Sea Lochs Trail Fresh for Exploring Locals and visitors can now enjoy an enhanced journey of discovery along the Clyde Sea Lochs Trail following the addition of new visitor panels. This takes the total of panels to thirteen, boosting the trail. The new visitor information panels connect a string of coastal communities fringing the southwestern edge of the National Park between Dumbarton and Arrochar. The newly enhanced Clyde Sea

Lochs Trail, which has its own map and geocaching coordinates, is perfect for exploring the area’s history, heritage and wildlife; with friends and family, by bike, or touring by car. The four new panels are now available at Dumbarton Castle, Cardross, Helensburgh East Bay and Rhu. The Sea Lochs Trail is important in encouraging visitors to divert from the busy A82 route and explore this quiet, peaceful and interesting corner of the area. It’s good for the visitor and good for the businesses along the route. Anne Urquhart, a Director, of Love Loch

Lomond said: “The idea behind the Clyde Sea Lochs Trail is to encourage visitors and local residents to explore the villages, towns and other attractions along the Clyde Sea Lochs edge, A814 and the Rosneath Peninsula. “The In and Around Loch Lomond visitor guide contains a featured article which describes a little more about the Trail, and is available from various local outlets. We would really encourage locals to explore the local area so they can recommend to, and share this wonderful area with others. Featuring panoramic and wildlife illustrations at every site, each panel is packed with information about the Clyde Sea Lochs, their origins, scenery, wildlife and communities. All panels are easily accessible from the road and have good car parking nearby. For the more active, with

more than 35 miles of dedicated cycle ways and/or quiet roads, the Sea Lochs Trail makes for an ideal cycling tour. Many of the panels have information about walking routes nearby and for geocaching enthusiasts there is a brand new set of caches themed around the Clyde Sea Lochs Trail. There are nine other panels to discover and each one is sited at a point of interest or viewpoint: Ardmore Point (car park); Denny Tank, Dumbarton; Helensburgh; the A817 Haul Road above the Gareloch; Whistlefield; Arrochar; Clynder; Kilcreggan and Cove. Both these organisations are concerned with problems arising from the hearing difficulties people experience in public places like pubs, restaurants, cafes, shops, banks, doctors’ surgeries, local authority offices, business premises.

My purpose now is to create a similar group in the West of Scotland which will, I hope, have

Each organisation has a slightly different focus. Ideas for Ears aims to tackle problems of hearing difficulties for people in public places. This encompasses not only piped music but also many other problems such as open areas with hard surfaces and little or no soft furnishings to help absorb echoes and problems with electronic systems designed to assist hearing such as loops etc.

Lutyens masterpiece on market south, east and north, are all very different.

UP FOR SALE: Historic 1886 cottage with its own private beach goes on the market

Rosneath’s Ferry Inn, the arts and crafts masterpiece by Sir Edwin Lutyens, has gone on the market for offers over £795,000. Set in four acres of gardens beside the Gareloch, the property includes a detached cottage and private beach, while the house itself has five public rooms and four bedrooms. It was commissioned in 1896 by Princess Louise, the daughter of Queen Victoria, and is grade A listed In past times it has hosted Hollywood icons like Bob Hope,

Dinah Shore and Olivia De Havilland who stayed there during World War II while entertaining troops stationed at Faslane. Lutyens was only 27 when he undertook this commission and it is thought to be one of only two buildings by him in Scotland. The original Ferry Inn stood next to the main jetty for the ferry which ran between Rosneath and Rhu on the opposite side of Gare Loch. The inn dated from 1800. In about 1896 Princess Louise, Queen Victoria's daughter, instructed Lutyens to extend the inn as a private residence but she never moved into the house, due to her husband’s ill health, and during the Boer War the building became a convalescent home for wounded soldiers.

