SALUTE TO HEROES OF WW2 Armed Forces Day is about more than “just” the Second World War.
Argylls – famously described by journalist William Howard Russell as a “thin red streak tipped with a line of steel” (later popularised as “the Thin Red Line” ) – stood their ground against a vast horde of enemy cavalry.
In this 75th anniversary year of D Day it would have been odd if that decisive event – the biggest seaborne invasion in history – had not been uppermost in the minds of many taking part in this year’s Dumbarton commemoration parade. Just over three years before the launch of Operation Overlord West Dunbartonshire – at first sight an unlikely focus for the malign attentions of the Third Reich – suffered the Clydebank Blitz. Hundreds were killed even as local servicemen fought overseas in North Africa, Crete and other theatres. No local family was left untouched by the horrors which unfolded between 1939 and 1945. Some of the adult war generation are still with us, but as the veterans’ groups, cadets and Scouts mustered for the recent parade from Dumbarton Health Centre there was an unspoken recognition that this was the last major

Next year the history and heritage of the Argylls, in which countless local men once served, will be told in a new state of the art museum in Stirling Castle. commemoration in which actual participants would be present. Ahead of the event, and the service in Dumbarton’s Riverside Church, Provost William Hendrie said: “The bravery and dedication of the armed forces personnel in our area, both veterans and those currently serving, deserves to be recognised and I am delighted the council is participating in Armed Forces Day.” He went on to perform the salute in company with Commander James Leatherby RN, Deputy

There was another reminder of the role played by people from in and around Dumbarton in the story of Britain’s armed forces when the Balaklava Pipes and Drums led the local parade, because the name hearkens back to a famous battle in the Crimean War in which the

One of the exhibits there, as recounted in a previous issue, will be the famous Balaklava and Lucknow pipes, which have just been restored at considerable cost. Hundreds of pounds were collected towards that restoration by the veterans group based at Dumbarton’s Central Station, in one very salutary example of the continuing importance of those icons of the past in the area’s present. The descendants of these men fought in both world wars, in Korea, in Aden and the rest – a legacy proudly remembered in an Armed Forces Day parade whose core message was surely: “We shall never forget”.

Seasoned veterans of one of Scotland’s premier piping and Highland dancing events will recognise them as key events in one of the most successful crowdpullers of the summer season. July is Highland month in and around Dumbarton and Balloch, when well-known local venues become the focal point of traditional games and gala-style events – but the busiest must be the annual Scottish Pipe Band Championships and Highland Dancing event in Levengrove Park, which typically attracts dozens of bands, scores of competitors and anything up to 20,000 visitors.
had still to be released as this issue was going to press it will probably be a very similar format to previous years’ hugely successful Championships, with free entry and the chance to see and hear the very finest players the country has to offer. It’s a potent reminder that while Dumbarton is geographically in the Lowlands it has always had a solid connection with the West Highlands, in particular, and with age-old Scottish traditions which have seen a brilliant resurgence in recent decades. Part of that is down to enthusiasm
This year’s event is on Saturday, July 27, and although final details
from the wider world, and the realisation that even without major marketing initiatives the area has so much going for it – with easy access to the big city and transport, a brilliant location, and solid support from musicians and performers who train all year in the hope of winning championship glory at this sort of landmark event. Meanwhile spectators can expect a fun day of Highland Dancing competitions, funfair, trader areas with confectionery, jewellery, clothing, toys, Scottish souvenirs and food and drinks – in a Dumbarton spectacular that seems to grow in quality and popularity every year.

