DEBATE IGNITES ON LOCH SITE If you thought Brexit was an interminable debate with no definite finishing point its local equivalent must be the lochside plan which generated tens of thousands of objections earlier this year. The Flamingo Land/Scottish Enterprise plan is off the agenda for the foreseeable future – it’s not impossible it may be revived in some form at some point – but not the colossal debate it provoked. In the words of the extremely wellknown Christmas single starring Noddy Holder and friends: “Look to the future – it’s only just begun”. While the plan to launch a tourism development has been sunk by a storm of protest that simply could not be ignored the battle to decide alternative uses for the site will be one of the big local themes of 2020. Scottish Green MSP Ross Greer led a recent Scottish Parliament debate on the subject, and – perhaps
unsurprisingly – put forward a robust case for turning that specific area into what would amount to a centre of excellence for ecotourism. A meeting in Balloch had found community members “bubbling with ideas” – for example the idea of a community buy-out was mooted – with the aim of not only safeguarding the environment but also boosting the local economy. National Parks must not become “the playthings of rich developers”, Mr Greer argued, warning that more of the sort of plans almost 60,000 people rejected may be forthcoming in future. Another politician with strong views on the subject is Labour’s

local MSP Jackie Baillie, who basically wants the failed initial proposal to be binned and for the Scottish Government to “end the absurdity of public money being used to pay Flamingo Land to come and take the land from us, which no one appears to want”. She also favours a community-led scheme for the Balloch side of the National Park, and like Ross Greer appears to have a broad caucus of public opinion on her side. There is a huge political discourse in the offing over the value of the land and its ownership, and how the original deal was set up, but that can be consigned to the political arena for the time being. Meanwhile Scottish Enterprise
must be considering how best to reappraise what has beyond question, regardless of all politics, been a major setback for the original scheme or anything likely to resemble it in future. Unlike Brexit, the community in and around Balloch are not about to become simply bored by this red hot local issue, and a pivotal debate appears certain to gather momentum in the new year. Regardless of individual standpoints and politics it could well be that how this dilemma (or opportunity) resolves itself will have major implications for all sorts of future development proposals across Scotland in years to come. However it finally pans out, Balloch will be leading the way.

In his stark appraisal of the festive season it’s certainly all about giving ourselves as much food as we can physically consume and as many goodies as we can carry away. Even allowing for the legendary Scottish spirit of communitarianism there’s maybe more than a grain of truth in that – but it’s certainly not the whole story. For many local families Christmas is a trial, thanks particularly to the savage effects of Universal Credit on top of all the existing problems – and that’s where those who can

A CHARMING END TO THE YEAR VILLAGE FAYRE No run-up to the festive season would be complete without its annual pantomime (“oh no it wouldn’t), and this year’s offering from Dumbarton People’s Theatre is one of the best. It’s Cinderella, a rags to riches tale of how an attractive but downtrodden maiden emerges as the belle of the ball and evades her unpleasant siblings (aka “The Ugly Sisters”) to score an instant hit with a member of the Royal Family of whatever country in which the yarn is supposed to take place.
this issue went to press, and the show – guaranteed to have some local flourishes to the original plot - runs in Denny Civic Theatre from December 7 to 14 (excluding Sunday December 8). Check for full details on the group’s Facebook site.
There’s a bit more – instead of a taxi or limo the transport to the grand ball where her romantic liaison occurs is a pumpkin pulled by mice (for example) ...but that’s just the start.

There are plenty of niche shopping opportunities to be found all over the area at this time of year, but one of the most atmospheric and fun is surely the special Christmas market in Drymen, to be staged on Saturday, December 7 from 10am to 2pm in Drymen village hall. On offer at this unique local event is a full panoply of Christmas attractions, with stalls offering unique handcrafted gifts and accessories.
Cinders manages to lose one of her legendary glass slippers on the way home (this sometimes happens on Christmas nights out), and when it is retrieved her whole future depends on being able to put her foot in it.
The market – which also supports a number of local small businesses and charities – is promised to be a warm and friendly shopping experience.

