INVITATION TO COMMENT ON WATERFRONT PLAN A drop in event to see and comment on plans for Helensburgh’s new leisure centre takes place on April 30 in the Victoria Halls Digital images of the centre are available on the council’s web site. They are part of the 12 week pre application consultation on Argyll and Bute Council’s £18 million redevelopment of the town’s waterfront. People will also be able to view detailed design proposals for the waterfront, and speak to the team behind the project at public events, taking place in April and May. In addition to the new swimming pool and leisure centre, the waterfront regeneration plan also features parking and public realm improvements and strengthened flood defences.
Initial reaction in on line forums has not been overwhelmingly positive with comments such as: “ It looks just like a supermarket,” to widespread disappointment that the facilities are similar to the present pool and have not incorporated fun features like a slide, wave machine or flume. Councillor Ellen Morton, chair of the authority’s Helensburgh and Lomond area committee, said: “The Helensburgh Waterfront Development project is all about creating a vibrant and attractive waterfront for the town that will benefit local people

At the end of the 12 week period the Council says it will assess everything that has been said to it against the following: Does what someone has suggested meet
Can the suggestion or suggestions be afforded within the budget that we have available? Can the suggested changes actually be built? Does the suggestion mean that it would cost us more to run the building, car park etc. or that we wouldn’t be able to bring in as much money from them? Does the suggestion consider what the people who will actually use the building, car park etc. want, as well as the local communities and visitors to the town?

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Local people, who must live or work in Helensburgh or Rhu, are needed to help launch and recover the lifeboat, as well as keeping everyone on the shore safe. People must be physically fit, a medical is required, to be able to attend the Rhu station in the event of a call-out, with a mode of transport to get there and have a proactive attitude with a willingness to learn new skills and be able to work as part of a team. An RNLI spokesman said:” Do you like the sound of training every week in the freezing cold and jumping in the Clyde on a Sunday morning? “Are your hands just too warm? Do you wish they were freezing cold out on a shout with Helensburgh Lifeboat? “If you can answer yes to all of these then volunteering with Helensburgh RNLI is for you. But

if the freezing cold and water aren’t really your thing, that’s ok, because we also require volunteers to join our shore crew to assist in the launching and recovering of the lifeboat and keeping everyone on the shore safe. Anyone interested should message the lifeboat station Facebook page or call at the station on a Sunday between 10am and 12 noon during training for a chat.

NEW USE FOR PARK’S “WINCHIN TREE natural homes for wildlife. Fiona Baker from the team tells us: “ We will be creating a number of different habitat spaces to attract different birds including a woodpecker hole and a bat cave for bats as well as places to encourage insects.
WINCHIN TREE: The tree is part of a new wildlife feature in the park
An exciting new wildlife feature has been created in Hermitage Park at the old ‘Winchin Tree’, which once had a seat all around it. It had to be partially felled due to disease in the upper branches last year. The project team saw an opportunity to retain the main trunk and create a ‘wildlife hotel’. The Hermitage Park project secured a ÂŁ5000 award from the Tesco 'Bags for Life’ scheme to create the feature. Special nesting hollows designed

“We will be monitoring wildlife with a number of hidden cameras located within the tree and hope to relay pictures of the nesting birds and bats into the pavilion. It is hoped the footage can also be streamed to local schools. An environmental audit of the park before the refurbishment started found that the biodiversity levels were in fact very low in the park and it is hoped features such as the wildlife hotel and new still water pond for amphibians will increase biodiversity and be excellent learning and discovery tools for visitors and schools. Hermitage Primary School’s Gardening Club joined in to learn all about it and will be part of a video we are making on how the wildlife tree was created.

SPINSTER’S ISLAND TALES Local author David Weir whose webcast radio series “Journal of an Island Spinster has built a loyal following, has now committed his island stories to print. Following upon three novels that travelled the more traditional paperback route, published through the Arts Council, David has now elected to go digital. “This will allow readers abroad, previously punished by high postage costs, to access the latest work at the same cost as those in the UK. He says. David is the wordsmith who, in tandem with some very talented cartoonists, brought you not only a couple of editions of “The Clyper but also the Independence extravaganza “Bravefart. “Journal of an Island Spinster is an irreverent tale, as told by the former school teacher Kathleen McIver. It is set on the dysfunctional island of Arsay
S S D D LS Two feature films, a new series for Netflix and UK TV hits The Loch and The Replacement were all filmed in Argyll and Bute last year.
which lies off the west coast of Scotland. David says: “Three hours away by ferry on a good day, three weeks under normal conditions, save for the introduction of social security, super-fast broadband and cannabis farming, nothing has changed since Neolithic times. “Fortified by the locally distilled dram, “The Arsayvhor, the islanders go about their business watched over by the Reverend Macleod, who is oblivious to the fact that his wife is the greatest sinner amongst them. Available on Amazon as an e-book.
Spending on screen productions across Argyll & Bute more than doubled. In 2017 Argyll and Bute Council received 115 inquiries about filming and there were 48 productions filmed during the year, with a local production spend estimated at £1,354,434 – more than double the estimate for 2016. The council has launched a standalone website (www. filminargyll.co.uk) to promote its work with the industry. The aim is to make Argyll and Bute a leading location for screen industry productions and film tourism.

