VISITOR BOOST FROM MOVIE This month sees the launch of the biggest movie ever filmed in Scotland – and with it the likelihood of a major new surge in visitor tourism to Dumbarton and the surrounding area. Outlaw King, starring Chris Pine as Robert the Bruce, is a blockbuster epic tracing the story of how King Robert – who had huge associations with the Burgh, and latterly lived in a mansion in Cardross – battled his way from being a hunted fugitive to defeat the most powerful army in Christendom and regain Scotland’s independence.
Unlike that movie, however, Outlaw King is rooted firmly in history, and is crammed with accurate period detail. According to normally reliable reports the little-told story of King Robert’s association with Dumbarton will be flagged up in a new visitor trail covering the main locations used in the movie, which was filmed entirely in Scotland. However besides sites which include, for example, Linlithgow Palace and Doune Castle, the latest HES trail will also feature places – not necessarily in the movie – which are pivotal to the stirring story of the Wars of Independence… and that means Dumbarton. This is said to be likely to include promotion by main tourism body Visit Scotland, and in local terms may focus on the upgrading of
the area around St Serf’s Church in Dumbarton’s Levengrove Park. The volunteers at the Rentonbased Robert the Bruce Heritage Centre are among those reportedly buoyed by the prospects of a major new seam of interest in Dumbarton’s historic sites, perhaps particularly the Rock, from across Britain and abroad. In the Bruce’s time the Clyde was a “super highway” which linked central Scotland with the West Highlands and the significant military power of Clan Donald, and towards the end of his career King Robert used his base at Cardross to keep in close touch, via fast-moving galleys, with the far flung reaches of his kingdom. Scottish tourism has benefited massively from film locations in recent years, and another new movie – about Mary Queen of Scots – also has major relevance for Dumbarton. Outlaw King, produced by respected Scots film maker David Mackenzie, will be launched by Netflix on November 9.

Historic Environment Scotland (HES), which has made the most of the massive international popularity of fantasy-
history TV soap Outlander, is now reportedly set to reap fresh dividends from what’s likely to be a still bigger filmic phenomenon – one which is likely to mirror and even surpass the success of Mel Gibson’s 1995 movie Braveheart.

LOTTO BOOST FOR WALL A project to promote the rich history of the Antonine Wall in West Dunbartonshire has received £980,000 funding from the National Lottery. The wall marked the most northerly point of the Roman Empire, and council areas it passed through have joined forces with Historic Environment Scotland to bring its story to a new generation in a colourful and inspiring way. The additional funding will be used to support the £2.1 million project for the next three years. The group plan to place replica distance markers which celebrate the building achievements of
the famous Roman legions at five sites along the Wall with information about its history. The West Dunbartonshire replica stone will be located in Old Kilpatrick. There will also be Roman themed play parks, designed in association with local schoolchildren, created at other sites near to the wall so children and young people can explore and play while finding out about the Wall.
Podiatrist /Chiropodist Alan Mckirdy
A programme of no less than 30 community projects, including a Scouts Big Roman Camp Out and a Roman-inspired community garden, will take place throughout the five authorities. This will allow the project team to show that the fascinating heritage of the Antonine Wall is for everyone. Community projects in West Dunbartonshire include a planned Roman garden and arboretum which will aim to be a green space for reflection and learning, As part of the project, which is being led by West Dunbartonshire Council, 300 volunteers will be recruited and trained to help co-design projects in their communities, act as tour guides, help with research and raise awareness.

