Local News | September 2017
Open in just two years Dumbarton is going to look like a completely different town by 2019, even if there are a few bumps on the road along the way towards completion of a project that promises to boost the local economy while lifting the Burgh out of its post-recession slough for good. That is the earnest hope of all local players involved in the ambitious development which forms a central plank of a town centre walkway path scheme that has been quietly taking shape over the last year. Anyone who’s maybe been abroad for a few years returning home in 2019 will surely be amazed by the change to the town centre, with the brand new council headquarters well-established by then, and the waterfront path at or close to completion. This month it’s likely we’ll have more news of vital planning applications needed for elements of the plan still to be fully slotted in – a new supermarket is on the cards – and in recent weeks the council has signalled its determination to keep the main objective to the fore.
The scheme is the lynchpin of a wider sweep of improvements which also, crucially, involves the creation of two new town squares for Balloch. It has been a long and complex process (readers with long memories may recall our coverage of the “charrette” consultations which set the Balloch end of things in motion), but these transformational plans are now poised to become reality. In Dumbarton the walkway will span over 1100 metres, and will create a scenic link for visitors and tourists to iconic Dumbarton Castle from the town centre. Rather than being a looming curiosity on the outskirts the historic Rock will be the commanding focus of a revitalised town centre well-prepared to repair some of the ravages of
Family-run business with over 15 years experience
the last decade of austerity and decline. The council is working with landowners including Culross, Lidl, Dumbarton Football Club, Turnberry Homes, Morrisons and Historic Environment Scotland to ensure that the waterfront walkway and the adjacent planned developments complement each other – and the effort of getting all of those
elements to operate in perfect synchrony will be no mean undertaking. However the local authority has left no doubt, as we head into autumn, that this most ambitious scheme to be seen in Dumbarton for years has simply got to succeed, because the spin-offs are potentially tremendous for local people and businesses.

The Trust’s aim is to promote the heritage and history of shipbuilding in Dumbarton and Scotland, and has very far-reaching ambitions.
Skylark IX, currently moored on Lomondside, saved over 600 soldiers during the Dunkirk evacuation in 1940. After being refloated, Skylark IX is planned to be renovated. Inset: A still from Christopher Nolan's summer blockbuster 'Dunkirk'

The blockbuster movie of the summer was “Dunkirk”, a masterpiece by Christopher Nolan which pitches the audience into the chaos and terror of the famous 1940 evacuation. In it the role of the Little Ships is hugely important – these were the civilian coastal fi shing smacks and passenger ferries which saved thousands of men from the clutches of the Germans.

British, French and other allied troops were rescued from those stricken beaches. Called Skylark IX, she was originally launched in Dorset, and after saving more than 600 people back in 1940 fi nally wound up – after many adventures – on Lomondside. There, unfortunately, she sank, and that could easily have been the end of the story, but a band of committed volunteers
It has already enabled clients from Alternatives Dumbarton to gain skills in woodworking, taken a group of supporters to Dunkirk to remember the fallen, and attended open days and held events to tell the story of Skylark. It’s a venture which forges a living link between the present and a glorious past, and although this little vessel wasn’t launched on the Clyde (as were some of the other civilian vessels at Dunkirk), Dumbarton will be her permanent home, as an emblem of maritime pride and a reminder of heroic times gone by. Inveraray and District Pipe Band members must reckon their away-day to the Scottish Pipe Band Championships was well worthwhile – because they took the Grade 1 prize. It was a fabulous day in which torrents of rain failed to dampen the spirits of a festive crowd reckoned at least 25,000 strong. Held at Dumbarton’s Levengrove Park, the event saw bands from across Scotland and beyond compete for prizes in various categories, while drum majors also went head-to-head for honours and Highland dancers wowed the crowds. This annual free spectacular is now an iconic attraction which is increasingly making its impact felt well beyond the West of Scotland,
be talking about it for some time to come and I hope to welcome them all back again in 2018.

