Tide Lines will be one of the headliners at this year's Loch Lomond Live

Organiser Ross Coutts said: “We’re very keen to support local bands too - around a third of our line-up is from nearby areas.“ Have Mercy Las Vegas and Dave Arcari are probably the two most well-known, but the likes of Folky Macfolk Face, The Foz & The Super Pumas are doing really well, and I’m sure they’ll all put on a great live performance”. The eclectic line-up also features the best emerging indie rocks acts with Declan Welsh, Foreignfox and Mark Sharp and the Bicycle Thieves among

the offering, and the festival organisers have confirmed there might still be one or two announcements to come before day splits are revealed at the end of the month: “We’ve a couple of surprises up our sleeve, so we’re hopeful to confirm all information in the next couple of weeks, it’s going to be special”, said Ross. As well as the live music, festivalgoers can enjoy local food and drink produce, plus a host of activities, attractions and family fun across the weekend.

We have 2 Family Weekend Tickets (worth £60 each) to give away for the Loch Lomond Live on 22nd and 23rd September. day out opportunity with the launch of the 2018 Doors Open Day (Saturday, September 1) – a brilliant chance to see some of our familiar landmarks in more detail, and for free. Run by the Scottish Civic Trust, it covers sites that range from churches to emergency services, and (runs from noon till 4pm) with a bit of planning you can easily see around several locations in the course of one very interesting afternoon . This year’s highlights include the very familiar Dumbarton Central Station – but have you seen the veterans’ centre inside? You are invited to drop in to see what they do and perhaps exchange stories – the people manning it are keen to chat about the association, and children (and young at heart grown-ups) will find the models of interest too. Then there’s the Bowling Basin and the Bowling Harbour Project, which you’ve probably heard about but perhaps never seen up close. The arches now house a variety of commercial units, and while

those on the canal section have such facilities such as cycle hire those overlooking the Basin have arts and crafts – and there will be stalls and activities (including a canal trip on the canal) on the day. Strathleven House, meanwhile, is a modern serviced office and business centre in a stunning historic Palladian mansion. The Strathleven estate, originally known as Kirkmichael, was owned in the 14th century by the Fleming family, but despite its long and fascinating history is possibly best known today as a work of genius created by James Smith, the most significant Scottish architect of his time and the person generally credited with introducing Palladianism into Scotland. There is reputed to be a lost tunnel below the building, linking with the River Leven, but that is not the only surprise – on doors

open day you may just find historical characters around, and someone to tell you the story of one of West Dunbartonshire’s most magnificent buildings. Meanwhile if you are interested in ecclesiastical architecture Dumbarton’s Riverside Church, St Patrick’s and St Augustine’s are all involved in this year’s programme – and although you may not have time to see them all they are well worth a visit. By contrast, the day also includes the Maid of the Loch, the bornagain paddle steamer at Balloch Pier currently striving to fund what will one day be a historic return to the water under full power – and already proving its worth as a unique venue for events and functions. THANKS FOR OUR GARDEN! Grateful residents and staff at Dumbarton Joint Hospital’s Glenarn Ward recently gathered to thank Bank of Scotland staff for enhancing the ward garden.

The funds will be used to further improve the outdoor space at the ward, creating a new relaxing outdoor space where residents can catch up with family and friends away from their hospital beds.

Julie Lusk, Head of Mental Health, Addictions and Learning Disability, said: “I am really pleased to see the development of the garden and the great effort by our Work Connect volunteers who have transformed the area where patients and relatives can relax and spend time together. “It would not have been possible without the kindness of the bank staff and the dedication of the Work Connect volunteers.”

As part of Mental Health Week activities, kind hearted staff at the Alexandria branch of the bank raised £471 by holding a tombola, with prizes donated from local businesses in the town, with a further £144 raised by a member of staff who ran the 10k - with

You can also make artists' willow charcoal to take home, all to the delightful sounds of live traditional music in the open air. BROADBAND UP TO SPEED

ANTIQUES DAY AT ST PAT’S

Local MP Martin Docherty-Hughes has welcomed a new report which rates West Dunbartonshire as the best area in Scotland for access to fast broadband speeds. It is a bonus for business, but particularly for self-employed people and small businesses where speed and reliability are essential – and of course great news for casual domestic broadband users too.

