Ms groUP is Flying high of the National Park. Having a charity of the year is one way for our staff to come together and give back.
A hard-working Dumbarton organisation which helps Multiple Scleroris (MS) sufferers has been chosen as the charity of the year for 2017/18 by staff at Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park.
“It’s voted for by them and they always throw themselves into their fundraising efforts. “I’m delighted that we will be supporting the Dumbarton and District MS Group and look forward to seeing what inventive ideas everyone comes up with to raise funds.”
Dumbarton and District MS Group has been providing support to the MS community since 1970, raising awareness, fundraising and organising outings and events for people with MS in the local community. The charity of the year status will mean a signifi cant funds boost for the Group – last year National Park staff raised nearly £5,000 for three local Mountain Rescue Teams from activities which included staff taking part in the Great Scottish Swim, a marathon, a quiz, cake bakes, tea and toast mornings and a very popular tuck shop.
Meanwhile this month the group are offering local residents the chance to take to the skies in a daredevil skydive – which involves free-falling for 30 seconds at a speed of 120mph! to get out of their home for a full The event is on June 24 and 25 afternoon once every two weeks. at Glenrothes airport in Fife, and there’s both a registration fee of The group also has a lunch club £49 and a minimum sponsorship every four weeks at Ingliston of £450. East Loch Lomond Community Trust is landscaping the former derelict village toilet block site with attractive boundary stone walling, paths and seating areas to create a focal point in the heart of Balmaha. They also have plans to install three storyboards featuring the nearby Highland Fault Boundary and Loch Lomond.
The grant from the Friends of OUR park visitor giving scheme will help fund some landscaping work and the new storyboards which are designed to complement the adjacent Tom Weir’s Rest site that has been transformed in recent years. John Urquhart, Vice-Chairman of Friends of Loch Lomond and The Trossachs, said: “We are delighted
Joe Twaddle, of East Loch Lomond Community Trust, said: “Funding from sources like the Friends is essential to projects like ours and we very much appreciate their help and support. “Balmaha is growing in popularity and it is important we improve the public realm to present the village in the best way possible and keep it attractive. “As well as the Friends, we wish to thank the thousands of visitors who have supported the Friends of OUR park visitor giving scheme and the participating businesses, without whose efforts and generosity the funding would not have been available.

a Marathon For st Pat’s Canon Conroy at St Patrick’s Church in Dumbarton has taken to social media in a bid to galvanise support for the effort to raise cash for badly-needed repairs to the hall.
Mr Connolly says he wants to make the effort “particularly given that the hall is used for a number of community events, and the local school children often use it for a range of activities.

He’s got a family interest many local parents will appreciate, as among those to gain will be the children at St Patrick’s Primary School – where his daughter Robyn is a pupil.
It’s the latest example of a clergyman using a medium most of us use for casual chat to get over a serious message about something that concerns a considerable local community – because all sorts of people rely on the facilities of the church hall, while the church itself is an important feature in many local lives.

He said: “Strathearn is a very challenging marathon as the route includes an ascent of 1,500 feet in the Perthshire hills. Please show your support!â€? When we last checked the have-a-go dad was almost half way towards his original ÂŁ1,000 target – but it would also be a nice return for his spirited effort if the fund gained even more.
He’s asked everyone with an interest to share his message on Facebook, and hopes that by gaining community goodwill the fabric fund will benefi t.
Meanwhile it’s surely very likely many wellwishers may conclude that his example is a brilliant one to follow.
Canon Conroy’s appeal has already won the strong support of local man John Paul Connolly, who is running the Strathearn Marathon on Sunday, June 11, in an ambitious bid to boost the church’s resources.

IT’S BBQ TIME
The Rotary Club of Dumbarton doesn’t do things by halves when it comes to raising money for a worthy cause – as one recent event amply proves. Members raised the magnifi cent sum of more than £11,000 from a highly successful dinner, and later agreed that the cash should be distributed among a number of charities. One in particular, Alzheimer Scotland, has a particular resonance with many families who have a loved one diagnosed with the complex disease that now affects so many people – often, but not exclusively, older people.
Of all the many charities which deserve public support Rotary are surely right in regarding Alzheimer as one needing regular and fulsome help. Alzheimer Scotland’s efforts have touched many lives, in a way which the regular health service arguably can’t, adding an extra dimension of care to the treatment of a condition which is still widely misunderstood.

