SELFLESS HUGH IS TOP CITIZEN A Dumbarton man who has raised thousands of pounds for charities and community groups has won the area’s top civic distinction. Hugh Currie, named West Dunbartonshire’s Citizen of the Year, has spent the last 40 years selflessly giving up his time to help others. Through his race nights, bingo and other charity events, he went above and beyond to ensure he gave his all for local schools, children’s charities, community groups and football teams. He even picked up and dropped off members of the community who would otherwise have struggled to attend events. Two years ago his own health concerns forced him to give up his extraordinary voluntary work, but nobody who benefited has forgotten the difference it made to their lives. Besides his latest accolade, at the annual Provost Civic Awards, he was earlier named 2019 Community/Voluntary Individual champion, following what’s said

to be a flood of nominations from grateful local residents. Provost William Hendrie summed up this “one in a million” man’s achievement: “The commitment and dedication shown by Hugh is something you don’t see every day. “When the judging panel and I read the stories about him in his nominations, we were amazed at how much he had done for his community. “He is an inspiration, and I’m so glad he got the recognition he deserves.” The awards, run in partnership with the Wheatley Group, also saw Alexandria friends Ava and Alfie named as Arts and Culture Champions after they stole the hearts of the nation with their outstanding performance on singing show The Voice Kids. The Friends of Dumbarton Foreshore were named Community/Voluntary Team

all for the dedication, time, and commitment you have invested in our local community.” The winners’ names will be displayed at Clydebank Town Hall, and all will be guests of the Provost at the Queen's annual garden party at Holyrood in July next year.
Emma McIntyre, an elite bowler with an impressive array of titles under her belt including both under-25 and Senior international from 2017-2019, was named Sports Champion. Provost Hendrie said: “It’s one of the most humbling events in my role as Provost and I want to thank you Family-run business with over 15 years’ experience

As related in a previous issue, Michelle Vall from Blackpool was astonished but delighted to uncover a ring that later turned out to have belonged to a courtier of James II and VII.

The National Museum of Scotland declined to buy it, and it went to auction, where it raised substantially more than the original asking price, and goes to a private collection in the USA.
Meanwhile the original loss of the ring, which had been used for applying an impressed wax stamp to official documents, was ultimately the least of its owner’s worries. Edward Colman was a member of a powerful English family who rose to high estate, but was implicated in a plot to assassinate King James (the Stewart monarch
There cannot have been a religious motive for the alleged treason, as Edward had converted to Catholicism, and James was also a fervent Catholic – but was also deeply unpopular in many parts of his realm because of his high-handed and autocratic manner. The ring would have been a fascinating and valuable object to find even without its intriguing back story, but with the added mystery surrounding the tragic fate of its owner was a doubly valuable acquisition for its buyer.

Community project to commemorate Balloch boat hirer Henry Thomas Lynn
£41
IT’S THE BONNIEST PLACE TO BE A historic fountain commemorating famous Balloch boat hirer Henry Thomas Lynn has been unveiled in the village as part of a council regeneration scheme. However it is also a true community project, which involved active input from Henry’s great grand-daughter Isobel Martin, as well as pupils from Balloch Primary and St Kessog's – who created memorable phrases to describe their scenic home town.
which are etched into the pavement including Be Brilliant at Balloch, the Bonniest place to Be.
Now he joins the hall of fame of great local personalities whose lives deserve to be remembered and honoured.
The fountain features a portrait of Mr Lynn, along with an inscription which reads: “To the memory of Henry Lynn, erected by his friends in the county to commemorate his association with Loch Lomond.”
Henry is fondly remembered as the man who opened up a new seam of interest in their glorious surroundings by offering people rowboat trips. The two schools worked together to produce a number of phrases
These children were present for the ceremony along with Isobel, other members of Henry’s family, and regeneration convener Councillor Iain McLaren.
Councillor McLaren said: “It is clearly something the Balloch community care a lot about, and we were only too happy to listen
to their feedback and put it back into the village where it belongs. “Now residents and visitors alike can learn a bit more about the village’s history.” Isobel, 84, who has lived in Balloch her whole life, said: “I’m so pleased that this fountain is back on display, it is looking lovely.” The ambitious Balloch Village Square Project has seen the construction of a new village square on Balloch Road beside Moss O‘Balloch Park. Changes include wider paving in certain sections to enhance space and introduce the possibility for a café culture and seating areas.