PARK WANTS RID OF GHOST TENTS It might be the middle of winter, but the National Park is keen to get over one very important message on “wild camping” – at any time of year. It has issued a whole list of do’s and don’ts for visitors to follow, most of which should be common sense, but one particular problem – which we’ll call “ghost tents” – is a purely modern syndrome that needs some explaining. It’s one that will be familiar to anyone who has seen the notorious aftermath of certain boisterous rock festivals, and will mystify people of an older generation who might find it hard to believe anyone could be so profligate – or litter-prone. But it’s true – some tents, not particularly durable, are so cheap that revellers simply abandon them in situ when they finally stagger off home. In recent years it has been common to see whole encampments of abandoned tents (with all sorts of
garbage abandoned with them, inside and out) simply left for somebody else to dismantle and clear away. Now the problem has evidently arrived on Lomondside, and with it a further burden for the people striving to keep the natural environment free of litter blight for others to enjoy. Nik Turner, Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park Litter Prevention Manager, added: “The National Park is one of Scotland’s most iconic destinations and we’re pleased to welcome anyone who
wishes to come and explore this beautiful area. “However, it is vitally important that we all play our part in ensuring that the wildlife and natural beauty of this area is protected. “The key thing to remember when visiting is to leave no trace and take any waste home with you. To minimise your impact, try and bring reusable items such as water bottles, food boxes and good quality camping or hiking gear that doesn’t need to be thrown away after one or two uses.”

VALE WRITERS’ STAR ENCOUNTER ‘Start’, while The “funnysophical” performance poet Gracey Flair was the proverbial something completely different!
Left to right: Evelyn Lawrie, Ann MacKinnon, Mary Irvine, Robin Lloyd-Jones, Catriona Malan, Gordon Burgess
Vale writers and their Helensburgh friends – collectively the Mackintosh Group – had a close encounter with one of the area’s great literary heroes recently, namely Robin Lloyd-Jones. This veteran maestro of the printed word is perhaps best known for his stunning 1983 novel Lord of the Dance, about the adventures of an Englishman in war-torn Mughal India, but that is really just one highlight of a multifaceted career which includes film, radio, key university roles and at least one highly important committee post – chairing a group which helps persecuted writers. He was one of the undoubted stars of a series of special “An
Evening With” sessions in which he was one of six very different authors invited to talk about their work. In his case he chose from several of the many others he has published, including Autumn Voices, while Pat McIntosh gave the background of her Gil Cunningham mediæval mystery series (of which her latest is The Lanimer Bride). Graham Morgan offered insight into a personal experience with his beautifully written autobiography
Stewart Noble regaled the group with his knowledge of local history, while Mary Irvine gave a slide show to illustrate how living and working in Greece influenced her recent novel The Wind Whispers Her Name. Refreshments were kindly supplied by the venue hosts, Helensburgh library. All the events were well attended and requests for more of the same are being considered. Books by Robin, Pat, Graham and Mary are all available from Amazon. Copies of 200 Years of Helensburgh, edited by Stewart, are available to buy from the library. A grand finale to the series will be held in Helensburgh Library on Wednesday, December 11 at 7pm when the Mackintosh Writers will entertain with their own writings including some with a Christmas theme in what’s promised to be an eclectic mix… along with (free!) mince pies and wine (soft drinks for drivers), and all are welcome.

The award is for exceptional acts of bravery, and the actions taken by DC Craig McGarry and Sergeant John Smith certainly fall into that category. While in plain clothes and on foot patrol both these officers became aware of screaming children running from a nearby house. As they approached they were met by a large group of men and it was apparent there had been “a significant disturbance”. As the officers identified themselves, they noticed that two of the group were carrying a very large knife and a meat cleaver. One of them also was carrying a single-barrel sawn-off shotgun. After “extensive and prolonged” foot chases both men – who posed a deadly risk to the public, and of course to the officers, were arrested. That, of course, is the short version. Reading between the lines this was a terrifying incident which could have had a drastic
outcome had it not been for the determination, intelligence and – of course – sheer bravery of the policemen concerned. Speaking after presenting the awards at an event at Edinburgh Castle, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said: “These awards recognise acts of true courage by members of the public, our emergency services and our voluntary rescue organisations. “They are our way of saying a very big thank you to individuals

