MUSEUM BID FOR GLENCAIRN This month could mean decision time for a potentially ground-breaking plan to transform Dumbarton’s oldest building into a £4.6million state of the art library and museum – finally putting currently empty Glencairn House into spectacular new use. Approval for the scheme may depend on the level of support from the public, at a time when some might argue the major capital outlay involved could be spent on many other local amenities. However the ambitious proposal aims to answer what’s seen as a need to give the Burgh a heritage resource worthy of its history and a resource that could help to breathe new life into the hard-hit town centre. Although not a feature of the outline plan the new centre could also flag up the pivotal role of the Dumbarton area in the story of King Robert I in the Scottish Wars of Independence. If approved the scheme would also see the existing library at Strathleven Place become a

community collections store and archive, where for the first time the public would be able to explore rare and important objects from West Dunbartonshire’s museum collections. The scheme, which could help revive the moribund High Street, would involve adding a new fourstorey annexe to Glencairn House – and the whole project would contain significant elements aimed at community and family use. The new museum would include an entire floor dedicated to local history, and many items could be displayed regularly for the first time. For example a 2nd Century Roman medallion, the Skellat Bell from around 900 AD and – of more recent vintage - Sir Jackie Stewart’s Dubonnet trophy, and fine art from the Overtoun Collection.

An amazing treasure trove of documents would also become more accessible, such as a signed Commission by King James VI and I to the Baillies of Dumbarton to apprehend and try persons suspected of witchcraft. Glencairn House dates from 1623 and was originally the town house of Earls of Glencairn. Robert Burns received his freemanship of the town there in 1787. Culture and communities strategic lead Malcolm Bennie said: “Glencairn House presents a great opportunity for this

council to create a new library for Dumbarton, with purpose-built, modern facilities that are more accessible for residents. “It would also provide a permanent museum celebrating the history of this area which is something the community has previously supported. “In addition the proposal would protect the history and heritage of this area by giving a new purpose to the oldest building in West Dunbartonshire, and provide a new sustainable future for the existing library building”.

SIR JACKIE’S BURGH HONOUR
uPVC POLISHING
One of the area’s most famous sons is to be honoured and celebrated this month with a special commemorative walk to celebrate his 80th birthday. The man in question is race legend Sir Jackie Stewart, the Formula One champion who in the course of a spectacular career became a household name across the world – a veritable king of motor sports. The event is on June 11 in Dumbarton’s Levengrove Park, and is being staged on the 50th anniversary of the day he won the Formula One Championship in 1969 – and will also celebrate his 80th birthday. Sir John Young (“Jackie”) Stewart OBE from Milton fully earned his famous soubriquet “the Flying Scot” in Formula One contests between 1965 and 1973, winning three World Drivers’ Championships in 1969, 1971 and 1973. The event being staged in his honour – the local equivalent of a lifetime achievement award – has been organised by Sporting Memories Foundation Scotland and West Dunbartonshire Council. Besides the immortal glory of his racetrack triumphs Sir Jackie
Stewart has also been instrumental in improving the safety of motor racing, campaigning for better medical facilities and track improvements at motor racing circuits. Today, Sir Jackie Stewart devotes his considerable energies to his global charity, Race Against Dementia, which he founded to accelerate the research into finding treatment and a cure for dementia.
Jackie Stewart in his glory days
It’s likely a large crowd of local well wishers will turn out for the event at the park’s New Pavilion, between 11am and 1pm on the day. The one mile walk around the park offers participants the options of two or three laps of the route, to mirror the achievements of Jackie’s three Formula One Championships, and is suitable for