FULL MARKS FOR CROSSLET and settled they were in their new environment and praised the manager for her leadership and for building a management team supported by excellent care workers.
Residents and carers at Crosslet House
Hard-working staff at Dumbarton’s Crosslet House, and the Day Services team, are among the best in the country – and that’s official. The care home, which provides both residential and day services to older people in West Dunbartonshire, has won an outstanding report from the Care Inspectorate. Inspectors praised residential staff for the quality of care and support provided to residents, highlighting factors like the flexible meal times which give residents greater choices. The partnership between the home and local nursery and primary school is also commended for helping residents connect with
their community, while the home’s activity coordinators were praised for their enthusiasm and for providing a range of stimulating activities and outings for residents. Inspectors were impressed with the layout of the home, including the fact that residents have their own spacious bedroom with wet floor shower and toilet facility. The views residents enjoyed of the outdoor space were also noted in the report. Residents were happy to discuss with the inspectors how happy
Councillor Marie McNair, chairwoman of West Dunbartonshre Health and Social Care Partnership audit committee, CP Audit Committee, said: “This is an excellent first report for the management and staff at Crosslet Care Home.

SCOTS IN THE GREAT WAR A recent visit to Dumbarton’s Riverside Church highlighted a fascinating fact about the First World War often overlooked in general studies. This month is, of course, the centenary of the Armistice which brought that terrible conflict to a close, leaving in its wake a terrible toll of human life – not least in the ranks of the tens of thousands of Scots who served.
There was a well-established Scots community of around 90,000 in London before the Great War broke out in 1914. Their work and background covered a wide range of professions, jobs and social backgrounds.
A special talk at the church, Scots in Great War London, dealt with an aspect few today may be aware of – which is that many Scots based down south formed their own patriotic units, quite distinct from famous regiments like the Gordons or Argylls. One such – in which this writer’s own grandfather served – was the famous London Scottish. It suffered appalling losses on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, where according to author John Keegan it mustered
and his wife Susan, contributors to a book on the Scots in Great War London – of all units – who are themselves both elders at St Columba’s in London, which in 1914-18 played a pivotal role in the lives of many Scots.
just 68 unwounded survivors from a battalion of around 1,000 men at the end of the day’s slaughter. Present at Riverside Church were BBC health editor Hugh Pym
Organisations like the Caledonian Club, the Caledonian Society and the London Scottish FC (rugby) catered for social and sporting interests, while Crown Court and St Columba’s Church of Scotland congregations catered for spiritual and social needs. Many paid the ultimate sacrifice in the supposed “war to end all wars” which, tragically, merely set the scene for the Second World War.

POLISHING
The dates and times for this year’s annual fireworks spectacle were only recently confirmed, so we don’t yet know whether it’s going to be called “Guy Fawkes Night” – which is what it is – or “Bonfire Night”. Either way it’s reckoned a reliably safe way of enjoying a one-night festival involving an impressive display of rockets going up in smoke, and this year it’s even taking place on the correct night, November 5. For younger readers unaware of the history, Guy Fawkes was a 16th century terrorist who tried to blow up King James VI and I, and the Houses of Parliament, by stashing a huge amount of gunpowder under the floor.

that may still happen in some communities), but these days he’s generally absent from proceedings – if only because only a relative handful of people know or care about what happened four centuries ago anyway. But if not for Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot, what is “Bonfire Night” actually for? It has become a national mustdo fixture for all those years,
Unsurprisingly the plot was discovered, Guy (actually Guido) and various associates met a terrible end, and huge public firework displays were commissioned – every year – to celebrate the king and Parliament’s survival.

This year’s local show is in Levengrove Park, from 7pm to 9pm (display starts 7.30pm) and the usual advice about getting there in plenty of time applies – if you can walk to the event as a family that’s the ideal, because parking is likely to be at a premium. The other piece of standard advice is to make sure all pets are indoors and as protected as they can be from the terrifying noise.

But the blight of a generation failed to stop the terrible slide to another global conflict just a couple of decades later. Whatever our opinion of these events, they shaped our lives and those of everyone we know. The importance of these terrible times, and the suffering endured, will be acknowledged in a special concert in The Denny Civic Theatre on Saturday, November 3, from 3pm to 5.15pm, where the audience is promised a memorable afternoon. The event is being

It is performed “in the round”, so that the audience are in the same oppressive space as the actors, and is predicted to challenge you, the actors, and the world you believe in to unbelievable levels. Tickets for the production, which starts at 7.30pm, are £5, available at the door on the night, or by calling in to the Alexandria Craft Centre, Mitchell Way, Alexandria and registering your name.