Mrs Girling, Principal Teacher, who runs the Eco Committee, said: “The first part of our campaign was to boycott the use of single use plastic bottles and pupils were able to exchange their plastic bottles for reusable water bottles.

HERITAGE WALK CELEBRATES 75 YEARS

beautiful but overgrown garden.
The garden is open from April to September and the owners Sue and Mike Thornley will host a Heritage Garden Walk on Sunday 29 April at 2.30 pm, meeting at the gate.
Early year visitors will see tall Asiatic magnolias flower on bare branches creating dramatic effect, together with many large-leaved rhododendron species and hybrids developed at Glenarn.
Glenarn is a private garden, largely created and made famous for its collection of rhododendron species by the Gibson family. This garden was established in the 1920s and 30s, overlaid on the original Victorian layout, with some remaining trees and rhododendrons from the 19th century.
Glenarn first opened to the public under the Scotland’s Gardens scheme in 1939, and open days were held during World War Two, when visitors were advised to bring sugar for their tea because of rationing.

Last year they made £3,200 in total for the Scotland's Gardens charities and especially for Erskine which celebrates 100 years of caring for ex servicemen and women. The plant sale alone raised over £1,900.

PARK PREPARES TO WELCOME CAMPERS Late News
HAPPY CAMPING: A second season of bye laws come into effect to help control camping
Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park is preparing to welcome campers to its loch shores as the second season of camping management bye laws comes into effect. The bye laws were introduced in 2017 in order to protect some of the area’s most popular loch shores from environmental damage caused by the high volume of visitors and issues with antisocial behaviour from some campers going back a number of years. The bye laws create Camping Management Zones, covering less than 4% of the National Park, where, between March and September, campers need to
camp in a designated camping permit area or a campsite. The bye laws also cover irresponsible fire lighting, including cutting down trees and the removal of dead wood which is damaging to the environment and wildlife. In 2017, more than 16,000 people camped in the new permit areas and the newly created low-cost campsite at Loch Chon. Feedback gathered from people who camped was extremely
positive with 87% of those who responded saying they would recommend staying in a permit area to others. Gordon Watson, Chief Executive of Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park, said: “Camping is a great way to enjoy the National Park and we’re pleased with how things went last summer. The feedback we received through our online surveys and what the Rangers experienced from speaking to people face to face was overall very positive. “But we know that the camping byelaws are still relatively new so it’s important that we continue to make people aware of how they work and encourage them to plan ahead. “There will be some visible changes this year such as new pitch surfaces, better water facilities, and connectivity for online bookings at Loch Chon campsite. Work is also underway to build another new low cost campsite at Loch Achray in time for the peak summer season. see www.lochlomond-trossachs. org/camping

April 2018 – What's Up Doc?
CHARITY AIMS TO What's Up Doc? BUILD PONTOON with Dr Nick Dunn A newly formed charity is aiming to install a new pontoon and moorings on Loch Long. Run by volunteers, the Loch Long Jetty Association is raising funds to pay for a marine licence. Planning permission has already been given for a 50-metre pontoon with a 12-metre hammerhead, designed by Fusion Marine who installed a pontoon on Loch Fyne at Strachur two years ago. Two residents, Dawn and Norman Gourlay, have run two marathons, in Malta to help raise funds. A spokesperson for the association said the floating pontoon would be picturesque and environmentally friendly, allowing safe access to Loch Long in the Teighness section of

