GREAT WAY TO START JUNE It’s hard to believe the popular Vale 10k is 32 years old this year – and every bit as popular now as when the event was first launched by Polaroid Eyewear all those years ago. It is a very “local” event in one sense, but equally attracts many runners from further afield – drawn both by the reputation of the event and its superb location at Moss o’Balloch, and its route along the River Leven.

It’s also the unofficial launch of summer, and with it a packed programme of activities which draws thousands to the bonny banks during those precious weeks when West Dunbartonshire is at its scenic finest.

The June 2 race aims to deliver a high quality, safe and wellorganised running experience that participants of all ages and abilities can enjoy. Its scenic route takes entrants through Balloch Castle Country Park, with its unforgettable lochside setting, and among the many other summer running events is arguably the most attractive.

Not content with running beside the loch, many increasingly look forward to another major event that rounds off all that strenuous athletic summer activity – the Great Scottish Swim in August. Like the Vale 10k, it’s seen as crowd-puller that can act as an excellent first time experience for anyone who’s always thought about taking on a challenge but never quite got around to it.

The run, starting at 10am, is both a local summer tradition – just like the Highland Games – and a terrific advertisement for Balloch’s unrivalled outdoor attractions.

Now is exactly the right time to be planning that first ever open water swim event, particularly as this year sees the launch of the Great Scottish Swim 250 event – which is neatly calculated to

appeal to people who wouldn’t contemplate the very demanding full challenge. It’s 250 metres long (the equivalent of ten lengths of a standard pool), and as the organisers point out allows people to literally “test the water” and get a feel for swimming in the great outdoors. The 250 is reckoned ideal for nervous swimmers, families, and children aged eight and over. Wetsuits are compulsory, and each child aged 12 and under must be

accompanied by an adult (who will be aged 18 or over). If you are interested in this August 25 event make plans now, as places are limited. For children aged eight to 12 the entry payment is £20, which includes the entry of one adult per child, while for anyone aged 13 and over it’s £15. HARRY GETS GEORGES’ TITLE

HOMEHELP DOMESTIC SERVICES

We know Prince Harry is now Earl of Dumbarton, but just what is the pedigree of this little-known Scottish aristocratic honorific?

Clydeside Domestics are the service for you

The prince is just the third man ever to hold the title and, perhaps most surprisingly, the other two were both named George Douglas.

A colourful and supremely able character, he deserves to be much better known, but isn’t one of the better known characters from Scottish history.

The second Earl (died 1749) was (just like his dad George) a classic Jacobite in exile, but seems to have led a low-key sort of life compared to his livewire father.

The Earldom ceased to exist on his son’s death, and this year’s revival of the title for Prince Harry will be the first time “Earl of Dumbarton” has been active since the mid-18th century.

The First Earl had a distinguished and hugely influential military career which spanned both the Scottish and French armies, and latterly he was a right hand man of James VII of Scotland. Like so many other Catholic noblemen of the day he was forced into exile when the fickle wind of religious politics turned against James, and he accompanied his erstwhile king to France (and was eventually buried there).

So will last month’s bestknown newly-wed be visiting Dumbarton in the near future along with his wife Meghan, who becomes Countess of Dumbarton. On past form that’s a little unlikely, as, for example Prince Charles (Prince of Wales) is probably much more familiar with Scotland than Wales, and while the Duke of Edinburgh must have visited the capital

The Helensburgh and Lomond Highland Games have become an international success story attracting visitors from 22 countries last year. Many said they certainly wanted to return as they found that the venue offered a great range of trade stalls and entertainment beside the traditional sports. Chairman Sephton MacQuire said: “There were 45 stalls last year of which very few were locally based, the majority came from the Inverness, Edinburgh or Glasgow areas. Business people too have realised it is an ideal way to raise your profile by sponsoring events and becoming involved

with a spectacle that helps put Helensburgh on the World Map.

“We are again this year running, on behalf of the Scottish Highland Games Association, three championships, the British 90m track, the new Scottish 200m track and the Scottish 22lb Shot Putt.

Organisers promise there will once again be all the sports events which are the major part of any Highland Games and add that young people from the area’s schools are participating. Beside the track events there will also be a hill race.

