Education convener Councillor Karen Conaghan said: “With the sports pitch now in place, I know it’s starting to get exciting for the youngsters who will be moving here. “To get a tour of the facility was very helpful and the council can be very proud of the work being done to improve the educational opportunities for all of our children.” The state-of-the-art new campus will accommodate almost 500 children, and aims to replace old schools with a modern, effi cient building.

GarDen’s QuesTion TiMe the outcome of a review taking place over the winter. It seems likely by the time Geilston reopens next year we’ll already know the likely outcome of what could-be pivotal decision.
WHAT'S NEXT?: Geilston Park faces major changes
Could we be about to “lose” one of the area’s most beautiful visitor attractions – and if so what can be done about it? The Friends of Geilston have spent the latter part of this year mustering support for what could be major changes in the way Geilston Garden at Cardross is run in future. Run by the National Trust for Scotland, it’s a showpiece botanical glory which takes its place alongside great west coast gardens such as Dunure and Arduaine – but it is an elaborate
and expensive property to run, and it is in an area where many scenic attractions vie for attention. Nevertheless if you have never visited Geilston, but are perhaps hoping to in future, the latest word as we went to press was that the spring season has been confi rmed and will go ahead. What happens after that, however, will depend largely on
Friends of Geilston staged an initial meeting on the issues surrounding the review in October, and will certainly be continually active right through the process. They have been appealing for anyone with an interest in this jewel in the crown of West Dunbartonshire architecture and horticulture to get involved with the campaign to keep Geilston open and doing its impressive job for the forseeable future. For its part NTS has reportedly agreed to the formation of a working group which would include its own representatives and other obvious stakeholders. That way, it’s felt, all of the practical options can be identifi ed and evaluated on their own merits, with the aim of fi nding the best future for the property. You can keep up to date with Friends of Geilston on Facebook.

If you like a really ďŹ rst class Christmas concert you’ll probably have heard of Dunbartonshire’s SpringďŹ eld Cambridge Choir and Orchestra, who have a flagship event every December. Their annual concert in Glasgow Royal Concert Hall has been a sell-out success in past years, and has raised more than ÂŁ280,000 for CHAS - the charity that helps children with life-limiting illness and their families, best known locally for its Robin House resource at Balloch. The December 21 concert is everything you’d expect from such an accomplished group of performers, with a stupendous
150-voice chorus, junior chorus, full orchestra and guest soloists – and if you are lucky there might still be a ticket or two to spare.
The choir and orchestra members centre on Springfi eld Cambridge Parish Church, Bishopbriggs, and you can fi nd some excerpts from their previous concerts if you enter their name on Youtube – this year’s programme won’t be the same, but these clips do give a good idea of just what this amazingly talented group of Dunbartonshire performers can offer.
We don’t know who the guest artistes will be on the night, but The title for this year’s spectacular on previous form they are certain is Christmas Among Friends, to add a special extra dimension which features a wide-ranging to a night that aims to offer and heartwarming selection of something to please everybody festive favourites from across the who loves Christmas. globe. TiMe To GriT anD Bear iT to a fall.
GRITTING TIME: West Dunbartonshire are doing their best to prepare our roads this winter
It might not happen this year, but if there’s a really heavy deluge of snow – as last happened in a big way back in 2009 – we shouldn’t have to worry. A fl eet of eight gritting vehicles will be regularly treating primary routes across West Dunbartonshire this winter, with secondary routes being considered for gritting during prolonged periods of adverse weather. In addition, the Greenspace team will once again be treating priority footpaths in town centres and around schools, care homes and other key locations. With 422 roadside grit bins located across West
Dunbartonshire, no home should be more than 300metres away from a stock of grit which can be used by residents to treat pavements when required. The number of grit bins in the area is said to be one of the highest numbers per head of population in Scotland. If there is a big freeze then hopefully residents will help elderly and infi rm residents, particularly in the case of people who are especially vulnerable
One West Dunbartonshire councillor reportedly received 71 comments from people on social media one night last winter when there were hazardous icy conditions in areas including Bonhill.
Tel: 01389 729999 M Mob: ob:: 07899 878610 ob www.thistleblinds.co.uk
The arguments about how much should be spent and where continue, with the council said to be confi dent it can meet any unexpectedly heavy snowfall – but street level grit bins and shovels will be part of the strategy too For information on gritting routes, the location of all grit bins and other winter tips, visit www. west-dunbarton.gov.uk/gritting

The SSPCA has urged anyone thinking of buying a pet for Christmas to beware of the insidious and downright evil illegal puppy trade. It’s a message strongly backed by Dumbarton MSP Jackie Baillie, who visited the burgh’s rescue and rehoming centre to see for herself how the charity manages its heavy workload – and saves animals’ lives. Scottish SPCA chief executive Kirsteen Campbell said: “We were delighted to welcome
Jackie Baillie MSP to our centre here in Dumbarton. “It’s great to be able to showcase the fabulous work done by the team here at the centre and talk more widely about the Society’s aims - from increasing the maximum prison sentence for animal cruelty, to tackling the illegal puppy trade.

