RALLY TIME: The 1960s' Hillman Imp will represent West Dumbartonshire at the world-famous Rally in Monte Carlo

Two local drivers were set to motor across the French Alps in a beautifully-restored 1960s' Hillman Imp and arrive in Monte Carlo, as this issue was preparing to go to press. The venerable vehicle is representing West Dunbartonshire at the classic, world-famous Rally, and will have covered a daunting 1,500 miles crewed by enthusiasts

Scott Fanning and Hugh Liddle. They will have driven the length of the UK and across France before arriving triumphantly at their famous destination, and many local people will have

seen them drive past the West Dunbartonshire checkpoint at Dalmuir on January 31. Museums and culture convener Bailie Denis Agnew, who instigated this event, said: “I am delighted that we’ve been able to work with partners to help Scott and Hugh race and represent West Dunbartonshire in this year’s prestigious Monte Carlo Rally. “I’m committed to bringing new cultural events to West Dunbartonshire and reestablishing our links and profile with Europe and this fi ts that perfectly.” The local effort has been made possible by sponsorship from Imperial Commercials and Parks Motor Group to fully fund the entry of the locally restored 1960s' Hillman Imp.

Drivers Scott and Hugh have dreamed of completing the route for almost ten years, after meeting at an Imp car rally – but never had the cash for the trip, and are now delighted sponsorship has helped to make their dream come true. Scott said: “It is always something Hugh and I would speak about regularly but never thinking we could ever achieve it. “We are grateful to the Council for their support - without their backing there’s no way we could do this on our own.

At the checkpoint, local enthusiasts will have seen up to 20 classic cars stop en-route from Aberdeen to the start event in Paisley later that evening.

“We worked on the car every night and weekend for eight weeks to get it ready for this event and now I can’t wait.” Hugh said: “We always spoke about how good it would be to The Rally was started in 1911 by Prince Albert 1 of Monaco. be part of the rally but it was Cars and crews began at different always just a pipe dream - now it’s a reality”. Palombo makeoVeR This was the scene early last month at hugely popular fish and chip restaurant Palombo’s, where some loyal customers were probably aghast to find their usual port of call suddenly not available. Palombo’s has regularly gained top plaudits in major awards schemes, and could very easily be named best of its kind in the country on any given year- it has come tantalisingly close in recent years. But it also has a phenomenal volume of trade, and as a way of reinvesting in the business the tricky decision was made to fire ahead with an important refurbishment, which to cause least pain for all concerned was carried out during the dog days of January. The heart of the enterprise is of course its cooking facilities, and refurbishment along with maintenance was scheduled

No restaurateur likes to be shut for a minute more than necessary, but the investment in quality will pay future dividends for all concerned. By the time this issue is in print all that sawing and hammering should be just a memory, and Palombo’s – suitably rebranded for another busy lease of life – will be back, even better than before.

Working with all age groups, but with a target demographic being under 30s not involved in employment, education or training, the company delivers services and workshops ranging from motivation and selfconfi dence through to social media, DJ skills and music production, self-employment in the creative industries and live performance skills. SKapade is run by Stephen Kirkwood, an international DJ and Producer, and motivational speaker Steven Galloni.

Whilst some asbestos-related illnesses are serious and incurable most illnesses can be managed by lifestyle changes and should not be viewed as life threatening. Common symptoms of an asbestos-related illness include: l Breathlessness l Fatigue l Persistent cough

l Rapid weight loss l Chest, back and shoulder pain l Fluid on the lungs

If you have been affected by asbestos and diagnosed with one of the following conditions you could be entitled to compensation and government benefits: l Pleural plaques l Pleural thickening l Pleural effusion

l Asbestosis l Lung cancer l Mesothelioma

It doesn’t matter if the company you worked for no longer exists, we can still trace their insurers and make a claim against those responsible for your illness.

Ride the Clyde bike run Local cyclists looking for an exciting challenge are being urged to cross all 17 bridges over the River Clyde from Dalmarnock to Bowling. The Ride the Clyde 30-mile challenge on Sunday, March 25, is being run by the Scottish Huntington’s Association (SHA), the only charity in the country supporting families with the degenerative neurological condition Huntington’s disease (HD). Only 35 cyclists can take part, so if you are interested you’re advised to register as soon as possible. Scottish Huntington’s Association (SHA) is a Scottish charity established by families living with Huntington’s disease (HD) in the late 1980s in response to a lack of HD support services. “We think this is the first time this has ever been done, so it really is a chance for people to take part in something new and achieve something previously never attempted on any scale,” said SHA fundraising manager Dougie Peddie.