BALLOCH RESORT BID’S RECORD The hugely controversial holiday resort scheme planned for Balloch was this month reportedly on course to clock up a planning applications milestone – as a scheme with the highest number of objections yet recorded.
However the volume of people that would be brought by the planned hotel, leisure centre and other amenities is being seen by objectors as a threat to the environment – notably to at-risk species including otters and red squirrels. Meanwhile the scheme would reportedly aim to build on what has been described as the success of the Lomond Shores scheme. It’s understood around 3,000 people have objected to the plans, while thousands more have signed an online petition against a plan that would see hundreds of new private homes and chalets created on farmland near the site.
joyce mcneil
chartered psychologist
Many objectors want the local landscape to stay pretty much as it is.
SMOKING CESSATION HYPNOTHERAPY Research comparing many different studies of hypnotherapy has shown that on average smokers are over FIVE TIMES more likely to break the habit with hypnosis than by willpower alone. Hypnotherapy in general is also proven to be MORE THAN TWICE AS EFFECTIVE compared to nicotine gum. If you really want to stop smoking, then ONE SESSION of hypnotherapy could be all you need.
A 2 hour hypnotherapy intervention focusing you on Smoking Cessation Pre assessment for suitability and motivation. Follow up “booster” session if required. To book your session visit the website
joycemcneil.co.uk
The claim was from Green MSP Ross Greer, one of the many thousands who are completely opposed to a plan its supporters argue would offer a useful and sustainable new seam of visitor tourism infrastructure for the already massively popular area. Mr Greer set up a petitions portal which has attracted tens of thousands of objectors to the plan, amid claims that potential
traffic problems have not been addressed and that job creation claims are wide of the mark. The new wave of objections follows the recent release of the long-awaited masterplan for the site by developer Iconic Leisure, which according to one report expects the scheme to create 80 full time and 50 part time jobs, as well as dozens of seasonal posts.
However Iconic argues the scheme will open up the area’s natural environment to enjoyment by more people, and should it gain approval aims to have the project up and running in around four years’ time. As the area’s most contentious plan the scheme – apparently no longer to be called Flamingoland – will face lengthy and closelyargued opposition in what promises to be a marathon series of planning hearings.

ROADS CLOSED FOR GASWORK
MOVING YOUR ITEMS FROM A TO B
Dumbarton residents face weeks of roadworks on one of the town’s busiest routes, as old metal gas mains are refitted with modern plastic pipes. It’s said to be a job that badly needs to be done, as the project follows a spate of major emergency repairs. Scottish Gas Network says the scheme will ensure safety for decades, and avoid the need for future disruption. The work started last month with an estimated duration of 17 weeks, and is planned to take place in three phases. In an information leaflet, SGN says: “We’ll always provide advance notification if we need to use temporary traffic lights or close a road. “If our work affects local bus services, this will be advertised in advance too. “Some on-street parking in your road may be restricted to

A spokesperson said: “From

MAGNIFICENT SEVENTH WALK! It seems only yesterday since the now hugely popular Walk in the Park events were launched in Balloch, but this month many regular fans – and newcomers – will be taking part in the seventh annual spectacular. Some are also veterans of the Shortbread Run, which has become an established local favourite at the start of the new year. On Saturday, June 15, at 9.30am, a 2k and 5k event will start just inside the main gates of Balloch Country Park on Balloch Road (next to the Co-op supermarket), and of course you are free to decide which one suits you best. There’s no registration, no fee and no official recording of times, because this community-inclusive event is about participation, not competition - but children under
This month kicks off with a spectacular Bobath Dragon Boat Race in Balloch, which sees a number of motley crews battling it out for the potential glory of reaching the nail-biting Grand Final.
11 have to be accompanied by an adult.
Most of those taking part have no previous experience, just a will to win and the wish to help a worthy cause. Each team will take part in at least three races during the qualifying rounds, before the two fastest teams compete for the title honours.
The course will be marked out with directional signs on the day, but it must be stressed that participants will run at their own risk. It’s also worth calling the hotline number on the day – it’s 07534365271 (but don’t leave a message) - to check whether the run has been cancelled due to adverse weather conditions.
This annual fun event is on Saturday, June 1 (11.30am to 4.30pm), and there’s more information at www. bobathscotland.org.uk/event/ dragon-boats-2019.