MAID NEEDS OUR SUPPORT By the time this issue is published there may be more news on how the stalwarts behind the effort to relaunch the Maid of the Loch aim to deal with a devastating blow to their hopes. All the progress of recent years seemed thrown into doubt when it was recently confirmed that the Heritage Lottery Fund won’t be supplying a major grant to add to the cash already collected for the project. John Beveridge, chairman of Loch Lomond Steamship Company, which has driven the project, said: “We are absolutely devastated with HLF’s decision not to grant funds to the Maid of the Loch, and it’s going to take some time to absorb this news and the reasons behind it. “Unfortunately, this decision jeopardises the whole project, and
our vision for refurbishing the ship now hangs in the balance. “Our team of dedicated volunteers, our board of Directors, tour guides, maintenance and so many more hard-working and passionate individuals, have worked incredibly hard over the past 22 years to protect and preserve our much-loved Paddle Steamer. “To have to explain to them that we won’t be sailing next year after all is extremely tough.” He added: “As a small charity, with only nine Directors and 40 volunteers, to raise the equivalent

of £2.3m towards the restoration is something we are extremely proud of. “The Maid’s return to sail would have been the single biggest project to take place in South Loch Lomond in more than 20 years, and it’s a huge blow to the area now that this £6m regeneration programme will not take place. “The effects of this decision will be felt by the whole community. “It’s a very sad day indeed and does not auger well for the future of our industrial heritage.” More on this long-running story in future issues.

AN ACE 60TH ANNIVERSARY with recently doing bag packing at Asda in Dumbarton. The team forms part of the wider Dumbarton Utd AFC, which celebrates its 60th Anniversary this year – a remarkable achievement for the entire club, and the many local players and volunteers who have contributed to its success.
Dumbarton United AFC 2005's
Dumbarton United AFC 2005's have had an electrifying start to the 2018-19 season, winning all of their opening six league matches and their 2nd round Scottish Cup tie. The club has been going for a number of years now with its core group of players, playing together for almost eight years. Dumbarton United plays in the second tier of the Paisley and Johnstone District YFL, playing local teams at their home park at East End Park. The team is currently sitting top of the league and the aim
this season – evidently quite achievable on current form – is to win the league and move to tier 1 next season. Run by a number of volunteers (mainly mums and dads) the club has recently won sponsorship from a number of local companies, who have helped support the purchase of new home and training kits, tracksuits and rain jackets along
There are approximately 20 different age groups under the wider Dumbarton Utd AFC, all pulling together to make it “a fantastic place to be”. Dumbarton Utd AFC 2005's would like to say a massive thanks to all their players, parents and volunteers who have all helped make the club the success that it is today. With so much accomplished already it’s now in the enviable position of looking to achieve still greater success in years to come. The club would especially like to thank all of their sponsors for their kind support and hope they can do them proud this season in their efforts to gain promotion to tier 1.

UNIVERSAL CREDIT SUPPORT
Late News
The news on the rollout of Universal Credit is not encouraging, and this month it’s West Dunbartonshire’s turn to brace itself for momentous change.
Saturday 17th
The new system, brought in by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), means housing benefit, income support, incomebased job seekers allowance, child tax credits, working tax credits and income-related employment and support allowance will all be replaced by one payment. Officers from Working4U have been working with partners at West Dunbartonshire Citizen’s Advice Bureau, as well as housing and third sector organisations “to ensure challenges that have been seen in other authorities are minimised in this area”. Changes include online-only claims, monthly payments made in arrears and housings costs paid directly to each claimant. People can receive one-to-one internet training to help them

And further direction on navigating the system will be on offer when it comes into force. Housing and Communities Convener Councillor Diane Docherty said: “I’d really urge residents to think now about how they will be affected . “Universal Credit will be an online service, so if you need to brush up on your internet skills, get in touch. “Similarly, the system puts the onus onto individuals to budget payments for different services, so if you want help

