We understand the concerns of local people on the challenges of staffing the Vale of Leven GP Out of Hours service and are working hard to sustain this service. "On the occasions when there are not enough GPs to cover all our eight centres, we move available GPs from site to site to ensure we provide the best service we can for patients.”
CONCERN: A large turnout attended a recent meeting to express their concerns
A meeting organised in the wake of proposed cuts to the GP out-of-hours service at the Vale of Leven hospital was packed with concerned residents. They fi lled Helensburgh Parish Church. NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is proposing to close the service at the Vale on weekday evenings, forcing local patients to travel to Paisley for emergency GP appointments.

Helensburgh's MSP, Jackie Baillie, worked with the Hospitalwatch campaign group to organise the meeting, giving local residents a chance to speak out in public against the proposed cuts.
One resident who posted a picture of the packed meeting commented on Facebook: "I was one of the hundreds at the meeting about the Vale. I moved to Helensburgh when we had the Victoria Infirmary where minor injuries could be treated by the 24 hour nursing staff. An article in the Community Advertiser last year inspired reader Aileen Dorrian to volunteer as a Visiting Friend which she tells us is fun and worthwhile. Visiting Friends is co-ordinated by Jayne Burnett at Argyll and Bute TSI. Aileen went along to the TSI office in Colquhoun Square after reading the article and met Jayne. Jayne explained that the idea behind visiting friends is to give older people in the community,
who may be feeling lonely or isolated, the opportunity to have someone who might pop in for a cuppa and a chat, or out for a bit of shopping, a walk or maybe even lunch. Aileen says “The initial chat with Jayne was informal and
“I enjoy Mary’s company and she appears to enjoy mine and I am really glad that I read that article in November and decided to act on it. If you have a free hour or so each week please think about becoming a Visiting Friend.” http://www.argylltsi.org.uk/

Helensburgh & Gareloch Horticultural Society are holding their 167th flower show on Saturday 26th August this year at the Victoria Halls. This society is one of the oldest societies in Scotland and was formed around 1850 for the local gardeners from the large gardens in Helensburgh to show their produce to the general public, and has been holding shows every year with only short breaks during the two world wars. The society promotes horticultural interests in the local area and encourages young children by holding bulb competitions between all the local primary schools. During the winter the society holds monthly meetings with guest speakers giving talks on a wide variety of horticultural topics.

Argyll and Bute Council’s Youth Services is on the lookout for volunteers to help with the Duke of Edinburgh’s (DofE) award scheme. Stuart Pittendreigh from the Society committee tells us: “ This popular event not only exhibits plants, flowers and vegetables, but also handicrafts and baking. This year the Helensburgh Flower Club is celebrating their 60th anniversary and are putting on a floral art display at the show. “There is something at the show for everyone, so go along and see what can be achieved in your garden. If you want to become a member, then download the application form from our website www. helensburghhorti.com, or join on the day.”
ANDREA ALLAN STEELE Teacher of Pianoforte and Theory
The DofE is open to anyone aged between 14 and 24, and helps to prepare young people with the skills necessary for life and work. There are currently more than 300,000 young people taking part in DofE award programmes in British schools, youth clubs, universities and young offender institutions, with another 600,000 abroad. The charity estimates that participants and scheme leaders give the equivalent of £41 million in free labour to good causes every year. For more information contact the Council’s DofE offi cer brian. smith@argyll-bute.gov.uk or 01631 567833.

The Helensburgh Art Club is always willing to showcase artwork by local young people and the theme undertaken this year by Primary 7 of Cardross Primary School is entitled 'moving on'. It will feature at their annual show and the title refers to the transition between primary and secondary schools ie. 'big fi sh in a little pond' to 'little fish in a big pond' and transition from caterpillar to chrysalis to butterfl y. Margaret Cameron the Club’s press officer said: “Grateful thanks are due to club members Mary Duncan and Margery Osborne for their considerable assistance to the pupils with their
artwork and the preparation of this display. This year the official opening of the exhibition will be undertaken by Elspeth Davis, head teacher at Cardross Primary School.” The annual exhibition will take place from Saturday 5th to Saturday 12th August at the Victoria Halls, Sinclair Street, Helensburgh and is a signifi cant event in the summer scene in Scotland. Once again, members have produced a wide range of artwork with paintings in oils, watercolours and acrylic mediums as well as jewellery and craft work. It does demonstrate a wealth of local talent and the club regularly attracts new members who introduce new techniques and styles, which brings fresh ideas to the exhibition. HAC membership is open to both professional and amateur artists and not everyone chooses to exhibit. There are regular activities during the winter months (October to March) when the art club holds lectures, demonstrations and workshops at Helensburgh Sailing Club. DESIGN A LIGHT: The Community Advertiser will once again be sponsoring the competition
The Summer Festival takes place this month starting on August 12 - but in among all the stalls and attractions you’ll ďŹ nd a winter reminder. One of the stalls will offer the chance to design and have made a new Christmas light feature for Colquhoun Square. Once again the Community Advertiser is sponsoring the competition which is open to Primary School pupils in Helensburgh and Lomond. These are the basics: • Do you have an idea of a Christmas light that would sparkle
If you can design this year’s winning selection, you will then be the lucky person to switch on the town’s Christmas lights on Friday 24th November and your winning design will be the centre of attention on the big night. You will travel with Santa and then press the magic switch to show the town is really ready for Christmas. The competition will run in August this year, closing on Friday 18th and is open to any youngster who will be at primary school in the Helensburgh and Lomond area next year.
Entry forms are available from the Community Advertiser office in James Street now, and can also be in Colquhoun Square this year collected at the Summer Festival and for many years to come? in the square on the 12th August. • Can you draw a simple drawing? Effi e Walker has been awarded the British Empire Medal for her long service to the school community. The 81-year-old retired only last October after 43 years at Colgrain. Recently she joined children and teachers at the school to share the good news. She said: “I loved working here and I love the children. DON’T IGNORE WARNING SIGNS!
Most people know that chest pain can be a warning sign for heart attacks. However there are many people out there who still delay acting upon it when it happens to them. Classical signs of a heart attack include central crushing chest pain, sometimes going to the left arm, with associated sweating, nausea and dizziness. When this happens it is obvious that something is very seriously wrong and they usually end up in the right place – hospital. However it can commonly be the case that symptoms can be mild, and people ignore the pains, putting it down to indigestion or muscle aches.
There is usually a nagging doubt that there may be a heart problem which leads people to look for advice further down the line. Unfortunately, the delay involved can result in more serious heart damage and can even be life threatening. Don’t make that mistake, or allow others around you to do the same. If you have worrying chest pains call your doctor immediately, or dial 111 for advice. If necessary call 999. Ambulance crews are trained to take a heart tracing and if necessary deliver you straight to the Golden Jubilee Hospital for early treatment!

