A part of this is to locate defibrillators in communities and then set up training, which will be free and is aimed at the public. Two defibrillators have been confirmed for Rhu; at the Marina and at Rosslea Hall Hotel.
A recent meeting of Rhu and Shandon Community Council was told that “Heartstart UK” is a British Heart Foundation initiative that teaches people what to do in a life-threatening emergency,
Other areas such as Shandon and the upper parts of Rhu are also being considered. It was agreed that the council should cooperate with this initiative by helping to set up the Training Days

Queen and Princesses. Past committee member Fiona Baker has unearthed some interesting history of the event. On the Rhu and Shandon Community Council’s very useful website she writes: “The history of Rhu, or Row as it was known earlier, records an annual Village Fair which the residents of the Parish held on grounds now known as the playpark. “In the early 20th century, the
highlight for the Village children was the Green maypole. From the 1920's to the outbreak of The second World War, the owners of large houses took it in turn to annually host a garden fete which included the usual fun and games, cake and candy and a Bonnie Baby competition. “During the War, through the initiative of Colonel Kenneth Barge, the village green became the venue for annual Galas for such activities as Pillow fights, Walk the Plank, Drop a Penny to cover a coin in a tub of water, Tug of War, Sack Race, Egg & Spoon Race, Three-Legged Race, the sale of fruit and vegetables donated from local gardens, guess the weight of a cake and how many sweets in a jar competitions. “It was with such fond memories that Provost Billy Petrie asked a local group about 20 years ago to reinstate a village Gala.”

Boom could end“plastic beach The Clyde Marine Mammal project, a not for profit organisation concerned with the marine stewardship of the area, has said that Loch Long and beaches around Arrochar are becoming an environmental disaster zone. Their website says: “This could be achieved by using relatively cheap, tried and tested fish-farm boom technology to help gather the marine debris and halt its flow as it is pushed northwards by prevailing winds and tides. It seems that every piece of litter that finds its way into the Clyde eventually works its way to the head of our sea lochs, causing longterm environmental issues and destroying what should be a beautiful area, crippling the local economy. “We don’t need to design an expensive or intricate array to remove the debris. Fiona Miller, the owner of The Toy Shop was delighted that so many turned out to
help celebrate. “It’s truly encouraging to know that the community is still behind you, even after 10 years. I’d love to say a big thank you to our customers and staff for their enduring support, we couldn’t do it without you we’ve had a ball!”

Poems suit many moods Local author Graham Hardie has published a new collection of poems. “The Medicated Soul” is his third collection to be published by Ettrick Forest Press and is a selection of his poetry from the last seven years. The book will be launched on June 23rd and is available at Helensburgh library and online at Amazon.co.uk. Carolyn Richardson, a former Director of The Scottish Writing Centre and an Open University Art Tutor said of the book “No one can write such mesmerising sonnets, blank verse and rambling epic urban rants. Poems that alternately spit, caress and kick the heart out of spirit.”
The Nocturnal. He has two previous collections of poetry published by Ettrick Forest Press. His work has been read at the Edinburgh Festival and he was accepted for the MLitt in Creative Writing at St Andrews University in 2003. Examples of his early work can be found at www.grahamhardie. co.uk
Graham Hardie lived in Helensburgh most of his youth, attending Hermitage Primary and The Glasgow Academy. He obtained an MA(Hons) degree from Glasgow University in Sociology and Social Policy in 1997. He has held various jobs including teaching English in Romania, a support worker for the disabled and a gardener. Currently he is the editor of the forthcoming literary journal

This month: Anaphylactic shock… Last month a restaurant owner in England was jailed over the death of someone who had been given a meal made with peanuts, despite having a known peanut allergy. The victim had suffered anaphylactic shock and died as a result. Anaphylaxis is the most severe form of allergic reaction. It affects all the body systems, causing swelling of the tissues affecting the eyes, throat, lungs, gut and skin. This results in breathing and circulatory problems which if untreated results in dangerously low oxygen levels and occasionally death. Allergies have become increasingly common in the past 20 years. Fortunately people are quicker to
recognise these and affected people can be supplied with “Epipens”. These are pen shaped devices which anyone can use to inject Adrenaline when pressed against the skin, Adrenaline being the very effective antidote to anaphylaxis if given early. People who have suspected severe allergies can be referred to the Anaphylaxis clinic to help identify the cause and prevent repeated episodes. Sometimes antihistamines or steroid tablets can be taken to reduce the chance of future reactions although careful avoidance of known triggers is the best way. If you are concerned this may be an issue for you, then speak to your GP as early as possible to get the best advice!

JUNE 2016 - Health & Wellbeing
Get ready for a great Summer by Nick Cowie Summer is finally here, home or away, it’s when we recharge our batteries so we’ve been looking at ways of getting the best out of an all too short season.
Prepare Y
ou should spend longer preparing for your holiday than actually lying on a beach. Shivering in your cossie in your back garden on a sunny but deceptively cold Scottish summer day isn’t much fun. So a fake tan it is - a professional one no homemade horrors. Then there’s clothes. Last year you were into blue, - this year of course blue won’t do, so check out the fashion pages for the colours that matter and flatter for you.