According to the latest figures, 98.7 per cent of local premises now have access to superfast broadband, thanks to the Scottish Government’s Digital Scotland Superfast Broadband programme.

The research on national broadband speeds published by the Centre for Towns project found that West Dunbartonshire ranked as the number one constituency in Scotland for average download speeds.

Mr Docherty-Hughes said: “Having access to fast broadband is more important than ever to residents and businesses, which is why I have been campaigning for improved internet connectivity in West Dunbartonshire.

It is also one of the top performing areas in the UK, ranked fourth with an average download speed of 72.90 Mbps – the national UK average is just 46.2 Mbps.

“I will continue doing everything I can to ensure that all homes and businesses in West Dunbartonshire have access to fast and reliable broadband”.

The Dumbarton branch of the RNLI will be there offering teas, coffees and home baking too.

WALK FOR A GREAT CAUSE It isn’t the best-known charity endeavour, but even if your own family hasn’t been affected just ask around – everyone knows somebody whose life has been affected by the scourge of brain tumour. This month volunteers are needed for a fundraising drive that shouldn’t be any hardship at all – a walk along beautiful Loch Lomond that starts at Balmaha.

Individual registration for the event is £10, which includes both T-shirts and Fighting Force medals for everyone who finishes the route.

It’s a 14-mile hike, but if you’re reasonably fit those scenic miles will simply fly by – particularly as there will be good company to share the experience, and the knowledge that you’ll be helping to make a difference to a cause that deserves everyone’s support.

Families (two adults and up to four children aged under-18) can enter for £20.

The event is on Saturday, September 29, from 9.30am till 6pm, and takes the volunteers to Rowardennan Hotel (where there’s a chance to enjoy some food and drink, and also a wellearned rest) before heading back to Balmaha.

You’re advised to wear sturdy footwear and suitable clothing, and – despite that long hot summer – it’s always a good idea to bring a waterproof, in case the weather has the cheek to rain.

hope for a breakthrough depends, like all charity causes, on research funds.

A bottle of water is the only other essential you’ll need – a lengthy hike is a thirsty business.

Besides raising cash the walk will also fly the flag for this worthy cause, and will also further understanding both of the challenge and the highly active agenda of charity Brain Tumour Research.

The event is entitled Walk of Hope, which sums up the whole endeavour very neatly, because

WELCOME BACK TO VOLES! This year is the tenth anniversary of one of Scotland’s most successful conservation projects – one that has seen the resurgence of a cute little creature driven from the National Park some time in the 1990’s by loss of habitat and the spread of the non-native American mink. All that has changed, thanks to a chance conversation between a Forestry Enterprise Scotland (FES) employee and a wildlife vet – which led to a successful reintroduction programme for a species that looks as if it came straight from “Tales of the Riverbank”. Project officer Stephen Willis said: “Today water voles can be found from upland settings high above

Loch Lomond to the lowlands of the River Forth. “We know the current range, thanks to the efforts of a team of trained and experienced volunteers from Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park. “Our project, which is ongoing, has been so successful that water voles from the Trossachs have even been trapped and translocated to Northumberland to help boost the numbers being reintroduced in Kielder as part of the ‘Restoring Ratty’ project. “That is a resounding accolade for our project.” Linda Winskill, Wild Park Officer

Late News Saturday 1st

at Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park Authority said: “This has been a hugely successful conservation project and is a great example of partnership working. “It is fantastic to see water voles in areas of the National Park where they have not been recorded for many years. People may now be lucky enough to see these elusive mammals, or hear the distinctive ‘plop’ as they jump into the water! “National Park volunteers have been essential in monitoring the water voles’ distribution, and have contributed hundreds of hours carrying out surveys across the lifetime of the project.” The Trossachs Water Vole Project is a partnership of Forestry Commission Scotland, Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park, and Forth Rivers Trust.