November 2018 | What's Up Doc?
What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn
This month: HOT AND BOTHERED...?
IT’S DUNGEON AND DECOR Most stately home hotels purporting to be “castles” are really Gothic follies built by rich Victorians with a taste for a well-worn romantic theme… but not Culcreuch Castle in Fintry. It’s the subject of the next monthly talk at the Lennox Heritage Society (Wednesday, November 14; 7.30pm in the Concord Centre), when current laird Robert Reynolds will be outlining some of the building’s fascinating history. Disguised within the present architecture of the buildings is a medieval tower, built in the days when local seats of power had to be able to withstand full-scale military action – and it’s noteworthy that the castle’s heyday was during the Wars of Independence, when anyone
of importance had a difficult political line to tread. The walls are five and a half feet thick in places – and that has more to do with “insurance” than insulation – and down below there’s a bottle dungeon, into which unfortunate prisoners were once unceremoniously dropped and, probably, forgotten about. So if Culcreuch doesn’t have its quota of ghosts it certainly should have, even if, looking at today’s splendid hotel, the medieval aspect isn’t immediately obvious. Admission for this Lennox Heritage talk is £2 at the door.
Last month saw “Menopause Day” draw attention to problems which affect 8 out of 10 women around the age of 50. It refers to a group of symptoms caused when women’s ovaries stop producing a hormone called Oestrogen. These include hot flushes, night sweats, sleep problems, reduced libido, headaches, mood changes or anxiety, palpitations, joint stiffness, recurrent urine infections or pelvic discomfort, and longer term can increase risk of fractures due to osteoporosis.
Your GP can discuss this with you, and help includes Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT), Antidepressants, Clonidine (a drug which helps with flushes). Certain foods which are high in phytooestrogens can help and important lifestyle changes such as reducing alcohol intake, increasing exercise and stopping smoking can also go a long way in reducing symptoms.
The average age of onset is 51, and sometimes

memorable gifts you can give. Why? Because the recipient knows that you've invested a significant amount of your time. By brainstorming homemade ideas now, you're more likely to have the time necessary to complete the project.
Organise your Christmas Lists Many families do lists, and many do not, so if you do ask people for their lists, go ahead and contact them now. Inevitably, there is going to be one person who takes their time getting a list to you. That's less likely to be frustrating if you have an early start.

One personal goal could be to have all your Christmas shopping done by the last day of November. That way you don't have to fight against the last-minute buying crowds on Christmas Eve.
Start on Your Christmas Cards Imagine how amazing it would feel if all your Christmas cards were ready to send by the middle of November – wouldn't that be a relief?
Go ahead and set a target goal of when you'd like to finish all your cards. Then create some type of plan to be done by that date. You could either mark off a morning on your calendar or do a little bit at a time.
Fill Up the Freezer There are a lot of great meals that you can freeze ahead of time so you have food available for those busy times. Prepare double or triple portions of some of your recipes. Serve a single portion, and freeze the extra portions. Another option is to block out a full cooking day where you make as many meals as possible.
With an early start and a bit of planning, you can survive the hectic holiday rush. When Christmas is over for another year, you will look back and have no regrets of the time you've spent preparing for Christmas while the pace of life is a little bit slower

