Maybe the most frightening thing about pictures of First World War soldiers is the striking resemblance they bear to people we know today – bar the odd “Pa Broon” moustache. Capturing the recognition that those soldiers of a century ago were people just like us, our family and friends, is the task facing Dumbarton People’s Theatre in this month’s challenging production of The Accrington Pals at the Denny Citizen’s Theatre – possibly their most ambitious production to date.

buRGH GaINS FILM SCHooL Outlander wasn’t a BBC production – and has only recently been made available here – but it’s a success which might just have influenced a hugely important decision about a school for movie-makers. In a move which could have far-reaching consequences for the Burgh, the BBC is partnering with the Scottish Government to launch a hub of the National Film and Television School (NFTS) at the BBC’s Studios in Pacifi c Quay in Glasgow – and Dumbarton. NFTS Scotland is expected to open in January next year with students enrolling from April. It will specifi cally work to address gaps in existing provision by delivering courses other providers aren’t currently offering in Scotland, such as production accounting, script editing, factual development and drama, craft and movie production accounting.

TV shows like Outlander and Game of Thrones may have influenced the BBC's decision to open a school for movie-makers in Dumbarton

A fitting tribute to Tom Tom Weir’s statue at Balmaha is becoming as iconic, in its own way, as the famous PilkingtonJackson monument of Robert the Bruce at Bannockburn – or even Edinburgh’s Greyfriars Bobby.

In just 15 months members of the public have contributed around £4,000 towards the upkeep of Tom Weir’s Rest and its associated mountain garden, which means the Friends of Loch Lomond are effectively being given the wherewithal to keep everything in perfect condition. The funds will also help fund the mundane but necessary bill for insuring the site, and maintenance during the harsh winter months. The amount raised testifies both to the generosity of visitors and to their numbers, with Tom Weir’s enduring reputation as Scotland’s most famous outdoors man helping to bring people from all over the world to Lomondside. The addition of the mountain garden last year was a particularly special event for the Friends, and many other supporters of the project. What began as a strongly-supported grass roots fundraising campaign has developed into one of Scotland’s must-see sites for thousands of people at home and abroad – and in much less than three years.

Today, visitors can explore traces of ramparts, steep ditches, and the remains of forts and bathhouses – and imagine what life was like for the Romans (or more likely Gauls, Spaniards, Germans, Syrians and other colonial troops) posted on this remote frontier.

The Antonine Wall (www. antoninewall.org) was constructed in the second century AD and is one part of the much larger Frontiers of the Roman Empire World Heritage Site, alongside Hadrian’s Wall and the German Limes. Extending 37 miles from Old Kilpatrick (in West Dunbartonshire) in the west to Carriden (in Falkirk) to the east, the Antonine Wall represents the most north-westerly extent of the Roman Empire’s general system of defence.

Plans include installing replicas of the distance slabs put up by Roman soldiers to mark stretches of the wall they had completed, and there will be a series of arts events on a Wall theme in local communities.

October 2017 | What's Up Doc?

‘LADieS from heLL’ tALeS

What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn

This month: A HIDDEN PROBLEM...

The German nickname 'The Ladies from Hell' was intended to insult, but it was taken as a compliment by the Scottish soldiers

Do you have an ancestor who fought in the Great War? That is the question people in areas including Dumbarton, Balloch and the Vale have been asked over recent weeks, as the area’s heritage team gather important real-life stories from the community ahead of next year’s 1918 Armistice commemoration.

None of it should arguably be forgotten, and despite the passage of time there are still stories to be told of the kiltwearing troops the Germans nicknamed “the Ladies from Hell”.

Every community in Scotland sent troops to the military – often to the trenches of the Western Front, but also to the Near East, the Navy and air force.

West Dunbartonshire is strongly associated with the Argylls, but as made plain on war memorials those who paid the ultimate price fought in many different units across all the arms of service.

Many never returned, and some of those who did had to live with terrible injuries, while even those who were not physically harmed were often haunted by the terrible ordeal they had been through – and by the loss of so many friends.

If you missed the local roadshow event but have a picture, letter or other First World War family story you think should be more widely known email the heritage team at local.studies@west-dunbarton. gov.uk

Head and neck cancer is on the increase. It is half as common as lung cancer, but twice that of cervical cancer. It refers to tumours in the head or neck region, except the eyes, brain, ears or gullet. There are more than 30 areas within the head and neck where it can start. There were more than 150,000 new patients diagnosed in Europe in 2012, which is the equivalent to the Olympic stadium in London being fi lled with people almost twice over. Despite this, people often wait too long to see the doctor, limiting the benefi t of treatments. However patients diagnosed early have an 80-90% survival rate.