However for developer Flamingo Land and partner Scottish Enteprise that may not be the end of the story, as despite the enormous groundswell of opposition to the scheme there may be an attempt to submit a completely new application at some later date. The National Park had been poised to deliver a final decision on the plan last month when it was withdrawn, meaning there is no immediate prospect of any such development taking place.

Environmental and traffic concerns inspired more than 55,000 objections against the scheme, and local politicians – and the council – also decided it had to be opposed.

A report from National Park officers also recommended refusal, which may have been pivotal in persuading the developer not to await a final ruling. However Lomond Banks, as the project was titled, has said it is “surprised and disappointed” at the negative take on its ambition for the area, arguing that features including a 60-bedroom hotel and craft brewery were within the ambit of the local development plan for the area. The plan may be reprised for a new application once specific planning considerations are taken into account.
The new town centre conservation boundaries set-up, which includes some changes to the previous arrangement, follows a public consultation and has now been sent to Historic Environment Scotland (which provided input) for designation. As a template designed to foster conservation and potential future development – for example at the town’s eyesore Central Station – the finalised plan will inform important decisions about the Burgh’s built heritage.

01436 679994 New plan proposed for Renton Campus
RENTON SCHOOL’S BIG FUTURE The new plan for a Renton Campus under discussion this month will cost more than £15million if put into effect.
To be built on the current grounds of the school, it will include a new Renton Primary School, a new Language and Communication Unit and also a new Riverside Early Learning and Childcare Centre. There will be more open space for children to play outside, too, with classrooms and links to outdoor space on each floor. There will also be a new multi-use sports pitch and playground area on the site of the current school, which will be demolished once the new building is complete.
JGS
Nor will it be some generic newbuild out of synch with its surroundings, as materials used in the construction will be carefully considered to enhance the regeneration of the village and blend in with the Category ‘A’ listed Smollet Monument and the nearby ’B’ listed War Memorial. The plans will be considered round about now, and local parents – and residents generally – will be free to make their own observations on the perceived strengths or weaknesses of what’s on offer. However the council appears to consider it has come up with the right plan to meet the area’s needs.

It’s all been done with the help of local individuals, schools, businesses and volunteer helpers, and there’s no let-up in demand for the help it can provide.
Donations could include anything from prams, cots and cribs to high chairs, nappies, toiletries, etc – but not used toys or car seats, due to safety rules.
Now, in a fresh innovation, Foodshare has launched its own Babybank as an extra way of helping families make the household budget stretch to meet often expensive everyday baby items.
Mattresses are fine, so long as they are clean and conform to BSI number BS 187710:2011+A1:2012.
While it’s often possible to juggle a budget to delay buying something that can be put off a week or two that obviously doesn’t apply to kids, whose needs literally come first – and Babybank can help to take up some of the slack.
It can accept donations of new and pre-used baby and toddler (to age four) items, and arrangements can be made for dropping off items by getting in touch on 01389 764135. Anyone in need of provisions can make a request by phone or by emailing: babybank@wdcf. co.uk.

A NIGHT WITH HEELSTER GOWDIE The name means “Head over Heels”, and the music style is traditionally Scottish – the original inspiration was the Corries – but this band (and support) are said to have a sound and style all their own. They’re performing in Dumbarton’s Denny Civic Theatre on Saturday, November 9 (7.30-10pm) in aid of the Nora Docherty Charitable Foundation, a local charity which supports education, health care and sustainable living in the Malawi village of Chiluzi. Intended as a fun prelude to St Andrew’s Day at the end of November, the evening will also make a valuable contribution to a worthy cause. Tickets are £5, and can be obtained by emailing marywheeler37@gmail.com.

A CHAT ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH A public get-together about mental health might not sound like a fun outing – but a groundbreaking event in Dumbarton may prove otherwise. Run by the Scottish Recovery Network the Big Chat Conversation Café in Levengrove Park’s training facility on Wednesday, October 23 is an opportunity to celebrate the fact that people can and do recover from mental health problems.