BABY EARL BOOST FOR BURGH Will Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor be the star attraction at next year’s planned Dumbarton 2020 Festival – and will the Duke and Duchess of Sussex use the occasion to pay a visit to the area? At the moment the only definite major “signing” for what could be a massive celebration of Burgh life and heritage appears to be iconic Scots actor Sir James Cosmo, who it’s understood will be leading the grand parade at the event. But according to royal-watching website Royal Centre, Harry and Meghan’s new arrival “is about to make the town very famous indeed”. This is because royal Archie acquires Prince Harry’s second title as Earl of Dumbarton, although it remains to be seen whether the honorific will have any specific relevance to the area.
the Earl following James VII of Scotland and II of England into exile – the title became extinct when he died, four years after the failed ’45 Rising led by Bonnie Prince Charlie. Now the Queen has revived the title – albeit not for the Jacobites – to make Harry the Burgh’s first royal earl – although it may come to be more widely used in connection with his and Meghan’s new-born son. Regardless of the arguments
for and against the perceived importance (or otherwise) of the title to modern Dumbarton there’s no doubt even a token appearance by the royal couple and their son would put the Burgh on the national and international stage in a way even the most highprofile heritage festival might otherwise struggle to accomplish. As plans continue apace for next year’s big event we will just have to wait and see what the title means, if anything, to the 21st century Burgh.
The royalty pundits note that the Burgh has an illustrious history, as one time seat of the ancient British Kingdom of Strathclyde, besides the later history of the Earldom as a bulwark of Scottish and British royalty. Unfortunately, perhaps, it was linked most strongly with the doomed cause of the Stuarts, with

LOCHSIDE TRIATHLON EVENTS The famous – some might say notorious - Loch Lomond Beastie Triathlons will be held in and on the banks of Loch Lomond at Balloch Castle Country Park on Saturday, July 27. Organisers Loch Lomond Swimming and Triathlon Club are in their 19th year of running events, and this time around are hosting the Scottish National Championship Aquathlon in addition to two triathlons. The events are reckoned ideal for everyone from first timers to hard-core triathletes, and are all set in the stunning landscape of Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park. The Wee Beastie is said to be perfect for first timers, as the 400m

Demand from would-be participants appears to be high, so if you have entered but later need to cancel you’re asked to let the club know as soon as possible so they can offer the place to another swimmer.
swim is shallow enough to stand up in at any point. The 8.5km mountain bike route runs both on and off road, followed by a 3k run in the grounds of Balloch Castle. The Beastie 750m swim, 17km off road cycle and 5km run is a more daunting proposition! At the finish line all entrants will receive a goody bag, with a medal, to mark their achievement. The races are: Beastie Sprint Triathlon: 750m Open Water Swim

HOUSING TEAM IS PURE GOLD
MAID NEEDS VOLUNTEERS
A significant honour for the area’s tenant participation advisory service proves West Dunbartonshire residents are getting an ace service.
The Maid of the Loch at Balloch is looking for volunteers able to commit to a day a week – and if they have any engineering and mechanical skills (or other talents that could prove useful) they’ll be particularly welcome. A spokesperson for the project said: “Volunteers are the backbone of this whole project, without whom the Maid would be consigned to the history books”. The ship is being returned to steam at this stage so it will be an exciting time to join us. For further details please email mail@maidoftheloch.org or phone 01389 711865.
The housing team has been awarded gold standard recognition, the highest rating available for local councils, after a judging process which involved interviewing staff members and tenants. To mark the achievement a plaque was presented at a recent liaison meeting with West Dunbartonshire Tenants and Residents Organisation. Housing convener Councillor Diane Docherty said: “Our tenants are at the heart of everything we do and so we are delighted that they have been recognised for their hard work. “We want our services to reflect their needs and the only way to do this is by engaging with them and listening to their views and ideas. “We are lucky