A new drop-in café supporting stroke sufferers, their family and carers meets on the last Wednesday of every month
A new stroke support drop-in café in West Dunbartonshire is calling on anyone who has had a stroke and their carers or family members to come along, meet others and find out more about stroke. It is worth going along to if you want more information about stroke – there’s a range of publications that will help answer your questions around many aspects of stroke. The organisers will also show you how to use My Stroke Guide, a website including videos, animations and an opportunity to set goals for your own recovery.
As well as meeting others who attend group meetings, you can join My Stroke Guide’s Community Forum which will put you in touch with other stroke survivors who you can share experiences with. This is what members who go along have said of the scheme: “It gives me an opportunity to talk to people who have also had a stroke

Stephen Quinn, Marketing Manager for Fenton's Bar said after last year’s effort: “We're very happy and pleased to be able to handover this cheque to CHAS as I know it will benefit children and their families who need the expert support and

Father’s 50 great years
Late News
A scroll presented to Father Mills during a special presentation ceremony reads: “In recognition of his 50 years of distinguished service as a Parish Priest within the Archdiocese of Glasgow, as an Assistant Priest in Dumbarton and in particular the last two decades at St. Mary’s RC Church in Duntocher; for his commitment to and participation in the education of children in his role as Chaplain of St Patrick’s High School in Dumbarton and as Chairman of the Chaplain’s Association, in appreciation of his significant contribution to the social wellbeing of the people of this area; for his compassion, love, understanding, kindness, humour and overall positive influence he has had on the lives of not only his parishioners but on the whole spectrum of society throughout West Dunbartonshire.”
A former chaplain at Dumbarton’s St Patrick’s High School has been made a Freeman of West Dunbartonshire in recognition of his five decades of religious endeavour.

This month: DR GOOGLE...
A live replay of history
More than 100 performers will take their audience on what amounts to an epic romp through the fascinating stories of the Romans, the Vikings, the Stuarts and many others. This grand history pageant also includes a chance to find out how swords and bows were made back in the days when weapons were as common – and as necessary – as umbrellas are today. The colourful and engaging narrative continues through the First World War into living memory, showing how Scotland developed through the many sweeping changes that came with the cataclysmic events of the 20th century. On a less warlike note there will also be a chance to learn how local cultural traditions evolved over the years – and to find out how Dumbarton’s
iconic Rock and its castle has been maintained. Run by Historic Environment Scotland, “The Rock of Ages” event is run to the same high standard as other mainstream summer events at key heritage locations including Edinburgh, Stirling and Linlithgow. The event runs from noon to 4pm on the weekend of June 10 and11, and there’s a discount if you book online, with a family ticket also an option. You can find booking details at www.historicenvironment. scot/visit-a-place/whats-on/ event/?eventId=b622b3a3-fa6f44e0-8f01-a5b500f8cd0a

I know I shouldn't doctor, but..." is often what I hear prior to patients admitting they have looked online about their condition or medications. Often "Dr Google" is blamed for causing people unnecessary worry or giving misleading information about health. There may be a mixed message though, as doctors are keen for people to take responsibility for their health and "own" their conditions. Our job is to diagnose, inform and enable patients to make the decision which is right for them, where possible allowing them to weigh up their options. I like to think that the days of the
finger-wagging doctor telling the patient what they must do have moved to more "adult" conversations! The internet can be a valuable help with this, and I will often print off downloaded information sheets for patients or suggest they look at a website to help them better understand what is happening with their bodies. However, in these days of "fake news" selective use of reliable websites is key. Use www.nhsinform.scot as your first port of call and when you have real concerns remember you can discuss these with your doctor!

1 Make your morning brew with certifi ed organic coffee or tea. The organic label means it was grown using sustainable standards. 2 Spread used coffee grounds on beds of acrid-craving plants, such as azaleas. 3 If you are away from your computer for more than 20 minutes, put it into sleep mode.
World Environment Day takes place this month and aims to raise awareness of how to take positive action to protect nature and our Earth. The global campaign, on June 5, is run by the United Nations Environment Programme and calls for people to be more caring by making environmentally responsible choices. Here we suggest 10 small things to do that could make a difference to your environmental impact.
4 Take you own bags to the supermarket. You have to pay for plastic bags in Scotland anyway so you will be green and save money, too. 5 Take a closer look at your home recycling. Is there anything you miss out regularly or could re-use? Plastic and glass items should be a focus. 6 Save water by turning off the tap while brushing your teeth or shaving and take a shower instead of a bath. 7 Stick to the speed limit in your car. Driving over the national speed limit is both illegal and a drain on fuel. 8 Check your car tyres are pumped up to the right pressure. Driving on soft tyres uses more fuel. 9 Switch your lighting to energy effi cient bulbs and install dimmer switches. 10 Use a microfi bre cloth in the kitchen instead of roll after roll of kitchen paper. If you do one of these things on World Environment Day, how about a few more over the month?

