ROCK DESERVES ‘FAIR SHARES’ Why is Dumbarton Castle – one-time stronghold of the Britons of Strathclyde – the poor relation of the heritage industry when it comes to investment? That is the leading question from local MSP Jackie Baillie, who is concerned that despite soaring visitor figures much less money is spent on the Rock fortress than the tourism honeypots of Edinburgh Castle and Stirling Castle. It’s arguably an important question, not just in terms of heritage but also economics, because at a time when Edinburgh is swamped with visitors during the main tourism season (even before you consider last month’s overcrowded Festivals) there can be no doubt that visitors bring with them greatly-needed funds to invest in local shops and businesses. The Rock is already a technical success, because latest figures show visitor trips to the Rock have more than doubled since 2010 – last year almost 30,000 people “discovered”

the Burgh’s hugely underpublicised historic gem, in most cases probably for the first time. From Historic Environment Scotland’s (HES) point of view Edinburgh and Stirling Castles are the gifts that keep on giving, although it has to be noted that while Edinburgh city centre definitely benefits from all that tourism interest Stirling’s recent history has been one of a struggling local retail scene and closed shops. Beyond the economic argument it is a simple fact that Dumbarton’s importance in the heritage scheme of things has only recently gained much attention. The paying attraction “Rock of
Ages” is an established success, but despite valiant local efforts (and all the nearby advantages of the National Park as a tourism draw) the local tourism industry is still in its infancy. Besides asking for more cash Ms Baillie wants HES to ensure that as much of the collection as possible associated with Dumbarton Castle is kept there (unlike the famous cannon Mons Meg, which decorates the battlements of Edinburgh Castle, despite its role in a historic Dumbarton siege). She said: “Dumbarton Castle is a much-loved community asset and also brings in tourism from across Scotland and beyond. “Members of the Dumbarton
Castle Society work extremely hard to promote this fantastic asset and their efforts have been rewarded with a huge increase in visitor numbers. “Just think what could be achieved if investment was anywhere near the level enjoyed by both Edinburgh and Stirling Castles. “I know that local people want the historic significance of Dumbarton Castle to be properly recognised. “That’s why I believe that Historic Environment Scotland should increase the level of spending at Dumbarton Castle as the investment will have a direct impact on visitor numbers and ensure that the collection associated with Dumbarton Castle is retained there.”

NEW VIEW ON SCOTLAND’S OIL The Scottish Maritime Museum in Dumbarton’s Castle Street is the venue for a fascinating new exhibition. The exhibition uses everything from diary excerpts to art and movie clips to explore the reality of North Sea oil platforms and their recent history. Running throughout the autumn (entry included in the normal entry price) the touring exhibition, in association with National Museums Scotland, is a montage of contemporary work by visual artist Sue Taylor which explores the relationship between art, environment and industry across platform life, the vast decommissioning programme and the rise of renewable energy. Sue Taylor’s interest in this major and often controversial industry was stirred as a child growing up in the Black Isle during the oil boom of the 1970s.

installations – to produce a unique Age of Oil exhibition. David Mann, Director of the Scottish Maritime Museum, says: “With Age of Oil, visitors have a wonderful opportunity to explore in much greater detail the intricacies and resilience of the engineering and people at work in this brutal environment few of us experience at first hand.” The artist herself says: “Visually these offshore installations are brutal, not bonny, built for pure function, crude oil and gas production, and more recently renewable power generation. “Located in ever changing remote natural environments, over the
years they have taken on their own individual social atmosphere created by people who have personalised their offshore work spaces.” “I witnessed at first hand the start of the oil and gas industry’s immense decommissioning programme, which constitutes such a complex and fascinating period in North Sea maritime history. “I found it poignant watching workers, who have had lifelong attachments to their platform, shut it down, abandon their work site and end its life.” There’s full detail on this and other events at the museum at www.scottishmaritimemuseum.org.