Doors Open Day Vale of Leven and Dumbarton The focus is on Dumbarton and several venues in the Vale of Leven and Bowling. Visitors may be given access to buildings that they will not usually be able to enter as well as a boat, guided walks, even a fire station. A great day for the family.

September 2018 | What's Up Doc?

AREA'S GREAT REPORT CARD Local schools are starting a new term on a super-positive note, after achieving their best ever Higher exam results since the introduction of the new National qualifications. A record 80 per cent of S5 pupils presented received a Higher qualification - up three per cent from last year’s results, and just above the national average. There was special success for S5 students at Vale of Leven Academy, who scored a 100 per cent pass rate in 14 of the 23 subjects being tested. In the National 4 exams, West Dunbartonshire schools were 4.4 per cent above the countrywide

figures, while in National 5, pupils beat the national score by 2.4 per cent. In Advanced Higher, a 75 per cent pass rate across the region signalled a slight drop but two schools - Our Lady & St. Patrick’s High School and Vale of Leven Academy - improved their results and were above the national average. Of the 9,603 qualifications students were presented for, 83 per cent were passed, while 98.3 per cent of pupils presented achieved at least one qualification. The results also show that work to improve literacy and numeracy is an ongoing success, with increased results in both the Advanced Higher and Higher sections.

NICE, the National Institute for Clinical Excellence, has approved a new steam treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia. This condition is very common, affecting many men beyond the age of 50. The prostate gland is only found in men, and sits at the base of the bladder. It normally tends to grow with age, and in older men can cause restricted flow of urine from the bladder. This can result in increased visits to the toilet, which can affect sleep if during the night, slowed emptying of the bladder and increased risk of urine infections. At its most severe it can cause complete blockage, and as

the bladder continues to fill, this can become very painful, relieved only by passing a tube (catheter) into the bladder. The steam treatment being pioneered is not widely available, but involves passing a tube into the prostate and puffing steam to remove some of the excess tissue and widen the passage, and may have fewer complications than surgery. Men with even early prostate symptoms should speak to their doctor, who can arrange tests to rule out prostate cancer and may suggest medication which can help relieve symptoms. But don’t expect steam treatment just yet!

RED SQUIRRELS MAKING A COMEBACK Red squirrel awareness week begins on September 24 and there’s news that the native species is making a comeback beside the Gareloch. There has been a steep increase in sightings this year according to the Saving Scotland’s Red Squirrels project. Numbers of the indigenous red squirrels have declined dramatically over a period of decades, as grey squirrels spread across the UK. A spokesperson for the project said the Gareloch area was seen as important for conservation since it sits on the very edge of where the grey squirrels of the Central Belt meet the red squirrels of the Highlands. Conservation officer for Argyll, the Trossachs and Stirling, Mary-Anne Collis, said: “The recent reports of red squirrels in Garelochhead are the most we’ve received in many years. “We’ve had a few sightings since 2015, but only the odd individual. To some degree they

are surrounded by grey squirrels, but we’ve also recently had red squirrel sightings in and around Balloch, at Stoneymollan and in Balloch Castle Country Park. Reds have been slowly making their way down the west side of Loch Lomond from Arrochar and Tarbet.” She asked people to help by reporting their sightings of both red and grey squirrels on scottishsquirrels.org.uk The reason for the local recovery by red squirrels is not clear, but pine martens have been spotted on the Rosneath Peninsula and research in Ireland has shown that the recovering Irish pine marten population, who hunt squirrels, is causing grey squirrels to decline in range and numbers, allowing a complete recovery of red squirrels in areas occupied by pine martens.

A similar effect has also been found to occur in several parts of Scotland where pine martens are present. Saving Scotland’s Red Squirrels is a partnership project led

by the Scottish Wildlife Trust and includes Scottish Natural Heritage, Forestry Commission Scotland, RSPB Scotland, Scottish Land & Estates and the Red Squirrel Survival Trust.