This month: REGISTERING A CHILD’S BIRTH A child’s details should be provided to the Registrar within twenty one days of birth.
Have you got yourself in a fankle trying to twist wire to make jewellery? A class to be given by Alex Penter from the Schoolery of Jewellery at Clydebank Library on Saturday, November 24, involves turning knots into beautiful decorative wire designs encircling beautiful beads and naturally found stones and glass. You can even bring your own if you have an object precious to you. Necklaces, bracelets, rings and earrings can all be made using this versatile technique. The classes are suitable for age eight and over, and cost £9 (£6 concession) including all materials. To book visit www.eventbrite.co.uk/ e/wirework-jewellery-with-schooleryof-jewellery-tickets-49035824471
Either the mother or father of the child can register the birth if the parents are married. In the event the natural parents are not married, then the parents would most commonly attend the Registrar’s office together for both names to appear on the birth certificate. The mother can also register the birth alone. However, the father would require the mother’s consent in order to be able to register the child without the mother being present. As of 1st September 2009, in circumstances where a woman
If the women were in a cohabiting relationship but not a civil partnership or married, the mother and her partner are able to register the child’s birth jointly. Being registered on the birth certificate will provide both parents with full parental rights and responsibilities in relation to the child. The registrar in your local area should be able to assist with any further questions you might have regarding registration.

Morag first attended the drop-in service at Balloch Library in 2017 after noticing a Macmillan poster advertising our services in her doctor’s surgery.
“I was given information on the Beatson’s free complementary therapies and a leaflet on the Macmillan Benefits Service in West Dunbartonshire. I was amazed these services even existed in the area and wouldn’t have known about them unless I had visited the drop-in service in the library.
“The volunteers arranged for a member of the Macmillan Benefit’s team to visit me to look at any financial assistance I was entitled to as I was having problems with my energy allowance. Within a short period of time I received a Macmillan grant and now have someone to contact directly if my circumstances change. “What I like most about the library service is the open layout

Dumbarton-based martial arts club Yushinkan recently celebrated its first anniversary – and there were plenty of reasons for congratulations. Yushinkan instructors teach the Japanese (samurai) sword art of Iaido and the club has steadily gained in strength over the past year with members from Dumbarton, Rosneath, Newton Mearns, Glasgow and Ayr. It is a demanding but rewarding discipline, and it’s arguably a privilege for the area to have such a flourishing club devoted to this particular martial art
managing to achieve so much in just twelve months. As we head towards the end of the year the club is still welcoming female and male students and martial arts returners, with the message that it's not expensive to start as the club can provide initial training equipment. Donnie (4th dan black belt in Iaido and 3rd dan in Kendo) who leads
“The benefits of Iaido are both mental and physical. People often have the impression that it is purely a physical challenge, but you have to be able to train your mind as well as your body. “It sharpens your mind and it really helps when you're under pressure at work - this is because it's a discipline that enables you to keep calm and gives you a feeling of satisfaction and that you're progressing. “In grading and competition the judges look for perfection in the physical and mental aspects of how you carry out manoeuvres it's an ongoing process.” The club trains every Saturday from 9am until 11am, and welcomes new people. If you would like to start training just go along, or contact Donnie on 07712825143.

Fall into Winter at Portavadie Stuart and Debbie Mainland enjoyed a short break at Portavadie Loch Fyne on Argyll’s Secret Coast. Just a 90-minute drive from our Helensburgh home, yet seemingly a world away, Portavadie immediately felt like the perfect place to escape, relax and recharge. The holiday resort is located on the west shore of the Cowal Peninsula with stunning views across Loch Fyne and to the neighbouring Kintyre Peninsula. We discovered that there is so much to do at Portavadie that we could easily have escaped the hustle and bustle of our work and family lives for a week or more.
out at an incredible vista, watching the clouds roll over distant hills and the yachts sail past on the sea loch.
Our four-star, selfcatering cottage, overlooking the marina, was wonderful – and could easily sleep four, if we had wanted to bring friends or family with us. Well-behaved dogs are allowed, too.
The Leisure Experience includes heated outdoor spa and infinity pools, indoor swimming pool, kids splash pools and a sauna or why not treat yourself to their award winning Spa Experience.
It had a double bedroom with en-suite shower room, a twin bedroom, a bathroom and a living-kitchen area.
If you enjoy outdoor activities, and we do, Portavadie is brilliantly located on what’s known as Argyll’s Secret Coast. There was so much to choose from on the doorstep, including walking, cycling, mountain biking, sailing, golf and kayaking, as well as visiting local attractions,
We were ideally placed to access one of the star attractions at Portavadie, the outdoor infinity pool. It was amazing to sit and swim in the heated pool looking
such as castles, botanical gardens and museums. And after being busy doing things, we returned to Portavadie to enjoy more rest and relaxation, as well as excellent food and drink. The Lodge Kitchen was a lovely, informal place for an evening meal and, for a treat, we dined at the Marina restaurant, which has a 2 AA Rosette award. The café at the pool area has hand-made pizzas and home-churned ice cream. After a rejuvenating short break we were reluctant to leave, but we will be back, perhaps with the kids and dog next time, or maybe just ourselves!