CRUCIAL DAY FOR BALLOCH PLAN The planning battle over the massively controversial Flamingoland plan for Balloch reaches its climax this month, with a critical decision on September 23. Also called Lomond Banks by the plan’s Yorkshire-based would-be developer, the scheme would bring to the area dozens of selfcatering lodges, a monorail linked to Balloch’s Station Square, a water park and brewery, in a way claimed to be environmentally sensitive and appropriate as an adjunct to the National Park. However around 57,000 people strongly disagree, indicating a huge groundswell of opposition across the community, and after
a mammoth debate which has captured news interest across the UK, the time has finally come to say “yes” or “no”. The group Save Loch Lomond see the decision as important not only for Lomondside and the Park but also for planning in Scotland generally, arguing that if this scheme gets the go-ahead a dangerous precedent will be set for future developers. With so much at stake, regardless
Artist's impression of Pierhead
of where you personally stand on the argument, the public hearing which will decide the issue will be a main Scottish news item on the day, and those who oppose the plan most strongly are certain to be out in force to reiterate their deep hostility to development on what they see as a threat to Loch Lomond and its unrivalled natural beauty. The crunch decision will be taken at Alexandria Parish Church Hall on the 24th, but on the 23rd a final site visit involving National Park board members will take place, and of course that will also be a focus for opponents to again register their opposition – while those still to make their minds up may hope for final clarification on how some of the plan’s main points would translate into reality, if approved. A welcome development certain to stimulate jobs and tourism, or a deadly threat to the area’s natural environment ? We are about to find which of these perspectives has carried the day.

CASH BOOST FOR TOWN CENTRES Both Dumbarton and Alexandria will soon see positive results from a one-off grant designed to improve town centres – with the Burgh’s riverfront and dilapidated Main Street sites in the Vale most likely to benefit.
“The purpose of the Town Centre Fund is to contribute to projects which will help drive the local economy and allow town centres to become more successful and more sustainable. “As well as those factors, we have taken into account the views of residents who have voiced their opinion on what the community needs most in various consultations and charrettes recently.” Assuming the broad thrust of the plans is accepted and its detail approved work is expected to start in spring next year.

The Dumbarton share of the nearly £859,000 made available (of which some also goes to Clydebank) meanwhile aims to create a gateway to the

Designs are also being developed for the restoration of the Smollett Fountain as a landmark feature – although that won’t apparently be possible in the current financial year - while the broader plan for Alexandria aims to complement the new housing development at the former Kippen Dairy site, along with plans for Creveul Court and Mitchell Way.

Many people arguably seldom think about eyecare unless they have a well-established problem or – most obviously – if they simply need a pair of new specs. But this month’s National Eye Health Week (starts September 23) is a great opportunity to take a fresh look at just how and why we use opticians, and where we should seek expert advice. Well-known local optometrist Wilkie and Rider (branches in Dumbarton and Alexandria) is particularly keen to get over the idea that we shouldn’t simply wait for a problem with eyesight to develop before we have an eye health check, because an early visit can help to disclose anything from problems with cholesterol to blood pressure. Now run by Willis Wilkie, who
has recently taken over the reins of the business from dad William, Wilkie and Rider aims to help people make sense of the way our health system works, while explaining how a check-up can be a sensible insurance against anything which threatens to become a larger problem going unattended until it becomes a serious nuisance. For most people sight deteriorates to some extent with age, but eye problems can surface for people in any age group – and it’s useful to know there’s a straightforward way of finding the most appropriate treatment and care.
The bid to transform Dumbarton’s Glencairn House into a state of the art library and museum has received majority backing from a consultation which drew 278 online responses. The proposed revamp of the High Street building would also see the current Strathleven Place library converted into a collections store and archive, accessible to the public, and overall costs would top £5million. Just over three quarters of respondees backed the plan, and most of these supported the creation of an events space on the new facility’s fourth floor. Similar numbers were in favour of the change of use of the existing library into a place where historically important exhibits can be viewed.

SECRETS WITHIN LOCAL NAMES The Lennox Heritage Society is back in business this month after the summer recess, with a fascinating talk about the hidden meaning behind some names of familiar places around Ben Lomond. The subject is place name etymology – whose aim is to delve deep into the past to discover why somewhere with a Gaelic name – or it could be Brythonic – was so called in medieval or even earlier times. Across the wider district our modern industrialised landscape may have changed out of all recognition since the days of wild Highland clans and longforgotten local monarchs, but their residue is all around us in names which passed down through the generations.
Most obvious of all is Dumbarton, “stronghold of the Britons”, because the Rock was once a bulwark of the ancient kingdom of Strathclyde – which gradually became subsumed within Scotland but which for several centuries survived the Saxon tide that engulfed what is now England back in the 6th century AD. In those days Strathclyde (and Dumbarton) was Celtic but not Gaelic, and was arguably the last enclave of the ancient British civilisation that was pushed to the margins – Wales and Cornwall – by
the relentless waves of Dark Age invaders from the continent. In the south-west, Dumfries – “stronghold of the Friesians” (from Friesland in the Netherlands) – neatly illustrates how foreign cultures moved in to take over lands whose identity had continued to flourish despite the long period of occupation by the Roman Empire. The Society’s meeting on September 18 will see speaker Alasdair Eckersall putting Lomondside and its fascinating ancient past in perspective, allowing us to peer through the swirling Celtic mists of antiquity to gain a glimpse of earlier times. Society meetings are at 7pm in the Concord Centre in Dumbarton, and annual subscription is £10 – or you can pay £2 for a single talk.