“As can be seen by the success of our open days, our centre here in Dumbarton has real community support and it’s great to be able to meet with community representatives like Jackie. Jackie Baillie said: “As a pet owner myself, it is heartbreaking to hear stories about animals which have been rescued from lives of abuse and neglect or even abandoned by their previous owners. “Fortunately, we have a dedicated SPCA team on our doorstep who go the extra mile to look after the animals in their care and help fi nd loving homes for hundreds of pets every year.” A pet should be for life, but sadly some people who buy on a whim get bored with their four-legged “toy” after a few months, leaving the SPCA to pick up the pieces. Equally illegal traders out of Ireland are guilty of horrifi c cruelty in the way they treat their “merchandise”, and nobody should contemplate buying from any but a reputable source. TraD GLorY BiD for rYan Cardross ďŹ ddler Ryan Young will ďŹ nd out this month if he has won the crown for Trad Music Album of the Year – in what would be a major triumph for the talented young musician. Last year we reported how Ryan had followed notable academic success by producing his own album, and now that album - titled as his name – is in the frame for the top award in the MG Alba Scots Trad Music Awards. However even if one of the other seriously good musicians in the fi nal pips him to the post he has defi nitely moved to the centre of the traditional music radar by getting into such an elite league of award candidates in the fi rst place.

It won’t be up and running until summer 2019, but between now and then you’ll see a great deal of activity at Dumbarton’s Posties Park. The park was given an early Christmas present with approval of funds that will see it transformed into a state of the art sports hub, with plans to include a six lane all weather athletics track, a grass football pitch, and modern changing facilities and gym. Best of all, perhaps, is that these facilities will be available to local schools, clubs and organisation, so it’s to be a community facility that will bring something new to the area certain to become a landmark local amenity. As with any major new development there will be a
fallow period where little seems to happen, then the project will steadily take shape, stage by stage, with initial work set to begin in summer 2018. It’s a big commitment, but is part of a policy of boosting amenities that promote health and fi tness and recognises that the days of unforgiving blaes pitches and no facilities should be things of the past. The other two major public projects which will make 2017 a year to remember are the upgrades at Levengrove Park and the walkway to link the town centre to the castle.
BABY AND MarkET aT TODDLER GROUP THE SHorES NEEDS HELPERS If you’re still chasing last minute Christmas presents – or just fancy a nice day out away from towns – the weekend of December 2 and 3 could be the ideal time to pay a visit to Loch Lomond Shores. There will be artisan food and drink at the St Andrew’s Celebration Market from 10am to 4pm, and also a great selection of arts and crafts “with a very Scottish feel”. Most of what’s on the stalls is said to be “fresh, local, seasonal, unique, artisan or handmade – so no two markets are exactly the same, and you’ve the chance of picking up an unusual quality gift.
Cardross Baby and Toddler group is looking to recruit more volunteers to help keep the group running.
The group has been running for a long time and is a friendly social gathering for parents and carers. We meet in Cardross Parish Church Hall at Station Rd, Cardross G82 5NL every Wednesday from 10-11.30am. Aimed at 0-5 year olds. Everyone is welcome for arts, crafts, free play, snack and a sit down and coffee for all. £2 per week. Free to volunteers. Facebook page 'Cardross Baby and Toddlers Group'. What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn
This month: REWARDING BEST EFFORTS! Last month I had the pleasure of attending the Scottish Health Awards in Edinburgh. Alongside other doctors there were people involved in the NHS in many different ways, including physiotherapists, optometrists, nurses, speech therapists, managers, carers and volunteers. It was uplifting to hear the stories of how people had been recognised for the special attention and care which they had shown to patients. At a time when we are often hearing stories of failures within the NHS, it reminded us that the vast majority of healthcare professionals often give a little of themselves, which makes their work more than
just a job, and makes people feel like a real individual and not just another patient. A few days later the new Scottish GP contract, previously unchanged since 2004, was unveiled. This puts patients at the centre, but will see GPs’ role changing to “Expert Generalists”, possibly having a more handsoff role but using their knowledge and expertise to supervise and support other professionals such as physiotherapists, pharmacists and nurses to ensure people get the most appropriate care from the person best placed to give it. Hopefully as things progress, we will see even more clinicians nominated by grateful patients and colleagues!

