Local News - JANUARY 2017
It was onwards and upwards in 2016 transform Helensburgh pierhead area took a big step forward with the news that the council has put the detailed leisure centre design out to tender.
Looking back over the year as reported in this magazine reveals an awful lot about our local communities. It is sometimes easy to forget just what a vibrant place we live in. (writes Nick Cowie) We were blessed this year with a fabulous weekend for the winter festival with an estimated 6500 people attending over two days. As with much that is good in the town, its backbone was the volunteers who figure so often in the big stories and events. The new church halls at Helensburgh Parish Church opened to the community last year are a case in point- an
astonishing fundraising effort which has achieved a major new facility for the town. One that will serve it to the end of the century and beyond. The area was on the map internationally when thousands of visitors came to Cardross for a major arts event in the ruins of St Peter’s Seminary. Most visited Helensburgh too filling the restaurants and cafes.
Summer saw two ale fests and two Highland Games plus the Piping Championships attract visitors from far afield while crafty co-ordination saw Friends of the Victoria Hall and Friends of Hermitage Park presenting a double treat when the annual Summer Food and Craft Fair in the Victoria Hall was held on the same day as Tea in the Park. Meanwhile the masterplan to
The ever-enterprising communities of Cove and Kilcreggan also brought us the Cove and Kilcreggan Book Festival with talks from top authors packing out the Burgh Hall. And our whole area was boosted by the revival of the the Clyde Sea Lochs Trail. New visitor information panels connect a string of coastal communities between Dumbarton and Arrochar. We hope to report on many more positive events in our area - but for now a Happy 2017 to all our readers.

Local News - JANUARY 2017
Park revival begins this month
ARTIST IMPRESSION: A new pavilion will be part of the revival of Hermitage Park
The long awaited refurbishment of Hermitage Park is due to start this month and residents are being offered a tour to help them understand the first phase. One of the first tasks will be the felling of diseased and overgrown trees within the park. Following on from a detailed arboricultural survey some 60 to 80 trees have been identified as at the end of their lives or diseased. Fiona Baker Chair of the Friends of Hermitage Park said: “While it will be sad to see so many mature trees removed the good news is
that many more new trees will be planted than will be removed and these will grace the park for another hundred years. Hermitage Park Manager Melissa Simpson, in conjunction with the Friends of Hermitage Park, have organised a walking tour of the Park on Saturday 7 January to give an overview of the tree felling operations pointing out
which trees will be felled and explaining why it is necessary. Fiona adds: “The Friends and Melissa know that this first phase of works will be quite shocking to many but it is sadly necessary. They are keen to provide as much information as possible to local residents and reassurance about the reasons for the work and explain the new tree planting proposals. The renovation of the Park will be completed by June 2018. Following extensive consultation with the community the rejuvenated park will include a new pavilion, a fountain plaza on the site of the old mill pond, extensive restoration works to the war memorial, new paths and lighting throughout the park, interpretation panels, a new children’s play area and a demonstration kitchen garden. The Community Advertiser will be bringing our readers regular updates on the project as it progresses. Meet at the Sinclair Street entrance to the Park at 2pm on Saturday 7 January for the Tree Tour.

KEEPING FIT: Scientists have suggested a simple walk leads to various health benefits
New Year fitness is as easy as putting one foot in front of the other, scientists tell us. Even a vigorous 20 minute walk on the way to work every day works wonders. A European Society of Cardiology study showed that those who engaged in daily moderate exercise, such as a brisk walk even experienced anti-aging benefits. Certainly this activity will melt away the pounds, tone your flabby bits and leave you on an emotional high. And it does not require gym membership or a
personal trainer. Combine it with a calorie count. The Scottish Public Health Observatory revealed that Scotland is the second-fattest nation in the developed world, with only the United States having higher obesity levels. One top sports scientist calculated that, based just on
Fitness experts tell us that if you've been sedentary for years, a walk around the block once a day may equal success. Good fitness is gradual, measured improvement. Track your progress and listen to your body. There are plenty of apps to help. They advise that If something doesn't feel right, don't force it. If you start running and it bores you to tears, or if you experience undue discomfort, try something else - reduce your intensity, increase your duration, or mix activities to keep the interest level high and utilise different muscle groups. With this approach, short-term setbacks won't cause long-term failure and it's never too late to start again. Experts add that a complete fitness programme should incorporate fitness, nutrition and education for optimum results.

