WHO IS YOUR COMMUNITY HERO? Does someone in your area work tirelessly on behalf of the local community? If so the team organising this month’s search for the Citizen of the Year want to hear from you. The Civic Awards celebrate residents who make a significant contribution to improving people’s lives, and local heroes can be nominated across five categories and claim the titles of Arts and Culture Champion, Sports Champion, Community/ Voluntary Champion (Individual), Community/Voluntary Champion (Team) and Youth Champion. From this shortlist, Provost William Hendrie will select one overall winner who will be named West Dunbartonshire’s Citizen of the Year. He said: “The Provost’s Civic Awards are a great way to publicly thank the many people in our communities who are doing fantastic work that often goes unnoticed - a great opportunity for me to publically acknowledge and thank our residents who go that extra mile”. He added: “I know we have so many worthy residents who

deserve recognition for the great work they do, and it’s now up to the public to nominate them and give them the recognition they thoroughly deserve”. The winners will be celebrated at an awards dinner in August, have their names added to the boards at Clydebank Town Hall, and will be guests of the Provost at the Queen's annual garden party at Holyrood Palace. Nominations can be made online at www.provostawards.com or by completing the nomination forms available from council buildings, libraries, GP surgeries, leisure centres and one stop shops. Here is a brief resumé of the categories:Arts and Culture Champion The nominee will work in the arts in a voluntary or professional capacity, and be involved in drama, dance, music, literature, the visual arts, etc, and may be a skilled organiser of projects.

NEW SCHOOL: The school will be built for the modern curriculum with state-of-the-art equipment

It may have seemed like a long time coming, but Bellsmyre’s brand new £25million Our Lady and St Patrick’s High School is now a reality, bringing with it a new era in local education. But at the superb recent official opening ceremony education convener Karen Conaghan made it clear that the real strength of the place is its staff and pupils. She probably knows what she is talking about, as she is both a former pupil of Notre Dame and also an OLSP parent. She said: “Since opening in October the new Our Lady and St Patrick’s High School has

transformed the educational experiences of the 1,000 young people who attend. “This is a high-performing school which has a history of attainment and the building offers the perfect environment to continue that success. “Classrooms are fully furnished with modern state-of-the-art equipment with large break-out spaces to facilitate innovative

Guests were shown a video explaining how Notre Dame and St Patrick’s came together to create Our Lady and St Patrick’s High School. Head teacher, Christopher Smith said: “Our Lady and St Patrick’s is not only a school, it is a whole community. We are immensely proud of our history and heritage and the opening of this new build marked the next chapter in our journey. “Pupils and staff are delighted with the design and quality of the school and are making the most of the new learning environments and facilities. “This is a school built for the modern curriculum and we are looking forward to the future and supporting many more young people to achieve all that they can.”

AGGREKO BOOST FOR BURGH aspirations for an energyefficient future. Quite apart from the ethical goal of avoiding energy waste the cut to industry overheads is a laudable objective in its own right.

NEW JOBS: A couple of dozen new jobs are to be created to support the Technology Project

Amid so much doom and gloom elsewhere on the jobs front in Scotland comes the welcome news that multinational Aggreko is bringing a couple of dozen new jobs to Dumbarton to support its Future Technology Project. It may not be a surge of mass employment, but besides the actual number of new posts said to be on the cards this development also brings with it a welcome added focus on Dumbarton as a skilled base in the massively-important renewables sector – in other words it’s a plum acquisition that could lead to still greater things. To underline its importance,

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon reportedly described the development as “hugely encouraging”, because the agenda – concentrating on sophisticated ways of cutting the cost of energy use, for example through waste heat recovery – has huge implications at both domestic and company level. It also chimes neatly with the Scottish Govermnent’s own

solicitors & notaries

The group is reckoned ideally placed to take advantage of an energy market which is currently in the throes of seismic change, as major users of all kinds, whether government, utility or private industry, are casting around for a sound strategic solution to the problems of tomorrow. The pay-off from successfullytrialled scientific ways of tackling age-old problems could be game-changing for an economy pondering uncertain times ahead. The group will develop what could be exciting, field-leading new ways of harvesting energy at its manufacturing and technology plant at Lomondgate. There are already 240 staff at the firm’s Dumbarton base, but this latest development could be seen as the icing on the cake by paving the way for a potentially rich new seam of endeavour.