We are over the moon with our new bathroom! From start to finish the whole process was smooth, easy and professional. The showroom is filled with lovely products and great ideas – but no big sales pitch or pushy staff. The products and workmanship are top quality. We are delighted and would highly recommend the team.
A great experience having the Bathroom Company completely change our bathroom! All the team were great and such hard workers. Dougie and Bob the plumbers went out of their way to help with design when somethings we had chosen weren't quite right. No hesitation from Richard about changing items along the way. They went out of their way to finish including a small utility. Nothing was too much trouble. The tiling boys and plasterers were also great. Highly recommend. Thanks again
My bathroom went from yugh to wow in 3 days as promised. From getting advice and help on choosing what I wanted to getting it fitted was great. All the guys that carried out the work were very good, friendly and cleaned up after all the different stages of the work getting carried out. If needing a lovely new bathroom installed and getting a good job done I would recommend using The Bathroom Company Glasgow

SUPPORT SUBMARINE CENTRE OPEN BY EASTER? GROUPS Local News – April 2018
EASTER TIME TARGET: The new Submarine Centre is due to be open by Easter
The launch of Eric Thompson’s book “ On Her Majesty’s Secret Nuclear Service” which we reviewed recently was held last month in Helensburgh’s Scottish Submarine Centre. The Centre was not yet open to the public, but the audience was told that was about to change. Brian Keating, the centre’s chief executive said: “ We are due to open at Easter. The project has been underway for five years and the motive throughout has been, ‘lest we forget.’ The audience was seated
underneath the centrepiece of the museum, an X-51 class miniature submarine, donated by The Royal Navy Museum. As the submarine is extremely cramped inside, it only held a crew of four, it will not be possible for the public to get on board. However by using state of the art video technology visitors

will be able to “see inside” by use of projections of the interior onto the exterior of the hull. The walls of the museum will similarly be used to tell a constantly unfolding story of the war beneath the waves using several projectors. It is believed to be the first time this technique has been used. The museum has had the help of students from the two local high schools to develop databases of submariners who died while in service. The database is now over 5,300 records and volunteers are expanding the data fields and looking for as much information about these brave men as possible. Visitors will be able to access this information through an interactive memorial. Brian added: “The Centre will be a central place for educating young scots about what the submarine service is all about and I believe it will also develop over the years into a world class facility for cultural events.“ For update on the centre see www.facebook.com/ ScottishSubmarineCentre

Scientists have concluded that the chicken came first not the egg, because the protein which makes egg shells is only produced by hens.
G Scientists have the answer to why fingers shrivel up like an old prune when we soak in the bath. Tests confirmed that wrinkly fingers improve our grip on wet or submerged objects, working to channel away the water like the rain treads in car tyres.

This month: MEDIATION Mediation is a practical and effective method of resolving disputes without resorting to the raising of a court action. It allows participants to come together and discuss their respective views and reach their own solution, with the assistance of an independent and trained mediator. The process is entirely voluntary; and in fact will only really work if both parties approach it with an open mind. The information provided during mediation is confidential and the purpose of this is to encourage open discussions and allow for every possible solution to be aired. The confidentiality element remains even in the event the parties cannot ultimately

reach an agreement and do end up in court. Essentially, you are not able to found on discussions that took place during mediation in any future court action. It is important to be aware that the only exception to this is in relation to any factual financial details exchanged between the parties. Mediation is often used following separation and family disputes. However, it could assist in any number of situations, including neighbour or workplace disputes. If you think mediation may assist you in some way then it may be worthwhile discussing the process with you solicitor. Legal Aid can be made available to fund the process in certain circumstances.

In this 2nd article on things you can do in Australia as part of a ‘Bucket List’, how about swimming with the biggest fish in the sea, the Whale Shark! There are only a handful of places in the world where you can swim with Whale Sharks and Western Australia must be top of that list. They can grow to about 40 feet in length and only eat plankton, krill and fish eggs, so you won’t be on the menu! Spotter planes are used and swimmers are limited, to ensure the wellbeing of the whale shark, and safety is paramount! It’s also possible now to swim with Hump Back Whales, but more restrictions are in place!

ALL WELCOME: The club are welcoming new members to come and get involved
Lawn bowls is a sport played at Commonwealth Games level and Team Scotland have ranked very highly achieving gold medals in previous years. Now Colgrain Bowling Club are using this as a way to promote the sport and to encourage new members to get involved. Past President Scott Moorhouse said: “Scotland has high hopes of medal success in the Games in April and Colgrain is looking to build on this increased televised interest to get more people interested and involved in the sport of lawn bowls.
“This would be the ideal time for anyone interested to try our sport and experience our club facilities without the normal financial expense incurred.“ Saturday April 7 is Colgrain opening day and Scott adds that is is an ideal time for anyone who wants to try the game to join them from 1pm onwards, chat to members and enjoy a “try before you buy.”
The club has an interesting history. During the mid -1940s just after the war, certain members of the Hermitage Bowling Club were dissatisfied with the conditions laid down by the then Helensburgh Town Council limiting playing time and the lack of a clubhouse where they could meet in the closed season. They agreed to try and establish a new club with better facilities. To help finance its creation they ran a weekly football sweep under the name of Hermitage Building Fund, which became locally known as the "railway sweep" due to rail workers who organised it. Eventually a piece of ground at Monaebrook (now Colgrain) became available which they bought in 1948, Since then, the club members have done an enormous amount of work to add to and improve the facilities. www.colgrainbowlingclub.org or their new Facebook page.

