girLs’ poignant triBute

Maria Yakovchuk and Nicole Henderson from St Peter the Apostle High School were amongst 72 S3 history pupils from throughout Scotland who paid tribute to the soldiers who fell in The Battle of Arras, 100 years ago.

Two S3 pupils from West Dunbartonshire were among students recently given the honour of placing a wreath on the Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery at Arras in France. For Maria Yakovchuk and Nicole Henderson from St Peter the Apostle High School it was an unforgettable moment, marking the centenary of a First World War battle that claimed tens of thousands of lives. The Scots alone suffered 18,000 casualties in the terrible fighting of the great assault – almost the equivalent of the entire population of modern-day Dumbarton. The Battle of Arras was supposed to be the great breakthrough effort that would deliver a war-winning blow against the

Germans and make all the sacrifice of the carnage at the Somme and Verdun somehow worthwhile. But the battle, which ran from April 9 to May 15, was to prove yet another dismal failure, and also a Scottish national catastrophe. No less than 44 of the 120 battalions that made up the ten British assault Divisions were Scottish. Seven of the Canadian battalions involved were also proudly Scottish in origin. Nobody involved with the commemoration remotely thought only of the Scots who

died, but it was the First World War battle in which the most Scots were involved, and for that reason has a special resonance north of the border. During their once in a lifetime trip to the Great War killing fields of France Maria and Nicole met pupils their own age from France and Canada. Together they reflected on the appalling sacrifice made by the First World War generation, and participated in one of the main centenary events – a real piece of history. The trip was organised by WW100 Scotland in conjunction with the Armed Forces in Scotland, Legion Scotland, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, Education Scotland and Mercat Tours.

The commemorations reflected WW100 Scotland’s aim to encourage a spirit of research and inquiry, particularly among young people, to help create a lasting legacy. As well as participating in the Arras commemorations, the students visited a range of other battlefields, cemeteries and memorials. Cabinet Secretary for Culture, Tourism and External Affairs, Fiona Hyslop, said: “The casualties had a devastating impact on those back home at the time, and resonate to this day in our collective memory. “I am heartened our young people attended this commemoration – helping to ensure future generations will not forget the horrors and grief associated with war.”

waLK this waY to roCK A new £2.5 million waterfront pathway linking Dumbarton Town Centre to Dumbarton Rock has secured crucial planning permission. But as this issue went to press there were still some key issues to address, and we won’t know for a while whether it is definitely going ahead in exactly the way the council hope it will. Nevertheless it does seem highly likely that the 1,140metre coastal walkway, approved by Councilors at Planning Committee, will be delivered by December 2019. It’s a scheme which everyone in Dumbarton should find of interest, as it could be seen as a lynchpin of a wider plan to bring new life to a town centre that can look a little as if it has been through the wars.

Taken in tandem with the ambitious development plan to replace the old distillery tower with housing it’s a scheme which promises to change the town for the better. On a practical note it will be ideal for walkers and cyclists, and for tourists and visitors to Dumbarton Castle – and will be fitted with guard rails, wave walls and lighting. The council will work with landowners including Dumbarton Football Club, Turnberry Homes, Lidl, Culross/Dunbritton and Historic Environment

Three safety-conscious youngsters from Knoxland Primary School scooped the top prize in West Dunbartonshire Council’s 2017 Primary Public Speaking competition. It’s the second year in a row the school has reached the final. Fraser Craig, Mara McKelvie and Heather McDaid saw off competition from seven other West Dunbartonshire schools to win the event, held at the council’s Garshake headquarters. The school’s proud head teacher, Helen Brown, said: “I am extremely proud of Mara, Fraser and Heather. They worked

Everyone’s heard of the real Legoland, but this – called Brick Histories – is a rather different proposition. Using Lego bricks no less than 50 often giant displays will feature themes ranging from the end of the dinosaurs to the destruction of Pompeii. The family-friendly exhibition created by master modeller Warren Elsmore will include an interactive play area where kids can create their own masterpieces, and a soft play brick area for younger visitors. It will also be the first time the public will see inside the newly refurbished Bruce Street Baths which will stage the exhibition at the Clydebank Town Hall. Gill Graham, manager of libraries and cultural services, said: “This is a fantastic exhibition and

“As a result we’re expecting high demand for tickets and so it is really important that people book early to avoid disappointment.

Visitors can see ‘Brick History – The Tour’ at Clydebank Town Hall’s Bruce Street Baths Monday to Sunday 10am – 4.30pm, from Friday, June 16 until September 2.