“It is open to families as well as serious cyclists and every penny raised will help improve the lives of people living with HD.” Everyone taking part is being asked to raise £99, money that will be used to fund the SHA’s network of HD specialists; a world leading youth support team and its financial wellbeing service. HD is a complex neurological condition with symptoms that typically begin to develop between the ages of 30 and 50. Those affected by HD may eventually lose the ability to walk, talk, eat, drink or make decisions and will eventually need 24 hour care. It is also hereditary with each child of those diagnosed at 50% risk developing the disease,

and there is no cure. It is estimated there are around 1100 people living with HD in Scotland and up to 6,000 potentially at risk. To register contact Dougie on 0141 848 0308 or email dougie. peddie@hdscotland.org

Busy Chamber agenda had its first Business Breakfast of the month, while its senior members have been busy gleaning information of potential use locally at events in Perth and elsewhere.

Dunbartonshire Chamber of Commerce has a packed itinerary this month, but for many local firms the fall-out from the Carillion disaster will probably be top of the list. It still isn’t fully known which jobs will be saved and which lost, following the meltdown of an organisation that was still receiving new government contracts as it headed towards financial oblivion. Caught up in the debacle are

local level is an uphill struggle, perhaps, but the Chamber of Commerce has been doing its best to offer sound advice. It wants any local firm affected to get in touch, and additionally Chamber Member Rennie McInnes LLP may also be able to assist with advice – and can be contacted at philip@ dunbartonshirechamber.co.uk.

Last month the Chamber passed on to its members a survey from West College Scotland, which aims to find exactly what skills local companies are looking for from potential candidates in the local area – and it can be accessed at www.westcollegescotland. ac.uk/skills-survey Still to come this month is a networking event on February 20 at the Carrick Golf Course in Alexandria, and next day a special event at Our Lady and St Patrick’s High School on the theme Developing the Young Workforce. For all of these events and details of how to join, etc, the best initial portal to check out is the Chamber’s Facebook page, where you’ll find there’s an open invitation for all local companies and entrepreneurs to join up and play a full part in the year’s developing programme of activities.

Libraries to change They’re a brilliant but high-maintenance local resource, and this month we’ll find just how the council aim to square the circle of libraries’ cost with convenience for users. A public consultation on how the service should be revamped was wound up last month, and this month an action plan will be submitted to a key committee for approval. What is it likely to contain? One of the main concerns seems to be that the service runs (expensively) at full tilt on nights when hardly anybody wants to use a library – and also on Saturday afternoons, when most folk are shopping, watching football, etc. But it’s not just about cost-cutting we’re told, because a more logical rearrangement of opening hours would also free up a muchneeded £421,000 investment in

The closing date for the 201819 Central Scotland Green Network fund is February 5, with thousands of pounds potentially available for schemes ranging from land restoration to community growing schemes. branches – for improvements which would include sprucing up children’s areas and creating more welcoming help desk services. A new timetable has been drawn up for approval, and this would see all eight local branches staying open and providing a total of 248 hours per week of service. It would also allow key services such as Bookbug, employability sessions and Code Club to continue. Hundreds of people took part in the consultation, so now it’s down to the council to decide if the plan developed from their responses will fit the bill.

February 2018 | What's Up Doc?

bRythoniC bonhill The Celtic place names of Bonhill is the fascinating subject of this month’s Lennox Heritage Society talk, tracing the murky Dark Ages origins of today’s familiar place names. Given by Gwen Jones-Edwards, the lecture contains a few surprises for anyone who may have assumed the past was all about Gaelic language and, later, Scots. Dumbarton, of course, means “stronghold of the Britons”, and refers specifi cally to the ancient British Kingdom of Strathclyde, which was established after the departure of the Romans – and before the arrival in strength of either the Scots or, down south, the early English. Their language was “Brythonic”, which gave us “Strathclyde” – Ystrad Clwyd – and many other names which sound suspiciously like Welsh. In fact the language was protoWelsh, which developed in

What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn

This month: FEMALE INTUITION…?