Walk in a winter wonderland height, it's well worth while savouring the extensive views stretching out before us, when the quality of the landscape in which Helensburgh is set can be seen to great effect.”
WINTER WALKS: There are many great local routes with fantastic scenery on offer
There are few better ways to feel fresher and fitter than getting out for a country walk. Thanks to the great work done by volunteers many new tracks and trails have been opened. One place to seek inspiration is on the Three Lochs Way website where you’ll find a helpful blog by Alistair McIntyre a member of Helensburgh and District Access Trust.
across the Firth of Clyde then the route makes a right-angled turn to the right, taking walkers on to the Highlandman's Road, an historic route leading over the moors to Glen Fruin.
He describes three walks including one from the Helensburgh Upland Way footpath starting at the car park near Hill House. The woodlands soon open up giving views south
A great deal of improvement work has recently been carried out on the track, thanks to the efforts of Helensburgh and District Access Trust. Alistair writes: “As we gain

A gentle descent brings walkers down to the public road through Glen Fruin and on to Garelochhead. These hills offer high quality walking. “I look upon them as old friends - but friends to be treated with respect at all times, especially in winter.” says Alistair. He adds: “Approaching the summit of the road, we pass the cairn commemorating the Battle of 1603, when around 140 people lost their lives, some of whom doubtless lived nearby. Remains of large numbers of their summer dwellings or 'shielings' can still be seen by the headwaters of surrounding streams.” A guidebook is available online from Helensburgh and District Access Trust at www. threelochsway.com in addition to useful information about the walk, including smartphone apps for the route.

Race Director of the Helensburgh 10k, Kevin Johnson paid tribute to the loyalty and professionalism of Polaroid and in particular Paul Sheerin, the longtime Chair of the organising committee. The Polaroid Series was one of the longest and most successful sponsorships in grassroots sport in the UK and one in which the three local athletics clubs Helensburgh, Dumbarton and Clydesdale are rightly proud. The new organising team shortly hope to announce the title sponsor but have already secured significant support from running retailer, Start Fitness and footwear and apparel brand More Mile. It is expected that AG Barr's Strathmore Water will be keeping the runners hydrated and refreshed once again. Two existing races remain and one new event will be announced shortly. The dates are:
• Helensburgh Thursday 4th May 7.30pm • Dumbarton
Thursday 11th May 7.30pm
• To be announced

Rhu and Shandon Community Council has welcomed plans to renovate one of Rhu’s most prominent buildings which residents complain has become an eyesore. Writing in support of the planning application the council stated: “For some time Rhu and Shandon Community Council has been concerned about the dilapidated state of the properties at 1-6 Rhu House, Gareloch Road, Rhu which occupy such a prominent position in the Conservation Area of the village. “We therefore welcome these proposals to carry out exterior repainting and replacement of windows, and support the approval of these applications.” Planning permission for proposals to carry out refurbishment of the roofs and dormers has already been granted. The community council suggests that any constraints with respect
to appropriate materials or methodologies, requested by specialists from Historic Scotland or other agencies, be specified as a condition of approval. Residents had been expressing concern about the state of the buildings, which feature prominently on postcards of the conservation village, for some time. The renovation plans followed a sale to a new owner. There is still concern in the village about the state of the shop adjoining the post office, which after a short period of use as a mini-supermarket now lies empty apart from a window full of peeling posters.
Persimmon consult on Dobbie plan Community Councillors have been invited to a consultation event at the Ardencaple Hotel between 1pm and 7pm, on Thursdsay 16th March. Persimmon homes are proposing to build 95 dwellings on the old Dobbies site and the maturing woodland adjacent to Dobbies and to Duchess Wood. They are holding a pre-planning application consultation on 16 March at the hotel. The site consists of the old Dobbies nursery, which was predesignated for 16 homes, and is now run-down, and a woodland site that adjoins Duchess Wood. New book honours Great Scots Dr Krishna Goel, as a distinguished consultant paediatrician at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children and a founder director of CHAS, can justly be called a Great Scot himself. But modestly the now-retired Helensburgh resident has not included himself in his latest book: ”Some Great Scots.” which has just been published. Dr Goel, who emigrated to Scotland in 1965 has written a fascinating illustrated compendium of distinguished Scots from the 18th century to the present day. All the proceeds are being donated to CHAS ( The Children's Hospice Association Scotland) As First Minister Nicola Sturgeon says in the introduction: “ Nowhere is the spirit of Scotland more evident than in its people. Dr Goel’s book is a valuable addition to our understanding of how our country has helped shape the modern world.”
produced an amazing number of outstanding men and women. By their inventions, writings and discoveries they changed the world for the better.” His definition of a Scot is mainly someone born here , but rightly includes people born outside the country, who spent a significant time living here. To open the book at any page is to marvel that such a small country has produced so many distinguished artists, scientists, inventors, writers, doctors, poets and explorers.
And he also includes among his Great Scots people who have raised the spirits of the nation with their achievements in sport, art and entertainment. Priced at just £10, this book will not only help Scots to name far more than a dozen of their famous compatriots, it will help newcomers understand the great heritage of the country they have chosen to live in. For a copy contact Dr Goel on 01436 676435 or email krishna. goel@btinternet.com