who, through their bravery, have made a very positive difference to Scotland. “Every single award winner provides an extraordinary story of courage and calmness under pressure. The group, which covers Balfron, Fintry, Drymen, Buchlyvie and Killearn, has been going for more than two decades but is currently experiencing a shortage of drivers – and of course that has a knockon effect on how successfully it can operate. Lorna Dunbar, the charity’s support officer for the area says: “Social isolation is one of society’s biggest problems, especially among the older generation, but we see the huge difference social events like ours can make to someone who perhaps doesn’t have the chance to interact with others as much as they would like. “We believe everyone should have the opportunity of a social life, no matter how old they are and we’d really love to hear from locals who can help us enrich the lives of the older generation in their communities.” Drivers are asked to devote just a few hours one Sunday a month to the charity.
“It’s really not much to ask if you’ve got a spare Sunday afternoon and for anyone new to volunteering it’s an ideal way to get involved,” said Lorna. “Guests are usually over 75 and our volunteers are generally much younger so it’s also a great way to bring the generations together.” To find out more about becoming a volunteer or guest of Reengage, contact Lorna Dunbar at lorna.dunbar@reengage.org.uk or tel 01738 730249.

An engaging new way of persuading local kids to abandon their X-boxes and phones and discover the magic of books is apparently a runaway success. However it doesn’t cut out online activity altogether, because there’s a strong social media element. Look For a Book West Dunbartonshire is helping children to get outdoors and feel passionate about reading by looking for new books to read and hiding others for children to find and enjoy. After reading a book, the children hide it in locations across the area and post clues and photos on Facebook to help other children find the hidden treasures.

MAMMA MIA – SILVER SUCCESS FOR BREWERY is a niche Scottish dessert involving HERE WE GO! Crannachan raspberries – but also the name of what has now become an award-winning creation from an enterprising Dumbarton brewer. There’s no shortage of special nights out to enjoy in and around Dumbarton, Balloch and the Vale this year, unsurprisingly often with themes that seem to be as evergreen as your average fir tree. For example on Friday and Saturday December 20 and 21 at the Lomond Park Hotel in Alexandria you can dust down those flares hidden at the back of the wardrobe, dig out the glitter, and get in touch with your inner Abba favourite (Agnetha is probably most popular for the ladies) at a fun-filled Abba tribute night.
The Lennox Brewery is rightly proud of its recent stunning success at the Scottish Independent Beer Awards, which puts it firmly on the map for more of the same in years to come. SIBA is a body representing top brewers across Scotland, and its rigorous judging of quality craft products yields reliable endorsements of the very best – so any brewery gaining
Recent social media posts from the brewery (which operates from the Broadmeadow Industrial Estate) indicate that the next offering will be not unconnected to its own resident beehives – so fans of quality ale can look forward to something sweet to enjoy over the festive season or early new year.

Andrew Muir says that he is the only candidate that lives in the local area and is standing as an independent candidate for the West Dunbartonshire area. He is doing this as a matter of conscience due to the human rights policies of our current MP and his SNP colleagues on West Dunbartonshire Council. He has previously stood in the 2012 & 2017 Council Elections and the 2016 Holyrood Election on similar issues.
Andrew’s wife Claire asked Mr Docherty to attend a meeting to discuss the Mental Health Act, also in July but he had better things to do. This Act, which allows those deemed to be mentally ill to be administered medication against their wishes, is a practice prohibited by the

Locally-made quality ales have been the big story in beer production in recent years, within what has also been called the cask ale renaissance (bottled beer is not cask, unless bottle-conditioned, but it’s certainly “craft”, and part of the same syndrome).
We’re told tickets (5p short of £20, includes three course meal and entertainment) are going fast – so if you are interested check out the hotel’s FB without delay.
In July Martin Docherty went out of his way to vote in favour of abortion in Northern Ireland. When Andrew tried to stop abortions in the local area by submitting an open forum question last year, the council were unanimously against this, with two SNP members gleefully standing up and cheering.
LAST POSTING DATES (UK)
United Nations but unfortunately allowable in the UK. In Andrew’s opinion, using false statements on documents, Claire was unlawfully detained in 2006, was given dangerous drugs for no reason and assaulted by NHS staff. These are criminal offences. To date no-one has investigated this properly, either in Dumbarton or Scotland. This failure to investigate and learn has meant that other people have suffered similar consequences, with many people dying unnecessarily. Andrew recently, while working in Bristol, found out about the needless death of an 18-year old boy