West Dunbartonshire Provost and Chieftain of the Championships, William Hendrie, said: “I couldn’t have asked for a better event in my first year as Provost and Chieftain of the Scottish Pipe Band Championships. “The competition was brilliant, the atmosphere unforgettable and the scenery, as ever, stunning. “I have no doubt that all of the visitors who attended this year will

Hoist the Red Ensign Plenty of people will see the Red Ensign flying over the council buildings for a few days this month, but possibly only a few will know what it means – something to do with the Navy?
Besides supplying Britain many convoys left Scotland for the deadly dangerous run to Murmansk, taking vital arms and equipment to the Soviet Union – then reeling under the Nazi invasion.
More than simply running up a flag every civic authority in Scotland will be acknowledging the massive debt we owe servicemen who were totally engaged in keeping open supply lines without which the country would have been literally starved to death.

In fact the annual flag-raising ceremony, which happens this year on Friday, September 17 at 10am, has become steadily more important as the war generation has grown older. There are few Second World War veterans left among us to remind us of what the Merchant Navy went through during a conflict in which death and hardship were sometimes an almost daily fact of life.
DUMBARTON IRONING & ALTERATION SERVICE
It meant braving pitiless icy seas and roving U-boat wolfpacks, and sadly too many ships never made home port. On Clydeside, a major shipping hub and naval resource, the importance of the merchant marine was implicit, and thousands of men were engaged in war duties that were never glamorous and almost always extremely hazardous. Around 15,000 merchant seamen died in the Great War, and more than twice that in the Second World War.
But the Merchant Navy isn’t just a part of West Dunbartonshire history – it’s also important today, still doing the same silent service job that once meant the difference between victory and defeat. It is likely veterans will be asked to come forward with their stories ahead of this month’s ceremony – and we hope to feature some of those in future issues.

H.G.S. Candlelit woodland art
It presents the landscape and wildlife of Loch Lomond through the changing seasons, and in this filmic exposition Susannah explores the meaning of place as a way to connect with memories focusing on our relationship with nature and landscapes.

The film itself lasts just five fairly impressive minutes, but will play on a loop over two hours (7.30pm to 9.30pm), so there’s plenty of time to appreciate what she is trying to convey – and to simply enjoy what could be seen as an ambitious counterpoint of art with nature.

The RSPB Loch Lomond autumn calendar is as busy as ever, with plenty of wildlife to admire in its evocative natural setting – but one particular event stands out. It’s billed as a unique happening, and if successful could well pave the way for similarly artistic ways of viewing the great outdoors and its flora and fauna. The whole idea of the candlelit woodland walk, planned for Saturday, October 21, is to celebrate the work of artist in residence Susannah Ramsay,
whose film poem The Essence of Place will be shown on a large screen outside in the open air. Susannah has been working with the RSPB at Loch Lomond as part of her PhD research for the University of Stirling, and Glasgow School of Art, and the Essence of Place is her final piece of work.
Parking for the event is at Ross Priory, where you will be met and transferred the short distance to RSPB Scotland Loch Lomond by mini-bus – for what should be an experience to remember. If you have mobility issues, contact emma.martinelli@rspb. org.uk directly for additional parking options. The cost is £10 or £8 for RSPB members plus booking fee. Booking is essential, and slots to view this audiovisual installation are every 15 minutes and can be booked at www.eventbrite.co.uk.

Rowing the Muir route
JOB VACANCY
Carers Needed
• Full Training Provided • Salary Above Minimum National Wage • Mileage Paid To Drivers • Full And Part Time Positions • Hours Negotiable
CARERS
Walking the whole route of the John Muir Way is a considerable challenge, but one hardy group of rowing enthusiasts have managed the entire length of the now famous scenic trail by boat. If you saw these 23 enthusiasts plying their way doggedly up the Clyde you may have assumed they were a local club on some sort of training mission – but in fact those intrepid oarsmen, and women, were from Dunbar. They started off in Helensburgh before setting off on a challenge which took in the Clyde shipping lane and the Forth and Clyde Canal, before arriving in the Forth near Bo’ness – then hauled their way towards South Queensferry, North Berwick, and finally Dunbar.
The adventurous team were aged from 14 to 76 and have clocked up several miles as a group with many having trained together for over five years. Dunbar Rowing Club Secretary, Kenny Maule (66) , who took part in the event and co-ordinated the challenge with his wife, Pamela (60), said: “Someone suggested that we row around the whole of Scotland and while this sounded like a wonderful idea, logistically it would have caused a few hiccups.
“We soon realised that we already have an abundance of beautiful coastal scenery on our doorstep so the John Muir Way became the obvious choice. “As Dunbar locals, we pass John Muir’s birthplace every day. “His legacy is an integral part of our community’s history so it was particularly special for us to select this route.” The John Muir Way – a flagship project of the Central Scotland Green Network – takes in castles, historic towns and villages, stunning coastal scenery as well as Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, and has already attracted walkers, cyclists and now rowers from across the globe.