West Dunbartonshire trading standards officers are asking for the public’s help to identify grocery shops which may not be correctly displaying the prices of goods. During inspections it was found that in a signifi cant number of shops basic everyday items like bread, milk and fresh produce, were not priced – and that means some shoppers may unwittingly be paying too much. Pricing information must be clearly legible and displayed on or near the goods. Trading standards service coordinator Tony Cairns said: “We were a bit concerned about pricing compliance for local grocery shopping, and for that reason we undertook a series of inspections. “If customers do not know the price before they buy they can be
put at a real disadvantage and may be charged over the odds. “Failure to display the prices is not only inconvenient for the consumer it can also be a criminal offence.” “By acting as our eyes and ears, local shoppers can help us protect them and ensure they get a fair deal. Shops who ignore our advice risk being reported to the Procurator Fiscal.” Trading standards can be contacted by calling advice partner the Citizens Advice consumer helpline on 03454 040506 or online at www.west-dunbarton.gov.uk/ consumer-advice

Due to customer support and savvy shoppers snapping up bargains, an unseasonal stock appeal has been launched by an Alexandria charity shop. Barnardo’s Scotland’s stores in Dunbartonshire are running low on stock and the shops are in need of donations of children’s toys and women’s clothes - especially dresses and tops. William Farrell, Area Business Manager for Barnardo’s Scotland’s shops in Dunbartonshire said: “Managers in a few areas are reporting that they are running a bit low on stock, unusual this early into the season.” The shop is open 9 to 5, weekdays, and 11 to 5 on Sundays.

This month: STOP AND SEARCH The act of being stopped and searched by a police constable is a significant intrusion of anyone's personal liberty and privacy. Accordingly, a new code of conduct regulating the practice was published in January 2017. Essentially, it removes the ability for a stop and search to be carried out unless there is a statutory reason for it, even if the individual gives their consent to be searched. It also clearly sets out the guidelines for Police Scotland and makes them more accessible to the general public. They can be found online or in your local police station. Statutory powers allow a stop and
search to be carried out on a person, not already in police custody, when a constable has a reasonable suspicion they are committing, have committed or are about to commit a particular crime or are in possession of a prohibited item. The legal test, and therefore the important part, is the reasonable suspicion. The suspicion must firstly be genuine and secondly reasonable, i.e. would another reasonable person consider that there was a crime or prohibited item? In the event you are ever stopped and searched you should be provided with a receipt detailing your right to a copy of the record of the search.

Grab a Great mortGaGe deal Although the long term impact of Brexit and the recent elections result in the United States on future mortgate interest rates is uncertain, action can be taken now to fix your repayments. Borrowers with fixed rate mortgages ending as far away as July 2017 could consider getting hold of a new deal now before these low rates potentially disappear.
Next to purchasing your home, choosing the right mortgage is probably one of the most important decisions you will make when you are looking for a new deal.
Since the Bank of England lowered the base rate to 0.25 per cent, there have been a number of new two year fixed deals appearing on the market at interest rates never seen before.
Making the wrong choice about your mortgage can result in you having to pay hundreds if not thousands of pounds more than you need to pay.
Although these two year deals may seem attractive and could suit some borrowers, they may not be the best choice for those people whose fixed rate deal ends while the UK may be experiencing potentially difficult times going through the process of leaving the EU.
For further information on how you could potentially save money each month on your mortgage and secure your future repayments, call The Mortgage Advice Service on 0800 011 2827 or logon to www.themortgageadvice service.co.uk

A spokeswoman for the SSPCA said: “We don’t receive any government or lottery funding, so we really do rely on kind volunteers to be able to continue our work and anyone who gets involved will be helping save lives. “We'll give you everything you need to take part along with some goodies and promotional materials to encourage donations."
The SSPCA are looking for fundraising volunteers for their Pets at Home branch at St James Retail Park over two weekends in June
Fun, fast, exhilarating – and team-building – there’s surely few more fun ways of helping a worthy cause than taking part in a dragon boat session on Loch Lomond.
If you can spare an hour or so register at www.scottishspca.org/ events/event-form/?event=Pets+at +Home+Spring+Fundraising+Drive.
The cause to benefi t is cerebral palsy therapy, and the dramatic and boat shenanigans are a great way of raising the profi le and spreading information about all the valuable work that is being carried out. It’s not cheap to enter, but with a committed team (offi ce volunteers?) and good sponsorship your entry can genuinely make a difference.
Once you have registered the SSPCA will send you everything you need to take part, along further details about events taking place in store and an easy step guide to raising funds.
It’s on Saturday, June 3 at Balloch Country Park, and you’ll get full details at www.bobathscotland.org.uk/ article/news/ dragon-boats-get-involved

