gLoBaL supporT for maid Another donation almost £3,000 came from Calgary in Alberta, Canada. The Humble family made the cash gift in memory of author and journalist Ben Humble MBE (1903-1977), who overcame deafness to become a pioneer of Mountain Rescue in Scotland. Ben’s books and countless articles covered every aspect of the Scottish outdoors. Soon after the end of World War II he shared his life long enthusiasm for the Clyde and loch steamers with a popular series of guidebooks which included Sailing Down the Clyde, Sailing up Loch Lomond, Through the Trossachs and The Three Lochs. of
A crowdfunding campaign to help get the Maid of the Loch sailing on Loch Lomond again has inspired an impressive international response. Within fi ve weeks more than half of the target of £125,000 required for a new boiler and installation had been donated. By the closing date of the boiler crowdfunding appeal of December 8 the fi gure was at £84,068. The largest donation of £25,000 came in late November from Graeme Varley from Manchester. He was born in Greenock and
happy memories of being a teenager in the early sixties sailing on the Maid inspired his support of the campaign. He said: “The Maid of the Loch is an important part of our Scottish heritage and I would encourage everyone who cares about this to make a donation, however small, so that once again, she can grace the waters of Loch Lomond.”
Were he alive today, Ben’s family say his voice would be among the loudest in support of our campaign.
The campaign also included an amnesty appeal to fi nd parts from the UK’s last built paddle steamship that went missing after she was left derelict in 1981. Another far-distant response came from New Zealand. John Beveridge, chair of the Loch Lomond Steamship Company, the charity that looks after the Maid, said: “We got a surprise parcel from Alastair Brown, who was the fi rst Purser to work on the Maid. He’s in his eighties now and lives in New Zealand. “Alastair heard about the appeal and has sent us the original clicker used to count the people on and off of the ship. Alastair says that if he can make the trip he wants to come back to Loch Lomond, to act as purser on the first voyage after the Maid is re-launched.” The original build plate – with the name of the shipbuilders and date – was also dropped off to the ship the very day they made the amnesty appeal. It is a ground-breaking move for the people working hard to preserve the heritage and tradition of a regiment which had such a strong presence in West Dunbartonshire over the generations – its soldiers were frequently the shock troops of the British army, particularly in the Great War when the regiment mustered 15 battalions.

sTuB ouT under-18 cigs support to the ďŹ ght to prevent young people from getting hooked on tobacco.â€?
CRACKDOWN: A campaign to stamp out under age smoking has been launched
West Dunbartonshire’s Trading Standards is targeting adults who buy cigarettes for young people by fully backing a campaign which recognises that most under-age smokers get their tobacco from adults. The Not A Favour campaign makes it clear that helping anyone under age to get hold of cigarettes – it’s called “agent purchasing - is helping them into addiction, ill health and fi nancial problems. The campaign has been developed by Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) Scotland, with Scottish Government funding and strong support from Trading Standards representatives. Trading Standards service co-
ordinator, Tony Cairns, said: “West Dunbartonshire Trading Standards has worked over several years with health and education partners, as well as the police, on a number of initiatives designed to ensure that sellers of tobacco meet their legal obligations and our citizens are fully aware of the issues around smoking He added: “We are delighted to participate in this national campaign and lend our further

It is illegal to sell cigarettes to anyone under 18 and research shows that adolescents get addicted to nicotine faster than adults, and so fi nd it harder to escape the health problems and fi nancial costs from smoking. Supporting the launch of the local campaign, corporate services convener Ian Dickson, said: “In Scotland, we’ve made great progress on reducing the number of people who smoke. “However, there are still too many young people taking up the habit. “Adults sometimes buy cigarettes for those who are too young to legally do so themselves and that is something that simply has to stop. The Not A Favour campaign is being supported locally with posters, fl yers and on-street marketing, as well as a social media hashtag of #notafavour Full details on the campaign can be found online at www. ashscotland.org.uk