LOMOND TOURISM Love Loch Lomond is hosting a flagship Marine Tourism Conference for the tourism industry this month at the Lodge on Loch Lomond Hotel in Luss. Next year is Scotland’s Year of Coast and Waters, and this has focused minds on how best to promote destinations with freshwater and marine assets. This is not the first important session of it's kind, but comes at a particularly interesting time as the popularity of seaside, lochside and riverside activities has never been greater. The conference will host a range of expert marine tourism speakers, including keynote speaker Kylie Lethbridge from Australia, and Daniel Steel from Sail Scotland, in the run-up to Scottish Tourism Month. Delegates will hear from people directly engaged in marine and coastal tourism development, ES F TI RE M E AT ES

including infrastructure projects, business engagement, visitor management, and cruise markets. This is reckoned by the organisers to be an opportunity to be ready for global market exposure in 2020, and to develop partnerships for business and consumer benefit across the area. The event (10am to 4pm on May 16) will look at the Loch Lomond area’s regional advantages with a wider Scottish context, and aim to get businesses and operators thinking about products and services to enhance the visitor experience for those engaged in boating and waterrelated activities.

That’s why this month’s outing for the Lennox Heritage Society promises to be a real journey of discovery, as it’s to the Glasgow Museums Resource Centre where so many fabulous exhibits of every imaginable type are kept. It’s a great way of rounding off a season which has featured some brilliant speakers and fascinating lectures. PRINCE BACKS THE ARGYLLS boost the project. In his Appeal Letter, Prince William writes: “The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders Museum needs your help.

Prince William meeting the Argyll Veterans

HRH Prince William has backed the campaign aimed at preserving the memory of a famous regiment in which countless West Dunbartonshire men once served. The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders Museum at Stirling Castle is on a mission to find the £200,000 needed to pay for an exciting project which will honour the Argylls’ achievements in war and peace. By next summer there will be a £4 million pound visitor attraction at the castle, which will also preserve in perpetuity the experiences of soldiers who fought in the Argylls’ many campaigns - including, for example, the Aden emergency and the Korean War.

It will ensure an important chapter in local as well as Scottish history is never forgotten – and that it is remembered with pride.

“This project has already received substantial donations and pledges but we still need to raise more. “We need to ensure that future generations will discover for themselves what we owe to the Argylls’ memory. “This ambitious project will ensure that this great historical legacy will survive, engaging and educating the visitors of tomorrow.”

The appeal, under Prince William’s patronage, is named The Thin Red Line after the regiment’s famous stand against Russian cavalry during the 1854 Battle of Balaklava in the Crimean War.

The Appeal is asking well-wishers to organise sponsored fundraising events and activities, and to contribute donations large or small. Supporters of the project include former Colour Sergeant Adam McKenzie (90), who joined the regiment in 1945 and served for 35 years, fighting in Palestine, Korea and Aden.

Local volunteers from the regimental heartland are already organising teams and sponsored events for fundraising activities to

He said “Without the Argylls’ Museum the history will be lost as the Argylls no longer exist as a regiment in their own right”.

TRACK LAPS

A mum-of-two from Balloch triumphed in her first ultra track race after running nonstop for 12 hours around a sports stadium. Karen Wallace ran an incredible 277 laps of a 400m track at the race in West Sussex to reach a distance of 68.9 mile (110.95km). That is similar to running Balloch to Edinburgh. The race in April started at 5pm and she won the Crawley AIM Charity 12 hour race by three laps. Karen reports that when the going got tough she thought about running each lap for her sons. She said: “I have run ultra races before but they have been on trails and not round and round a track. It was very tough and I just had to focus on completing lap after lap. “I suffered with stomach cramps almost from the start and running through the night made this worse.” With three hours to go, Karen was told she was the leading lady by just one lap. She said: “I had to

dig deep and I started to think about running one lap for my son, Will, and then the next for my other son, Alex. This helped to keep me going. I focused on what they would think when I made it to the finish line.” In fact, Will and Alex were delighted when Karen, 41, told them she was the winning lady. She said: “Being able to tell them I had won was pretty amazing.” At the 24-hour race held on the same day, another Scottish runner Grant MacDonald, from Glasgow, was also victorious.