Volunteers, many from Helensburgh, helped to keep an important viewpoint in Scotland’s first national park beautiful as part of the recent Make a Difference Day. Led by the Friends of Loch Lomond and The Trossachs, a group of around 40 people travelled to Inversnaid to take part in practical conservation work. This included rhododendron removal and path maintenance tasks beside the scenic waterfalls, RSPB nature reserve and Inversnaid Hotel, which is a popular beauty spot enjoyed by many thousands of West Highland Way walkers and visitors arriving at the village’s

rules TO curb problem campers

A camping development strategy to combat antisocial behaviour around Loch Lomond has been approved by the National Park board. The strategy sets out new camping provision to support the new camping byelaws that come into effect in the National Park on March 1 next year. It will create 300 approved camping spaces. The new seasonal camping management byelaws will apply from March 1 until September 30 each year. They will regulate camping, tackle antisocial behaviour and irresponsible fire lighting. They will also prevent the use of public laybys as encampments by caravans and motorhomes.

The byelaws will regulate camping in three zones in the park - West Loch Lomond, Trossachs (West) and Trossachs (North) - in a controversial move which has divided opinion. Ramblers Scotland said the strategy may fail to provide enough camping pitches to cope with demand. But the National Park Authority says that the western side of the loch, including areas such as Luss and Tarbet, has been included to prevent the beauty of the area being spoiled by problem

campers. Gordon Watson, chief executive of Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park Authority, said: “The programme of investment outlined in the camping strategy is vital to the Your Park project, which aims to protect our fragile, beautiful loch shores and improve the experience of people camping, visiting and living in the national park. “It also marks the implementation of investment in additional, basic camping facilities which will improve the camping experience in each of the new camping management zones.” National park bosses have made a commitment to creating 300 camping spaces within the camping management zones when the byelaws become operational in three months time. The camping development strategy sets out how and where these 300 camping places will be delivered, and how the park authority will invest further in facilities during 2017 and in subsequent years.

Club forges Art link A Helensburgh architects company who recently moved into to the former Mackintosh designed conservative club have formed a partnership with the Glasgow School of Art. Student Elliot Downs was searching for a unique and exciting building to write his dissertation on to complete his 4th year Architecture degree course. His tutor and lecturer Mark Baines from the Mackintosh School of Architecture and Elliot visited Bruce Jamieson, Architect and Managing Director of puregreenspace at the former conservative club recently to finalise details. Nicola Jamieson who runs the Mackintosh Club commented 'We are thoroughly delighted Elliot has chosen Mackintosh's first complete building to study, this is paving the way for the

Mackintosh Club to be a creative hub for inspiring architecture, art and design right in the centre of Helensburgh. The Mackintosh Club in Helensburgh was designed in 1893/1894 by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, then only 25, for Honeyman and Keppie. Its upper floor, previously a billiard and committee room for the Helensburgh and Gareloch Conservative Association, had lain empty since the early 1970s until it was purchased by Bruce and Nicola last June. www.facebook.com/ mackintoshclub/

Our lives are busy enough without the added workload created by Christmas. So we’ve been scanning some advice sites for some of the experts’ top tips ( writes Nick Cowie).

hosting a Christmas party ask people to bring along some of the food, or ask children to help wrap presents. People will love that personal touch. Now for an important one. Don’t be afraid of change. Just because you have always travelled to family or always had them come to you doesn’t mean that’s the way it has to be.

Organisation will make a huge difference and reduce those stress levels, meaning more time to enjoy the festivities. The all important budget comes pretty high up and by good planning you’ll know what you have to spend on gifts, decorations, events, food and so on. Decide on the amount you'd like to spend on each item. The last thing you’ll want is to be juggling finances in December and paying off debts in July . Gift buying is a lot easier if you have some idea of what you want to get and how much you have to spend - make a list and don’t be competitive, buy what you can afford. They kids will soon tire of that expensive lump of plastic and your bank

account will still be suffering. Definitely don’t leave all the wrapping until Christmas Eve as it always takes longer than you think.