Some people celebrate the new year by plunging into the icy waters of the Clyde or Forth – while others prefer a less exhilarating (but warmer) approach. This year sees the seventh anniversary of the Balloch Shortbread Run on January 2, an all-inclusive event that isn’t about competing but simply joining in. So while the maximum two mile distance of this healthy hello to 2018 is the ideal you don’t even have to run it, because walkers and joggers are equally welcome. The course route follows the
pleasant scenic pathways around the park, starting at the main gates before proceeding to Balloch Castle and the walled garden – it isn’t a punishment exercise around some bleak running track. Even if you are one of the folk who fancy little more than a healthy stroll it’s a great way to shrug off that “cooped up
Having a chat with like-minded souls is one of the side benefi ts of a now well-established local tradition that doesn’t make any particular demands of people other than to turn up and enjoy an hour or two of others’ company. Organised by West Dunbartonshire Athletics Club, the event starts at 10.30am at the gates on Balloch Road (opposite the bus terminus beside the Co-op), and the course will be marked out with direction signs. There will be a limited number of stewards too, but children under 11 must be accompanied by an adult. At the end of the route the participants gain their due reward, courtesy of sponsor Walkers Shortbread – could there be any more Scottish way of starting the new year?

FLAMINGO LAND: Talks have continued on the leisure park project
Planning consultation events can seem dull, no matter how important the scheme involved, but literally hundreds packed December’s public session in Balloch on the revived Flamingo leisure park project.
The increase in volume of vehicles on the lochside road is one commonly expressed concern, and potential loss of woodland is another. Assuming the scheme does go live within the next few weeks or months we are guaranteed a lengthy and exhaustive planning process, in which many groups will have serious points to make.

The workers’ champion If anyone deserves a statue to their memory in Dumbarton it’s surely the larger than life Robert Bontine Cunninghame Graham (1852 to 1936) – a premier league politician who was also a famous adventurer, journalist and writer. This remarkable man is the subject of the Lennox Heritage Society’s first lecture of 2018, and it promises to be among the most memorable. He came from a military family, and spent much of his childhood in Ardoch, West Dunbartonshire, but his real connection with the area was in his tireless pursuit of justice for ordinary working people ground down by desperate poverty – notably on Clydeside, but across the UK. More like the character from a novel than any conventional political figure, his early exploits
George Bernard Shaw described Graham’s career as “an achievement so fantastic that it would never be believed in a romance.” Quite apart from his immense literary career he became the first ever socialist MP at Westminster, and was both a founder and first president of the Scottish Parliament – after having already served as a Liberal MP - but became a convert to Scottish independence and founded the National Party of Scotland in 1928, then became first president of the Scottish National Party in 1934. Sadly while there was a monument to Graham on Dumbarton’s Castlehill it had to be removed in the 70s because of vandalism – it is sited in a memorial park in Gartmore - and these days he isn’t as included making a fortune as well known in the Burgh as an Argentinean cattle rancher, he arguably deserves to be. prospecting for gold in Spain Heritage Society vice-chairman and (in Texas) becoming a friend Tommy Crockett will be giving the of Buffalo Bill (who famously talk on January 10 (7.30pm in the staged a performance of his Concord Centre, admission just £2 Wild West Circus, complete on the door (or join the Society with real Native Americans, on Dumbarton Common). for £10 a year).

Centenary YEAR FOR war After a long and painful journey through the history of the First World War we’re now in the centenary year of its close – and that’s the cue for what will be one of the most important exhibitions staged locally in recent years. Every town and village in the country was affected in some way, and the communities of west central Scotland, with many men in one of the famous Scottish regiments, paid a terrible price. If you had a relative involved in the Great War – either at home or at the front – West Dunbartonshire’s heritage team want to hear from you.
from that era, this year is arguably the best opportunity to make it public in proper, respectful context. For further information, contact Dumbarton Library Heritage Centre at local. studies@west-dunbarton. gov.uk
They are looking for donations of family items or family stories for a special display which will open in summer and run all the way through to the centenary day of the Armistice which ended the war – November 11.