ASSISTANCE This month: LEGAL AT A POLICE STATION The right to legal advice from a solicitor, if you are being held by the police on suspicion of committing a crime, was introduced by statute in Scotland following the UK Supreme Court case of Cadder v HM Advocate. You now have the right to speak to a solicitor at any time while in police custody. This could be by way of advice given over the telephone or directly in person. You are entitled to speak to your solicitor in private before the start of an interview. If you do not have your own legal advisor you can ask to speak to the duty solicitor.

It is important to be aware that even if you initially turn down the right to seek advice you are perfectly entitled to change your mind at any time. Consulting with a solicitor is an essential part of the justice process and their role is to protect your rights and give you advice about the law. They can also be in the room with you while you are being questioned. In the event you specifically request this then the police are required to wait for them to arrive before they question you, unless there are exceptional circumstances, such us the prevention of harm to others or a further crime being committed.

WILKIE

When it comes to wedding planning there’s no right or wrong way to do it. Our simple step by step planning guide consists of the 12 main tasks that every couple should have on their to-do-list. 1

Plan Budget

Have an open discussion about your finances. How much you can afford and how much you will be able to save. If your parents are helping, inlcude them early in your discussions. Not planning can lead to a lot of financial stress later on.

2

Venue

Your venue will determine your date, location and your maximum guest numbers, so make choosing your venue one of the first things on your to-do list. Do you need accommodation? Does the venue offer its own catering?

3

Bridal Party

Think carefully about who will be the best people to support you on your special day. Extra costs may include outfits, bouquets, buttonholes and thank you gifts, so the more people you have, the more this could impact your budget.

4

Guest List

Decide who to invite to the day versus the evening taking into account your guests' plus ones. Based on your budget your guest list may need to be determined by how much you want to spend per head on catering.

Bride's Dress

A lot of wedding gowns can take up to six months so give yourself plenty of time. Once you have chosen your dress, turn to bridesmaid dresses that will complement your wedding gown and groomswear that will suit the style of your big day.

7

Gift List

Although it may feel strange telling guests what you want as a gift, it will actually make the process easier for them. Your guests will want to buy you a gift so save them the stress of trying to decide what to buy and create a wedding gift list.

OBAN IS POWERING AHEAD

CCTV and Alarm Systems supplied & installed

Oban Duncan and her race team travelled south of the border to take part in what was only her third ever official race – but she is clearly set for further success in major events after pulling off a convincing win over a talented opponent. She was up against five other boats on the start line in the qualifying round, including reigning sprint champion George Elmore, who quickly claimed pole position. The two youngsters went head to head, leaving the other four boats to battle it out for bronze position. Oban took wins in heats 1 and 2 on day one, demonstrating conspicuous skill in a thrilling battle for position. On day two – having had time to discuss tactics – George returned the pressure in the third heat and took a win to ensure another head to head battle in the final heat to see who would claim the crown and the 2018 British Sprint Championship.

Oban racing in her heat

Oban made a phenomenal start with George close behind going into the first turn buoy in a manoeuvre of complete precision squeezed past George to take the lead. She then led the full race with George Elmore trying every trick in the book to squeeze past, however despite her inexperience at racing the young Scot simply “closed the door” on her opponent at every turn.

She triumphantly took the chequered flag, becoming the first ever Scot and rookie driver ever to win a British Sprint championship in their first season of GT 15 racing. She said: “The win was great but a bit unexpected. The racing was exciting, very tough, but good fun. I’d like to thank all my team at iPowerboat Racing for everything.”

CAN YOU HELP LOCAL HEROES HONOURED A FAMILY? Nominees for this year’s Provost’s Civic Awards include committed fundraisers, dedicated volunteers, a budding music star and a young hero. The awards, run in partnership with Wheatley Group, recognise local residents who make a significant contribution to improving the area and the lives of people who live here.

Dumbarton-based furniture reuse charity Home from Home has already helped more than 100 low income families this year with basic items like bed bases, mattresses, wardrobes and chests of drawers.