CHIVAS WORKERS’ CLEAN-UP Dumbarton’s big whisky employer showed it really does care about the environment with a massive clean-up operation to mark the recent World Oceans Day. Along with environment group Keep Scotland Beautiful and local community groups the Scottish wing of the effort saw Chivas workers remove masses of waste plastics for recycling from rivers and foreshores, on both sides of the border, into a plastic punt that will be used on Scottish waterways to further reduce litter. Dozens of local workers toiled to clean the Dumbarton foreshore, sites along the Leven and also Bowling foreshore.
Armed with litter pickers, yellow tabards and bags almost 700 employees, including the chief executive, from all six Scottish Chivas offices attended clean up events across the country alongside local volunteers. Keep Scotland Beautiful chief executive Derek Robertson said: “I’m delighted that hundreds of Chivas Brothers employees across Scotland got involved. “This is a fantastic example of
a business stepping up to the challenge and supporting its employees to take the vital action needed to tackle littering in the communities where they are based, raising awareness and helping to change behaviours.

“I'd also like to thank our partners at each location, without whom we couldn't have achieved so much.” Jean Christophe Coutures, chief executive and chairman of Chivas Brothers said: “Responsib’All Day is a demonstration of our commitment to having a positive impact on the places we call home and inspire others to take positive action. “Not only are we cleaning rivers, seas and community spaces across Scotland, but by turning that waste into a boat which can be used to clean Scotland’s waterways, we can further futureproof the beautiful home of Scotch”. Chivas Brothers employees donated over 2,100 man-hours for Responsib’All Day, an annual global event which sees 19,000 Pernod Ricard colleagues around the world dedicate time and resources to support the group’s long-term global sustainability commitments.

It’s maybe difficult now to appreciate that one of Scotland’s premier Highland Games events began from fairly humble origins back in the 60’s with an initial outlay of just £500 – but it’s true. Fast forward to 2019 and the annual spectacular at Moss O’Balloch Park is now one of three top Highland Games events in the whole country, and commands a total prize pot of more than £12,000 and – even more important than the prize pot – an immense level of prestige.

SAMH IS CHARITY FAVOURITE National Park staff have chosen mental health charity, SAMH (Scottish Association for Mental Health) as their charity of the year, which will mean a significant funds boost for the organisation over the next year. SAMH provides a range of services across the country and is a lead partner in the national See Me programme, which fights mental health stigma and discrimination.
Last year Park staff raised over £5,000 for Haldane Youth Services by washing cars and selling soup, while providing advice and support with communication and IT services. Park chief executive Gordon Watson said: “Last year we introduced a nine month pilot called ‘Fit for Life’ that allows staff to take part in a 15 minute

West Dunbartonshire Foodshare’s picture of empty shelves appeared along with an appeal last month, and by the time this issue appears many local people will have rallied to help out. For example very recently we’ve seen Dumbarton Harp Social Club staging a football event which asked everyone to give what they could – and many others are joining them in making a difference.
Empty shelves at West Dunbartonshire Foodshare
Summer can be a tough time for hard-pressed families, and meanwhile Foodshare says the simple reason for last month’s empty shelves is “a massive increase in demand”. Of course it is regularly stated that we shouldn’t have to rely on foodbanks to feed people in a modern society, but that is the daily reality faced by many citizens – and it is the community that unfailingly makes the critical difference. In Dumbarton the collection points for donations are at Morrisons, Asda, the council’s Church Street office, Citizens Advice Bureau in High Street and

The event at High Wards Farm, Gartocharn, Alexandria, is certainly one of the more unusual ways to spend a Sunday morning. If you can’t make it this month there’s a repeat performance on Sunday, August 18.

Holiday sessions for local kids begin across the area this month, in a bid to tackle some of the problems which typically crop up during the long school break. The free sessions at the area’s schools – involving a range of fun activities – will also come with free lunches, thanks to a £100,000 council investment designed to alleviate “holiday hunger”. Groups that will benefit include Y Sort-it, Food for Thought, Centre 81, Rise and Shine, Haldane Youth Services and local churches.