Local residents are being urged to make sure every last empty tin, foil tray or aerosol makes it into a blue household recycling bin over the festive season. The aim of the council’s campaign is to remind residents to recycle all of the metal packaging found around their home. Used metal packaging can be recycled into new products at a far lower cost to the environment than making them from raw materials. Making drinks cans from recycled metal saves up to 95 per cent of the energy and greenhouse gas emissions needed to make both aluminium and steel from raw materials. Local regeneration chief Councillor Iain McLaren said:
“We want to encourage our residents to think about metal packaging found throughout their home, not just in the kitchen but in the bathroom and bedroom. “Food and drink cans, foil and empty aerosols are all easily and endlessly recyclable. Don’t forget, every can recycled saves enough energy to run a TV for four hours – so a small action like putting your empty bean tin into your blue bin can make a big difference. “I hope we can get as many people involved as possible.”

Legal Matters with Gill Bowman BA LLB
This month: PROCURATOR FISCAL The Crown Offi ce of Procurator Fiscal Services (COPFS) is the body responsible for the prosecution of all crimes in Scotland. They also investigate sudden or suspicious deaths and handle complaints made against the police. Procurator Fiscals are qualifi ed solicitors who work for COPFS and are therefore civil servants. They receive reports about crimes from the police and then consider what action is to be taken. It is their job to decide if a crime has been committed and, if so, whether there is enough evidence for prosecution. Prosecution should be in the
public interest. This means they must asses the interests of the victim, accused and the general wider community before progressing the matter to court. The Fiscal then prepares the case for court prosecution by collating the evidence gathered by police and other bodies and summoning witnesses. They then present the case themselves to the court for Justice of the Peace and Sheriff Courts matters. If the case is being heard in the High Court then they are preparing the case on behalf of an Advocate acting as Crown Counsel. Like defence lawyers, they play an integral role in the justice system, which could not operate without them.

Give Santa a help Costs go up in winter, even before you consider Christmas, so West Dunbartonshire Foodshare is asking for help with food parcels and other essentials. Meanwhile there’s also still time to contribute to the Christmas Toy Appeal, with a drop-off point at the Titan Enterprise Business Centre reception in Clydebank. Does your workplace normally do a Secret Santa? Why not talk to your colleagues and ask if they would like to buy a toy instead and donate to the Christmas Toybank - or set out a box for donations of food leading up to Christmas?
Dunbartonshire Foodshare’s Facebook site you’ll find regular updates on how donations are being used. Even if you’ve donated before, and know where your local dropoff point is, it’s worth a couple of minutes on the Foodshare site to get an idea of items that are particularly needed, and how you can donate most effectively.
The Foodshare organisation supports many families across West Dunbartonshire who are experiencing the effects of poverty and find Christmas especially difficult. It also has several good ideas for how to donate effectively, and welcomes all contributions – they all help to make a difference to someone in real need. There are drop off points for donations in every part of our area, and on West

sTars BaCK MaiD funDs play a specially composed song about the Maid. Archive footage and photography runs throughout the fi lm, showing the Maid in her heyday.

Top actor Bill Paterson has joined forces with music legends Phil Cunningham and Aly Bain to help save a famous Loch Lomond attraction. The celebrities have created a short fi lm about the UK’s last paddle Steamship, Maid of the Loch, to coincide with the launch of a new crowdfunding campaign.
The six-week campaign ends on December 7 and it’s hoped that people will continue to donate right until the end.
In the new fi lm, Paterson, whose roles include Outlander, Shetland The aim is to raise £125,000 over and Dad’s Army, brings his fl air for six weeks to buy and install the story-telling to the tale of Maid special steam boiler that will power the Maid’s engine and once of the Loch. As Bill takes viewers on a tour of the ship, Phil & Aly again allow her to sail the loch.
Paterson said: “The Maid has a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity right now to sail again, thanks to a generous pledge from the Heritage Lottery Fund. There has been a long running bid to raise the funds to restore her. But few may realise that right now this is not just a long-held dream, it is a very real possibility. “However, Heritage Lottery Fund’s commitment of £3.8 million funding is only a pledge that will be awarded if Maid of the Loch’s charity, Loch Lomond Steamship Company, can raise £1 million. That’s where this campaign comes in and why Phil, Aly and I made this film.” To watch the fi lm and donate before December 7 see www. crowdfunder.co.uk/maid-tosail. clappy laughs and pantomime dames of the big shows in town, but where this production will score will be the tense build-up to the fi nal scene ... when the heroine of the piece must solve a riddle or lose everything that’s dear to her.
The human brain remembers more negative memories than positive ones. This is due to the negativity bias the brain sets up as a defense mechanism.