who was given the same drugs as Claire against his and his families’ will.
and their surgeries and Jim Bollan is vilified for raising procurement issues.
This treatment of the most weak and vulnerable by the NHS leads to a culture where there is a grave risk anyone will receive poor care. The health board is unelected and has closed many bits of the Vale of Leven Hospital. There are no effective safeguards against ill treatment in hospital or care homes and this area has one of the worst life expectancies in the UK.
The SNP are a one issue party. Since they spend all their time and energy on independence they choose their candidates on this basis leaving them very weak on all other topics e.g. climate change, poverty, employment, education, housing, crime etc.
The SNP do not operate in an open, democratic manner. When Andrew was in the party he was not deemed suitable to be an election candidate. When not given a reason for this, he then stood as an independent candidate in 2017. As a result of this he was banned from the party for two years and the Dumbarton branch recently refused him permission to return. He is not permitted to attend their Conferences and the Minister for Mental Health refuses to meet him.
Andrew is 61 years old and has lived in Dumbarton since 1982. He is a regular member of St Patrick’s Church and has been on the committee of Silverton & Overtoun Community Council for many years. He is a former school teacher and currently works as a pensions actuary. Whilst not campaigning Andrew’s main hobby is chess – he won a Gold Medal at the 1998 Chess Olympiad in Russia and recently represented Scotland in Georgia.
He feels that the Council is corrupt e.g. councillors have blocked him from emails The above constitutes the views of Andrew Muir

December 2019 | What's Up Doc?
What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn This month: What is Visual Stress? Visual stress (also known as Meares Irlen Syndrome MIS) is a processing condition which makes reading difficult. It can create disturbing visual patterns throughout test, which can lead to fatigue, headache and frustration when reading. Visual stress affects around 20-25% of the general population, but this may rise to somewhere in the region of 60% in the dyslexic population. Although closely linked to dyslexia and other educational difficulties it is a separate condition on its own.
Could you have visual stress? The following symptoms are common in Visual Stress: • Movement of words when reading
• Coloured fringing throughout black and white test
• Patterns throughout text
• Fatigue
• Blurring of text
• Headaches
• Glare off white paper
• Restless/fidgety when reading
What can we do to help? Visual Stress can be reduced if not removed completely by the use of colour. Initially the condition is treated with the use of coloured acetate called an overlay. An overlay assessment will last around 30 mins and costs £40. This includes a short report and an overlay for you to take away.

HAVE YOURSELF A VERY HEALTHY CHRISTMAS…?
This festive season many people will gain weight, tipping themselves over into obesity, joining the 26% of the UK population who are already obese. The tradition of excess food and drink, which specialises in high fat and sugar foods (think mince pies and chocolates!), at Christmas unfortunately has health costs. Obesity leads to heart disease, arthritis, depression, poor sleep and diabetes, to name but a few diseases, but fortunately it is something which can be avoided or changed without medication. “Lifestyle Medicine” is a growing movement which tries to address lifestyle related choices and illness by helping
people regain control and enjoy better health, to avoid illness and prescriptions. The general idea is that time spent by doctors or nurses, either one-to-one or in groups, used to enable and empower people to make healthier choices, can slowly change peoples’ ideas and may be a long term way to reduce the burden on the NHS. The Lifestyle Medicine Global Alliance is an international group promoting this focussed approach. Recently the NHS Chief Executive said we need to “get serious about obesity or bankrupt the NHS” Maybe it’s time we changed our Christmas menus for some healthier options!

BEFRIENDING... December 2019 | Local Business
THE GIFT OF YOUR TIME Strathleven Place, Dumbarton G82 1BA, Tel: 01389 733030
CAN YOU HELP? Ben View offer a befriending service to those over 60 within our local community who are experiencing social isolation and / or loneliness, who live alone and who have full mental capacity. The Befriending programme has been running for approx 18 months and we are now looking to extend this so we can reach more people within our community who would benefit. This is a free service and is supported by wonderful volunteers People can become socially isolated for a variety of reasons, such as getting older or weaker, no longer being the hub of their family, leaving the workplace, the deaths of spouses and friends, or through disability or illness. Whatever the cause, it’s shockingly easy to be left feeling alone and vulnerable, which can lead to depression
and a serious decline in physical & mental health and wellbeing. Someone who’s lonely probably also finds it hard to reach out. There’s a stigma surrounding loneliness, and older people tend not to ask for help because they have too much pride or for the majority they feel like they are a burden. Befriending is unique and distinct from other services. Research points to a number of key benefits for older people, including: they feel life is worth living; they feel they are not forgotten and they belong; they know they have a friend who cares, who is not family; they feel less lonely and less anxious; they no longer feel a burden to society; their emotional and physical health is improved.
Lunch Club
A social lunch club for older people operates from Monday to Friday, this service currently has seventy members. The emphasis on the service is the social aspect, we provide a warm, caring and safe environment where people can come together to enjoy the company of others. For many who come along this is the only activity they have outside their own home on a weekly basis. The members enjoy nothing more than a good blether and time to spend with friends old and new. A two course lunch followed by tea and biscuits is available along with transport to and from the Centre. If you have a family member or know of anyone who would benefit from this service please give us a call. For further information on our Lunch club please call and ask for Leona MacLeod our Lunch Club Co-ordinator or email to leona@benviewcentre.org.uk