It is most common in people over 40, and affects men more than women. Smoking increases the risk by 15 times and drinking more than 3 units of alcohol daily also signifi cantly increases the risk. Recently it has been found that exposure to human papilloma virus increases risk in younger people. If people have just one of these symptoms for three weeks then they they should see their GP: Mouth ulcers, throat pain, swallowing problems, neck lump, persistent bleeding from one side of the nose or hoarseness. Check the website “makesensecampaign.eu” for more information and make an appointment with your GP if you have concerns!

getting uP eArLY for geeSe

It is only going to appeal to the hardiest souls, but a trip to RSPB Loch Lomond on November 4 – horribly early – will be rewarded with the sight and sound of thousands of geese feeding and roosting around the Loch Lomond area. Join the team for an early morning woodland walk along to one of their favourite spots then, as the sun comes up, watch as they move on to their daytime feeding areas. Wear suitable outdoor clothing and footwear and bring torches and binoculars if you have them. The cost is £7; children £3.50; or £5.50/£3 for members, and booking is essential – email loch.lomond@rspb.org.uk or phone 01389 830670.

StuArt Queen’S LocAL LinK This month’s Lennox Heritage Society talk focuses on the intriguing but littleknown Dumbarton connections of luckless Mary Queen of Scots.

On October 11 speaker Elspeth Crockett will explain how Mary came to leave Scotland for France – departing from Dumbarton – and what she got up to while she was there. She will also almost certainly relate the events of this month in the year 1570, when a civil war was raging across Scotland – and the castle was held for Mary against the supporters of Regent Lennox. In spring of the following year, in one of the most dramatic episodes in its long history, the castle as captured by Lennox’s men, in what sounds like a desperate commando mission – they used ladders to scale the rock and surprise the garrison. He felt simply that the support the charity provided to the bereaved deserved some support in return, and – having already done a half marathon – set himself the arguably more alarming challenge of leaping out of an aeroplane in a tandem skydive. Jason had also set a realistic and (he hoped) achievable target sum of £750, and was delighted when this was achieved – particularly as bad weather had forced postponement at a time when he was clearly ready to go.

Jason was inspired to raise cash for the charity Brake! by a tragedy which took from him a friend he had known since primary school. In his donation page he says: “We grew up together, primary and secondary school and then into adult life with boys holidays abroad, girlfriends who became wives, became parents and celebrated many birthdays, christenings, weddings and personal successes together.” Then, in 2012, his friend along with one of his friend’s work colleagues, died in a terrible accident, leaving behind them their families and “many, many friends”.

Jason McMahon recently plunged through the skies in a charity sky dive raising money for Brake!

Jason adds: “Because so many lives are affected by road traffic accidents, ‘Brake’ work constantly to raise awareness to stop road deaths and injuries by campaigning for safer roads, and support people bereaved and injured in road crashes.”

The certifi cate that said he had accomplished his fi rst tandem parachute jump was followed by a thanks to all who had helped. Meanwhile his venture is not quite at an end, as the appeal runs until October 25 – so there is still time for anyone impressed by his example to add to the funds of a very worthy cause. As this issue was getting ready to go to press money was still coming in for a remarkable fundraising challenge carried out by 16 intrepid Drymen Primary PTA volunteers – eight cyclists and eight walkers. This month the final tally will be announced and plans laid for how best to invest it in the much-improved but still puddleladen grounds of the school, following on from an earlier successful initiative. Following the Rob Roy Road along part of the route the volunteers cycled 42 miles and were then joined by walkers for the final 16.5 miles – completing the distance (which includes some steep slopes and rough going) in a little over 11 hours.

The target sum was comfortably exceeded, and parents (and more importantly, their children) can look forward to further valuable improvements in the near future. It’s maybe a prime example of a grass roots effort inspiring more of the same, because the effort took exactly the same route as a pilot venture by seven volunteers a couple of years ago – but travelling in the opposite direction. Why all the fuss about a few puddles? Alas, we’re told the playing field is “too often

an unusable swamp” – as a playground of any sort it simply doesn’t meet minimum spec when there’s heavy rain. The short route to getting a satisfactory resolution is cash, and the latest venture was clearly inspired by the success of the first effort. A large amount of money was raised and work has started to drain the pitch but more funds are needed to ensure that that it is completed successfully and also allow other boggy parts of the school grounds to be upgraded. The result has been a convincing victory for local do-it-yourself initiatives, garnering plenty of support from a community which seemingly doesn’t mind a bit of a slog if it’s in a worthy cause.