Wales into the modern Welsh language after the Germanic tribes who would become the English expanded into Cumbria (itself a Brythonic name), leaving Strathclyde as an isolated northern British (not English or Scots) kingdom. Confusing? The fascinating story behind today’s place name etymology will show how incoming Gaels then fused with the “British” names to give us some of the well-known local place names we recognise today. The talk is on February 14 at 7.30pm in Dumbarton’s Concord Centre, and costs just £2 – or pay £10 for a full year’s membership. Details at lennoxheritagesociet. wixsite.com/lennox-heritage-

Research published last month revealed that women are more likely to have their heart attacks misdiagnosed than men.

Fortunately in many of these cases, the women persevered to be listened to and eventually were diagnosed and treated in hospital.

The reasons suggested for this were that they are less likely to have the same “classic” symptoms with which we are all familiar, including central crushing chest pain, pain down the left arm and nausea.

It can be diffi cult to get diagnoses right fi rst time, all the time, and we sometimes rely on people returning to the doctor when things “just don’t feel right” or if symptoms are not settling.

It seems that women, particularly over the age of 60, have more subtle signs, such as shortness of breath, stomach pains, dizziness, jaw pain or mild aches in the chest. Some had been diagnosed with indigestion, panic attacks, muscular pains or toothache.

14 | To advertise call Caroline or Debbie now on 01389 717035

In fact we often refer to “safetynetting” – reminding people to return if things worsen – as a means of reducing clinical risk. So remember not to be afraid to return to your doctor, if your intuition tells you things aren’t right!

Work started last month on 150 high quality affordable homes in Dumbarton town centre, and next month the first of these are scheduled to be finished. It’s part of the dramatic transformation of the site which for many years was occupied by the Ballantine’s distillery, and promises both to breathe new life into the heart of the burgh while also providing dozens of sorely-needed new homes. Dunbritton Housing Association, a key partner in the scheme, already has a solid track record of creating similar developments across West Dunbartonshire and also Argyll and Bute. Dunbritton chairman Sephton MacQuire said: “This development will breathe new life into the town centre, enabling local people to enjoy

living in affordable homes right on the Harbour side.“Phases 1 and 2 will deliver 150 muchneeded quality homes to this area and on behalf of the board of management I’d like to thank all of the partners who have worked together to make this possible. Ryan Fletcher, managing director of developer Cullross, said: “I’m delighted to be here celebrating that the main building contract has been let to Marshall Construction. This is a large and exciting project for everyone involved.

HAPPY neW YeAr It’s worth a short train trip for a chance to celebrate new year all over again – Chinese style. Sunday, February 25 is the date of a special free series of events at the Kelvin Hall, Riverside Museum and Kelvingrove (noon to 4pm), featuring an afternoon of games, dance and play – and those famous Chinese lions – in what promises to be one of the most fun outings of an otherwise still wintry month. Any of these three venues has the makings of a day out at most times of the year, but for this event they’ll also be the staging posts for a cultural event to remember.

Celery has negative calories! It takes more calories to eat a piece of celery than the celery has in it to begin with. It’s the same with apples!

CLever PUPS Dogs are capable of understanding up to 250 words and gestures and have demonstrated the ability to do simple mathematical calculations.

with Gill Bowman BA LLB This month: ALIMENT

When parties separate one of the immediate issues to arise can be the question of fi nancial support. Particularly if one party has been fi nancially reliant upon the other. In Scots law, there is an automatic and reciprocal obligation of aliment between civil partners and spouses. Separately, from a parent to their child, or a child accepted by them as one of their family. It is not commonly realised, but this would apply to step parents. The obligation is a duty to provide such financial support as is reasonable in the circumstances, having regard to the needs and resources, as well as the earning capacities

of the parties and generally all of the circumstances. This allows the court to apply a wide discretion to each case. The obligation of aliment between spouses is extinguished upon divorce, in line with the ‘clean break’ approach. Aliment in relation to children is payable until the age of 18, or if under 25 and reasonably and appropriately undergoing instruction at an educational establishment, or training for employment or a trade, profession or vocation. Although still considered child aliment, anyone fi tting within this category would require to raise the action themselves against the parent.

FMK Flooring was founded 5 years ago by owner Fiona McKeever, who started her business based on two principles – that a customer’s home is their castle, and that when shopping local, customers won’t accept anything less than exceptional customer service. Five years on, and with a strong and ever growing customer base of locals from Helensburgh and the surrounding areas, Fiona is proud to say that she offers exactly that. From their free measuring and estimating service, to their quick and professional fitting service, FMK Flooring makes the entire process of choosing a new floor simple and hassle-free. The shop, based on East Princes Street in Helensburgh, is bursting at the seams with choice for prospective

buyers, with a huge range of quality carpets, rugs, vinyls, laminates and LVT, and their knowledgeable and friendly staff are more than happy to help everyone from first-timers to seasoned homeowners. Too busy to head into town? FMK Flooring also offers a free shop-at-home service, bringing a variety of samples direct to your door for you to consider in the comfort of your own home. To find out more, pop in or call 01436 673600.

