By making defi brillators available in the community and training volunteers to administer lifesaving care in the minutes before an ambulance arrives, the chances of survival from a heart attack can be doubled.

Save a life: Members of the Dumbarton Rotary Club learned quite a bit on their recent CPR training day

It is a skill most people hope they will never have to use, but knowing how to operate a defibrillator can sometimes literally mean the difference between life and death. Members of the Rotary Club of Dumbarton recently attended a Heartstart and CPR training course in the Vale of Leven Medical Centre, run by charity chairperson Sheenah Nelson. The course was based on defi brillators, and members of

JGS

the club were trained to handle the life saving equipment. The session demonstrated the procedure to be followed in the event of an individual suffering a heart attack, from initially summoning help to the simple use of the defi brillator before

The Drymen Show isn’t until late May (we’ll have more next issue), but the call had already gone out in February for one of the most important events on the programme – the now traditional annual baking contest. Every year has a theme, and this year contestants are challenged to make a Carrot Cake (“in any form you wish – as long as it’s baked”). The word has been put out now because the organisers are keen to encourage the widest possible entry (and no, you don’t have to come from Drymen).

To enter, all you have to do is be a non SWI (Rural) member, bring your carrot cake to the Rural Tent on the big day in May, either before 9.30am or between 1pm and 1.30pm, and clearly label your entry (which is free) with your name, address and contact number.

This year the organisers are delighted to announce again that the Bake Off has been sponsored by June McEwan, and she has donated another beautiful Rebecca McEwan plate, which will be presented to the winner on the day. The Bake Off is of course just one event in a show which combines all the best ingredients of an agricultural show with those of a family fun day, and is a brilliant introduction to the big local outdoor Highland Games and piping events of the summer – all within easy range of home. Organised by Strathendrick Agricultural Society it includes judging of some of the fi nest livestock, from Clydesdales to Highland ponies, besides cattle and sheep. All this runs in tandem with a fun fair, helicopter rides, trade stands, main ring attractions, pet and craft tents.

Life of a Kaiser’s Pirate The Lennox Heritage Society has had some fascinating speakers on all sorts of interesting subjects over the years, but the story behind this month’s talk is in a league of its own - like something out of a very far-fetched novel. On Wednesday, March 14, speaker Ken Colville will give an account of a man who in some respects made Blackbeard look like a rank amateur, not least because he survived all his adventures and lived to a ripe old age. The corsair in question is Kapitan Felix von Luckner, also known as “Seeteufel (the Sea Devil) and “The Kaiser’s Pirate, a buccaneering commerce raider who cut a swathe through Allied shipping across the globe during the First World War – using the ruse of arming a normal cargo vessel with hidden guns and powerful, souped-up engines.

He was the Dick Turpin of the seven seas, and it took a determined effort to run him down on the far side of the world. Soon he made a daring escape, only to be finally cornered and sent off to a POW camp in New Zealand.

Luckner survived the war, and the Nazis (he negotiated the surrender of the German city of Halle to the Allies, at the request of the mayor), and settled in Sweden, dying aged 84. Those are just the edited highlights of a story which proves that the traditions of old seadogs like Drake and De Ruyter were powerfully alive in the 20th century, within living memory. Society meetings are at 7pm in the Concord Centre in Dumbarton, and annual subscription is £10 – or you can pay £2 for a single talk.

The message that plastic is a threat to nature is starting to hit home, with programmes like the Blue Planet spelling out just what our freewheeling attitude to refuse is doing to the environment. But you are more likely to get a coherent account of just why single-use plastic cups (for example) are wasteful from a local school pupil than most adults – like so many ingrained habits it will be a generational change. In the meantime the local authority is battling to get close to where it wants to be on

straightforward recycling, with news that West Dunbartonshire households recycle just 49 per cent of their household waste – a fi gure it wants to increase to 70 per cent by 2025. The campaign message will appear on posters and banners this month, with social media messaging also planned. There’s a big fi nancial bonus at

Regeneration convener Councillor Iain McLaren said: “We really appreciate the efforts of our residents when it comes to recycling, but we also know that some simple changes in how we dispose of waste can have a massive impact fi nancially for the council and, of course, it also plays a huge role in protecting our environment. “Your blue bins accept plastic, paper, metal and cardboard. On top of that, the Council offers a range of options to recycle just about anything.” Blue bins take plastic bottles, tubs and trays, (as long as they’re not black), paper, food and drink cans, and cardboard and cartons. It’s good to rinse out containers, because it helps keep bins clean and makes items easier to recycle. Glass can be taken to one of the many glass collection points in each area, while brown bins accept all kind of food waste.

wHiCH CHarity is yoUrs? the publicity for the event – but the walks starting in Glasgow or Clydebank are a mighty 23 miles and 14 miles respectively, so the local walk is easily the most inclusive and allows many who couldn’t manage the longer hikes to have a go. The Mighty Stride once again starts from Hampden Park, then heads through the south side, into Glasgow Green and along the Clyde past the Finnieston Crane and Riverside Museum, through Yoker on to the cycle path to Clydebank.

