WHEN THE CLYDE WAS RED This year marks the centenary of the Clydeside upheaval some feared would lead to a full-scale Bolshevik revolution – a prospect others looked forward to with eager anticipation. So there could hardly be a more appropriate theme for a talk at this month’s West Dunbartonshire Booked! Festival than arguably the greatest of the Red Clydesiders – John Maclean.
itself this year with a whole host of fascinating lectures and events – for example featuring author Alan Parks, whose work has been compared to that of the late, great William McIlvanney.
it, while journalist and author Madeleine Bunting will explain the background to her debut novel Island Song, which explores the experiences of Channel Islanders during the Nazi occupation.
This larger than life figure was imprisoned three times during his struggle against what he saw as the oppressive forces of capitalism, was name-checked by Lenin, no less, and remains an icon of left wing politics to this day.
Meanwhile Polly Clark, who made a huge impact with her debut novel Larchfield, will be discussing her latest novel, Tiger – and telling her audience about her adventures in Siberia, a vast and still largely untamed region which is home to one of the most exotic and fascinating animals on the planet.
Northern Ireland author Wendy Erskine will read extracts from her short story collection Sweet Home, and Dan Richards will talk about his book Outposts, which looks at our relationship with the wilderness.
In what should be a fascinating talk, Henry Bell will look at the events that shaped the man and his firebrand determination to win workers’ rights, as well as his enduring legacy. In a packed festival running from May 14 to 19, Booked! has excelled
Other events include a workshop run by leading artist Mitch
Miller, who will show how to use illustration and drawing as a method of documenting the world around us. There will also be plenty of local involvement and schools participation in this landmark local festival – which offers the proverbial something for everyone to enjoy. All tickets can be booked at: www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/booked2019-west-dunbartonshire-festival. For further information on timings and venues visit www.west-dunbarton.gov.uk/ booked2019.

VIKINGS WITH A VENGEANCE They burned monasteries and sacked villages, founded a roaring slave trade in Dublin and spread fear and loathing wherever their longships roamed... but were the Vikings as bad as usually portrayed? The fearsome Norsemen will be the star turn at next month’s Rock of Ages event at Dumbarton Castle, with a performance that is certain to stir memories of such cinematic Vikings as Richard Widmark and Kirk Douglas. Rock of Ages is now an established hit in Dumbarton, taking its audience on a roller coaster ride through a turbulent history that stretches from Roman times to
Dumbarton Rock, and were castigated by Saint Patrick, no less, for their slave trading ways. But towards the end of the Viking era it was a somewhat different story.
the Second World War, but this year the theme is heavily pointed towards Scotland’s arguably littleunderstood Norse heritage. The classic image is of bloodthirsty pagans worshipping violent gods, charging up the beach with axe in hand intent on mayhem and slaughter – and, broadly speaking, that’s entirely accurate. They besieged and took
The raids had given way to settlement, and the pagans had become at least nominally Christian – some of their leading lights are actually buried on the holy isle of Iona. By the time the men from their storm-tossed fleet fell victim to a Scottish army at the Battle of Largs in 1265 they had lost their earlier vim, and culturally were little different from the allegedly more civilised people they had once threatened to conquer and enslave. Rock of Ages will explore the very strong but submerged Norse heritage of Scotland over the weekend of June 8 and 9, probably touching on the serious impact the Vikings once made on the West of Scotland and Clydeside, as well as the Hebrides and, especially, the far north – a show not to be missed. You’ll find full details at www. historicenvironment.scot/events.

BLIGHT OF THE LITTERBUG LOUTS We keep hearing about the problem of litter in local beauty spots, but it’s only when somebody does something about it that we get an idea of the true extent of the malaise – and it’s bad.
APPROVED DOMESTIC ELECTRICIAN REQUIRED Excellent bonus scheme • SJIB Rates Send your CV to ledgerwoodselectrical@gmail.com
Staff from the National Park Authority and Argyll and Bute Council with just some of the litter that was found abandoned near the shores of Loch Lomond
In a two day spring clean of a key stretch of the National Park near Luss no less than 124 bags of litter were collected by volunteers, who lifted everything from underwear to bottles and bags filled with unmentionable waste. What is arguably most worrying is that this was at the very start of the season, and not in mid-summer when the Park is at its busiest – begging the question “what on earth will it be like then?” About a third of the bags were filled with cans and plastic bottles which will at least be recycled, but that’s hardly reassuring –
particularly at a time when all sorts of developments guaranteed to bring droves of new visitors to the area are under review. Litter often acts as a beacon for further littering, giving people “permission” to discard more items, so by cleaning up the area, the National Park Authority and the council are hoping – and let’s hope they’re right – that more people will get the message that it simply isn’t acceptable. Failing that, it could be tougher action, especially fines, may have to be stepped up.
QUINN RECYCLING 07711206279
Recently appointed Litter Prevention Manager for the National Park Authority, Nik Turne, said: “The A82 is one of the major routes into and through the National Park, and roadside litter not only creates a negative first impression but it is also dangerous and expensive to clean up. “We’re committed to tackling this issue and by working alongside our partners to take direct action; we want to drive home the message that it’s unacceptable to drop litter anywhere, least of all in a National Park.”