Smokers wanted for clinical trial comparing electronic cigarettes with nicotine replacement patches

S

mokers who would like to quit are being sought for a randomised controlled clinical trial in Glasgow. Doctors and scientists funded by the British Heart Foundation (BHF) are looking for 100 healthy volunteers to take part in The VAPOUR Pilot Study. The study aims to investigate the shortterm effects of electronic cigarettes in comparison to nicotine replacement patches on the blood vessels and lungs. Participants enrolled into the study will have an equal chance of being randomly assigned to receive either electronic cigarettes or nicotine replacement patches for 12 weeks. In addition they will all receive

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Smokefree weekly community smoking cessation support sessions in their local area. Participants will be invited to attend two study visits in the Clinical Research Facility at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow. Study tests include blood and urine samples, blood pressure and lung function assessment and non-invasive blood vessel ultrasound. These will be performed before and after 12-weeks of using the assigned nicotine replacement products. James Cant, Director at BHF Scotland, said: “We all know that smoking tobacco raises our risk of suffering from cardiovascular disease.

E-cigs have been hailed by some as a great way to help smokers quit but little is actually known about their impact on our heart and circulatory system, which is why we’re funding this research to help us better understand the effects on our health.” The VAPOUR pilot study is being run by Daniele Kerr who is a vascular surgeon and a BHF-funded Clinical Research Fellow at the University of Glasgow. She explained that: “Every day myself and many other healthcare professionals ask patients to stop smoking. The evidence shows that the public currently choose to use electronic cigarettes as their preferred method to help them stop smoking,

Researchers are seeking 100 volunteers to take part in the Vapour pilot

despite not being currently available on the NHS. This study has been designed to help healthcare professionals answer the question ‘what are the health effects of electronic cigarettes and should I use one to stop smoking?’”

Missing key components of the restored Maid of the Loch paddle steamer have been returned from across the world, following an urgent appeal. Alongside a fundraising campaign, latest phase of which raised £83,000 in just six weeks, the company working to refl oat the famous vessel had declared an “amnesty” – winning publicity at home and abroad – and pieces which went missing when the Maid was derelict have been winging their way back from all over the world. John Beveridge, chairman of the Loch Lomond Steamship

Company, the charity that looks after the former steamer, said: “More than 400 people from around the world have given to the campaign, and our amnesty brought back missing items from as far away as New Zealand. “I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has supported this campaign to help set the Maid sailing on Loch Lomond again!” He added: “We are just a few

The largest donation was a gift worth £25,000 from Graeme Varley who lives in Manchester. He was born in Greenock and spent his early childhood there. As a teenager in the early sixties Graeme used to sail on the Maid - as well as the Clyde steamers - and was inspired to support the campaign because of these happy memories. The farthest donation came from Calgary, in Alberta, Canada - $5,500 CAD was given by members of the Humble family in memory of author, journalist and photographer Ben Humble MBE (1903-1977), who overcame total deafness to become one of the pioneers of Mountain Rescue in Scotland.

RetuRn oF ComiC-Con Still only February, but the area’s impressive diary of must-see events is already off to a flyer with Comic-con returning to Loch Lomond. This was a smash hit last year, even although it’s the sort of fl agship event you normally associate with major venues like the SECC – and it now seems likely this hugely popular extravaganza will be visiting West Dunbartonshire on an annual basis from now on.

the printed word, as games, Cosplay (dressing up as super-heroes) and art will be on display too. “Comics” is an enormous fi eld which covers everything from the evergreen Commando comics many older readers will remember from their youth to the more sophisticated “graphic novels” of the sort which inspired At £2 admission it is not an the fantasy ancient Greek fi lm expensive event to attend, epic “300”. although of course for most people the whole point of going However while many will visit will be to spend some hard the event specifically to seek out hard-to-fi nd Marvel specials there earned cash while they are there will be much more on show than – and with so much to choose

There will be special guests there too, still to be announced, as well as “crafts” and a wide selection of toys, so it easily fi ts the bill of “something for all the family”, and – as per last year- promises to be a great day out.