“We’re delighted to be able to attract a national exhibition like this to the Town Hall and I think this just shows how the venue is going from strength to strength. It is also really exciting for the area to see the historic Bruce Street baths being reopened to the public so that everyone

Pupils of Linnvale Primary School performed hit musical Divided City and the show's writer was in attendance to enjoy the show

Local primary school pupils recently staged their own production of hit musical Divided City in front of the woman who made it famous across Scotland.

Divided City writer Theresa Breslin – who has now seen her work performed all over Scotland – was in attendance for the afternoon performance of the play at Linnvale Primary.

“It was very emotional and I could feel myself fi lling up at points. When I wrote the book I never imagined there would even really be an audience for it, never mind that it would be performed by school children in so many places.”

She said: “I’ve seen the play performed many times, but each time it’s a little bit different

Laura Mason, the council’s chief education officer, said: "Set in the context of football teams, the project focuses on pupils' rights and responsibilities and encourages them to challenge any sectarianism they may encounter in their lives. “It is a remarkable way of telling what is a very important story, encouraging them to collaborate in a really meaningful way. “All of the pupils involved have responded to this task with great maturity and have told the story brilliantly. “I have no doubt that the parents and families who go along to see the plays will be equally impressed.”

If there’s anything calculated to draw attention to the area’s annual books and writers’ festival it’s the news that Mel Gibson is going to be a star turn this year. But relax – it’s not “that Mel Gibson”, of Braveheart fame. The lady in question is Dr Mel Gibson, one of Britain’s leading experts on comics and graphic novels.

Week one includes Julian Glover exploring the life of Thomas Telford, reckoned possibly the most extraordinary engineer Britain has ever produced.

Running from May 8 to 20, Booked! 2017 offers a wide range of authors, poets, and singer-songwriters and this year’s line-up aims to offer something for everyone.

The line-up includes everything from “tartan noir” to a meditation For football fans sports journalist on pregnancy, and the programme Hugh Keevins will be chairing a panel featuring Old Firm legends is certainly not short on variety.

rogue traDers warning Another is to give a cheap price to clean and clear the garden but then charging much more for ‘extra’ work carried out. Some may also claim they can replace rotten wooden soffits, fascia boards and guttering when in fact they use cheap plastic to cover the problem instead. With summer just around the corner, Trading Standards and Police are asking for home owners to be extra vigilant against rogue traders

Trading Standards and police are warning residents of a likely increase in rogue traders operating in the area as we head towards early summer. With home owners planning repairs and improvements, there’s a seasonal opportunity for rogue traders – and every year unwary people fall into the trap. Trading Standards report that they normally see an increase in complaints about home improvements at this time of year with roof repairs and gardening work among the most common. Rogue traders can use intimidating or aggressive

practices, and sometimes overcharge and provide misleading statements about the work that they offer. This often leaves householders out of pocket and facing more bills to put problems right. Common scams used by rogue businesses can include offering to initially replace a tile or slate on the roof but then stating that water is getting into the roof and that it needs replacing urgently.

A dedicated local care at home team – which helps people recover from hospital stays and injuries – have been recognised with a national award. West Dunbartonshire Health and Social Care Partnership (WD HSCP) – Care at Home Team were presented with a Special Award for collaborative working in an integrated setting. The team impressed judges with their ability to help residents who need care to remain at home. They were also praised for their part in delivering a crucial part of the partnership’s integrated

provision for older people and those in need. As well as an excellent core service, the team created an integrated out of hours care service and district nursing service to respond effectively to risks and avoid unnecessary hospital admissions. In 2015 and 2016 the service, which predominately provides care to residents over 65, provided

What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn

This month: ALL THE LONELY PEOPLE….

West Dunbartonshire CAB is looking to recruit volunteers to train as advisers for its new training intake this month, starting on May 11. Volunteering with CAB is reckoned to be interesting, friendly and very worthwhile, and full training and support is given so no formal qualifications or experience are required. The staff at each of the three CAB offices in West Dunbartonshire (Alexandria, Dumbarton and Clydebank) offer new trainees daily support within a very friendly environment. What does it take to be an Advisor? All sorts of people volunteer as CAB advisors and provide free, confidential, independent and impartial advice. There are some things Bureau Advisors have in common though.

