get a good initial impression just by checking out the club’s Facebook site, where you can also expect to see updates on next month’s Rowathon event. The club would like to sincerely thank The Sea life Centre for use of their iconic venue, for more details or to sign up please visit www.lochlomondrowingclub. co.uk.

style rhythms of Fleetwood Mac). The famous Ceilidh Tent – always one of the event’s main attractions – will this year boast a fantastic line up of talent, headed up by the multi-award winning Skerryvore.

“We’re thrilled that the Gathering now has a reputation around the world not just for its spectacular highland dancing, piping and heavy athletics events but also for its top class traditional Scottish music.

The Tiree band, two-time winners of Scotland’s traditional music’s ‘Live Act of the Year’ award, are no strangers to the Ceilidh Tent having played it in the past but will return this year after a meteoric rise to fame to wow a new audience with their unique, high energy set.

The Friday music event is Gig at the Gathering, sponsored by Belhaven, which will once again feature a brilliant selection of ceilidh performers.

RING BURIED FOR 350 YEARS A ring found by a visitor to Loch Lomond using a metal detector is expected to fetch £10,000 at auction next month.

found a rare “half angel” gold coin she later sold for more than £40,000. Thrilled with her latest find, she declared the ring as a treasure to the National Museum of Scotland, but it has decided not to buy it and it will now be released for general auction – where it should raise a tidy sum. Ms Vall told the BBC the ring “shone with a distinct bright yellow colour”, and she immediately realised she had found something more important than the usual ring-pulls and other detritus which metal detectors turn up all the time.

Ring found on the banks of Loch Lomond

Three and a half centuries after somebody very important somehow managed to lose it. The gold ring dates from the reign of James II and VII, was used by a royal courtier to imprint an official stamp on wax seals, and is engraved with the coat of arms of the Colman family.

It has been hidden just below the subsoil at Duck Bay Marina since around 1680, and was found by metal detector fan Michelle Vall from Blackpool – who has only been pursuing her hobby for a couple of years. Nevertheless it is the second time she has struck gold, as in 2017 she

It’s thought the ring may date from a period when King James (who was later ousted in the Glorious Revolution of 1688) was resident in Edinburgh, at a time when he ruled England, Scotland and Ireland as separate kingdoms. Meanwhile its supposed owner, Edward Colman, had even worse luck in 1678 when he was executed for treason for his alleged involvement in a plot to assassinate the king, who by this stage in his career had become hugely unpopular.

CUTTING A DISTINCTIVE DASH! Remember when “getting a haircut” was an unavoidable chore that cost time and money and left you feeling a bit like a freshly-shorn sheep? The team at Tip Top Barbershop on Main Street, Alexandria, have been happily banishing that sort of memory with a style of service that is fully 21st century, and dedicated to great results every time. Only recently they drummed up some extra trade by reminding everyone that the Trnsmt Festival was a key opportunity to look your best, and typical FB posts relay information about cutting edge hair products taken on board. There’s a commitment to oldfashioned service, perhaps, but everything else about this popular, go-ahead concern is right in tune with today’s high customer expectations.

Last year’s important refurbishment was the launch pad for a business which offers “bags of experience, a fresh new look, and bundles of banter”. Who would have thought that gents’ (all ages) hairdressing could be not only stylish but fun? The team were also delighted to win the “Best New Business” at the Scottish Business Awards. If you haven’t tried the Tip Top approach to barbering why not get in touch and enjoy finding out how this enterprising concern has managed to make such a name for itself in a relatively short space of time. For more information, or to book an appointment, call 01389 721066.

CHECK OUT BIKE ORIENTEERING RACE Riders are invited to sign up for a mountain bike orienteering event at Mugdock Country Park this month. The Scottish Mountain Bike Orienteering event takes place on Sunday August 4 and offers the challenge of orienteering while riding a bike. It is a “score” event, which means that participants aim to score as many points by reaching checkpoints with different values in a maximum time of three hours. The event is part of the MBO Score National League 2019 and attracts all kinds of riders, including beginners and leisure riders, as well as national championship and International GB Team riders. A spokesperson said: “Mountain bike orienteering is for anyone who loves being outdoors, likes a challenge, enjoys riding new areas and wants a friendly, lowkey event. “Anyone can take part as long as they have a bicycle and

helmet. You can even take the kids with you as a ‘Generation Team’. “Competitors take part in the same event and course, with each rider pushing to their own chosen limit. Riders can stop and enjoy the views or ride their legs off!” Mountain bike orienteering has many benefits. The spokesperson added: “Our sport expands people’s horizons and helps them to become more confident in exploring new areas as well as testing and developing map reading skills.” To enter see www.smbo.org.uk.

A WHOLE LOAD OF GRAPES

It’s 30 years since Scotland launched the Doors Open Day sessions. Allowing people a behind-thescenes look at buildings ranging from churches to fire stations – and next month what’s now a well-established tradition continues in West Dunbartonshire in fine style. Some truly fascinating buildings available to visit on Saturday, September 14.

Star attraction Maid of the Loch participates in Doors Open Day

They include the Masonic Lodge in Alexandria, the magnificent palladian mansion of Strathleven House, the restoration project for the Maid of the Loch and Dumbarton’s beautiful St Augustine’s church.

By the same token you don’t have to be a churchgoer, or of any particular denomination, to enjoy a tour of St Augustine’s – or Riverside parish and Westkirk, also on the itinerary.

You may think you know some or all of these familiar sites, but the doors open sessions provide the opportunity to find more of the “back story” of what these places are all about – for example about the lengthy campaign to restore the Maid of the Loch to full working order, and the triumphs and setbacks that have taken place along the way.

Finally the local selection this year includes Levengrove Park, and with it the chance to learn about an ongoing scheme of improvements designed to make it a public resource worth talking about. There is something in these choices to intrigue everyone, and – of course – there’s no charge for entry on the day.

SCHEME AIMS TO ENCOURAGE EXPLORING booklet include inspiration for perfect picnics, a wildlife spotting game and a guide to growing greenery for wee gardeners. Children can collect stickers from Trust places as they tick off the big adventures that they complete.

National Trust for Scotland encourages explorers

With the end of the school holidays still a couple of weeks away many families may well be thinking about some interesting ways to keep the offspring amused as boredom sets in. The National Trust for Scotland and supermarket chain Lidl have teamed up to get families exploring Scotland and enjoying its national and natural treasures. The teams at the Trust and Lidl have put their heads together to create the Lidl Book of Big Adventures series – a seasonal booklet that’s full of ideas

for spending fun family time together in Scotland. Copies are available to pick up at the Trust’s Arduaine Garden, Crarae Garden, Geilston Garden and the Hill House in Argyll and dozens of other Trust places across Scotland, as well as at all Scottish Lidl stores. Activities featured in the summer

Ross Millar, Regional Director at Lidl comments “We know how valuable spending time together as a family is. It’s for this reason that we have created the Lidl Book of Big Adventures series which is full of ideas for spending fun family time together and supports our customers in leading healthy and active lifestyles. We hope that people have trolley loads of fun exploring the Scottish landmarks this summer.” Mark Bishop, Director of Customer & Cause for the National Trust for Scotland said: “From castles to coastlines, art to architecture, wildlife to wilderness, there is so much to explore and enjoy across Scotland. We’re looking forward to welcoming families on their travels to our beautiful places, as they spend time together experiencing what they love about Scotland.” For information visit www.nts. org.uk/lidl.