In an analysis some will find shocking, West Dunbartonshire Health and Social Care Partnership has found that fully one third of local children are living in poverty, and just over a quarter receive free school meals during term time. This could mean that the end of the school term could potentially
“This £100,000 investment will provide a helping hand to parents and carers with meals and activities provided completely free of charge regardless of circumstances or the number of children participating. “By opening the sessions to all pupils, and incorporating activity sessions, it removes any stigma which could be associated with the provision.” Even for families who do not have to rely on free school meals the holiday period can present significant challenges, once the weeks drag on and the most obvious forms of diversion have been exhausted – and the schools sessions aim to bridge that gap.

TOP AWARD FOR CIRCUITS FIRM West Dunbartonshire company European Circuits Ltd has won the prestigious Business of the Year title at one of the area’s most important awards events. “It's a real credit to the team here at ECL for all their hard work in growing the company.
European Circuits Ltd (which manufactures printed circuit boards) received the honour at this year’s Working4Business Awards, hosted by comedienne Karen Dunbar, in a ceremony attended by around 200 guests. Dunbartonshire Chamber of Commerce chief executive Damon Scott said: “The entries for this category are always really strong, and it was tough to pick the winner from the three excellent finalists that included European Circuits Limited, Bruach Design and Consultancy and JC Electrical & Security Solutions Ltd. “Ultimately. FOOD AND DRINK AT THE SHORES
In past years food and drink festivals at Loch Lomond Shores have proved a major weekend draw, typically featuring key ingredients such as cookery displays by well-known chefs, live music and an array of stalls selling some of the finest produce to be found in Britain. And that could be about to happen again with a new event planned for the weekend of September 7 and 8. The timing is probably good, happening immediately after the main holiday season but before the weather turns seriously chilly – and the organisers promise the event will be “even bigger and better than before”. The Festival runs from 10am to 5pm, and will be by free ticketed entry – more information in due course.

It’s too early to say if this latest effort will add fresh impetus to the campaign to recognise more fully the huge role of West Dunbartonshire in the story of the Wars of Independence – but it will probably give an extra boost to already booming local tourism figures.
Family Cinema Night The Phoenix, Dumbarton 5.30pm. Lego Movie 2. Free. Open from 4.30 for hotdogs, popcorn, drinks and treats. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
The Lennox was the country into which Bruce withdrew when on the defensive, while Cardross and Renton both played a major part in his war-torn career. This was because the Clyde was the super-highway which connected Scotland to Ireland and to the West Highlands, where the hard-pressed Scots won critical support from the Lord of the Isles

– the Bruce galley, permanently moored at his manor in Cardross, was within easy sailing range of key allies the MacDonalds and MacRuaridhs. Should there be a statue to arguably Scotland’s greatest king in the area that gave him succour and which served as perhaps his most important base? Others will have to answer that question – but the continuing interest of the film world will surely keep that possibility a very live issue.

LOCAL TEAM’S GOLF SUCCESS It’s a local golfing highlight of the year, and this time the contest – now 33 years old – saw a talented player from East Renfrewshire take the professionals’ prize. Gavin Hay from Mearns Castle Golf Academy won the honour at West Dunbartonshire’s Provost Pro-Am tournament with a score of five under par. Meanwhile the winning team title went to council colleagues James Docherty, Dany Cavan, Kai Pavlik and their designated pro Christopher Kelly, of Scotland for Golf. The event was staged recently in drizzly but tolerable conditions. Amateur awards at the event, staged recently at Dalmuir Golf Club, were also presented to Gary Murphy for being Nearest the Pin, Alan Crawford for the Longest
Drive and Paul Kelly for being Nearest the Line. Provost William Hendrie said: "I would like to thank all of the professionals who took part and made the 2019 competition a great success. “It's also important to recognise the team behind the scenes who deserve immense credit for their continuing efforts to successfully deliver the Pro-am. “I would also like to thank our partners the Scottish Professional Golfers Association for their support once again and we look forward to many more editions of the West Dunbartonshire Pro-Am.”