Gill Cairns from Dumbarton Academy Breakfast Club with Dumbarton Rotary Club president Donald Hoey
All Dumbarton Academy pupils can look forward to the best possible start to the day, thanks to a very generous donation of £300 from the Rotary Club of Dumbarton towards their hugely successful free Toast and Breakfast Club. In partnership with Fairshare. org, Dumbarton Academy pupils get donations of bread products and fruit and vegetables that are unsold but still fresh. They are uplifted by school staff volunteers from both Tesco and Waitrose in Helensburgh, and the food is then offered before school and at morning interval
to all pupils in the two Home Economics classrooms - where a bustling and sociable Toast Club takes place every day. It ensures no pupil, regardless of background, is learning on an empty stomach or going hungry. Anywhere up to a hundred pupils a day benefit from the initiative, and in doing so help to reduce Est 1955

If you are in the area that day, feel free to pop in and for that day only, McArthur Stanton are offering a discounted simple Will from as little as £75 + VAT. funeral arrangements? Of course it is also the opportunity for you to make clear instructions as to how you wish your property and possessions to be dispersed. Making a Will can save your family time, stress and money in carrying out your wishes. To discuss making a Will or indeed any other legal matter with one of their experienced solicitors, feel free to pop in on 18th May, or contact us on 01389 762266 or at www.mcarthurstanton.co.uk.

The School and Parents’ Council has provided toasters and freezers to help store the food, and money from Dumbarton Rotary will be used to purchase jam and spreads to use on the bread products. No pupil needs to be embarrassed at the idea of using the Club because everyone is equally welcome, and many staff members are volunteering to give up their interval to help keep things tidy and to socialise over a piece of toast with pupils. Home Economics teachers Gill Cairns and Carol Cook have passed on a massive thank you to Dumbarton Rotary on behalf of Dumbarton Academy for their generous donation. AWARDS NIGHT
LOOMS FOR LOCAL FIRMS
Clyde Training won last year's Dunbartonshire Chamber Business of the Year Award
Several local companies are in the running for honours at this year’s West Dunbartonshire Working4Business Awards, with a short list now under active consideration after a thorough initial judging process. The winners will be announced at a Gala Dinner on Friday, May 17th at Clydebank Town Hall, hosted by actress and comedian Karen Dunbar. Tickets are on sale now for this event and demand is said to be high, so if you have an interest book early to avoid disappointment. For information on tickets, contact awards@entourageuk.com or telephone 0141 887 6181.
LOCH SWIM IS HIGH AND DRY

It’s been a riproaring success for several years on the trot now, but the Great Scottish Swim – for reasons which have not been made completely clear – won’t be taking place on Loch Lomond this year. The National Park people are naturally disappointed, pointing out that over the past five years the event has grown in popularity, gaining support not only from contestants but also the local community. The Park Authority states: “Hosting the Great Scottish Swim and the European Championships Open Water Swimming in 2018 has proven that Loch Lomond is a fantastic sporting venue. “We hope this will attract other open water swimming events and we are exploring options to attract other operators. “In particular, with next year being Scotland’s Year of Coasts and

Waters, we very much hope to see a similar swimming event being staged at Loch Lomond”. There are several undoubtedly great venues for events of this calibre around the UK, but a common refrain for many of the (until now) regular attendees at the Loch Lomond event has been that nowhere else can match it in terms of natural beauty and sense of location. Hopefully it won’t be too long before an event of similar importance comes on board with a new proposal that can stay the distance.

‘NEW’ LIBRARY IS A SUCCESS The junior section at Alexandria Library has had a makeover – but what do the customers think? Pupils from Christie Park Primary and children from St Mary’s Early Learning and Childcare Centre visited the branch to see all the changes for themselves. The youngsters seem to love the bright and welcoming décor, with its colourful pictures of animals on the walls, while the extensive range of children’s books are now showcased in mini bookcases designed to keep young readers occupied as their parents browse the shelves or use the public computers. Improvements include modern information boards throughout, inspirational quotes and historic photographs adorn the walls and shelf edges, while new display cases have been produced to show off the latest books in stock. Visitors can also enjoy a hot drink in the newly designed seating area, with its comfortable chairs, while reading the daily newspapers and catching up with the news.