IT’S ALL HAPPENING AT BEN VIEW
Strathleven Place, Dumbarton G82 1BA, Tel: 01389 733030
Lunch Club A social lunch club for older people operates from Monday to Friday, this service currently has seventy members. The emphasis on the service is the social aspect, we provide a warm, caring and safe environment where people can come together to enjoy the company of others. For many who come along this is the only activity they have outside their own home on a weekly basis.
The members enjoy nothing more than a good blether and time to spend with friends old and new. A two course lunch followed by tea and biscuits is available along with transport to and from the Centre. If you have a family member or know of anyone who would benefit from this service please give us a call.
Over the last six years the Centre has went through an extensive refurbishment programme which has given us top class facilities to offer services to the local community. Have a look at what it is we do. Registered in Scotland Company Number 274651, Scottish Charity Number: SCO24093, Part Funded Through West Dunbartonshire Council
ROOMS FOR HIRE The Centre has four meeting rooms which are hired out to local user groups and organisations. The rooms have recently been modernised and are currently attracting more interest due to the low cost hire which starts from as little as £4 per hour.
For further information on our Lunch club please call and ask for Leona MacLeod our Lunch Club Co-ordinator
Befriending Ben View offers a befriending service to those over 60 within our local community who are experiencing social isolation and / or loneliness and who have full mental capacity. This service will involve regular weekly visits where a volunteer befriender makes visits to our members in their home, perhaps for a cup of tea and a chat, or accompanies them to an activity (such as a trip to a café or the theatre). With befriending each person is matched with a befriender who has similar interests. They will provide friendly conversation and companionship on a regular basis over a long period of time. Befriending provides an older person with a link to the outside world and often acts as a gateway for other services and valuable support. If you know of someone who may benefit from this service then please call and ask for Lorna Wark our befriending Co-ordinator.
The Ben View Childrens Fund The Children’s fund offers welfare grants to children and young people. Ben View does not take applications directly from individuals, this grant can only be applied for through third parties such as social work, health visitors, child care services etc.

For room bookings please contact Claire O’Malley - Administrator.
OFFICE SPACE The Centre has four office bases which are leased to local community / voluntary organisations. At present we have a vacant office and would welcome any enquiries regarding this space. We offer a high standard of accommodation with very competitive prices. The office lease includes access to the Centre’s meetings rooms and facilities.
VOLUNTEERS Volunteering is the gift of a commitment of your time. A volunteer is someone who gives their time and energy for the benefit of the community which is undertaken without financial gain. Volunteers come from all walks of life and volunteer for many different reasons. The support services we offer through our service such as, lunch club, the youth programme and the befriending service all rely on volunteers.

January 2018 | What's Up Doc?
Bridge work is needed If you thought major public works in Dumbarton had all been completed this year, prepare for much more of the same this year and into 2019 – spelling some delays for drivers. Alexandria’s Bank Street was closed for almost two months last year to allow repairs to the railway bridge there, and Dumbarton’s Buchanan Street was also caught up in the wider plan to upgrade key structures across the area. This will be of little consolation to drivers who may find themselves having to set off a bit earlier some days or take alternative routes, but once a strategic railway upgrade plan is in process it has to run its course – so in the very near future there will be a new local railway bridge project in Church Street, Dumbarton, set to cost around £1m.
for drivers – pardon the pun – there is light at the end of the tunnel. Network Rail has stressed the overarching consideration of safety as a main reason for all the local activity, but has added that there’s also a need to prevent such conspicuous structures looking dilapidated and neglected.
What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn
A neighbour is not
This month: just for Christmas! Following the fun and festivities of Christmas we are now starting a new year. Often a time of reflection for future aims and ambitions, many of us set goals for weight loss, breaking bad habits or getting fitter.
Fortunately there are many hidden helpers who look in on neighbours especially over Christmas. Sometimes they may be the first to raise the alarm and arrange help when things go wrong.
Perhaps looking back to the Christmas season should also be included. The spirit of goodwill which sees us behave more like a community and lending a helping hand to those in need could be extended all the year round. As GPs we see patients who suffer from loneliness and neglect due to mental health
The good news is that the grand plan passed its half way mark towards the end of last year, and
problems, addiction, physical frailty and dementia.
It can be easy to get caught up in things and forget to keep in contact. So consider making a New Year resolution to be a good neighbour all the year round and remember, your neighbour doesn’t just have to be the person next door!