CAB Advisors are good listeners, work well in teams, and don’t judge people or their circumstances. They need to bring some skills to the post, including some IT ability, and – crucially – they have to enjoy helping people. Other abilities which are needed for CAB volunteers to work effectively include being able to work well in teams, and, importantly, being able to commit to an average of six hours per week. To apply, go to www.wdcab.co.uk/ volunteer and fill in the application form or contact natalie.roger@ wdcab.co.uk – 01389 717174 for an application form.

Studies show that 1 in 10 people over 65 always feel lonely, with up to 4 in 10 admitting they sometimes feel lonely. Loneliness, especially as we get older, is a growing problem, linked with increased risk of dying earlier, heart disease, stroke, hypertension, dementia and depression. It might even be as harmful as smoking or obesity. What can we do about it? Firstly, if you feel lonely, try to do something about it. Invite friends or family, consider volunteering or joining a group such as “Men’s Sheds”, RVS or a club, and try to eat well and exercise to offset the

health risks. If possible speak to people in the area about local groups which might suit you. As a community we should look out for those who may be lonely, and make an effort to talk, listen or point people in the right direction. Local Health and Social care has identified it as an issue worth working to improve. Paul McCartney may not have know where they all came from, but we know lonely people may be living just next door! COUNCIL ELECTIONS

ANDREW MUIR INDEPENDENT CANDIDATE

MAY

th

Andrew Muir is standing as an independent candidate in the Dumbarton ward. He is doing this as a matter of conscience due to the underlying culture of dishonesty in local politics. In the last five years several councillors have banned him from their surgeries and blocked his emails whilst in the 2016 Holyrood election campaign his article on the NHS was censored by the press. The NHS is his main issue. The health board is unelected and has closed many bits of the Vale of Leven Hospital. There are no effective safeguards against ill treatment in hospital or care homes and this area has one of the worst life expectancies in the UK. He is on the board of Voices of Experience (a Scottish mental health charity), on the committee of Carers Scotland, and has spoken at the Carers Parliament and at Cross-Party Working Groups on Mental Health, Carers and Human Rights at

Holyrood. He has corresponded with the United Nations on the incompatibility of forced treatment with human rights law. Since coming to Dumbarton in 1982 he has been a regular member of St Patrick’s Church and campaigns against abortion as he feels strongly that it is not right for many innocent babies to be killed each year. He has been a member of Silverton & Overtoun Community Council for several years and has been involved in many planning issues including the “Save Posties Park” campaign. As a former school teacher he takes a keen interest in education standards and attends the Parent Council meetings at his daughter’s secondary school.

As a contract pensions actuary he is concerned about the very generous pension and salary packages paid to high ranking council officers whilst the area has large unemployment, a lack of affordable homes and food banks.

when an individual complains about the state. A local family did not get justice as a result of the actions of a bin lorry driver in Glasgow. Our legal system is antiquated and unfair. We need to scrutinise the decisions made and fight other injustices too.

Local democracy is in a poor state and needs to be overhauled. The results of consultations are routinely ignored (e.g. the site of Bellsmyre for OLSP was chosen by only 15% of those who voted). Decisions made are not democratic as instead of 22 councillors making a decision, it can be decided by 2 or 3 councillors who will then use the party whip to engineer a block vote. The banning & censuring of councillors under their Code of Conduct is biased and arbitrary. Independent councillors have been banned simply for criticising a council officer whilst the ruling party councillors will escape punishment for political reasons. If elected he will aim to remove these practices.

Andrew remembers the days when the High Street used to contain a quality butcher, greengrocer and stationer. Now we have many empty shops and an unhealthy look with venues promoting smoking, gambling, borrowing, drinking etc. In order to encourage entrepreneurship and employment this area needs to be open and presentable. Whilst not campaigning Andrew’s main hobby is chess – he won a Gold Medal at the 1998 Chess Olympiad in Russia and currently runs the Glasgow Schools Chess League.

aLL set for the VaLe 10K Following the decision to close Polaroid Eyewear, the series assets have been passed to West Dunbartonshire Leisure Trust and will continue to be supported by ex-Polaroid volunteers. The race series was first run in 1987 in collaboration between enthusiasts in Polaroid and some local clubs, and has grown to see over 1,000 runners taking part in each race in recent years – record numbers took part in the 30th anniversary events last year. The West Dunbartonshire Leisure 10K, to be run on Saturday 10 June, is part of four 10K road races over the next couple of months

Next month’s big crowd-pulling local event is the West Dunbartonshire Leisure 10K on June 10, a continuation of the highly popular Polaroid Eyewear Vale of Leven 10K. Starting in the Moss O’ Balloch site it will include the much loved school and pre-school age fun runs which are are open to all. The Polaroid Eyewear 10K Series had grown since its first race in 1987 with around 100 runners, to up to 1,000 runners taking part in each race over the last of its 30 year run.