Bin cuts led to recycle boost The introduction of the new refuse and recycling collection service has led to an increase in recycling in several areas according to the council. Argyll and Bute Council introduced a new refuse and recycling service keeping recycling services as they are but moving to a three-weekly schedule for general waste (green) bins. Councillor Ellen Morton, Policy Lead for Roads and Amenity Services, said: “Like all councils we have to change the way we do things because of drastically reduced funding, with £10 million of savings this year alone. At the same time we have to reduce the amount of waste that goes to landfill because we pay over £80 in tax for every tonne. “In Helensburgh and Lomond we are seeing a huge rise in the use of the food and glass waste bins, as well as a slight increase in the use of blue bins. “By taking advantage of the recycling options available people can save space in their green bin, save money for council services and save money for themselves.
By throwing away less food people could save hundreds of pounds each year; money which is better in their pocket than in the bin.” The council is asking people to clearly label their bins so that the waste team can track and monitor waste collections and identify where improvements can be made. If people could clearly mark their bins with their house name or number within two months of the new waste collections starting it would be very helpful.
applications have been received for additional green bins. Additional recycling bins are available free of charge. Further information at www. argyll-bute/gov.uk/bins To request additional recycling bins, contact an environmental warden, or find out if you qualify for a second general waste bin call 01546 605514.

JANUARY 2017 - What's Up Doc?
Post offers What's Up Doc? “fulfilment and fun with Dr Nick Dunn Helensburgh & Lomond Carers SCIO is looking to develop its culture of volunteering. The charity is seeking a volunteer coordinator to work with their existing volunteers. Sharon Richardson from the organisation said: “Volunteers are a vital part of assisting the organisation to provide a service to unpaid carers within the Helensburgh & Lomond area. “The coordinator will work with Team leaders and existing volunteers. It is an unpaid position and the person will gain personal development, update their existing skill set, training, fulfilment and fun. She adds that the co-ordinator needs to have a passion to work within the community, and be committed, motivated and flexible.
Helensburgh & Lomond Carers SCIO say: “Volunteers play an important role in helping the Charity achieve its operational objectives and are highly valued by the organisation. The Management Committee encourages carers, former carers and those who simply wish to help the Charity, to apply to be registered as a volunteer and, if selected, will ensure they have access to the appropriate support and the opportunities to develop their interest and skills. “ Contact Sharon Richardson at Sharon@helensburgh-carersupport.org
The commitment is for a few hours a week and involves mainly assisting and coordinating volunteers with events, activities, fundraising and recruiting volunteers

matches. If we could capture some of that grit and apply it to our physical and mental well-being, think of the changes we could make.
How many times last year did you make a plan, only to find that you didn’t even make a start? Often for good reason in the busy lives we lead, things are put off for another day, as something else seems more urgent.
Most of us have challenges that we set ourselves, whether it’s running a marathon, stopping smoking, losing weight, gaining weight, stopping drinking, getting help with depression or simply getting time to unwind with friends. We can’t put our lives on pause, but we can start the year without making resolutions‌ instead taking immediate action. What will you do differently today?
As a doctor I believe that health is our first priority, and try to encourage people to take immediate action to improve their health, or wellness. It can be impressive to see people making positive changes as a result. Last year I was inspired by Andy Murray’s determination, his coach urging him that “the time is now! throughout his