ou want to be on top form and get the best out of the summer. What you eat will give you a boost. That means fruit, fresh vegetables, particularly broccoli and other green vegetables, dried fruits too such as apricots, raisins and mango give a concentrated source of carbohydrate, making them a great energy booster. Bananas are the perfect fitness food and packed with nutrients - so is the peel. Try the whole banana in a smoothie.
K, this is the tough one. We all mean to but somehow life gets in the way. One easy way to start is simply walk quickly for 20 minutes - make it part of your journey to work, you’ll feel far better when you arrive. Or how about combining a swim with your morning shower. For a long term plan local gyms can tailor a fitness programme for you and you are more likely to succeed with the professional, experienced help that they can provide.
Local taster sessions in the Helensburgh area or hire a board to take away on holiday.
ou go away to wind down and destress. But that can start long before you go. Plan your holiday schedule for quality, not quantity. Adopting the theory that "less is more" can help you to enjoy your time with family and friends. Plan some time to yourself. Choose something you enjoy doing alone, such as reading, taking a bath, yoga, walking or listening to music, and do it for at least 15 minutes per day. Ultimate relaxation.
Inflatable boards will fit in the back of your car.

Legal Matters with Gill Bowman BA LLB This month:
Consuming Alcohol in Public
The recent spell of sunny weather has given us all high hopes for a great summer full of impromptu barbeques at the beach and picnics in the park. This idea generally goes hand in hand with an ice cold beer or a glass of something sparkling. Although this sounds extremely civilised, unfortunately, often people drinking alcohol in public areas can become anti-social and cause a nuisance to others. In order to tackle this problem and reduce alcohol related incidents of disorder, all local authorities in Scotland now have alcohol byelaws in place. There is no blanket

ban against drinking in Scotland. It is up to the council to decide where the byelaws are to be enforced and currently that is in around 480 towns and villages across the country. This is why you may hear of people being able to enjoy a few drinks in Edinburgh’s Princes Street Gardens but not Glasgow Green. If you have any doubt it would be best to check your council website. The penalty for consuming alcohol if you are in a public area can put more than a dampener on your afternoon of fun in the sun and could result in a fine of up to £500.

“The work on the Old Luss Road was undertaken with permission from the landowner, Luss Estates, and the tenant farmer to upgrade this part of the track. “Argyll and Bute Council also contributed by making available considerable quantities of planings from roadworks undertaken in the local area. The Access Trust is grateful for the help and assistance given by all concerned.”

Necessary repair work to nearby electricity pylons has also been unkind to this old route. As a result the old solid base of this route has been hidden under a covering of mud and vegetation
Anne Urquhart from the Helensburgh and District Access Trust said: “ We commissioned the work as part of our aim to maintain and upgrade local paths for recreational use by walkers,

Community Payback is essentially the replacement for Community Service, also more recently called Community Punishment. Courts are given the power to sentence offenders of certain crimes to undertake between 40 and 300 hours of Community Payback. This work is unpaid and demanding work that is aimed at giving something to local communities and forcing offenders to repay the community for the wrong they have done. Organisations can nominate a local project or vote for the project that they wish to see benefit from unpaid labour.

The Community Advertiser is...
Top award for La Barca
out our name we leapt into the air with excitement. To win it three years in a row is a massive achievement and a huge pat on the back for all the hardworking staff.
Milan added: "La Barca is busier than ever and just seems to go from strength to strength. We are so proud to bring the trophy to Helensburgh for the third time. I would like to say a big thank you to all our passionate, hard working staff and our loyal customers for giving La Barca its great buzz and voting for us. "I'd also like to thank KJ from The Wedding Planner in Helensburgh who made sure we all looked fantastic in kilts representing one of officially the best restaurants in Scotland." Customers voted for La Barca in Scotland's "Best Rest of the World" category to make the shortlist then they were visited by mystery judges. The industry experts marked them on everything from food and service to ambience. La Barca, on Helensburgh seafront, also won in 2014 and 2015 in their category which was previously titled Scotland's Best Mediterranean Restaurant.
"It's amazing that we've made it a hat trick for Helensburgh and beat competitors from Glasgow Perth and Largs.
The couple, of Kilcreggan, also own Cattle & Creel steakhouse and seafood bar and Riverbank Bar and restaurant in the town.

NEW Homes for Luss village make sure they are properly listed with Argyll & Bute housing and Link Housing. Sir Malcolm says the future of places like Luss must lie in developing economic opportunities alongside family housing, arguing these will lead to secure and properly-rewarded jobs – especially for the young. IDYLLIC: The beautiful village of Luss is soon to have five new affordable homes built that will house families
Some lucky families will soon be moving into five new affordable homes in a key site in Luss, thanks to a £150,000 grant from Luss Estates. The homes are aimed at helping to answer what’s seen as a need for affordable homes in the area, and to shift the balance away from what could otherwise be an ageing local population. Sir Malcolm Colquhoun, Luss Estates chairman said: “We have been in negotiation with Link Housing for some time and I am delighted that we are now able
to make this major commitment to the future of Luss. “I very much hope that these new houses will be made available to local families - our main aim is to ensure that they are able to stay in the area.” Local MSP Jackie Baillie said she was “thrilled” by the £150,000 gift, and urged local people to
His ambition is to see Luss become a vibrant and thriving community, based on working families relying on local jobs which could range from forestry to tourism. The housing cash bonus is part of a development plan, commissioned and funded by Luss Estates, which aims to provide a “road map” for increasing the number of families in Luss. There will be dialogue between developer Link Housing and the national park authority to ensure they blend in with the area’s existing architecture. Luss Estates will also provide further financial support, if required, to bridge the gap between available grant funding and the actual build costs of the new houses.