Time to get in the saddle
TO LET Beechwood Estate
Alexandria
Scots of all ages and fitness levels are being encouraged to get on their bikes this month as the annual Bike Week campaign takes place. Bike Week, from June 10 to 18, is the opportunity to promote cycling – and to show how cycling can easily be part of everyday life by calling for “everyday cycling for everyone”.
This year’s Bike Week has a special focus to get people to use their bikes to cycle to work. Whether you aim to cycle all the way to work each day or a few times a week, or you use your car and your bike in combination to get to work, you’ll find there are benefits to your fitness, as well as saving money. A Bike Week spokesperson said: “The aim of Bike Week is to
demonstrate the social, health and environmental benefits of cycling. We want to get many more people cycling, whether it’s for fun, to get to work or school or to the shops.” Local residents can take part in Bike Week simply by pledging to ride their bikes more. If you are a keen cyclist already you could organise a led ride to encourage others to cycle as well. See www.bikeweek.org.uk

GENERAL BUILDERS
The idea of launching a Friday coffee morning at Dumbarton’s Lennox Evangelical Church seemed worth pursuing back in the distant days of the late 90’s – and proved an enormous success. In fact, with zero publicity, it’s become nothing less than a cornerstone of local community life – and is a great way to meet friends. But while it might seem a long time ago now, the 21 years since the venture was first launched by volunteers Jack and Eleanor Galloway have simply flown by for popular helper Christine Ferguson – who has finally, and
BUILDERS
no doubt with some regrets, decided to hang up her apron. Some of the volunteers and regulars recently marked the occasion with a presentation to local girl Christine, seen in the centre of the photo with her sister Mary. Sheena Buchan, organiser of the Friday Coffee Mornings explained that the work relies on volunteers
Jack explained that the coffee and home baking was freely provided, and local people have also been generous over the years in giving donations which have been passed on to several local charities. Another unique feature of the coffee morning is the popular “thought for the day”, a five minute Bible based reflection given by one of the volunteers. The Friday Coffee Mornings are still on – even although Christine won’t be doing the honours from now on – and open to all from 10am till 12 noon at Lennox Evangelical Church, Risk Street, Dumbarton.

The Whangie (by Queen’s View, heading towards East Dunbartonshire territory) is a bizarre natural rock feature much beloved of sightseers and practice rock climbers – the result, legend has it, of a glancing blow from Auld Nick’s tale as he sped towards Loch Lomond (some time ago). It’s just one of the walks coming up for Helensburgh and Dunbartonshire Ramblers (Saturday, June 24), in what is a highly varied and carefully devised calendar – the Union Canal from historic Linlithgow to Falkirk is another potentially fascinating outing. The Oak Tree Inn at Balmaha has been recognised for fundraising work which has collected no less than £14,000 through donations from guests. These funds go towards supporting a range of heritage, conservation, access and public safety projects throughout the National Park for the benefit of visitors and residents’ enjoyment of the area’s number one amenity. Children’s play areas at Balloch and Luss, the roll-out of public access defibrillators and improvements to lochside paths have all received an important boost from the Friends of OUR park visitor giving scheme.

Dr Goel, a retired consultant paediatrician wrote the book, Great Scots, because few people could name even 10 famous Scots. This month: CARERS WEEK National Carers Week 2017 takes place from June 12th to 18th. Carers Week is an annual campaign to raise awareness of caring, highlight the challenges carers face and recognise the contribution they make to families and communities throughout the UK. Looking after each other is something that we humans are good at. It’s in our nature to care for and nurture those who need it. There are currently around 6.5 million people throughout the UK who provide unpaid care for frail, ill, or disabled family members or friends. Many of these carers may
not know that they are classed as carers, perhaps thinking that they’re just being a good family member, friend, or neighbour, when in fact they are much more than that. Carers Week aims to increase awareness of the valuable job that all carers perform each day, whilst also finding ways to make the life of a carer a little easier. When the whole community is involved, carers can feel confident that they have somewhere to turn for help and respite when they need it the most.