LET’S TALK
Don’t expect a miserable meeting that leaves you feeling more depressed than when you went in, because there will be good food, entertainment and information stalls too. It will also give people an opportunity to discuss what keeps them well mentally and what helps them in their recovery.

ROAD SURFACING LTD
This is an event which clearly puts the emphasis on the positive, aiming to banish the wellattested syndrome which has often seen people very reluctant to talk about mental health at all. Running from 10.30am to 3.30pm it’s a life-affirming chance to see how one of the major social challenges of our times can be faced down and overcome. Men are notoriously reluctant to admit to having any problem with either mental or physical health, but the basic message applies to everyone. If there is a single message from the organisers it could maybe

be summarised as “you are not alone”, and hearing accounts of people who have fought and triumphed over their own problems can be not only useful but uplifting. The Big Chat has been designed by and for people who have their own lived experience of facing mental health problems, as well as those who support people in either a personal or professional capacity. It will allow people to share their experiences and learn from others who have been through the mill in the same way, and the event is also supported by local organisations including Stepping Stones, West Dunbartonshire Work Connect and West Dunbartonshire Health and Social Care Partnership.

ROB ROY’S MOVIE STARDOM
Do you or a loved one need help at home with everyday living and personal care?
If you ask most people if they’ve seen the film “Rob Roy” it’s obviously the Liam Neeson version that comes to mind – but it certainly wasn’t the first.
In 1953 the famous regiment was again called upon to supply extras for the Disney film Rob Roy, although in that version they played the clansmen while the Kings Own Scottish Borderers were the redcoats. The real Rob Roy, meanwhile, remains an enigma – more like a character from Celtic myth than a real historical personage – and the novel by Sir Walter Scott is largely responsible for the idea that he was a lovable rogue (and occasional Jacobite). W H Murray’s Rob Roy is probably the best attempt to get

CAN YOU HELP YOUNGSTERS? SCIENCE FEST FOR ALL Local youth work charity Y Sort It is seeking volunteer mentors for its valuable work supporting young people aged 8 and over in a care relationship.
LANTERN NIGHT WITH THE RSPB
These are youngsters who could be, for example, aged 8-14 in kinship care or 14-18 year olds with any care experience (looked after at home, looked after and accommodated, in kinship care and foster care).
We’re promised a magical evening in this winter-time wander along the trails of RSPB Loch Lomond at High Wards Farm, Gartocharn – “lit by twinkling candlelight and listening out for some of the creatures that only come out after dark.” It probably goes without saying that anyone taking part should wrap up warm – it runs from 4pm to 6pm, but of course it will be dark and probably pretty chilly by then… although fine for people on the move. The session also includes a chance to make your own magic lantern, all adding to what should be an atmospheric experience. Cost is £5, or £4 for RSPB members, and you can book by emailing loch.lomond@rspb.org. uk or phone 01389830670.
NO CALL OUT CHARGE DURING OCTOBER
Y Sort It is looking for mentors aged 18 or over to spend a couple of hours per week engaging in various fun activities – which in turn can help to bring an extra dimension to young people’s lives which can help to make a difference.
Volunteer mentors are provided with a monthly activity budget and arrangements are very flexible. Those taking part get a full 21 hour mentor induction, highquality accredited training, regular on-going support, expenses for travel and activities – and a reference for their CV, which could prove useful in many ways. If you can help, email carly. fitzsimmons@outlook.com.
The group’s Buddy-Up Coordinator Carly Fitzimmons told Dumbarton Community Advertiser: “We aim to provide young people with the opportunity to develop a positive relationship with an adult within the local community (West Dunbartonshire), in turn increasing their self-esteem and self-confidence”.
MoSSFest – Middle of Scotland Science Festival – takes place at Mugdock Country Park this month. The free day of science fun on Sunday October 6 from 11am to 4pm includes a wide range of activities, such as the Froglife Pond Doctor and Glasgow University bird ringers. There will be hands-on science experiments and sessions on making a bath bomb, maths origami, a hunt for elements or a visit to the Parasite Tattoo Parlour The festival will also celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first man on the moon with rocket building, telescopes and the Cosmic Way Roadshow, plus astronomy activities. October 2019 | What's Up Doc?
VISITORS’ CASH BOOST FOR PARK PATHS What's Up Doc? Friends of Loch Lomond and the Trossachs has raised £10,000 to help improve a number of eroded mountain paths in the National Park. The achievement was managed through a partnership of visitors working with local tourism businesses. The cash is being used to support the Mountains and the People project, whose work has included upgrading 19 paths in the Park over the past four years. More than 100 businesses collected donations from visitors by a variety of means including opt-in donations on overnight accommodation and menu items in cafés and restaurants.