The series comprised of four 10K road races in May and June and set in the towns of Dumbarton, Helensburgh, the Vale of Leven and Clydebank, with the aim of providing a safe, well organised series of community running events that participants of all ages and abilities can enjoy.

Vale of Leven winners over the years have included John Hanratty 1987, Peter Fleming 1990, Nat Muir 1991, Chris Robison 1993/94, Keith Anderson 1997/98, Kenyans Benson Masya 1999 & Stephen Ariga 2001. In 2000 local athlete Glen Stewart took the honours. Last in the series is the Vale of Leven 10K, which now starts and finishes at the Moss of Balloch and includes a lovely run through Balloch Country park and along the cycle path on the banks of the River Leven. NOW IS THE TIME TO INVEST SAVE THE BEES

SOCIALISING

EDUCATION

Bees are vital to our economy and to the environment because they are such excellent pollinators. Many farmers depend on bees to ensure good crops, however our bee population is at risk. Planting a garden is an excellent way to ensure that the bees and other beneficial pollinating insects survive in your area. Although many common garden vegetables have flowers that attract bees, planting flowers and herbs in your garden will make them even happier.

It seems that few people know their neighbours anymore, but when you spend time outside in your garden you may find yourself chatting with the neighbour over the garden fence. And once you realise you have planted more green beans or tomatoes than you could ever use, you’ll be surprised how delighted people are when they see you come their way! Growing food also brings families together in the garden and at the table by encouraging more home-cooked meals.

If you have kids, there is no better way to introduce them to healthy habits than to involve them in growing a garden. Children are much more likely to want to eat vegetables they have grown themselves. Most kids are excited to watch tiny seeds sprout and grow and home grown fruit and vegetables are more nutrient-dense than conventional produce, with greater taste and crisp intense flavours. It’s a great antidote to sedentary, indoor lifestyles benefitting the body and fulfilling the spirit.

EXTENSIONS

Is it time to upgrade your appliances, windows and other energy impacting parts of your house? Upgrading your home with energy efficient features will not only save you money each month on your utility bill. For example, a washing machine with an AA+ efficiency rating can use up to 70% less energy, and therefore costs 70% less to run, than a G rated machine. It may also make the home more attractive to younger & more energy conscious buyers.

There are many reasons to consider updating your home and getting creative with remodeling can be an exciting venture. It is an opportunity to express your individuality and style. Sometimes changing the colours of your home interior or remodelling old rooms, can have the effect of changing your outlook on your home and living environment. The money that you decide to spend will be a long term investment in the comfort and enjoyment of your house.

Home extension is a great way to create new space. With the cost of moving home getting ever costlier, recent years have seen an increase in the number of cramped householders choosing instead to stay put and free up some space by extending their property or converting their loft. By building a conservatory or extension to an existing property, or by converting the loft, householders can bypass the time, effort and numerous fees associated with moving.

Dumbarton’s West Kirk Church Hall is to be the venue for an important local meeting on Tuesday, May 9, when plans for a new community centre at Westbridgend will hopefully start to take shape. The meeting will discuss the current plans for the new centre and get local involvement to set up a committee to run the facility. The council have allocated £675,000 to build the new facility, but for the plans to go ahead, the centre needs to be community run and a committee needs to be set up to make that happen. The meeting runs from 7.30pm to 9pm.

Payment Protection Insurance (PPI) policies were sold to around 45 million consumers between 1990 and 2010. The intention was to provide cover for people who lost their job or became too ill to work and were unable to maintain loan, credit or store card repayments. It has now been recognised that the policy was mis-sold to many of these customers as they did not need it nor were they ever likely to be eligible to even claim it. As a result, customers have the right to reclaim the policy payments made and the banks have set aside £45bn to meet the costs of potential payouts. However, billions remain

unclaimed and the Financial Conduct Authority have now set a deadline by which time all claims must be submitted, being 29th August 2019. It is free to make a claim and many online forums can assist with doing it yourself. You can start by checking old loan or mortgage statements. It is important to be aware that claims can be made even after the victim has deceased as any money owed will form part of the estate. In the event there is any likelihood you have been mis-sold PPI then it is essential you do not miss the deadline as any claim submitted after that day will not be considered.