GOLF’S RYDER CUP COMPETITION AND BUCHANAN CASTLE GOLF CLUB BOTH HAVE RICH HISTORIES
Buchanan Castle Golf Club
With a combined age of almost 200 years, both Club and competition continue to grow from strength to strength. But there is perhaps one man, unbeknownst to some, who links both the Ryder Cup’s and Buchanan Castle’s histories together. Eric Brown was a PGA Professional at Buchanan Castle Golf Club. He played in the Ryder Cup Competition in 1953, 1955, 1957 and 1959, winning all of his singles matches. Eric Brown was also the Captain of The Ryder Cup Team in 1969, when Jack Nicklaus famously conceded Tony Jacklin’s putt to halve the match at Royal Birkdale. He also topped the European Order of Merit in 1957.
In 1957 the British team won The Ryder Cup and as part of that winning team, Eric got to take the Cup back to his Club, and that is how The Ryder Cup came to be at Buchanan Castle Golf Club for the first time in 1957, and apparently it sat on the piano in the lounge for the best part of a month. Changed days indeed!!
European team won the trophy in 2018 meant that there was an opportunity for him to bring the Ryder Cup back to Buchanan Castle Golf Club after 62 years.
In 2018 the current PGA Professional at Buchanan Castle Golf Club, Keith Baxter, having been Chairman of the Scottish Committee of the PGA was co-opted on to the Board of the PGA. Keith’s position on the Board and the fact that the
Our Club celebrated this great event on Saturday, 30th March with a Charity Shotgun Competition for 80 members, 40 Europeans in blue and 40 U.S.A. in red. The European team won, of course. There was plenty of time for photographs with the wonderful trophy, then after a fine meal there was a great
raffle with every player winning a prize, then an auction after which Keith gave us an insight into the association of Eric Brown with Buchanan Castle Golf Club and his involvement in the Ryder Cup. Keith then regaled us with some of his experiences at the Ryder Cup in Paris last year. The sun shone all day and the PGA Benevolent Fund benefitted to the tune of almost £4000.00 What a great way to start the new golf season!!
If you would like to be a member of Buchanan Castle Golf Club, you can join for just £500.00. Contact the Club Professional or Secretary on 01360 660330 or by email secretary@buchanancastlegolfclub.co.uk, www.buchanancastlegolfclub.co.uk

HELPING YOUR LOCAL SSPCA Scotland’s animals charity is appealing to kind hearted Community Advertiser readers to help at the Pets at Home Summer Fundraising Drive to raise vital cash for abused, abandoned and injured animals at its Dumbarton centre. The SSPCA is looking for anyone who can spare even an hour of their time to volunteer at the Dumbarton Pets at Home store, possibly in tandem with friends or work colleagues. Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre superintendent, Sharon Comrie, said, “Until June 13, locals can pop down to their local Pets at Home store where they will get the chance to meet Scottish SPCA volunteers, supporters, staff members – and dogs – from the Scottish SPCA’s animal rescue and rehoming centres.

What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn
This month: NO PAIN - NO GAIN...? A few weeks ago the Health Department announced that there would be “Government Health warnings” on packs of strong pain-killers such as codeine and morphine to alert people to the dangers of long term use of these for noncancer pain. There have been growing concerns both here and in America that people are becoming addicted to drugs for long term conditions such as back pain or arthritis which are causing a worsened quality of life. These can cause constipation, fatigue, and low mood and often do little to help the patient’s overall health and well-being.
Admittedly it has been difficult for GPs faced with patients complaining of recurring or long-term pain to offer help in the short term, other than resorting to the prescribing pad. The first rule of Medicine is “first do no harm”, and perhaps adding to patient’s problems by prescribing strong painkillers may not be the best option in the long term. Pain is a distressing unpleasant experience but is mediated through three main mechanisms – Physical, Psychological and Emotional. Hopefully we can look to a future where we address the pain problem more holistically and reduce reliance on drugs?

SHARING AND REPAIRING MEANS ZERO WASTE A popular new service at Alexandria Library is setting a trend by providing residents with access to a large stock of tools, camping equipment, gardening and decorating equipment. The addition of repair cafés to provide support and tuition needed to fix broken belongings is on its way! With the first event, in partnership with Repair Café Glasgow, proving a success in March Rag and Bone Projects are planning more to come. The scheme was born from the growing move towards sharing, reducing and repairing. Repair and Loan is part of social enterprise Rag and Bone Projects, whose aim of allowing residents to borrow equipment in order to cut down on cost and reduce waste is part of a larger programme of initiatives in the area. The library is a Community Interest Company, all fees will be ploughed back into the organisation, which has also opened a Zero waste shop in Dumbarton East, ‘Made Zero’

This is a world away from the standard practice of binning items, from clothes to furniture that aren’t up to spec without finding whether they could be repaired. However this obviously requires expertise, and the group are now on the lookout for volunteers to run more repair cafés at the library. Repair Cafés are popping up all over the UK and are said to be making a critical difference. Membership costs £20 for 12 months and users can borrow up to five items at a time for up to two weeks.