KILTWALK CHALLENGE: The Kiltwalk takes place on 29th April with options of 23 and 14 miles

There is a lengthy queue of laudable causes vying for your attention if you’re thinking of taking part in this year’s Kiltwalk spectacular – which for this area ends in Balloch - and they all deserve support. Most people ultimately choose a cause which has some personal connection through friends or family, while for some it might seem an idea to support one of the charities that enjoys a less high profi le than the ones we hear about regularly.

That’s where the Big Stroll begins, continuing through Bowling, Dumbarton and Vale of Leven to the fi nish line within Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park at Moss O Balloch.

everyone’s contribution is worthwhile.

The big day is April 29, so anyone taking part can start training round about now (when the weather is half decent at least some of the time) to be ready in time, and to collect sponsors. Either way this massive fundraiser The Balloch “Wee Wander” is three laps of Balloch Country is solid gold to organisations Park, a total of just over six miles, which rely on public cash to and is lumped in with Glasgow in function to full effect, and

Nearly 7,000 people took part in one or other of the walks last year, and there could easily be more this time around. For most charities there is no minimum fundraising amount, leaving you free to set your own target and raise as much as you can. For full details and to register visit http://www.thekiltwalk.co.uk/

BUSINESS awards Comic-Con

returns to Balloch

There’s still time, but only just, to enter one of the prestige categories of the West Dunbartonshire Working4Business Awards 2018 – and it could be well worth having a go, especially if you run a thriving local “mom and pop enterprise. Working4business is a partnership of public sector organisations that have joined together to provide a one stop coordinated service for businesses in West Dunbartonshire. The awards are open to businesses of all sizes, in all sectors, and categories include both Family Business and Excellence in Customer Service. It is free to apply and companies can apply for up to three of the nine categories available. Judges are looking forward to finding inspiring examples in West Dunbartonshire’s vibrant

business community that illustrate the wealth of talent and enterprise in the region. All finalists will gain publicity, and the winners will be announced at the glittering awards dinner at Clydebank Town Hall on Friday, April 27 But you’ve only until 5pm on Friday, March 9, to submit an application form – so don’t delay if you want to be in with a chance of gaining potentially valuable public recognition for your enterprise, whether large or small. For full details visit www. working4business.com

Just a reminder that next month’s big crowd-puller in Balloch is Comic-Con at Loch Lomond Shores, a hugely successful celebration of popular comic culture which looks set to become an annual event here. More than just a big market selling sometimes hard to find titles it also features loads of toys, arts and crafts, and some colourfully-dressed characters impersonating anything from Imperial space marines to Spiderman. It takes place over two days, April 28 and 29 (11am till 5pm) and is just £2 to enter (under-10’s go free) – though you’ll probably want to take a few bob to spend on the merchandise.

GLAMOUR SHOW: Anyone wishing to take part should sign up by 31st of March

It’s not until October, but Breast Cancer Care’s “The Show Scotland” has a March 31 deadline for entries – and for anyone who has had a breast cancer diagnosis it is well worth considering. The event is described as “a very special, life affi rming and inspiration event celebrating the strength and courage of our models taking to the catwalk for the fi rst time - a fundraising event like no other.” Breast Cancer Care is seeking entries from women (all ages) across West Dunbartonshire who have had such a diagnosis

and fancy a glittering night of glamour at Glasgow’s Hilton Hotel. It is a chance to have your hair and make-up done by the charity’s professional teams and experience the feeling of strutting down the catwalk in front of 1,000 people. You will have clothes selected by stylist and fashion expert

Ian Tod, styled from a range of designer and high street outlets. There’s the option of joining the Afternoon Show for a delicious three course lunch, or at our Black Tie Evening Show for a four course dinner, and tickets for both will be on sale shortly. One participant from last time commented: “What a privilege it was to share that unbelievable experience. “I feel like I’ve found a new family because of everything that we have been through together. “A group of women, more than the sum of its extraordinary parts brought together by an outstanding team of dedicated and talented pros. “I was humbled and honoured to have been standing on that stage when that outpouring of love hit us like a wave as over 400 cheering people got to their feet at the end of each show. “Thank you all so much for a day I’ll never forget”. You can email theshowscotland@ breastcancercare.org.uk or call 0345 077 1892 for more information.

LIBRARY TIME: The new timetable has been agreed and will be in place in the next couple of months

It won’t happen for a couple of months, but the new timetable for library opening hours has been agreed - following what’s said to be one of the area’s largest ever public consultations.

The charge is said to be the second lowest in Scotland, and the service can also help pupils to buy their own instruments at a discount rate – so avoiding yearly charges altogether. Corporate services convener Councillor Ian Dickson said: “In these tough fi nancial times it is absolutely essential that we make the best possible use of all of our resources.