James Fraser, chairman of the Friends said: “We are delighted to be continuing to raise funds to support this very valuable mountain paths work which is providing trainees and volunteers with an opportunity to learn new skills as

This month: MAN-FLU IS REAL! I sometimes worry that people under-estimate the effects of flu – even though we men are very brave about it! Seriously though, the influenza virus can sometimes do serious damage. Complications include pneumonia, worsening of heart or lung problems or diabetes, and even meningitis. Pregnant women can be at risk of premature labour or early miscarriage. We can all play a part in reducing its spread, and this includes vaccinations for all at-risk people, including those over 65, and with long term conditions. This month all Practices across the country will start vaccinating this large group
of people, please contact your doctors surgery to find out when their Flu Clinic is running, they will be expecting a big turnout! Find out if you need the vaccine from your Practice. Remember that doing simple things can also stop flu spreading. The virus can survive for 24 hrs outside the body, so regular handwashing, keeping surfaces such as door handles, tables and computer keyboards clean, and disposable tissues going straight in the bin are important. And remember, even simple flu leaves people feeling pretty rotten for a few days, so be sympathetic… even to the men!

MANSION LAUNCH FOR D:BIZ Dunbartonshire Chamber of Commerce has used Dumbarton’s magnificent Strathleven House palladian mansion as the launch pad for what’s seen as an exciting new initiative to support local suppliers. Shiona Campbell of BDS, was received.
The House played host to the Chamber’s first “D:Biz” event, which backed a landscape maintenance opportunity for Strathleven Regeneration CIC. Damon Scott, the Chamber’s chief executive, says he’s delighted with the way the session presented by one of the “Chamber Experts”,
He said: “D:Biz has been set up to support suppliers in Dunbartonshire and help them secure more contracts both locally and nationally. “Shiona’s expertise has already helped a number of our
members strengthen their tender submissions and we are delighted that we could share her knowledge with a wider audience.

GETTING SET FOR A FUN Wild weather, plunging temperatures and long, dark nights… autumn in Scotland is as different from the best days of the fickle summer as night from day. That is the “glass half empty” way of looking at a season which can be too readily assumed to be useful only for indoors activities based on evening studies, and risks missing some great opportunities for outdoor entertainment. You may have to wrap up warm, and not every day is going to be ideal for healthy walks or team sports, but in some ways – so long as you choose your times
and places carefully – the third quarter of the year can be every bit as interesting as the halcyon days of summer. While it’s true that during the summer holidays some agencies do their best to provide a variety of opportunities the plain fact is that most clubs, schools, etc, are either completely shut down or are operating on a limitedservice basis, while in autumn virtually every school, college and local club organisation

in the land has an active programme of indoor and often outdoor activities to offer. It is the season of “autumn gold”, when at its best, when attractions that are mobbed in the summer are suddenly largely free from tourists – the National Park, for example, still sees its fair share of visitor interest, but is much easier to enjoy during the less hectic days of autumn than in mid-summer, the season of mass participation festivals and crowds. By carefully selecting from the bewildering array of possibilities open to us in autumn it’s relatively easy to construct