skapade’s ‘BesT Year’ we’ve really helped some young people fi nd a direction.
AND THE AWARD GOES TO..: Skapade Studios receive their Social Start-up award from SeĂĄn Batty
The people at Dumbarton’s Skapade recording studios had a great year in 2017 – capped by a Social Start-up Award at a major event in Glasgow – but 2018 promises to be their best year yet. The technical expertise, knowledge of the music industry and a deft understanding of social media have been the building blocks of this remarkable enterprise, but most of the honours have come from a string of community impact awards. People who have learned the ropes with SKapade have increasingly been cutting a dash in the world of music, sometimes going on to further
study with the prestigious Royal Conservatoire in Glasgow. Director Stephen Kirkwood said: “To see our hard work not only be recognised by our peers, but seeing the difference we are making in young people’s lives has been a dream, while manager, Steven Galloni, summing up the achievement, says: “Not only have we been all over Europe with some of the artists who use our studio, but
These two grew up in an area where there was no comparable facility to the enterprise they have steadily developed, and through understanding what people really need, using their own experience, have scored stunning success. The community impact award in West Dunbartonshire and a national Society Award were last year’s big two headline moments, but given the knowledge of the industry and expectations they now have their prediction that 2018 will be even more impressive will probably be borne out in fact. Steven said: “Thanks to all of the funders and partners across Scotland we’ve been able to purchase additional equipment, with more courses planned to help kids out there fi nd their passion. You can fi nd out more about SKapade Studios and the work they do by searching for them on all social media channels – of which Facebook is probably the best option for a day by day update on current activities.

Dumbarton Burns Club is proudly among the hundreds across the world celebrating Burns Night this month, and will be staging it in the Alexandria Masonic Temple on January 26. Every year the club makes charitable contributions to Burns charities and to a charity chosen by the President. The total amount given is always in the region of £1500 At the 2017 AGM the club decided to donate to CHAS, The Robert Burns Memorial Homes and Erskine Hospital. £100 will also go to the Jean Armour Trust for the personal use of the residents in the care home administered by the trust.
This month: PRE-ACTIoN PRoToCoL Pre-Action Protocol is a procedure for Personal Injury claims in Scotland with a value of up to £25,000. It is a compulsory process for claims following accidents that occurred on or after 28th November 2016. In most cases, it must be adhered to before the raising of a court action. It is also important to be aware that it does not apply to clinical/professional negligence or disease claims. The protocol was introduced following the previous voluntary system that was in place from 2006 and is intended to encourage fair, just and timely settlement of cases without having to
progress the action to court. It is also helpful in narrowing the issues in dispute for matters that do not settle and ultimately do end up in court. The claimant must be represented by a solicitor who uses specifi c forms and follows a strict timetable. There are nine steps to the protocol and the court has the power to fi nd expenses against a party for any failure to comply with the steps, unless they have just cause, or has unreasonably refused a settlement offer. A settlement offer should also include a fi gure for the claimant’s expenses, including solicitor fees and outlay.

Local News | January 2018
BowLing aLong in 2018 West Dunbartonshire’s vibrant bowling scene is surely one of the oldest success stories in local club history, when you consider that the thriving Vale of Leven club last year celebrated its 150th anniversary. This particular club is by no means desperate for recruits, but at the same time doesn’t want to turn people down either, and although membership is currently at around the 200 mark there’s no “full up sign on the clubhouse and anyone seeking a highly sociable setting for a very skilful game is welcome to get in touch. It’s off-season now, of course, because bowling comes into its own during the hopefully lazy, hazy days of summer – or, more practically, when it is at least not raining and the greens are in peak condition. Every club has its great experts, but they all had to start somewhere, and some newcomers fi nd they have a natural affi nity with the sport
which they can develop into skilful play with time and practice. The old myth that bowling is exclusively a pursuit for the older gent is complete nonsense, since although the mature members are the most consistently enthusiastic people of all ages are increasingly involved – and it’s not just for men either, as the Vale club has a ladies’ section boasting around 80 members, and a juniors' section too.

Course for cyber-tecs Keep safe Hogmanay tips
Local computer buffs interested in an IT career could be interested in a fascinating new course run by Skills Development Scotland (SDS) – aimed at training “white hat” hackers. We all know about hacking and cyber crime, but less well known is the fact that industry is taking steps to meet the threat by developing a cyber defence force that can counter the villains and keep business (or even vital public resources like hospitals) running smoothly. Gordon McGuiness, Director of Industry and Enterprise Networks at Skills Development Scotland, said: “The cyber industry is of critical importance to our online society and will play an increasing role in the years to come. “There will be a wide variety
of exciting jobs available to today’s youngsters and we need to ensure they have the skills to make the most of these opportunities. “A lot of work has taken place to ensure there are a variety of routes into careers in digital and tech, including new Foundation Apprenticeships which provide real-world industry experience for kids while they are still at sc hool.” For more on Skills Development Scotland and careers visit http:// www.skillsdevelopmentscotland. co.uk/
With the New Year parties both public and private comes some good advice from the Neighbourhood Watch team in our area. First of all they say when you are out try and keep within a group. Keeping with a number of people won’t leave you vulnerable to the types of crimes that are aimed towards individuals and will mean that other people can also keep an eye on you and vice versa.