Local Business – April 2018
Are YOU a
6 STAR
Worker?
B
ecause Share Scotland IS a 6 -star organisation, providing support to people with complex disabilities across Scotland, and we need YOU! In West Dunbartonshire we support 11 people in 7 different locations, and we employ around 60 people locally. As a significant employer, we believe we have responsibilities to ensure that we provide opportunities for local people first and foremost, keeping local income in the local community. The role of support worker with Share Scotland is an extremely rewarding one, where you are part of a dedicated team who work as hard to support each other as they do with the person they are employed to support. Those whom we support live with complex and sometimes profound learning and physical disabilities, but it is very much our belief that everyone is entitled to achieve their ambitions and desires where possible, and we go to extra lengths to make this happen. Given the current challenging financial and recruitment climate, to be awarded 6 stars shows the massive commitment our staff demonstrate daily. As an organization, we ensure that we listen to staff, family members, service users and other agencies, which has also led us to the very highest standards of working practices and new and innovative thinking. A long serving staff member recently said, “One of my most valued experiences has been to see the true personality of this man emerge and develop into the complex character he is now, and watch his individuality flourish.” We know that the people at the “coal face” are those who know the service users best, and how we can make things work better, so no matter a person’s position in the organization, we are always happy to listen to them and put ideas into practice. We also actively encourage staff to bring their hobbies and interests into the workplace, and
we have had staff who have introduced fishing, painting, football and crafts into service users lives, with great success. It is impossible to describe a “typical” work day at Share, as there is always something different happening, and that is one of the benefits, according to our staff. Some of the general tasks are as you would expect – supporting someone to get dressed, enjoy meals, personal hygiene and attend appointments – but there are many other activities you may not expect. People who are unable to walk often go skiing. People who are unable to communicate enjoy drama and dance performances, some undertake voluntary roles in the community and we also have 5 gold medal winning Special Olympians in one of our Edinburgh services! A Service User told us “The staff support me to go to college and to practice my cooking. They like my sausage rolls!!”
“I feel part of something special – it’s so much more than a salary” We are actively recruiting for staff in the West Dunbartonshire area at the moment, with both day and night shift roles available. You don’t necessarily need to have experience of working in this sector, although it wouald be great, but for the right person, we will provide all the training needed, a comprehensive induction programme and the opportunity to
shadow another support worker until you are confident in the role. We would love to hear from anyone who thinks this job could be for them, or if you know of someone who might be interested, and we look forward to welcoming you to the Share Scotland team. “Now he’s doing things young people should be doing – I feel I’ve got my son back who’s been missing” – quote from a parent.
As a Support Worker with Share Scotland, you will enjoy many benefits, including a starting salary of the Scottish National Living Wage, contributory pension scheme, generous holiday entitlement, and access to the highest level of funded training, but more importantly, you will be part of an organization who values it’s staff just as much as those we support. A parent recently said – “As a father, we never felt we were losing our daughter to a support organization, more we gained an extended family who have looked after us as much as our daughter. If you are looking for a career where you will gain as much as you give, then Share Scotland is the place for you.” Investors in People, who rated us as a Silver Employer, described our staff as “the reason that Share Scotland is such a special place to work” and during a recent Care Inspection, where we retained our 6-star status, we were described as “sector leading”.

The Helensburgh & Lomond Highland Games are urging local businesses to get more involved and invest in what is now becoming a very desirable selling opportunity.
Association (SHGA), run three championships, the British 90m track, the new Scottish 200m track and the Scottish 22lb Shot Putt. Chairman Sephton MacQuire said: “ There were 45 stalls last year of which very few were locally based, the majority came from Inverness, Edinburgh or Glasgow areas.
“The Highland Games committee would also like to see more local businesses sponsoring the various sports events of which credit will be given to them in website, media and other announcements.”
Highland Dancing and pipe bands complete the mix. If you wish to become involved please contact: SephtonMacQuire HLG Chairman on 07739049176 . For stalls contact Ian on ijmacqHLG@ gmail.com or 07756242256