There are display boards flagging up council information, and a community board where local activities and events are advertised. Feedback from visitors to branch included “the archive black and white photos of the area are fantastic. They have provided a real talking point and brought lots of memories flooding back” and “I really like the quotes from famous authors on the wall. They are really inspiring and they encourage you to want to read the books they are from”.
Claire Baillie, library coordinator, at Balloch and Alexandria, said: “It is great to see the completion of the works and the feedback from visitors has been very positive. “The brighter signage and display boards giving information on new books makes it very easy to see the new titles in the branch. “The overall look of library is very vibrant and is a lovely working environment for us all – we are all very excited for the future of Alexandria library.”

The skirl of the great Highland war pipes steadied the ranks of the Thin Red Line at Balaklava. Then three years later told the desperate men, women and children in a beleaguered Indian fortress that deliverance had finally, miraculously arrived. Now the museum of the regiment in which countless West Dunbartonshire men once served has launched an appeal to repair what may just be the most famous set of bagpipes still in existence. At Lucknow in the terrible Indian Mutiny, or as it is now often called the First Indian War of Independence, a British garrison, including its families, seemed certain to fall after a long and bitter siege by Indian insurgents. Wholesale massacre seemed inevitable. Just as all seemed lost the strains of the pipes, played by Pipe Major John MacLeod, could be heard in the distance – the Relief of Lucknow, under the 64-yearold Sir Colin Campbell, hero of Balaklava, was underway. The 93rd Highlanders, those

Oh, they listened, looked, and waited, Till their hope became despair; And the sobs of low bewailing Filled the pauses of their prayer. Then up spake a Scottish maiden, With her ear unto the ground: “Dinna ye hear it?- dinna ye hear it? “The pipes o’ Havelock sound!”
Now those actual bagpipes are in the care of the museum, but are in bad need of restoration – the
It’s a fair sum at a time of national austerity, but on the other hand this unique musical instrument represents an immortal icon of Scotland’s martial story – and hopefully donations from those able to invest in our heritage will be forthcoming. The Argylls’ museum in Stirling Castle is currently undergoing a massive transformation, ahead of this year’s major relaunch as a landmark visitor attraction of national significance – and more on that in a future edition.

perfect solution may be within reach, courtesy of property agent Galbraith. Currently on the market is Torrinch Island on Loch Lomond, “completely untouched and unspoiled for generations” and “a stunning oasis that has benefited from its own natural regeneration”. So far as we know nobody has ever lived there and it’s largely covered in trees, but as a niche buy for somebody with an interest in the natural world – and that might be a wildlife or botanical organisation – it could be an interesting asset. Depending on various permissions being granted it could also serve as a base for anglers, as there are excellent fishing opportunities nearby for salmon, sea trout, brown trout

What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn
This month: GOOD GRIEF…
VALE ACADEMY’S TOP MARK It’s not exactly the same as an old-fashioned report card, but in some ways the effect can be similar – and it’s certainly important. We’re talking about a recent inspection by Education Scotland of the Vale of Leven Academy, where among many positive points perhaps the most salient was the praise heaped on the school’s head teacher and his staff for driving effective and progressive change.
of vocational pathways to meet the individual needs and aspirations of young people.
Pupils’ wellbeing and efforts to ensure equality and inclusion were among the particular strengths identified.
“Under his guidance, teachers and pupils are being encouraged and motivated to achieve their best at the school.
In particular inspectors noted the commitment of staff who offer a range of groups and clubs outwith the classroom.
“I am also pleased to see the positive comments on the great partnership work which is helping our young people plan for their future and go on to a positive destination when they leave school.”
The report also highlights the same level of commitment in the ongoing effort to develop a range
Education convener Karen Conaghan said: “Inspectors have rightly highlighted the positive impact the head teacher is having with both his staff and pupils.

When people suffer loss, such as death in the family, failed relationship or job loss, they often experience grief as a range of emotions. They may go to the doctor, worried that they are having difficulty coping, or are unwell. There are five stages of grief. When this is explained, it can help reassure that the reaction is normal, and time may be all that is required. These stages are Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression and Acceptance. Often people are initially numb and struggle to accept what has happened. This can act as a bit of a “shock-absorber”. Anger may be directed either

at the person who has gone or others, and bargaining can take the form of “what if” questions in our minds. People are often depressed for a period of time after a loss, and this is normal. It can come with hopelessness and can last for months, but finally acceptance can allow people to get back to some normality, and while not replacing what has been lost, helps people rebuild their lives. Loss is something we all have to face at some point, so understanding the normal reactions to this can help to make sense of emotions at difficult times!