Summer is here at last and while our expectations weatherwise are often on the low side this side of Scotland, we do have the advantage of loads of things to do right on the doorstep rain or shine. For children and young teenagers why not try fun outdoor activities such as canoeing, kayaking, sailing, gorge walking, climbing, scrambling, ropes courses or mountain biking, to name a few. Spice up the summer with adventures in the local area, exploring the environment and learning new skills. The summer holidays with their long evenings offer a
great opportunity to get fit. The local gyms all have structured programmes but you don’t have to go to the gym to get in shape. Map out before or after dinner walks with your partner or friend. Plan for catching up on your day over a stroll around the town rather than on the patio with a glass of wine. Whether it’s a hike, trail run, bike ride or a water activity like paddle boarding or rowing, scheduling Saturday or Sunday outdoor fun days are also a great way to keep fit and experience the beauty of the season. A budget browse for a new summer wardrobe is always fun. A few new items in your wardrobe can sometimes be the remedy to help you feel better and motivate you. Experts advocate a cool European look for the summer holidays.

People who live in hot climates know how to keep cool while looking fashionable. Cargo shorts, tee shirts especially ones emblazoned with logos or slogans and the ultimate horror of a sleeveless vest too often mark Brits out - that and the sunburn! It is likely of course that many Europeans will be escaping the heat to visit us. People flock from all over the world to Scotland and always try to experience our Highland Games. If you missed Helensburgh’s, The Balloch and Rosneath Highland Games are in July and there are others an easy drive away.
Sometimes though all you have to do to experience the best of Scotland’s summer is walk. There are some great trails in our area, one of the very best being the Three Lochs Way. All the details and some excellent photos are on their website.
We of course have the National Park and Loch Lomond right on our doorstep. Check out the Park’s website which is chock a block with great summer events and ideas. Or pop along to Bishopton Week where there are lots of family fun filled activities to choose from.

TWO AWARDS FOR YOUNG CHEF ROSIE Rosie Maguire, a chef at the Loch Lomond Golf Club had a double triumph recently at the Scothot, Scotland’s premier showcase for food drink hospitality and tourism.
with Gill Bowman BA LLB This month: THE SCRA Last month I discussed the steps involved in progressing grounds of referral through the court system. Following on from that, and once grounds have been established, a hearing is convened in order to determine what happens next.
As well as taking the silver medal in Young Chef of the Year she cooked the winning best main course in front of a live audience – venison loin, caramelised celeriac puree, roasted onion faggot, pickled berries and scorched purple sprouting broccoli. The 22-year-old has been working as a Demi Chef De Partie in the Fine Dining kitchen since graduating from Derby University in June last year and has just been promoted to Chef De Partie. The competition, which recognises the best chefs under 23 involved competing with other chefs to produce a meal in twoand-half-hours in front of a live audience. She said afterwards: “I was very surprised and proud I managed to

win best main course as, although we were around the same age, some of the other chefs had been in the industry five years longer than I had. I went to university first to study culinary arts so I thought I was on the backfoot experience-wise.” Darren Harrison, Executive Chef at Loch Lomond Golf Club, said: “We are all delighted. Rosie is really competent, and has exceeded expectations.”
The Hearing is made up of three panel members who are trained volunteers. One panel member is responsible for chairing the hearing and a Reporter from the SCRA will be there to ensure all the correct procedures are adhered to. Also present should be the child, their carer or parents, social work and any other person who may have relevant information, such as a teacher or health care provider. The purpose of the hearing is to decide whether the child’s circumstances require some form of compulsory measure for their own protection, guidance,

treatment or control. An order should not be made in relation to a child unless it is necessary. This becomes a relevant consideration where there may already be a voluntary arrangement in place that resolves the concerns raised in the grounds for referral and the supporting facts. There are many examples of this and they may include a child staying with a family member for a period of time or a parent attending a parenting class or addiction support services. If made, a compulsory order should remain in place for a year. The child or a relevant person can ask for a review of the order after a period of three months and the social work department can request a review at any time. Again, you are entitled to legal representation at a children’s panel and if you have any questions you should speak to a solicitor.