Legal Matters with Gill Bowman BA LLB

This month: Guardianship for your ChiLd Traditionally, parents have asked family or friends to act as godparents to their child. A godparent will usually have an active role in the child’s life and are specifically chosen to take over the care of a child in the event of the parent’s death; to become their guardian. In the event you wish for this role to be taken literally then it is important that this appointment is formalised in writing. This can be done by detailing your wishes in your will or, alternatively, by having a specific document drafted under S.7 of the Children (Scotland) Act 1995.

An appointment of a guardian will come into effect in the event of the parent’s death and will continue until the child reaches 18. Although, between 16 and 18 the role is limited to providing guidance. A guardian is essentially a parental substitute and will have full parental rights and responsibilities in relation to the child. There should, therefore, be serious consideration given as to who should take on that role. The role of guardian can be revoked by you if you wish and, again, this should be done in writing. A solicitor will be able to assist by drafting the necessary documents.

West Dunbartonshire Community Foodshare is among around 28 groups to receive valuable cash from the community budgeting fund, and will reportedly be using the money to convert its ordinary van to a refrigerated model.

food and fuel.

With no sign that austerity is about to end, and the launch of Universal Credit causing massive problems across Scotland, it’s a move which allows the hardworking foodshare volunteers This is so that it can uplift surplus to tap into the goodwill of food from local supermarkets and supermarket bosses and put much-needed supplies to bring much-needed aid to the many families across the area that good use. Many other local groups involved cannot afford to pay for both

The former torpedo factory has fought against the recession and out of town competition to cut a dash as a destination shopping venue, but the new owner has exciting plans which could see seven different areas converted for use as a day care centre for adults with complex needs – a facility likely to be of enormous use both locally and across the wider area. Meanwhile although many of the community budgeting grants are in the order of a few hundred pounds that is cash that can often make a substantial difference to a project – for example Dumbarton Youth Football receives cash to purchase storage containers to secure newly purchased football goals and equipment at newly formed hub sites in Dumbarton, Alexandria and Clydebank.

Ever wondered how crafts folk turn ordinary glassware into sometimes spectacular pieces of art?

It used to have the stamp of something only trendy Wendies would get involved in, but for several years now the once unusual idea of growing your own food has gone mainstream – because the side benefits can be very rewarding. Once upon a time anyone with a small plot of land would grow food on it, particularly in the lean times of the 30’s and the war years, and of course allotments are as old as the hills. But a whole new generation are discovering that being able to grow at least some of your own fruit and veg is both a cash saving and very satisfying way of stocking the domestic larder. It doesn’t have to be an allconsuming passion or even

something that takes up a lot of your spare time, but does repay serious effort when you can spare it. Growing West Dunbartonshire is staging a celebration of community gardening in the Concord Community Education Centre in Dumbarton on Saturday, April 28, from 10am – where there will be members of groups who know the ropes and can pass on useful advice, and there’s information on how to tend fruit trees too.

On March 17 artist Jude Stewart returns to Clydebank Museum to teach the fascinating art of glass painting (runs from 1pm till 3pm cost ÂŁ10 including materials). By the end of the class you will know a lot more about the skills needed to produce your own glass art, and also two pieces of your own glass work to take home with you.

Great sUCCess at tHe fiNNisH LiNe Many people volunteer their time and effort to fundraise for CHAS, the organisation behind the hugely successful Robin House children’s facility in Balloch – but one recent endeavour surely deserves special praise. An intrepid team carried out a three day trek in northern Finland, run by event organisers Breaking Strain, in conditions reckoned the most extreme ever experienced on the trail.

Trekking 72km over three days on frozen lakes and through snowcovered forests, at the same time as pulling 20kg pulks attached to their waists, camping in tents at night as temperatures plummeted to a low of minus 34 degrees on one night – were among the challenges faced en route to the “Finnish line” It was worth the effort as the team raised more than £25,000 for CHAS through their amazing efforts. One of the CHAS trekkers, Sarah, said: “The fi rst day of trekking was by far the best. We were well rested, highly caffeinated, excited, and enthusiastic.

river, chatting away, and simply enjoying the thrill of what we were doing. “It got a bit harder trekking later, including a slight hill which made negotiating the pulk downhill a little interesting - but still all happy, all positive and all lovely. At the bottom of the hill we emerged onto an enormous frozen lake, and as the twilight twinkled its last and darkness enshrouded us we trekked down towards the welcome row of tents already erected for us by the 'logistics' team, and a roaring fi re.

Another trekker, Scott, said: “This was defi nitely the toughest challenge I have ever taken on, “We started the trek walking two both physically and mentally, but it was worth it and more. or three abreast, down a frozen “There are no words to describe the feeling of crossing the fi nish line. “It was partly relief, but the emotion and the realisation of what you have achieved just hits you.” There’s more information about CHAS (Children’s Hospices Across Scotland) at www.chas.org.uk