Would you rather rush around on Christmas going from house to house so that you can please other people, or is it more important to stay in one location and spend that extra time relaxing with your kids, enjoying a glass of holiday cheer, and soaking in the true meaning of Christmas?

Organising social events is also important. With children there will be many school and club events, and so getting them on the calendar as soon as possible will be a great help. Then additional events like office parties and pantomime trips can be added and all the family can see what is happening when. A great tip is to decide which holiday preparations and errands you can delegate to your children, partner and perhaps a friend or two. For example, if you are

If you want to do things differently this year that’s totally fine. Don’t worry about upsetting people as they have to respect what you want to do. Just be sure to let them know as early

Only do the things you really love doing and those that are most important to you. Other useful reminders include: Check your car for winter- Check all your lights and tyres are in good working order and that under the bonnet is all topped up. Home security- Don’t let an unwelcome visitor spoil your holidays. Safety whilst shoppingTake care of the presents you have bought, don’t go putting them down whilst you are browsing, don’t let someone else enjoy the Christmas that you are planning.

DECEMBER 2016 - What's Up Doc?

Activities for woodland folk If you go down to the woods this month there are a couple of activities which will help keep you fit and help preserve the woods. Friends of Duchess Woods are holding a Community Woodlands demonstration of firewood preparation and storage and coppicing and sale of firewood from sycamore thinnings. There’s also a planting event. The organisation tells us : “ We need lots of help to plant a hedge of willow saplings and wild flowers around the lower pond. Volunteers of all ages would be much appreciated. (See What’s On for times etc) Friends of Duchess Wood aims to

safeguard and improve Duchess Wood for the local community and assist in the management of Duchess Wood. It also liaises between Argyll and Bute council and the local community as well as informing the community about issues concerning Duchess Wood. You can volunteer with Friends of Duchess Wood. As well as volunteers for work parties people are needed with skills such as geographical information to help develop good quality maps of Duchess Wood and research skills - to research the history of Duchess Wood also organisers for social events and work parties and people with wildlife interests to help survey the wood and to contribute to leaflets and content on the website. Many important themes are addressed in music and some believe it promotes healing and well-being in many different illnesses. In our own Practice music and medicine have collided with the formation of a COPD Choir by one of our Practice Nurses. Applying the evidence that singing improves lung function she has persuaded almost 20 people to join the choir. The theory is that singing improves lung capacity and helps open airways which reduces the work of breathing and gets more oxygen into the body. The added benefits of doing this to music will surely lift their spirits - hopefully in time for some Christmas carols!

Last month I had the pleasure of attending a fantastic performance in Cove by the singer Eleanor McEvoy, raising funds for a new defibrillator and the training of First Responders, volunteers who provide emergency care whilst awaiting an ambulance in rural areas. During the show, she applauded the efforts of volunteers and medical staff, suggesting that this was a much more important job than playing music. On reflection I wondered if this underestimated the healing powers of music and its ability to touch peoples' hearts and influence their minds.

New linking path for Rosneath get into the village to access local amenities, as well as giving easy access from Rosneath to the marine businesses and sailing school. “This is really good news. The council is committed to improving the footway networks throughout the area, keeping people connected and providing the opportunity to live active, healthier lives.

Rosneath can look forward to a new path linking the B833 with Castle Park after Argyll and Bute Council was successful in securing £15,000 match funding from Sustrans Scotland. Work is about to begin on the development phase of the project. With a survey completed, detailed designs and costs in place the council can then look to secure further external funding to build the path. Councillor Robert G MacIntyre, the council’s Depute Policy Lead for Roads and Amenity Services, said: “We’re delighted to have secured the funding to do the

necessary background work. It’s a two stage process – we need all of our designs and costs in place before we can go for the funding to build the path. “We’ve done a lot of work in the background to get the project to this stage. It’s great to see it taking shape. The path is much needed – it will provide a safe walking and cycling route for visitors at the caravan park to

“Going forward, the strategic transport team, will be applying for future funding to make further improvements to the cycling and walking network throughout the council area. “We share the Scottish Government’s vision that, by 2020, 10% of everyday journeys will be made by bike.” Lucy Clarke, Community Links Officer at Sustrans Scotland said: “The path will offer the community a wide variety of benefits. Our hope is that society at large will increasingly choose to walk and cycle for shorter journeys rather than taking the car.”