He set a new course record of 145.2 miles (233.73km). Karen was sure she would not do another track ultra race when she finished but now she is not so sure. She said: “If you asked me on the day I said never, ever, ever. I was in tatters. But now reflecting, maybe I’ll try a 24-hour race on the track.”

West Dunbartonshire Community Foodshare recently celebrated the efforts of everyone who has contributed during its first five years in operation, during which time the supplies of free food made available to those struggling has often made a critical difference. Most would agree it would be great if that effort simply wasn’t needed, but with Britain still deep in the grip of austerity the reality for many local people is that problems ranging from zero hours contracts and redundancy to problems with benefits mean the family budget sums often cannot add up. That applies not only to food, of

course, but to essentials like new school uniforms – which is why the Rotary Club of Dumbarton’s recent donation is particularly welcome. It recently donated £3,000 to the Foodshare’s school uniform bank, with the funds coming from the total raised at the annual charity dinner staged at Dumbarton Football Club

Last year no less than 189 local children were clothed for school by the foodshare team, whose efforts also include food provision, school holiday brunch bags, and more recently cooking and growing. Add all the resources collected and channeled to local families by foodshare and it’s easy to see that a great many people would be much worse off were it not for volunteers’ commitment and the generosity of their neighbours. Dumbarton Rotary President, Gordon Craig said: “The Rotary Club of Dumbarton is proud to be able to support such a worthwhile cause”. He is pictured handing over a giant cheque for £3,000 to Claire Coyle and Caroline Ross of West Dunbartonshire Community Foodshare – School Uniform Bank. D T S ES EE BE IC NT PRRA A

change very quickly, and you’re strongly advised to heed any warning signs which may appear on the Loch shore in weeks to come. The algae blooms can make the water become green, blue-green or greenish brown and several species can produce musty, earthy or grassy odours, and can also cause foaming on the shoreline.

AVOID THE ALGAE: The Blue algae can be toxic to dogs and other animals and create rashes on humans

The onset of better weather has brought with it a very familiar problem for Loch Lomond, and the National Park has been doing its best to get the word out via website and on social media. Blue algae is a menace on several of Scotland’s best known scenic attractions - for example Linlithgow Loch, usually a beautiful spot, also suffers – and while there’s nothing to be alarmed about if you recognise the dangers you really have to ensure you “avoid it like the plague” if you’re in a boat, or

swimming. Blue-green algae can produce toxins that can kill dogs and other animals. In humans it can cause rashes after skin contact and illnesses if swallowed. So while at time of going to press there hasn’t been a local outbreak yet that could easily

The National Park’s spokesperson says: “We are often asked to advise when the warning is over. “However this is difficult to predict, because blue green algae blooms can form on the water and dissipate again within hours or days, depending on the weather and the water temperature.

Unit 6, Darleith Road Lomond Industrial Estate, Alexandria

“The blooms normally form in warm still water, so they can form on a still morning around sheltered shore areas, but then get broken up by rain or waves if the wind picks up. ”Due to this changeful nature of blue green algae blooms we recommend people err on the side of caution if they know there has been a warning in recent days.”