ever-present promise of glorious sunshine if you’re an optimist. The month starts in fine form with the first of two superb Highland Games events when the annual gathering of Clan Colquhoun takes place in Luss – an event first staged back in 1875, when enthusiasm for all things traditional and Scottish reached new heights during the glory days of the British Empire under Queen Victoria.
In some ways little has changed since those far-off times, because the Luss Games lay heavy store on tradition and heritage, but in others rest assured it’s a thoroughly 21st century family fun day which also features a packed programme of thrilling sports events, from running to solo piping. This year’s event is on Saturday, July 6, and as ever will be a superb spectacle packed with entertainment and supported by committed local community groups, local farmers and, of course, sports enthusiasts of many different kinds. The Clan element ensures a steady stream of visitors from across the world, never more so than now when enthusiasm for this most Scottish of skills contests is every bit as exuberant as

CHAMBER PLEDGES SUPPORT FOR DUMBARTON EAST BUSINESSES The Dunbartonshire Chamber of Commerce has pledged its support for businesses affected by the closures of Glasgow Road in Dumbarton East. The business support organisation attended a meeting with West Dunbartonshire Council and FSB this week to look at ways to help businesses impacted by the works to replace old metal gas mains being carried out by SGN. Damon Scott, Chief Executive, Dunbartonshire Chamber of Commerce, said: “The disruption these essential works have resulted in has inevitably affected the ability of many local businesses to trade normally. It is important that businesses have the support to help them through this difficult period to maximise the opportunities to drive trade and to ensure they are provided with guidance about what they can do about any loss of earnings.

Explore Scotland | July 2019 Top of any list must be the freebies, especially if the holiday money cache is looking a bit depleted. This summer, you'll be able to see a major retrospective of photography by Linda McCartney shown in the UK for the first time at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum from 5th July. The Lighthouse, AKA Scotland’s Centre for Design and Architecture,
is a bit of a hidden gem. It’s tucked away down a side street. Climb the incredible spiral staircase for panoramic views of the city. There’s also the Gallery of Modern Art, The Riverside Museum of Transport and Travel, Botanic Gardens and Kibble Palace. Mugdock Country Park, Glasgow Cathedral and the Necropolis, the People's Palace and the Hunterian Museum – all no cost options. A quick check around your own community and local council websites will also reveal a wealth of local events and things to do.

This month: SAFEGUARDED I thought I would continue the theme from the last couple of instalments and explain the role of a safeguarded within the Children’s referral system. Panel members have a duty to consider appointing a safeguarded under S.30 of the Children’s Hearing (Scotland) Act 2011.
Preston is a third generation plumber of the family firm, with over 40 years’ experience in the plumbing and heating industry. He has been a strong supporter of the SNIPEF Glasgow & West of Scotland Local Association, serving as both Director and local President. He served as SNIPEF National President in 2011 and was instrumental in setting up the Plumbing Industry Licensing Scheme in 2002. SNIPEF CEO Fiona Hodgson said: “I was very proud to present Preston with the SNIPEF Merit Award. He is an extremely deserving recipient who has made an enormous contribution to the industry, and continues to do so. His passion for the industry is evident, as is his dedication and commitment to sharing

Their role is to ensure that the child’s interests are being looked after by making their own enquiries and reporting anything to the panel that they think is relevant and should be taken into consideration. The paramount consideration when making any decision is whether it is necessary to safeguard and promote the welfare of the child and the particular test to be applied here is simply whether a person
is required to safeguard the interests of the child. This is a very broad test and so long as the panel provide a reason for their decision it can cover any number of scenarios. A common reason for a safeguarder appointment is often conflict between the local authority, being the social work department, and the parents. The panel may also feel they need further information in order to make a decision. The safeguarder would speak to the relevant child and all relevant persons, usually parents, as well as any person they think may hold significant information, such as school or health visitor. Their findings and own recommendations are then reported back with a view to assisting the panel to make a substantive decision.

MSP ‘CALLS IN’ BALLOCH PLAN As the row over the Flamingo Land/Scottish Enterprise plan continues to gather pace local MSP Jackie Baillie has made a straight appeal for the scheme to be “called in” by the Scottish Government.