Always try and share transport with others. Keep in the spotlight – If you cannot stay in a group for whatever reason for the whole night or day always try to stick to public areas so that people Safety in numbers is an old saying are aware of you and don’t walk that means always stick together down unlit areas that can leave and don’t leave any members of you susceptible to danger. your group behind at anytime. LieUtenant hOnOUrs It is wonderful to hear about someone who has received national recognition in the New Year Honours for all the hard work they’ve put in above and beyond the call of duty.
Decluttering is not only a great way to tidy - it can be positively therapeutic. There are a surprising number of websites dedicated to the art.
Good news stories are always enjoyable, and we like to print them in the Community Advertiser. The Lord Lieutenant's offi ce tells us: “We suspect that there are many others in the Dumbarton area who equally deserve such recognition and if you think you’d like to nominate someone within the Dunbartonshire Lieutenancy boundary who you believe deserves public recognition, then one of the first steps to take would be to contact the Clerk of the Lieutenancy by emailing stacy.walker@west-dunbarton. gov.uk, (Telephone 01389 737223) and you will be put in touch with the Lieutenancy Honours and

With that in mind the charity shops are suggesting that it might be a good idea to have a post-Christmas clear out to help fund what is often life saving work. exotic foreign countries, or from times past. The Clydeside club have chosen as this year’s theme an OO-scale rendering of Allander Bank, as a Scottish surburban layout, which on past form will be eerily lifelike – the level of authenticity which goes into the railway engines and rolling stock is matched by astonishingly realistic trackside scenery. For more information about the show, and what will be on display there over those three days, visit www.modelrailscotland.co.uk/exhibition.html . The Clydeside club details are at www.clydesidemrc.com/
Join the team on Saturday, January 13 (7.15am to 9.30am) for an early (as in “really early”) morning woodland walk along to one of their favourite roosting spots. As the sun comes up, watch as the geese move on to their daytime feeding areas. Wear suitable clothing and bring a torch. Some of this event will involve standing for periods of time so remember to wrap up well. For more info phone 01389830670 or email loch. lomond@ rspb.org.uk

Dancers aim for prizes only comes with a great deal of patience, determination and practice.
The next few weeks see the inevitable final belt of training for one of the area’s most prestigious dance competitions - with every imaginable sort of title up for grabs. To be staged at Alexandria Community Centre on Saturday, February 24, the Annual Highland Dancing Competition is the culmination of a great deal of hard work by talented young dancers, and also marks the effective end of the quiet winter season.
Doors open on the day at 9am, with a packed programme to get through ranging from pas de basque to “special fling”, Scotch Measure, swords, and many more besides.
If all Highland Dancing looks broadly similar to the outsider, any of these contestants will be able to tell you it’s all a lot As the first major outing more complex than it looks, and of the year they are keen to show what they can do. that athletic fancy footwork
Join local youth club
Many of the best performers at next month’s event will probably also star at some of the area’s most popular summer outdoors events in years to come. Of course an event as established and thorough as this one is run to extremely tight rules, and the registration process is strictly laid down – it’s not the sort of event where people can decide to “have a go” at the last minute.
If you haven’t yet checked out the youth club meeting in Dumbarton’s Concord Community Centre and are aged ten or more now is a great time to find out more.
However even the youngest dancers will be familiar through their local dance school with the protocols involved in taking part in competitive events, where above all else everything must be fair. For example dancers who have attended classes, workshops or seminars - even if only virtually, by Skype – can’t compete in front of any adjudicator who was holding such a class.
The club meets on Tuesdays from 8pm to 9pm, and runs a wide range of activities – ball games, board games, music, tuck shop and the club have organised special events for fun occasions like Halloween and Christmas, then there’s bowling, bubble football, flipout, laser tag, M&D and every year there’s a special weekend trip too.
There’s more information about dance governing body the Scottish Official Board of Highland Dancing (SOBHD) at www.sobhd.net/events/