Those on the short list include talented Dumbarton Highland dancer Dana-Louise Dolan, who is putting the area on the map through her skills and is currently the Scottish National Champion, along with Dumbarton champion bowler Paul Kane, and Dumbarton man Phil Dawson’s Vale of Leven Football Club.

If you have an item that could prove useful and is in good condition your help will be very welcome – Home from Home is also looking for microwaves, kettles, toasters and other standard electrical domestic fixtures (with safety labeling where relevant).

Then there’s the Food 4 Thought group in St Augustine's Church in Dumbarton, which operates as a food bank Monday to Friday but also distributes donated clothes, toys and household items to people in need – and which through Community Soup provides a free hot meal to anyone within the Dumbarton area twice weekly.

If you can help phone 01389 733733 email@homefromhome.plus.com or visit Home from Home at 3 Ash Road on Dumbarton's Broadmeadow Industrial Estate: open 8:30am - 4pm Monday to Friday.

It is run by a small team of staff and a whole host of volunteers, provides extensive support to all ages in the community through a number of projects including a befriending service for older adults and a summer holiday breakfast club for young people. Brian McCluskey, from Dumbarton, who has volunteered in local care homes since retiring in 2003, is another contender, while Harry Crossan from Bonhill

hacks WALKERS’ ANGER AT PARKING CHARGE CUT DOWN ON FIZZY DRINKS

£4 for parking in popular walking locations, such as at Glen Nevis and at Forest Enterprise sites. “We regard this as a reasonable cost. However, high car parking charges can create a barrier to those wishing to exercise their right of access to the countryside, particularly those with lower incomes. “This is all happening at a time when Scottish government policies are firmly committed to promotion of outdoor recreation for health and social wellbeing benefits. “The huge increase from £1 to £9 that Argyll and Bute Council intends to impose targets people who have no other option to safely park a car.”

Trying to cut sugary fizzy drinks out of your diet? Drink a glass of water when you get the craving. If you still want your sugary fix, drink away. Most times you won't though. Parking near the Cobbler increased by 900%

fun SNAKES & EARTHQUAKES Snakes can sense an earthquake from 7 miles away which can be up to five days before it happens.

Hillwalkers have criticised Argyll and Bute Council plans for a jump in parking charges at one of Scotland’s most popular mountains. And there are fears that the price hike could be repeated in Helensburgh’s car parks – although the council says there are “no plans at the moment.” The council proposes a rise from £1 to £9 a day for two car parks at Arrochar, the starting point for climbing The Cobbler, one of the best-known Scottish hills, and the Arrochar Alps group of Munros.

Helen Todd, campaigns manager for Ramblers Scotland, said: “We aren’t opposed to modest charges at Scotland’s most popular car parks, when it is clear that all money raised will be invested in much-needed facilities like paths, signage and toilets.” Davie Black of Mountaineering Scotland said: “Our members are used to seeing daily charges of £3-

A spokesperson for Argyll and Bute Council did not comment on whether it was concerned that drivers would park on roads to avoid the charges, and said the increase, which took effect from August 27, had been brought in because of cutbacks in funding from the Scottish Government. Mountaineering Scotland will be making contact with Argyll & Bute Council to ask them to look again at their policy.

RNLI LAUNCH FLOAT TO LIVE VIDEO fun WHY DOES A On average, 50 people BANANA CURVE? accidentally drown in Bananas go through a process called 'negative geotropism', so instead of growing towards the ground they start growing towards the sun! This is what gives the banana its familiar cured shape.

The RNLI have released a youtube video called Float to Live with hints on how to float and why floating can save lives. The average temperature of British water is 12-15°C – cold enough to cause cold water shock which will make you gasp uncontrollably and breathe in water, which can quickly lead to drowning. The message is to fight your instinct to swim, pause, and float on your back until you are able to catch your breath. Doing so may save your life. Build your confidence by practicing the steps in your local swimming pool for up to 90 seconds the duration it takes for cold water shock to pass.

• Fight your instinct to thrash around • Lean back, extend your arms and legs • If you need to, gently move them around to help you float • Float until you can control your breathing • Only then, call for help or swim to safety