DRYMEN SHOWTIME AGAIN SHOWTIME: The drymen show is back on the 26th of May with fun and games for all the family

The big fun outdoor event within easy range of home this month is the Drymen Show on Saturday, May 26, at Drymen Show Field, Drymen Bridge, which has a spectacular new addition. Equine stunt team Les Amis d'Onno are famous for their Cossack-style horsemanship, with daredevil skills and full speed trick riding – not to mention horse archery. They’re one of the eye-catching events in the main arena, but of course there are many more. While for many visitors the galastyle fun of the show is the most important element – particularly

for families – it’s also a brilliant agricultural contest on many levels, from livestock to home baking. More than just a gala occasion, it’s a serious annual competitive get-together for the farming community, who stand to gain prestigious awards after rigorous judging. But at the same time you don’t need to know anything

about farming or country life at all to enjoy what promises to be a wonderful day out. All the fun of the farm is there, from vintage tractors to some of the cutest animals to be found in a paddock anywhere, together with all the brilliant aspects of country life which go with the territory – we’re thinking particularly of that Drymen Bake-off contest. Visitors can enjoy helicopter rides, the Pets Tent (and its Pet Competition) and Learning Zone, where they can meet various animals and experts in agriculture and livestock. Kids and families will enjoy the funfair, trade stands and this year's main ring attractions including terrier racing, Strathendrick Rugby Club mini rugby demonstration and children's races.

May 2018 | What's Up Doc?

MAUREEN JOINS LOCAL KIRK The Church of Scotland’s new pastoral assistant in the three Dumbarton congregations (Riverside Parish, West Kirk and Dumbarton St Andrew's) has “evacuation from a war zone” on her very busy cv. Maureen Burke (we learn via Riverside Church) qualified as a psychiatric nurse and worked with the health board for a spell before working overseas – first in the West Indies and then in Erbil, Iraq.

with Dr Nick Dunn

This month: GOING WITH THE FLOW... Being in the heart disease capital of Europe, we need all the help we can get to reduce the risks of heart attack and stroke, the main causes of death and disability in Scotland. Risks are increased by high blood pressure, smoking, diabetes, obesity and high cholesterol.

It was from there that she had to be taken to safety ahead of the murderous terrorist forces of the so-called Islamic State, which must have been a traumatic and impossible to forget experience. The church has made it clear she is warmly welcomed in Dumbarton, where by contrast the dismal weather of the first part of the year has been the most pressing concern for most of us. She is currently a Family Support Worker with Carnwadric WIN Project project (run by Carnwadric Church of Scotland), and as well

What's Up Doc?

as psychiatric nursing, she has qualifications in Guidance and Counselling (with a minor in Theology), and in Management in Health and Social Care – and is currently doing a Masters degree in Urban Theology. She is a member of Whiteinch Church of Scotland in Glasgow.

Fortunately drugs called statins are available which lessen blood vessel narrowing and blockage in the heart and the brain, by lowering cholesterol levels, and dampening inflammation in blood vessels. There has been some negative publicity surrounding these drugs, and people can be

sceptical when they are recommended. Although they can cause side effects such as muscle pains, nausea or liver or kidney problems, these are rare, with only 1 in 10,000 people likely to get a serious side-effect. There is good evidence that statins are very effective in reducing the risk of stroke and heart problems by protecting blood flow and can be a simple way to help keep you well for longer. There are five different types of statin, and your doctor can offer alternatives if you have side-effects. For the rest of us, prevention is better than cure, so look after yourself with regular exercise and a healthy diet!

Once you have reached the age of sixteen you are considered to be an adult and have full legal capacity to manage your own affairs. However, the Age of Legal Capacity (Scotland) Act 1991 provides that a person under the age of sixteen has legal capacity to instruct their own solicitor to represent their interests in pursuing or defending any civil proceedings, so long as they have a general understanding as to what it means to do so. It is generally accepted that a person of twelve years of age or more is of sufficient age and maturity to have such understanding.

20 | To advertise call Caroline or Debbie now on 01389 717035

There is no automatic presumption that a child under twelve does not have appropriate understanding and therefore a solicitor may accept instructions from a child under that age in circumstances where they are satisfied that the relevant child has the necessary maturity. Legal Aid can be made available to a child seeking to instruct a solicitor. Their financial eligibility is usually based on their parent’s financial resources. However, in the event they have a contrary position to their parents, then they may apply for Legal Aid without having to provide that information.