“There will be some great entertainment for the children with bouncy castle, giant slide, paintball , children's marquee in which the Magician puppeteer

There will be Youths and Novice Open Heavy events to complement the professional Heavies, always an exciting part of any Highland Games, and Highland Dancing another favourite of visitors and local people alike plus of course pipe bands.

STAGS SET FOR BALLOCH FUN

If you are a chap currently looking forward to a summer wedding the July 14 Loch Lomond Highland Games at Balloch offers a fun way of organising your “stag” celebrations. The popular tug-o-war contests at the Moss o’Balloch Park event aim to allow you and your chums the chance not only to show off your muscular power but also a niche way of collecting some cash to spend later on. There’s a novice five man event and, for seasoned contestants, an open eightman event – both offering good prize money. For more information and the day's schedule go to: www.llhgb.com

THOSE PIPES ARE CALLING It’s not “just” a Pipe Band Championships event – there is plenty more on offer too – but more than 140 bands will leave Dumbarton people in no doubt that next month’s big Levengrove Park happening is a highlight of the summer. Framed by the stunning backdrop of Dumbarton Rock, the Scottish Pipe Band Championships on July 28 is a spectacular free entertainment that’s also an exemplar for Scotland’s national music – and welcomes players and enthusiasts from all over the world. This annual event has taken place in good weather and bad over many years, and just keeps getting better – for many pipers it is the most important event of the year, and is a classic showpiece of real Scottish culture of a type even Edinburgh at the height of the tourist season simply cannot match. Running from 9am to 6pm, on past form the championships will attract around 25,000, maybe more, to a spectacular day dominated by the skirl of the pipes and the stirring accompaniment of

It’s one of the easiest local events to join, nobody is marking your card for performance, and you don’t even have to run – we’re talking about this month’s 2k and 5k event in Balloch Country Park The event is open to people of any ability, and can involve simply walking or jogging instead of running. There’s no charge involved, and no need to register either, as this is one of the most sociable and accessible community activities in the area. To be staged on June 23, the event starts just inside the main gates of the Park at 9.30am (opposite the bus terminus, next to the Co-op). You do run at your own risk, of course, but the route will be marked out with directional signs,

and there’s no need to turn it into a stressful must-complete challenge – you do just as much or as little as you feel able to. It being Scotland, where almost anything is possible weather-wise, you are advised to call the hotline number in advance to check if the run has been cancelled due to adverse conditions. It’s unlikely, but that better safe than sorry number is 07534 365271. For further information visit runnpark.leaguerepublic.com

A successful youth scheme which exceeded all expectations has led to well-deserved recognition for dedicated council officer George Smith – who is this year’s winner of a coveted top award. George, who is the council’s employee of the year, is a Development Officer in the Working4U service, and he planned and developed a summer programme for young people seeking confidence and opportunities which attracted more than 500 participants. The Youth Alliance Cashback programme allowed them to get involved in outdoor and sporting activities as well as cultural visits. The six week summer programme was run by West Dunbartonshire Youth Alliance, in partnership with voluntary group Y-Sort-it. George said: “I am absolutely delighted to receive this award. I really didn’t expect to win with so many examples of great work. “I was happy to put in the extra hours to set up the programme which was really successful and it

was fantastic to get the support and financial backing from the Scottish Government. “I am surrounded by a brilliant team and along with many dedicated volunteers and partners, including Y-Sort-It and Working4U Youth Learning, we are working to improve the lives of our young people.” Among others to be recognised as having gone the extra distance for service users this year were Balloch Library Team, who received this year’s Community Award for outstanding service and the warm reception offered to visitors at the branch. The team, who were praised for providing a service second to none, were nominated for the outstanding welcome offered to all visitors who are made to feel individually important.

The Young Ambassador of the Year Award went to Darren McLeod an apprentice painter and decorator in the council’s environment and neighbourhood service. Darren was awarded for being a model apprentice and for always giving 100 per cent.