This month: CHILDREN’S HEARING…
CLAIM FOR RAIL DELAYS, SAYS JACKIE Dumbarton MSP Jackie Baillie, is encouraging rail passengers to claim for delays and cancellations, as figures show refunds given to rail passengers because of severe delays or cancellations have soared across Scotland. Passengers who have been delayed by 30 minutes or more can claim some or all of their fare back under ScotRail’s Delay Repay scheme. Her call comes amid disquiet over the recent record of train arrivals in West Dunbartonshire and neighbouring Helensburgh. Just 56 per cent of trains arrived on time at Dumbarton Central, 48 per cent at Balloch between March 3 and 31 this year.
In the year 2017 –2018 there were 13,240 children referred to the Scottish Children’s Reporter Administration (SCRA). They are the body responsible for Children’ Reporters and the Hearing, also commonly referred to as the panel, system. The main function of the Children’s Reporter is to receive referrals from others who may have concerns regarding a child or young person. The Reporter must then consider whether there is a requirement for some form of compulsory intervention and, if so, draft the grounds for referral. The Reporter may gather information from social work, school, health care providers or other relevant bodies. A hearing will then take place to allow the parents, child and any relevant persons to decide whether
20 | To advertise call Ryan or Debbie now on 01389 717035
they accept or deny the grounds. In the event the grounds are denied or, as is quite common, the child is too young to understand, then the grounds are referred to the local sheriff court for determination. The Reporter is responsible for progressing the court hearings on behalf of the SCRA. The grounds will either be determined to be established or not. If they are not, then that is the end of the process. In the event grounds are established then the matter is returned to the SCRA Hearing system for the next step in the process. This process can have huge significant legal consequences and it is therefore essential that people are aware that they are entitled to seek legal advice and have a representative at these hearings. Legal Aid may also be available.

FUN RUN THAT’S FINE FOR KIDS The Loch Lomond 10k is next month’s big local event, and this year there’s to be a repeat of the Fun Run event to go alongside it – open to all ages from tiny tot to primary seven. The event will take place in the Moss O’ Balloch site, and everyone taking part will have the pride and satisfaction of finishing with a triumphant flourish through the 10k gantry. Starting at 9am on June 22nd the event will see entrants setting off in phased waves, with the P7 kids going first. Babies can take part too, but unsurprisingly will be competing in their own accompanied buggies! For the older age groups the course distance is around a mile, which is challenging enough, while for the younger set there’s a shorter route. We’re told the whole route is
both heavily marshalled and completely off road, and that the main idea is “all about having fun and inspiring our young people to get fit and stay active!”. Many taking part will already have registered with their school, and don’t have to do so again, while any still to sign up can register at the West Dunbartonshire Leisure gazebo between 8am and 8.45am on the day – it costs £2 to take part.