FAMILY STARS IN TOURISM FILM Lomond Shores decided to let a real local family do all the talking when it set about creating a promotional film flagging up everything the iconic Balloch site has to offer. Inevitably it received plenty of entries from people eager to “star” in their project. But it was the Young family from Jamestown who won the honours, with dad Alan, mum Tess and children Reece (11) and Abigail (10) showing just how much fun it’s possible to have during a break on the bonnie banks. Filming took place over two days and despite typically Scottish mixed weather there was plenty of sunshine when it mattered, helping the Youngs to show off all the activities available to visitors.
Lomond Shores and didn’t baulk at anything - including the 65 metre zipwire at Treezone!” Commenting on her family’s experience, Tess said: “We really couldn’t believe it when we were chosen as we know lots of families entered so we were absolutely over the moon. “The production company and staff at Loch Lomond Shores were brilliant with us throughout and we really did love every minute of the time we spent filming.
“As a local family who come to Loch Lomond Shores often, even we were surprised by all it has to offer. “It was such a positive experience and a great chance for our family to spend time together as I usually work weekends and family time is tricky to fit in so a big thanks to Loch Lomond Shores for choosing us as we all had a ball!” The promotional film will now be used to showcase Loch Lomond Shores at home and abroad.
Audrey Calder from Loch Lomond Shores said: “Alan, Tess, Reece and Abigail were wonderful to work with and really made production so easy for everyone involved. This family most definitely have a potential career in TV!

BURGH POET SET FOR BLOODY SCOTLAND DATE
Dumbarton poet Stephen Watt will almost certainly be the most lyrical contributor to this month’s Bloody Scotland crime fiction festival in Stirling (September 20 to 22), with a performance where his latest work is bound to figure. His fourth collection of poems is a crime book, composed entirely of verse – the first of its kind – called Fairy Rock. Stephen will be appearing along with Scotland’s top crime authors, including Val McDermid, Alex Gray and Chris Brookmyre, specifically at the Festival’s Killer Ceilidh event. First Minister Nicola Sturgeon is also starring, in a discussion special with crime fiction king Ian Rankin. For more information about the Festival visit bloodyscotland.com.

There are many worthy causes which benefit from local fundraisers throughout the year, but few which directly support a “life or death” resource so obviously vital as the RNLI – which depends entirely on voluntary contributions to survive.

The local group is highly active and very successful, thanks to the commitment of members and the generosity of the public, and Dumbarton and District RNLI is hoping this level of support will be forthcoming for an event on October 4 which also promises to offer a great evening out.
Thursday 12th
On the agenda is a Helensburgh and Lomond Fiddlers concert in St Patrick’s Church Hall in Strathleven Place, Dumbarton, where the audience is promised a brilliant evening of foot tapping traditional Scottish music (evening starts at 7.30pm). Tea and coffee at the interval are included in the £5 admission price, and it goes without saying that everybody who supports the evening will also be making a crucial contribution to the group’s
endeavours – which are carried on throughout the year with little fuss but a great deal of success.
Saturday 28th
In return the audience will be treated to a varied bill of traditional musical fare of the sort that never goes out of style, with talented musicians giving their all to guarantee a fun night out.

PARK’S JOHN MUIR ADVENTURE Local youngsters were recently thrilled at the chance to take part in an island adventure on Inchcailloch island with the National Park and the John Muir Trust. They joined Rangers to explore the island and connect with its amazing history, wildlife and landscapes as part of their John Muir Award. The group was made up of members of Haldane Youth Services, a charity that delivers after school activities for children in West Dunbartonshire and the Life Improvement Centre Scotland. They took part in a series of activities to help them enjoy and understand how to care for the natural environment. The youngsters were then presented with their John Muir Award in recognition of their achievements. A report from the National Park
Authority and the John Muir Trust highlights the benefits of their partnership and outlines how the Trust supports the National Park Partnership Plan, which includes helping young people, adults and families of all backgrounds to enjoy and value the National Park. Since 2013 the partnership has led to over 9,000 John Muir Awards being achieved within the National Park, of which around a quarter were gained by people experiencing some form of disadvantage. There have also been 19 training opportunities benefitting almost 300 volunteers and professionals within or surrounding the National Park.