MS GROUP’S FUNDS BOOST Dumbarton and District Multiple Sclerosis Group members are this month feeling “overwhelmed” by a bumper £7,400 donation from staff at the national park – the highest amount workers there have ever collected for their chosen charity.

hard work and generosity of staff and their family and friends at the National Park Authority. “MS is a cruel disease and can have a devastating effect on families. With the money raised by the National Park Authority we are planning to offer a counselling service to those affected as well as their carers and family members.

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a neurological condition which affects the nerves and causes the immune system to stop working properly. It can be a very isolating illness as it

causes a wide range of symptoms which affect people’s mobility and confidence and there is often a lack of suitable facilities to support sufferers. The £7,400 raised by park staff will help support local services in the area including providing holistic therapy to anyone within the MS community. Fascinating Facts CLEAN LOCH Loch Ness is the second largest Scottish loch, however did you know that it contains more fresh water than all the lakes in England and Wales combined!

HISTORY ON SHOW AT ROCK Scores of talented costumed performers will take their Dumbarton audience through an epic “action replay” of the last 2,000 years this month, as another Rock of Ages spectacular comes to town. The event traces the Burgh’s remarkable past, from the days of the Romans through to the 9th century Norse invaders, the Stuart kings of Scotland and on to the modern age – and the world wars.

LONGTERM The longest pregnancy on record is 375 days (12.5 months), Amazingly, the delivered baby was only 6 pounds 15 ounces.

This grand history pageant includes a chance to find how swords and bows were made back in the days when the Lennox was a wild and untamed country where mortal danger lurked at every corner. But it will also show how Scotland developed through the many sweeping changes that came with the industrial revolution and then the world wars. Run by Historic Environment Scotland, Rock of Ages is an event that can be enjoyed by people of all ages, and is run to the same high standard as other mainstream summer events at key heritage locations including Edinburgh, Stirling and Linlithgow.

The sun provides energy as heat, light and ultraviolet rays (UV). Some UV is absorbed in the atmosphere, leaving two forms, UVA and UVB which reach us. UVB rays have a greater risk of causing skin cancer; however UVA causes ageing, wrinkling and loss of elasticity in the skin, leaving damage as permanent as a tattoo. UVA also increases the damaging effects of UVB, including skin cancer and cataracts.

Usually, UV reacts with melanin – a pigment in the skin, which defends against sun damage. Sunburn happens when the amount of UV is more than can be absorbed by the melanin, causing longterm damage. Evidence shows that frequent exposure to UV rays (including sunbeds) or sunburn in childhood can greatly increase skin cancer risk in later life. Each year 2,200 people in the UK die of skin cancer, so it pays to protect. So it’s best avoiding midday sun, use clothing, sunglasses or sunscreen to block the sun (if it appears!), and take extra care with children.

Tennis tournament pic with Maia Lumsden centre

West Dunbartonshire Leisure has launched a new drive to get more local youngsters playing tennis – helped by a rousing endorsement from Scottish professional Maia Lumsden. The West Dunbartonshire Leisure Grand Slam Tennis series was officially launched at Kirktonhill Tennis Club in Dumbarton, where the Vale of Leven and Dumbarton P4 Tennis Competitions were staged. It’s an ambitious project which aims to spread the word that tennis is more than a game to watch on TV.

Maia was there to pass on some top tips to could-be Andy Murrays of the future. The series will feature three tournaments − the Vale of Leven Grand Slam, Dumbarton Grand Slam and Clydebank Grand Slam. The tournament will include a five-week training programme, and will tie in both the French

Open and Wimbledon – the Clydebank event will be staged during the last week of the US Open. Maia Lumsden said: “Keeping children active is so important, and tennis is a physically challenging sport that is also a whole lot of fun. “It’s brilliant to see youngsters being encouraged to try tennis and I think the West Dunbartonshire Leisure Grand Slam series is a great idea. It was my pleasure to be in Dumbarton to help spread the news about the series.”