The Scottish SPCA is seeking new homes for a surprising number of budgies at its Dumbarton centre, and is hoping local residents in need of some colourful company may be able to help. Pets don’t always need to be rehomed because they’re strays or have been abandoned, as often – as in this case – it’s when the owner becomes unable to cope. Just to help staff remember who is who, the budgies have all been named after Harry Potter characters – for example Ron and Hermione. Centre manager Anna O’Donnell said, “We recently had a large number of budgies come into our care. “It was the 20th anniversary of Harry Potter this year so we decided to name them after a few of the characters!
“They’re both sexes and are all the colours of the rainbow, they’re very beautiful! “They arrived at our centre after their owner was unable to look after them due to health problems. “Luckily they’ve found their way into our care where they’ll stay until we can find them all a suitable new home." Anyone who can offer any of these chirpy pets a suitable new home is being asked to contact the SSPCA Animal Helpline on 03000 999 999.

September 2017 | What's Up Doc?
A romantic What's Up Doc? hotel star with Dr Nick Dunn This month: A Blistering Rash!
Lomondside hotel Cameron House wins accolades of one sort or another on an almost routine basis, but this year the honours were really special. The luxury destination attraction (and Michelin-starred restaurant. Spa, etc) won two particularly excellent titles at the recent Scottish Hospitality Awards – general manager of the year, and romantic hotel of the year. That is something like a dream ticket for any hotel, as it confirms both the efficiency of what is obviously a very complex organisation, and at the same time recognises the allure of the place from a customer’s point of view. The promotional material for Cameron House Hotel extols excellent service, refined elegance, and – in a flight of gastronomic hyperbole – “a symphony of flavours in the restaurant.
Now the shimmering prose can focus even more closely on the hotel as a deluxe wedding and other special occasions venue. The hotel describes itself as a place “where glamour and romanticism meet culture and history, and when a top national award scheme comes to pretty much the same conclusion it has to be good for business. With Lomondside leisure amenities becoming ever more diverse, this is one enterprise which seems determined to keep its iconic position in a notoriously competitive high end market – and being officially the most romantic in the country is great news.
Every year about 7,000 people in Scotland get shingles. It’s caused by a virus called Varicella Zoster, which causes chickenpox, but after recovery some virus survives and lies inactive in your body’s nervous system. If it later re-activates to cause shingles, it passes down a nerve to cause painful blisters on the skin, so the rash is contained within a “band on one side of the body. GPs prescribe antiviral drugs, if caught within 3 days or sometimes a week of the rash appearing. These limit the spread of the rash and reduces the risk of “post-herpetic neuralgia – pain after the rash which can last up to a year. This pain
WALK DJ Dog Walking Service Mob: 07591 748 206 Email: walkdj2017@gmail.com
affects about 1000 people per year and about 600 require hospital admission with complications of shingles. If your immune system has been weakened by age, stress, illness or certain medicines you are at more risk of developing shingles. The shingles vaccine protects by boosting immunity and is available to those most at risk, people aged 70 or more. It reduces the risk of shingles by about a third and it will be less severe even if you are affected. A good place to look for more information about vaccines is immunisationscotland.org.uk/ vaccines – well worth a look!

Dumbarton People’s Theatre have recently been recruiting – pardon the pun – for a play about soldiers in a Pals battalion going off to fight in the Great War. The Accrington Pals will be DBT’s first play of the season, and is the true life story of the men of an ordinary town who went to war, powerfully contrasting their hellish experience with that of the women who remained at home. As next year, November 11, is the centenary of the end of the First World War, it seemed appropriate to mark the occasion with this very moving play.
IDEAL
Mediation is a flexible process that uses a third, independent party to help both sides come to an agreement themselves. The mediator does not represent either party and should not be judgmental or provide legal advice. The purpose is to allow you to find your own solution. Mediation is entirely confidential and operates on a without prejudice basis. This means that, should matters not be resolved, anything discussed
should not later be used in any future court action. Mediation can be utilised in any number of circumstances, including contract disputes, neighbour disputes or family matters. It is a voluntary process and will only take place if both parties agree to participate. (Although, there is such a thing as court appointed mediation). The reason for this is that it is recognised that mediation will only be successful if the parties come together willingly and with an open mind. If you are experiencing conflict with someone you may wish to speak to your solicitor for further information and investigate whether mediation would be appropriate for your situation.