SPRUCING UP A REAL ASSET It has enjoyed terrific local support in the past, and really does “make a difference” to one of the area’s most prized local assets. Friends of Loch Lomond and the Trossachs volunteer day
uPVC
CLEANING & POLISHING 10 % OFF We’re talking about the annual volunteer day run by Friends of Loch Lomond and the Trossachs, which this year takes place on Monday, November 26.
01436 679994 www.nightanddaycleaning.co.uk
On past form it’s remarkable just what can be achieved by willing hands in the course of a single day, and as ever there are clear-set objectives to be met – so anyone taking part can be certain they are making a specific and useful contribution.
The Friends are the independent conservation and heritage charity for the National Park area. They organise the Make a Difference days to encourage everybody to come and volunteer for a day, meet new people and contribute to making the wider national park area an amazing place to experience. For this event, the Friends are partnering with the Loch Lomond
& The Trossachs National Park Authority to work on the West Loch Lomond Cycle path and A82 lochside scenic views. The cycle path and several stretches of lochside views were opened up between Luss and Tarbet five years ago but “desperately” need some maintenance work. Jobs will include cutting back some undergrowth to protect some of the stretches of wonderful views of Loch Lomond, keeping the path clear of leaves and branches, and litter picking. All the tools needed will be supplied, and there will be refreshments, but you need to take your own packed lunch. The team are meeting at the National Park Headquarters in Balloch at 9am on the day for a debriefing and introduction to the day, before the volunteers head off in groups. Further information will be available soon, and will be sent to all volunteers who sign up. If you want to take part, or find out more, email jared.bowers@ lochlomond-trossachs.org.

FOOD WEEK TO START WITH A BANG SUNSET GOOSE WALK Helensburgh becomes the place to meet to eat this month when cafés and restaurants all over town put on special menus, offers and live entertainment. The event starts with a bang, or several, because ‘A Taste of Helensburgh Food Week’ starts on Saturday 3rd November to coincide with the Round Table Firework Display and will run until 11th November, the 100th Anniversary of the end of the First World War.
It is hoped to finish off the week with a family event in the Square. Tea and Wad (the traditional greeting for returning personnel provided by the NAAFI, Salvation Army and WRVS) will be served to raise funds for the Poppy Appeal. Organised by Helensburgh Community Council, The Taste of Helensburgh celebrates the excellent choice of quality food and dining now available in Helensburgh including two national award winners in Annayas and La Barca plus a Michelin Gourmand Bib award to the Sugar Boat. Organisers tells us: “Eighteen restaurants and cafés have each contributed to provide a budget to market and promote the event which includes a website,
facebook page, banners, point of sale posters leaflets and press advertisements. “A Taste of Helensburgh would like to thank all those businesses who help to promote the event by displaying posters, distributing leaflets and provide media support. Special thanks to Brian Harkin of Elements Design Studio for providing the website or facebook page and Brian Keating for advertising the event on screen at the Tower.” Among those taking part are: Annayas, Cattle & Creel ,Civic Centre Café, Coffee Club, Commodore Hotel, Craigard Restaurant, Dementia Resource Café, Deli in the Square, La Barca Tapas, La Jupe Wine Bar, Macintosh Club, Mandarin, Padrone Pizza, PJ’s Kitchen, Riva Italian, Riverhill Courtyard, Sugar Boat, Terrace Café.