Planning Loch’s future There’s still plenty of time to reply to the National Park’s consultation on how the area’s biggest natural asset should develop over the next five years. But now is arguably a good time to remind anyone who is interested that it closes on Monday, July 3, because with the onset of the holiday season next month most people’s minds may be on their well-earned summer break. The plan outlines a set of priorities covering conservation, visitor experience and rural development, and aims to encourage people of all abilities and backgrounds to enjoy the outdoors, and to support a thriving visitor economy.

It also aims to invest in towns’ and villages’ built and historic environment, public spaces and infrastructure while conserving and enhancing the area’s special landscape. The Park’s convener, James Stuart (pictured), said: “The focus is on big priorities for action that are most likely to make a lasting difference to the area, its communities, the people who visit and to the Scottish economy. “This is an exciting time for the National Park and we want people to get involved in planning the

future of the area by telling us what they think of the vision set out in this draft plan.” Gordon Watson, Chief Executive of Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park, said: “There is already some great work being undertaken within the National Park to provide young people with opportunities to gain valuable skills and experience to support their future employment. “We are confident that this along with measures to address the lack of affordable housing options and efforts to protect and enhance local services and infrastructure, will ensure a bright future for young people living and working within the National Park.” To read the draft National Park Partnership Plan 2018-2023 and respond to the consultation go to www.lochlomond-trossachs.org/NPPP.

waLK heaDs to DrYMen The Walk in the Park project is beginning the month of May by putting best foot forward – with the launch of a new walk in Drymen. The scheme delivers health walks in the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, and aims to introduce people recovering from illness - or those who have experienced long periods of inactivity -.back into exercise. Having built up a series of wellestablished walks in other areas it’s reckoned the classic woodland terrain of Drymen must be next on the list. Spokeswoman Fran Crumley said:”Through the project we aim to increase the awareness of the benefits of being physically active as well as encouraging more people to become active and stay active through walking. “The weekly health walks were established to create a supportive

environment for people to start to enjoy the social and health benefits of being physically active.” The project currently has four park locations - Balloch, Aberfoyle, Callander and Killin – and now the group is launching a new weekly walk on a Thursday morning in Drymen. Everyone with an interest in what sounds a gentle way of getting back to fitness is welcome to enjoy the health walk in Drymen on Thursday. May 4, meeting outside The Winnock Hotel (village square) at 10.20am. There’s no need to book, and all you have to do is simply turn up and join in – all the walks aim to be accessible and interesting for everyone. They last about 45 minutes, have good walking surfaces, and can

be around the town or out in the countryside – and all walks are led by trained volunteer walk leaders. For more information contact Fran, Lomond Walk in the Park Coordinator, on 07747 038008 or email fran.crumley@lochlomondtrossachs.org You can find out more about the scheme by visiting the group’s website at www.trustinthepark. org/walk-in-the-park

Show not to be missed Strathendrick Pipe Band, a Heavy Horses display, children’s events and a fancy dress tug o’ war are just some examples of the sort of entertainment on offer – along with plenty of food and drink stalls, a funfair, local bands, and very much more besides.

TO LET Beechwood Estate

Alexandria

The show was founded the year after the Battle of Waterloo, and after last year’s spectacular bicentenary event this superb local show is about to enter its third century.

With everything from riding events to judging of the cutest animals to be found in a paddock anywhere the fantastic show run by Strathendrick Agricultural Society is unique. All the fun of the farm is there, from vintage tractors to prized livestock, together with all the brilliant aspects of country life which go with the territory – we’re thinking particularly of that Great Drymen Bake-off contest. Entries to that popular contest will be judged at 2pm on the day, and of course that’s just one

of the highlights of an actionpacked event which is mainly but not exclusively about the array of agricultural animal life on display – from show jumping to sheepshearing. This year’s event is on Saturday, May 27, from 9am till early evening, and will take place at the easy to find Drymen Show Field at Drymen Bridge.

More than just a gala occasion, it’s a serious annual competitive get-together for the farming community, who stand to gain prestigious awards after rigorous judging. But at the same time you don’t need to know anything about farming or country life at all to enjoy what promises set to be a wonderful day out. Admission is £8 for adults, £5 for senior citizens and juniors 5 to 15, under-fives free; and a family pass for two adults and two children is £25.