STARS LINE UP AT HEAD OF RECORD FIELD FOR BABCOCK 10K SERIES Entries for the Babcock 10k Series are surging towards 1800 runners with less than a fortnight to go to the first race, the Babcock Helensburgh 10k on Thursday May 9th at 7.30pm. Meanwhile the elite field at the front end of the race is the best it has been since the inception of the series nearly forty years ago. Recently crowned Scottish CrossCountry champion, Adam Craig from Inverclyde is using the series to tune up for a big attack on his personal best for 10,000m in the ‘Night of the Pb’s’ at London’s Parliament Hill Fields, where his target is a sub 28:30 time. Craig will line up in all three races, Dumbarton follows Helensburgh on May 16th and Shettleston brings the series to a climactic conclusion on Glasgow Green, on Sunday May 26th. Craig has recruited his Scottish team mate, Luke Traynor from Giffnock North to go head to head with him in the Babcock Dumbarton 10k as they chase a time in the low 29 minute range. Traynor recently represented GB in the World Cross Country Championships in Aarhaus, Denmark and came 12th in America’s third
biggest race, the Cooper Bridge River Run in 30:11. The course record is currently 29:40 held by Eritrean international Tewelde Mengisteab from Shettleston Harriers and dates back to 2009. Meanwhile Garscube’s Katie White is busily preparing to defend her three victories of last year and recently finished sixth in the Scottish Cross-Country Championships, just behind last year’s series runner up Elspeth Curran from Kilbarchan who was fourth.
Sale’s GB international, Sonia Samuels, who lives in Loughborough will head North for the Dumbarton race with her husband Nick who is a 30:10 10k man and current European Biathlon Champion, the combined running and cycling discipline. Samuels represented Team GB in the Rio Olympic Marathon in 2016 and was fifth in the 10,000m on Australia’s Gold Coast in the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Series Chair and Helensburgh
Race Director, Kevin Johnson is delighted to have so many internationals in the line up this year. “We would have to go back twenty years to the likes of the Vale’s Glen Stewart to find athletes of the current calibre featuring in the series. The Babcock 10k Series is likely to produce some of the fastest times in Scotland this year and perhaps the UK.” To enter just visit entrycentral. com.
Mortgage Matters:
Brexit and Your Mortgage
JOHN DUFF
Is it time to fix your mortgage rate? With the current level of uncertainty, many homeowners are now looking to fix their mortgage rate for the next three to five years against any potential interest rate rises which could occur as a result of Brexit.
JOINERS/BUILDERS LTD
Jayne Daly Mortgage Advisor
Many borrowers are now drifting away from the traditional 2-year fixed term rate deals as they feel that they won’t provide them with enough security during these unpredictable times. If all this speculation concerns you, you could consider re-mortgaging and moving to a longer term fixed-rate mortgage.
Is a Fixed rate deal right for you? Fixed rate mortgages are not suitable for everyone. If your circumstances are likely to change in the short term, careful consideration should be taken before making a final decision as these deals often come with early repayment charges. If interest rates were to fall after Brexit, you could find yourself paying more than you need to. If you want to take advantage of any potential rate reductions and if you are willing to take the risk should rates go up, then it may be worthwhile considering a tracker rate. If you are looking for mortgage advice that you can trust, call us today on 0141 956 4088 / 0800 011 2322 or visit us at www.themortgageadviceservice.co.uk

IT’S SHOWTIME AT DRYMEN! If there is one truly stand-out experience you shouldn’t miss in early summer it’s the annual Drymen Show – a truly ancient fixture which nevertheless keeps gets even better every year. Founded just after the Napoleonic Wars it’s run by the Strathendrick Agricultural Association, and is both a celebration of everything to do with prime livestock and a prestigious regional contest among experts who are among the best in the business. But it’s also a fabulous family day out, with everything on offer from games and craft stalls to live entertainment, dancing, and more – a real, traditional local spectacular which brings together
an astonishing array of talent in a “summer gala” atmosphere of fun and conviviality. It’s at the Drymen show field on Saturday, May 25, with a packed programme which begins with the judging of cattle and heavy horses at 9.30am and continues non stop through a rolling feast of brilliant attractions – the antics of the Drakes of Hazard are a mustsee, and of course so is the main parade and prizegiving at 2pm. Vintage tractors, a star quality
baking contest, fancy dress horse and rider contest and children’s fun races are also among the highlights on this year’s actionpacked show agenda. Also in the “don’t miss” category is the Loch Lomond Ukelele Orchestra, made up of 50 different local people who together make some splendid music; local Highland Dancer Carla Munn, champion Pipe Major Donald MacKenzie of MacKenzie Bagpiping and local bands Joe and the Ocajonals and Hot Ratz. Don’t forget the funfair, the magnificent birds of prey, the pet tents (always a massive hit), the trade stands and – for those who want an aerial view of proceedings – the option of a helicopter ride too. This is one of those rare events which seems to manage effortlessly to cram a whole festival into a single day’s colourful, easygoing but wellorganised entertainment, and is rightly seen as one of the finest of a small, elite band of agricultural shows in Scotland. VALE IT WORKSHOP Alexandria Library is hosting computer drop-in workshops where you can simply turn up without booking and ask a trainer for advice on a variety of computer-related issues. It could be a problem with your laptop, Android tablet or iPad, or maybe you need help trying to configure a particular app or programme. It’s a useful and uncomplicated way of sorting IT niggles that can take up time and test patience, and a great example of how the long-established library is adapting its services to meet the needs of a modern audience. The workshops run from 1.30pm to 4.30pm at the library.

Over the years this has evolved from a single team member doing a series of sponsored runs to a circumnavigation of Loch Lomond, cycling, running and canoeing, called the Loch Lomond Challenge.
Dave Watson an Alexandria policeman and a member of the Police Scotland Mountain Rescue team said “Last year we changed the format to a duathlon called The Arrochar Cross. This involves a half marathon run through the

On the weekend of May 3 and 4 Children’s Hospices Across Scotland (CHAS), which runs Robin House in Balloch, is asking sci-fi and fantasy fans to don their favourite geeky t-shirt on the day and donate £2 to the charity by calling 0141 779 6180 or visiting www.chas.org.uk/donate.