This month: HERD INSTINCT… Recently the UK lost its “measles-free” status which had been given by the World Health Organisation three years ago. 231 new cases were confirmed between January and March 2019. Measles is a very infectious viral rash which can potentially infect 15 others from one person, simply through small droplets in the air. Usually causing cold symptoms and fever, in babies or the frail it can cause pneumonia or brain damage, rarely leading to death. It caused many deaths before a vaccine for it was first produced in 1968. Measles is now more common in Europe than ever before in the past 10 years, due to falling
vaccination numbers, and there is a high risk of it coming into Scotland and spreading rapidly. “Herd immunity” – with a target 95% vaccinated (Scotland is 93%) – significantly reduces the risk of the most vulnerable in the community being infected and having complications. For this to work everyone needs to support vaccination, however this was undermined a few years ago by campaigners suggesting research showed a link between autism and MMR vaccine, which was not the case. Scotland has one of the best vaccination rates in Europe, but we should keep striving for better!

not only in the 11-14 photographic category of the nationwide competition but also in the overall contest – open to people aged between eight and 24.
Using plastic waste generated from school lunches over five days, P7 pupils created artwork of four marine creatures which are vulnerable to plastic in Scottish waters.
Head teacher Elisabeth Olbrich said: “I am incredibly proud that the efforts of our Primary 7 children to change attitudes about single use plastics have been recognised in this way.
Titled “We eat from it, we survive. They eat it, they die”, the artwork is designed to demonstrate the extent of plastic pollution in coastal and marine areas and show children at the school the amount of plastic they were using at lunchtime.
“Their creative use of a week’s worth of school lunch plastic is inspiring and thought provoking and will hopefully change attitudes and practices.”
Their work was judged the best,
Stirling Council’s children and young people convener Councillor Susan McGill said: “This impressive artwork is a really
innovative way to make people think about this important issue as we aim to achieve a sustainable Stirling.” Vice convener Councilor Margaret Brisley said: “As a council we are committed to protecting and improving our environment, and it’s fantastic to see our talented children and young people highlighting this important issue locally and nationally in a really imaginative way. A huge well done to all.” The school was awarded prizes for the pupils’ efforts, including a Go Pro Camera, which will support the development of reporting and film making skills across the curriculum.

So much has
Changed
for the
Big Day
So much has changed with weddings over the years. It was back in the early 70s when this reporter got wed (writes Nick Cowie.) Things were so much simpler then.
Private Dining for the Perfect Wedding
Maybe it’s because there weren’t as many options as there are today. The planning of the wedding was usually left to the mother of the bride.

Themes and the overwhelming options of colour didn’t present a problem back then as a majority of weddings used white as the colour. Although in our case the bride and bridesmaids opted for the floaty fashions of the
day, which incidentally still look fantastic in the photos. After the church, it was a meal at a local hotel, then back to the bride’s parents or sometimes a village hall where there’d be sandwiches, a barrel of beer and in the tradition of the day a display of the wedding presents. As one mum commented on mumsnet: “My godmother, who married in the eighties, bought her dress the week before, from Laura Ashley and there were no hen dos or stag dos.

Wedding Feature | September 2019 Things inevitably have moved on from these days and now your average wedding is a much bigger affair. One of the most important aspects of any wedding day is selecting the right reception venue, remember it can be much simpler to start and finish locally. This area not only has some of the best venues in the country but some of the very best services to guarantee a great day, from experienced caterers and florists to beauty specialists and photographers all at hand to help your day go smoothly. If you are going for a big do one planner’s tip is to remember that the dream of a perfect summers day is far from
guaranteed- especially in the West of Scotland. If you opt for a winter wedding, due to fewer bookings, there can be major savings. If a winter wedding is planned, this may swing the decision towards a venue with dramatic features such as a sweeping staircase, feature wall or elegant fireplace, these will provide a lovely backdrop for pictures.