She said: “A number of concerns have been raised about the Lomond Banks development locally; from the quality of jobs which the developers say will be created, to the impact on existing business, transport infrastructure and even the local environment.” Jackie added: “Scottish Enterprise purchased the land for £2million about 20 years ago – they are
now telling the public that it is worth just £200,000 which is the price that Flamingoland will pay. “Indeed Flamingoland are likely to receive additional public funds in grants from Scottish Enterprise so we may end up paying them to develop in Balloch. “Many people remain unconvinced that this is a good use of public money”. “It is also the case that this
is a substantial and complex application and I believe, given the involvement of Scottish Enterprise, that the application should be called in for determination by the Scottish Government.” As against these claims some argue jobs and income from increased tourism make the scheme worthwhile – the debate has a long way to run.

THE PUBLIC DELIVERS VERDICT
THE RISE OF THE ICE LOLLIES
The public consultation has newly closed on whether or not an enormous amount of cash should be ploughed into an ambitious plan to transform Dumbarton’s Glencairn House into a state of the art new library, museum and community hub – and we can’t wait to hear what people think.
The popular summer treat was accidentally invented by an 11-yearold boy in San Francisco in 1905. He left a glass of soda sitting outside and by the next morning the soda had frozen. He began selling them at an amusement park in New Jersey.
hacks A PINCH OF DEHYDRATION Stay hydrated during the summer using your pointer finger and thumb, simple pinch the skin on the back of your hand and hold for a few seconds. If the skin takes a while to return to its normal position when you let go you could be dehydrated.
on whether to give the green light to this bold attempt to bring something new and of genuine importance to the town centre.
Dumbarton’s Glencairn House
Some inevitably worry about the level of funding likely to make it all happen, but many would argue that something seismic is needed to give the Burgh the sort of resources needed to breathe new life into a town wracked by the ravages of austerity, and threatened with further fall-out from the economic consequences of the Brexit fiasco. On a purely practical note, it
will create a home for many wonderful objects of national, never mind local, interest, while allowing the existing library to be rebooted as the home for a public archive, but if all goes to plan the effects could be far more widereaching. The consultation was wellpublicised and every view – for or against – will be reviewed before any final decision is made
It is one strand of an evolving series of moves many would argue are needed to repoint the Burgh’s fortunes – ranging from ways of making the iconic Rock more accessible and interesting to tourists to the current attempt to bring about a radical improvement of the decrepit exterior of Dumbarton’s Central Station, literally the first thing many visitors see on arrival. The Glencairn project could play a decisive role in this evolving commitment and renewal, while securing the future of Dumbarton’s oldest building – but, naturally, at a cost commensurate with the scope of the project under review. We’ll have more on this could-be landmark project in future issues.

COMMUNICATION STRATEGIES FOR PEOPLE LIVING WITH DEMENTIA
Communication Is vital to our well-being. People living with Dementia slowly may lose their language skills and their ensuing quality of life. As family and as friends, understand how you can communicate better with your loved ones. • Realise your Challenge: Be prepared, your loved one will get worse over time and communication will become more difficult. • Be Patient: Communication is effectively one of the greatest challenges seniors with dementia face – tolerate delays compassionately. • Offer Reassurance: Listen attentively and empathise even if they are delusional, confused, hesitating or angry. • Minimize background noise: With dementia, this can be disturbing and confusing.
• Avoid arguing: Use simple sentences, clear warm tones, do not contradict and do not speak to them as you would to a child. • Use Nonverbal Cues: Gestures, touch and facial expressions can assist communication. • Keep it Simple: Two or three threads of conversation may be a lot to handle. • Be Sensitive: Don’t talk about them as if they are not there. • Take a break: Dealing with Dementia can be challenging, frustrating and lonely. Seek advice and support – this will only help you and your loved one.