Awards for young volunteers people over the past 12 months. Most of these hours were donated by young volunteers who help with the planning and running of drop-in sessions and community events in Centre 81 where the youth project is based.
Garelochhead Youth project Route 81 recently celebrated its annual awards night accrediting 71 local young people with Saltire Volunteering Awards. Route 81 provides a safe space and positive diversionary activities for local young people living within the catchment area of Hermitage Academy, aged from 11 to 18. The awards ceremony last month pictured on the Lochside Press website celebrated the project’s work and achievements. As well as celebrating volunteering achievements, the ceremony showcased the talents of Andrew Aitken, who opened the evening with his outstanding

Moving testimonials describing their Route 81 journey from Dillon, Emily, Bobbie Fotheringham and Iona Shanks ensured that the audience of young people, directors, partner agencies and friends of Route 81 understood the project’s work. Over the past year 72 evening drop-ins have taken place, attracting 30-60 young people per session, a five-day Easter programme for 25 young people, a four-week summer programme for 32 young people and a weekly football project attracting more than 20 people per session. A new pilot project, Club 16+ began in June for young adults aged 16 and over, offering 20 sessions of in-house and out of house events on a Saturday evening and attracted 35 young adults. Youth work manager Michelle MacDonald adds: “Route 81 has engaged with over 170 young people in the past 12 months and whilst the youth programme has been jam-packed, one of the most important services it offers has been informal one to one support.”

Anybody with a toddler likely has had to remove artwork from the walls. Try making a paste with baking soda and warm water, and then gently scrubbing with a non-abrasive sponge. This should remove crayon without damaging paint.

Legal Matters with Gill Bowman BA LLB
This month: CRIMINAL INJURIES COMPENSATION The Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme is provided by the government to financially compensate innocent victims of violent crimes. The Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority, referred to as CICA, are the body who process the claims and make decisions regarding any award to be made. The regulations of the Scheme and the value of the payments awarded are set by Parliament and are calculated with use of a set tariff system. Although it is recognized that a financial payment will not fully compensate someone for their suffering or loss, the scheme is in place to recognise suffering of blameless victims.
The size of the award varies to refl ect the seriousness of the injury, whether physical, sexual or mental, and also take into account any financial losses you may have had. This could be loss of earnings or where you have incurred expenses such as requiring specialist equipment to assist your recovery. It should be noted that not all applicants will qualify and there is a discount system applied in circumstances where the applicant has a criminal record. Your solicitor will be able to talk you through the regulations and assist with making a claim on your behalf.

GOOD
COMPANY... At The Kitchen Depot, we have always prided ourselves in our family values, on always being prepared to do whatever it takes to ensure that our customers are treated exactly as we would like to be treated ourselves - with courtesy, consideration and professionalism.
But lest we ever become complacent, we actively encourage ongoing feedback - here's what Mr Lee Sanderson has to say:
"The most incredible thing about The Kitchen Depot has been your sky-high levels of customer service. Too often a company will promote customer service as a core value, only to reveal a hollow promise when they don't live up to it." Mr Sanderson continues: "My favourite retailer is John Lewis because I know that they will do whatever they can to put something right if it goes wrong. The Kitchen Depot has performed to the same high standard."
"To favourably compare a small family business to Britain's most respected retailer is not something that I do lightly but you are well worthy of the comparison." Well, thanks for that, Mr Sanderson - please excuse us while we blush with pride. When it comes to looking after our customers, The Kitchen Depot is never knowingly undersold.