June 2018 | Get Ready For Summer Feature

GET READY FOR A

Summer is finally here, home or away, it’s when we recharge our batteries so we’ve been looking at ways of getting the best out of an all too short season. (writes Nick Cowie) The experts tell us you should spend longer preparing for your holiday than actually lying on a beach. Shivering in your cossie in your back garden on a sunny but deceptively

cold Scottish summer day isn’t much fun. So a fake tan it is – a professional one though – no homemade horrors. In the real sun, slap

on the factor 30. Boiled lobster is not a good look and you risk skin cancer. Then there’s clothes. Cargo shorts, tee shirts especially ones emblazoned with logos or slogans and the ultimate horror

Get Ready For Summer Feature | June 2018 of a sleeveless vest too often mark Brits out from our cool cousins in mainland Europe. Most guys are quite happy in shorts and a tee shirt but in most places the smarter you are, the less likely you are to be categorised as a tourist. The Italians and Spaniards, in particular, tend to steer away from shorts for all occasions, especially board shorts. If you are in the city go for lightweight long trousers – also the rule in smart resort hotels. Women heading to any of Europe’s beach destinations should opt for a few simple, lightweight pieces, in cotton, linens and silks and you’ll have an outfit for all occasions. You want to be on top form and get the best out of the summer. What you eat will give you a boost. That means fruit, fresh

vegetables, particularly broccoli and other green vegetables, dried fruits too such as apricots, raisins and mango give a concentrated source of carbohydrate, making them a great energy booster. Bananas are the perfect fitness food and packed with nutrients – so is the peel. Try the whole banana in a smoothie. Exercise is the tough one. We all mean to but somehow life gets in the way. One easy way to start is simply walk quickly for 20 minutes – make it part of your journey to work, you’ll feel far better when you arrive. Or how about combining a swim with your morning shower. For a long term plan local gyms can tailor a fitness programme for you and you are more likely to succeed with help. Check out the leisure centres – there are plenty of indoor

sports and activities children can participate in. The swimming pools often offer special deals and fun days. You go away to wind down and destress. But that can start long before you go. Plan your holiday schedule for quality, not quantity. Finally, we all know how wonderful the summer holidays can be. It’s a time to be free from routine. However, it can also be a time when we hear a record amount of times, ‘I’m bored'. But these days you don’t have to have a great deal of imagination to come up with the goods. First place to check out is your own local area and a glance at our advertisers certainly will give you a jump start into summer pursuits.

GETTING RID OF WASP BIKES It’s peak season for wasps, and every now and then some unlucky householder will find they have set up an elaborate home for themselves – typically in a shed or garage. It’s potentially dangerous to try and deal with a wasp bike yourself, and this year the council’s pest control service is offering to remove them from private homes this summer for a reduced fee of £25 plus VAT. If this seems a good option you can book the service – and rid your property of those pesky stinging insects – by filling in an online form at http:// ow.ly/3JGL30jVCzD

A guardianship order is an order made under the Adults with Incapacity (Scotland) Act 2000 which provides a person with authority to act on behalf of an adult who does not have capacity to make decisions for themselves or act on their own behalf.

is entrusted to safeguard and promote the interests of the adult in financial or welfare matters or, where appropriate, both. It is a responsible legal position and any person considering applying to become a guardian should consider their duties seriously as well as consult a solicitor for full advice.

The order is sought by way of Summary Application to the court nearest to where the adult resides. A sheriff will only grant the application if it is in the best interest of the adult to do so and there are no other appropriate remedies.

The process can be complex and the application requires to be supported by certain medical reports and also intimated on the appropriate people.

An alternative remedy may be an intervention order. This would apply if there was a one off or specific decision only to be made. A Guardian

Funding of the Guardianship Orders is based on the relevant adult's finances and Welfare Guardianships are generally not means tested at all for legal aid.

MIDNIGHT LEAGUE AN EVENING OF GRANDEUR If you are among the SESSIONS many who tend to

Midnight League is sevena-side football, and runs at the 4g pitch in Alexandria’s Argyle Park until Friday, June 22. Any girl or boy who is 12 to 18 years old and lives in West Dunbartonshire is welcome to go along and join the fun – even if you just want to chum along with your friends rather than play. It takes place every Friday from 8pm to10pm, costs just £1, and is run by council staff. The sessions operate under a zero alcohol policy, and offer youngsters a safe and fun venue.