GETTING READY PROF WAS STAR HEADLINE ACT writers group which meets at Balloch House FOR GO SWIM The Hotel welcomed special guest Alan Riach.
“At the end we felt Alan could easily have gone on and we would have been happy if he had. “When an evening goes this well it’s often harder to review because there’s nothing to criticise. People, including me, tend to feel nothing’s that good.
Lomond Shores has teamed up with the National Park to launch this brand new open water swimming event, aimed at all ages and experience levels, to be staged on Saturday, September 7. There will be events for all ages and standards of swimmers, including the family friendly 250 metre option for those aged 8 and over (accompanied by an adult) and 750 metre and 1500 metre options for those just starting out in open water swimming. For experienced swimmers there are 3000 metre, 5000 metre and 10,000 metre options. “However this one was and that memory will be the one that stays with us.
Special guest Alan Riach
The Professor of Scottish Literature at the University of Glasgow, for their most recent session – and he soon proved a very popular guest headliner. The group’s George Gibson tells us: “Alan presented us with a compelling autobiographical series of intimate anecdotes and writings from his books Homecoming and The Winter Book. “While he was looking through his books for the poem he wanted to read, he filled the moment’s pause by giving us one of the
outstanding stories of the evening, about Norman MacCaig attending a poetry reading, where the great Gaelic poet Sorley MacLean was taking a few minutes to leaf through his notes to find the poem he wanted to read, and MacCaig was heard remarking loud and clear, ‘I came here to listen to you read your poems, Sam, but I didn’t think it was going to be silently to yourself’. “Such anecdotes brought an extra dimension of gentle humour to the evening.
“While we were leaving I said to Alan that he would be welcome to come back. He replied that he would be glad to. It was a memorable evening for everyone. Watch this space.” The group’s next open mic evening is July 1, when the headliner will be Samina Chaudhry, recipient of this year’s New Chapter Award awarded by the Scottish Book Trust. Born in the north of England, Samina moved to Pakistan as a child, then after completing her education to Master’s level she came to Scotland in 1999. She has had many short stories and poems published and is presently working on a novella.

Maid of the Loch supporter Sheila McLaughlin has donated two of the vessel’s original bench seats to the under-restoration steamer, originally gifted by her late father Charles (Charlie) Donnachie. Charlie started work in the mid 1940’s for Clyde Steamers operated by LMS, who had a base at the Prince’s Pier in Greenock. When the Maid came into service in 1953 she was served by the same team, and Charlie often made the journey to Loch Lomond to carry out repairs. The benches will now be restored, and fitted with plaques in memory of Sheila’s dad.

RUN THE BLADES
CHAMBER LAUNCHES “NETWALKING” PROGRAMME An innovative new way of networking has been introduced for the benefit of the business community in Dunbartonshire. Dunbartonshire Chamber of Commerce this week launched “Netwalking the Chamber” with the first of the events that combines Networking and Walking.
This month sees a series of trail running races at Whitelee Wind Farm, near Eaglesham. On Friday July 19 at 7.30pm there is a 10k race, then on Saturday July 20, participants can take part in a half marathon (13.1 miles) or a 50k ultra distance race. Runners will enjoy the traffic-free environment and experience a unique opportunity to race beneath the towering wind turbines. There will be route signage, marshals, a race medal, a t-shirt and a goody bag for runners. There are limited spaces for these races so check out the website www.breakingstrain.co.uk/runthe-blades as soon as you can.
The events are designed to get businesspeople away from the office to connect with their peers in the great outdoors without other distractions.

To find out more about Netwalking events or about the many other benefits of Chamber membership visit www.dunbartonshirechamber.co.uk.
The Chamber has teamed up with Chamber member, Nick Smith of Squarepegs Coaching – an outdoor coaching business, to put the events together. A broad theme is introduced to encourage conversation between netwalkers and to prompt them to explore some challenges, opportunities and strategies relating to their individual businesses. Damon Scott, Chief Executive, Dunbartonshire Chamber of Commerce, was encouraged by the response to the first event which took in a walk along the Forth and Clyde Canal from Clydebank: “We were delighted