an active and rewarding programme that allows you to socialise, study indoors or get out into the countryside – perhaps all in the same week. The trick is to organise your time in such a way that you always have a Plan B if the weather makes outdoor activities seem more trouble than they are worth. That way you can shelve one idea and switch seamlessly to an indoors alternative, rather than just “see what’s on the telly” and lose what could have been an interesting spell doing something truly entertaining or productive.
An autumn spent almost exclusively indoors is going to be pretty dull, and it’s worth taking the trouble to plan at least some events that will get you out and about on “the good days” – which are usually more plentiful than perhaps often supposed. If that means a game of floodlit five a side football, or a simple walk through a beautiful landscape close to home, it has to be better than seemingly endless months of waiting for supposedly ideal weather to arrive. If you hit the archetypal wet and windy night there are plenty of resources for swimmers, sports
fans, runners and the rest to release pent up energy that might otherwise be dissipated by dreary nights in front of the box. The advertisements on these pages are a great place to start for inspiration – if one idea does not appeal, another will possibly intrigue. Towards Christmas it’s a different scene altogether, with most people increasingly preoccupied with preparations for the festive break, while by contrast autumn is perhaps the most active season for club activities – indoors or outdoors.
For every time, there is a season… …for every season, there is an adventure.

YOUNGSTERS COMPLETE SEA CHALLENGE A mix of young people from West Dunbartonshire social work department, Blairvadach, and Cove and Kilcreggan Youth Café have completed an exciting sea voyage. Aboard a 75 foot sailing boat, ten young people with five crew from the Ocean Youth Trust Charity and two support leaders left from Oban on 8th July and sailed to Kyle of Lochalsh, Tobermory, Rhum and Mallaig finally arriving at Kyle on the 12th July. This month: MATRIMONIAL PROPERTY A large part of the role of a family solicitor is guiding clients through the separation process and advising about financial provision upon divorce.
During the marriage but before the date of separation. There are of course some exceptions to these rules. Gifts or inheritance received by one party are expressly excluded as is property acquired by either individual before the marriage, unless, as already stated, it was acquired with the intention that it be for family use.
In Scotland matrimonial assets are divided fairly between the parties so it is important that there is a clear understanding as to what matrimonial assets are. Matrimonial Property is defined in s10 of the Family Law (Scotland) Act 1985 and includes all of the property belonging to the parties, or either of them at the relevant date, being the date of separation, which was acquired by them either: Before the marriage for use by them as a family home or as furniture or plenishings for that home; or
An example of this would be a home that was bought by one person before the marriage but was intended to be the family and ultimately the matrimonial home. It is not always a clear cut process and it is important to seek legal advice when considering financial division upon divorce.

The council is one of only 100 organisations in the whole UK to receive the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme Gold Award this year from the Ministry of Defence. Since signing the Armed Forces Community Covenant in 2016 the council has worked to establish and strengthen their commitment across all services to support the work and lives of the armed forces community. There’s special focus on reservists, service leavers, service spouses and their families, and everything from flexible working to demob arrangements is covered. A support network has also been established to encourage peer support for partners or spouses of those serving in the Armed Forces, and for Reservists. Meanwhile civic events have been held to show support including the Armed Forces Day celebrations which included a parade through Dumbarton town centre involving veterans’ groups, cadets and Scouts, as well as Reserves Day and other high profile ceremonies.
Provost William Hendrie
Provost William Hendrie, Armed Forces Champion, said: “We are honoured to receive this award. We have been committed for many years to our employees in the services, both past and present, and to be recognised by the Ministry of Defence is a wonderful indication that we are ensuring our employees and their families have access to dedicated support and initiatives including education, housing and employment support.”
NEW DRYMEN HOMES APPROVED
Plans for the creation of 88 new homes in Drymen including provision for affordable housing have been approved by Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park Authority. The development seeks to bring to the area a number of benefits, for example by doubling the size of the public car park and improving children’s play space. Meanwhile the developer aims to make available a £30,000 contribution towards sustainable and active transport initiatives, along with funding for an extra classroom at the local primary school.