SUPPORT deBt can Be the worst hangoVer GROUPS Post-Christmas debt is pushing people in the direction of payday loans. A YouGov survey predicted a spend of well over £800 per household during the Christmas period alone. Unfortunately, much of the spending is made with credit and debit cards, and even worse with extremely expensive payday loans which may lead some families into debt well into the new year. If you do nd you’ve overspent at Christmas, Citizens Advice have this advice: • Don’t panic and don’t bury your head in the sand. • Avoid borrowing further to try and pay off existing debt • Talk to your creditors don’t just stop payments without explaining why. They can sometimes be more understanding than you’d expect. • Sit down and work out how much you owe and how much you need to pay your priority debts, like mortgage, rent, gas, electricity bills and council tax. Don’t fall into the trap of paying whoever shouts loudestt first.
• Make sure you pay the priority debts rst every month and then work out how much you need for food, travel to work and other everyday expenses.

Glasgow-based Peckhams have been given the go-ahead by council planners. The chain’s proposals include function suites, six flats and outdoor seating areas at the B-listed former council offices on Sinclair Street, which were put on the market last year for £220,000 by Argyll and Bute Council. Peckhams commented:” We are looking forward to being part of the town and community and appreciated the approach and efficiency of the planning department.” The plans were approved by Argyll and Bute Council officials under delegated powers.

DE-CLUTTER: Having a clear out of unwanted clothes is a great way to start the year
The New Year is a great time to look around the house and have a really good clear out. If your bedroom looks anything like our picture it’s time to start. De-cluttering is not only a great way to tidy - it can be positively therapeutic. There are a surprising number of websites dedicated to the art. Obvious beneficiaries are our local charity shops. They support good causes and the recycling/ reuse of items which might otherwise go to landfill. With that in mind the charity

shops are suggesting that it might be a good idea to have a postChristmas clear out to help fund what is often life saving work. Volunteers have told us : “We’re sure lots of people are thinking it would be great to clear some space in their wardrobes especially if they’ve treated themselves to new season winter wear or plan to hit the New

“Taking time to de-clutter is a sure way to feel fabulous at the start of any season, especially if you know that you’re making a donation to a worthwhile cause. There is also the bonus that one person’s cast off is another person’s bargain buy.” The children will have had lots of new toys for Christmas and outgrown or grown tired of older ones. Toys and things like buggies are particularly welcome at the Life Charity shop on East King Street. Other shops welcome donations including furniture, men’s, women’s and children’s warm winter clothing, as well as accessories, including shoes, belts, handbags and jewellery, records and books. Charity shops in the town support among other things The Salvation Army, Shelter, Cancer Research, British Heart Foundation, DEBRA and Oxfam.

GOOD
COMPANY... At The Kitchen Depot, we have always prided ourselves in our family values, on always being prepared to do whatever it takes to ensure that our customers are treated exactly as we would like to be treated ourselves - with courtesy, consideration and professionalism.
But lest we ever become complacent, we actively encourage ongoing feedback - here's what Mr Lee Sanderson has to say:
"The most incredible thing about The Kitchen Depot has been your sky-high levels of customer service. Too often a company will promote customer service as a core value, only to reveal a hollow promise when they don't live up to it." Mr Sanderson continues: "My favourite retailer is John Lewis because I know that they will do whatever they can to put something right if it goes wrong. The Kitchen Depot has performed to the same high standard."
"To favourably compare a small family business to Britain's most respected retailer is not something that I do lightly but you are well worthy of the comparison." Well, thanks for that, Mr Sanderson - please excuse us while we blush with pride. When it comes to looking after our customers, The Kitchen Depot is never knowingly undersold.