there life All about Red Squirrels Isafter Brexit? Friends of Loch Lomond and The Trossachs has donated cash to a joint initiative with the National Park Authority to showcase the red squirrels which are of one of the Park’s best-known wildlife species. The story of red squirrels and the real threats facing their survival is highlighted in an attractive new interactive display at Balmaha Visitor Centre, linked to a Squirrel Scurry Trail nearby where visitors can discover more about one of Scotland’s most favourite native animals.
Funding for the initiative has come from the Friends of OUR park voluntary visitor giving scheme which involves local businesses including the Oak Tree Inn in Balmaha collecting donations from visitors for a range of conservation, heritage and access projects. This is the fifth project to benefit from the Friends OUR park scheme in Balmaha in recent years and follows on from substantial funding for projects including the village green upgrade, and the popular Tom Weir’s Rest picnic area and mountain garden.
It means anyone with even a slight interest in an animal which is almost as iconic an emblem of Scotland as deer can get the full facts on why it’s so important to protect native habitat and foster conservation.

They used to be accused of helping witches to cast evil spells, but surely we’ve got over that little misunderstanding since the dark days of the 17th century? Jonny (pictured) is one of several black cats currently being cared for at the SSPCA’s Dumbarton centre, and he really needs a place, and a family, he can call his own. Dumbarton Centre Manager Joe McDade said, “Unfortunately our black cats can wait longer for new homes compared to the other felines in our care. “We believe that some people think black cats are unlucky, which is a real shame as they are gorgeous cats who will make lovely companions. “Jonny is finding life particularly tough in the cattery and is
desperate to find someone who can offer him his perfect home! “We feel Jonny may be suited to live in a farm environment where he can be away from busy roads but have plenty of space to explore and be by himself when he chooses. “If anyone would like to meet Jonny or one of the other black cats in our care they should come along to the centre any day (closed Tuesday) 10am to 4pm. Anyone who can offer Jonny or one of his friends a suitable new home is being asked to contact the centre in Dumbarton on 03000 999 999.

Be a crofter for a day
Senior Savvy with Suhail Rehman
This month: WORld Alzheimer's Month September is World Alzheimer's Month. This is an international campaign to raise awareness and challenge the stigma that surrounds dementia. It’s hard to believe but 2 out of every 3 people globally believe there is little or no understanding of dementia in their countries. When a loved one starts displaying the symptoms of dementia it can be difficult to know who to turn to for help and advice. I recently went through this scenario with a close family member who had been displaying symptoms for some time. We decided it was time to get help and approached our local doctor. The first obstacle arose when our family member refused to acknowledge there was an issue and refused to seek help. We soon realised that without a Power of Attorney in place we were almost helpless. This was
the first step we had to put in place. Then there was a merry go round with social work, memory clinics, hospital tests and finally organising care and support for both our family member and his spouse. As professionals in the care sector we knew who to turn to and how to best get help. However not everybody is in this position especially busy professionals who have to juggle work and family commitments as well as ensuring the needs of their parents can be met. Luckily in West Dunbartonshire we have access to many resources that can help with dementia care. However trying to navigate these and getting various services to co-ordinate with each other can be frustrating and time consuming. If you would like help or advice on any matter related to Alzheimer’s or dementia then contact your local support services on 0141 410 5306.

PRESSURE WASHING
If you’ve ever wondered what life would have been like without central heating, or on-tap hot water, microwaves and all the usual home conveniences “Clanscape” on September 9 is for you. It’s a chance to try your hand at a variety of traditional skills from the days when hard work just to stay alive and healthy was a fact of everyday life for countryside folk. Based at the cruckframed building at Ardess, Rowardennan, Clanscape takes in everything from woolspinning to mowing a meadow with a scythe. There’s an opportunity to learn rope-making techniques too, before enjoying tea and bannocks – home made, obviously – around the fire, to the strains of traditional music.
There’s no booking required, and you can drop by and join in at any time of the day. Partners for the event, on September 9 and 10 include the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, and the Haddington Spinners, and the day runs from 10am till 5pm. To get there from Rowardennan car park (which charges £3 per car) walk north for 300m to the entrance to the youth hostel, then follow the brown signs for Ben Lomond ranger service for another 300m. For further information email benlomond@nts.org.uk or call 01360 870224.