Getting Ready

The run-up to Christmas is a crucial time for traders, and there are loads of very good reasons why customers should think of Helensburgh’s locally-run shops when looking for presents this year First of all with the lights and the new square and esplanade, it is simply a nice place to be. Second, there’s lots of cosy coffee shops to drop in for a snack or a meal and turn the shopping trip into more than a chore.

Housekeeping magazine says that updating an old dress with fresh accessories is often the best way to go. That said, if you want to look great for party season, our high street has plenty to offer without hitting sky-high price tags.

Top award for local hero John John Webb, one of the Garelochhead and Rosneath Peninsula First responders, won the volunteer category in the recent 2016 Scottish Health Awards. John (pictured) also received an achievement award from Trossachs Search and Rescue last month whilst at the launch of the 100th pad in the area on Inchmurrin. And last year he was named Argyll and Bute’s volunteer of the year. He said: “The presentation was made at the Corn Exchange in Edinburgh and the whole team was able to attend this prestigious event. “ I must thank whoever it was who nominated me for the award and feel very honoured by it. Being a first responder is of itself a rewarding and fulfilling role and I love being able to give something back to the community, so this award is confirmation that what we do really does make a difference. “Needless to say, I regard the award as recognition of the devotion and hard work of the whole team of First Responders.

not just me, and also of the important role of all volunteers within the health service. “My hope is that the publicity from this award may inspire others to join our team or support with fund raising. What could be more fulfilling than the knowledge that you may have saved a life or made that wait for the ambulance just a little less stressful? very pleased to accept the award on behalf of all the first responders.”

WEB-FRIENDLY TRAIN BONUS It’s probably not top of the list of must-haves for Helensburgh rail commuters, but some travellers may find the latest addition to services – wi-fi – a useful plus.

After the long drawn-out saga of the Queen Street tunnel operation, which caused major commuter misery during the summer, it’s at least technically a piece of good news. The Helensburgh-Edinburgh route is the latest to receive free on-board wi-fi, as part of a rolling programme that will eventually (by 2018) see 90 per cent of ScotRail trains fully equipped. WiFi equipment has already been fitted to all trains serving Scotland’s main intercity routes, and the focus is now turning to ensure that other routes can keep connected on the move.

Travellers will soon be able to use free connections provided by supply partner Icomera. All ScotRail’s new Class 385 and High Speed Train fleets will enter service with live WiFi connections from autumn 2017. Scottish Council for Development and Industry chief executive Ross Martin said: "We need to create the conditions for productivity growth to flourish, whether in the office, at the point of production, and these improvements to WiFi connectivity being rolled out across the railway network form an important part of that.

'Seems like

we're in

GOOD

COMPANY... At The Kitchen Depot, we have always prided ourselves in our family values, on always being prepared to do whatever it takes to ensure that our customers are treated exactly as we would like to be treated ourselves - with courtesy, consideration and professionalism.

But lest we ever become complacent, we actively encourage ongoing feedback - here's what Mr Lee Sanderson has to say:

"The most incredible thing about The Kitchen Depot has been your sky-high levels of customer service. Too often a company will promote customer service as a core value, only to reveal a hollow promise when they don't live up to it." Mr Sanderson continues: "My favourite retailer is John Lewis because I know that they will do whatever they can to put something right if it goes wrong. The Kitchen Depot has performed to the same high standard."

"To favourably compare a small family business to Britain's most respected retailer is not something that I do lightly but you are well worthy of the comparison." Well, thanks for that, Mr Sanderson - please excuse us while we blush with pride. When it comes to looking after our customers, The Kitchen Depot is never knowingly undersold.