Robin House was a place of fun and laughter. They let us see that there was still joy to be had, and they promoted the importance of our children having the best possible quality of life, even during the most difficult of times. Going there meant that we could enjoy family life without the everyday medical regimes and sleepless nights.” Claire, CHAS Mum

MSP’S PRAISE FOR ENABLE SCOTLAND Dumbarton MSP Jackie Baillie recently hosted a special reception at the Scottish Parliament to mark the 65th anniversary of disability charity ENABLE Scotland, which for decades has fought consistently and effectively for disabled rights. First Minister Nicola Sturgeon was a guest speaker at the event. Jackie Baillie has worked with the charity as convener of the Cross Party Group on Learning Disability, and can testify to its campaigning strength on issues both local and national. The charity’s chief executive, Theresa Shearer, said: “I am confident we will be here for as long as people with learning disabilities need us to campaign for them and give them a voice. “We will be here until every person with a learning disability lives the life they choose.”
POLISHING
SAMURAI SWORDS SUCCESS Five members of Dumbarton’s Yushinkan Iaido dojo achieved passes during a weekend National seminar and grading in Edinburgh. Regular readers will know that this demanding martial art centres on the noble art of Samuraistyle swordsmanship, and its growing local band of followers have registered some important achievements. Their success is arguably a great advertisement for the sort of training new members can expect at this relatively new but very enthusiastic Dumbarton club. Dave Main and Calum Kerr were awarded 2nd dan (black belt) and three others, Bjoern Seitz, Jamie Simpson and Richard Firestone achieved 1st Kyu (brown belt). Donnie Gordon who leads the club said: “I am delighted that the hard work of our members has been recognised at national level,
especially as our club has only been running for 18 months'. “We have other members who will soon be challenging similar goals and this success will provide good inspiration. “We train in Dumbarton (Saturday) and Newton Mearns (Sunday), teaching the Japanese Samurai sword art of Iaido.” The group welcomes female, male and junior members as well as martial arts returners.

hacks GO-AHEAD FOR HUB SCHEME Residents in Dumbarton’s HYDRATION Westbridgend are to run their own ESSENTIAL set new community hub,
The benefits of hydration are plentiful. Drinking the recommended 8-10 glasses of water a day can help keep you healthy, improve brain function and best of all, fuel your activities throughout the day!
fun JUNE’S THE NAME June was the 39th most popular name for a baby girl in 1925 in Englishspeaking countries but it dropped out of the top thousand in 1986. As a boy’s name, it peaked in 697th place in 1922.
answering a longstanding wish which is finally set to become reality after more than a year of lobbying and planning. Councillors last month gave the green light for local people to operate a completely new facility on the site of the former Westbridgend Community centre, after an application detailing how it would be used if residents were in charge. The outline proposal for this important new local facility envisages a resource which will include space for activities to suit all age ranges, from babies to toddlers, with lunch clubs, fitness classes and provision for people with disabilities, as well as a café, after school and evening clubs. After last month’s crucial decision on the issue the process that will
lead to the new centre being designed and built was formally set in motion. The former centre was demolished in 2017, but with the understanding that a Community Asset Transfer application with a detailed business plan would be submitted by a community group for future use. Councillor Iain McLaren, Convener of Infrastructure, Regeneration and Economic Development, said: “I am delighted for Westbridgend Community Hall Development Association, as I know how hard they have worked on their plans for the new hub.
“These residents know exactly what their area would benefit most from, and that’s why transferring this asset to them is a great move. “Giving residents the chance to have a real say in what needs to be improved in their area, and give them real pride in their surroundings, is vital and I hope this success encourages more people throughout West Dunbartonshire to get involved.” Councillor Marie McNair said: “This new hub will benefit the community of Westbridgend enormously, and I’m very impressed with the business case the group set out”.