MUCH MORE THAN A COASTER Injured ex-servicemen at Royal British Legion Industries have joined forces with Morrisons to make and sell drink coasters which will help to raise crucial funds for our most vulnerable veterans. They are now on sale in Morrisons Dumbarton, with all profits going to support wounded, injured and sick ex-servicemen and women. The coasters come in packs of four at £4 each and are on sale now. They feature the emblem of the factory where veterans produce road and rail signage, wooden products such as pallets, and provide printing and mailing services. Veterans have been producing the coasters at RBLI’s social enterprise Britain’s Bravest Manufacturing Company (BBMC), a not-for-profit enterprise which employs more than 100 people, mainly veterans and people with a disability.
Steve Sherry CMG OBE, chief executive of Royal British Legion Industries, said: “This is far more than just a coaster. It is providing worthwhile employment for some of Britain’s bravest veterans who face significant daily challenges as a result of making the utmost sacrifice for the country. “We are proud to have taken our exciting first step into the supermarket space with Morrisons.” RBLI was established in 1919 to provide support to sick and wounded troops returning from the front lines of the First World War. One hundred years on, the
charity supports injured veterans and people with disabilities by providing employment and homes in their village. This year the charity launched a £14 million Centenary Village appeal, which will see the development of 22 apartments – each designed to be fully accessible and house single veterans in urgent need, alongside 16 new family homes, and a further 24 assistedliving apartments. At the heart of the development will be a state-of-the-art community centre with an accessible gym. It will sit alongside the existing village, care homes and manufacturing facility.

AL MURRAY DELIGHTED TO PLAY THE TOWER Top comedian-turned-musician Al Murray says he is excited to be visiting Helensburgh for the first time later this month. Al, who spoke exclusively to the Community Advertiser ahead of his tour date at The Tower Digital Arts Centre, will play a set with his band Fat Cops at the 6th edition of the popular Café Improv! programme. He added: “Playing in a serious band has long been a dream for me. I played drums as a kid and then took it up again more seriously about 15 years ago. “I have played in other ‘dad’ bands before but the Fat Cops is the real thing. We play original material
and we have made a record. It’s really exciting.” Al, who is famous for his alter ego The Pub Landlord, is still touring as a stand-up comedian but he has now added the Fat Cops to his busy work life. The 50-year-old said: “My life is a bit crazy paving basically. I live in London and play in a band that is based in Glasgow and Edinburgh. I am also on tour in Europe just now with ‘Landlord of Hope and Glory’. It’s busy but good fun.” Fat Cops formed two years ago and includes Al as drummer; Scottish journalist Euan McColm and former Bluebells frontman Bobby Hodgens on guitar; IT manager Chris Ayre on bass; Neil Murray – JK Rowling’s husband – on keyboards; and Chris Deerin, also a journalist, on vocals. They cut their first album last autumn.
will open for legendary rock band Happy Mondays on the Scottish leg of their Greatest Hits Tour.
Tap is screened. We are looking forward to it.”
Al said: “We are looking forward to opening for the Happy Mondays. We kick off in Aberdeen on October 24.
The afternoon of music, chat and film starts at 3pm at The Tower in Sinclair Street, Helensburgh. Tickets cost £20 or £17 for senior citizens. See www.helensburghboxoffice. com.
“Fat Cops also plays their own gigs at least once a month. The Helensburgh Café Improv date comes at the end of a busy time for us but it will be a great event. We will play a set from our record, then I will be interviewed on stage before my favourite comedy film, This is Spinal

MYSTERIES OF THE GODODDIN Dumbarton was neither Scottish, Pictish nor English during the stormy years which followed the end of Roman rule – it was Celtic-British. Dumbarton People’s Theatre are venturing into creepy territory with a dramatisation of Liz Lochhead’s play about Mary Shelley’s creation of the book Frankenstein (which was the name of the mad scientist responsible, not that of the Monster as often supposed). It was the year after Waterloo, and Mary, her brilliant but wacky husband Percy Bysshe Shelley, and the outrageous Lord Byron got together in sepulchral surroundings to see who could come up with the best Gothic horror tale... and Frankenstein was the clear winner. The show runs from October 2 to 5 in Denny Civic Theatre, and tickets, priced £5, are available from McDermids Keystore in Dumbarton High Street, from members, or at the Box Office on performance nights.
As the burgh’s name makes clear the Rock was “fortress of the Britons”, and the kingdom’s language was a form of early Welsh spoken across large areas of southern Scotland and also Cumbria.
Strathclyde somehow held firm while Celtic-British kingdoms in what is now England fell to waves of Germanic invaders – only to be eventually subsumed within the emerging kingdom of Scotland.
Much of the period is shrouded in mystery (hence “the Dark Ages”), but we know that
The first written mention of Arthur – whoever he really was – is said to appear in the great epic early medieval poem Y Goddodin, which is the theme of the Lennox Heritage Society meeting on Wednesday, October 16. It tells of how a band (or small army) of elite warriors ventured south from their kingdom in southeast Scotland (next door neighbour to Strathclyde) to take on the invaders, only to be slaughtered.
The great epic is literally the stuff of legend, albeit one that perhaps conceals a rich seam of distinctly unglamorous truth. Speaker Gwen Jones-Edwards will be helping the audience to peer through the swirling mists of time to fathom what this famous epic poem can tell us about early medieval Scotland, and a realm which only finally began to take on the core of its modern form in the 9th century. Were these Gododdin warriors Christians fending off barbaric heathens, and were they the last custodians of the civil and military practices of the Late Roman Empire? Lacking solid information we have to guess at the truth behind high-flown poetic phrases which can be interpreted in different ways, and it is tempting to stray into “Da Vinci Code” fantasy territory – but the quest for the elusive reality is nevertheless fascinating and ongoing. Society meetings are at 7pm in the Concord Centre in Dumbarton, and annual subscription is £10 – or you can pay £2 for a single talk.