DPT END 2017: From December 2nd you can enjoy DPT's version of Rumpelstilltskin
Dumbarton People’s Theatre marked a major milestone in local drama this year with their recent production of The Accrington Pals – a poignant story of men and women caught up in the First World War. Now, to round off the year’s busy programme, DPT are staging one of the creepiest pantomimes of them all – based on a fairy story by the legendary Brothers Grimm. This Germanic duo were masters of the genre, and Rumpelstiltskin is easily one of their best – and the most famous.
Some will have seen Robert Carlyle playing this unwholesome character in the Once Upon A Time TV series a few years ago – Rumpelstilstkin is the ultimate Bad Imp, and likes to strike dodgy deals which pose his hapless victims all sorts of trouble.
For youngsters who haven’t seen it before it can be a scary introduction to the dark tales of fairyland in medieval Germany – you have to wait until the very end to fi nd if things are going to end up happily ever after - but on the other hand it’s in much the same territory as Harry Potter’s adventures , and everyone enjoys them. To be staged at Dumbarton’s Denny Civic Theatre from December 2 to December 9 this promises to be a great local show that will prove a brilliant family night out.
Tickets for all Productions are priced £5, and can be obtained from members, from McDermids Newsagents (Keystore), at the Box Offi ce on performance nights, or It’s a fairy tale with a real Gothic email Dumbartonpeoplestheatre@ feel to it, very unlike the happy- outlook.com

WINTER RUN: Exercise is still a goer in the runup to Christmas with the West of Scotland Athletics Club
West of Scotland Athletics Club are organizing a timely reminder that runs in Balloch Park continue all year round, with a special charity fundraising event on Sunday, December 3. The causes to benefi t this year are Funding Neuro and new charity partner Sporting Memories Foundation (Scotland), and all participants have to do is make an “honesty donation” to the link http://www.virginmoneygiving. com/team/2017FESTIVERUNFUNDI NGNEUROSPORTINGMEMORIES
The half marathon route will be from Dumbarton to Anniesland Lock 27 ,1100 Crow Road, Anniesland, Glasgow G13 1JT along the cycle path. The events are not timed as they will be classed as a training run, however, the route will be supported with course marshals and signage.
A Training Run hotline number is available, so that you can call to check to see if the event has been cancelled due to severe weather – it’s 07534 365271. If you’ve never taken part there are plenty of other opportunities to take advantage of during the rest of the year – our picture shows one of the summer runs, when the weather was just a little different. The concept belongs to West Dunbartonshire Athletics Club, which despite having members who are often highly trained and highly committed, there seems to be a helpful ethos of “everyone has to start somewhere”.
The inclusive aspect of the club’s activities now extends to everyone who is capable of modest walking or jogging exercise, so there’s nothing to FROM prove and no goals you have to As well as the 10km and Half £1250 Once you’ve donated just let Alan set to take part in the regular Marathon distance there will events at the Park. also be 5k and 2k options. A new anti-smoking campaign aims to challenge adults who buy or give cigarettes to young people. Research has found that young people who smoke usually get their tobacco from friends and family. Evidence also reveals these these adults think they are “doing them a favour”. In response, the #notafavour campaign will make it clear that those helping under-18s to get cigarettes are also helping them into addiction, ill-health and fi nancial problems. The campaign, which has been developed by Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) Scotland and the Society of Chief Offi cers of Trading Standards in Scotland.

COMPANY... At The Kitchen Depot, we have always prided ourselves in our family values, on always being prepared to do whatever it takes to ensure that our customers are treated exactly as we would like to be treated ourselves - with courtesy, consideration and professionalism.
But lest we ever become complacent, we actively encourage ongoing feedback - here's what Mr Lee Sanderson has to say:
"The most incredible thing about The Kitchen Depot has been your sky-high levels of customer service. Too often a company will promote customer service as a core value, only to reveal a hollow promise when they don't live up to it." Mr Sanderson continues: "My favourite retailer is John Lewis because I know that they will do whatever they can to put something right if it goes wrong. The Kitchen Depot has performed to the same high standard."
"To favourably compare a small family business to Britain's most respected retailer is not something that I do lightly but you are well worthy of the comparison." Well, thanks for that, Mr Sanderson - please excuse us while we blush with pride. When it comes to looking after our customers, The Kitchen Depot is never knowingly undersold.