CAN YOU DO THE THREE LOCHS? A DATE WITH
THE VIKINGS
It starts in the familiar territory of Balloch before plunging off into rural Argyll and Bute, through Helensburgh, Garelochhead, Arrochar and into Inveruglas – and it’s “not for the faint-hearted”. We’re talking about the Three Lochs Way effort on June 8, a 34-mile slog being staged in aid of Big Hospice Week – which has a major resonance with many people in this area. Most are aware of the work carried out at the Robin House children’s facility run by Children’s Hospices Across Scotland (CHAS) in Balloch, and will also know at least someone who has taken part in a fundraising initiative on its behalf. But this is a very special challenge, one which will appeal to people who are already probably experienced walkers and who have a deeply-felt appreciation of
the West of Scotland’s unrivalled countryside – from the bonnie banks to the glowering peaks of The Cobbler, Narnane and Acrois above Arrochar. Of course weather on the day can make a difference, but the sort of person ready and willing to commit to such a trek over the varied terrain involved isn’t likely to be put off by a spot of rain. The Three Lochs are Loch Lomond, the Gareloch and Loch Long, and the route contains masses of features of interest and also of profound scenic beauty. We’re told that while it has been developed primarily with walkers
in mind it also accommodates both bikes and horses – so participants will probably meet some interesting people as they progress along this early introduction to the Road to the Isles. The registration fee is £30 to take part, and there is a minimum required sponsorship of £150 – which is a fairly modest amount for most people to be able to collect, even in what is now a very tight timescale. If you are interested in taking part you can contact Jennifer Mackenzie on 0141 429 9811 or by email on jennifer.mackenzie@ ppwh.org.uk.
The annual Rock of Ages dramatised history and heritage festival at Dumbarton Rock has a Viking theme this year – taking its cue from the Dark Ages invasion and siege of the once powerful fortress, and the Norse raids across Scotland. The weekend event on June 8 and 9 will have a special focus on the Scandinavian hard men who ultimately discovered Christianity and buried their kings on the holy Isle of Iona. The drama will recall the impact the Vikings once made on the West of Scotland and Clydeside, as well as the Hebrides and, especially, the far north – a show not to be missed. You’ll find full details at www.historicenvironment. scot/events.

For the 10k, meanwhile, current course records include Keith Anderson’s 29:31 in 1997, while Yvonne Murray-Mooney holds the ladies record with 34.04 in 1998.
There are just a handful of the sort of big local outdoor events that qualify as “traditions”, but the Loch Lomond 10k (Saturday, June 22), is definitely in that league. It is organised by West Dunbartonshire Leisure Trust (WDLT), and together with its associated fun run has been a summer favourite for 32 years.

The 33rd run starts at the Moss O’Balloch site at 10am, and is reckoned ideal for people striving to complete their first ever 10k – but still offers a competitive challenge for the more experienced.
A spokesperson for the event, formerly the Polaroid Eyewear 10k Series, said: “We have a scenic route that takes you through Balloch Castle Country Park (providing the stunning backdrop of Loch Lomond) and along the River Leven.” Every runner is also presented with a t-shirt, bespoke race medal, and a goodie bag with water, snacks and discount vouchers for local services and attractions.

HIGHLAND DANCERS SAY BONJOUR A team of talented Highland dancers were flying the flag for Scotland when they took part in an international dance festival in France..
FATHER’S DAY
The school has been delighted to provide dancers on many occasions for the event and is proud to be able to showcase highland dance on a European stage.
What Dad wants the most is a day free from any pressure. Sometimes planning the perfect day actually adds to the pressure of Father’s Day! Give Dad a day off. No deadlines, no chores, no fighting, no hassles, no fixing things and let him relax.
Sandra said: “We were delighted to perform in Argenteuil once again this year, the invitation means our young team were once again able to enjoy a fantastic dancing experience. “They were all very excited to be making the trip across to Paris to showcase their love of highland dancing and were all very supportive of each other. As well as being dedicated students they are also fantastic friends and are all a delight to work with.”
(Front to Back) Morla Bruce, Leah Aitken, Skye Austin, Mirren McGlashen, Caitlin Marsh, Hannah Cameron and Zoe Colraine
Argenteuil is twinned with Clydebank and The Agora Association celebrate the link by hosting the spectacular dance event every year. They invited dancers from Scotland, Romania, Italy, Germany and Portugal to come together in 'Un Gala de Danses Modernes des Villes Jumelees'.
The team - Leah Aitken, 11, Skye Austin, 11, Morla Bruce, 9, Hannah Cameron, 11, Zoe Colraine, 14, Caitlin Marsh, 12 and Mirren McGlashan, 12 all live in Dumbarton and the Vale and attend the Sandra Lees School of Dance in Jamestown.
This year’s showcase took place on Saturday 25th May at the Salle Jean Villar Festival Hall.
Teachers Sandra Lees and Margo Lusk supported the girls as they
fun
showcased highland dance in a trio of specially choreographed routines.