Bob has been part of our befriending service from the start and said for him it has been a life saver “I look forward every week to the visits, I had felt really low, before the befriending I never had anyone, I have no family locally and I am not comfortable within group settings so I found myself on my own at home all the time, the comfort I get from my visits every week has truly changed my life, I have something to look forward to every week”. We are hoping those of you with a couple of spare hours per week will come forward and be our next volunteer befrienders, allowing us to reach more people who we currently have on our waiting list for the service. No previous experience is required, full training and support is given to all our volunteers on an on-going basis.

VOLUNTEERS Volunteering is the gift of the commitment of your time. A volunteer is someone who gives their time and energy for the benefit of the community which is undertaken without financial gain. Volunteers come from all walks of life and volunteer for many different reasons. The support services we offer through our service such as, lunch club, the youth programme and the befriending service all rely on volunteers. Each of these offers a different set of skills and we can support you to and what best suits you, If you are looking to extend your skills, give something to your community or just have some fun, meeting new people then come along and see what opportunities we have available for you. At present we are looking to increase our volunteer team to ensure we can continue to offer a high level of service within the community. Please call 01389 733030 where you will be put through to the person who deals with the area you are interested in or email enquiries@benviewcentre.org.uk

STRUCTURE IS FIT FOR A QUEEN Thanks to new boat and train connections with destinations on “the other side” of Loch Lomond it’s now possible – in the summer months – to enjoy a day trip to one of the Victorian era’s most enduring engineering marvels… the Katrine Aqueduct. my warmest wishes for their continued prosperity and happiness.” The commemoration of the official opening included three special public sailings of the vessels the SS Sir Walter Scott and the Lady of the Lake by the Steamship Sir Walter Scott Ltd from Trossachs Pier to Stronachlachar.
It may not sound very exciting, and is a very familiar sight to those living or working nearby, but the recent 160th anniversary of the structure was a gala occasion – complete with a special re-enactment of its official inauguration by Queen Victoria, in person. Actors donned Victorian attire and a modern-day lookalike monarch followed in her footsteps to repeat her exact speech on the day it opened in 1859.
The aqueduct takes water from the loch to treatment works that supply 1.3 million people in Glasgow and west central Scotland – and in Victoria’s day transformed people’s lives. Her Royal Highness told her audience: “Such work is worthy of the enterprise and philanthropy of Glasgow and I trust it will be blessed with complete success. I desire that you convey to the great community which you represent
Gary Caig, Scottish Water’s water operations manager west, said: “The aqueduct has certainly, in Queen Victoria’s words, 'improved the health and comfort of the city’s vast population’ and continues to do so to this day'.”

December 2019 | Christmas All Wrapped Up
CHRISTMAS
ALL
WRAPPED UP
We all know somebody who has everybody in their address book “sorted for Christmas gifts by about September – selected, bought, wrapped and labelled. At the other extreme we all know plenty of people who run round the shops in a state of near panic with only days to go – which is why so many shops stay open later on Christmas Eve: they know there are desperate potential buyers
out there without a clue of what to buy for Auntie Jean or cousin Jimmy. On the one hand most of us don’t want to bowl through a catalogue of names and simply tick them off mechanistically – to be truly successful a gift has to have some element of spontaneity and individuality about it – but on the other hand if you have several people to buy presents for you can only put off the critical decision for so long before that desperation factor clicks in. One solution, for at least some gifts, is to buy entitlements which are useful but not dull. It could be an excursion in a hot air balloon,