Dunbartonshire Chamber of Commerce have chosen the Clyde Training Solutions HQ for their AGM
The annual general meeting of Dunbartonshire Chamber of Commerce might not seem like the most exciting fixture in the calendar – until you notice the venue. The Chamber have arguably surpassed themselves in getting over a powerful message about the powerful potential and wide variety of local business interests by choosing the headquarters of Clyde Training Solutions for their most important day of the year. It is, as they say, a superb opportunity to see CTS’s impressive facilities, with a tour
that will include dramatic crisis management demonstrations. The fi rm specialises in maritime training of many types, for example for key oil and gas industry services, and for the Merchant Navy.
In fact the AGM is part of this event, rather than the headline attraction, but the two are clearly aimed to act in synchrony – in the high octane HQ of CTS there’s little chance of the meeting being remotely stuffy or obscure. On the contrary it’s an event with possibly profound importance for the whole area, taking in plans for the future and outlining how – in challenging circumstances – they can be brought to fruition. The Chamber will also naturally review work it has carried out so far, putting future plans in their proper perspective.
The event is public, and free, and takes place on September 29, and Guests at the Chamber’s event can runs from 1.30pm to 3pm (so it is enjoy a sneak peek at a helicopter not a long haul experience), and tickets are available from landing platform and survival www.eventbrite.co.uk. pool, complete with helicopter

Gambia school appeal of £5 per month – kids who otherwise could simply not afford to go to school. However the response was so encouraging that this commitment soon evolved into a determination to take over the complete running of the school, which was to spell free nursery education for 90 children.
It’s now 16 years since St Augustine’s Episcopal Church rector Revd Kenny Macaulay visited the Gambia with an outfit called Gambia Tourist Support (GTS) – but the impact of that trip seems as powerful as ever. In a concise but informative recap of what has happened since that first visit on 2001 the congregation are being told just how strong the association between Dumbarton people and Gambian children has become since the crucial decision was taken to do something about the terrible state of local schooling in the poorest part of the town of Serrekunda.
GTS, to cut a long story short, was about introducing visitors to experiences that would benefit disadvantaged children, rather than simply channel tourism cash through expensive resorts cut off from the population, and worked to impressive effect. Back in Dumbarton the church members at St Augustine’s were encouraged to sponsor individual Gambian children at the cost
These days the project employs three teachers, a teacher in charge, two cooks, a cleaner, and a night watchman, and the 90 children are properly educated, well fed, and given health checks.

Most remarkably, their school uniform is in yellow and black – Dumbarton FC livery – and they sing songs about both the Burgh and the people of Scotland. But a main, practical message within what has been achieved is that there’s a continual need for funds to keep it all going – in fact £1,000 per month. “Every penny helps”, we are told, and in future issues we’re hoping groups aiming to raise funds will get in touch with details of events, and amounts raised – it is clearly a cause many are only too happy to support.

GOOD
COMPANY... At The Kitchen Depot, we have always prided ourselves in our family values, on always being prepared to do whatever it takes to ensure that our customers are treated exactly as we would like to be treated ourselves - with courtesy, consideration and professionalism.
But lest we ever become complacent, we actively encourage ongoing feedback - here's what Mr Lee Sanderson has to say:
"The most incredible thing about The Kitchen Depot has been your sky-high levels of customer service. Too often a company will promote customer service as a core value, only to reveal a hollow promise when they don't live up to it." Mr Sanderson continues: "My favourite retailer is John Lewis because I know that they will do whatever they can to put something right if it goes wrong. The Kitchen Depot has performed to the same high standard."
"To favourably compare a small family business to Britain's most respected retailer is not something that I do lightly but you are well worthy of the comparison." Well, thanks for that, Mr Sanderson - please excuse us while we blush with pride. When it comes to looking after our customers, The Kitchen Depot is never knowingly undersold.