DEFIBRILLATORS WILL SAVE LIVES fun They’ll cost £50,000, but the potentially PICKY EATERS life-saving impact of a 50% of children prefer to receive chocolate on Halloween over other types of treats. 24% of children like candy, and 10% would choose gum. Toothbrushes didn’t make the list.
major new investment in defibrillators can hardly be overstated. The purchase of 41 devices by the local authority will close off some previously key blind spots in schools, and outside community centres and local businesses – as part of a bid to ensure no resident is ever too far from help when emergency strikes. Meanwhile West Dunbartonshire Council has worked in partnership with Heartstart and the Scottish Ambulance Service (SAS) to highlight the importance of defibrillators in the community.
spaces as are fire extinguishers in buildings, as momentum builds to find effective ways of dealing with cardiac emergencies – of which there are several thousand cases in Scotland every year.
“We need more people in the community to come forward and volunteer to look after the maintenance of the machines to ensure they are ready for use in the event of an emergency.
Training sessions will aim to dispel myths about the machines while also helping people to learn CPR – and will encourage residents to consider becoming a defibrillator guardian, responsible for checking a machine every month to ensure it’s in working order.
Councillor Marie McNair, who is vice chair of the area’s health and social care partnership, said: “These machines can really be the difference between life and death for some, and so it is vital that they are widely available.
“These defibrillators are very simple to operate but I would encourage all residents to consider participating in one of the training sessions offered by our partners at HeartStart to become familiar with them and also learn basic CPR skills.
In future they will come to be seen as essential around public
“Every machine in the community has an ambassador who looks after the maintenance of that unit.

LAST POST FOR RESCUE HEROES We usually associate the Last Post for military funerals and memorials, but at a recent West Dunbartonshire ceremony it had a quite different meaning.
DELIVERY STAFF WANTED Deliver once a month in your area
The area’s Provost, councillors and officials gathered to mark national 999 Day, which besides honouring all those who put themselves in harm’s way to protect the public also recognised those who – like the military – sometimes pay the ultimate price.

Provost Hendrie raised the official flag, before a two minute silence was observed to remember more than 7,000 workers who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

Individual police officers, firefighters, ambulance crew and the rest who die in tragic circumstances are naturally written up in the press when tragedy strikes, but it is only when the total cost of the emergency services’ endeavour is seen in perspective that the reality of their often highly dangerous jobs strikes home.

Provost Hendrie said: “West Dunbartonshire Council works closely with emergency services, and we are so grateful for their vital support and assistance which allows us to keep our residents safe. “Over two million people work in the British emergency services today – many of whom are volunteers. “At the ceremony, we remembered more than 7,000 personnel who have lost their
lives in the course of their duties. “Many more have put themselves in harm’s way as they go about their work, and put public safety ahead of their own. “The people who choose to work in these jobs are truly the unsung heroes of our society so I am pleased we got to honour them in this way.” Emergency Services 999 Day was created to honour the work of the emergency services, promote efficiency, educate the public, and highlight volunteering opportunities.