It’s on June 6, and features John R Turner, Organist Emeritus at Glasgow Cathedral and Susan Turner, Soprano, in a concert which features a dazzling array of some of the most awe-inspiring compositions ever produced – for example some of the best-known work from Handel’s Messiah. It might seem an unusual production for summer, a season we associate with jollity (and, in and around Dumbarton, with the skirl of the pipes), but this event should prove beyond doubt that the combination of A-class organ music and Susan Turner’s magnificent singing voice is a combination that can impress in any season.

More than 150 acts have been announced for this summer’s Mugstock.

Included in their repertoire for the evening are the beautiful Allegretto from Felix Mendelssohn’s 4th Symphony, and the dazzling Toccata, Adagio and Fugue in C by Johann Sebastian Bach. By total contrast the performance also features a rendition of The Swan from Saint-Saens’ wonderful Carnival des Animaux – and much more besides. For full details visit www. dumbartonriverside.org.uk/2018/ 05/organ-recital-wednesday-6thjune-2018-730pm/

Taking place at Mugdock Country Park on July 27 to 29, the fourth festival of its kind welcomes an exciting and eclectic mix of artists. Mugstock’s seven stages will be busy with live performers and there will also be a host of other entertainment including theatre, art, comedy and crafts. Food, drink, camping and general merriment will complete the line-up. Full adult weekend tickets for MugStock 2018 are £65 and £32.50 for teens and over 60s. Under 12s are free. For full ticket details, visit www.mugstock.org/tickets.

KEEP PARK BEAUTIFUL APPEAL

Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park has teamed up with Keep Scotland Beautiful to support their roadside litter campaign by using messages on bins and lampposts at key visitor sites. “Give your litter a lift” signs have been placed on bins and lampposts at key locations throughout the Park where visitors often stop to pick up something to eat or drink or enjoy a picnic along their journey. Simon Jones, Director of Conservation and Visitor Operations at Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park, said: “Litter doesn’t just ruin a great view, it can be harmful to people and wildlife”.

PLEASE HELP DUMBARTON CATS AND DOGS

TOWN TO ECHO TO PIPES AND DRUMS

ARE YOU IN THE TUESDAY CLUB?

The closing parade from a previous championship marching down Sinclair Street, beneath the Bicentenary Pipe Band Championships Banner

The Scottish SPCA is asking animal lovers to donate sensitive and hypoallergenic food and wood pellet cat litter to help the abused, abandoned and injured animals at its Dumbarton Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre. Centre manager Joe McDade said: “We’re caring for a large number of dogs and cats at the moment and we’re going through food and cat litter really quickly - so we’d be grateful if locals could lend their support. “If anyone wants to donate – or meet some of the animals in our care – they can do so by dropping in anytime between 10am and 4pm (closed Tuesday).”

One of the most spectacular events of the summer season takes place this month when the town echoes to the skirl of the pipes and drums. The Bicentenary Pipe Band Championships will be held on Sunday 24th June 2018 at East King Street Park, Helensburgh with the Opening Ceremony at 12 noon and the March Past of Pipe Bands for the prize giving at approximately 5pm.

and a great opportunity to listen to some of the top pipe bands in each grade. There will also be a highland dancing display from the BPC winning dancers who will be competing the week before on Sunday 17 June 2018 at the Commodore Hotel, Helensburgh.

The championships will begin with a performance by Inveraray & District Grade 1 Pipe Band, the current World Champions and Champions of Champions weather permitting.

“In addition there will be numerous trade stalls, food stalls , a Bucking Bronco, children's rides, a raffle and a Bar.”

Chairperson Colina Helen Campbell tells us: “Bands from all over the country and overseas will be competing, a spectacular sight

Entry is £5 adults, £3 concession, under 5s free. For more information or if you would like to volunteer on the day, sponsor an event or join the committee contact CH Campbell 07710 427535.

There’s a great youth club for kids 10-plus and S1 onwards at St Patrick’s Church Hall, Strathleven Place in Dumbarton on Tuesday. It runs from 8pm to 9.30pm every week, and has loads of fun activities to offer, including ball games, board games, music, computers and internet and Wii – and there’s a tuck shop too. But as well as these regular weekly fixtures there’s also the chance to go on outings with organised parties and even a weekend away – and all are welcome. Contact stpatsyouthg1@ btconnect.com for more information or just go to the hall on Tuesdays from 8pm.