There’s already a fixed site at Dennystoun Forge, but the council is seeing a rise in demand for short stay pitches, particularly in June, July and August, when there have been unauthorised encampments in public spaces.
This month: PRE-NUPTIAL AGREEMENTS Executing a pre-nuptial agreement before entering a marriage is becoming increasingly common; and quite rightly so.
can also be useful to regulate financial provision for one of the parties in the event of separation or divorce.
It may not be particularly romantic, however, with an increase in second, or more, marriages and people choosing to marry later in life there are more likely to be assets in individual names that either party may wish to protect.
As with any contract, it may be challenged at a later date. However, as long as it can be shown to have been fair and reasonable at the time parties entered the agreement then the terms should be upheld.
After researching the options, it’s reckoned a new site would reduce the number of unauthorised camps, cutting the costs to the council.
In Scotland, ‘prenups’, also known as ante-nuptial or marriage contacts, are accepted as legally binding and are useful in allowing certain assets to be ‘ringfenced’ and from forming part of the matrimonial pot.
If the idea wins approval, a local consultation will follow involving residents, the travelling community and key local services.
A marriage contract may be of benefit to business owners or someone who has property or savings in their own name. It
It is therefore important that both parties seek independent legal advice well in advance of their proposed wedding. An open and honest conversation between partners, prior to marriage, can allow parties to enter into an agreement and hopefully reduce possible protracted and emotionally difficult litigation in the event of divorce.

A BATTLE TO BANISH ‘TUNNEL’ The views of Loch Lomond on the stretch between Balloch and Tarbet are magnificent – but only if unimpeded by the dense mass of shrubbery that has blocked the view in years past. So to build on what’s already been achieved Friends of Loch Lomond volunteers will be stepping up their efforts to eliminate the “tree tunnel”. Everyone with a view on the matter agrees it is a problem that needs to be tackled head on, with plenty of hard work guaranteed. The Friends have a ten year commitment to keep clear the
stretches beside the A82 which suffer the most from this problem, getting rid of reseeding trees and shrubs so that everyone can see the area’s prime attraction to best advantage. It’s the sort of detail most visitors will perhaps take for granted, not realising how much effort was involved, but a labour-of-love endeavour well worth the time and trouble.
The latest in the group’s Make a Difference Day sessions takes place on Monday, September 23, and anyone who can help is asked to get in touch with the organisers as soon as possible to register their interest in taking part.

hacks SCHOOLS’ BEST EVER RESULTS BURNT A COOKING POT?
The new school curriculum is already busily underway, with the trials and tribulations of the early-year exam struggle already fading from memory... but the results won’t be forgotten so easily. “We are extremely proud of our pupils whose hard work throughout the year has seen them achieve positive results which will allow them to move onto the next stage of their education.”
Your pot isn’t ruined. Just fill it with hot water and a few squirts of dish soap, bring it to a simmer then use a spatula to carefully coax the burnton bits off as they soften. That’s it!
fun THE QUEENS OF HUGE CAKES Queen Victoria’s wedding cake was three yards wide and weighed 300 pounds. Topping that, Queen Elizabeth II had 12 wedding cakes. The one she cut at her wedding was nine feet tall and weighed 500 pounds.
West Dunbartonshire pupils achieved their best ever National 5 exam results since the introduction of the new National qualifications. Local schools performed above the national average, with a pass rate of 81.63 per cent for National 5 and 76.70 per cent for Highers, compared to the Scottish average of 78.20 per cent and 74.80 per cent respectively. There’s plenty of reason for future optimism, as a partnership with West College Scotland has also seen the introduction of a
range of new courses including Computer Games Design, Enterprise and Employability and Leadership and Foundation Apprenticeships which aim to offer modern routes to employment or education beyond school. Chief Education Officer Laura Mason said: “I would like to congratulate all our pupils for their hard work over the last year and also thank our dedicated teaching staff, who are committed to ensuring every pupil is educated, motivated and inspired to reach their goals.
Education convener Councillor Karen Conaghan said: “It is very encouraging to see the progress made, in particular by the students who achieved record results in their National 5 exams. “I’m pleased that our continuing and successful partnership working has enabled us to increase the range of courses and qualifications available to our young people to meet their needs and offer students the next step on their educational journey. “As convener it is reassuring to see schools maintaining their consistently good performance this reflects both the hard work of our pupils and the dedication of the teachers who support them.”

REVAMPED RESTAURANT FOR LODGE ON LOCH LOMOND The Lodge on Loch Lomond has come a long way in its 25 years. From just a 10 guest room hotel to the now 48 stunning guest rooms and suites, perfect for staycation getaways, beautiful suites and spaces for weddings indoor and out. The transformations continue this year as the Lodge has just finished extending and refurbing the outdoor terrace and restaurant dining space. The outdoor terrace has now gone and the overall Colquhoun’s restaurant footprint has been extended. New frameless glass windows have been installed (improving on those unrivalled views of Loch Lomond) that slide and open fully; providing the outside/inside feel to the space and the Restaurant Team can take control in the good old Scottish weather. Fabulous new automatic blinds act as a sunshade and fly screen so as not to disrupt diners and stunning new furnishings complete the look. The Lodge now benefits from the ample space required for