Local News | May 2018

LOCAL ALLOTMENT WATERBORNE If you missed the latest Growing West Dunbartonshire (GWD) event in Dumbarton, don’t worry – the concept has well and truly (pardon the pun) taken root with a growing band of enthusiastic local DIY food growers, and you can catch one of the next crop of gettogethers. GWD is a collection of local allotment and garden groups who actively promote local food growing in their communities and promote participation in the area’s excellent array of growing spaces. They meet every month to encourage people to share experiences and skills. They can be people who love gardening, and perhaps enjoy a mixture of “normal” growing

EXPLORATION

– rose beds, etc – and planting vegetables or herbs, and others who are more concerned with the practical advantages of turning otherwise unproductive ground into a low-cost resource in which to grow healthy “home grown” produce. In either case being able to meet up with people who have already gained some expertise, no doubt with the usual pitfalls along the way, is possibly the best kind of introduction to the subject. The GWD events during the year will allow local groups to participate in allotment and garden activities, share information and sample some of the produce grown in our communities.

Cruise Loch Lomond has been back in business for the main tourism season for a few weeks now, with starting points ranging from Iversnaid, Rowardennan, Luss and Balmaha. If you haven’t used it before now’s the ideal time to check out how a boat trip could have the makings of a great early summer family day out. The service has been gaining popularity year on year, giving people easy access to places and experiences that previously weren’t a feasible option in the course of a single day.

ROCK OF AGES: The exciting historical weekend returns to Dumbarton Rock for the fourth year running

Visitors are invited to an exciting historical weekend that takes place next month at the foot of Dumbarton Rock below the castle. The fourth annual The Rock of Ages aims to bring to life Scottish history, including the Vikings and ancient Romans, as well as the Medieval and Renaissance periods. This year there will be special exhibitions to mark the centenary of the end of World War 1 and the year when the suffragette movement secured voting rights for women.

The event on June 9 and 10 is organised by Historic Environment Scotland. A spokesperson said: “The Rock of Ages 2018 will celebrate the rich tapestry of west coast history and this year there will be mock WW1 trenches installed so that visitors can experience what life was like for the soldiers of the Western Front, which was fought using trench warfare.”

The spokesperson added: “In addition, the exhibition will feature costumed re-enactors who will recount stories from the frontline. “Further costumed actors will also depict the suffragettes, and others will be dressed as Mary Queen of Scots, who sailed to France from Dumbarton Castle as a child in 1548, with her mother Mary of Guise. The weekend looks set to be another exciting one for visitors.” Last year, 2,500 visitors attended the The Rock of Ages and numbers are expected to be matched in June. BALLOCH TOWER IS DITCHED arguments over whether this plan should go ahead will only begin in earnest once people – including heritage and conservation groups – have had a chance to pore over the detail.

A formal planning application for the could-be Flamingo Land holiday park planned for Balloch’s West Riverside is due to be lodged any day now – apparently minus the original idea of building a 100ft viewing tower on the site. That particular idea would, if ever passed, have created a dominating feature many would have considered an “Isengard”style blot on the landscape, but now seems to be off the menu for good. Meanwhile the company concerned has been at pains to stress the Balloch site has inspired a very different vision from the

Some argue Loch Lomond is already over-developed, while against that it’s argued that “sustainable tourism” is the way to go.

One thing is certain, however, and that is the company involved in Flamingo Land is clearly prepared to frame its plans in a way calculated to tick the right boxes with the Park authorities However after many months of comment and controversy the real and other interested parties.

sort of park it runs in Yorkshire, where fun park amusement rides are a conspicuous draw. From early reports it seems to be conscientiously focusing on wildlife and conservation themes, along with what could be an elaborate woodland walkway scheme.

We can expect a major focus on accommodation, and probably of a type designed to fill a gap in the local market – glamping pods might be a popular addition, for example. However almost regardless of what the site may contain some of the main arguments are likely to be in terms of pressure on local roads, and of the threat of increased noise and nuisance due to greater volumes of people arriving in an area which is already “heaving” in peak season.