to be “cashed inâ€? at any time over the next year, or it could be as simple as gift tokens for something really special‌ the sort of thing the person concerned wouldn’t normally treat themselves to. Don’t, however, buy someone membership of a gym – that could be taken entirely the wrong way, and would also give the recipient a sense of obligation – or a box set of “Teach Yourself Spanishâ€? lessons‌ again, it carries more than a hint that the person concerned should be doing something “usefulâ€?, whereas the whole point of a present is that it should be enjoyable and fun‌ a pleasant surprise, not an obligation.
With youngsters the problem of getting exactly the “right present can be even more daunting, because so much of young people’s attention span is wrapped up in electronics, whether phones or games. However if that special young person has some other existing interest – it could be cycling, say, or swimming – you may be able to find a gift that will lend that activity some value-added experience, and again you may find that if you buy vouchers you can leave it to the recipient to choose the item they most want or need. Meanwhile, again with young people, if you are truly stumped

you can always go for the old fall-back option of simply handing over some cash, but perhaps earmarked for something special – say a contribution towards a foreign holiday to a place they’ve always wanted to visit but never been able to afford. These “gifts in kind” can dramatically cut the number of difficult shopping choices you have to make, allowing you to focus on getting something uniquely suited to the handful of people who really need to be catered for in a very specific way… your husband, wife or partner isn’t going to appreciate something dull and utilitarian, and the gift has to say “I really tried”.
the nonmainstream at an affordable price.
That is where local shopping can sometimes pay unexpected dividends. If you don’t have a lot of cash to spend try looking in charity shops, where you’ll sometimes find remarkably individual items, from ornaments to jewellery, that would be hard to find and horribly expensive in mainstream shops.
Separate your food shopping expeditions from your gift-buying trips, and give yourself so many hours to come up with a set number of gift choices on any particular occasion, don’t leave it until December 24, and it should all start to make sense as the great day approaches.
For small but important gifts you can try craft shops, Christmas markets, farmers markets… anywhere that specialises in offering
Who knows – you may even find the whole business of buying those special annual presents turns out to be fun.

Mediation is a form of dispute resolution that is an alternative to instructing solicitors to raise court proceedings. It can be a practical and effective method of resolving matters, so long as all participants approach the process voluntarily and with an open mind.

It allows people to find their own solution by coming together and discussing their respective views in a calm and constructive manner. The benefit of using a solicitor mediator is that you are then able to draw on their legal knowledge.
The only exception to this rule is in relation to any factual financial details exchanged between the parties, meaning specific values of assets and not the discussion regarding possible division of them. SENIORS SPECIAL FOR SSPCA A coffee morning is always a nice way for local senior citizens to spend some time – catching up with friends, discussing local events – but one Dumbarton event is a bit different from the usual occasion.
FESTIVE PARTY AT THE ROCK
Special coffee morning event seems set to become a regular happening
Dumbarton Football Club and Sons supporters Trust are bringing back their special Christmas party night on Saturday 14th December to the Dumbarton Stadium venue by popular demand.
“We started our O.A.Tea event as we know that many older people may not be able to have pets of their own, or they may have lost one recently. We wanted to offer an opportunity to get to know some of our residents in need of a home.
A fun occasion that’s reckoned ideal for either an office night out or get-together with friends and family. Tickets, priced £30, are sold as tables of eight, but individual tickets are also available. On offer is a three course meal, games and dancing, and the evening’s entertainment (complete with DJ) runs from 7pm till midnight. For further details and to book visit www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/ christmas-party-night-at-therock-tickets-71624453669.
“Our first event was a lovely, sociable morning. We opened our doors to seniors who met some of the animals in our care, including some adorable kittens.
The local animal rescue and rehoming centre run by animals charity the SSPCA recently invited pensioners along for its second special coffee morning event, and it now seems set to become a regular happening that more and more local people will want to attend. It’s one thing reading news accounts of all the valuable work the charity does – from finding
new homes for abandoned cats, dogs, rabbits and the rest to campaigning against illegal puppy farming – and quite another to see first hand what goes on at the Milton home. Assistant manager of the centre, Kim Mackrell, said, “We are welcoming mature visitors for a second time to come and meet our team and some of the animals in our care.
“Animals can have positive mental benefits on those around them. They bring so much happiness and from our experience, a lot of laughter. “We’re delighted to be able to offer the opportunity to experience time with animals. “These events are also of huge benefit to the animals in our care to learn socialisation skills and interact with new people. I’m sure they are looking forward to it as much as we are.”

LOCH LONG HOSTS NEW RACE
Late News
A new multi-discipline sporting challenge has been announced for a local loch – and ties in with the Year of Coasts and Waters 2020.
Sunday 1st
The Loch Long Adventure Challenge invites 60 teams of two to compete in an event that includes a 3.5k kayaking section, followed by a 24k off-road cycle and a 5k run. Loch Long Events, which was set up by the charity the Loch Long Jetty Association, also organises the popular Arrochar 10k each September. Now they plan to add the Adventure Challenge on Saturday May 2, 2020, to their race programme. Next year has also been designated Scotland’s Year of Coasts and Waters with a programme of activity designed to inspire people to experience rivers, lochs and the sea.
Dawn Gourlay, secretary of the Loch Long Jetty Association, said: “As part of the bid to raise funds to install a new floating pontoon in Arrochar, which we have now done, we also pledged to organise a water-based event. I thought it would be good to have a triathlon type event, although instead of a swim section there will be a kayak on the loch. “I thought it would appeal to people who are keen to take part in events that are a bit quirky and where better to do a race than on Loch Long. It is such a beautiful location.”
The challenge base will be at Arrochar and competitors will paddle double sit-on kayaks, before heading on to local forest trails for the bike section and then the run. The first wave will start at 10.30am and the second at 12.30pm. There will be two age groups, juniors aged 17 to 19, and adults. There is an early bird entry fee of £106 per team of two (£100 if either or both of the team are members of Triathlon Scotland) until the end of January 2020. There will be a post-race ceilidh. See www.lochlongevents.com and enter at: www.entrycentral. com/Loch_Long_Adventure_ Challenge.

The Mindset Service, operated by West Dunbartonshire Community & Volunteering Services, will look to provide community-based support for adults over 25, across the authority area. Rhona Watson, Service Lead said, “Mindset is a short-term befriending service supporting people living with anxiety and stress, to connect with their community. This service aims to help overcome that by providing the support of a befriender over a 6-month period.”

BOOKS BY TWO LOCAL AUTHORS Books make great Christmas presents, especially if they just happen to be by a talented local author – and here are brief details of a couple of newly-released works ideal as a special stocking filler. Sports journalist Robin ScottElliot has ventured into a magical world of adventure in early 18th century Russia with The Tzar’s Curious Runaways, a story which could have been inspired by some wonderful fairy tale by Pushkin. Set in what was then the recently-built St Petersburg, in the year 1725, the book’s
heroine, Katinka Dashkova, is a superb ballerina, but has to run for her Robin Scott-Elliot life – with friends Alexei the Giant and Nikolai the Dwarf – when Tzar Peter the Great expires, forcing them to flee the Winter Palace and the late ruler’s Circus of Curiosities. Described as a mystical tale with an enthralling blend of history and fiction the story follows the friends intrepid adventure through adversity in a land where witches, wolves and magic are never very far away. The Tzar’s Curious Runaways, can be purchased at Waterstons: www.waterstones.com/ book/the-tzars-curiousrunaways/robin-scottelliot/9781911427131
By sharp contrast there’s “adventure” of a very different kind in Dr Stephen Hearns’ Peak Performance under Pressure: lessons from a helicopter rescue doctor. Drawing on 20 years of leadership experience in high pressure emergency medical and rescue situations, the author describes the consequences of pressure, both positive and negative, and teaches the strategies we need to attain states of peak performance. Using first hand accounts of highpressure situations within emergency medicine, the book covers relevant aspects such as cognitive aids, teamwork, organisational culture and tactical leadership. It will appeal to doctors,

The scheme is used to increase the council’s stock of homes for rent, but previously only applied to owners of former council homes sold through Right to Buy. Now while the majority of homes bought back will still be former council properties, if a specific need arises and cannot be met through existing stock or planned new build, then a private home which meets the criteria can be considered instead. The scheme has a budget of £1,384,000 for 2019/20 and £1,000,000 for 2020/21, which is expected to provide a return of between eight and ten purchases each year. Councillor Caroline McAllister said: “We are working hard to
provide new housing that is the right type and size for the people in our communities who need it. “This has already positively contributed to regenerating these areas, and the extension of the Buy Back scheme will take this a step further. “Sometimes our existing housing stock does not have the type of size of house our tenants require, for example, large family homes. “This extension to the policy means the housing team can look for an alternative solution while still ensuring best value for money.”
